The best part of Black Mesa was I got to be buddies with the Vortigaunts on Xen. I even got an achievement for it which was nice.

In this version of the events on Xen, Gordon busts into their lab (or whatever it was) messes with a bunch of stuff, breaking a few things, then leaves, and the Vortigaunts just let him do it. Like, they didn't act like they cared much that they had an alien wandering around their facility, messing with their plugs and stuff. It's kinda funny.

Also, I know I'm in the minority on liking original Xen (not all of it, there are parts of it that are for sure not fun, but in general I liked it) but Black Mesa for sure did it better. Especially Nihilanth, they got rid of all the annoying stuff and just made it an easy spectacle fight. Excessive falling off the floating islands and dying was still an issue for me though but I'm willing to grant that that might just be a me being bad thing.

Though, while I'll grant in general, Black Mesa's better than the original Half-Life, I feel the things that Half-Life did good, Black Mesa at best did as good as or worse. Fighting the soldiers in particular was much better in the original. The only strong reason I can articulate as to why is that in the original they were easier to see (better graphics means mean more detail, thus further away, enemies kinda get lost in it a little) and thus easier to aim at. But there's more to it than that that I'm not sure why, just that they felt better to fight in the original.

Also the difficulty curve felt kinda whack in Black Mesa, like it was pretty easy right up until the end of the 'Questionable Ethics' chapter when the soldiers did the lobby ambush that was suddenly like super hard out of nowhere. And then it stayed hard until Xen when it got easy again. Part of the getting easy again thing though came in the form of encouraging me to use the powerful weapons more (I have chronic 'too good to use syndrome' but with unlimited ammo for them and no ammo for everything else, I was cured of it) so that was fun.

And as for that "I love you" thing? Again, we've never met! I live in the States, you're in Russia!

I could go on, but you get the point. I was already thinking about cutting you out of my life, Xen was simply the straw that broke the camel's back.
