Till the End of the Moon - Overall Review
Tumblr media
Hey there! It’s me once again and for the last time on the drama Till the End of the Moon. What ride it was right? Now that it’s over, I don’t feel any emptiness, it was in its ways satisfying, so for those of you wondering wether it’s worth the hype and your time, hopefully this review is going to help you decide. However, these are my personal opinions, some people might disagree with it, so please still use your own judgement.
Plot
The story is about an immortal girl who travels back to the past to prevent the becoming of a demon god who would wreck havoc on the world and cause the death of her loved ones. Even though it’s nothing super original as it follows the trope enemies to lovers, there are a lot of very good elements in the writing of the scenario. First of all, everything that is introduced (places, artifacts, objects, people...) serves a purpose and appears multiple times in the story. This was something I really liked. Sometimes a drama will introduce a magical item, for example, they will use it like for 2-3 episodes or even less and then it never comes back. Here, each object that has been brought on had more than one purpose. They explained the origins behind them. It was a very strong point to this story.
Furthermore, it was mostly consistent with the characters. Their decisions were obviously questionable, way too often, especially as the viewer knowing everything there’s to be known to judge if it’s a bad or a good decision. Sometimes, it was extremely frustrating, but if I have to be honest, there are only two things I am still very unsatisfied with. One being Susu getting drunk a night she’s supposed to hunt a demon, which really didn’t make sense to me since she’s not the type to overlook her duty. The other one being Ye Qingyu and resenting Tantai Jin, because it was an useless addition in my opinion since they didn’t really mention anything about it until the end, and it could have been overlooked. It wasn’t necessary.
Overall, the plot gets a bit 8/10 for me. It was very well written, there no big plot holes and everything was mostly very consistent. It loses a little bit of points because it wasn’t necessarily orignal and sometimes the characters were a little too frustrating.
Acting
At first, I really couldn’t stand Luo Yunxi’s acting. His character starts off as emotionless and something was bugging me about it. It felt kind of way too forced. However, as the character started to learn how to love, what’s happiness and sadness, I saw a big improvement. During the last episodes, while he’s being thorn between what he feels and what he must act like, he got me through a huge range of emotions. He did a very good job overall.
I liked in general Bai Lu’s acting, even thought it felt simpler. But maybe that’s what I liked. She didn’t show as much growth though compared to Luo Yunxi’s character and there were moment when I felt the script kind of went in a weird way when it came to her actions and reasonings. But overall, I enjoyed the different nuances between her three characters. She managed to make me cry, but also to warm up my heart. She did a good job.
I can’t completely just ignore the other great actors just because they weren’t main leads. I want to point out Chen Duling’s performance throughout the drama. She was amazing. Her character was very complex ad when it was time to hate her, I did. When i was time to forgive her, I did. She really impressed me. Su Zhenni’s performance was also great, even though she didn’t get as much spotlight. She was flawless. On the other hand, Deng Wei’s acting didn’t leave a big impression on me. It was better when he was acting as Xiao Lin, but there was something that felt a little weak, I don’t really know how to explain it. Eddy Geng did an okay job, I think his acting just lacks a little maturity for now.
One thing I really found annoying was all the shouting. I don’t put that on the acting skills of the actors, but rather more onto the director Every time they launched a big power, were in pain, they’d just scream... But like.. I guess I would shout from the pain too if I was struck multiple times by lightning, but most of the time it just didn’t work for me, it looked foolish and didn’t convey any emotions.
The general note for acting stands at 8/10 for me.
Visuals
So let’s just talk about what I disliked first to get it out of the way... The CGI. Oh god. When I first watched the first episode, I had a headache from everything flying around in my screen. Too much is like not enough, even worse. I thought it was going to be internet troll like, low budget. It turned out that the first episode was the worst of all and the on including the most of that crap. I think they had the budget for going all in, but it went overboard. At some other instances, they stroke back with the overwhelming special effects, but it was only for a short limited moment. It’s just a shame because the first episode is so bad that it doesn’t entice to keep watching without being very generous.
Now let’s move on to my favourite part... the costumes! Oh dear me... They were gorgeous. I was so fascinated by Li Susu’s headpieces all the time. She changed so many times, to the point that sometimes I couldn’t explain how could she change her outfit to something so luxurious in the middle of nowhere, but I don’t care. The structures on some of Tantai Jin’s capes too were very impressive. But generally speaking, all the costumes were great. Even the grass cape grew on me. That was a very strong point visually for me.
The filming places were beautiful too. The only moments I liked it less was when it was all constructed by the computer. In the space like universe. But the dark side. Anything related to the realm of the gods was beautiful. I loved the decors.
This drama could have rated higher in terms of visuals, but the CGI is really that bad, so I have no other choice but to give it a 7/10. The costumes really do bring up the ratings.
Soundtrack
I’m in love with the soundtrack. I keep humming it. At no point was it ill chosen, it always enhanced any scenes it was paired with. I don’t have much to say, just listen to the OST even if you opt out of watching the drama. It’s worth a solid 9/10 for me.
Should you watch it?
If you like a drama with no plot holes, go for it. Nothing is left behind. The acting is good overall. There are beautiful costumes. It was an interesting story. Even though it wasn’t the most original, it often left me wondering what was going to happen next. So I think it’s worth trying to overcome the big cringe of episode 1.
However, if you are not into romantic dramas, I would not recommend it to you as most of the story is focusing on the love between the two main characters. I wouldn’t say it’s what we should call a healthy relationship (as in many dramas...) so keep that into mind too when debating.
This overall gets a fat 8/10 for me. I enjoyed the ride and was happy with the ending, so going through the 40 episodes wasn’t a waste of time. Not on my rewatch list, but definitely on my no regrets, I recommend list.

𝕾𝖜𝖔𝖗𝖉 𝕾𝖓𝖔𝖜 𝕾𝖙𝖗𝖎𝖉𝖊 - final review
overview : EPISODE NO. - 38 episodes GENRE - wuxia
Xu Fengnian is the first born son of the fearsome warlord Xu Xiao, the Duke of Beiliang- and probably the biggest hunk of scum in the whole empire. despite his father being a great martial artist and warlord, Xu Fengnian can’t wield a sword to save his life, he’s shameless, he's lazy, he’s an all-round playboy- he’s a good for nothing.
or so everyone believes.
Tumblr media
l⃣e⃣ t⃣’ s⃣    b⃣e⃣g⃣i⃣n⃣
I love this drama so much- despite handling pretty serious situations that are matter of life and death, it’s so so so funny and chaotic. Sword Snow Stride is a drama which follows Xu Fengnian’s growth from a reluctant though highly intelligent heir of the duchy Beiliang to it’s capable, cunning and yes, shameless, future ruler. The writing of the show is so clever, and plot twists and political mechanisms are incredibly entertaining to watch.

[ I don’t think the drama went out of it’s way to be unique, although the plot is incredibly incredibly good and one whole pretty solid. the humour was incredible though, so a three gems ]
𝖗𝖊𝖜𝖆𝖙𝖈𝖍 𝖛𝖆𝖑𝖚𝖊 - ✨✨✨✨
[ the chaotic energy and humour is top tier what can I say ]
‘keep reading’ for detailed review
I don't think I have ever laughed so much watching a drama before- this drama, despite everything, is a comedy show. Every moment in this drama can feature in a fan made “on crack” video without fail.
jkjk
and I am exaggerating- just a little. It’s wuxia and also a ‘no-class-boundaries!’ kind of drama which I think is pretty snazzy of the scriptwriter. Xu Fengnian and the Beiliang’s ideology disregards snobs, rejects higher power and social norms- which is very cool of them and I support that dude.
Like, it has everything- plot? You got it. Really cool characters? You got it. Humour? You got it. An actual message? You got that too.
𝖕𝖑𝖔𝖙 - 9
From the very beginning this show opened with a bang- the way it introduced everything was super super cool and engaging and so funny too.
I felt really sad that I couldn’t give this show a full 10/10 on plot ( tbh no one can ever give any drama’s plot a perfect score) bcs there were some points where the plot fell through. Especially towards the last few episodes where Fengnian was saved one too many times and done so many favours in the name of his mother it began to feel a little- just no.
Nevertheless the rest of the logic was all in one piece, all the politics and all the scheming and the logic-ing of the characters was SO CLEVER. It was so so so fun to watch- it was fantastic. I can’t express how much I dig the way the things were revealed in this show. It had you thinking the whole time and I personally felt I learnt quite a bit from the show and Fengnian- as a person.
𝖈𝖍𝖆𝖗𝖆𝖈𝖙𝖊𝖗𝖘 - 7
GUYS. EVERYONE IN THIS DRAMA-
AMAZING, SHOWSTOPPING, SPECTACULAR, NEVER THE SAME-
Just. Incredible. They were all so fleshed out with such a strong sense of personality and identity. I love them all- that's all I can ever say or I will be here for ages.
AND THE WOMEN IN THIS DRAMA- LIKE- OMG-
they're so coooool.
I do have one complaint though, and it is that while drama has so many wonderful warrior women, most are not given any real power of their own. Their skills and their abilities ultimately serve to further Xu Fengnian’s progress and story. If not Xu Fengnian, then it’s Xu Xiao. Yes I know it’s a male lead story, yes I know we’re in ancient China, but perhaps we could have some acknowledgment that women’s contribution is often disregarded, or maybe a fun morally grey woman who just also wants to fight society and change her life?
And especially Jiang Ni (who is great btw), who really just exists to be Xu Fengnian’s love interest despite her very important background and I just think it's really sad.
But besides this, the characters here-
Chefs kiss.
𝖆𝖈𝖙𝖎𝖓𝖌 - 10
All the actors were fantastic. I don’t think there was anyone who really overdid their character or anything- they were all so good. The cast’s energy throughout the drama was simple and naturalistic. My absolute favourite has to be the actor who played Xu Fengnian’s dad Xu Xiao- he was so good and so hilarious.
I really loved Zhang Rouyun (Xu Fengnian) acting as well, I really liked his performance at the start. He doesn’t place beauty and grace at the forefront of his acting and didn’t care if he looked less than perfect which I appreciate a lot after the slew of perfect beauty you get in xianxia dramas. Though he does have his ‘I’m super cool and majestic’ moments where he does try to think about how he looks on camera, the vibe I got from him was very authentic.
𝖕𝖗𝖔𝖉𝖚𝖈𝖙𝖎𝖔𝖓 - 7
I LOVE THE PRODUCTION. I love the filter, I love the music- which is so... idk how to describe it. It perfectly encapsulates the vibe of snowy mountains, bamboo and swords and wind- The whole vibe is so calm and natural, it really makes you face the power and vastness of nature, the small, no-music fengshui montages that are scattered throughout the drama are so calming as well.
But. The fight scenes... are very choppy. They’re not especially smooth- with an exception of Nangong Pushe, of course. Lots of them are literally people just standing there and raising their hands and spitting blood, like, T-T why. You are a wuxia drama; kindly use those weapons T-T. But oh well. At least they look cool when they stand there and raise their hands.
And can we talk about Xu Fengnian’s lil’ catfish stands? WHAT WERE THE COSTUME DESIGNERS THINKING?
.
.
.
.
.
and now its time for..... drumrolllll
✨ 𝖋𝖆𝖛𝖔𝖚𝖗𝖎𝖙𝖊 𝖈𝖍𝖆𝖗𝖆𝖈𝖙𝖊𝖗𝖘 ✨
okay. okay. this drama is a nightmare for picking your 3 favourite characters THERE’S TOO MANY COOL PEOPLE- IT PHYSICALLY PAINS ME TO-
li chungang [ if anything happens to this old man next season, I'm starting a riot. ]
the whole xu family [ yes. all of them. xu xiao, xu fengnian, xu longxiang, xu zhihu, xu weixiong their family dynamic is hilarious and all of them are amazing people- and yes I am cheating ]
nangong pushe [ yes empty character, but she’s really cool- let me fangirl in peace ]

Asian dramas and relationship dynamics
There are my favorite relationship dynamics as a list. Opposites attract + power couple
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Drama: I Am Nobody /  异人之下 Characters: Zhuge Qing & Wang Ye Screentime: Minor I like it when characters are different in a way they could complement one another, but at the same time they are similar in terms of what is important for people to stay stuck together. Zhuge Qing is public, easy-going and wants to be friends with Wang Ye. Wang Ye is mysterious, reflexive and doesn't want to be bothered by other people. But no one can beat extrovert if he decided to be friends with you =) Plus, they are united by their superpowers: they are both powerful sorcerers and their sorcery is very similar in its nature. So they can compete and learn from each other and, if necessary, kick enemy's ass together. ̶A̶n̶d̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶i̶r̶ ̶d̶y̶n̶a̶m̶i̶c̶s̶ ̶h̶a̶s̶ ̶g̶o̶t̶ ̶t̶h̶i̶c̶k̶ ̶B̶L̶ ̶v̶i̶b̶e̶s.̶ By the end of season 1 they are OK and together.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Drama: Mysterious Lotus Casebook / 莲花楼 Characters: Di Feisheng & Li Lianhua Screentime: Secondary Di Feisheng is a leader of a demonic sect, a former slave and a very straightforward man. Li Lianhua is a former leader of a righteous sect and an extremely sly man with not-so-bad background. But both of them are the best martial artists in Jianghu and went through a lot together. One wants everyone to leave him alone, another wants to be with him together forever, and both of them don't give a damn about everything that happens in the world but they care for each other. B̶L̶-̶v̶i̶b̶e̶s̶ ̶a̶r̶e̶ ̶a̶t̶t̶a̶c̶h̶e̶d̶.̶ The ending of the drama is obscure but I'd like to think they both are alive and happy together.
Tumblr media
Drama: The Blood of Youth / 少年歌行 Characters: Xiao Se & Ye Anshi Screentime: Secondary A leader of a demonic sect who has an ultimate martial knowledge and the best righteous martial artist in the past, who is suffering from decease and can't fight anymore. What can unite them? The answer is: the similar mindset. They both had a great power and lost it, they both are shouldering great responsibilities that don't make them happy. Despite the fact that they should be on the opposite sides in Jianghu world, they are still good friends. M̶a̶y̶b̶e̶ ̶B̶L̶-̶f̶r̶i̶e̶n̶d̶s̶,̶ ̶a̶l̶t̶h̶o̶u̶g̶h̶ ̶X̶i̶a̶o̶ ̶S̶e̶ ̶h̶a̶s̶ ̶a̶ ̶g̶i̶r̶l̶f̶r̶i̶e̶n̶d̶.̶ There is a small extra ep at the end of drama, when they meet each other again in a very romantic way. Just search for it.
Tumblr media
Drama: The Legends / 招摇 Characters: Lu Shiqi & Qin Qianxian Screentime: Minor She is from a demonic sect. He is from a righteous one. She is immune to the impact of spiritual power. He is the one of the most powerful people in terms of spiritual power. She is dumb, straightforward and pure-hearted. He is blissed yet sensible and burdened with difficult moral choices. They could be an ideal Yin-Yang couple. But they have BE, because it's "The Legends", everyone should die in here Т_Т.
Pride and Prejudice + power couple
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Drama: The Yin-Yang Master: Dream of Eternity / 晴雅集 Characters: Bo Ya & Qing Ming Screentime: Main This dynanics is similar with the previous one, but here we are focused on how they ended up together. Bo Ya has prejudice against demons-yao and believes all of them should be executed. He meets half-demon-sorcerer Qing Ming who helps him to overcome his prejudice. Finally, they become friends (or̶ ̶m̶a̶y̶b̶e̶ ̶n̶o̶t̶ ̶o̶n̶l̶y̶ ̶f̶r̶i̶e̶n̶d̶s̶) and together they win over the evil forces. At the end they are separated but there is a hope they meet again.
Tumblr media
Drama: Wuliang / 无量 Characters: Po Xiao & Feng Ren Screentime: Main People of different social status both seek to get a magical sutra. During a road trip they exchange opinions on the sutra and how to use it and change each other's mind. In the end it turns out that they together saved the world and can be finally together. As friends, of course.
Tumblr media
Drama: Oh No! Here Comes Trouble / 不良執念清除師 Characters: Pu Yiyong & Cao Guangyan Screentime: Main Pu Yiyong looks like lowlife, studies very bad and hates Cao Guangyan, who is self-confident, smart and thinks low of Pu Yiyong. But a mysterious case with ghosts forces them to interact and they find out, that together they are a perfect team. Honestly speaking, this little series couldn't develop this topic as good as I hoped, but it's a really interesting story, so you can watch it for the ghost detective plot and get this type of relationship in addition. It's a Taiwanese drama, so BL-jokes and dalliance with a viewer were huge, but it didn`t help much. Still a nice dynamics and a good drama. Us vs the World
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Drama: The Untamed / 陈情令 Characters: Wei Wuxian & Lan Wangji Screentime: Main I don`t like the novel, but I like drama exactly because here I can see this dynamics. In the past life of Wei Wuxiang Lan Wangji was not strong enough to go against the whole world to protect his friend (well, in the novel they are lovers, but it kills the main idea of this dynamics by turning it into "I do it all just to get into your bed", which is meh), and his friend died. Suddenly, 16 years later, he gets a chance to choose once more: to be a part of society and watch once more his friend dying or to be with him against everyone this time. The moment he chooses to be with Wei Wuxian against the whole world I felt cathartic pleasure. The drama ends up on a little bit obscure but positive note.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Drama: Word of Honor / 山河令 Characters: Zhou Zishu & Wen Kexing Screentime: Main A former king's assassin who is at the brink of death and just wants to live the time left in silence and a birdy master of the most skillful criminals find each other, find out that they are brothers-in-teachings and decide to fight against the world together just to live in silence and enjoy each other's company. When one thinks it's his last second of life, the other comes to help him even if they both can't beat the greater number of enemies and will die for sure. Catharsis! The drama has a small extra ep where they are together and all right.
Tumblr media
Drama: The Legends / 招摇 Characters: Li Chenlan & Lu Zhaoyao Screentime: Main Them, again! The first half of the drama they have enemies-to-lovers dynamics, but then, when they find out the truth about Zhao Yao's death and about feelings for each other, they turn into Bonny and Clyde and go annihilate the righteous guys who are in fact not-so-righteous. And it makes me feel cathartic, too. A very catharsis-causing dynamics, indeed! It's little obscure, but they will be fine at the end of the drama.
Tumblr media
Drama: Dong Lan Xue / 东栏雪 Characters: Shen Yan & Chu Ningyuan Screentime: Main Two bad guys work together to get power in the palace. And get involved in romantic relationship during their power gaining. Nice story with an open ending.
Tumblr media
Drama: Derailment /脱轨 Characters: Qi Lian & Jiang Xiaoyuan Screentime: Main It's a little story inside a big one about transmigrators that you can read in another of my posts. It lasts something like 1,5 eps of the drama but is a nice story itself. A lonely bellicose boy from a rich family runs away from home where no one cares for him and lives on the street. A lonely girl from an extremely poor family and being bullied by classmates tries to survive in this world. They meet each other and understand that it's easier to fight their fate together. Nice story, it's a pity that this one is too short and not a main plot of the drama.
The next post will be about Asian dramas and familial dynamics.

Another cdrama wedding ruined!
Congratulations! You're cordially invited to celebrate the union of, erm, at least one of the main characters, and someone else. Maybe the other main character? It's not important. What's important is there is a wedding to celebrate!
Because this is a costume cdrama, the chances of everyone coming out of this happy day unscathed are very, very low. Something is going to go wrong - dramatically! But what?
Choose your favourite wedding day disaster below!
*or nearly die, or have their wedding otherwise wrecked
Tantai Jin hopes you enjoy your special day!

Till the End of the Moon - Episode 39
Tumblr media
Second to last episode. Already. It’s been a while since I watched quite consistently one drama so it almost feels like an achievement to have reached that far, so fast. I’m completely in the dark as to what might happened next. Cang Jiumin got all of the artifacts back. Susu came to ask him for the truth. We still don’t know if Ye Qingyu has become or not the king of Jing. I don’t know if I’m the only one still wondering about that? Like, they implied there was someone who knew about Tantai Jin behind that mask and they haven’t used that info yet and I kind of need closure on that. That’s the only think I haven’t seen reused so far and yeah. It needs to be used. Thank you.
He’s upset she came, but he still kills the demon that came to try and kill her. Then he tells her he did this because he hates her and can’t forgive her for what she did to him. She doesn’t want to believe it. But then the demon god take possession of Cang Jiumin and reaches for Susu’s throat, strangling her. More yelling. I was thinking that Luo Yunxi did a pretty good job in this part, like you can see him being torn while completely embracing trying to be the villain. But I don’t know why they ask them to scream all the time they’re fighting. It looks so stupid and kind of breaks any intense moment. Even though the demon god tries to convince Cang Jiumin that no one ever loved him, he manages to break free and release Susu. He tries to kill the demon god, but it doesn’t work, obviously and the demon god uses the demonic weapons to try and force him into becoming the demon god. It kind of backfires because the weapons don’t obey anymore the original demon god and Cang Jiumin uses them to absorb the demon god. Or something like that. It was weird.
He figures out that since only a true god can kill the demon god, it has to be Susu killing him, as she’s the daughter of Chu Huang and suitable to follow the Heartless way to become a god. So he tells the demons to announce to the different sects that he’s going to marry her in three days and they are invited to the wedding if they want to come and congratulate him.
Gongye Jiwu decides to let himself get contaminated by demonic energy, even though he’s going to become a demon because of that because he’s not strong enough to fight Cang Jiumin as he is now. That character makes me really sad. In all of his lives, he ends up being a puppet to others’ plan. He ended up dying miserably because of his stupid father as Xiao Lin. Then he’s manipulated by Dimian. He had kind of everything to succeed, but then... he’s so upright that it’s kind of his downfall. It’s so sad really.
Cang Jiumin prepared a dream like world like the one Mingye left behind for Susu to remember him after everything’s over. She wonders why he would love a simple mortal life, but he doesn’t explain much. In the end, she kisses him and they spend the night together as a farewell I guess. Then he takes her back for the wedding.
Pang Yizhi gave Gongye Jiwu a charm about the demonic punishment the gods tried to use against the first demon god. He plans on using it on the day of the wedding to kill Cang Jiumin. The other sects’ disciple agree to follow him in doing so.
I have to say once more though... The costumes in this drama. I love them. There was only the grass cape Tantai Jin wore for his wedding which was really bad (but still kind of grew on me anyways). Everything else... the head pieces, the capes, the details. The costume designers did a very good job. I mean, there’s so many of them so I’m not sure of the quality up close but on my tiny screen it’s gorgeous.
And as the wedding is about to begin, end of the episode. Only one left and it’s over. I have no idea how things are going to turn out, how it will be resolved. But none of the main characters died yet. So I expect that some of them will tragically perish during next episode, if not all of them.

immortal samsara part way review ep 1-16
hey hey hey
when you see me write a part-way review, it is very likely that I will give up on the series very soon afterwards, and today, our part-way review is going to be on immortal samsara and oh boi. it’s going to get spicy.
if you are a fan of the drama or the actors (btw, this is a critique on the characters and the drama not the actors) and will get upset by criticism, then pls look away, pls don’t ruin your day over a drama :(
okay friends- this is a lot longer than my usual part-way posts but,
lets begin.
Tumblr media

the angst okay, being the xianxia drama it is, is really good, I can feel it so hard. there was a whole episode which made me sit in bed crying the whole way through (it was really cathartic I won’t lie). however, the plot really is nothing new, I like it better than ashes of love because at least it doesn’t have a really awkward sexual sense of humour while trying to maintain an innocent front, but overall it’s not much better. the demon clan is still evil for no good reason and still dressed in black because hey, we need to judge people by appearances because that has never caused any societal problems ever before! and the heavenly realm is still good and perfect for no good reason.
however, there was one brilliant thing that the demon lord says to yingyuan before the great battle that I really liked which was along the lines of ‘the heavenly realm is unjust and discriminatory. they bar us from the same privileges, only by starting this war can our people have a way out from oppression’- which is honestly such a valid and beautifully morally grey thing to say! but the scriptwriters didn’t push this forwards and instead shot it down by making yingyuan say ‘yeah right, you’re just giving excuses to satiate your greed’. and of course, since yingyuan is endlessly good, the audience will undoubtedly side with his reasoning which made me kinda sad.
after all it seems clear to me that the whole universe in this drama is pretty divided and unequal. cultivation is probably like the most important thing in these people’s lives. for example the dragon king who came to visit his son said ‘wow the heavenly realm’s heavenly aura is amazing, great for cultivation’ suggesting the sea realm and other realms are lesser in heavenly aura in comparison. the heavenly realm monopolises the access to their realm, as well as cultivation books (as assumed from the rare and priceless books in yingyuan’s palace that everyones like so ‘omg yandan you got to read those?’ about) for who they like and if cultivation is people’s livelihoods in this drama, this is blatantly unfair and genuinely horrible. those who take human form in the heavenly realm or are of heavenly clans (such as the handan lotus clan) are automatically given a huge head start.
let’s put this in a modern context; its literally “yo so since you weren’t born white and also maybe because I don’t like you, you can’t go to school, yeah sorry about that lmao- good luck with surviving now, bye-bye!”
I mean with this inequality and this set up, had the scriptwriters brought this narrative forwards, the drama had so much potential to have so many impactful themes, like fighting against unjust rules in an unjust system that could feature both immortals and demons. And even if they didn't want to explore this route, and wanted to stick to love, a storyline exploring how to emotionally vulnerable could have been good!- it could be so many things! it’d also be so much more fun if the heavenly emperor was like a sociopath and yingyuan had to reshuffle his idea of the heavenly realm, departing from the good evil, white black dichotomy.
I mean it doesn’t even have to be as big as that! like anything as simple as changing the gender of the two leads- like ANYTHING that is slightly more original and slightly more fleshed out would have been so. much. more. interesting. and also- patching up some of the logic-ing in this drama would have also been good too? like just maybe y’know? like perhaps MOST NOTABLY IN EPISODE 13?

the acting of the leads, guys- is top tier. if it wasn’t for yang zi and cheng yi I wouldn’t have been sobbing my eyes out over this drama T-T. I'm so surprised why some c-netz yang zi fans were so upset over the fact that she was paired with cheng yi because my god besties, he can act. if I ever manage to force my way through the drama, I'm looking forwards to seeing cheng yi act as tang zhou who I hear is a more open and smily than yingyuan. aughhhh they both do so wellllll. these two- they rock.
meng ziyi is great too, she acts well as always and the actress (Vicki Xu?) of yingdeng plays her character wonderfully- even though I feel quite sorry for her for getting assigned a character who literally has ‘I am a product of misogynistic writing’ stamped across her face.
the rest of the cast tho... and the dubbing....? no.

I kind of wanted to rate it a 1 out of righteous rage (jkjk) for the writing of yingdeng which honestly makes me want to scream- it’s like everything wrong with the stereotypical perception of women is all condensed into yingdeng alone. she's crazy man chaser, she wants to use her wiles to further her career, she’s catty, she’s scheming, she’s jealous, she lashes out at women- the way that she is so one-dimensional as well- the scriptwriters offer no nuanced explanation to why she is like this besides from being obsessed with a man. its just terrible. it’s just so insulting. there’s better ways to make yandan look better without demonising other women- like- I’m just sayingggg
but anyway, before I slammed in 1/10 out of anger, all was saved by yingyuan’s survivors guilt arc and the scriptwriters attempt to write a dimensional zhixi. I found yingyuan’s survivors guilt arc with yandan really sweet and it actually worked to expose the way yingyuan thought and why he was (supposedly; we were never shown any instances) so rule obsessed (from the beginning he has been breaking rules- even his existence breaks rules- there is no instance where he is seen sincerely enforcing rules. his ‘rule abiding-ness’ is not particularly convincing 👀 and doesn’t make is rule-breaking for yan dan as impactful as it should have been). (But anyway) I thought they really showed what they meant to each other here.
zhixi’s writing, was better than what was done to yingdeng. sibling jealousy is something quite convoluted and confusing, coupled with zhixi’s meek personality, her actions are understandable and I appreciated the scriptwriters for that. though I have no idea how they plan to redeem her effectively- honestly. however while the scriptwriters offered a valid motivator for zhixi’s actions, she is still not a fleshed out character. besides from being easily manipulated and a force for problems, zhixi has no friends and other influences of her own which makes little sense when you consider that she has been around for thousands of years. it honestly makes her quite a flat character. but a little effort was made I guess.
but besides from these things, I wasn't particularly surprised by any of the other characters or their dynamics.

the production is absolutely beautiful, I love the colour palette, the styling the jewellery, the lighting, the concept photos... they’re all so gorgeous. my favourite set in the whole drama has to be yanxu palace, yingyuan’s home. I love the raw stone detailing and the deep turquoise colour which looks so good against the chess set with white and amber pieces.
I know some people have complained about the plasticy-feel of some of the props and I sometimes do get that vibe from time to time, however I don’t think that would be the biggest problem ever so I didn't nock it down by much. the cgi is good too.
my favourite costume so far in the drama has to be the dragon princess zhaolan’s. I love her nautical themed styling like her fishtail earrings, her super long jelly-fish buyao and her horned hair. its so cute and it suits the actress so well.
