Dreamlike Dispatch 1 of 9
PLEASE NOTE: These posts started as quick emails to @starsandatoms about the slashy stuff in Granting You a Dreamlike Life that spiraled out of control. If you, like me, are only interested in the Zhu Yilong bits of Dreamlike because overall it is Not a Good Show, then please enjoy these very incomplete recaps I made while fast forwarding through the episodes until I saw his face, lol.
THERE ARE SPOILERS FOR ALMOST EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENS TO ZHU YILONG’S CHARACTER IN GRANTING YOU A DREAMLIKE LIFE. ALSO, YOU WILL NOT LEARN AT LEAST 50% OF WHAT IS HAPPENING IN THE SHOW, BECAUSE I DIDN’T EITHER. I can’t emphasize enough how incomplete my grasp of this show is. I only focused on the important things, aka screencaps of Zhu Yilong crying. You’re welcome.
Recap One | Two | Three | Four | Five | Six | Seven | Eight | Nine
Lol so I had to pause halfway through episode 3 to tell you two important things:
1. This show is extremely stupid
2. ZHU YILONG WANTS TO KILL ME, HE JUST WOKE UP IN BED WITH HIS CHILDHOOD FRIEND WHO RETURNED AFTER YEARS ABROAD AND THEY CELEBRATED WITH A NIGHT OF DRUNKEN DEBAUCHERY AND APPARENTLY SEX
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I guess I'm a sucker for the cdrama "you were asleep but I had to examine something on your other side so my mouth is in the vicinity of your mouth now" trope??? I was feeling pretty on the fence about continuing with this show (IT'S SO STUPID) but damn if they didn't reel me the hell in with this one, I am a simple creature looool. Here is the quick rundown you didn't ask for for a show I don't really know the plot of: Zhu Yilong appears to be some sort of minor gangster who is a jerk, but attractive. We're in the past (???). His childhood best friend is a pilot and studied in France and apparently the main thing he learned is how to greet men by kissing them on both cheeks, which Zhu Yilong has been aggressively avoiding for two episodes. When he returned from abroad in his own little one-seater plane, Zhu Yilong martial arts tripped him so that he could do this in front of a mostly female crowd of admirers who had been waiting for the best friend:
Tumblr media
Several people volunteer to take the friend home in their cars, but Zhu Yilong says NO, HE WILL GO ON THE BACK OF MY MOTORCYCLE, FUCK OFF. Then the childhood friend feels him up on the motorcycle and says that the only bodies he's examined for months have been cadavers (????!!). (He's a doctor if that helps somehow???)
Tumblr media
And then they got blind drunk at his welcome home party, splashed water at each other in a pool with another guy while ALL OF THE WOMEN WERE PARTYING ON DRY LAND, and then they woke up together. I have no idea what this fucking show is about in any way.
ANYWAY UPDATES TO COME AS I RECEIVE THEM, BYE.

Countdown To ZYL's Birthday:
Zhu Yilong's alphabet: L - Luo Fu Sheng
Fu Sheng holds a special place in my heart. Might be because of he was played by Zhu Yilong? 🤔 Character-wise, it's the type of character that I especially like; The type you couldn't leave him alone.

Zhu Yi Long has the type of face that can take on any role....from the naive tender bestfriend loving and suffering in silence to the cold blooded psychopath finding pleasure in seeing you bleed as he cuts you open. And his acting is also that flexible and nuanced that each role comes alive in the most vivid way and as an audience you feel immersed and awed.

For any of you out there who watched and enjoyed Granting You a Dreamlike Life and are interested to know more of the story... there is a novel!
For a while, there was a machine translation (MTL) posted, but the links all now seem to be defunct.  So, I’m going to give translating it a go.  This will be mostly a heavily edited MTL, but I’m doing my best to keep it as accurate as possible by working with a multitude of translation sites/dictionaries/Baidu-Baike for cultural references and a little help from friends whose Mandarin capabilities far exceed my own.
No promises about how quickly this is going to happen; chances are the chapters will go up in fits and starts.  (...that’s just how ADHD rolls sometimes.  OTZ)  But I’m hoping that if I start posting what I have so far it will encourage some accountability on my end, so I guess we’ll see?  ^_^
Anyway.  You can follow my translation group on Novel Updates (link above) or you can follow the translation blog directly on wordpress to know when new chapters are out.  For now, the first chapter is up if you’d like to peruse!  ^_^  Enjoy?  ^_^

Dreamlike Dispatch 8 of 9
See Recap One for a complete note, but TL;DR SPOILERS FOR ZHU YILONG’S PARTS OF GRANTING YOU A DREAMLIKE LIFE.
Recap One | Two | Three | Four | Five | Six | Seven | Eight | Nine
So all that gang stuff that I was skipping turned out to be "important to the plot", or whatever. Not only is the girl adopted, but she is the long lost daughter of the third big gang family in town (gangs for everyone!!!). For power struggle reasons, Zhu Yilong's foster dad tells him to kill her and then he can come back to the family. That same evening, the girl writes Zhu Yilong a note breaking up with him saying the gang stuff is Kind of a Lot and They Should Maybe Just Cool It For Now. The combined blow of both these things drives Zhu Yilong to immediately walk outside in the rain until he collapses. He catches a fever and sleeps for two days.
Tumblr media
When he wakes up, he is desperate to make sure nobody has murdered his girlfriend, but the best friend throws him in jail for bullshit reasons instead!!! He can always be counted on!!!
Tumblr media
Please note: he is also shackled at the ankles out of frame. These are important details.
It is around this point that everybody's dad starts to die. I mean EVERYBODY'S DAD, and a mom for good measure. The girl has just rediscovered her bio family, so she gets to watch a SECOND father die. It's just wild. It's like a four-episode period of almost nothing but convoluted patricides.
(If you care and can follow this: The best friend's dad is revealed to be the Big Bad - again this might have been obvious to people who actually watched the show - and back in the day he killed the girl's mom (also played by the girl), but the girl's dad thought Zhu Yilong's dad (also played by Zhu Yilong) did it and killed him over it. The best friend's mom, who's been kept in an asylum for years so she won't reveal the secret, reveals the secret at The Big Wedding, at which point the best friend's dad shoots his mom in front of everybody, and then the best friend shoots his own dad. The gist of this is that everybody's dad used to be in love with the girl's mom and it caused problems? At this point I was clutching my head and whispering "what the fuck" quietly to myself so who even knows.)
The Japanese get Zhu Yilong's foster dad.
Tumblr media
Foster dad, I too almost can't anymore.
The girl's bio dad is killed at the foster dad's funeral, trying to break through a barricade of cops that the best friend has set up so nobody can go mourn, because he is an asshole.
He is also the next person on the dwindling list of people Zhu Yilong loves to die in his arms. I wish I could say that I found this tragic for reasons other than PLEASE GOD, LET ZHU YILONG HAVE AT LEAST ONE FUCKING FAMILY MEMBER LEFT ALIVE, but the best friend has done so much shit - including WATCHING IMPASSIVELY FROM HIS CAR while a feverish Zhu Yilong fainted in the rain - that I was mostly like, this might as well happen. Pretty sure he was also killed by the Japanese. There are a lot of evil Japanese spies around at this point?
They did get me though by playing a tragic pop song montage of all their gayest moments while Zhu Yilong holds him and they call each other brother for the last time, including that very first scene where Zhu Yilong dance-partner dipped him, reminding me that they made these expressions at each other then:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
LOOK AT THOSE FACES. GOD. Alexa, play Rolling in the Deep.
More to come.
