MUSICIANS AS REVOLUTIONARIES -- REVOLUTIONARIES IN HEAVY MUSIC.
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on English rock band THE BEATLES shooting the promotional video clip for the single "Revolution" at Twickenham Film Studios, St. Margarets, London, England, on September 4, 1968. Director: Michael Lindsey-Hogg.
“I did the slow version and I wanted it out as a single: as a statement of THE BEATLES’ position on Vietnam and THE BEATLES’ position on revolution. For years, on THE BEATLES’ tours, Brian Epstein had stopped us from saying anything about Vietnam or the war."
-- JOHN LENNON (1940-1980)
“Plugging directly into the Abbey Road desk and pushing the needles into the red achieved the fuzz-guitar sound."
According to George Martin:
"We got into distortion on that, which we had a lot of complaints from the technical people about. But that was the idea: it was John’s song and the idea was to push it right to the limit. Well, we went to the limit and beyond.""

Blu-ray Review - The Beatles: Get Back
The Beatles’ final studio album release Let It Be was originally released in 1970 and last year it got quite the anniversary celebrations: the deluxe edition release of Let It Be and the companion book, as well as the three-part documentary The Beatles: Get Back. Directed by Peter Jackson and using the footage filmed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg, the documentary took a deep dive into the recording of The Beatles’ Get Back album recorded in 1969, then shelved and put away while they recorded and released Abbey Road and then returned to finish Get Back with producer Phil Spector, to release it as their final album in May 1970, by which point the band was essentially over.

movie poster
Beatle fans have often debated Abbey Road vs. Let It Be as being the final Beatles album. While Abbey Road feels like the final statement from the Fab 4, Let It Be was the last album released and therefore historically it is the last album. Even before I owned this album, I listened to my Dad’s copy many times and even acquired some bootleg cassette tapes of the Get Back sessions. People don’t talk about Let It Be the same way they talk about Revolver, Rubber Soul, Sgt. Pepper, White Album or Abbey Road, and I can’t understand why. It is a fantastic album from start to finish. As I noted in my album review of the reissue of Let It Be last year, “When a lot of fans listen to the original album or watch the Let It Be documentary film (now out of print), it feels like we’re witnessing the band breaking up. There was tension and bickering and it didn’t seem like the joy and happiness of their earlier years.“

the famous rooftop concert
While the band was recording the album, they were also being filmed for the 1970 documentary Let It Be, directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg. The 1970 doc has been out of print for quite some time (I got my copy though!). For the last few years, Jackson has been working on a documentary about this recording session while having full access to the footage that was filmed for Let It Be. Jackson’s 3-part documentary clocks in at almost 8 hours. Filmed over the course of January 1969, the doc begins at Twickenham Film Studios, then Apple Studios, and then the rooftop concert at Apple Corps headquarters. This documentary has put the entire recording of this album into an entirely different context. After seeing Let It Be and listening to the album, it is often thought of that this is where the band came apart at the seems. But there were more than a few moments of camaraderie and joking around. While there was moments of tension (one of the band members actually quits), this working relationship was like a marriage or a brotherhood, where there are highs but also lows.
Tumblr media
blu-ray release
My goodness - the original doc footage looks spectacular. Jackson and his team deserve so much credit for the preservation of this footage! Now as for the blu-ray release, in my review last year I gave the documentary 5 out of 5 stars and I named it my #1 Documentary of 2021, so it’s not surprise I loved the blu-ray too! There are no special features or deleted scenes. It’s kinda hard to ask for deleted footage when Jackson whittled down 60 hours of footage to 3-parts that are combined 8 hours. There are some collectible cards. But the real reason to buy this blu-ray (especially if you’re a Beatle fan who doesn’t have Disney+) is the picture and sound quality of the doc itself! This is raw, emotional, and visceral and more than just for Beatles fans, anyone who loves music should be seeing this. I out and out loved every minute of this! Jackson’s best movie by a landslide.

Lunga Vita All’Italia.
I know this outbreak has been difficult on everyone.  It’s not easy staying inside and not seeing your loved ones.  Italy has had it particularly bad.  My Italian brothers and sisters have been on my mind a lot lately.  While I don’t have any immediate family members left over there (hey, I’m from the working class.  There’s a reason our family had to leave Italy….), I’ve always felt connected with the Italians.  I’ve never had a bad time in Italy, and if you’ve never been there before, when you go, remember that you should try to live like an Italian.  Which is difficult to do right now since everyone is staying inside.
In addition to family, food, coffee, the sun and the beach, art, sea food, complaining (c’mon, you know I’m right about that one), fashion, and the color black, one of the many things that Italians love is music.  Before I first went to Italy, I remember I always used to wonder why me and my family were the way that we were.  And then when I went to Italy, I figured it all out.  It’s the passion.  The love for life.  The ability to soak in life and enjoy that cup of coffee (while loudly complaining about something else…ANYTHING else).  And that really comes across in the music.
Any music that an Italian makes is filled with passion.  So I decided to make a playlist of a small sample of Italian and/or Italian-American musicians. They key word is “small”.  This is just a sample, and because my playlists are 20 songs, there were a lot of musicians that I had to leave off.  One of the tough, but fun, aspects of doing a 20-song themed playlist is that I always have to leave things off.  But this does a good job of capturing a wide variety of genres and musicians, yet at the same time flowing perfectly from beginning to end. Putting Ariana Grande and Alkaline Trio back-to-back might not look good on paper, but trust me, it works!  The only criteria is that at least one band member or the solo artist needs to be Italian.  That’s it.
Before we get into the actual playlist, here are a couple of other things you might want to know:
-          Although this band is English and not Italian, I thought this might interest you in case you wanted to discover a band that’s on the up-and-coming.  I’m not sure if you’ve heard of them before or not.  But I completely disagree with Decca Records. I think this band has a fine future ahead of it.  Either way, on Saturday April 25 they are having a singalong on Youtube.  Here are the details: https://www.thebeatles.com/news/all-aboard-yellow-submarine-youtube-sing-long-watch-party
-          Unlike the English band listed above, the Afghan Whigs actually DO have an Italian bandmember. I recently discovered this full show of theirs on YouTube from 1992: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dnHPe0uNYI0&feature=youtu.be#
-          A few weeks ago my Mom sent me the following YouTube videos of beautiful music being played in Italy.  Check them out.
o   https://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&v=duX6vQvI9KU
o   https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=jIE83xTe6D8&feature=youtu.be
I hope that you enjoy this playlist and that it maybe helps you discover some new music!  I also hope that you are staying safe and healthy and doing your best to stay inside. I know it’s not easy to stay inside, but it’s the right thing to do.  In addition to protecting yourself and your loved ones, it also helps the health care workers, because if you stay in, you are one less person that they need to worry about right now.  And they are worrying about A LOT of people right now.  So let’s do our best to limit that for them.

Sgt Pepper and the Beatles
https://www.thebeatles.com/album/sgt-peppers-lonely-hearts-club-band
Sgt Pepper was an artist who worked alongside the Beatles in 1966 on their album lonely hearts club, the bands eight album.
Tumblr media
His style was very colourful and fun, something I think fits alongside the Beatles. He  was incredibly talented in achieving what they wanted.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Despite this some times it can look a little crowded but most of them work really well and is something that I could interpret myself when thinking of a style or aesthetic for my own video.

Album Review: The Beatles “Abbey Road” Super Deluxe Edition
Even though 1970′s Let It Be is the last official album released by The Beatles before their breakup, 1969′s Abbey Road is considered their last album because it was the last recording session, whereas Let It Be had mostly been recorded before Abbey Road. Whether the band knew it at the time or not (as some recent reports have suggested), it is considered by many to be the perfect ending of the band’s story. Released on Sept. 26, 1969 the band truly went all in on this album. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of this legendary album, Universal Music Group recently released a Super Deluxe Edition of Abbey Road. The release is similar to the 50th anniversary of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (which I named my #1 Reissue of 2017) and The White Album (which I got to review and, yes, named my #1 Reissue of 2018). I was lucky enough to get to review this box set: all 3 CDs, a blu-ray audio disc, and coffee table book.
Tumblr media
original album cover
CD1 is the 2019 Stereo Mix of the original Abbey Road album produced by Giles Martin (son of producer George Martin and a genius producer in his own right). This is packed with so many epic gems: “Come Together”, “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)”, “Polythene Pam”, and “The End”. What’s amazing is that its not just Lennon and McCartney’s show, two of George Harrison’s greatest compositions “Something” and “Here Comes the Sun” are here, as well as Ringo Starr’s “Octopus’s Garden”. Sounds as good as ever! CD2 and CD3 are both full of Demos and Outtakes. It is full of early demos and alternate takes. Also included in this set is a blu-ray of the album presented in Dolby Atmos, DTS-HD, and High Res Stereo audio. The book is filled with tons of photos, lyrics, articles and track by track analysis.

The Super Deluxe Edition
Look, let’s be honest here, I am a Beatle fanatic, so it’s no surprise I out and out LOVED this Super Deluxe Edition! The cool thing about this is the Sessions (CDs 2 and 3) which include some recordings of songs that didn’t appear on Abbey Road: “Goodbye” (a song McCartney wrote for Mary Hopkins), “The Ballad of John and Yoko” (released as a single that year, but wasn’t on Abbey Road), “Old Brown Shoe” (also released as a single that year, but wasn’t on Abbey Road), and “Come and Get It” (a song McCartney wrote for Badfinger). These are worth the price tag alone. It reminds me of the same excitement I had about The Beatles Anthology albums including so many never released takes and hidden treasures.
