(Major spoilers for S5 of criminal case (the conspiracy) and case 60 specifically! Though there are slight nods to other cases that are spoilers too!

This has been in my WIPs for like at least a week or two at this point and I’ve finally finished this when I decided to ask for other writing ideas. This always happens.

There’s brief talk of medical equipment and hospitals here some or more briefly mentioned than in other things. And funnily enough this begun as a stupid joke I Made)

SPOILERS ARE UNDER THE CUT

Zoe finally turns away to peer up at the clock, the beeping of the monitor starting to sound more and more distant as she focuses on it until the subtle stirring caught the woman’s attention. “Oh, you’re awake.. thank goodness!” The instant wave of relief washed over her face which was wrought with worry at first.

David blinks blearily in response.

“How are you feeling?” Zoe’s voice is soft as she leans in, the corners of her eyes crinkle as she watches intently. She didn’t expect that much of a response.. but he was awake and that’s what she’d been waiting for.

“Better.. now .. I see you..”

Zoe lets out a surprised chuckle and a hesitant hand reaches out and the hesitation is evident, but her hand is placed against his cheek and her fingers brush against in a bit of a jittery manner.

“Zo..r..?”

Zoe pauses, her eyes narrowing and her lips pull into a thin line. “What was that, Darling?”

David tilts his head closer and his eyes narrow in response too in confusion. He was perfectly clear, at least he was sure of it.

“Xor..” David paused, eyes wandering back up to meet Zoe’s as if to question the pure look of confusion on her face rather than the one of approval he’d been seeking. “You..r name.” He continues on.

“My name?” Zoe questions to confirm what she has heard. She stifles the laugh clawing at her throat, keeping her lips in a thin tight line.

“Xoer..” David’s lips pressed together. “Wh.. arr yoou soo confus..ed?”

“You’re… close.” Zoe murmurs, her throat tightens and she clears it.

“Thou.ght.. I haad.. it.” David responds, one of his hands raises up to rub at his eyes.

“I’m not that surprised,” Zoe says, stroking his cheek with a small smile.

“Wh..?” David’s voice is scratchy, painful even to listen to.

“Whatever the Doctors have you must be strong, you’ve been knocked out for a while. Must’ve been a good rest? You need it anyways.” Zoe licks her lips, biting the inside of her cheek as she swallows Thickly.

“It’s no…ot.. that.. good..” David’s voice trails off, getting softer by the second. “I tho…ght.. was close.”

“Well, you’re certainly trying,” Zoe let’s out a soft chuckle.

And David frowns at this because he was certain he had said it correctly this time. He in fact, did not say it correctly this time.

“how are you feeling?” Zoe murmured softly, her eyes had softened as she leans closer. “You must be thirsty.” She states the corners of her mouth crease with concern as the words leave her mouth.

David licks his lips, they’re in reflection dry and so is his throat and mouth so he can’t exactly deny the observation.

“I can go get you something,” Zoe says quickly and she steps up to do so until a bandaged hand shot out onto her wrist to keep her from moving.

“Stay.” David murmured, he winces feeling the bandages rub against his skin but it subsides when Zoe stops mid-step.

“David,” Zoe’s voice slightly rises as if in a scolding tone but she resorts to explaining. “I’ll be right back,” she assured, she reaches out her other hand to grasp David’s other hand with a soft smile. “You need some water, I don’t want you to be sitting here if you need some.”

“I eed ou.” It’s hard to make out the words through David’s slurred speech.

“yes, and you need water too.” Zoe quickly responded. “I’ll be right back,” she promises. “I’m going to get you some water and I’ll come back to be with you.”

David shakes his head and at this point it’s the most movement and speech, if she could even call it that he’d made since he’d woken up which was certainly a good thing.. but he probably should be taking it more easy.

“If you let me go…” Zoe paused, chewing the inside of her cheek as if to decide on what to offer so she could complete the simple task of retrieving water. “If you let me go, I’ll give you a kiss when you come back.”

David’s lips purse and it seemed as if he was debating the option he was given. “Th…inking..”

Zoe nods hoping that David didn’t put too much thought into it and accepted it. “But…you ive.. kiss…kisses any…nyways..”

Shoot.

“You… do have a point there.” Zoe’s eyes wandered and finally hit on a button lodged between the hospital bed and the counter.

David nodded, his lips curled up into a small smile. He was clearly proud of himself for figuring that out. “Wh…y no…oot…now?”

“Now what?” Zoe’s eyebrows raised in response.

“Iss… -kii..ss…” David say’s and He pulls his hand from being entangled with Zoe’s fingers and he tightens his grip on her wrist pulling her closer.

“Is that what you want? Didn’t you want water? And there’s that… button there.. the whole time.” Zoe’s voice trailed off and she pulls away and David seemed disappointed.

“-ant.. pr…eesss. It.” David stated fumbling with his hands.

“I can.” Zoe immediately offered and she leans to do so. “Water, right?”

David nodded. “Alw…ways.. kn…ow..wh…aat.. I wa-“

Zoe let’s out a stifled giggle. “David, you’re just dehydrated.”

“Noo… not.. deh…dehy…dr…tated..” Zoe suppresses another giggle At this.

Zoe presses the button and a Nurse comes in to access the situation and Zoe makes the request and with her own barely hanging in their grip she helps steadying David’s hands so he can drink the water.

“-ill waiting..”

Zoe Tilts her head to this after a while of silence before David had made an attempt to say anything. “Waiting for what, Darling?”

“Ou. Y…ou..” David repeated without any hesitation.

“I’m right here, silly.” Zoe said, she blinks as she peers at His expression.

“No, … iss..no kiss…here..”

“Again, bold today, are we?” Zoe’s voice drops to be a good bit softer and she does lean in until both of their foreheads press together.

“Is this close enough for you?” Zoe Questioned gently. “This should really.. be the last thing on your mind now.” She sighs with a small smile placed on her lips, she closes in the gap between David and herself with a quick peck to the lips and she pulls away.

Zoe giggles quietly to herself when either find themselves moving and the open palm of her hand caressed his cheek. “I’m so glad you’re okay…” she murmurs.

“G…lad…you’re …he…re… ont.. want.. you..to.. le…eave..” David murmurs and Zoe nods, leaning in once more with their lips touching and she doesn’t pull away immediately, melting into each other’s touch. It’s relaxing, comforting even to being held within.. this time just them all alone.

they both part from the kiss when air is needed and Zoe’s thoughts cloud in her head and she bites down on her lip debating on mentioning what she’d been waiting to say for a bit now, she probably didn’t have the best timing and she opts to not. “You should probably get some more rest.” Zoe insists her voice soft as she encourages David to rest more.

She was expecting to be met by more resistance Than David simply requesting she stay, she squeezed his hand in her own, leaning her head back against the chair. Zoe takes a deep breath, and maybe a sigh of relief as well.

All was going to be well, she just needed to find the time.

Because Empires has ended I’ve decided I may as well just post all my headcanons that I’ve gathered so far (they’re all over the place and some aren’t unique so sorry abt that)

1. Pearl and Sausage are siblings with Pearl being older by a couple years

2. Sausage and Pixl have a rivalry from when they were younger, it’s turned friendly but they keep up the charade for jokes

3. The wither rose alliance are childhood friends and met at a grand ball being held in Grimlands, Pearl was making sure Sausage didn’t cause problems and the roseblings stuck together since they didn’t know anyone there. They met when Sausage decided to sneak out causing Pearl to follow and the roseblings chose to go outside away from the noise.

4. Scott didn’t have much friends in Rivendell growing up, even less in other empires but did have Katherine as their families were close allies and Shrub later on because he was one of the first people to meet her when she got to the universe.

5. Scott was the obvious favorite from a young age as he resembled Aoer and Xornoth, resembling and acting like Xoer, was so hated especially by the king that he got sent away and made all the high wizards wipe the memory of him ever existing.

6. Although he was the favourite, that did not make his life any easier as he had extremely high expectations set on him and would be told not to feel his emotions as they didn’t want to stir his ice magic.

7. Lizzie finds small creatures very adorable which is why she compliments Shrub and the Undergrove a lot everytime she passes by and why her husband is the height he is.

8. After a few days of roaming on land, Lizzie had lived in the Lost Empire. At one point, Joey and Lizzie were in an arranged marriage to which they made a plan for Lizzie to run away from (I have an extremely long explanation and story on this that I could make a fanfic)

9. Joey and Lizzie have a strong friendship but like messing with each other a lot as though they’re fake rivals.

10. The citizens of the Ocean and Lost Empire don’t like each other as they think their rulers are enemies, Lizzie sometimes trys to explain but it never really works. Joey just sits quiet cause he thinks it’s funny.

11. “The Sea Witch” came from when Lizzie and Joey were once swimming together in the Lost Empire as children because according to Joey under water she looked like a witch. They also watched The Little Mermaid together and Lizzie loved Ariel but Joey would tease her by saying she’s more like Ursula (the sea witch)

12. Lizzie wasn’t 10 foot tall until after her transformation.

13. Jimmy thinks that talking to fish, specifically cod, is normal and that everyone can do it (since the only example he had was his seabling)

14. Jimmy isn’t too good at spelling and can’t tell his directions that well.

15. Almost no one has seen the codfather without his head until he became codboy. Even when Fwhip hid it, he had a backup.

16. He wears the head a lot as the cod head helps him breathe on land though the one he would wear when Fwhip took the original wasn’t as good.

17. Lizzie doesn’t need help breathing on land as axolotls can stay above water for much longer than cod and her empires surrounded by water so it isn’t much of a problem. If she does more bubbles then she can just take a dive into it.

18. Lizzie with a snap of her fingers can automatically dry her skin of all the water on it. Which is quite useful for when Jimmy tries pranking her.

19. Gem is older than Fwhip by 4 minutes and holds it above him at all times.

20. Gem being older, she was meant to take over the Grimlands, but at the time, the Grimlands didn’t allow female rulers so she got skipped making Fwhip the ruler.

21. Gem didn’t mind not being an emporer but didn’t like it that the reason was purely because she was a woman. This caused an huge argument that resulted in her flying off for crystal cliffs. It was the first and only time that Gem had fully yelled at someone.

22. Fwhip wasn’t too happy about what happened either and made sime major changed after he had gotten crowned. The changes consisted of going by Count more than Emperor as he didn’t want to be like his parents in any way.

23. Another change was a different name for the land he ruled as years ago Sausage and Fwhip made a silly agreement that if they ever became emperors they would change their empires name to have “land” in it, not expecting it to happen as they both had older sisters.

24. Pearl intentionally walked out of being an Emperor before her coronation because she wanted to start her own empire that didn’t have a history with…blood sheep.

25. Pearl is buff, the muscle and one of the strongest emperors, she’s like a tank. This is canon.
