that was his name, and the traveler's voice had a horrid note of terror in it; he startled up from the ground, or tried to, knowing he had to get to them. but before he managed it quite, his head spinning as the shreds of karma swirled and faded around him, the traveler's arms were around his shoulders and their hands tugging the mask off his face.

"Xiao, you don't have to hurt yourself for me, for us."

he blinked, eyes focusing slowly, gaze flicking from the tarnished mask before him to the traveler's worried face above. his numb hands were still clutching his spear, though he couldn't feel it. beyond, the dead body of the geovishap lay in a dark heap.

"I've always done so," he said, hoarsely, "I have no other purpose."

"don't be ridiculous," said the traveler. then over their shoulder, "Qiqi! come help Xiao - "

he tried to escape, but his legs wobbled too much beneath him, the bloodied scores from the vishap's claws throbbing across his side. besides, the traveler's hands still held him tightly, and it seemed rude to try to tear away from them.

the small, earnest-faced healer knelt next to him, her wide eyes solemn as she spun a globe of ice between her palms. its touch melted away the burning edge of the pain, soothing him as he breathed the crisp clean scent of it, the shadowy stench of the dark karma fading.

the traveler patted his shoulder again, their voice warm in his ear. "if you use your mask again, do it when you're sure you're well, not when you're already hurt. all right?"

Xiao swallowed hard. it would be difficult - difficult to remember, since he had been alone for so long. but the worry on his companions' faces was new and strange enough that he thought, perhaps, he could try.

he nodded, and smiled in answer to the traveler's nervous smile next to him, then closed his eyes to wait for the healing to finish.

“UNLEASH ME, MORAX!” Xiao screeched, struggling against the shimmering orange Geo constructs that bound his wrists. 

Zhongli watched silently, his expression unreadable. 

The boy’s body was consumed by a harsh aura, the manifestation of his own karma. Thousands of years had passed since Zhongli had rescued Xiao from the hands of his previous master, but the psychological scars left on him were still raw. When the days grew long and restless, Xiao was prone to slipping under its influence, and Zhongli was always there to provide support. 

The power of a Archon was one of the few things that could subdue a rampaging Yaksha. Even in his delirious state, Xiao seemed to understand this, subconsciously seeking out Zhongli when he lost control.

Crystals forced Xiao onto his knees, his arms crossed behind his back and mounted to the ground. Even under the enormous weight of the Geo constructs holding him down, Xiao still squirmed, thrashing his head back and forth. A line of drool fell down his chin, his pointed teeth on full display. 

Zhongli took a step forward, taking in a deep sigh. Xiao’s agitation only increased. The crystals groaned against their prisoner’s struggles, causing Zhongli to reinforce it with another layer of solid rock. 

“It’s alright now, Xiao,” Zhongli murmured, crouching down in front of the boy. He let a hand caress his cheek, touching the fevered skin, sticky with sweat. “The war is over. You don’t have to fight anymore.” 

His words seemed to spark some kind recognition in Xiao’s eyes. The boy suddenly fell slack, his head slumping forward, caving into Zhongli’s touch. 

“M-Morax,” Xiao whispered, the growl absent from his voice. “It hurts.” 

Zhongli brought his other hand to the top of Xiao’s head, gently brushing his fingers through his tangled hair. 

“I know, young one. I apologize. It will pass.”
