Favourite K-Pop Releases January 2023

1. Onewe: Gravity

Title: This was so unexpected, they recorded so much for us in advance! This song is so fun and groovy, the bass line is nasty and I love it. Yonghoon and Dongmyeong's vocals sound amazing as always, and Kanghyun's guitar solo is an absolute highlight. Yes, it's an English release and not a proper comeback, but it's my favourite song from January, so first place.

Album: I won't lie, I was a little disappointed when I saw that all other tracks on the album are English versions of previous songs, I would have loved more original songs - but this best-of album is great too. Overall I was very impressed with how good the translations are.

2. Monsta X: Beautiful Liar

Title: Monsta X make hot dirty rich men music, and I'm here for it. I love the rock vibes the guitars bring, and as usual Kihyun's voice sounds so good here. Surprisingly my favourite part is the second verse rap, something about the flow and rhythm just works. If I had something to complain about, it would be the chorus - I feel like it could have gone a lot harder.

Album: Very solid album, the stand out b-sides for me are Lone Ranger (love the western vibes!) and Daydream.

3. TXT: Sugar Rush Ride

Title: I've had quite the journey with this song... First of all, the verses and pre-chorus are amazing, I love sound and the bright energy that builds up expect to a great climax - just for that climax to never arrive. I am a fan of anti-drops in general, unfortunately this one just doesn't do it for me. It has grown on me enough for the song to be ranked top three, but I'm still very much not happy with it.

Album: It's a good album, it's varied and the songs go well together. My favourite b-side is Devil by the Window, but I like the other songs too. Just - why are they all so short? And why do none of them have a bridge? I love bridges, and TXT songs usually have great ones! Please give us longer TXT songs with bridges again, I'm begging.
