Sketching a Library | The Lunchtime Portraits
Tumblr media
Oxford draws a lot of artists, so the Bodleian Library is not a surprising place to find someone with a sketching table and project. This is local painter, Merlin Porter. While we were talking, we exchanged business cards, but not before he busied himself with his own card. What happened in that very brief moment was an instant pencil portrait of me with my camera. Coolest thing ever.

Sick & Tired | The Lunchtime Portraits
Tumblr media
I can easily imagine this to be one of life's less rewarding tasks, sitting around in a mascot costume, likely for very spare wages, only to drum up business for someone else. Just today, in fact, I watched some total stranger pinch one of this gentleman’s eyes as he walked past. So on the day that I took this photo, I was unsurprised at this honest display of emotion.
Due to the fast film and bright daylight, I had to stop down to about f16 just to be able to shoot at 1/500th of a second, my fastest shutter speed.

Film Roll, 15 December 2014
This roll of film had a rough end to it. I don’t remember having any trouble, but I must have fumbled it, taking it out of the camera, because I definitely lost a few frames to light damage. For others, some shown here, I had to do some pretty hefty repairs in Photoshop. As well, I think that something must have rested against the emulsion side as it was drying, otherwise, I can’t explain some of the distortion in the last frame, below.
I received a tip, back in December of last year, that there would be a steam train pulling into Oxford Central. So, there I was, on the day. I had myself planted and ready to take a great money shot of the locomotive pulling into the station, when some woman stepped out, right in front of me to take a mobile phone snap. Thanks, lady. Well, I still got a few shots that made me happy, even still. (Ha!)
This guy above was being scolded by the platform attendant for going over the yellow line, despite repeated warnings.
This last shot was taken in the Ashmolean Museum, and it took the most light damage. Even though I liked the composition and the weird effect of the emulsion damage that I mentioned earlier, I was still going to write it off. When my wife saw it and immediately mourned for it, I decided to do some tinkering with the scanned image. I usually don’t spend much time digitally manipulating my images, so I enjoyed the attempt to save this one. Think of it as my tribute to Escher.

William Reddaway and Strider | The Lunchtime Portraits
Between May and November of this year (2013), William Reddaway and his horse, Strider, traveled 2674 miles around the United Kingdom and, so far, have raised £46,000 for three charities in Gloucestershire. During their ride, they visited 30 cathedrals, and, indeed, it was in front of Christ Church Cathedral that I met Strider who was good enough to gather his rider for a photo. See their website and blog to learn more about the charities and their travels. *  Rolleiflex 2,8F Planar  * *  Ilford FP4 Plus  * *  Developed in Kodak TMax  * *  Epson V500 scanner  * *  Photoshop CS6  * www.DavidStumpp.com

Test Subjects | The Lunchtime Portraits
I have a friend who swears by the Rolleiflex 6000 series cameras, so when I found myself with an opportunity to try one, I did. It was, indeed, an impressive camera; solidly built, with great features. Like slipping into the driver's seat of a Cadillac. A big draw to the camera was the built in metering system, so I put away the spot meter for my test rolls and used the camera's readings. They were right on. The optics are Zeiss, my favorite, and the camera's size didn't differ dramatically from my twin lens cameras.
I am a lover of mechanical film cameras, though, and this camera was too electronic for me. In particular, the film advance is motorized and quite noisy. As much as I appreciate the 6003 as a professional's camera, a tool engineered for spectacular results, I do wish it had been designed with a hand crank. In the end, my quiet, simple, non-electric cameras remain a better fit for me.
