X-Men works best, I feel, when writers understand on at least some level that it's really basically a cyberpunk/biopunk horror story that just happens to also be a superhero comic.

X-Men is the story of the world entering a new epoch where any random person on the street might randomly get superpowers - ranging everywhere from green hair to mind control - simply because they happened to win(?) a genetic lottery as part of a cosmic process programmed into humanity in ancient times by ineffable star gods. All around you are people who are ostensibly still people, but are also inhuman entities with alien powers who are gradually developing their own subculture that tells them they are the future dominant species destined to replace mankind. Many of them are just normal folks... but just as many see you the same way ancient homo sapiens saw neanderthals.

X-Men is the story of fear and hatred rising in the hearts of men in the face of that new epoch. Corrupt humans and mutants alike use bigotry and xenophobia to divide the two peoples, pushing them into a war not just for politics, but for evolution and the planet themselves. Mankind begins altering themselves and building machines of death to keep up with the mutants, in the process creating a third race of humanity; transhumans and robots, that in time come to be no different from the mutants, superpowered monsters of society's own making that see the humans as flatscan wastes of genes at best, oppressors to be destroyed at worst.

X-Men is the story of humanity fighting amidst themselves in their senseless darwinistic war while their world tumbles through a swirling universe of terrifying eldritch threats. Out in the stars and spiritual dimensions are alien empires once like us now advanced beyond comprehension, legions of magical wonders and nightmares in equal measure, lovecraftian machine hive minds that eat planets, demons that feast on our sin, cosmic entities that have as much in common with us as we do ants.

And above it all, X-Men is the story of how recognizing each other's humanity, of embracing love instead of hate, may be the only thing that ensures even a hope of survival in the face of the unimaginable, mind-breaking horror of a world entering a new era whether it's inhabitants like it or not... or perhaps, the only thing that decides whether or not we deserve to survive.

The best X-Men writers are the ones who recognize this. Chris Claremont, Johnathan Hickman, Grant Morrison, Kieron Gillen, etc.. The writers who recognize that there's something profoundly and utterly, existentially TERRIFYING about what the series really boils down to (a self-defeating war between mechanical and genetic evolution with normals caught in the middle that may be the extinction of all three races) and reflect that in the aesthetics and tone by emphasizing a cyberpunkish vibe.

Emphasizing that this is a world where people - willingly or not - alter their bodies like mechanics alter cars and any random person you see on the street might be a mutant or Sentinel or something that can kill you with a look, and that random person is probably hiding from something even worse that wants to kill them just for being born.

(X men Evolution) Platonic Yandere Trio Wanda, Quicksilver and Magneto and Magneto's youngest child reader from a one night stand who has Technopathy and who's mom was killed protecting her from anti mutant groups and the social worker contacted Magneto because his name is in the birth certificate and asked him if he wanted custody of them.

Ooooo! Thank you for specifying which X-Men media you wanted! (But I only do gender neutral Readers, okay?) I'll see what I can do:

It was hard, not having your mom around anymore.

She died protecting you, doing everything in her power to keep you safe, to let you have a chance at a normal childhood, and how was she repayed? The people of your old town killed her. They had meant to kill you, but she took the bullet for you. You were lucky to be alive, lucky to have been moved to a safe place...

But...

Now you were moving in with someone you'd never met before.

He was supposedly your dad. Or at least who your mom claimed was. She'd never really mentioned him before, save when she needed to give you hope for a better future, when you'd be safe to use your powers and not be attacked for it.

His name was supposedly Magnus, and it turned out he had two other kids: Wanda and Pietro, twins.

They hadn't been mean or jealous (what was there to be jealous about? you're a younger sibling with trauma), but they did act... stange? In a way. Always hovering nearby, trying to keep the other Brotherhood teens from being near you or talking with you.

You think your first bonding moment with them was when you and the group had gone to an arcade for fun. The machines hummed with life, with energy... And you had just the game you enjoyed just waiting to be played.

The claw machine.

The poor thing hadn't been able to give a reward for all the money it was given, but you were just the person to make it right. With a few quarters, and a quick snap of electricity, you had the machine buzzing with your commands. The first stuffed animal was a hummingbird, with bright blue wings and a white stomach. The second was an owl with bright red eyes. Soon to follow were more and more little animals, until the entire plushie receptacle was filled to the brim with your rewards.

You shocked the poor guy behind the ticket counter, who looked tired and flabbergasted. And it seemed you'd surprised your siblings, too...

"Take it. They look like you," you pushed as you shoved the two birds into their arms. You'd already packed the rest of the stuffies into large plastic bags, hopefully to send to the local children's hospital.

"How does this look like me?" Pietro asked, looking over the hummingbird in blurred movements. "Couldn't it have been, like, a falcon, or something?"

"... Why an owl?" Wanda asks.

"You're fast and can perform any trick in the book. So can hummingbirds! Can you see a falcon flying backwards? Also, an owl because you've got the whole witch aesthetic, and it looks like you! It even has black and red feathers!"

"... Tch... Fine..."

"... It will be my familiar..."

"Yay! Now, let's go give the others their's!"

"Wait, you got them some too?!"

After that, the twins were just-

Everywhere.

And if they couldn't be there, one of the other Brotherhood teens was instead. It only became a problem when someone tried to bully you.

Safe to say...

"Mess with them again and you won't live to make the same mistake again!"

"Let's see how well you do in basketball now, loser!"

The guy who'd try to pick on you now earned the full ire of Wanda AND Pietro, who made his life h*ll. And what those two decreed, the others followed.

People left you alone after that.

Of course, when you wanted to hide from everyone or hide your tracks...

You messed with the computers and lights.

"Ah man, I can't see like this!"

"Is it a power outage?"

"Someone get the janitor!"

Being in control of technology was pretty awesome.

It wasn't so fun when your dad found out.

"Reader... perhaps you would like to join my Acolytes? We would have much need of your mutation."

You took one look at the people your... dad, had on his elite team... And decided:

"Um... I'm good, sir..."

"Very well... And you may call me 'father'."

"Erm... okay... Father..."

What you didn't see happening in the shadows was your father having his Acolytes preparing a space for you anyway, so one day you could be with them. What you didn't see was Wanda giving nightmares and accidents to your bully, sending them into a chaotic spiral. What you didn't see was Pietro following you wherever you went, spying from as far or near as he liked, and telling Wanda and Magneto everything he saw.

You may have thought you were being given some control, but in honesty... That control was only an illusion.

If you ever tried to leave or go to the X-Men, you'd just find yourself kept captive, bound in metal chains where no one would ever find you, save for your loving family... They wouldn't risk losing their little technopath, the one member of their small family who can temper their personalities... So don't try to run, or they'll cut off any small control you have for good.

🩸In addition to those sexy red outfits you always wore, Hidan loved your powers.

🩸The way your hands glowed red when you used your powers to crack Asuma’s neck in all directions made Hidan fall in love with you.

🩸The two of you raised hell together everywhere you went.

🩸You would fly up in the air, unleashing a deadly barrage of your red chaos magic jutsu on your enemies and allow Hidan to go in for the kill.

🩸Hidan loves watching you torture Kakuzu with your mind control jutsus.

🩸”Put your money where your mouth is…” you say darkly. With glowing red eyes and a wave of your hands, you possessed Kakuzu and forced him to shove a stack of ryo deep down his throat while making his red green eyes roll back behind his head.

🩸Hidan howled in laughter as Kakuzu choked. “HAHAHAHAHA! HOT DAMN! YOU ARE ONE CRAZY BITCH!”

🩸Shikamaru was shitting himself. Especially when you went ahead and used your powers to possess Kurenai into killing herself and her unborn child, purely out of spite.

🩸He deemed you and Hidan too dangerous. He had to get a hold of you and finish you himself. To do that, he had to capture Hidan and lure you to him.

🩸He sure as hell got what he wanted when you arrived flying down to meet him and a captured Hidan in Nara Clan Forest. His eyes widened in fear as the sky above you turned a smokey bloody red. Hidan was shook too.

🩸With a raise of your red hand, Nara Clan Forest decomposed completely. Trees were reduced to broken branches, the deer became corpses, the paper tags on Hidan had completely disappeared.

🩸You uses your telekinetic jutsu to raise Shikamaru up in the sky before proceeding to manipulate the reality of his body and stretching his limbs into ribbons.

🩸You smiled evilly as Shikamaru shook in terror. “What ARE you?!” He shrieked. “Y/N: The Scarlet Ninja,” you say darkly. That was when you raised your hand and used your powers to crack Shikamaru’s neck before tossing his body to the deep hole that was meant for Hidan. You sealed him inside the hole and left him to rot.

🩸You flew down and met up with Hidan who was laughing evilly and he held you close. He then pulls you into a kiss. He then pulls away before taking off his necklace and putting it around your neck. “MARRY ME, YOU SCARLET BITCH!” He says with a crazed smile.

🩸You smirk evilly at that. “Not here…” You then use your powers to open up a portal to another dimension. You and Hidan then walk inside hand in hand to have your wedding with no interruptions.

Sasori:

🎭Sasori of the Red Sand and Y/N the Scarlet Ninja. The two of you looked aesthetically pleasing as a couple. At least that’s what Deidara thought.

🎭True art was eternal beauty and you were the epitome of that.

🎭To say Sasori was intrigued and fascinated by your powers was an understatement. He loved the way your hands moved and glowed when you used your jutsus. The way your eyes would glow as you killed someone was icing on the cake.

🎭Sasori would sometimes request for you to use your powers to enhance his puppets whenever they got damaged or whenever he had new ideas for some upgrades.

🎭He had many questions. Like how you were able to manipulate realities and possess peoples bodies almost like how he does with his puppets.

🎭”Y/N my Scarlet Doll…” Sasori said to you fondly with a dreamy gaze after you used your jutsu to turn the Hidden Sand into the ‘Hidden Glass’. You had used your magic to generate enough heat to turn the sand into glass and kill everyone in the village, but not before beating Deidara to the punch by capturing Gaara.

🎭The Hidden Leaf came for revenge. ‘How cute’ you thought. You and Sasori faced off against Sakura and Chiyo.

🎭Using your telepathy, you were able to catch wind of their plans. You immediately told Sasori. Sakura widened her eyes. “What?! But how do you know?!”

🎭Sasori snickered, triumphant that he can now easily counter her and Chiyo’s plans. That was when you teleported behind Sakura and Chiyo and used your telekinesis to take the antidotes out of their pockets before hurling it to the side, causing it to crack. Lady Chiyo was shooked. “NO!”

🎭Before either of them could do anything, you used your telekinesis again to lift both Sakura and Chiyo up. “How is she doing that?!” Sakura cried. You smirked before hurling them towards Sasori. You nodded to him to give him the signal. He smiled at you evilly before using his poison barbs to smoke them out and kill them.

🎭Afterwards, you given Sasori the thing he never knew he wanted after all these years.

🎭You used your magic on the mother and father puppets and gave them life. Although they weren’t entirely the same, they still maintained the same memories and love they had for Sasori.

🎭His parents hugged him and for the first time in over 20 years, Sasori learned to cry. He was beyond grateful to you and your artistic gifts.

Itachi:

🐦Can you say underworld power couple? Because that was exactly what you two were.

🐦Itachi of the Sharingan and you Y/N the Scarlet Ninja. With your respective powers, the entire shinobi world was shooked to the core.

🐦The two of you were dubbed by the entire world as “The Worlds Most Dangerous Couple.”

🐦The two of you certainlymade a deadly pair. Itachi would use his Sharigan on his enemies and then you would put the icing on the cake by pulling the enemies into a darker reality so that they could feel everything they saw in Itachi’s genjutsu.

🐦Itachi didn’t lie. He found some of your methods of dealing with enemies to be too ruthless, but if using your chaos magic jutsu or telekinesis to tear someone’s body from the inside out was necessary, then so be it.

🐦Itachi had questions about your abilities. If you weren’t comfortable sharing then he’d be respectful and not pry too much. Though he would get curious and try to read and learn about it in books (not that he’d be able to find anything).

🐦You tended to go overboard with your abilities. Itachi would be the one to keep you in check and lecture you to be more responsible with your powers. That’s one of the reason why leader made you both partners.

��Your powers came in handy, like how you would use them to teleport you and Itachi away. Itachi thought it was useful especially when you both were at risk for being tracked.

🐦Poor Sasuke was shitting himself. It was almost if that with you by Itachi’s side, Itachi was stronger than he was. Sasuke just had to get rid of you before killing his brother.

🐦He confronted you by pulling you into his Sharingan. You easily countered it by changing reality itself. You tore out Sasuke’s eye making him let out an ear splitting scream.

🐦He shook in terror as your hands and eyes glowed beautifully as you smiled evilly. “What ARE you?!” He asked in terror.

🐦You took out his other eye and then hurled him with a blast so hard against a wall that his neck snapped.

🐦 You then use your magic to implant the Sharingan into your own eyes and dubbed yourself the “Scarlet Eyed Ninja.”

🐦”Do you like them?” You purred darkly as you presented Itachi your new eyes. He gave you a glare. Although he thought the Sharingan further completed your scarlet aesthetic, he was still very upset that you killed his brother. “It wasn’t your place to do that…” he told you.

🐦You wrap your arms around his neck and hugged him close. “I did this for you, my love. No one will come after us anymore.”

🐦You brought him into a kiss. Itachi was hesitant but accepted the kiss as you got deeper. (Of course a little mind control on your man couldn’t hurt.)

🐦Itachi did nothing to stop you. He felt as though your toxic love was the perfect punishment for him allowing his own brother to die at your hands.

🐦That aside, the world now feared the Scarlet Eyed Ninja. Even some Akatsuki members like Deidara were shitting themselves when you were around.

🐦You’d torture him with your magic whenever he badmouthed Itachi and his Sharingan.

🐦Even though Itachi still loved you, he couldn’t help but feel as though he created a monster…

Deidara:

💥Everyone would run away in terror as you started using your powers. Not Deidara though!

💥You’d fly up in the air. Your hands glowing red as a dark red smoke surrounded you. You unleashed hell on the Hidden Stone Village, using your chaos magic jutsu to shatter and destroy everything in your path.

💥Deidara was on his clay bird watching with tears in his eyes as you turned the village inside out into a completely different reality.

💥The red colors, the mesmerizing movements of your hands, the glowing aesthetic, the improbable outcomes of the things you created and destroyed was all beautiful. Your “art” was unlike anything he had ever seen.

💥Deidara’s favorite aspect about your powers was your ability to make things come to life in a similar way that he did with his own clay.

💥You’d use your magic to give life to hundreds of explosive tags. You would then enlarge them to be big enough to cover an entire village.

💥BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

💥Several villages exploded simultaneously, killing millions. Deidara’s heart nearly exploded as well. Boy was in love with his Scarlet Ninja.

💥Deidara thought highly about you and would brag about your sophisticated art style. (Mainly to Sasori who was jealous of your abilities.)

💥In your spare time, you both would make art together. Deidara would make a clay bird and would have it fly up. You would then use your telekinesis to turn it into different animals in mid air.

💥Deidara would finish the job by making it explode. Sometimes you helped make it explode into red balls of electricity with your magic.

💥You saw how Deidara had a “Sasuke problem”. You were happy to help eliminate him.

💥You and Deidara had Sasuke in a bind when you fought in the forest. You used your magic to summon Manda that was in Sasuke’s possession and hypnotized the snake into swallowing Sasuke whole. You knew that he was alive inside though.

💥”Cry your heart out, because my art…” Deidara then tossed C2 into Manda’s mouth. You then raise up your glowing red hands and threw Manda in the sky.

💥”IS AN EXPLOSION!!!” Deidara activates his hands seal and made the snake explode. You smiled happily at the sight of raining snake skin and Sasuke’s body parts that fell from the sky.

💥Deidara cheered as you floated down. He couldn’t believe that both of your perfect arts was able to destroy Sasuke. He was determined to show the world the collaborative art you both made.

Kisame:

🦈Kisame saw you as his equal as he was highly impressed with your abilities.

🦈You two trusted each other in battle as you had each other’s backs. Was an enemy attempting to sneak up on you? Kisame would introduce them to Samehada. Was someone trying to stab Kisame? You would easily blast a read beam of electricity through their hearts.

🦈Samehada LOVED you too much. That energy was so delicious and powerful. You had fun with Kisame’s sword.

🦈You used your magic to enhance Samehada by enlarging it to be 3 times the size. Not only that but it took form of a red, flesh eating, mutated shark creature that shot out beams of red electricity from his mouth.

🦈Kisame howled in laughter as he devoured his enemies with his “scarlet sword.” He just loved his new toy! Capturing tailed beasts suddenly became easier.

🦈One day you both came across Team Hebi. The white haired boy, Suigetsu challenged Kisame to duel for the sword.

🦈Kisame smirked. “If you want to challenge me then you’ll have to go through my girl.” You stepped up. Suigetsu gave you an unimpressed look. “What? Who’s this lady?”

🦈”Suigetsu that’s the Scarlet Ninja! You can’t beat her!” Karin said. Suigetsu smirked as he held up his sword, now determined to take you down and defend his pride. “Watch me!”

🦈Kisame snickered as he stepped back. He watched flew up in the air as your hands glowed. He was in for a good show…

🦈…And a show he got!

🦈Suigetsu was lying down on the ground battered, bruised and in tears. He was covered in a mixture of “red watery jelly”. His severed blade was stabbed deep into his legs. His sharp teeth was rearranged. Jugo and Karin stared in completely horror at Suigetsu.

🦈”MY GOD WHO IS THIS CHICK?!” Suigetsu shrieked painfully as more blood leaked from the holes where his teeth once were.

🦈Kisame’s booming laughter echoed outside. He loved it when you’d go all out. Your powers always made everything exciting.

Pain:

🔮A god and goddess duo. You two were a match made in Hell.

🔮Pain thought you were perfect in every way. Your deadly, magical abilities were beyond impressive and would serve as the Akatsuki’s trump card.

🔮You made things easier for the organization. Especially when you would use your magic to seal tailed beasts in a matter of minutes rather than a few days.

🔮Pain made you his right hand woman. You did anything he asked.

🔮You didn’t hesitate when Pain ordered you to kill Orochimaru for betraying the Akatsuki. You tracked him down and used your magic to force the snakes out of his body before proceeding to possess the snakes by forcing them to feed Orochimaru.

🔮Pain made you feel so special after that by calling you his powerful goddess. The more he praised you, the more eager you were to raise hell.

🔮You and Pain had prepared for war. You had used your magic to enhance all the Six Paths by giving them the same abilities as you.

🔮You, Pain and the Paths invaded the Hidden Leaf. The village people were losing it. They had never seen a jutsu like this before. Could they even call it a jutsu?!

🔮Pain watched proudly as you used mind control on all the jonin, forcing them to kill each other.

🔮Asuma had stabbed Kurenai before killing himself. Kakashi and Guy had destroyed each other by tearing off each other’s limbs before dying of blood loss. Tsunade and Jiraiya were already nothing more than dead slugs and toads lying on the road.

🔮The Paths made use of their new abilities and used their chaos magic to blast the shinobi into oblivion. Pain finished off with his classic Almighty Push.

🔮It wasn’t long until everyone was dead, save for Naruto who was lying on a pile of rubble, glaring up at you and Pain. “YOU BASTARDS! YOU KILLED ALL MY FRIENDS!”

🔮Pain gave you the signal. With glowing eyes and a maniac smile, you raised your hands and summoned a large body of ramen that extended several yards across the lands. You used your telekinesis and shoved the ramen down Naruto’s throat, causing him to gag.

🔮His stomach gave out and exploded as Pain launched an Almighty Push. Naruto’s corpse scattered in all different directions of Konoha. Some of the blood splattered on your face. You smiled as it matched your scarlet aesthetic.

🔮You and Pain flew up in the air with joined hands, marveling at the destruction as the skies and clouds above became a menacing scarlet. You both turned to each other.

🔮”The world shall know our scarlet pain,” he said to you fondly. You smiled evilly as you placed a hand on your cheek. “Yes they shall…”

🔮You two kisses as the Paths continues to swarm other nations to raise hell by unleashing “scarlet pain.”

🔮Side note: Scarlet Pain would be such a great ship name.

Hello!! I briefly saw in your tags one morning about the flowers that Harry was wearing in the LNT mv. Did you ever elaborate more about the flowers? What can you tell me about them, if you don’t mind? Thanks!

I talked a bit about it here because it was the first thing I noticed, of course, its just a queer reading but I found it quite interesting that he was wearing the big flowers in three scenes, the observed bed/ the date/ the wedding. so it made me think of Queer Botany and The aesthetic movement in Britain and how flowers were queer coded in what comes to art either writing (oscar wilde, virginia woolf..etc) or visualized like paintings (Van Gogh's sunflowers) and decoration. And besides Lavender and violets were and still representitive for lesbians and sapphic women, the Pansy Craze well for ''pansies'' and effeminate men, green carnation is famously worn by Oscar Wilde as a symbol of homosexuality and sunflower and the lily were also one of the most recognizable floral icons of the Aesthetic Movement and their significance has a queer connotation through this movement.

and recently the V&A Museum did an exhibition called Fashioning Masculinities: The Art of Menswear with Gucci as a partnership, and on the finale of the show they had the Gucci ball gown that was worn by Harry on the cover of Vogue to talk about gender-blurring fashion X

they also have Harry as the background for the exhibition announcement on the website

In the exhibition they also have a section called ''Queer Botany'' where they explain how flowers and botany, in general, was used to signal queer identities:

Oscar Wilde for example was famously known for wearing the green carnation during appearances ''the color green and the carnation flower were queered representations of the homosexual “underbelly” of the Aesthetic Movement'' X

and it makes you think of the big flowers or the lilies Harry was wearing in the music video with his date and on the wedding

not only the Green Carnation was a representation of the queer side of the aesthetic movement but also Lilies and sunflowers.

for example, these two teapots satirise, mocking with their big flowers (lily and sunflower) tucked in their buttonhole and their limp wrists the movement, these two teapots were actually a satire with a criticism underneath it towards the way the movement was defining gender and sexuality, under the teapots is written “Fearful consequences through the laws of Natural Selection and Evolution of Living up to one’s Teapot'' portraying ''fears circulating in the 1880s about the effects that effeminacy and the blurring of gender roles might have on the future British population'' X

the lily and sunflowers were sort of used to symbolize how queer people used them to reverse a heteronormative meanings of the flowers, and how they were used to gender bend what feminine and masculine means:

the sunflower and lily were typically ascribed to the male and female gender, deftly queers the sunflower motif as it also existed as an “emblem of aesthetic longing” related to both unconditional, yet unrequited love [...]

the sunflower and lily are symbols of aesthetic longing and purity, respectively (..) the sunflower speaks to unrequited love that “dares not speak its name” as Wilde is often quoted, or a love that could not find valid acceptance in nineteenth-century society. X

the lilies for example, through this aesthetic movement and the queerness that defined it, these flowers were queered enough to no longer mean traditional interpretations of purity but as a way to reevaluate the definition of purity and '' arguing for a perception of queer identity that isn’t considered “dirty”'' X

like the Lily, through this movement and the queerification of botany as aesthetic, ''the actions of queer couples could be and were viewed as natural and organic within this cultural subset. Natural, beautiful, and pure, the lily could thus be invoked as the apotheosis of the Aesthetic Movement, while simultaneously being a symbol and defense of homosexuality'' X

so yeah, to just conclude, I think its really interesting that he had the flowers (that are actually from the new collection of Gucci called love Parade) with his date and while officiating that wedding :)

Hi!

So, I decided to do a little something-something to motivate myself to create art and/or write. Part of this something-something also happens to involve my favorite X-Men: Evolution ship of all time 😚.

I will simultaneously be posting most of these to my instagram (same name as tumblr name) and maybe other sites.

Why is Legend Of Everfree the best one?

It knows what it wants to be the most.

After 3 movies of trying to figure out exactly how involved and close it wanted to be to the series proper, Legend of Everfree comes swinging in the first song being boldly itself and no one else's.

The movie isn't even remotely concerned with magic from Equestria and instead holds itself to its own magic rules and ideas, which goes from generic wizardry to "X-Men Evolution but girly pop" which is a quick way to get on my good side.

It's songs are the most consistent in terms of quality and feel the most connected with the theme and aesthetics the movie is going for.

We've firmly figured out Sunset Shimmer as a character and her personality bounces off the others the best it has thus far. Having her central plot be about helping Twilight get past her own perceived failures as someone who is firmly past her own is clever and done with a lot of earnestness.

Plus the Villain feels like she fits the general idea of "friendship solves problems" better than any other villain the movies had and better than most in the series proper by that point.

If there was a movie that sold me on the idea of EQG being able to hold its own as a series it was this one, and its a shame it didn't last as long as it could.

Sci-Fi Saturday: Island of Lost Souls

Week 9:

Film(s): Island of Lost Souls (Dir. Erle C. Kenton, 1932, USA)

Rationale for Inclusion:

Since antiquity humans have been telling stories about humans becoming animals, animals becoming humans, and human-animal hybrids. As humans moved from superstition and religion into scientific methodology for understanding the world around them, it follows that this obsession would inspire science fiction narratives.

In 1896, author H.G. Wells combined contemporary discourses around Darwinian evolution, Galtonian eugenics, and the anti-vivisection movement with a shipwreck narrative and published The Island of Dr. Moreau. All subsequent science fiction narratives that have involved the creation of animal-human hybrids through surgery or other technological means derive at least some of their inspiration from this book.

The novel was adapted into a silent film twice (once in France, once in Germany) before a sound adaptation was produced in Hollywood by Paramount Studios, Island of Lost Souls (Dir. Erle C. Kenton, 1932, USA). As with Frankenstein (Dir. James Whale, 1931, USA) and Doctor X (Dir. Michael Curtiz, 1932, USA), this film is part of the cycle of Pre-Code horror films produced in the wake of the popularity of Dracula (Dir. Todd Browning, 1931, USA). It also marks the first time a work of H.G. Wells is featured on the survey, which at 9 weeks into this series seems late given that he's one of the authors competing for the title of "Father of Science Fiction."

Aside from its place in the overall scientific genre, Island of Lost Souls would have been worth including for no other reason than its dialogue inspiring Devo's 1978 album Q: Are We Not Men? We are Devo!. The Criterion collection disc release even includes an interview with band members Gerald Casale and Mark Mothersbaugh talking about how the film inspired them.

Reactions:

Whilst Doctor X was a horror film with science fiction aesthetics, Island of Lost Souls is more science fiction film with horror aesthetics. The beast-men makeup makes Moreau's creations indeed disquieting and monstrous. The uncredited work of Charles Gemora and Wally Westmore lacks the artistry of Jack Pierce, but is nevertheless quality for the era. Dr. Moreau's laboratory in the House of Pain is minimalist compared to the apparatuses seen in the laboratories of Doctors Xavier and Frankenstein, but he is operating further from concentrated civilizations on a South Seas island, and apparently doesn't require as showy equipment.

As an adaptation of The Island of Dr. Moreau it's fairly accurate in terms of core plot and themes. The accuracy diverges due to including a love interest for the protagonist, Edward Parker (Richard Arlen), in his worried, yet resilient fiancee Ruth Thomas (Leila Hyams) and the retooling of the novel's Half-Finished Puma-Woman into Lota, The Panther Woman (Kathleen Burke). As with adaptations of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Hollywood filmmakers felt compelled to include a sexy, dark woman and a pure, wholesome fiancee counterpoint in what had previously been a homosocial narrative of male psychology and interpersonal dynamics. Apparently, the male filmmakers found it necessary to insert a Madonna-whore complex where there was none, or more likely wanted a "whore" and felt obligated to include a "Madonna" for the sake of propriety, and/or to not alienate the female audience as they perceived it and the censors.

However, the male filmmakers were not just interested in adding sex in Island of Lost Souls, but amping up the original novel's violence. Scenes of abuse, torture and surgery without anesthesia directed at the beast-men were all carryovers from the source material, but the grisly fate of Dr. Moreau (Charles Laughton) was unique to this adaptation. In The Island of Dr. Moreau the Half-Finished Puma-Woman and Moreau battle to the death. In Island of Lost Souls the beast-men rebel and get revenge on Moreau, dissecting him with his own surgical tools in the House of Pain.

To my partner and my 2020s eyes the dispatch of Moreau by his creations was shocking and horrific. We noted it was gruesome even by Pre-Code standards. Apparently to its contemporary audiences it went too far, and this scene, as well as others seen as too explicit, resulted in censored versions circulating or the film being outright banned in various countries. Other Pre-Code films, such as Frankenstein and King Kong (Dir. Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack, 1933, USA), suffered similar fates, and like them Island of Lost Souls would not be in circulation in their original theatrical cuts until restorations were performed decades later.

Island of Lost Souls offers more than shock value and a Pre-Code case study, however. Karl Struss' moody cinematography and the emphasis on the characters as much as the narrative situation makes for an engaging film. Bela Lugosi's Sayer of the Law, with make-up like a budget Wolfman, may play more as camp these days, but he is absolutely committed to his character. Similarly, Laughton's impish Moreau steals every scene that he is in. For fans of monster or mad scientist movies it's a necessary watch.
