XIAO: YOU SHARE A SOULMARK you were told plenty by ver to simply ignore the young man who didn’t enjoy other’s company. you were also told plenty that he was apparently an adeptus, the vigilant yaksha in fact. such information was shared easily when, like many of the staff, you were truly working for lady ningguang. so when you saw the yaksha, you were more than happy to oblige his unspoken wish for quiet when you caught sight of the unique upside down bird tattoo on his right arm. the same one you had on your left. well fuck

ITTO: YOU SEE AND HEAR THE OCCASIONAL GLIMPSE OF YOUR SOULMATE you were sure that no one had as eccentric a soulmate as you, he was honestly quite entertaining. there was the time you caught a glimpse of him falling out of a tree trying to find an onikabuto beetle. there was also the time you were pretty sure you heard him laughing his ass off for highjacking a theatre performance. once, you were able to talk for just a brief moment in an extremely rare back to back thought sharing session. he asked for your birthday and you happily told him. it just wasn’t so fun when, at 3am, you awoke to hearing your soulmate beatboxing an enthusiastic happy birthday song to you (okay maybe it was really cute)

AYATO: YOU SEE THINGS THE COLOR OF THEIR EYES blue was your favorite color. of course, technically by default it was your favorite color because it was the only one you could see. you weren’t sure what green looked like and you couldn’t quite visualize the peach and violet sunrises your friend described, but you knew blue. the blue of the sky above you and the blue of the sea below, they were comforting sights on your trip to inazuma. you were finally making your way to visit the country on your quest to visit all the nations in teyvat with ritou your first stop. so when a merchant stopped you to try his milk crafting station, you decided to amuse yourself with the assorted mix of ingredients. “i’ll try the ganoderma and lavender melon” ganorderma is blue you smiled pleasantly to yourself. “i’ll have one of those myself” a man piped up from beside you. at that you, grinned and turned to face him with teasing words but they died on your tongue as you saw blue and then everything else

EI: TIMER COUNTDOWN the god of eternity honestly thought her timer was broken for the longest time when the seconds on her wrist equated to centuries in the future. even after she crafted her raiden shogun puppet and her true body faded away, the timer somehow remained. after so much loss, ei put thoughts of soulmates away and paid the timer no mind throughout her centuries long meditation. after encountering the traveler, ei finally looked at her timer and was surprised to see that meeting her soulmate wasn’t too far off from the future. imagine her surprise when she met you some time later, a diplomat from natlan coming to secure favor with the shogunate now that the trade routes had opened once again

Now at the train station, standing on the other side of the turnstile is Heizou saying goodbye to her.

The week was over in a blink of an eye.  Spending most of his break hanging out with Y/n was definitely well spent.  He did try to get a little more information out of her when they met up for the movie, but he was met with a brick wall.  She didn't deny the fact that she went into the publishing house and said that she was delivering a letter to Guuji Yae from her uncle.  If Heizou didn't know any better he would have thought that was the whole story, but not wanting to ruin this new found friendship, he decided not to pry any further.  

"Well, I guess this is goodbye for now." She said with a small smile on her face, bringing him back to the present. 

"I guess so." replied Heizou, his light olive green eyes meeting her icy blue ones. 

"See you around?" 

"Sure.  Oh, and text me when you get back home.  I want to make sure you get home safe."

"Haha, okay mom!" She said in a sarcastic tone.  "Bye!" 

She turned around and ran toward the train, her hair flowing behind her.

As the train left Heizou's field of view, he felt a small pang in his heart.  Was he really missing her already?  Did she make that big of an impact on Heizou to make him feel this way?  Or was it because she was yet another friend out of reach?  With Venti and Aether being in Mondstadt, Kunikuzushi in Sumeru, Xiao and Kazuha in Liyue, there was no one else in Inazuma.  Sure he had other friends, but why were all his closest friends so far away?  Perhaps this was because they had all become friends during college and after graduating, people are bound to go elsewhere when pursuing their dreams.  Then again, Heizou has no excuse for not visiting them.  Ever since his break up, he never took a break, so the only person to blame for his loneliness is himself.  Although the thought of showing up out of the blue would be funny, it would also be inconvenient to them as he doesn’t know their work schedules.  He wouldn’t want to impose, but perhaps this is a new goal he should work towards.  Hanging out with friends more often would definitely make him less lonely, not that he would ever admit that to them, and they could have valuable input on any cases he has.  

Speaking of cases, there is a personal case Heizou has been trying to solve this past week.  The subject: Y/n.  The reason: his intuition telling him that she is hiding something, something big. 

His initial observations of her was that she was hesitant and meek.  And that still stands true, but she was not one to cower when faced with problems.  That was already proven when he did the escape room with her.  However, he has noticed that she ever so slightly flinches when near larger men.  She even flinched one time at Heizou when he was reaching out for her in a crowd.  Based on Heizou's intuition, he deduced that it has something to do with childhood trauma.  Most likely some sort of abuse from her father maybe?  She mentioned her uncle as her only relative but not her parents, probably for a good reason. He knows the feeling well of how an overbearing parent can really dampen your life.  But he can't exactly complain that his father's teachings weren't a complete waste especially for his job. 

As for Y/n, her situation was a lot worse from the looks of it.  She was always completely covered, no skin showing besides her head and hands.  Most likely due to insecurities as she keeps fidgeting with the ends of her clothes, but covering up scars was also a possibility.  Her eyes would never meet his own for long either.  At most three seconds until she would avert her eyes to the ground or her hands.  Speaking of her hands, they were covered in bandages and it seemed like she also had a rope burn on her right hand.  

As much as Heizou would like to think he has her all figured out by now, there was still one thing bothering him.  Never in his life would he think this thing was attached to him this whole time.  

The red string of fate.  

A myth about a string that is attached to the soulmates' pinkies which bind their souls together. 

She knew about the string.  

She SAW the string. 

However, before Heizou could complete his train of thought, his olive eyes caught something coming towards him.  His heart dropped.  His ex soulmate.  Running in his direction only to stop a few feet in front of him.  

"Heizou, I know it's been awhile, but could we please talk?" 

"What is there even to talk about?" 

"I just wanted to say that I'm sorry for everything I did to you.  It was wrong of me and I want to be with you again."

"...You think I can just forget what you did.  We were together for six years and you decided to throw all of that away when you cheated on me with my friend.  I can never forgive you.  We are never getting back together.  That's final." Heizou said sternly as he walked past them. 

"But we're soulmates!" They called out, "We are destined to be together no matter what!  You can't just defy destiny!" 

Heizou turned around, anger evident on his face,

"Do you really think I care about that stuff after your little stunt?!  I don't want to be your soulmate!  I don’t want some stupid mark telling me I have to be with you.  I want to live my life the way I want to.  Preferably without you in it."

Furious and heartbroken, Heizou walked away, failing to notice the mark on his left forearm appearing once more.

Xiao, your best friend, your soulmate, your partner in crime. How could you not be enamoured with him? Everyone is. Well they are enamoured with his appearance, his money, not the real him, not the side of him that you fell oh so hard for.

Xiao, along with your 2 other best friends, Ganyu and Yanfei. The 4 of you had been friends since kids. Well you knew Xiao longer, you knew him even before you could walk or talk. The 4 of you are inseparable, the campus crush, the school prodigy, the popular girl and the sunshine of the group.

Ganyu the popular girl, gorgeous gorgeous girl, so so delicate, the mother of the group. Yanfei the school prodigy, the reason why you are just barely passing your classes, always scolding you for not doing your work but still gave you her work to copy so you can turn it in time. You the sunshine of the group, the troublemaker of the group to be exact, you are the reason why everyone is happy all the time, the reason why you could turn a frown (especially Xiao’s), into a smile. And lastly xiao the campus crush, pretty boy is what you call him when you are alone, teal at the end of his hair, beautiful golden eyes that he inherited from his father. Oh he is so so pretty, no wonder everyone is in love with him.

Everyone loved him for his looks, for his money. Well that is understandable, considering the fact that his dad owns the most successful and well-known insurance company in the world. But what did you see in him? It is certainly not his looks and money but the side he never showed anyone but you. Not even Ganyu or Yanfei seen that side of him. The side where he laughs freely, the kind of laugh where his eyes crinkles at the side and shines with mirth, the kind where his cheeks turns a bit red because he never really laughed this hard before. His laughter was music to your ears, always rendering the talkative you speechless.

You always thought its gonna be you and Xiao against the world, always thought that he is gonna be yours even though you are not together. That was when she entered the picture. The picture that you so delicately painted and produced was crushed the moment Xiao laid his eyes on her. You knew she was gonna be trouble the second Xiao stopped listening to your daily ramblings and was staring at her like she’s the entire world. She was like a breathe of fresh air, an angel sent from the heavens.

You wanted to hate her so so much, but you can’t. You can’t hate someone who made Xiao so happy, you can’t hate someone who is sweet like the candy Xiao weirdly likes.

When he stopped turning up at your usual spot, the spot where you guys go every time something is stressing both of you out, the spot where you just go and unwind, you knew you could only watch from the sidelines while getting your heart broken because Xiao will never look at you the way he looks at her.

You were such a stupid and naive girl, why would you think someone so pretty would belong to someone like you? Someone so loud and always causes trouble wherever she goes. Someone who can never match the goddess that is her.

When Xiao finally came up to you after what felt like eternity, you thought he would apologise for not hanging out with you, that the both of you would go back to when she was not in the picture. But no, he did not apologise, neither did he explain his disappearance, he only came up to you to tell you that both him and her had gotten together.

Your daily hangouts turned into Xiao talking about his new girlfriend, how amazing, pretty and sweet she is. Hearing Xiao praise someone other than you and your best friends hurts. It hurts so much that you can practically hear your heart breaking.

You wanted to lash out, to tell him how you feel, to beg him to stop breaking your heart so obliviously, but in the end you can’t. He looks so happy, happier than you had ever made him. His eyes fill with adoration and love seem to drain the light out of your eyes more and more.

At the end, you couldn’t take it anymore. You have to escape, you need to escape this daily torture you keep putting yourself through. Packing your things, giving your 2 best friends your last goodbyes and hugs, you prepared for your flight. The flight away from this excruciating pain.

Before you leave you had to do one last thing, that is to call him, to tell him everything.

"Xiao."

"[Name]? Why are you calling so early in the morning?"

"I need to tell you something."

"Can this wait? I have a date with her later this morning and I need to get ready"

Your heart clenches. Taking a deep breath, you continued.

"I am leaving Liyue."

"…."

Silence.

"W-what?"

"I am leaving Liyue, Xiao."

"B-but why?! Are you not happy here?"

"I was."

"What do you mean??! Stay there I am coming to you."

"You don’t have to, my flight is starting soon."

Rustling was heard from the other end of the line.

"You stil haven’t tell me why are you leaving! Was it something I did?"

"….Goodbye Xiao."

Panic. Panic was settling into Xiao’s bones. He has to reach the airport before your flight. Fuck his date later, you are more important. Xiao ran to the airport, he ran like he never did before, ran like his heart depends on it. Reaching the airport, he looks around frantically. He has to find you, he needs to clear things up. Suddenly he saw a familiar back and started sprinting to it. Shoving people aside and ignoring the weird stares and loud grumbles he is getting, he reached the entrance of your flight only to see you boarding the plane.

"[Name]!"

He could have reached you if it wasn’t for the goddamn guards trying to stop him from barging into the plane. The guards took him and shoved him outside the airport with a warning and left.

Xiao now laid on the ground, staring at the sky, feeling like a part of him was taken away, not realising the tears escaping the corner of his eyes. You truly was his soulmate, his other half. He just fallen too deep into the ocean that is him figuring out his feelings to realise that you love him as much as he loved you.

If Xiao had to declare one thing true, it would be “I do not have a soulmate”. There will be no comfort for all he has suffered, and he cannot be caught up in such mortal affairs. There will be no tug in his chest, no sense of overwhelming love, and no hope for him. It's not something he needs, nor something he wants. Until, of course, he was proven wrong.

You struggle against the heavy waves that slam against you, filling your lungs with salt water as you call for help. Beidou frantically steers the Alcor against the mile-high waves, calling for all hands on deck while you feel yourself slipping deeper and deeper into dark water. There's no chance she could get you in time.

In a final moment of panic, you call the name the people of Liyue whispered about. “A-Adeptus Xiao! I call out your name, I call out your name for assistance in the most urgent of times!” Your vision blurs and your mouth tastes of nothing but the power of the sea. The crashing of waves and shouting of crew members fall to a dull throb as you let yourself succumb to the waves.

Xiao stands on the bow of the Alcor with your wet body clutched tightly to his chest. He's surprised by his own speed, even as a adepti. He has never felt this way before. The sheer panic of losing someone he didn’t know existed sent his mind and body into overdrive, hence why he was able to save you so fast.

After handing you to a terrified crew member, he stumbles into a flagpost. His body feels tingly all over.

“What...” he murmurs, tracing a small glowing patch under his shirt. It's hot, hotter than the fire of a dragon and the pools of molten rock buried miles under the Earth. He sucks in a breath and pulls his hand away.

The glowing spot grows rapidly, exploding into a plume of divine light.

As the result of two fated hearts meeting illuminates his face, he knows he had much to discuss with you when you wake up.

Detective Shikanoin Heizou, the youngest detective in Inazuma, was currently sitting in on a court ruling.  As per usual, listening in was always exciting, but the part that Heizou really loved was when all the evidence was laid out.  It gave him a sense of pride knowing he was able to obtain indisputable evidence and put this case to a close.  

With the exciting part over, Heizou got up from his seat and walked out of the court house and let out a sigh.  His shift was over and he had the rest of the week off.  If it were up to him, he would have liked to keep working, but Kujou Sara forced him to take one since he hasn't had a break in two years. 

"Two years…has it really been that long since that incident occurred?", thought Heizou.  Truth be told, he would be lying if he said that he was over them.  All the time spent with them was down the drain because of "one mistake".  He got countless messages from them after that day saying sorry and a bunch of other bullshit.  Heizou scoffed at the thought of getting back together after what they pulled.  Yet a part of him still feels like he is supposed to be with them. Why?  Shouldn't removing the mark get rid of that feeling? 

He remembers telling his friends what happened a couple of weeks after the incident as an apology for being radio silent.  It was surprising to say the least to see Kunikuzushi so worked up on his behalf, but he appreciated it nonetheless.  It was also nice to be surrounded by friends that truly cared for him.  They all came to Inazuma just to comfort him personally.  Aether making him his favorite fried foods, Venti bringing the best liquor he could find, Xiao and Kunikuzushi playing video games with him, and Kazuha separating them due to the bickering.  Eventually, a smile was placed on Heizou's face.  They even came back to help him move into his new apartment.  A group of friends so unlike a certain childhood friend of his, well ex friend now.  

But the thing that really got him through this tough time was books.  His escape from reality.  Now that he has become a detective, he rarely has time for reading, but perhaps he should stop by the bookstore on his way back home and catch up on some of the novels he has yet to finish.

As he walked into the bookstore, a sense of nostalgia washed over him.  When he was a kid, he would come to this very same store after his father's martial art lessons.  Spending hours upon hours, curled up on the bean bag chair in the corner of the store reading his heart's content.  Of course when it got too late into the night, his older sister would find him and would have to drag him back home.  

With a small smile adorning his face, Heizou perused the shelves until something caught his eye.  A murder mystery book and by the looks of it.  Instantly flipping to the back of the book, the author bio is short and has no picture.  From this knowledge, Heizou deduces that the author is relatively new to writing.  The bio only notes that the author is from Liyue and likes spicy food.  Obviously, the Yae Publishing House doesn't want this author to be well known just yet.  It's most likely a ploy to increase the sales like it did with Miss Hina and her appearance revealed.  He hopes that this new author won't be overwhelmed when the time comes.  To put it simply, Heizou adores the fact that there is an author writing mystery.  There aren't many authors who take up the genre, so Heizou is excited to see what is in store for this new author.  Briefly looking at the summary, and deciding to buy it, Heizou makes his way back home to indulge his curiosity.
