RENDEZVOUS WITH DESTINY????? MILLER I LOVE 😍😍😍
*deep breath*
OK OK OK THIS ACTUALLY HAS HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE
SO
In WW2, the first army paratrooper division was created: the 101st division. To this day, they’re still one of the most decorated army divisions of all time. Crazy stuff.
Their motto? “Rendezvous with Destiny”.
... two of our boys are a part of one of the regiments of the 101st division (divisions are divided into regiments, which are divided into battalions but I digress) in this story.
ALSO
The nickname of the 101st is the Screaming Eagles.

A Soldiers Kind of Nurse (open starter)
A nurse. It was something she’d always wanted to be. And it would happen that as she started to train, her job would be in more demand than ever.
The war was cruel and dangerous and frightening. She knew this. But that didn’t stop the excitement when she finally finished her training, ready to be sent out to a makeshift military hospital in a large country manor. Admittedly it was just volunteer work, but she was fed and housed and it was worth it to feel like she’d actually made some contribution to the war effort.
She liked to talk lots. Not because she thought it was interesting, more just to see a smile and a memory flicker across someone’s face as she tended to them. Little stories, anything to keep someone’s mind off what was happening. This was what she would do with her next patient - someone new, perhaps, or just someone she hadn’t seen before. “Hello sir. I’m Ava, I’m going to take a quick look at you and figure out what needs to be done. Can you hear me and see me well?”

Woii au is so sad, Jon slipping in Russian/Yiddish when he speaks of Robb because those are the languages he associates with his brother, a familiar fallback. Something he always shared with his family 😭😭
Everyone is like "oh we didn't know you were Russian and Jewish"
Jon teaches Sam a bit of Russian and it makes him think of Robb whenever Sam uses one of the little phrases he taught him.

I love the idea of Jon writing a letter for back home only for him to get frustrated because he can't write down anything good so he starts cursing in Russian and Yiddish
Oof I made it sadder. When Jon hears about Robb’s death, he eventually breaks down sobbing while the other boys are asking if he’s okay, and subconsciously slips into another language while trying to talk about Robb.

This is for the woii au, but I saw that the Starks are Russian and I love the idea of Lyarra and Rickard passing the language down to their kids and Ned making sure the kids speak it but Jon is the best at it and once he meets other Russian soldiers he bonds with them! Everyone is vaguely surprised over this
To expand on this: since they’re Jewish-Russian, they would also speak Yiddish. Also, Lyarra lives in this AU, and I’m imagining her speaking in both Yiddish and Russian to her grandkids.
And Jon casually revealing his multilingual status at some point and everyone else being surprised is definitely going in the AU.

Are they still aristocrats in the ww2 au?
Oh dude I’ve barely gotten that far yet lol. These are just basic concepts I’ve got floating around that I’m trying to fit in a timeline. I’m still kind of deliberating on whether to make them from America or the UK. On one hand, making them from the UK (specifically London) makes a lot of stuff work (like having Bran and Rickon be sent to the countryside). However, I know more about the US’s involvement in WW2 than the UK’s (when I say “I know more”, I mostly mean “I’ve watched Band of Brothers a few times”. And, I’m American and thats just the knowledge that I’m more familiar with). Also, the fic/AU is mostly Jon-focused because I have Wall Boys brainrot, and it’s pretty important in my story for him to be a medic. BUT, medics in the UK army during WW2 were from the RAMC, while US combat medics were chosen during basic training. I’m imagining Jon enlisting/being drafted, and expecting to be a combative soldier, yet being chosen as a medic. Basically, turning “chosen as a steward instead of a ranger” into “picked as a combat medic”. They’re all, like, 18-20 here so no Lord Commander plotline stuff, obviously.
So I might be making them from America. Also, an anon back from when this whole AU started about two weeks ago suggested that the Starks are Jewish in modern AUs. I’m imagining Rickard and Lyarra to be Russian Jews who immigrated in the late 1890s. Um... thinking of making their last name to have been Starikov, and then they changed it to Stark when they immigrated. So, Rickard and Lyarra (who are not first cousins in this AU, there’s no need for that, thank you very much) are Jewish Russian immigrants to the US and started their family there. Rickard does still fight and die in WW1, though (about 40% of US soliders in WW1 were immigrants or the children of immigrants, because of the massive amount of immigration to the US in the late 1800s and early 1900s). Lyarra is gonna live actually, cause why not. Grandma Lyarra? Absolutely.
I’m not imagining them as aristocrats, as they aren’t powerful figures here, of course. They’re just kinda... basic everyday people.
