Rock and a hard place tfp ratchet?
RAHHH THIS ONE MADE ME INSANE. This takes place in the "What Sun Still Rises" universe, where Sideswipe and Sunstreaker come to Earth in the TFP universe as kids. CW for food shortage/food deprivation
It’s nothing he hasn’t been through before. That’s what he tells himself as the days drag on into weeks, as that quarter-cube decrease in rations starts to really get to him. It’s nothing he hasn’t been through before, and the team needs this.
Things have been different since the twins arrived, in more ways than one. Ratchet wouldn’t trade them for the world, certainly wouldn’t turn them out on their own, but in all honesty, they hardly had the energon to sustain themselves before Sideswipe and Sunstreaker’s arrival. They don’t have the resources to feed two more mouths, let alone two more growing ones.
He knows they’ve been subjected to energon deprivation before. It shows in their frame size, in their labwork, in the thin spots in their armor. He refuses to let them feel that pain, not when they’re so young. Not when they’re just now learning to be bitlets. They’d accept it, he knows. If he explained the situation to them, Pit, even if he didn’t, they’d accept it. He just… he can’t. So he shorts himself, and he keeps shorting himself even when their next raid comes up wonderfully successful. It’s just half a cube a day saved, but it’s something. It’s more than what they would have otherwise, and it’s not as if he needs it as much as the rest of the team does. He’s not a child and he’s not a fighter. He’ll be fine.
It’s a quiet afternoon, the kind he’s come to appreciate since settling into the Bunker. Optimus and the rest of them are out on a scouting mission, and the twins and the humans are playing video games in the common room. Ratchet is in his lab working on the synthetic energon formula. He’s sat at a table, and everything is fine. He’s tired and achy and his helm hurts like the Pit, but he’s fine. All that is normal. He needs something from a bench on the other side of the room, he realizes, and pushes himself to his feet with a groan.
Immediately, he knows he’s made a mistake. His vision narrows to a dim pinprick of light and all his energon seems to drain from his head. He stumbles, tries to catch himself on the desk, then—
—the ground, blinking, trying to—
—hand to his helm, hurts—
—little hands patting his face, weight on his chest. “M’whazzat?” He cycles his optics a few times, and Sideswipe comes into focus alarmingly close to his face. “What…?”
“Ratchet!” Sideswipe’s perched on Ratchet’s chest, leaning over his face. Sunstreaker can’t be far, Ratchet figures, and he’s proved right when he pipes up from somewhere on Ratchet’s left. “Are you okay?”
“We heard a crash and we came in and—”
“---You were on the ground.”
“Did you fall?”
“Should we call Optimus?”
“We should call Optimus.”
Ratchet shoos Sideswipe off his chest and sits up with a groan. “No one is calling Optimus. I’m fine. Just got a bit dizzy, is all.”
Two sets of bright blue optics fix on him with intensity and, he realizes, no small amount of fear. Their plating is slicked down flat and their fields are going wild.
“Are you sure?” Sideswipe asks, tucking himself close to Ratchet’s side.
Sunstreaker presses up against his other side. They both sit against him for a few moments, vents working overtime and fields reaching out to Ratchet for stability, before Sunstreaker says it. “Is it because you’re low on fuel?”
Ratchet sighs, pulls both of them closer. “Now, why would you say a thing like that?”
Sunstreaker pouts. “We know you don’t fuel as much as everyone else. It’s not a secret.”
Well, frag.
Sideswipe speaks next. “And we know it’s because of us.”
Frag it all. “You two are too smart for your own good, you know that?” Both of them laugh, but it’s strained. “Listen. You’re right, I have been shorting myself, but it’s not your fault. That sort of thing is never your fault.”
“But it’s because of us.”
“You don’t have enough fuel to feed us.”
“That’s for me and the other adults to worry about, you understand? You two are bitlets; your health comes first.”
Sideswipe makes an indignant little noise. “But—”
“But nothing.” Ratchet gives both of them another squeeze. “I’m sorry I scared you, but I’m alright. All you two need to worry about right now is being bitlets, okay?”
“And the Decepticons,” Sideswipe says.
Ratchet stifles a laugh. “And the Decepticons.”

Less than a month ago "What Sun Still Rises" was born from this exact message. It now haunts my dreams. There is a timeline taped to my wall.

Free Advice Friday: Cut to the Chase
Tumblr media
You’ve put together that great demo of your work, and you’re ready to share it. But if it’s longer than 3 minutes, and doesn’t include your best material, you’re wasting my time.
I couldn’t tell you how many demos I’ve watched and listened to over the years. I’ve had numerous college students, broadcast school students, and minor league announcers share their demos in the hopes that if I’m not hiring them then someone in the major leagues will. I would have to estimate that of the hundreds of demos I’ve watched or heard, only maybe 10% of them follow a very simple rule-- Keep it short, and put your best stuff up first.
One thing you have to realize from the employer’s perspective is that any time a position opens, especially in the high minor or major league level, the position receives at a minimum 200 applications. Sometimes it ends up being closer to 300 applicants, depending on the position and the team or league it’s associated with. Whenever I would get that many applicants for a job, I would whittle down the general population by glancing through the profiles and resumes of the people who sent in something. Let’s say there’s 300 applicants... once you get through the people who are overqualified, under-qualified, or still strangely think a bathroom mirror selfie makes a good profile picture, you’re left with about 30 qualified candidates.
Now that may sound like a small amount, but if I’m watching 2 minutes of demo with every applicant, I’m suddenly spending an hour going through the demos. I need to pare down that 30 or so applicants to 10-12 I want to dive deep in to for phone interviews. That means I want to move through the demos rather efficiently, so if you’re sending a long and rambling demo that doesn’t feature your best work first, it’s a waste of my time and yours.
Now you may think this is unfair or a strange way to do things, but I’ve been in the room in many situations with other people in management positions following a similar path. Back in the winter of 2000-01, I was an interim production director at WSSR-FM in Tampa, and it ended up I was assisting our program director in sorting through the hundreds of submissions for our new morning show. As we went through tape after tape and CD after CD, if the demo didn’t get our attention we threw them in to the discard box. If they got our attention because they were awful, we turned them in to promos about how awful some of our submissions were. But that’s another story for another time...
The point is, you have maybe 10-15 seconds to grab the employer’s attention in a good way, and make him or her feel bad about contemplating skipping forward to the next applicant. Here are some tips on how not to waste your efforts, or the time of the person who may give you that next break:
Put your best stuff first: I can’t stress this enough, which is why it’s about the 5th or 6th time I’ve mentioned this. Your best call of the big goal, the game-winning hit, the thrilling final 10 seconds of that championship game. Whatever that call is, put it front and center so I know what it’s going to sound like when my team is making that big play that will go down in the annals of sports history.
For video demos, don’t start with an establishing shot: Some people don’t mind this-- a scene-setter shot from a studio or before the game. But for me, again it goes to putting the best call first. Wow me with your best work, not when you’re cool and calm with your pregame show open that was recorded two hours before the game. Besides, I already know your name and what you look like through your social media posts. I don’t need that studio shot before the game, just cut to the chase. Save those studio shots and pregame banter for later in the demo, or leave it out entirely if that’s not the prime role you have.
Your “best of” demo needs to be short: I recommend between 2-3 minutes of action for what you’re consistently sending out. But you need to have ready, and perhaps already on display on your personal website, full broadcasts (or lengthy stretches of a full broadcast such as a quarter of a football game or a period of a hockey game). Whet the appetite with your best work, have the whole production available on demand or by request.
Speaking of websites, prominently feature your demo: You may have a page on your site for your demo work, but make sure your best demo is front and center on the main page. Remember about how much time an employer has to go through the dozens of qualified candidates-- you need to make it as simple as possible to see or hear your work, even if it is a little redundant.
Everyone’s demo needs are different, but these tips will help you get pointed in the right direction in getting the attention of the hiring party. For more detailed and personalized tips, visit SammonSez.com to see how we can help you stand out from the crowd.
