WIP Wednesday Game

I am not seeing a new one this week, so I'm copying the rules from kedreeva. :)

It’s WIP Wednesday, time for a little accountability, sharing your work, and getting a kick in the pants.

Here’s how it works:

In a reblog of this post (so people can find you in the notes) or new thread (w/ rules attached) if you want to play on your own, post up to five (5) filenames of your WIPs; not titles, file names.

Post a snippet from one of them. Snippet must be words you wrote in the last 7 days. We’re posting progress here. If you haven’t made any, go make some and come back to play!

After you’ve posted, people can send you an ask with one of your file names. You must then write 3 sentences in that file. If the filename is one you can't share from (for example, an event or gift fic), write 3 sentences on it anyway, and then 3 more on another to share.

Happy anniversary, Æthnen!

Two years ago, today, I made this beautiful fern for my Trahearne lives AU and I've never looked back!

More pics and some lore and creation details under the cut.

The choice of face preset has been a real pain in the arse (Trahearne's facial features in creation mode when, Arenanet?!) and took a good long time staring at my Total Makeover Kits, but I'm quite happy with the result.

The loss of the dark thicker leaves framing his face to Mordremoth's corruption left furrows in their stead, and his once violet glow has turned golden due to the fusion with the dragon.

He lost his left arm to the dragon's possession and ultimate attempt on the Commander's life and arbours a complex prosthetic, a combination of asura and exalted technology fuelled and activated by his hard-earned control on the draconic magic that remained after Mordremoth's defeat.

Nightmares and draconic magic were not the only reminders he keeps from his possession - as the Dragon's unwilling Champion and Vessel, he retained some hold onto the Mordremoth's domain, and if the fact that flowers endemic to Caledon seemed to grow wherever he went was easy to ignore, the entanglements and coils of vines that armoured his necromantic minions called for some reconciliation with the darkest hours of his existence.

He also develops a strong bond with Aurene/ First, a connection through the energy he was once the vessel of, filtered and diffracted through a prism to allowed the Egg to hatch.

And an evergrowing attachment for the little dragon he and Anwen consider as their daughter.

He rarely - if ever - returns to The Grove after Maguuma.

It never felt like home to him, his heart turned towards the shores of Orr long before he left to complete his wyld-hunt, and the divide between him and his kin too deep already when the darkness shrouding him called to the deep ingrained fear of the dragon of shadow and death... irreconcilable now that his mere presence called the memory of the shadow of a dead dragon within them all.

To conclude... I really need to get back to writing for this verse as most of the development has happened in conversations between @lilypixy and I, in my head or via answers to asks, so... if I have as much time on my hands as I expect this week I'll try and actually finish one or two of these WIPs!

UNICORN - What makes your WIP and your writing stand out?

Ooh, these always throw me.

Um, well, Pale Blood's cyberpunk with monsters thing isn't really new (I mean it's basically Shadowrun, isn't it) but I think the world itself might be? Morne is a misshapen ball of a planet held in the claws of a gigantic wyrm. Som, said wyrm, holds the sun in his belly and lights the world with it by way of opening and closing his eyes. So...that stands out, maybe?

For the writing itself, you got me. I mean I'm not trying. I'm told it's poetic in places, lyrical even, which is always the best compliment. I am hopeful only that it is fun to read and recognizably mine when it needs to be.

MAGIC - What is your magic system?

This one is fun! It doesn't come up too often in Pale Blood, in the rough draft anyhow, but it will as I revise things.

Witches are the only ones with what we would consider 'magic', and they obtain it by being born to one who is already a witch. Their bloodline traces them back to a Goddess (of which there are three; Mother Night, Daughter Dusk and Sister Twilight) and that determines the 'type' of magic they have access to--and the rites and rituals required to use it on a grander scale, or strengthen it.

However! All of the magic is interpersonal. It is rare that they can use their magic on something inanimate (one would assume the net/internet inanimate but this is incorrect and important to be aware of). It is 'cast' via establishing a connection of some sort to the one they're using it on, but once a connection is made it takes genuine effort (or a dead witch) to sever. It can be skin to skin, emotion to emotion, thought to thought, even voice to voice if she's powerful enough (they are always she's, even if Mother Night has to twist some organs around to make the she in question's body match in order to get her witch).

Each Goddess rules her own domain and her witches have access to those domains, and can use them to manipulate the world around them. Once the connections is established, they have carte-blanche, basically, to do with it what they will (and what their own bodies, minds, spirits, can handle).

Mother Night’s witches, known as Children of Night, have perception and alteration. // they are the most mysterious, and calmest of the three, sullen perhaps, but terribly difficult to rile...and fearsome when they are.

Daughter Dusk's witches, known as Sisters of Dusk, have suggestion and divination. (one of the MCs is a Sister of Dusk) // they are largely tech-based witches, responsible not only for the net and the netlinks that allow everyone access to it but the barrier that separates the Wylds from the city

Sister Twilight’s witches, known as Daughters of Twilight, have manipulation and dominion. // the city as a whole is run by Twilight's Daughters, whether anyone knows it or not, as every seedy bar and brothel in the slums and high-class hotel and escort service up in the gilded towers of Upper Dolor is run by a Daughter...they've got their hot little hands in everyone's pants

1. mc pf breakup [past/'it's complicated' Prongsfoot, Moonchaser endgame]

Modern, non-magic AU where James and Sirius were best friends and childhood sweethearts until Sirius' music career took off, at which point he breaks up with James while on tour. James is devastated, Remus is there for him, and James realizes that maybe the relationship he thought he'd have wasn't the one he was meant to keep. Of course, their burgeoning romance is complicated by Sirius' return; I posted a snippet here, for those interested.

2. pf peter pan [Prongsfoot, possible hints of non-endgame Jily]

Peter Pan-based AU where a young and miserable Sirius runs away from home and is rescued by James, who whisks him away to Neverland, an enchanted isle where you can grow older, but you can never grow up. "Adult" feelings like romance make you grow up (that is, age past your teens), and Sirius eventually finds himself struggling not to develop feelings for James because he doesn't wanted to be separated from him.

3. pf rted [Prongsfoot? Jily? Prongsfoot + Jily? Jilypad?]

Very loosely inspired by Dreamworks' The Road to El Dorado, this is a fantasy-adventure AU where James and Sirius are partners-in-crime and best-friends-with-benefits who hit on a potentially huge score; Lily, looking to escape her current circumstances, happens to possess Vital Information and inserts herself into the party in exchange for her help. James and Lily flirt and maybe start to fall for each other, and while Sirius is fine with James' having other flings, there's something different about this one and Sirius is Not A Fan. Final ship is up in the air, as you can see.

04. pf wyld hunt [Prongsfoot]

A Prongsfoot Bingo Entry (Fairytale AU), James is the lonely son of the local lord, befriended in childhood by a black puppy that wanders out of the woods. The puppy becomes his constant companion, excepting its regular disappearances, until the day it doesn't return. As a young man, James glimpses a black dog through the trees, ventures into the forest and is captured by the fae: If he can survive three nights of pursuit in the form of stag, he'll earn his freedom. Sirius is the Fae Prince who befriended James in the form of a dog, and who was cursed to remain a hound when he came to care for James and refused to lure him into the woods to be hunted.

05. rg 01 [Prongsfoot, one-sided Jegulus]

A Regency Romance starring James as a young Earl seeking a good match, arriving at his host's country estate to woo Lady Regina Black before becoming entangled with her older brother, Lord Sirius Black, notorious rake and the future Marquess. Sirius is back from the Continent only because he can't afford to jeopardize his inheritance more than he already has, but he's caught off-guard when his attraction to James Potter proves his first experience with something more than lust. There's a snippet feat. fem!Regulus here.

Future Scenes

mc pf breakup - Sirius tries to rekindle, James finds the embers aren't completely out, and they either have sex and Remus later finds out by walking in the next morning or they're about to have sex/in flagrante delicto when Remus walks in. Yes, he has the key to James' flat. Yes, this is purely self-indulgent drama. <3

pf peter pan - The arrival of Lily and Sirius' jealousy, paired with the angst over James possibly falling for Lily and thus 'growing up' for someone else. (Don't worry, non-Jily fans, this is just Sirius' worst-case scenario.)

pf rted - James and Sirius in bed at some inn, a cuddly/sweet/playful morning after that establishes their relationship, which is clearly more than the casual FWB they claim it is, before their new adventure gets underway.

pf wyld hunt - The night before the third hunt, where James manages to sneakily accomplish the tasks that Sirius gave him and Sirius is able to visit him in human/fae form, allowing them to spend the night together before the uncertainty of the day to come.

rg 01 - Sirius, under pretext of inviting James to see the rare flora in the estate's greenhouse, has an assignation with the young earl in the humid, perfumed air. <3 (Or, Sirius expects PWP but gets porn with feelings.)

A scrapped idea of a current wip?

Spoilers below the cut for All is Bliss (In the Court of Aemma the Great)

So i intended to have Jena Wylde kill Alys to prevent her from having any power over Aemma like she did with Alicent (and because Alicent had Alys use her magic to kill Rhaenyra)and since Alys was using her magic to keep Aenys alive, Aemma was supposed to end her coronation to find her baby son dead.

My readers protested and so Aenys with the brown hair who believes Aegon was really his father will die conquering Dorne.

But honestly i wanted to have Aemma grapple with the guilt that she didn't feel any motherly feelings towards a child she was forced into having and losing her greatest ally and unlikely friend because Jena was indirectly responsible for her son's death.

Funniest part about my Boston chronicle wip stuff is that the Bone Gnawer sept is open to everyone (sure, glass walkers and silver fangs are discouraged but they'll still let your ass in) and is Literally a Wyld caern, in Dorchester. Its the Wyld carved out of the Weaver, laid bare and cultivated for generations. There's a non-trivial amount of Older Brother garou there. Its mostly Bone Gnawers, but there's a Black Fury, 2 Older Brother, 1 red talon, and even 1 Fianna. Those who normally would not be there ARE there because they recognize the nature of the Wyld sept and its importance.

Then the sept in Cambridge, the Caern of Knowledge, is literally like "no bone gnawers allowed" and it is a RULE lmaoooo. Its changed hands between Silver Fangs and Glass Walkers a lot and they see themselves as being super enlightened, but they're very much like a sept of rich assholes with money and privilege, as you would expect from fuckin ... Cambridge. Even the poorer garou living there still wind up with good housing and a lot of stuff because of the nature of the sept. Of course, it goes deeper than that, and they have Older Brother there, they have a strong bond with their patron and the gauntlet is actually THINNER there [5] than the Bone Gnawer sept because its been around longer. Its just also like... the stark difference between the "Urrah" tribes is immediately evident. The only Garou they draw in are their own.

--Avuncular Bourbon, (Bourbon, real name unknown) he/him. 34. Ex-bandit, ex-aetherblade. (Short stint.) He's joined a few bad groups and bowed out when things got too hot. Raised by dredge in the Shiverpeaks after being abandoned at birth in a mine. Currently working for the commander (sorry about trying to kill you way back in the day! Twice...) #bourbon

--Auruim, he/him. 10-11. Initially a close friend and companion of Alba's, he was quick to volunteer for the Pact to journey into Maguuma, where his Wyld Hunt was to be fulfilled. Corrupted by Mordremoth upon entering the jungle, he rose to become one of his commanders and champions. Years after Mordremoth's defeat, he would be recovered from the jungle by a group of asura researchers; six months later, he would be reintroduced to Alba in Rata Sum, from behind the walls of a cell. Recovered? Sure. Rehabilitated? Maybe. Socialized? No. Polite? Lol. Also currently working for the commander, like it or not. Incredibly traumatized and angry about both sides of the war that he experienced, and feels like he doesn't and never will belong anywhere. With nowhere else to point his hurt, he blames Alba. #auruim

--Aeris Windkin, she/her, occasionally they/them. 12. An early friend of Alba's, she dreamed of a Crystal elder dragon, and believed it to be Kralkatorrik. After great examination of her dream, she stepped out into the world with the idea that her Wyld Hunt would be to slay Kralk. She joined the Priory and dove into studying the brand, trying to find weaknesses to exploit to take down the dragon. She joined the forces at Thunderhead Keep, believing that she would play a hand in ending the war. Upon seeing Aurene for the first time, she was overwhelmed by emotion and thought that this had to be the dragon of which she dreamt before she awoke. But she was slightly wrong again, and realizing this, journeyed into the Crystal Desert for a time. At the end of her long search, she came to understand that Vlast had been her wyld hunt all along, but in the years she'd spent hunting Kralkatorrik, she had never emerged as Vlast's champion, and had missed his death. After months of mourning, she rejoined Alba's entourage and tags along after him on his travels, almost always a few steps behind. #aeris windkin
