#wwx does not feel grounded and lwj feels like he has no depth

I think part of the threatening to summon lwj with jin king thing is partly like. wwx is HORRIBLE at reading people. like he’s charming. he draws people in. he’s extremely clever and brilliant. but I, personally, think he’s an idiot when it comes to reading people!
almost every wangxian interpretation I’ve ever seen has some iteration of ‘wwx can read lwj while lwj seems expressionless’ and I am always FLOORED how people got that from any of the media. the person who can read lwj is his brother! not wei at the time of my death the man who hated me and my demonic cultivation most was non other than hanguang jun wuxian. not wei lan zhan has a crush on mianmiam wuxian. not wei I couldn’t admit to myself I wanted to sleep with lwj until after I died and got resurrected and we’re all being held hostage wuxian.
fic writers out here are like ‘wwx understands lwj best!’ meanwhile xichen is over here on his fourth cup of ‘insert number of days’ since lwj has been irrational about the cultivation world’s number 1 criminal now that wen ruohan is dead’ coffee like
Am I a fucking joke to you
ANON YOU ARE CORRECT ON ALL POINTS IMO. The very first thing that made me go "ohhhh, I don't think I like this" reading the novel was when LWJ showed up and WWX was genuinely convinced that LWJ despised him and was going to kill him. Like. What? I totally get not realizing the depth or nature of his feelings! But no discernible emotional attachment on WWX's part? They're not even friends? This makes LWJ forcibly dragging WWX back to Cloud Recesses extremely sketchy. What am I even doing here?
And the thing is, I could see WWX's obliviousness being used effectively! LWJ is the one who invited him to Jinlintai for Jin Ling's ceremony, after all; from what I can tell, it's entirely reasonable for WWX in the novel to think LWJ lured him deliberately into the Qiongqi Pass ambush. WWX could've approached LWJ with a mixture of distrust and hostility on the grounds that LWJ tried to kill him in his past life (deceitfully via a gesture of friendship, no less!), and been utterly bewildered by LWJ's behavior towards him for that reason. His feelings for LWJ then change and grow because he's learning more about what the hell happened with the political plot.
Instead, we just get Wei Wuxian, The Jianghu's Most Tediously Oblivious Man, and his aloof love interest who exclusively shows affection while he is drunk or while WWX is incapacitated/unconscious/whatever and won't remember, and both of them replace Gay Chicken with communication.
I can see "WWX can read LWJ like a book" for the drama specifically. Wang Yibo does an excellent job of conveying interiority so something different is always going on underneath LWJ's stoic expressions. The "you must like Mianmian!" stuff in CQL always read to me as WWX teasing LWJ knowing full well there was no truth to it (though still not getting who LWJ did have a crush on). And since the two of them are good friends in that canon (with WWX's protestations that they are TOTALLY not friends, LWJ is so BORING!! coming off as tsundere behavior rather than his honest assessment of the situation), of course they'd understand each other!
BUT EVEN THEN. EVEN THEN! LXC can read him best. LXC can read him even when LWJ demonstrates his own tsundere behavior. LXC knows his didi better than anyone else and does everything he can for LWJ's happiness and safety, and in exchange he gets kicked to the curb at the lowest point in his life. Maybe the insistence that WWX is the only person who can understand him is so ppl don't have to think about that last part too much.

5 + 1
5 times Lan Wangji holds back and 1 time he doesn't
[stupid fluffy WangXian stuff, college au, a sprinkle of jealous!lwj]
~1~
WWX is laying face down on the floor of LWJ's dorm. He stormed in with no warning, complaining about JC, and promptly plopping down onto the floor.
LWJ stares from his spot on the bed. "Wei Ying." His feet are planted on the ground, his back straight.
WWX groans, turning his head to look up at LWJ. His face is flushed and his forehead is slightly red from where it made contact with the flooring. LWJ's breath hitches.
WWX stares for a moment before smiling brightly, shifting so he's propped up on an elbow. He's so close to LWJ's legs; his gaze filled with a depth LWJ can't quite read.
"Lan Zhan."
"Lan Zhan?"
The way his voice sounds when he says his name causes a shudder to run through him. His name on those lips—lips he yearns to kiss and make his—is nearly painful. LWJ shifts his body forward ever so slightly, eyes flitting to WWX's lips. No.
He lets out a shuddering breath. "Wei Ying." He can't.
WWX's smile turns into a teasing smirk. "Aiya, Lan Zhan! You're so cute when you're mad at me."
Wait, that's not right. WWX claps a hand onto LWJ's knee, the touch burning, and pushes up to standing.
"Sorry for interrupting your studying, Lan Zhan! I'll see ya later!"
LWJ can't move or speak. He only manages a feeble "Mn," when WWX is already gone.
~2~
LWJ agreed to go to the movies with WWX, not realizing he'd also asked WN to join. He has nothing against the guy, really. Only…
"Wen Ning! You're just the cutest!" WWX squeals, tossing an arm around his shoulder to bring him close. "Lan Zhan, isn't he the cutest?"
LWJ glances—a cold and indifferent glare—before focussing is attention back to the selection of food options at the theatre. WN is decidedly /NOT/ the cutest. It is an objective fact that WWX is.
He can't say that. It'll sound rude to WN. He'll be teased. He can't. But the sight of WWX on WN, and WN not pushing him away, causes a sickening tension to settle in LWJ's stomach.
He'd make WWX /his/.
The pair (read: WWX) chat animatedly while LWJ stands silently. It's nothing new, not really. But that doesn't mean LWJ is fine with it. If he could, he'd grab WWX by the wrist and tug him over into his body.
He'd wrap a protective arm around him, he'd relish in the way WWX would feel against his body.
LWJ quickly quashes the feeling and orders the movie snacks.
~3~
"Wangji, why don't you invite him?"
LXC's voice is soft, almost unassumingly so, but LWJ knows his brother well. He's goading him into doing or saying something that LWJ, frankly, isn't willing to do.
The very moment they put away the last dish, LXC speaks once more.
"Brother," he chides cooly. "No talking during meals."
LXC only gives a knowing look before complying. They finish their meals in a comfortable silence.
"You clearly want him to come," he says, to which LWJ only glares. "If you won't invite him, I will."
"Do /not!/"
LXC chuckles, but his eyes hold a sympathetic sadness for his younger brother. "Alright, I won't."
LWJ nods once curtly and stalks out of the kitchen and into his brother's living room, mind racing.
It's a /family/ tradition. Purely the Lan brothers and their uncle. The thought of bringing an outsider, WWX notwithstanding, is unfathomable.
And yet…
LWJ aches with want. He silently curses his brother for bringing the idea up and placing it in his head.
He'd hope. And he can't do that.
What does he know? Too much, apparently. Once he's done cursing his brother, he curses himself. He curses himself for wanting, for being weak, for humouring ideas, and for being so easily read by his brother.
That's truly his downfall. He prides himself on not being easily read, but LXC sees. His hand twitches for his phone. He truly does want WWX to join them. It's not like it'd be a big deal, LXC would easily placate LQR about it. It's only a weekend camping trip they do yearly.
What's the big deal is someone else joins them one time?
He will not ask WWX.
LWJ steals himself and focuses on LXC when he comes into the room with a deck of cards to pass the time.
~4~
It's 8:57 pm when WWX calls him. LWJ had just gotten into bed, beginning a quick meditative session when his phone buzzed on the nightstand.
"LAN ZHAN! LAN ZHAN! I NEED HELP!"
WWX sounds frantic and LWJ's heart pounds as fear sets in.
"Wei Ying? What is it?"
"My laptop! I'm such an idiot. Please please please tell me my laptop is in your dorm. I'm losing my mind! My assignment is on there and it's due by midnight tonight!"
Oh. Missing laptop. That it all. He's breathes a silent sigh of relief knowing WWX is not in any harm. "I will check."
He quickly scans the room, noticing that sure enough there's a laptop resting on the couch.
"Lan Zhan? Lan Zhan? Please?"
He ignores the way those words, said that way, make his body buzz.
"Mn, it is here."
"THANK GOD! I'll come get it now!" He hangs up. 10 minutes later there's a knock at the door. LWJ opens it and WWX runs into the room in a flurry, panting as he rests against a wall.
LWJ promptly walks over to get the laptop and bring it to WWX.
"Wei Ying."
WWX glances up to meet his gaze, then he sees the laptop. "Lan Zhan! You're a lifesaver!" WWX takes the laptop and wraps LWJ in a tight hug. "I don't know what I'd do without you."
He leaves. Don't.
The words rings through his head on repeat. 'I don't know what I'd do without you.' LWJ belatedly realizes he didn't hug WWX back at all when he pulls away. "I'm so sorry for keeping you up past your absurd bedtime," he teases with a wink that makes LWJ's stomach drop. "Ugh! I could kiss you, thanks again, Lan Zhan!" Yes. No. Don't.
LWJ doesn't move or say anything. He could've. He didn't. He's frozen in time.
~5~
Parties are the worst. There's too much noise and too many people. Even a small party with less than 10 people, thought admittedly better than 20+, is a bothersome time.
Someone suggested they play truth or dare. LWJ thinks it was either NHS or JYL. It was a horrible idea.
Most of them had been drinking, LWJ was there in body but wishing he were anywhere else. He only came because WWX asked.
LWJ sinks into a false sense of security, beginning to even enjoy the game more as an observer than anything.
Now they're sitting in a circle and playing a terrifying game he doesn't want to play. He doesn't drink. He won't. He can't. So when he's asked a truth, he answers. Thankfully no one has asked him anything that he'd even want to drink for in the first place.
Until WWX's fifth dare.
"Wei-xiong," NHS sing-songs with a drunken lilt. "I dare you to kiss Lan Wangji for /FIVE/ seconds!" He cackles as if he'd made the funniest joke ever.
LWJ only hears a muted ringing, his blood rushing to drown out everything. He wants it.
LWJ meets WWX's gaze. There's something there. A heat; desire. He's imagining it.
"Lan Zhan?" WWX's voice is quiet as he leans closer. LWJ doesn't move. The question is clear on his face: 'Can I kiss you?'
Every fibre of his being screams 'YES!'
He doesn't move. He doesn't say anything. He's frozen.
As much as he wants it, he wants it to be real. To mean something. Not for it to just be some silly dare in a stupid game and for it to never be anything more.
WWX doesn't feel that way, he knows it. It's fine. WWX notes the lack of enthusiastic consent, or consent at all, and leans back with an understanding smile. He doesn't understand.
"Huaisang, Lan Zhan doesn't want me to kiss him. I'm not gonna make him uncomfortable, choose another dare."
His kindness makes it worse.
~6~
"Lan Zhan~" WWX drawls from beside him on the couch. They are in WWX's dorm watching some shows with an absurdly aggressive American chef.
"Mm."
"Do you like Mianmian?"
His heart stops. Or, he could have sworn it did. It might as well have. LWJ looks at WWX with wide eyes.
WWX laughs. It's an awkward laugh filled with nervous energy and uncertainty.
"A-ah, well. I was just wondering because it kinda seems like you—"
"No," he says firmly, snapping out of the initial shock of the question. WWX seems to relax with relief, but there's still an air of uncertainty around him. It's a strange sight.
"Oh, good. Yeah. That's good," he mumbles, nodding to himself and turning his attention back to the TV.
What?
2 and a half episode blur by before WWX speaks again. "Lan Zhan…"
LWJ lets out a small huff. "Wei Ying."
"Lan Zhan," he whines.
"Wei Ying." LWJ's hands are in tight fists.
"Lan—"
LWJ moves so fast it startles them both. He didn't think, his body just did it. He pinned WWX down onto the couch and hovered over him. WWX let out a small gasp of surprise, meeting LWJ's gaze with dark eyes. LWJ's heart pounded in his chest.
What the hell is he doing? He can't, he needs to back away. Cool off. Leave. Ignore. Forget.
He needs to lock his feelings up and—
"Kiss me," WWX breathes. He does. It's bruising and awkward at first, but the two quickly melt into it. It feels so wrong, but so /so/ right. LWJ's body is on fire as WWX snakes his arms around his back and buries his hands in LWJ's hair.
WWX moans into the kiss, writhing slightly under him. LWJ growls. It's so natural. Them. Together.
LWJ can't imagine anything but WWX. He's his everything. His self-control fully and truly breaks; he's astounded at how long he held out for, but he doesn't think on it too much. He's rather distracted at the moment. WWX nips at his bottom lip, eliciting a groan from LWJ. He feels WWX smile into the kiss.
LWJ moves to kiss his chin, jaw, the space around his ears. He nips and bites all those places and WWX sighs shakily.
"Ah~ Lan Zhan… Lan-er-gege."
That ignites something new in him. LWJ licks a stripe up WWX's neck before burying his nose in the crook of his neck.
"Mine," he growls.
WWX laughs, light and airy. It's the most beautiful sound he's ever heard.
Uhhhh hey lol. So that's my first thread fic, I usually just write fics on AO3 but this was calling to me and I wanted to test this format out.
"Mn," he agrees. "I'm yours, Lan Zhan."
----------
Anyway! I would love to hear what y'all think about this I hope you liked it! Have a great day!

Hello, this is the prompt I wanted to send you.
WangXian fic set during the sunshot compaign after one of their famous fights. They stumble upon an array that shows the future and It activated when WWX touched it. The array started showing glimpses of married and in love WX going on dates (yunmeng date), night hunting together, kissing, pillowtalks and aftercare, adopting children, teaching at the CR... YLLZ! WWX feeling jealous and bitter and not understanding why. The reveal that LWJ's husband is WWX, his falling out with the Jiang sect and JC's role in his death. Basically a fic where YLLZ! WWX finds out that after all these hardships he is finally going to be happy, have his own family and be with the love of his life where he is loved, cared for, respected and appreciated. And longing to have that future with LWj.
It can be a fix it fic with a happy ending please.
Posted on Ao3 here
Alternating POV - Wei Wuxian - Lan Wangji - Wangxian - A bit angsty with happy ending - Mature. Betaed by Moonyju.
I hear your heart beating in your chest
Wei Wuxian isn't the one to dwell on the past or look towards the future. He lives every day as it comes and faces every challenge without carrying burdens forward.
He has never planned for his future, not really. Some vague dreams here and there, but nothing real. Wei Wuxian learned at the tender age of four that the future is unpredictable. One day you wake up to your mother's warm smile and your father's gentle words. The next day, you have lost those things forever. Life has proven this to him repeatedly.
Future is uncertain, present is the only certainty Wei Wuxian believes in.
So, when he and the illustrious Second Jade of Lan stumble into an array while rescuing a few civilians. An illusion of sorts surrounds him, obscuring the real world outside the array. He doesn’t pay much attention to what it reveals. Instead, he focuses his attention on the array itself, carefully examining its intricacies. A single glance is enough to tell it is some sort of temporal array, a shade of what cultivators use for preservation purposes. But it also seems to have some form of an illusionary element to it. He tilts his head to the side and crouches down to study it.
“Wei Ying,” Lan Zhan calls, almost in warning but Wei Wuxian is content to ignore him for once. Lan Zhan has always drawn too much of his attention and it rankles now more than ever.
Another quarrel, another needless argument about Wei Wuxian not understanding the depth and implications of his actions. Sometimes he wonders if Lan Zhan intends to sound as dismissive or haughty as he does when he confronts him about Mo Dao. He likes to believe Lan Wangji is above such petty things, but the man’s dogged refusal to accept Wei Wuxian’s path and his relentless quest to fix something that can’t be fixed is getting on his last nerve.
“Wei Ying,” He looks up at the sharp tone, meeting a pair of golden eyes in question only to be arrested by something akin to embarrassment tinting Lan Zhan’s stoic features. He glances towards the illusion and stills, somewhat stunned by the scene before him.
It is Lan Zhan. Or a version of him. He’s broader, with more mature features and a much sharper gaze. But that’s not the most astonishing thing, no.
Lan Zhan is… kissing someone.
It is someone shorter than him, with long hair tied up and away from a fairly pretty face. Wei Wuxian eyes the way Lan Zhan cradles the face and guides it towards his kisses, gentle and full of affection.
It entrances him for a moment. He can’t help but stare at the scene, taking in how Lan Zhan seems to lean in again and again, to press closer like he can’t get enough. His heart races and he doesn’t really understand why it is suddenly so…
“Wei Ying!” He drags his eyes away from the illusion and looks at his Lan Zhan, who seems increasingly flustered despite the relatively calm expression on his face. His ears are bright red and he’s pointedly not looking in the illusion’s direction.
He smiles teasingly, “Aiya, Lan Zhan, it looks like the older version of you is more relaxed.”
“It is a trick.” Lan Zhan protests immediately but Wei Ying dips his eyes down to scan the array again and shakes his head. There are several clues that highlight the array’s purpose clearly. Lan Zhan is no less knowledgeable than he is so he must see it too.
The denial is already fading from the Second Jade’s features and Wei Wuxian stands up, brushing his knees absently. He glances at the illusion and feels something strange pool in his stomach, something like dread, when he sees the pair again. Lan Zhan is pressing the strange person to the tree behind them, pinning her- no-
He peers closer, swallowing when Lan Zhan’s hand disappears into the person’s robes. Lan Zhan’s… companion is clearly not a woman, that much was apparent at first glance. But it is even more apparent when those robes fall open under Lan Zhan’s questing fingers.
Somehow, that feels worse.
He struggles to maintain his composure and fixes a grin on his face, “Well-” The scene shifts abruptly and Wei Wuxian barely withholds a gasp, his eyes immediately drawn to the older Lan Zhan’s peaceful face. He’s sleeping, his arms wrapped loosely around the same companion from before. The room around them seems like it is in Cloud Recesses, perhaps Lan Wangji’s home?
His eyes turn back towards Lan Wangji and he takes a careful breath, heart aching for some reason. He pointedly doesn’t look at the man’s companion and silently turns to look at the array again. The time element is solid, undisturbed and clean. More than a simple illusion, a clear glimpse of the future.
But…
He looks up and the scene has changed again. Lan Wangji is with that man again. They stand side by side and the man is leaning against the Second Jade brazenly but Lan Wangji doesn’t seem to mind. He has his hand low on the man’s back, a gesture that reads distinctly possessive. The scene wouldn’t be out of place in any family. There’s a husband, there’s a wife, there’s a child clinging to the wife’s robes, and there’s a young man standing before them with a smile that speaks of affection.
The array seeks to show people a glimpse of their future. Lan Zhan is seeing his life as a settled man of a good family.
Wei Wuxian doesn’t exist.
He takes a careful breath as that thought settles in his mind. He has always known his path is treacherous but something in him burns to see life move on so peacefully without him.
The world has never had much space for him. When he was a child, no one had space to let him rest. As a youth, his place at the Lotus Pier was small, surrounded by thorns. The space keeps shrinking and shrinking ever since he stepped out of the Burial Mounds. He imagines at some point it will vanish altogether and Wei Wuxian will be forced to vanish with it.
Melancholy doesn’t suit him but the ache of it strikes him powerfully now.
The sight of Lan Zhan moving on – they’re not even friends, what does he need to move on from? – shatters something in him.
He can’t summon a smile.
Wei Wuxian locks his jaw and ignores his racing heart as the scene goes on. The young boy saying something to Lan Wangji’s partner and the partner grinning in response.
Lan Wangji’s expression is soaked in affection, despite how stoic it appears. The corners of his mouth are softer and there’s a fond light in those golden eyes. Wei Wuxian has never seen something so beautiful.
He watches as the young man leans down and plucks the child off the ground and carries him away, both of them waving to Lan Wangji and his partner until they’re out of sight.
Wei Wuxian’s heart shudders when Lan Wangji discreetly pulls his partner closer and buries his nose in his hair, expression content.
Suddenly, it is unbearable.
He brings his thumb to his mouth, ready to tear into his flesh and disrupt the seal with his blood. It would take very little to get them out of here safely. Lan Zhan has seen enough good things about his life, there’s no need to linger.
No need for him to find out that Wei Wuxian wouldn’t exist during this peaceful time. He knows the man cares about him enough to be upset if he is lost.
Just as he’s about to bite into his thumb, fingers wrap around his wrist tightly.
Wei Wuxian looks up to see Lan Zhan gazing at him with wide, stunned eyes.
```
Wangji accepts what is happening almost immediately after Wei Ying shakes his head. He has always had a more intuitive understanding of spells and talismans. It is rare for Wei Ying to be mistaken in such matters.
So, this is his future. A glimpse of things that will happen a few decades down the line. Wangji is uncertain what to make of it. His ears feel warm as he witnesses the intimacy between partners. There’s enough affection written on his older self’s face to know the relationship is real.
He looks at his… companion. He doesn’t lack beauty. A delicate countenance, inky black hair, and a pleasing form. He looks almost alarmingly similar to Wei Ying, with only small differences. There’s an echo of Wei Ying in his smile and even the way he tosses his head back and laughs reminds Wangji strongly of the man beside him.
Only Wei Ying has never looked at him like that. This man’s face is flushed with passion, lips bitten red by his partner’s kisses. There’s a teasing sparkle in his eyes that makes his breath still in his chest for a moment. It reminds him of the expression Wei Ying wore all those years ago when they ran across the rooftops in Cloud Recesses.
How… is it possible for this man to be so similar?
He glances down at the array, trying to decipher what it seeks to accomplish. Wangji has never seen anything like it but there are enough familiar elements in it to deduce its purpose. It is clearly designed to show them their future, to create a sort of mirror that reflects images of their future life into the past.
Wangji tears his eyes away and turns to Wei Ying, a few questions already forming in his mind.
Wei Ying’s expression arrests him.
Wangji stills, unable to move his gaze away from Wei Ying’s face. There’s something bitter about his grimace and flinty in his eyes. He watches the scene with an almost animal expression, lips pursed in displeasure – furious – Wangji realizes with an indrawn breath.
For a short, heartbreaking moment, he fears it is disapproval, disgust for a cutsleeve relationship.
That impression doesn’t last.
Wei Ying’s hand goes briefly to his chest and something very much like open, raw pain crosses his face, wiping away the anger. The expression… is nothing close to disgust.
It is a short, unguarded moment and it ensnares Wangji completely. His heart races in his chest as several realizations happen in an instant.
Wei Ying is an ever-smiling sprite, mischievous as they come. He rarely shows any true sorrow and Wangji has only seen him show true anger three times over their acquaintance. It is easy to become convinced that nothing can touch the formidable Wei Wuxian. But standing there, looking at Wangji’s future with a bitter expression, Wei Ying seems shattered.
The expression is devastatingly open. In that instant, Wangji has no problem understanding Wei Ying better than he has ever before.
Wei Ying’s expression twists before every inch of vulnerability is gone from his face. It is wiped clean and almost cold, colder than he has ever seen Wei Ying be. He locks his jaw and brings his hand to his mouth, his movements stiff and sharp.
Wangji shoots forward, wrapping his fingers around Wei Ying’s wrist. He feels the pulse hammering under his fingers and his own heart races in an echo of it. Wei Ying’s eyes are sharp and defensive, hiding the pain that Wangji had glimpsed clearly before.
In contrast, Wangji feels almost breathless with elation, “Don’t,” he says, pulling Wei Ying’s hand away from his mouth. His hand doesn’t shake but he feels shaken. Wei Ying scowls at him, which is also something he has never done, “Don’t.”
“Lan Wangji,” Wei Ying says curtly, “This isn’t for me to see and we have seen enough. Let go.”
Wangji tightens his fingers, unwilling to let go. He studies Wei Ying’s face carefully, finding it unreadable once again. In fact, Wei Ying is uncharacteristically quiet, not teasing him about his future partner, not commenting on the cutsleeve relationship, not even mentioning his older self’s appearance.
The silence speaks loudly.
'Don't nurture foolish hope,' Wangji thinks to himself but it grows in him anyways. It is strange that a single glimpse of an unguarded emotion is enough to alter Wangji’s perspective so much, but it does and now he isn’t inclined to let the matter go.
“Don’t destroy the array,” He requests, “Something isn’t right.” Wei Ying should be present. The array shouldn’t focus on Wangji’s future only. He doesn’t know who the strange man is but he can’t imagine being with anyone but Wei Ying.
Is his heart so fickle? Can it stray from Wei Ying that easily?
It is unsettling to consider it.
“We can figure it out once we’re away from this illusion,” Wei Ying says, making a visible effort to muster his usual nonchallance but Wangji sees they way his eyes flicker away, looking at the couple in the illusion briefly before glancing down at the array like he can’t stand the sight of it.
“Wei Ying-”
“Aiya, er-gege, what are you doing to your poor Wei Ying?”
Wangji glances sharply at the illusion as Wei Ying stills, his arm going tense in his grasp.
The pair in the illusion are now closer and somehow their conversation is audible. The voice is strange but the cadence and rhythm is entirely Wei Ying, teasing, playful, pleasant.
Wangji’s grip tightens as he sees his future self pull his companion onto his lap, a spare Lan forehead ribbon in his grasp. It has the clan markings, it belongs to a clan member but Wangji’s ribbon is already on his forehead.
He swallows and feels the pulse beating against his fingers speed up as his future self wraps the ribbon around his partner’s forehead.
“Wei Ying must wear it for today’s ceremony,” His older self says and his Wei Ying sucks in a sharp breath, his hand going lax in surprise, “Xiongzhang has requested it.”
“Well, if Xichen-ge has requested it, this one must obey,” Wei Ying sounds… happy. And it is Wei Ying. The face is different but the smile, full of mischief and life, is the same.
“What… is this?” His Wei Ying asks, baffled. He looks down to study the array more keenly, trying to determine why the illusion looks different.
Wangji is hearted to see the stiffness of his features melt into curiosity, “Lan Zhan, why would the array alter my appearance and not yours?” He asks, no longer attempting to pull away from Wangji.
The illusion is still playing in the background, showing what will happen several years down the line. But Wangji isn’t curious now. The present is so much more interesting.
Wei Ying is looking at the array, the conversation in the background is cheerful, full of intimacy and affection, the pulse against his fingers is still beating rapidly.
There’s a flush crawling up Wei Ying’s neck.
Wangji observes. He sees the blush crawl further and settle on Wei Ying’s cheeks. He sees teeth digging into soft lips, anxious. He sees eyes flicker towards him, towards the illusion, before moving away.
‘How can I bear it,’ He asks himself and gives in. He pulls the hand in his grasp to his mouth, pressing his lips against the center of Wei Ying’s palm and closing his eyes.
---
Wei Ying fears his heart will fail if this continues. The lively chatter of a couple in love surrounds them and his Lan Zhan is pressing his precious face against Wei Ying’s hand, cool but utterly content. The feel of his petal-soft lips against the rough skin of his palm is enough to drive him to distraction.
He doesn’t know how to react or what to say. He doesn’t want to pull his hand away but there’s a strange, almost unsettling sensation low in his stomach, not unpleasant, but very unfamiliar. Wei Ying has flirted with people before but he has never felt any true attraction towards them.
But the longer he remains inside this array, the more he learns about himself.
Lan Zhan moves, taking a step closer, dipping his lips lower to brush against Wei Ying’s exposed wrist.
His breath trembles as he gasps. The sensation is almost sharp, knife-like. He feels his entire body change and respond to it. He feels his fingers curl, his hair stand on end, and his body lean forward.
There’s a flash of teeth.
“Lan Zhan,” His voice is shamefully raw, everything he feels is written in the tone of it. Lan Zhan reacts immediately and Wei Ying goes, helpless against him. Lips slide over his and a warm, strong body presses close. The kiss is harsh, full of tongue and teeth. Desperate like Lan Zhan has been holding himself back and has finally been granted permission.
Wei Ying sways in place, lightheaded as a tongue slides over his and licks the roof of his mouth. ‘What is this,’ he wonders dazedly. There are strong fingers around his wrist and neck, showing no indication of every letting go. There’s a slight popping sound in his ears and he absently notes that the illusion has dispersed but Lan Zhan doesn’t give him time to think.
He yelps when Lan Zhan moves a hand down his back and grabs him under his thighs, lifting him up in a smooth movement. Next thing he knows, he’s pressed against a rough surface and his lips are captive again. His skin burns wherever Lan Zhan has touched it. His mouth feels raw and hot when they pull apart.
He stares when bright golden eyes look at him, edged with heat that he didn’t think Lan Zhan was capable of feeling.
It takes a moment for him to collect his thoughts under that direct gaze but he manages, his bruised lips curling into a teasing smile, “Er-gege, how shocking!” He leans forward, confident that Lan Zhan won’t drop him, “Look at what you’ve done to your poor Wei Ying!” He lifts the hand Lan Zhan had kept captive, showing off the redness he can feel around his wrist.
Lan Zhan glances at it but there’s no remorse in his expression, not even a hint of apology.
Wei Ying feels a delighted laughter bubble in his chest at this new revelation. The reserved and taciturn Hangjuang-jun is capable of such passion! “My, my, who would have thought you’d take advantage of me like this?” He drapes his hands around Lan Zhan’s neck, bringing his lips close to a flushed red ear, “You didn’t even ask, just held me tight and took what you wanted. How bold! How shameless!”
“Wei Ying,” Lan Zhan’s voice is lined with warning but Wei Ying doesn’t care. He feels utterly safe, utterly content, for the first time in years. What can touch him when he is in Lan Wangji’s arms?
“Is it always going to be like this?” He teases, “Now that you know I am to be yours, probably your husband or will it be wife? Will you kiss me… maybe even fuck me, whenever you wish?”
“Be silent.”
“Aiya, Lan Zhan, how can I be silent now? You have awakened my curio-” Another fierce, biting kiss interrupts him and Wei Ying laughs, delighting in Lan Zhan’s eagerness. Everything fades, all serious and practical considerations hold no meaning. Later, when he is alone in his tent, he will think about how unreachable this dream is, but now he is happy to submit to Lan Zhan.
---
War progresses as it must. Wei Ying continues to remain on his cultivation path but his touch is a bit gentler now. He isn’t as ruthless as he used to be.
It takes effort and patience. It takes many bitten back reprimands and angry words. It takes months and months of careful questioning before Lan Wangji understands the incredible, breathtaking sacrifices his beloved has made. Not even Wei Ying can stop him from seeking out Wen Qing and asking for her assistance. Not even his brother can stop him from offering shelter to her family in exchange. Not even Jiang Wanyin’s bitterness can stop Wangji from protecting Wei Ying.
He does what he must because he understands. That Wei Wuxian, the one from the array, had endured terrible strife. More strife than Wangji can ever allow his Wei Ying to suffer.
Wei Ying will survive and thrive.
Wangji will make sure of it.
“you don’t love me anymore?” for wangxian from the angst print list please ❤️❤️ (bc i love to hurt myself 😭😭)
Lan Zhan, I know you can hear me, so I’m just going to say it, alright?
You’ll probably be upset with me when you wake up and realise what I’ve done, but I’m going to do it anyway. You gave your life to save the world, so it’s only fair that someone should do the same for you.
Don’t worry about me. All members of the Phoenix Tribe will go through nirvana at least once in our lives and are reborn again. I’m just going through it a little earlier than expected, that’s all.
He finds him dancing across the lake, surrounded by giggling water spirits, his long hair fluttering behind him as he leaps and twirls, his bare feet barely grazing the surface of the water. The lotus blossoms in the lake sing in response, pink and red petals unfurling as he passes, the soft glow of their spiritual essence hovering in the air like fireflies to greet him. There’s a soft, faraway smile on his face as he greets them with a bow, before he’s gone again in a flurry of silk.
His heart thuds painfully in recognition and he’s stepping out onto the pier before he can stop himself.
At the first creak beneath his feet, all motion over the lake comes to a halt. It leaves him suddenly self-conscious as the young man pauses in mid-turn and looks at him curiously over his shoulder.
“Wei Ying,” he breathes, frozen where he stands. “You’re back.”
Other immortals have always talked reverently about the Crown Prince of the Phoenix Tribe and his beautiful eyes, an enchantingly dark, silvery grey with starlight in their depths. Once upon a time, he had been held in those eyes above all others and they had shone for him and him alone. Now they hold no recognition whatsoever.
The realisation is like a lightning strike through the heart, shattering the world beneath his feet.
“Shangshen,” Wei Wuxian says with a polite bow, his fingertips clasped in front of his chest. “What can I do for you?”
“Wei Ying,” he says, horror creeping into his veins and into his throat, strangling his voice as he speaks. “Do you know who I am?”
Wei Wuxian’s head tilts to the side, confused.
“Of course I do,” he replies as if it’s the most obvious thing in the world. “You’re Lan Wangji, the God of War.”
There was a time when Wei Wuxian would greet him with a beaming smile and boisterous laughter and throw himself into his arms without hesitation. The Wei Wuxian he remembers would have gleefully wormed his way to his side and batted his eyelashes at him until he acquiesced and showed him the affection he demanded. He searches for an inkling, a ghost of that Wei Wuxian now, only to be met with polite indifference.
It punches the air from his lungs until he’s shaking; he clenches his fists to stop himself from reaching out and grabbing hold of Wei Wuxian.
“Is there something wrong, Shangshen?” Wei Wuxian asks. Lan Wangji exhales.
“Do you not remember me?” he asks, already afraid of the answer. “Do you not remember...us?”
Wei Wuxian covers his mouth with a hand and laughs and for a moment, Lan Wangji’s heart soars with hope. Maybe this is a game and Wei Wuxian is only testing him—
“Us?” Wei Wuxian laughs again, but there is confusion in his eyes. “What do you mean? Have we met before?”
When he had woken up from his slumber after three hundred years, the fragments of his soul finally pieced together again and his heart beating to an unfamiliar rhythm in his chest, it was to the news that Wei Wuxian was gone. That he had exchanged his heart and all fifty thousand years of his cultivation for Lan Wangji’s resurrection.
The news had come, two hundred years later: the Crown Prince has returned, and Lan Wangji was out the door in an instant. Wei Wuxian is a phoenix, and phoenixes can be reborn. Wei Wuxian had come back to him at last.
That tiny shred of hope plummets back into the pit of his stomach and crumbles into dust. Wei Wuxian’s mother had warned him this may happen and his brother had cautioned him against hope, but he had not heeded their advice.
“Wei Ying,” he says numbly. “Wei Ying...I’m your husband.”
He waits with bated breath for any sign of recognition or recollection, but the confusion does not lessen in the slightest. Instead, a frown appears on Wei Wuxian’s face and he takes half a step back, suddenly wary.
“Husband?” he echoes. “Shangshen, you must be mistaken. I’ve never been married, so how can I have a husband?”
“Lan Zhan! We’re married now, so you can’t run from me anymore!”
Fondness bubbles up in his chest as he feels a pair of arms wind around his; he looks down to see Wei Wuxian beaming up at him, his dark grey eyes sparkling with mischief. He looks breathtaking in red.
There is no deception in his eyes, no amusement, no teasing; no matter how hard Lan Wangji tries, he cannot find a trace of his husband in Wei Wuxian. Still, he has to try. Wei Wuxian did not give up on him even in death, he refuses to give up on him in life.
“We were married five hundred years ago,” he tells him desperately. “It was arranged between the Nine Heavens and the Phoenix Tribe. Everyone thought we were being forced into it, but it was a love match.”
He remembers the whispers, the pitying looks they had received at the ceremony. The poor Phoenix prince, forced to marry a God almost twice his age when he could have his pick of any immortal in all the realms. He knew their age difference was larger than most and that marrying him would ruin Wei Wuxian’s chances of ever making a better match after his soul returns to the universe, but Wei Wuxian had only laughed and said it was none of their business who they chose to love.
The Wei Wuxian before him now only looks uncomfortable.
“I’m sorry,” he says. “A-Niang tells me I went through nirvana five hundred years ago and have only just woken up from the rebirthing sleep. I have no memories of my previous life.”
There is guilt in his eyes when he looks at Lan Wangji and his voice when he next speaks is kind, almost pitying. It stings more than incredulity.
“I don’t doubt we loved each other in my previous life,” he says. “But regardless of my feelings then, I do not wish to tie you to a marriage when my feelings are no longer what they once were.”
Lan Wangji feels the ground crumbling, piece by piece, around him as the words sink in; his legs buckle beneath him, sending him stumbling backward a step before he can catch himself. Still standing over the lake, Wei Wuxian’s body jerks forward as if to come to his aid. His fists flex repeatedly by his side but he does not move or speak further.
“You—” the words scrape his throat raw. “You don’t love me anymore?”
Wei Wuxian inhales sharply at the brittleness of his voice. His grey eyes are wide with shock and uncertainty as he stares at Lan Wangji; his lips part without a sound, the ghost of a tremor passing through them.
“I-I don’t—” he looks away quickly, lips pressed together in a thin line. “I’m sorry. I know you said we’re married—if you wish to divorce, I am willing to bear that responsibility—”
Lan Wangji gasps at the sudden, searing pain that erupts in his chest; he brings a hand up to press against it, feeling the way it races erratically beneath his hands, threatening to tear itself apart. Wei Wuxian turns back to him, horrified, reaching out to help, but Lan Wangji halts him with an outstretched hand.
“I-I’m sorry,” Wei Wuxian stammers again as he struggles to hold himself back. “Is there—are you alright?”
Lan Wangji takes several deep breaths, focusing his spirit inward to stabilise himself; the pain gradually subsides, leaving him weak and aching.
“Our marriage was decreed by both the Nine Heavens and the Phoenix Tribe,” he says heavily. “Everyone knows you are my husband, and I yours. A divorce would have lasting consequences for both realms. It is not so simple.”
“Oh,” Wei Wuxian says, gnawing on his bottom lip. “I guess—”
“If that is your wish, however,” Lan Wangji continues, staring at him with a hollow, wrung-out expression. “If that is truly your wish, I will do everything in my power to grant you your freedom.”
He straightens, clasps his fingers before him, and bows low at the waist. It is too formal a bow for a High God to give to an immortal half his age—he hears Wei Wuxian’s startled gasp, but pays it no mind. He is not bowing to just anyone. He is bowing to the man who sacrificed himself, the entirety of his existence, for him; the man who had done it all out of love for him. He is bowing to his husband, to whom he owes a debt too great to repay. The least he can do now is to set him free.
And then, before Wei Wuxian can recover from his shock to respond, he turns on his heel and leaves.
Lan Zhan, I’m giving you my heart, so you better take good care of it, alright?
If...if I survive this, if I am reborn again...A-Niang says I won’t remember anything about this life, so...this Wei Wuxian—the one who fell in love with you at first sight, the one who married you and willingly carved out his own heart to save you—this Wei Wuxian will die, and another one will take my place.
If you fall in love with him after I’m gone, I think I’ll be jealous. So please...promise me. Promise me that no matter how much you love him, you’ll save some of that love for me.
Goodbye, Lan Zhan. I love you.
I can totally explain a bit of my thinking behind seeing lwj as autistic and wwx as autistic/adhd!! Before I get into specifics though, let me preface with where I’m coming from. I first saw CQL and then read the EXR translation of the novel. I prefer MDZS to CQL, but also want to acknowledge that because I do not read/speak Mandarin I am inherently experiencing this story second-hand and therefore am probably missing out on a lot of nuances. I am trying to learn Mandarin, but it will be a long time before I am even a little close to fluent lol.
Another preface- obviously not all autistic people present in the same way, and many of the things that I will mention are not solely specific to autistic people either. It’s one of those things where all of it added up together points towards asd, but each one individually would not on its own indicate asd, you know? Also, I will say that many of the things I picked up on for both characters are autistic traits that many autistic people have vs the clinical characteristics (much like most of the case I could make for wwx’s adhd would be adhd traits he has rather than symptoms that would lead to a real-world diagnosis.) Edit: OH! I almost forgot to say, that also all of these traits I’m listing are from a western perspective, and I would LOVE to read more about how autism presents in different cultures and to see conversations between autistc Chinese people specifically, so as to see if these traits are specific to western autistic people or not, but again, I do not speak Mandarin or Cantonese or any other Chinese dialect, so that’s a little inaccessible for me atm.
Ok, SO, for both characters I would list: strong sense of justice, lack of care for society’s opinion (I feel like it could be argued that lwj does to a certain point, but imo he operates more from what he morally considers to be correct and from a place of familial duty vs catering to the opinion of society at large), and then more vaguely, they both seem to be “nerdy” (this doesnt feel like the most accurate term, especially because it's not like being scholarly is specific to their characters, especially in ancient fantasy China- it’s more that their particular hmmm, flavor?? of love of knowledge feels very neurodivergent to me, vs like, being scholarly because it’s the thing that is expected of a Young Master, if that makes any sense at all- like the difference btwn someone getting an engineering degree because it is expected of them vs because they genuinely love engineering), and lastly for both- I would say that they are canonically kinky, and while I can’t cite any statistics, there’s a pretty high correlation between being autistic and being into kink. Obviously, not every person who is not vanilla is autistic, and not every autistic person is into kink…….but there is a high correlation.
For lwj specifically, the things that made me think he might be autistic are his lack of outward emoting combined with his depth and breadth of emotions, how he seems to thrive in and quite enjoy the very structured environment he grew up in, and then the last one off the top of my head (side note, I feel like a week from now I’m going to randomly think of other examples lol) I’m not actually sure IS an example, because I know (thanks to the awesome post from hunxi that you linked to that I had read previously) that his succintness does not equal autism, but I do kind of feel like it is very autistic to Always be so formal and to Always talk in textbook perfect language.
For wwx, I also think he likely has CPTSD! I’m not going to list anything for adhd or cptsd since we both agree on those :) As far as being autistic goes, there is, of course, the high prevalence of adhd/asd comorbidity. For specifc traits- while autism can show up as lack of facial expressions/tone, it can also show up as being overly exuberant and overexpressive. Especially for younger autistic children this can show up as being overly friendly/no boundaries w/ strangers (just?? going home with a random man who says he knew wwx’s parents???), making unusual connections that others do not can be both asd and adhd, his disregard for social status (disregard might be a strong word, and also I feel like this might be one of those things that got lost in translation and if I had read the original text I might have a different opinon, but what I mean here is the way that often autistic people learn certain social rules and try their best to follow them, but often do not pick up on specifics related to social hierarchy that are not spelled out for them- I think jyl’s take down of jin zixun is a great example of the /oppossite/ of what I’m talking about, and is a very neurotypical interaction. An example also of what I mean by disregard for social hierarchy, but from my own life, is how I’ve reflected on past convos w/ my boss only to realize that what I thought was just an interesting conversation about our opinons on a particular subject was actually them trying to tell-me-as-my-boss something they wanted me to do. We ended up doing things the way I wanted to do them because I didn’t realize that they were telling me to do something because they didnt explicitly say so, and because I just don’t pick up on when people are saying something from a social hierarchy pov. Idk if this makes sense or not, so I’m happy to try to expand if you would like me to. I feel like wwx could be described as having alexithymia, which is very common in autistic people, but could also be due to his cptsd. And then, I don’t feel like this is a true point because it is kind of based on headcanon? but wwx feels very demisexual to me, which is much more common for autistic people than it is for allistic people. But him being demi is not canon, just my perception of him (I see him as demisexual gay w/ massive comphet, but I know lots of people see him as bi, which also totally makes sense!!)
Tbh, I’m having a harder time than I thought I would listing wwx specifics. I might go through the book sometime this weekend and see if there are specific moments that pop out at me, but tbh w/ him its more that he Feels very adhd/asd to me?? Idk, I was diagnosed w/ adhd when I was 8, and all 4 of my siblings plus my father have offical adhd diagnoses. I’m 29 now and was only diagnosed as autistic earlier this year.  All of my close friends have always been either adhd, asd, or adhd/asd. There have been multiple people I have met that I’ve suspected were neurodivergent who have later told me they started looking into it and are now seeking formal diagnoses. I mention these things, only to give full context when I say that I have spent a lot of time observing the differences between interacting with neurotypicals and neurodivergents. I mean, obviously, it’s possible that I could just be projecting, but to me, Wwx gives off late-diagnosed/heavy masker autism/adhd combo vibes. Again, maybe I am projecting, but I did try to analyze whether I was or not previously, and determined that since in the past with other favorite characters (who I probably share more similarities in personality with) I did not feel like they were neurodivergent, so I figured that probably I wasn’t? That feels like a very convoluted sentence, but what I mean is that I have not thought that about other characters who have been my fav, so I figured that while I do project in certain areas that this particular area probably wasn’t one of them. Or, to say it in yet another way, since i did not project any of my neurodivergencies on past favorite characters, I figured I probably didn’t start doing so now.
I would love to hear more of your perspective on this, particularly because I worry that I do not have the cultural touchstones to realize when something wwx or lwj is doing is not actually a sign of being neurodivergent. I try my best to research things I don’t know about and to listen to fans who actually do have that cultural understanding, but there’s only so much I can look into on my own when I only speak/read english. And also, I love mdzs and I love talking about both adhd and autism, so I’m glad to talk about these subjects with someone else who also likes all of those topics :) Sorry for sending a book of a response and also I hope you are having a great day!!
wow wow wow anon THANK YOU for doing your research and acknowledging your blind spots you seriously made my day. I wanted to get to this as soon as I made that rant while sharing cyan’s post bc this is specifically an example of a well researched proposition based on actual lived experience and critical thinking.
I almost want to ask you to come forward so we can take this convo elsewhere for a more nuanced discussion bc you’ve already hit upon an issue that’s been holding me back from making a big blathering masterpost on the matter - that the ND experience is so unique and individual, and no one person can dictate someone else’s experience. at the end of the day, if you personally relate to these characters and gain more understanding of yourself and your experiences from them, who am I to take that away from you?
in a public space though I have to make the discussion very broad in order to accurately contextualize these issues, bc in typical autistic fashion I feel morally compelled to Do My Best and Get It Right even as the masses show no inclination of returning the favor, so apologies for the boring backstories I have to get out of the way before we can approach anything resembling new ground.
first from a diagnostic standpoint, while I recognize the traits you listed (and appreciate your clearly nuanced understanding of ND expressions) and would find value in exploring them in a personal context, they are not unique to adhd and/or autism and wouldn’t constitute a basis for diagnosis in a clinical setting. I know that's probably beside the point for this anon, but there's enough edgy teens hoarding labels out there without tacit encouragement from scientists (yes I am technically a scientist, even though my ideologies these days range from conventional to... wildly esoteric, shall we say)
from a cultural standpoint, it’s important for me to emphasize that the concept of neurodivergence is a uniquely western notion. for those unfamiliar, the term 'neurodiversity' was only coined in 1998. I was born in 1991. I existed for a whole 7 years as an autistic person before the idea of being neurodivergent was even a thing. this ND acceptance thing is very, very new - people were not making tiktok confessionals about their adhd diagnosis journeys when I was growing up.
china, like most asian countries, is about 20 years or more behind on just about every social issue compared with western countries. to better illustrate, the experience of being ND in china falls much closer to the conventional experience of disability (i.e. being eugenicized out of existence) than the tentative ND acceptance movement that’s been kickstarted in the past 20 years in the anglosphere.
safe to say, there is no ND coding going on in chinese media. characters are either explicitly ND or they're not. there's no basis for a creator subtly inducing ND-like traits in a character, because there's no such thing as ND awareness in the cultural context of where mdzs was written and consumed. any resemblance is purely accidental, as they say.
as to how this resemblance could exist - I could go into the layers and layers of historical, cultural, social and religious context that make up these characters and the xianxia genre as a whole. for this anon in particular i'm happy to, because they've done the work. please please get in touch in some way where we can have a fully fleshed out chat if you're interested in taking this further, I realize i’ve basically addressed none of the finer points you’ve raised but honestly it’s another level of discussion to be had that cannot be summarized in one blog post haha.
as for those who would scream 'but special interests!!' at a character whose sect was founded by a literal monk - what would be the point?
PS. to comprise a starting point for why it's possible to see ND4ND everywhere in media if you looked hard enough - I refer you to the seminal red oni blue oni trope 💁‍♀️
Scrapbook 2021 | Part II
For anyone that’s new to this, this is how I keep track of all of the things I enjoy and/or create throughout the year. I have literally been doing this since I had a livejournal. I think the first one was 2011? Maybe? In which case, woohoo, ten years of scrapbooking!
It’s a nice little snippet of my life and helps to organize my brain.
A reminder:
Normal font - Indifferent/Neutral Italicized font - Enjoyed bold font - Loved with an asterisk* - All time favorite (bracketed titles) - Re-watches/Re-reads strikethough - Disliked
Goals are: read 80 books (as of today, i am at 31 books, which sounds not great but goodreads assures me that it’s only 1 book behind schedule), finish five video games (at two at the moment... mostly because I keep dragging my feet on actually finishing P5R), write more than 20 fics (at... 6) or something larger than 20k (negative), and write either an original short story or start a novel (i have started plotting for the novel? does that count?)
doot doot doot more potentially controversial wangxian marriage opinions
so the male marriages thing I shared is exactly the kind of worldbuilding fodder I enjoy, but it also I think reenforces why I don’t see WWX and LWJ using “marriage” as a primary template for how they think about their relationship - because marriage in their culture is in so many ways not a partnership between equals, and that’s such a central part of how they see each other - especially because LWJ does actually have a considerable amount of social power compared to where WWX is by the end of the story, but would never want their relationship conceived of along those power lines.
(And I’m not claiming the linked region-specific example is the only institutional iteration of homosexuality in the entirety of Chinese history - it’s not a topic I’ve really researched in-depth as much as I’d like to - but it is an example of how these extant cultural avenues of recognition are often based around certain power dynamics, and that the mere existence of those avenues does not inherently or necessarily denote “acceptance” of queer relationships that exist outside of them.)
(It’s also true that MDZS plays pretty fast and loose with historical accuracy and is, I would argue, more “idealized” (despite the in-universe homophobia) and more based in modern sensibilities in its potential for queer recognition. But I also find modern sensibilities rather boring and stifling as a set of norms to carry into every historical fantasy setting, so.)
Anyway, verbiage aside - my point is that marriage and the associated rites for WWX and LWJ denote exactly the kind of societal strictures that they want their relationship to stand outside of. Which is not to say they don’t borrow from it at all (and WWX loves using heterosexuality as a mold, for Gender Reasons), but it is something of a reclamation, and it’s an approximation - it is one of multiple potential archetypes that gets close to what they want to convey in their commitment to each other, but it is not the thing itself.
So I think they do go through some sort of ritual together to solidify that commitment, largely because LWJ values and feels grounded by ritual. But it’s something that’s private and only between them, rather than anything public or socially/institutionally recognized. (Really, I think that last part is true even in novel canon - the “marriage” is really just something they both decide counts on their own, and I’m not sure they actually tell anyone they consider themselves married. LQR begrudgingly recognizes WWX as some sort of member of the household by inviting him to the banquet, but I don’t (although I could be wrong) remember anyone else actually using a phrase like “your husband” to describe one of them. It’s just something they call each other.)
I also think they wouldn’t do such a ritual until a little ways into their relationship and after they’d actually lived and traveled together for awhile. I see a lot of people saying “LWJ waited long enough!” to explain them getting hitched immediately, but I’m not really comfortable with the implication that LWJ’s needs should take precedent over WWX’s, who can be kind of elided in that sort of statement. And you can certainly take the interpretation that WWX would be down to elope right away too! I think there’s evidence for that in the novel (I think someone pointed out on one of my posts that novel!WWX has more of a sense of urgency in general than CQL!WWX). But - well, I made a what turned out to be a rather popular post about how I prefer the CQL ending for WWX, and I think that just because LWJ is ready to jump into a serious longterm relationship right away doesn’t mean WWX is. At least in CQL, WWX didn’t plan on getting married as a teenager, and I don’t think he ever really considered the possibility until he was resurrected. It feels right to me that he would need time to adjust to and be ready for that.
i dont want to upset anyone but this has kinda been bugging me. i haven't been able to watch untamed yet so it could be everyone is gushing over lwj's acts of devotion for wwx, but wangxian kinda feels... onesided. im sure wwx loves lwc and the same back but all i keep seeing is what lwj does/sacrifices for wwx and then wwx just... doesn't reciprocate. it even sounds like wwx is kinda cold to lwj at times but then never makes amends?? im hoping you can talk about this or know of some meta post
Nah I don’t think it’s upsetting, it actually made me think a long time about their relationship which is never a hardship for me. Well since I’m very new and haven’t read the book or really any meta yet, I’m not as knowledgeable as others would be, but here’s my take on it.
Lan Zhan in love is a paradigm shift - his entire life he’s been solitary and he’s really never let anyone in. But though he’s been in love up until Wei Wuxian’s death, he has trouble bringing himself to forsake his duty and he doubts Wei Wuxian‘s ability to control himself and not go all dark side. It’s understandable because even Wei Wuxian doesn’t know if he’s in control by the time he dies. A lot of Lan Zhan’s acts of devotion happen after Wei Wuxian returns from death. He’s had sixteen years to come to terms with how much he really loves him and his purpose now is to make it up to Wei Wuxian, giving him everything he needs or desires and ruining his reputation because he’s making up for his doubt with his big acts of faith, so you can see the turmoil and all consuming love because this man is going through an emotional journey and when you have a character that shows little on his face, you can feel the gut punch more when you see a tear fall or his face wrench in agony as he watches Wei Wuxian fall into the abyss.
On the flip side, I can see on the surface where one would think Wei Wuxian doesn’t have the same devotion. He flirts and teases but he’s never serious about it, he’s constantly getting himself into trouble and thinks he can always get out of it with a clever trick, he’s inconsiderate of the people who care about him and take care of him, and...oh shit, I just sounded like every person who has ever met Wei Wuxian. Let’s face it, Wei Wuxian is well-loved by a lot of people, but the problem is that a lot of that is conditional or he gets stripped of those friends and family and everyone, everyone, even Lan Zhan are not or cannot be on his side when Wei Wuxian effectively throws himself off that cliff and I think him doing that to himself can be seen by some as Lan Zhan not being enough for him, but as someone with depression and been in that dark place, it’s never about how much you’re loved but how much you hate yourself and note that he asks Lan Zhan to let him go, because he incorrectly thinks he’s not worth another breath and he wants Lan Zhan to be free of him. Despite his big damn heart and his capricious attitude, deep down I think he believes everything negative he’s told about himself and puts on an air of not caring because he cares so. damn. much. That’s why he keeps the depth of his feelings hidden, because this boy feels too damn much and he is always ready for people to leave him and sometimes he starts walking away first.
Whenever I ship a pairing, my main tenant in shipping them is this: how do these characters treat each other differently than other characters? With Wei Wuxian, I think it’s when he goes quiet and isn’t putting on a show for everyone. And what do we see in those moments? I can give you a lot of examples, but I am only using the first episode because I think it summarizes my point entirely. For this episode and part of the next, he’s actively avoiding Lan Zhan like the plague, but why? To avoid weirdness? To keep being shady without being lectured? Nope, it’s seeing Wei Wuxian in the quiet moments that tells us why. The first time he thinks about Lan Zhan, he stares at Yuan’s robe and has a flashback to the first time he saw him. Just that has him staring as a thousand memories form on his face and he sinks to the ground quietly before eventually collecting himself and pretending again to be crazy Mo. Damn, that was quite different from how he’s been prancing around and presenting himself up until that point. Then not a minute later we see him playing their fucking song in a dark quiet room and he ends it with another flashback of that moment and a softly whispered, “Lan Zhan” When Lan Zhan does appear to fight with an epic Guqin slam,  Wei Wuxian is hiding but is looking at him like he’s about to cry. Wei Wuxian’s love is shown when he doesn’t have an audience, just his face whenever he’s tucking a drunk Wangji into bed or in the tortoise cave when he puts his cloak over him. You hear it when he’s in his own head and he’s worried for Lan Zhan. When he saves part of the medicine Wen Ning gives him for Lan Zhan’s broken leg and doesn’t heal his own wounds. When he asks Lan Zhan to lie and let everyone think Wei Wuxian tricked him so he’s keep his good reputation. They’re subtle, but that’s what makes it a perfect complement to Lan Zhan and how they act differently with each other. Lan Zhan is a serious, stoic, and subtle man, so for him to do such blatant things is his way of expressing love. Wei Wuxian is a fun-loving, carefree and outspoken man, so when he’s being subtle or is taking something seriously, that’s his version of love.
In summation this is why I love the ending, because you think Wei Wuxian’s fears of everyone leaving him are real because Lan Zhan does leave, is literally walking in an opposite direction, but when Lan Zhan comes back? That fucking smile, that right there is all the proof I need of how in love and devoted Wei Wuxian is, because the absolute relief and joy on that face? This subtle and quiet moment? This gif alone is how I know Wei Wuxian loves Lan Zhan with all his battered and bruised heart.
MDZS AU Headcanon dump: Stay (8)
(Part 1 here)  (Part 2 here)  (Part 3 here)  (Part 4 here)  (Part 5 here)  (Part 6 here)  (Part 7 here)
“Ze Wu Jun.What are you talking about-”
“Wei Wuxian, this I’m afraid would be a family matter.I would like to ask you to kindly leave.” LQR is not having any of it and JC knows his brother, quickly holds him back, eyes urging him to stand down. LWJ knelt before his elders.
“Wei Ying...Its fine.” This was coming anyway.
WWX being WWX he breaks away from JC, telling him to close the doors behind him. JC breathes heavily and rolls his eyes, he chooses to not deal with WWX’s whims now for his own sake and does as asked.
Amongst the crowd of white robed cultivators, the Grandmaster’s inky garbs stands out in stark contrast. Before he makes his way and kneels together with LWJ.
(Its almost a bastardised ceremony of acceptance but thats getting ahead of themselves.)
”Since I’m Lan Zhan’s partner, and I’m the reason why he is to be punished then all the more I must stay no?”
”YOU-”
”Uncle, calm down please.”
”THIS-!” Some younger disciples quickly tries to calm LQR down, who is on the verge of choking on his own blood ( “Cangse Sanren you and yours-!” ) LXC taking this moment to proceed.
”Wangji.”
”...”
“Your punishment has been decided.You have a choice.”
“Seclusion within the caves in the depths of Cloud Recesses.In solitary isolation for 3 years.”
“Or we will strip part of your cultivation and be banished from the Lan Sect.”
Neither were ideal options. GusuLan has never killed unless in the worst scenarios.Like during the Sunshot Campaign.As a peace seeking clan, they seek enlightenment, and reform the mind, the body, the soul.But the caves...they are Spirit caves where they hone their cultivation. However, when one stay in the labyrinth long enough, they forget worldly desires. Their attachments.Their feelings. Themselves. As the immortals do. He knows what the caves can do...Afterall, it was where he spent as a child after his mother’s death. It is why he can barely remember her now, if not for his brother and back then he was too young to decide against the elders who no longer remained once his brother has taken leadership.
LWJ knows that they know.
They have given him an ultimatum. Have your way and lose your home, your status.Or come home, and re-cultivate yourself as a Lan. If 3 years your heart remains, they will not anything either after that.They can’t.
LWJ is ready to choose when WWX stops him. LWJ has given up much in staying beside him, he won’t let him sacrifice more for his sake. They are LWJ’s only family and WWX knows how important that is.
But you are important too.
“3 years Lan Zhan.Besides I have to deal with the Burial Mounds and the Stygian Tiger Seal during this time.By the time you are out, my obligations would also be finished.It’s not as if we’ll be apart 13 years right?” (hahahahhahahaha please dont hurt me)
“The process is dangerous, all the more I need to s-”
“Lan Zhan,trust me.”
Just as I trust you.
The following days, preparations were made. The Wens will be under surveillance, moving down into Yiling now they no longer need to stay in the mountains. WWX will move to Lotus Pier so the 3 sects can work with him better ( read: control ). LWJ will follow the Lans back to Gusu with a-Yuan. They told him he was going to board with a respected sect, he can learn and become like his Zhan gege. He will change his surname from Wen to Lan only because of his unique status as a ward of the Lan clan.LXC makes a promise to let them reunite on Lunar New Year.The only kindness he can give to the Wens.
WWX and LWJ were kept busy themselves, both with their new obligations, and the only time that have alone were the nights after.( “Lan Zhan, how long do you plan to not tell me?””?””About you and Wen Qing plotting behind my back.Feeding me all those horrible, disgusting medicine and meditation with you?””....You knew?””Its my body.I told you I know what is going on with it when I started demonic cultivation.So?So?Was it long?””...””Ahhh look at you Lan Zhan.Do I have to feed you wine to get the truth out of you again?””What?””Ah.Nothing.Nothing.Ahhhh-Lan er gege Wha-Noooo! Forgive Xian Xian!I’m sorry!””Asking for it.””But honestly Lan Zhan now that I can start cultivating again...should we try double cultivating?As cultivation partners?””Shameless.””Ahhh I knew you would say that-Wait.Lan Er gege what are you doing?Why are you peeling my robes-!””Double cultivation.””I DIDN’T SAY NOW!AH!” )
The morning before the departure from the Burial Mounds, they had a ceremony for a-Yuan at their home for the last time, where he thanks his family and his grandmother for their care before he leaves for another.WWX laughs to himself, watching the tiny child struggling in the stiff new robes.Almost bittersweet as he thinks about the child’s fate and purpose. At the end, a-Yuan instead, waddles over and pulls WWX and LWJ to the seats, face in a huffy determination only a way a child could have.
”A-Yuan wants to thank Xian gege and Zhan gege too.”
A tea, and a bow.
”Thank you for your care and love for a-Yuan.”
If WWX has cried, nobody makes mention of it.Even as he held the tiny boy, the innocence he had chosen to protect against the world.
It was worth it.
As the Sects leave Yiling, WWX following the Jiangs back to Lotus Pier and LWJ to Gusu, the pair stood beside each other, steps heavy in their wake.Finally, as they could not let the couple delay their plans further, a cough here and a nudge there.Its goddamn time.
WWX makes the first step, throwing his arms around LWJ. Poise and image be damned.Let them look.They were already talking at Koi Tower anyway.LWJ thinks as he returns the embrace, hoping to remember this man before the long years they have to spend apart.He feels WWX’s warmth, his breath at his neck before the demonic cultivator leans nearer to his ear, whispering words that he never dreamed he would hear.
“This time, I’ll come find you. I’ll come to Gusu.”
And WWX reaches up, tugs his forehead ribbon off,wrapping it around his wrist, giving LWJ a smirk before sauntering off to a stoned JC and a smug Wen family.
(Somewhere behind, LXC is smiling widely before scrambling to assist LQR who is resembling one experiencing a qi deviation.JC has a jaw on the ground, thoughts escaping him.The Wens are glad and relieved, because goddman it finally.If you had to live with the 2 you would be too.)
“I’ll be taking this Hanguang Jun! You can have it back in 3 years!”
“Mn.”
As they share one last parting glance, they turn away with much difficulty, parting after a long while.
LWJ has waited this long.He can endure this.
Just 3 years.
-----
On the way to Lotus Pier-
“Why...do I feel like I’m missing something here.”
“Ahhh a single dog won’t get it.”
“I dare you say it again you ass.”
“Single dog.”
“Hahaha.Let’s go Jiang Cheng.I’m a guest of Lotus Pier now, aren’t I? Have your disciples carry my things properly now. And I want to drink Shijie’s soup.”
“You and your shamelessness.Which part of guest do you not understand?!”
Note
If we look at the fact that JC and other people constantly told WWX that LWJ hated him from the moment WSX stepped into TCR it's also understandable that he didn't understand the true nature and depth of LWJ's feelings for him. I can't think of the line right now since I'm on mobile and can't pull it up but JC even says I think on the first day there that LWJ hates WWX and thinks he's evil just the same as LQR does. WWX trusts JC so its understandable that he trusts this judgment
I think we should not overstate the influence of having someone like JC suggest to WWX that LWJ hates him. WWX is used to JC being overly negative and exaggerating how ‘irritating’ he can be. I’m sure at this point in the narrative that he trusts JC, but I’m not sure he trusts his judgement that much wrt these sorts of matters. It’s not like JC is particularly skilled at interpersonal relationships and at understanding other people’s feelings. In the Lotus seed pod Extra, WWX doesn’t seem bothered at all even after JC says that LWJ doesn’t like him, as shown by the following exchange:
Jiang Yanli sat down between the two. “Who are you talking about? A friend you made in Gusu?”
“Yeah!” replied Wei Wuxian happily.
“What a shameless ‘friend’ you are,” said Jiang Cheng. “Go ask Lan Wangji and see if he wants you as one.”
“Fuck off. If he doesn’t want me, I’ll bother him to the point that he does.”
[...]
“Then you can take him here,” suggested Jiang Yanli. “This is a good opportunity. Why not invite your friend to come stay at Lotus Pier for sometime?”
“Don’t listen to his nonsense, jie,” said Jiang Cheng. “He was super annoying while we were in Gusu. Lan Wangji would never want to come home with him.”
“What do you mean!? He would.”
“Wake up. Lan Wangji told you to get lost, didn’t you hear? You still remember that?”
“What do you know!? Even though he told me to get lost on the surface, I know for sure that he secretly wants to come play with me in Yunmeng—in fact, he would love to.
This is supported by the exchanges between WWX and LWJ during their stay in the Xuanwu cave. WWX also suggests that he’s used to people acting like he’s annoying but not really hating him.
Suddenly, Lan Wangji shoved him hard, raging. “So you also know that she will not be able to forget you for the rest of her life!”
Collapsed on the ground, [WWX] broke into a cold sweat from the pain, moaning with his neck stretched forward. “… Lan Zhan, you… Have I done something to you?! … This would be enough revenge to pay for killing your father!”
Hearing this, Lan Wangji clenched his fists.
A moment later, he relaxed, seeming as if he wanted to help Wei Wuxian up. However, Wei Wuxian sat up on his own and shrunk backward a couple of times. “Fine, fine! I know you don’t like me. Then I’ll sit farther away. Don’t come here! Don’t push me again. It’s so painful.”
[...]
Curled up in the corner, [WWX] continued to poke at the flames, not at all comprehending the situation, How could Lan Zhan do this? Even though he saved me, you can say that I saved him as well, didn’t I? It’s not that I want him to thank me or anything, but why is it that we still can’t be friends, even after so much has happened? Don’t tell me that… that I’m really as annoying as Jiang Cheng makes it to be?!
Just as he was doubting himself, Lan Wangji spoke up.
“Thanks.”
Wei Wuxian thought that he heard wrong. He looked at Lan Wangji, who was also looking at him. In all seriousness, he repeated himself once more.
[...]
Seeing that he began to frown, Wei Wuxian replied. “I’m not fooling around. You’re the one who should stop fooling around. I refuse to accept this. Lan Zhan, tell me, why?”
Lan Wangji, “What why?”
Wei Wuxian managed to flip around and lay stomach down on the ground.
“Of all the other people, there isn’t anyone who doesn’t secretly like me despite saying that I’m annoying. Why is it that, whenever it’s you, you never give me any good looks? We count as having lived through death with each other, don’t we? You don’t even want to lend your lap for me to lie on and you’re lecturing me again. Are you an old man or what?”
Lan Wangji replied with a thin voice, “You are delirious.”
Perhaps he was indeed delirious.
So, for me, I think WWX really started to believe that LWJ did not like him much in the Xuanwu cave, but became really convinced during the Sunshot campaign when LWJ kept trying to discourage him to use modao, also a time when the idea that LWJ ‘hated’ him because ‘public knowledge’. Even if JC had continued to remind WWX that LWJ hated him, it would not have been enough to convince him on its own.
