5 Writing Rules I Like to Break

                Listen, I am firmly of the belief that writing doesn’t have rules. There’s no one way to do it—no one schedule or technique or tip that’s going to work for everyone and produce perfect narratives. Which is a good thing! I think if we all had to write exactly the same way, our stories would end up looking very similar.

                So while in general I tend to say throw out any and all rules (and yes, even including the advice I give on this blog if you so desire), here’s 5 common writing rules I specifically and intentionally break, and why:

1. Write what you know

I already talked all about how I tend to ignore this advice here if you’re interested. The TLDR version of it is that you can absolutely write things beyond your scope of knowledge (in fact, I’d guess that’s where the majority of fiction comes from) as long as you write it genuinely—this rule should be instead ‘write what you feel’.

2. Don’t edit as you write

Booo!! Okay maybe it works for some of you—if so, by all means continue (this applies to all the rules I’m about to mention, so just keep that in mind). Editing as I go is how I get back into the swing of things in a new writing session, and also allows me to try a scene a few different times to get the most I can out of it. I tend to believe that words are words even if they’re edited, rewritten, or even deleted.

If your goal is to finish your project as fast as possible, I imagine going back to edit before you’re finished your draft might slow you down. However, I also imagine editing as you go might save you an entire draft. Whatever works for you here is what you should do, but I personally love to edit as I write.

3. Avoid ‘said’

At least I think a lot of you guys are with me when I say that ‘said’ is sometimes just the best word to use. Using lots of descriptive words like, ‘yelled’, ‘begged’, ‘exclaimed’ can be distracting. When the dialogue speaks for itself, the ‘said’ disappears into the background of the scene, while necessary for grammar, it’s a formality for the actual storytelling. As well, I like to experiment with said by adding a descriptor afterwards. ‘Said quietly’ ‘said through a laugh’ ‘said without taking a breath’ etc.

4. Avoid adverbs

Here’s what I’ll say about word usage in general, as long as you pick your words with thought and care, you may use whatever words you want. Words have different specific connotations, and not always will avoiding the adverb have the same impact. For example, changing “he laughed lightly” to “he giggled.” We may have removed the adverb ‘lightly’, but ‘giggled’ holds a completely different connotation. It evokes a sort of immaturity, not unlike the ‘schoolgirl’ stereotype. If we don’t want that connotation, in this case, laughed lightly may be better.

                So don’t count out adverbs for the sake of it. As long as you’re choosing your words with intention and you understand the meaning behind them, you can experiment with a world of adverbs!

5. Never use passive voice

This one I didn’t realize was important to break until quite recently. We tend to be taught that passive voice automatically equals bad and I’m here to tell you that isn’t true. Passive voice should equal focus on action. Active voice equals focus on character. There may be certain sentences in which focusing on either the character or the action is more beneficial.

For example, “the alarm was pulled by Alice” (passive) kind of sounds clunky and wrong, whereas “Alice pulled the alarm” (active) is much more effective.

BUT “Alice was dragged out of the way” (passive) focuses on the action of Alice being dragged, rather than “Something dragged Alice out of the way” (active) focuses on the something that is doing the dragging, which in a moment of action, may take away from the pacing.

As long as you choose your voice with intention, both passive and active voice can be used to create strong, effective sentences.

Writing your debut novel is a labor of love, but promoting it can be an entirely different beast. However, in the age of social media, particularly platforms like TikTok, connecting with your potential readers has never been easier. The key? Knowing your audience. here are some tipps.

Why knowing your reader is essential

1. Targeted Marketing: Understanding your reader's preferences, interests, and demographics allows you to create marketing content that resonates with them specifically. This targeted approach is more likely to yield results.

2. Engaging Content: When you know your reader, you can tailor your content to their tastes. This means sharing excerpts, behind-the-scenes insights, or personal stories that genuinely interest them.

3. Building a Community: By knowing your reader, you can create a community of like-minded individuals who share a passion for your genre or subject matter. This community can be invaluable in promoting your book.

How to get to know your reader

Research: Start by researching the readership of books similar to yours. What do they like about those books? What are their common interests and age groups? This research can provide valuable insights.

Social Media Analytics: Use the analytics tools on platforms like TikTok or other social media sites. This data can help you understand the demographics and interests of your followers.

Engage with Your Audience: Respond to comments, engage in discussions, and ask your followers about their preferences. This two-way interaction can reveal a lot about your readers.

Conduct Surveys: Consider creating surveys or polls to directly ask your audience about their reading habits and preferences. This can be a goldmine of information.

Track Performance: Monitor the performance of different types of content. What gets the most engagement? What resonates with your audience? Use this feedback to fine-tune your strategy.

What are we allowed and not allowed to request on here?

okay, i'm assuming this ask is related to my tmnt writing since that's my focus at the moment, but generally what i'm saying will apply to any fandom i write for. if you're unsure about a fandom or you're absolutely dying for my take on a specific character from a fandom for some unknown reason, then just message/ask and i'll let you know because i do not have enough space or time to list every single fandom i have ever been interested in and will write for. from my blog you can see i have writings for tmnt, asoiaf/got/hotd, and peaky blinders, but i'm focusing on tmnt for the foreseeable future!

so, in terms of tmnt, i feel like the limits are pretty generic (i.e. no non-con, tcest, underage nsfw, turtles abusing reader etc.) kink wise for nsfw pieces, i'm pretty open - although personally, i just cannot write anything involving scat, urine etc. you can request reader x multiple turtles, but i have no idea how well-written that would end up, especially if it's more than two so that's your choice.

i'm currently writing for 1987, 2003, 2007, 2012, bayverse, and rise (all 18+) as well as just a generic tmnt universe without specification. i write pretty much all formats; longer imagines/oneshots, dribbles, headcanons etc. and i'll write nsfw, fluff, angst etc. too. there's no genre or format limitations that i can think of!

edit: i should add that i have seen and love batman vs. tmnt so i suppose we can add that to the list of universes I'd be willing to write for!

if you somehow didn't notice, i write a LOT for katsuki bakugou lololol but i'm not against writing for other characters ! but since i don't know if i'll write them as good as my stinky stinky ugly boyfriend, i reccomend you just stick with katsuki when you send me requests !

most of the stuff i write for katsuki is childhood friends to lovers ! it's one of my favorite tropes and katsuki is my favorite character, so the potential of mixing those two is simply too cute to pass up ! we here on my blog enjoy this i lot (i hope yall do at least </3) so if you don't wanna see this repetitiveness, or if you simply don't like this trope, this may not be the blog for you </3

speaking of this, i will not write anything i do not believe a certain character would do. let's say for example you send me a request where a character abuses or cheats on you or wtv. i would rather avoid writing for stuff like this. mostly because i'm not that good of a writer and it's not something i am able to write, but also because if i do not believe a certain character would do this in canon, especially if it's a character that's really dear to me, i will not feel comfortable writing it. i'm sure you can find someone who can write those type of asks for you ! but i am simply not that person <3

i strictly write for fem readers as i am female and feel the most comfortable writing fem reader, but i occasionally do not mention any gender in my fics. this is usually specified !

i stick to writing for katsuki bakugou, as i feel i understand and characterize him the best, but as mentioned before i have no problem writing for others should you ask me to ! said characters include : shoto todoroki, izuku midoriya, eijirou kirishima, denki kaminari, touya todoroki /dabi (wish me luck for that guy lol) it's always fun to experiment with writing for me , but please don't be upset if i don't characterize them how you want or i'll cry :(( (not really) (..unless?)

i don't write gore. canon typical violence is fine, but i'm not that good at being descriptive and also it's not really my cup of tea !

WRITING RULES

ONE. I write for a variety of fandoms. I mainly write n.sfw & dc, and rarely sfw; if your suggestions interest me I'll take it without further thought. You can refer to this post if you have any doubts regarding thirsts & suggestions vs requests. you can send thirsts/suggestions for drabbles, scenarios and headcanons (0.5k -1k) and headcanons ( 4 characters ).

TWO. ⁰¹do not send me n.sfw suggestions if you're a minor or ⁰²don't have an age indicator in your blog or ⁰³it's stated: “closed”. I'll decline it, even if its piques my interest.

THREE. I'll not write sequels of any fics but that doesn't mean you can't send your thoughts, you definitely can send your after thoughts. I might write about it, maybe a drabble but generally I don't think I'm built for part twos.

FOUR. I'll write fandom!versions of a headcanon post that I HAVE previously done for another fandom. Suggestions of characters for headcanons for “part two”/ different fandom!version is welcomed. All characters I write are adults, that is, twenty years of age and above. expansion of fandoms can be found at the end of this post.

FIVE. I use third person pov/second person pov with she/her pronouns ( preferably f!sub!reader ) Some of my works are in the second person with afab!reader/fem!dom!reader. Each posts have proper content warnings so read carefully before proceeding. since my default is f!reader, I'll stick to that if you don't specify it.

I do not take requests anymore unless it is for an event I make but I do take suggestions.THIRSTS ARE ALWAYS ENTERTAINED.

Since I'm a multifandom blog i do not have much hard no's for characters. so, if you have doubts shoot an ask if I'll be willing to write on them or not. that being said. I DO WRITE SAPPHIC CONTENT, THAT IS, FEMALE CHARACTERS ( with fem!reader / afab!reader ) ARE ACCEPTABLE TOO.

Some thoughts about writing, tropes, and writing “rules”:

There are a lot of “do’s” and “don’t’s” and “avoid these tropes” for various genres, and while, sure, it might be best practice to avoid certain sayings or plot points that are overdone, I don’t think it’s really the “overdone” part that’s the issue. In most of these tropes, the initial appeal was some deeper meaning the author was conveying, and I think that’s been somewhat lost over time.

The appeal of LOTR and Sauron wasn’t just “creepy dark lord conquering the world.” The evil of Sauron and the ring was so insidious, because it played on the evil that exists inside of every person, and reflected on the exhausting bravery it takes to do good in a world that feels so much bigger than you. It became a trope, bc future writers and publishers mistook that magic for a product of the surface level plot point.

Pride and Prejudice and Emma made Enemies to Lovers and Friends to Lovers popular, respectively, not just bc of the dynamics themselves, but bc they highlighted human weaknesses, and showed how relationships can better each person involved.

So I think the question is less “what or what not to write,” and more “why are you writing it.” Write what you want, just make sure it’s what your story and characters need.

Hi there! So, I decided to open up writing requests, as I've wanted to get back into the habit of writing recently. I've been writing fanfics since I was in middle school (💀), and I actually plan on posting some fanfics to AO3 at some point, so be on the lookout for those if anyone's interested. Anyway, back to the post!
