He made me a better ad guy.
March 20, 2023
I have lost another close friend. Dave Patton became my trusted sidekick during the early going of the 25 or so years we worked together as creative team partners, mostly at Ross Roy. It was there that co-workers would refer to "Len and Dave" during staff meetings as easily as they might say "bacon and eggs" at breakfast time. When the two of us worked together on something--whether a simple postcard or a full-blown campaign--well, usually it just plain worked. Were it not for Dave, there's no way that this writer's career would have gone as well as it did. Dave turned my jokes into arresting headlines. He gave the stuff I wrote a "look." The truth is, he was the better idea guy, the better concept guy, the truly creative guy on a team of two buds who worked mostly on cars and enjoyed a helluva ride. I collaborated with his family on the following obituary:
Dave Patton August 29, 1944 to March 7, 2023
Dave Patton loved lines.
He loved the swoopy lines of fat-fendered street rods, the sleek lines of vintage Corvettes. He loved the fine lines of Native American turquoise jewelry. And, oh, how he loved to draw the lines that go into the creation of a successful print ad, direct mail piece or digital communication.
The world lost the consummate advertising design professional—as well as husband, brother, father and grandfather—when Dave Patton, 78, died on March 7, 2023, due to complications from Parkinson’s Disease and Covid in Portage, Michigan.
Dave was a kind and generous soul with a wry wit and sarcastic sense of humor. He loved music and would break into his signature dance moves every time he heard a good song. His love of early rock ‘n' roll, Motown music and patented steps led to an appearance on Club 1270, a dance program for teenagers on WXYZ TV during the early ‘60s.
Dave was born in Detroit on August 29, 1944, to James ("Bud") and Bonney (Babcock) Patton. The young, rambunctious Dave Patton, a kid with a short attention span, was always drawing in class. He won the Senior Award for “Best Artist" at Birmingham Seaholm High School.
As an adolescent, Dave was a fleet-footed running back for Pierce Junior High in Birmingham, which evolved into a lifelong, fanatical love affair with University of Michigan football. He was also a big fan of the Detroit Red Wings and Detroit Tigers. After graduating from Seaholm High in 1963, he enlisted in the Navy and traveled the world aboard the S.S. Garcia. After he returned home from the Navy, he enrolled at the School of the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts, which would become the Center for Creative Studies.      Dave met his sweetheart, Diane Morrison, at age 16. They wed shortly after his return from the service in 1967 and were married for 56 years. As a devoted father he coached Little League, faithfully attended his children's ice skating and dance lessons, drove the family minivan around the Midwest and Canada for his son’s hockey games, and passed his design genes onto both of his children who create jewelry, hand-blown glass and other forms of art.
Fine art--paintings, photography, sculptures, metal and ceramic works--were often at the center of the Patton family’s life. Artistic discoveries during travels to New York, Taos, Naples, Fairbanks, Rome and other faraway places resulted in a collection that set the Patton home apart.      Dave's career as an advertising designer and art director began at Meldrum & Fewsmith in Detroit. He then moved to Ross Roy, Michigan’s largest independent advertising agency at the time, where he began working on such accounts as Kmart, Kelsey-Hayes and Federal Mogul. When he started working on the Chrysler account, Dave designed the likes of giant foam-board spark plugs that hung from showroom ceilings and “dimensional mail packages”--communications in tubes and boxes--that dared customers not to open them.      During the early ‘90s he was named co-creative director for automotive direct marketing at Ross Roy, helping to manage a team of writers and art directors who produced all of Chrysler’s owner communications, including four-color magazines, newsletters and direct mail packages that no one in their right mind would describe as “junk mail.”      However, his proudest achievement came during the year he worked on the Gulfstream Aerospace account and designed a nine-part mail program to sell the Gulfstream IV, a $25 million business jet, to the 2,000 known prospects for it in the world. The sale of seven airplanes were attributed to the program. It garnered for Dave and the team who worked on it, a Gold Echo award from the Direct Marketing Association of America.      As his career wound down, Dave worked on Ford at J. Walter Thompson and Mazda at W.B. Doner. A 40-year career in advertising ended with eight years as co-owner of his own “shop,” Bulldog ’n’ Buck Communications. In retirement, Dave expressed his artistic talents by exploring photography, making ceramics and creating illustrations with colored pencils. He and Diane loved to attend art fairs, sparking Dave's interest in creating unique, colorful, abstract pieces of lacquered acrylics on wood--made to look like framed ceramic tiles--which he and Diane sold at art fairs while traveling around Michigan.      Dave is survived by his wife, Diane; children Michael (Katie) and Marci Frederickson (Roy); three grandchildren—Brett, Megan and Ziggy Moon; and sister Linda Patton (Arnold). His family and close friends will remember Dave as the creative, strong, supportive rock of the family who never turned down a dessert in his life. Those who worked with him will remember Dave Patton for his extraordinary design talent and the fact that he didn’t suffer fools.
A Celebration of Life is being planned for friends and family on August 9, 2023, at Wind + James, 555 E. Eliza St., Schoolcraft, MI 49087. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Michigan Parkinson's Foundation (parkinsonsmi.org (http://parkinsonsmi.org/)

Funk Blog
Blog 1
The artist that I choose is Childish Gambino and his third studio album “Awaken, My Love!” The album was released by Glassnote Records on December 2, 2016. The album consisted of tracks with its fusion of psychedelic soul, funk, and R&B influences which gave a different style of music that Childish Gambino produces: rap music. The rapper Childish Gambino was influenced by the 70s Funkadelic style including the similar album cover from Maggot Brain by the Funkadelic. Glover said in an interview that he heard songs that his father would play which were Isleys or Funkadelic which fascinated him as a musician. The album cover shows the model Giannina Oteto wearing a beaded headdress designed by WXYZ Jewelry. The rising choruses of “Me and your mama”, the swinging funk beat of “Have Some Love”, and the groovy guitar riffs were similar to funkadelic. Two of the songs that were symbolic of the funk was called “Redbone” and “Me and Your Mama”. Redbone featured synth and bass beat with a sample from funk classic “I’d rather be with you” by Boosty’s Rubber Band that held the funk throughout the song while Glover vocals would reverberate. The second song “Me and Your Mama” starts with slowly twinkling hip hop then dives into aggressive, crunchy, thick funk-rock with choruses, guitars, reverberating drums and closing into a trippy ending. In conclusion in this album funkadelic’s music style is present on this record as an evolution of a new twist of funk.

Michigan Jeweler Buries $1 Million Worth Of Gold And Jewels For Real-Life Treasure Hunt
Tumblr media
It’s an opportunity of a lifetime for all the wannabe Indiana Joneses out there! googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1534891688457-0'); }); Have you ever wondered what it would be like to find an actual buried treasure? Just like those that the pirates in Hollywood swashbuckling blockbusters bury all over the place? Thanks to a jeweler from Michigan, you now have a chance to do just that. And out of all things, you can thank the coronavirus pandemic for the opportunity. The treasure hunt is organized by Johnny Perri from Washington Township, MI. For the past 23 years, he has been working as a jeweler at J&M Jewelers, a business founded by his father. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 lockdown took its toll on the shop’s finances and Perri was forced to turn off the lights for good. The treasure hunt is a creative way for him to liquidate the surplus inventory from his store. Together with his wife Amy, Perri has buried most of the store’s leftovers all over Michigan. Each treasure cache – containing vintage jewelry, coins, gold and silver – is worth around $4,000. In total, Perri has stashed away roughly $1 million worth of real deal treasures, according to WXYZ Detroit. That’s certainly a memorable farewell to the business his father started. And it’s all up for grabs. Johnny’s Treasure Quest kicks off on August 1, and anyone with a valid ticket can participate. Read the full article

by: Nexstar Media Wire

WASHINGTON MUNICIPALITY, Mich.– A Michigan fashion jewelry shop forced to close due to the coronavirus pandemic is bidding a remarkable farewell.
Johnny and Amy Perri, owners of J & M Jewelers in Washington Township, have actually buried roughly $1 million in precious jewelry– most of the store’s stock– for a statewide treasure hunt, reported WXYZ
The owners say they have actually buried the jewelry all over Michigan, from Detroit to the Upper Peninsula. The booty includes genuine engagement rings, precious coins, gold and silver.
” We had the time of our life burying whatever. It was remarkable, guy,” Johnny Perri informed WXYZ.
A $49 ticket spends for a chance to participate in the witch hunt, called Johnny’s Adventure Quest. It starts Aug. 1.
Each treasure is valued at around $4000 and is fitted with a GPS tracker, the Perris stated.
Once found, you can keep the treasure or offer it back to the owners.
Johnny Perri, who matured in his father’s precious jewelry shop, said the witch hunt is a fitting farewell to the household shop.
” Memories. Life is made from memories which was our slogan here all these years,” he stated.
Some of the treasure is 150 years of ages– passed down from his papa.
” He would believe I’m nuts,” Johnny Perri informed WXYZ.

The Traveler’s Conundrum: Unpack or Not Unpack?
For frequent travelers, it’s a constant consideration: Is it worth unpacking your suitcase while on the road, only to pack it up again? Or maybe it’s not a question that’s considered, but a deeply ingrained habit akin to always checking a bag, or preferring the window over the aisle seat or setting aside certain outfits for certain travel days.
I started thinking about unpacking this fall, in the middle of a two-month trip through Turkey and Georgia. A dedicated live-out-of-my-suitcase traveler, I found myself anticipating, no, craving, the moment when I’d arrive in Tbilisi, where my husband and I would be staying for a couple of weeks. I couldn’t wait to unpack. (My husband, meanwhile, stuck to his tradition and happily kept his clothes in the suitcase and neighboring piles on the floor.)
“Unpacking, literally, is a way for people to get control of their surroundings,” said Dr. Jean Kim, a psychiatrist and a professor at George Washington University who has written on travel and mental health. “When you’re traveling, the suitcase is a piece of you — it’s your life going along with you.”
A highly informal poll conducted in my social networks revealed that not only do people take very different approaches to unpacking, but they feel very strongly about their choices.
“Clear eyes, full heart, never unpack,” said the Los Angeles-based food and travel writer Jesse Friedman.
“Last year, on the advice of my mom (of course), I started immediately unpacking everything,” said Melissa Blaustein, the founder of Allied For Startups, a start-up policy association, who often visits two or three countries in as few as five days. “It’s made my hotels feel more like home and travel easier.”
Regardless of whether unpacking practices are instinctive or carefully considered, is there a way to approach it when on the road — particularly for extended stints — that’s better or worse? I talked to some experts to answer this conundrum.
Everything in its place
Wherever you land on the unpacking spectrum, packing thoughtfully makes for an easier, more streamlined travel experience. Dan Pierson, founder of Bolt Travel, a membership-based travel company, focuses on organization and consolidation.
“All of my clothing lives in a dry bag where it’s rolled up, military style, to prevent wrinkling. I’m able to drop that bag in and out of my backpack,” he said. “Each item, like chargers and toiletries, have their own home within my backpack. That helps me keep track of everything.”
This preference for easy, semi-unpacking — removing a bag of items that live in your suitcase — lends itself well to those increasingly popular packing cubes, lightweight organizers often sold in sets with different sized cubes to fit into your suitcase (friends and acquaintances of mine have described them glowingly as “life changing”).
“I always refer to them as portable drawers,” said Indré Rockefeller, co-founder and co-chief executive of the luggage company Paravel, which sells sets of nylon packing cubes made from recycled water bottles. “Instead of needing to do that dreadful luggage dump, you can take the packing cubes out and put them in the drawers where you’re staying, or fully unpack them for longer stays.”
A portable closet
If the transfer from bag to dresser drawers is a step too many, making the suitcase an organized space in and of itself can be a valuable hack. Laura Wass, founder and designer of Brooklyn-based jewelry brand WXYZ, found herself seeking a suitcase with its own built-in shelves.
“I wanted something like an old-school Louis Vuitton trunk, one you can open up and have your wardrobe right there,” she said.
She found a “very good, if not perfect” solution in the form of “The Carry-On Closet” from sustainable luggage company Solgaard — the carry-on-size suitcase has built-in shelving that can be compressed for transit, extended while stopped or removed entirely if not needed.
Ms. Wass, who has been on the road since May and also writes a blog called Passportability, has become, “kind of obsessed with creating the perfect travel tool kit. It makes so much sense to streamline, even if you’re unpacking while traveling,” she said. “It gives you the flexibility to feel like you’re at home.”
At home on the road
This feeling of “home” might be the deciding factor in whether unpacking, or not, is be the right solution for you.
“It’s almost a kind of territorial marking,” Dr. Kim said. “What you want to look out for is anything that increases anxiety — feeling compulsive about unpacking, or beating yourself up for not following a certain set of rules.”
Allowing for a degree of flexibility and experimentation can help with that.
“With travel, there’s novelty built into it. It’s the perfect time to test and try different things, within reason,” she said. (Dr. Kim personally tends not to unpack, wanting to avoid the possibility of leaving things behind.)
Me? I’ve come to terms with the great peace and satisfaction I now find in fully unpacking — but only if I’m in the same place for more than three nights.
And there is, it seems, no wrong answer.
“In the scheme of things, whether you unpack or not, it’s not the end of the world,” said Dr. Kim.
