I love Xie Bian so much.
He is a genuinely good and kind person, that self-sacrifices a lot. and a well-layered and complex character.
Xie Bian has his own moral code, one that guides his thoughts and actions in his two lifetimes. Thus, markedly in Zong Ziheng's life, his innermost struggle is between doing what he feels that is right, what he wants to do, and upholding filial piety. This is especially hard for him, especially as he realizes his parents are flawed people, capable even of doing evil things if it means they get to achieve their goals. Things that go against Zong Ziheng/Xie Bian's moral code, against his conduct.
Still in Zong Ziheng's life, he was the eldest prince of the decaying Zong Clan. He also had talent, and his mother expected a lot from him. He had to be a role model, set the example for his younger siblings. He had to work for the power and prestige of the Zong Clan. In truth, all he wanted was a carefree life, traveling and helping the small folk in need. However, until the end, he upheld filial piety, even if everything around him fell apart.
His relationship with Zong Zixiao/Fan Wushe is a rollercoaster of emotions. Both went through a lot together and apart, which shaped their deep and complex entanglement. Misunderstanding, miscommunication, betrayal, lust, reconciliation... all these circumstances and emotions, and many more, built their relationship.
Being the target of greedy people, because of his golden core, Zong Ziheng/Xie Bian faced a lot of betrayal and hurt.
Yet, at the end of the day, Zong Ziheng/Xie Bian remained true to his essence. A good, kind and compassionate person at heart. He does grow with the circumstances though, and learns.

Wu Chang Jie Thoughts...
I've finally finished reading this massive series!
Just finished reading this massive series, and WOAH I have a lot of thoughts. Imagine you are in a Disneyland Ride. You're in the dark, you go in, fasten your seatbelt-- expecting to have a roller coaster ride. The ride begins to move forward, no ups or downs yet--then, it drops down. And down. And down. When you expect it to finally climb upwards, it drops you down again and again and you begin to wonder if you went to the wrong building and sat through a ride that only drops. Makes you wonder when you'll finally stop taking all that beating. This is that story. I have high respect for the author who is able to evoke that sort of feeling while reading the story. Countless times I've gritted my teeth in anger and want to step into the world and grab Xie Bi An so he can have the peaceful life he wants. I cannot stress enough how good this author is in making you feel just as beaten and battered as the main character. The first half definitely had the most impression on me in the story. The mystery, the hopelessness, the despair-- everything in it had been done well IMO. I agree with other people's assessment that if I was to rate the first half of the story, it'll probably be 4.5 or 5/5. The second half still kept me interested in what was going on, but it's not as interesting as the first half. I'll be more specific down below. If you don't want any spoilers, I suggest you stop reading here. !!SPOILERS AHEAD!!
First Half I loved the palace politics in the flashback. Everything was laid out nicely, and I love the contrast between how the Eldest Prince (ZZH) and the Ninth Prince (ZZX) were treated. The fact that they adored each other despite how different they were treated made the dynamic interesting to me. I didn't really mind ZZX acted like a spoiled brat. He was powerful, doted on, and he was used to getting his ways. I liked how the present was weaved into the past with mysteries around XZN and LBY. How we got to know about the past because of the crimes committed in the present. I couldn't stop reading. Second Half I consider the second half of this story after XBA remembers all of ZZH's memories. It wasn't completely boring, but it was sort of bland? I was expecting to have an idea about what XBA would do to make sure past tragedies wouldn't happen again, but the story just kept throwing him around. Basically I was expecting all the suffering to end, but it just continued LOL. Everyone was out to get XBA and he wasn't even powerful enough to defend himself. I'm not too disappointed in the second half since it's understandable all these characters moved for their own gain. XBA who didn't have any selfish desires would of course find it more difficult to fight against enemies who didn't care about killing people or breaking some rules that can lead them to the deepest layers of hell after death. Main Character I wish we saw a little more of XBA's urgency. I was invested in the whole Celestial being and Imperial destiny and how it breeds calamity, but we never really understood why XBA needed to go through all that BS. I also wished we had a plot point where XBA realizes how to fulfill that destiny and willingly take on power if it means maintaining the peace of the world. Because that's what he lacked on his previous life. He didn't have much urgency. For most of the story, it just felt like XBA was a billiard ball that world liked to toss around, and he's on the defensive. I definitely liked his change at the end but DAMN I wished we had more glimpses of that internal conflict and the moment he finally realized for himself that he needed to take on power to suppress others from causing harm. The Main CP Lastly, let's talk about the controversial. I hated FWS for tormenting XBA both in the past and present. I also hated how prideful ZZH was and refused to coax his brother in the past. But the way they acted based on how their characters were introduced was reasonable to me. It was incredibly frustrating, sure, but it didn't feel like it was put there purely for angst. The characters stayed consisted throughout the story, and their stubbornness really encapsulates how stubborn people could be imo lmao. The change in how they interacted changed a lot throughout the story and I find that interesting. We start off with a hateful FWS flirting with XBA, then ZZX's first love for ZZH, then ZZX's obsessive and hateful love for ZZH, then FWA and XBA's ignorance is a bliss love, then FWA coaxing XBA and acknowledging he was wrong for the things he's done in the past. One thing I noticed tho, I think the author has trouble writing fluffy smut cause the scenes were either kinda fluffy but still kinda noncon, or we just don't see it at all. But the hard noncon scenes always gave me a punch in the gut. !!SPOILERS END!!
Overall, I think this story has its own merits, and it definitely delivers as a dogblood novel. It definitely made me feel pain I haven't experienced before. It made me feel angry in a way I haven't been angry before (and not at the writer, but at the characters and their situation).
But would I reread this? No. Would I be reading other stories from this author? Nope, and it's not because I have beef with their writing, I just can't handle that much suffering anymore XD. If you like to suffer, I definitely recommend this novel.

Okay so clearly I need danmei recs that are enemies to lovers or at least "mutually suspect each other" to lovers. I like the slow burn it creates, the suspense that their developing crush might be on the enemy/bad guy, that sort of thing. I think that's part of why I like Silent Reading Zhoudu (the possibility of Fei Du actually plotting crimes is delicious and i Eat Up that dynamic), Guardian Weilan (they're both feeling each other out and investigating), 2ha (Mo Ran starts the novel right off with: I died for this man but I also HATE him and that's a very intriguing hook for me)
So any other danmei that have this in the dynamic?

Time Flies and You Are Here. 7
Story: 8
Acting: 9
Chemistry: 10
Comparable to: ? a lot of historical cdrama’s that have backstabbing relatives
It’s a repeat rinse cycle with both main leads and what I mean by that is they fight a lot…..a lot lot, make up, then fight all over again without learning anything. If that’s not your thing then you’ll definitely hate this drama. I really enjoyed the chemistry between the two and the overall storyline it can get a bit overdramatic at times. It’s by no means perfect, but it’s an enjoyable watch if you fast forward with remote. It’s one of those it’s so bad, but why can’t I stop watching drama.

Danmei and Baihe C Novels and Manhua Officially Licensed in English
Things are getting licensed fast enough that keeping a list like this up-to-date is basically impossible, but I saw someone asking in the tags so I figured I'd try. All titles are danmei unless otherwise noted (very little baihe is licensed so far). I've included Chinese titles and linked novelupdates for each title when I was able to find them, but sometimes publishers change the original titles so much that I can't track them down, apologies.
Basically: this is everything I know of as of April 12, 2024. There might be more. I tried.
For the latest danmei news, Danmeinews.com is a great resources.
Note that some of this information was sourced from this Carrd, last updated in March 2023.

Honorable Mentions:
There are a handful of titles I know of that are official translations of C Novels, where the C Novels aren't danmei or baihe but are often treated as adjacent within fandom (as in: I've seen people shipping characters from them, lol). I've included two above under the entry for titles from Aloha Comics (Link Click and Nirvana in Fire) and here are a couple others I currently know of:
The Grave Robbers' Chronicles (Daomu Biji) by Nanpai Sanshu (six volumes are available in English from Things Asian Press
The Legend of the Condor Heroes (She Diao Yingxiong Chuan) by Jin Yong from St. Martin's Press
Romance of the Three Kingdoms (Sanguo Yanyi), attributed to Luo Guanzhong, available in multiple translations
The Seven Heroes and Five Gallants (Zonglie Xiayi Chuan), attributed to Shi Yukun, there are two translations to English listed at the linked Wikipedia page
Note that to the best of my knowledge both of these are considered very substandard translations. I've personally read the official DMBJ translations and... yeah... and I've heard the LOCH translation is also mediocre.
I will add to the "Honorable Mentions" list if I find any other more mainstream titles with official translations.
Please don't come at me for including a couple classics. The characters shippable, what can I do? I've written fic for Romance of the Three Kingdoms...
-
A handful of other licenses are mentioned on the Carrd I linked at the beginning of this post; I have no idea the status of those titles and wasn't able to find information on them while putting together this post other than what was listed on that Carrd, so I've omitted them.
As a final note, I've personally purchased from every printer on this list EXCEPT Monogatari Novels (I'm holding off because of the controversy and will see how things play out) and Chaleuria (which I vaguely knew existed but nothing beyond that).
Seven Seas translation varies but the editing is general strong and the editions are sturdy and nice. Extras that have come with final volumes are lovely. I am buying literally everything they publish except for You've Got Mail, due to information about the author that was shared with me that the author is a transphobe. Note that Kinnporsche by Daemi is not danmei as it's Thai (and I've heard unsavory things about the author - I don't have a link for that as the information was shared with me on Discord, and I encourage you to do your own research rather than taking my word for it). No judgement if you make a different choice than me, to be clear, I'm just sharing the information I have and why I personally am not buying the books). Note that Seven Seas isn't without controversy, especially for treating their contractors poorly resulting in them unionizing. Some people have also been unhappy with the fidelity of their translations compared to the original Chinese (I've been satisfied personally but ymmv).
Peach Flower House has inconsistent inconsistent editing quality, but the books are very readable, and I'm excited that they're working with translators such as E. Danglars. I haven't bought any of their special editions so can't speak to their extras, but I've bought all their print translations and will continue to do so going forward.
I just got my first title from Via Lactea last week and finished reading it on Sunday, and the translation read very well and there were minimal errors. It also came with a bundle of cute extras, which I wasn't expecting and pleased, and writing this post has caused me to cave and spend $150 to buy the rest of their books. Thank you, tax refund. (Should I spend this money? No. Did I anyway? ...)
No Rosmei titles have actually shipped yet, so I can't speak to their quality, though the previews they've shared on social media (as outlined here, for example) read decently and I'm optimistic. The cover art is also lovely, and they've been communicative and responsive, for example they've already issued a statement related to a recent controversy over perceived poor marketing for At the World's Mercy.
Tl:dr, the above is absolutely everything I personally know about mlm and wlw Chinese novels and manhua that have been licensed for English publication. I hope it helps someone.
Now go forth, and buy some books!

You are all fired for not informing me that this danmei:
Is getting a Thai-Taiwan coproduction adaptation:
AAAAAAA!!!
I am beside myself!!!!
I have not read this particular novel but (1) I love love love this author's Wu Chang Jie (in my top 5 danmeis) and enjoyed a couple of her moderns, and (2) this is a freaking period setting aaaaaaaaa!!!!!
Most BL dramas do little for me because a lot of them are modern coming of age tales (mostly fluffy) and I am just too old, angst-junkiish and costume drama obsessed to care. But this? AAAAAAAA!!!!

Don't mind me just compiling my favorite lc musical clips so I don't lose them. No particular order. pt.1 (pt.2, pt.3, pt.4 and pt.5 here)

21/11/2023, Xian Donyue yeets Shu Rongbo across the room

17. 24/12/2023 noon, Shu Rongbo and Wu Yihan being cute with the plushies. Also Shu Rongbo accidentally stabbed himself with Xian Dongyue's headband
18. 22/01/2024, Guo Hongxu gotta forcefully remove Shu Rongbo's leg off his. Also Shu Rongbo's laugh when he won rock paper scissor pls he's so cute
19. 30/12/2023 noon, Du Guangyi looks so happy poisoning Shu Rongbo
20. 11/11/2023, the first ever. Wang Minhui and Cai Qi still did the tutting facing each other
21. 25/01/2024, have this one of Cao Muzhi looking very dazed and out of it at first for some reason. Also Zhu Hanbin gotta change the dialogue a bit bcs he unexpectedly won with rock instead of paper
22. 15/01/2024, Guo Hongxu flustered bcs of Ji Xiaokun with a professional camera
I will add more to this list as they come, probably semi-frequently. Especially since Cao Muzhi's birthday is tomorrow so I wanna search a clip of that, as well as one of Bai Zhuoming bcs how come I have none of him? And of Fu Xiangan as soon as he debuts.
Also thank you to @chocolatexiaoshi for helping me complete the schedules!

Wu Chang Jie Thoughts and Impressions...
Tumblr media
I am currently at Chapter 80 of this series, and so far, here are my thoughts:
Summary:
Wu Chang Jie is a story of two Imperial brothers from the past who used to have the closest bond turn against each other. As they reincarnate back on this world, one decides to forget everything and live life anew, while the other chooses to remember every entanglements, every evil the siblings have committed in the past.
When their paths cross-- one still with memories, the other forgotten-- mysteries from their past life resurfaces.
(warning: noncon, gaslighting, graphic r*pe)
(note: this story is not incest)
I will be talking mostly about the flashback since that is what the story focuses on so far.
Themes:
There are so many themes interwoven in this story that made me think I would have enjoyed this story even if it didn't have any romance.
The big ones I noticed were family, greed for power and morality. In the flashback with the Imperial Family, our main character, ZZH is easily considered as the black sheep. His morals did not align with the family's greed for power. His mother wanted him to take the throne and be a Crown Prince, while he just wanted to tend to his orchids, take care of his mother and younger brother and live a peaceful life.
The story showed how far certain characters would go for their greed for power. Some had wanted power purely for self-satisfaction, others craved it for self-defense, while others wanted it to protect their loved ones. Seeing different characters and their motivation for power, and how far they were willing to go for it was honestly interesting to me. How much were they willing to give up their morality to get what they wanted?
Our character who maintained a pure heart despite his circumstances kept being forced to challenge his morality. Should he step away or bare the burden of being born in this family? Should he always be transparent to others and never keep secrets? Should he grab power for himself so that he would be able to protect himself and his loved ones?
Characters:
Most of the characters have their own motivations whether it be good or bad. Life in the palace was cut-throat with everyone eyeing for power and schemed behind the scenes. Children started off innocent, befriending each other before growing up and growing apart due to Palace politics.
In the middle of it all was the Eldest Prince and the Ninth Prince. The Eldest Prince, ZZH suffered from the strictness of his parents. He was a pure soul thrown into a world full of scheming and filth, and he grew up being disillusioned by his parents and the place he grew up in.
The Ninth Prince represented what would be called the good end of stick in the Palace. He was favored by the Emperor, he was just as talented as his Eldest brother, if not more, and he was promised a great weapon to wield. He was living in the illusion of the Palace. No one dared oppose him. He had a simplistic mindset that everything would be solved so long as he was stronger than his opponent.
These two are our two main characters. It's interesting to see the contrast with how they grew up and their temperament as a result of that. The story plunged them in more and more difficult situations and I loved seeing how they find their way out.
Personal thoughts:
I was honestly skeptical when I started reading this series. I read a lot of bad reviews and hate about the male lead, calling him selfish and possessive, but I didn't really mind it. In the flashback, the male lead was still in his early teens, so it's understandable to me he would be selfish. Not to mention he grew up to be the son of the Emperor, talented and doted upon, it was to be expected he would be so spoiled. Even so, when he realized his brother was suffering, he was quick to care for him and find ways to make him feel better, in his own simplistic way. Was he a little off in the head? Yeah. But this character is also a representation of how life at the Imperial Palace can fk someone up despite being favored, and that's what makes him interesting.
I have only been reading until Chapter 80 of this story, so my opinion might differ, but for now, I am loving everything about it. The themes, the characters, the way present is blended into the past, and the mystery.
