The global chip shortage is so bad car companies have stopped production. How has the chip search shortage effected game development? For example, have developers held back on upgrading company pcs or have game sever costs increased as it is harder to get server chips?
Internally, it's become more expensive and difficult to source workstation upgrades and new dev kits. My personal workstation was scheduled in January for a needed RAM upgrade that my company wasn't able to fill until until May. PS5 and XSX dev kit waiting lists are growing, but the supply of old PS4/Xbone dev kits is so high already that sourcing them is not difficult at all. I don’t work closely with live ops because I’m on development, so I’m not really clear on what is happening with server costs.
Externally, the chip shortage is encouraging publishers toward longer-term support for legacy consoles (PS4 and Xbone) and PC. In a typical console cycle, legacy platform support gets phased out over the first year or so of the new console’s lifespan. However, due to the chip shortage constraints on new console supply, the PS5/XSX installed base isn’t as big as it should be at this point. About 8 months after the PS4 launch, Sony had around 20 million PS4s sold. We’re currently at about half that for the PS5. As a result, the older established platforms are getting a bit more attention, especially from smaller publishers/devs.
