CUDDLING WITH SHANG-CHI
A/n: I can't stop thinking about this HC; I just know he gives the best cuddle time ever.
Warning: None! So much fluff, sugary sweets that rot your teeth (and silly moments).
Tumblr media
Shang-Chi is definitely a human heater.
Love to wrap his arm around you and kiss the back of your neck.
You guys would chit-chat about anything tbh.
The cuddle always ends with you and him having a nap.
And this is where the fun part begins lol
Listen, I know Shang-Chi (personally; source? Trust me bro) and I'm not going to romanticize everything about this man.
He falls asleep very fast and is a heavy sleeper.
He still holds you very close to him, not in a suffocating way, but in a snuggling way.
But Shang-Chi sleeps like a log, and on some days he will be slightly snoring.
He is always the big spoon at the start of cuddling and ends up as the little spoon when you guys wake up.
Specifically, when you wake up
Like I said, he is a heavy sleeper, and the fact that you're beside him makes him feel even more relaxed and happy, so that boy ain't waking up soon.
And if you do manage to wake him up, he will say "5 more minutes, babe" without opening his eyes.
Later on, you check on him, and he's like this 💀💀
Tumblr media
Nothing can beats cuddling time with Shang-Chi tbh; it's not a big deal but just being in his presence is enough to make you feel safe.
Idk I feel his energy and vibe; I cannot explain it (and I'm a person who absolutely hates being touched).

Pairing: Xu Shangqi x f. reader
Genre: smut
Warnings: mentions of sex, hickies, scratches, amnesia, Vegas shenanigans, alcohol consumption, hangover, Shangqi being a tease, implied smut (plz let me know if I am forgetting any)
Summary: A trip to Vegas leads to you waking up to another man in your bed.
Word Count: 864
Notes: This started as a request from my bday sleepover almost a year ago 💀 and I lost inspo for it until I decided to take part in @the-slumberparty Warm-Up: One Word Drabble. Thank you Navy and Roo for hosting this sleepover and thank you Bri Bri for the request! Remember to reblog and comment if you enjoyed what you read 😊
word generated: club
request: 🎉 from the prompt list, specially the smutty ones, 15. “I know I should care about the reason why you’re naked in my bed, but I will just enjoy it for a moment.” and 29. “I’ll take it that you like what you see.” with Shangqi? 🫣 👀 - @hollandparkersx
Tumblr media
You woke up to a pounding headache and dry throat. But with your friends around, you knew that you would end up drinking more than you can handle and make even more crazy decisions. Speaking of your friends.
Oh shit, what time was it?
The alarm clock on the side of your bed flashed 11:30am. You groaned, massaging your temples.
Well, so much for brunch at The Cosmopolitan.
In annoyance, you snatched your phone from the nightstand. Turning it on, you read a message from your best friend.
Sorry, hun! Was gonna wake you up but then we saw you snuggled up to that hottie from the club last night. Don’t worry, we’ll bring you something when we come back. Have fun with your man 😘 Lmk if you need more of those XL condoms 😉
What the fuck was she-
Oh…
On the opposite side of the queen sized bed was a naked man, whose body looked like it was sculpted like Michaelangelo himself. Not to mention, red scratch marks trailed down his back as if a rabid animal attacked him. That couldn’t have been your doing…right?
He began to roll over, exposing his equally sculpted chest and abs that was littered in hickies and kiss marks. Your eyes widened when you realized the lip stains on his body matched the shade of your lipstick from last night. As you wiped the side of your mouth, your smeared lipstick appeared on your fingertips. Finally awake, the man stared at you, leaning against his propped arm. You tried not to stare at his bulging bicep, but he caught on as he smirked.
“Good morning, sweetheart,” the man slurred with a low, sexy morning voice that was richer than the coffee you craved to cure your hangover. His eyes scanned your bare torso, smirking as you quickly covered yourself.
“No need to be embarrassed, sweetheart,” he chuckled and you watched his chest rise and fall. “I already know you look beautiful naked.” Your cheeks heated up and you slowly let the blanket fall in your lap.
“I know I should care about the reason why you’re naked in my bed, but I will just enjoy it for a moment.”
The man laughed again. “Well you and I got pretty drunk last night and I guess one thing led to another…”
Now your memories were coming back to you. You and your friends went club hopping on the strip, and you met the guy in bed with you on the bus ride there. While you were still sober, you and he chatted over how you were in Vegas for your friend’s birthday, and he was there to get over some family issues he dealt with in the past month.
By the time you got to the club, he paid for you and your friends' drinks. You basically left both of your groups to dance with each other but would still follow each other on each ride to the different clubs. At the end of the night, you and he went back to your room while both of your friend groups stayed behind to find a place to eat. The rest of the night with him was still a blur but it was pretty clear that you both slept with each other. Only thing was, you forgot his name.
“I’m sorry,” you started, “but can you remind me of your name please?”
“Don’t sweat it. It’s Shangqi.” You nodded and then gave him your name.
“I remember your name, sweetheart.” Shangqi smiled. “Surprised you forgot mine when you were screaming it all night long.”
You clenched your jaw as you grew wet between your legs. The urge to pounce on him was strong, especially with the way he stretched across the bed. Your gaze automatically landed on his groin that hid underneath the bed sheet.
“I’ll take it that you like what you see,” Shangqi teased once he caught you staring. You curled your lips inward as your face warmed up. He decided to change the subject to spare you of your embarrassment.
“Got any plans for today?” Shangqi asked.
“I was supposed to go to brunch with my friends but seeing that they found us sleeping together, they decided it was best to leave me behind.” Shangqi gave you an apologetic look, feeling bad that he kept you from your friends. You reassured him, “Don’t worry though, I had a great time last night. I mean, I don’t remember everything that happened, but I know it was fun.”
“Yeah, we went through like 5 condoms last night.” He picked up an opened condom packet, causing your breath to hitch when you realized it was a gold XL packet like your friend mentioned in the text.
You huffed out a flustered breath. “Wow, I guess there is a lot more that I don’t remember from last night.”
Shangqi’s next words turned you into a puddle. “Want me to jog your memory, sweetheart?”
You bit your lip as your thighs rubbed together to ease the growing need in your core. God, this man made it extremely impossible to resist him. “Yeah, help me remember every single detail.”

The Golden Dagger Club
Tumblr media
Pairing: Shang-chi x symbiote!reader
Word Count: 2145
You were just starting to repair the damages of a recuperating career and then the Blip happened. You were dusted away for five years and appeared back into your shitty apartment – your old shitty apartment that was occupied by someone else – and were left with nothing. Your clothing and furniture were all thrown away and your renewed show was trashed because everyone still alive was trying to cope with the loss of loved ones.
To those that stayed, you were considered lucky. Is it lucky to have nothing to come back to? The banks refused to help and getting any loans needed minimum of five years of income. Obviously that’s impossible as you were dusted for all five of those years making the institution useless. No one was willing to hire either as you were often overqualified or lacked any recent experience in the workforce.
Unlike some of the others who also disappeared, you didn’t have a family to help you adapt to the new culture that flourished whilst you were gone. There was still a semblance of the old but you were on your own.
Waiting was the worst. The United Nations were scrambling to provide provisions, documents, and other essentials for those who came back. It was a real shit show and at times, made you wish you never came back.
You had to worry about scavenging enough food for Venom or else it’s your organs that’ll be on the menu and you want your organs to remain intact and uneaten. You also don’t want to watch Venom bite someone’s head off again. You had to work fast as Venom was most likely going to starve and the government wasn’t working fast enough.
You heard murmurs of an underground tournament that pays very well for winning contestants. You weren’t a stranger of questionably immoral activities. You and Venom needed this. It was a saving grace in the waiting game of darkness. The United Nations were behind on provisions and housings, and you couldn’t wait for the miracle of them hurrying along the process.
So you left. The world didn’t need to know you were back, undusted and alive. It had moved on without you and there was no point in sticking around. The world would believe you were the unlucky ones to be at the wrong place during the Snap.
The world would get to learn of the existence of Venom, see the both of you as more than a blurry black figure from security cameras. See the two of you reappear after your hiatus. Your reappearance will be on that podium, hundred of eyes on you, seeing you, and cheering for you.
You had arrived to your brand new start. A new beginning to the end of a shitty chapter. “Welcome to the Golden Daggers Club! We’re a multi-platform global operation. Every fight live streamed on the dark web. Thousands of viewers placing bets as we speak.” The ringmaster, Jon Jon, explained as he handed you the sign up sheet. You read carefully, not wanting to be screwed over in the end, and when you deemed everything acceptable you signed on. It was fast and easy. Pen on paper and suddenly a new door opened.
There must’ve been hundreds of people in the unfinished building. Small cells, containing smaller fights, lead up to the giant podium where the grander fights and higher betting stakes take place. Within the club, you had to earn your place. Starting in those small cells and work your way up to become a favorite.
Your first opponent was no one memorable. They were enhanced to some degree but nothing remotely close to be able to take the two of you down. It was almost too easy but Venom adored the attention they’d garnered. On the other side of the cell were many onlookers, wanting to see more of the alien creature. It was itching more for fights, more advanced opponents, and scoring chocolate money. The club loved Venom. The fame and attention caught the curiosity of the club’s founder.
Xu Xialing was cold, complex, and a fighter. Her coldness was strictly targeted to men but once she saw the person beneath Venom, she’d lighten up around the two of you. You became her friend. You’d learn bits and pieces of her past while you shared yours. She’d given you a chance to start anew even if she didn’t know it. You felt like you owed her for providing a way to provide for Venom in a way your old job couldn’t. You and Venom took it upon yourselves to take out the trash, people who were trying to shut her operation down. The club meant so much to people and you didn’t want anyone to shit on the empire she’d built.
It was a night like any other. Bets were placed and the money just kept coming. The bar was filled as always and Venom was itching for its turn. “Take it easy on the chocolates, it’s about to be your turn.” You were currently watching the fight between Abomination, who was broken out of prison by his opponent, and the current Sorcerer Supreme, Wong. Wong seemed overwhelmed at first but managed to get Abomination to punch themselves.
“I’ve worked up an appetite.” Venom grunted as they bit the whole chocolate bar in its entirety. You could feel it buzzing with excitement.
Wong had won his fight and you were walking towards the main stage. “Doing what, sitting?” You replied as Venom’s pitch black skin covered you fully. Your thin arms concealed by its large muscles and build. No one in the crowd would ever guess who was underneath its skin.
The name of your opponent was called Flux. You had seen his fights before, seen him climb up ranks. You nor Venom were worried though. You’d let Venom take full control as it was its moment not yours. Venom tore onto the stage, hyping up the crowd, and waited for the fight to begin. The lights, the cheers, and the overwhelming anticipation riddled your being. It was exhilarating and you couldn’t wait for Venom to have the time of its life.
Flux wasn’t overpowered by much. Having superhuman strength, stamina and durability assists in keeping up with you and Venom. You’d been lucky no one has caught on to your weaknesses. As Venom controlled your body, you thought about how different your life had become and how thankful you were for being the right match for Venom. Feeling the immense happiness originating from it makes you happy. You knew Venom felt miserable hidden within your body, not allowed to stretch till night fell. Here in the club, it didn’t matter. Almost every fighter had some enhancement that made them different from everyone else. Had skills most didn’t possess.
Once the fight was over, the club’s staff members dragged Flux away towards the locker room. Venom, after celebrating its win with the crowd, followed afterwards. A giant teeth-filled grin dwelled on its face until its skin disappeared into your body.
You opened your designated locker and pulled out a box of chocolates and a 12 pack of diet soda. Opening them one by one you feed Venom by placing them into its mouth and congratulating them on its win while you consume the diet soda. In moments like these Venom resembled a puppy. Craved for your attention and wanted to feel loved.
You’d notice Jon Jon speaking to someone you’d only seen on your phone. The Bus Boy video that’s been dominating the internet. Venom had dismissed the guy as he wasn’t anything special except for maybe his delicious brain but you didn’t want to find out.
“[Reader], Venom,” Jon Jon yelled, “the boss wants to talk!” The guy next to him watched curiously at the Venom head appearing out of your side.
“If anyone steals even one chocolate or soda, I’ll bite your head off and feast on your organs.” Venom made sure to show off its teeth to the remaining contenders before going to Xialing’s office. You sat down on a chair waiting for her to arrive. Jon Jon left the dubbed Bus Boy in her office as well. He stayed standing, not knowing what to do. He was nervous, that was evident, and a bit awkward.
“Do you know who we are supposed to meet?” He didn’t know how to talk to you or Venom. If he were being honest, Venom kinda scared him. The threats given did not help at all. “I need to find my sister. Do you know her, Xu Xialing?” You noticed he kept a white tissue around his nostrils. The metallic smell of blood allowed you to know the reason why.
You stayed quiet not knowing the reason as to why he was asking. Knowing he was in her workplace, she’ll show herself eventually.
She walked in, taking her place behind her laptop.
“You run this place?” He talked in Mandarin.
“I own it.” She replied back.
Another woman was let in by Jon Jon, counting the stack of cash as she walked into the room. She was adorable when she was caught red handed. Having bet against the man, her friend apparently. “Did you bet against me?”
“No.” She lied. “I bet on that Venom dude earlier.” In an attempt to change the subject, she turned the attention on you and Xialing, “Hi Xialing and stranger. I’m Katy. You’re, like, such a badass. Everything that you do is, like, so cool. That was really cool.” She walked towards one of the seats next to her friend, which you still did not have a name for.
“This is [Reader].” Xialing replied, “The Venom dude from earlier.”
Katy gasped excitedly, “No way! I thought Venom had more muscles. Love the costume by the way. What fabric do you use?” She shook your hand frantically and laughed, “Your fight was so amazing. You made me a lot of money.”
You had never integrated with someone who had so much shameless confidence. She had seen you and Venom fight and she was treating you like a hero. Most run away at the sight of the two of you. It was a nice change of scenery. “Alien, I guess? Venom come out and say ‘hello’ to a fellow fan.”
“A fan…” He muttered as he moved his head towards her, “So unafraid, so courageous. You shall not be eaten.”
She chuckled nervously, “Thank you.”
“I like your pants.” Xialing turned the conversation towards herself.
Katy blushed, “Thank you. Thanks. Yeah.” She was obviously flattered by the compliment as she smoothed out her yellow pants.
“What do you want?” The coldness of Xialing's voice appeared suddenly. A certain sharpness you had never heard, finally making its existence known.
“The Ten Rings ambushed us in San Francisco.” San Francisco was the place where you once lived. The tomb of the life you once had.
“I saw the video.” Everyone had seen the video. It became a viral phenomenon which was rare as it raced against hero and alien sightings, and meet and greets with international heroes.
“They took my pendant. They’re gonna come for yours next.” You had learned about the pendant Xialing never took off as it was a gift from her mother. To learn he shared the same or similar pendant must mean only one thing. “I don’t know what he wants with them, but we both know it can’t be good.”
“You know what he said to me when he left?” You heard this story only once. It was a painful memory of abandonment and the loss of a sibling. Not in death, but in spirit. Lost of hope while living in the fragments of an once happy family. “‘I’ll be back in three days.’ And after three days, I went to our mom’s shrine and waited. Three days turned into a week, a week turned to a month, and a month turned to six years. That’s how long it took me to realize I didn’t need him any more. I built this place on my own. I didn’t need you then, and I don’t need you now.”
“I volunteer to eat him.” Venom liked Xialing. She snuck chocolates to it and was the first person, who wasn’t [Reader], to not be afraid of it. She gave you and it a home. “I’ll make it painful.” He licked his lips to scare Xialing’s brother even more.
Xialing smiled at Venom. It was the thought that counted and Venom meant well. He inched away from you and asked, “Then why would you send me the postcard?”
“What postcard?”
He got up from his seat and reached into his pockets. He slowly walked towards her before handing it to her.
“I didn’t send you this.” After she spoke those words, everything went to shit.

currents swept you out (high tide came and brought you in) [shang-chi x fem!reader]
Tumblr media
Almost a year later, but the muse came. (Sorry but also not sorry! xo)
I love all the melancholy and weight in Shang-chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. It's something I tried to explore here but I'm (of course) unsure if that was conveyed well.
Also shoutout to the sweet anon who asked about a part 2 to i'll be getting over you my who life many months ago! It kept some of my motivation for this up and kept me from deleting the draft.
Anyways, I love Shang-Chi and I would love to see more writing for him!!!
Please like, comment, and reblog! xo
+++
You think you catch glimpses of him throughout the years. A mirage of his figure around the corner, in a shadowed hallway. When you lay outside among the trees, you swear you see a vision of his face as the sun shines down on you. In the brief moments where the quiet becomes too much at the compound, you glance over your shoulder to see if he’s waiting for you, like he did before when you would sneak around for a quick word or a forbidden touch.
But Shang-qi is not there anymore, not here at all, and you don’t see him anywhere. He feels everywhere but you also know he is nowhere you can reach. Nowhere you can go. He cannot appear to you, even when that’s the only thing you want.
He is a ghost that lingers, but he is a ghost nonetheless.
And when you finally escape the compound and head for Ta Lo, you resolve to leave his ghost where it belongs: in the past.
You aren’t expecting to see Shang-qi in Ta Lo when he finally comes. You aren’t expecting to see him at all. Nan had told you that they had prepared for both his and Xialing’s arrival, but you doubted that he would ever come.
You are not even part of the welcoming group when his company rolls up in the car. First treated as a hostile group, then welcome like family. Your duties keep you physically away but the longing in your heart pulls at you no matter the distance you happen to keep from Shang-qi or Xialing.
You long to see his face, to watch as his eyes light with recognition (if, in fact, he did remember you at all). An ache deepens, and the pulling in your heart becomes slightly painful. You decide you don’t know what will be worse: living with the pain in your heart and leaving him alone or being in his presence after fifteen years of absence and wondering and grief.
When you feel your heart has gathered enough courage, you go to find him. Though the scenery is much different, for a moment you are reminded of when you would look for him at just fourteen years old, willing to risk what felt like it all at the time just to see him transiently.
The teenage love you for him that felt so all-consuming now just makes you feel forlorn.
You sit down next to him and greet him, "Shang-qi."
He turns his face and looks at you. It takes a second but there is a little surprise amidst his recognition. There is something else, too, something deeper. Something that you may not have words for but you understand all the same. A tenderness and vulnerability is there, but also shadows and fog. The rawness of what he felt fifteen years ago has dimmed with age and grief
"It was a long time ago when we last saw each other..."
"I didn't even know if you were still alive." He shakes his head and clasps his hands together on his lap.
"I found my own way," You smile, leaning in to his space before retreating.
There is a brief silence that elapses. One filled with a strange, awkward sense of peace. Or maybe comfort.
"I have heard you are trying to find your own."
"That's one way of putting it." His brow furrows and his eyes take on a different kind of shine. It's not as light as it was.
There is a gap of fifteen years in which you both lived without each other. Whatever innocent little thing you shared with him before he left to make another life for himself has been overshadowed and forgotten for things far more substantial.
For a moment the teenage girl in your heart cries. She wonders if you will ever know his lips on yours or his hands in your hair or a smile meant only for you. It is all she has ever wanted. Adult you, however, knows that the chasm between then and now is something that may not ever be able to be bridged between the two of you. And though Shang-qi is sitting beside you now, you recognize that you may never get to find what was lost so suddenly fifteen years ago.
Shang-qi may never stop being a ghost that haunts all your what-ifs and maybes.
“You were so heavy,” Your hands close around his. “So hard. Brittle. When I was younger, until you left the compound, all I wanted was to help you bear your burdens, but I know now that you wouldn’t have let me. If I asked you now, I think you still wouldn’t let me.”
Shang-qi doesn’t say anything, but you can tell from his eyes that he’s listening. He’s always listening. But his muscles are still tense, his shoulders tight. Still listening but withholding at the same time. Always withholding.
“I know I can’t solve this for you — whatever it is you are trying to fix. I can’t do any of this for you; you must do it for yourself,” You remove your hands from their place over his and expel a deep breath. “But I hope you know you can lay some of what you carry down.”
It is still quiet when you stand from your seated position next to him, but the quiet has transformed. It’s no longer peaceful for comfortable or familiar, but solemn and weighty. No matter how much you may wish to, you cannot untangle Shang-qi’s knots for him. You cannot bridge the gap between the present and past for the both of you. You can only decide to do it for yourself and and hope that he meets you halfway.
“Shang-qi,” It takes a moment, but he tilts his head up and his eyes meet yours, “I know who you are. I’ve never forgotten. But you seem to have, and what we — I — want is for you to remember.”

Day Out
Shangqi x Reader
A/N: So… many… self-indulgent… stuff…👁👁 Katy’s in here too but for admin sake, I’ll put it under Shangqi tags!
Genre: PG-13 (relatable stuff?)
Notes: Headcanons on how Shangqi (and Katy) would take you out to de-stress because we all know this duo is definition of FUN! And I really needed this 🫠
Tumblr media
Fridays. You loved Fridays. Not just because work ended, but you got to spend time with the people you cared about the most.
That also means letting your hair down and not giving a damn what people thought.
Leaving your workplace, you see two familiar faces waving excitedly at you, much to the amusement of your colleagues.
Shangqi takes you to a bbq joint where the meat was absolutely sizzling when placed on the grill. He was still very amazed at how much you could eat.
Karaoke nights! Plus points for Katy who brings honey lemon drinks made by her Grandma because the three of you are going to sing until you hack your lungs out!
Of course on some weeks, you appreciated quieter days and the duo absolutely respected that.
Shangqi takes you to a library with wonderful rooftop views and great beanbags to sit on and get lost in novels for hours.
Dinner is still in order though as the three of you share hot pot (which is excellent on rainy days).
Not all work days are fantastic, let’s put it out there. When the duo sees your forced happy expression, they know it’s time for a heart to heart talk.
You don’t hesitate to share with them your insecurities and fears of being incompetent.
Trial by error - that’s what Katy tells you. It’s basically her motto as she to tries to find her way in life when everyone else seemed to be doing fine.
Despite being raised by a literal warlord, Shangqi still feels a little intimidated standing next to mutants and eternals. So he gets it on a… superhero level.
But he does not minimize your worries!!!
Sometimes you cry, and by the time you do, you feel better and not like the whole weight of the world is sitting on your heart.
You apologize sheepishly every time even though they are your friends but they won’t even hear a word.
“Just let it all out girl!” Katy tells you. “If you say sorry one more time, you’re gonna have to drink up.”
Shangqi promises you that when you manage to take time off (or if you’re like me - ending internship), the three of you will have an awesome holiday of your choice!
He doesn’t tell you that it’ll be courtesy of Wong “Airlines”😬 where you don’t have to sit in a cramped space for 12 hours.
You and Katy are already deciding on where to go. Needless to say, you are very invested on that beach holiday.
Time to recover and kick some ass! - Katy’s words yet again as they send you back home after a night of de-stressing.
Tagging peeps who may need this in the future:

“So, who wants to go first?”
The tension-filled silence only made things worse as soon as Wenwu gazed expectantly into the eyes of his ‘guests’. Shangqi’s sister glanced at them with a bored expression as she used the chopsticks to play with her food.
The only thing anchoring Y/N to the present was Shangqi holding her hand at her side under the table which covered a variety of foods.
Unsatisfied with the group not showing a reaction, Wenwu rested his arms against the table, putting his bracelets on full display. In Y/N’s head, she couldn’t help calling them that, knowing how much it bothered Wenwu when she dubbed them like that out loud. That thought alone put a smile on her face.
Y/N slowly turned her head to gaze at the man, only to feel his inquisitive stare on her already.
“Y/N, how are your ribs feeling by the way?”
Shangqi’s face hardened at the reminder of her injury before Y/N felt his fingers caressing her hand in comfort.
Y/N smirked, trying to get a rise out of rigid terrorist leader. “Oh, I’ve never been better. Nothing beats having your bracelets hit against the side of my body with a lethal force. You should try it some time.”
“Don’t call them ‘bracelets’, child,” Wenwu spoke slowly with narrowed eyes.
Xialing, who was sitting opposite them, chuckled under her breath. “I like this one,” she said before pointing her chopsticks at her and turned back to her meal.
“You tried to kill her,” Shangqi threw in, with simmering anger in his voice. In any other situation his protectiveness would be flattering or even arousing, but the ache at her side and the insidious situation they were in, took over her mind more.
“Don’t be dramatic. A Black Widow knows how to fend for herself after all.”
Y/N exhaled heavily. She was still processing the literal bomb Wenwu just dropped before she even comprehended that Shangqi let go of her in shock. Her stomach clenched once the realization hit her that Wenwu managed to hit her where it would hurt the most. The life she built for herself. The life she built together with Shangqi.
Y/N swallowed thickly as she turned her head to look at Shangqi pleadingly. Silently begging him to look at her.
Despite the silence taking over the room, the blood rushed to her head, making her feel all woozy from the incoming ringing taking over. With her heartbeat racing nervously in Y/N’s chest, she could feel Xialing’s intrigued stare on her.
“Wait, you’re a Black Widow, for real? Like, Natasha Romanoff-Black Widow?” Katy asked with a hoarse voice made of surprise and reverie. Y/N didn’t know whether her friend’s admiration was for her former status as a Black Widow or her connection to Romanoff.
The mere mention made Y/N abruptly face her with a venomous glare. “Don’t mention that name.”
Satisfied with that outcome, Wenwu laced his fingers together. Smug apathy took over his features. It made Y/N wonder what horrors he had to face in his immortal life to gain that perspective that people were just disposable.
“To be honest, I knew you meant something to my son and … you were just a means to an end. I didn’t really care in what kind of state you’d end up.”
Y/N leaned forward in her chair. “Just admit it,” she glared at Wenwu with her next words, “you send my sisters after me, you’re trying to have me killed.”
The stillness of Shangqi’s body was starting to worry her as her anxious eyes met the side of his head. “Shangqi? Please look at me,” Y/N begged him openly, knowing how rare it was for her to admit her vulnerabilities. To earnestly admit her feelings.
Shangqi stubbornly faced the table and settled his arms on the table, openly defying her wish for closeness. Shangqi was all about showing affection - it was one of the things that unsettled her upon meeting him. How the Red Room upbringing had enforced her to remain unfeeling, not to let anyone get close to her and never to trust anyone. It was strange how she craved Shangqi’s sign of affection by a simple touch.
He merely clenched his jaw, refusing to face her again.
Wenwu asked with an innocent voice, “Oh, you didn’t tell him about that? That’s harsh.”
Tumblr media
It turned out a ‘family’ dinner could turn out even more awkward than previously thought. If Wenwu’s monologue about the Mandarin’s impersonation and appropriation of the Ten Rings wasn’t bad enough, Shangqi’s cold exterior was.
Y/N felt like she was on the outside looking in of this intimate and most tension-fueled event. Her skin was burning from Shangqi not even sparing her another glance.
Y/N clenched her jaw and focused her eyes straight ahead. Astonishment hit her once Y/N met the soft-eyed glance of Xialing as Shangqi’s sister let sympathy shine through like a blanket.
“I’ll let you freshen up,” Wenwu cleansed his fingers with a light-colored napkin that complimented his dress shirt and casually threw it on the table before standing up, “and I will meet you all in my office to talk about things.”
The moment that Wenwu’s presence was gone, and the heavy tension left with him – save for Shangqi’s which left a pang in her chest - the body language of everyone changed dramatically.
“Guys, please tell me we’re not sticking around for this lunatic. No hard feelings, man,” Katy admitted with honesty.
“None taken,” Xialing and Shangqi retorted simultaneously.
“And no. We’ll see what his plan is and then we’re getting the hell out of here.” Her brother assured them.
Tumblr media
The escape from the Ten Rings headquarters turned out messier and even more fantastical than Y/N had expected. Getting her gear back, discovering the former Mandarin imposter, escaping with the former Mandarin imposter through a magical maze and reaching the magical dimension of Ta Lo.
A small part of Y/N believed that Xialing reveled in the misery of her older brother when she took the seat by the door, effectively squeezing Y/N into a tight space with Shangqi. Being able to feel every sharp turn - or more like his strong muscles, as they tensed with every colliding touch.
The fact that this was such a fantastical place wasn’t the only factor to make Y/N feel so out of place. It was the distance Shangqi kept between him and her. It felt like Y/N was merely tolerated for the ride and she hated being the passive force.
The cooing noise under her fingertips pulled her out of her thoughts and made Y/N look down to one of the fantastical animals which habituated this home territory that had slowly inched towards her as she ruminated on the patch of grass. Upon further observation it appeared to be a hybrid of a red-golden winged lion. Absentmindedly, Y/N stroked the soft feathers of its wings and watched its wide golden eyes settle on her as it snuggled deeper along her calves.
“You seem to have a magical touch.”
The sudden voice made Y/N look up in curiosity.
Xialing was wearing her new silver-black armor as she inched towards her with casual steps - a description she wouldn’t have associated with the rigid sister. If anything, due to her upbringing, it gave Y/N the impression that Xialing tried not to spook her.
Shrugging her shoulders, Y/N gave her new feathery friend her full attention.
“I never thought I’d enter a world where I ever encountered a Pixiu,” Xialing whispered almost in awe, like this animal was something to worship. Her eyes didn’t leave the animal’s form as she knelt down and sat cross-legged.
“Do you know the story behind them?” Her fingers cautiously stroked the back as its wings flapped from the care it was receiving.
Curiosity shone in Y/N’s eyes as she looked up, bonding over the purring hybrid. “Not that well-versed in Chinese Mythology,” she admitted.
“The males are a symbol of wealth, while the females are supposed to ward off evil. It seems you found a female,” Xialing explained calmly, just in time to have another dragon lion get closer and willingly snuggled at her hips before nudging her with his head. This one had a different color though, in blue-and-gold feathers.
Y/N raised a teasing eyebrow. “And you’re saying I’m the one with the magic touch?”
Xialing smirked indulgently. “Usually, animals shy away from me.”
“Is that supposed to mean something? That they have some sort of instinct to keep away from you?”
“Probably my own inhibition to get close.”
“It’s all about training, Xialing. You can train or manipulate your body for anything.”
As soon as the word ‘training’ left Y/N’s mouth, Xialing cleared her throat. “Speaking of training, is it true that the Red Room program only trained women?”
Y/N exhaled heavily and dropped her head. The moment the female Pixiu sensed the loss of her touch, she jumped into her lap, making her jolt with a humph.
Absentmindedly, she stroked the hybrid’s stomach which felt strangely furry than feathery. “I was wondering when someone would mention that part.” She inhaled deeply and gazed into the sky. “Girls,” Y/N corrected her, feeling that the distinction was pretty important. “They train young girls to turn them into assassins.”
“How old were you when they−?”
“Took me? About 7. It’s just easier to mold kids into their perfect killers and manipulators when they’re still young and … pliable? Simpler to play with their minds when they’re still easy to impress. To shape us into what the instructors wanted us to become.”
Xialing’s eyes shifted, trying to come up with words. “I’m not good with comforting people.”
In that regard - of wearing your heart on your sleeve - Xialing was certainly nothing like her brother.
Y/N cleared her throat. “I don’t … want you to?”
Xialing nodded her head mechanically, rocking her upper body back and forth. “That’s great to hear. That’s cool.” She pressed her lips together before awkwardly adding with an exhaling breath, “Cool.”
A pregnant pause settled in the air before Xialing asked, “So, uh, what’s your name again?”
Y/N snorted at her crude social skills, yet still replied, “Y/N” while waving to her chest.
“Xialing, the forgotten sister.”
Y/N raised her eyebrows at the offhanded remark and felt utterly torn between wanting to defend Shangqi and knowing how much the sister was at a disadvantage with the way her own father barely even glanced at her at his compound.
Y/N sighed and glanced when the flutter of wings touched her legs. “Would you prefer it if I defended Shangqi or you?”
Xialing sent her a side-eyed glance which was filled with annoyance. “You know, as much as I don’t want to be judgmental−”
“I’m getting the feeling that you’re still going to.”
She continued as if Y/N hadn’t said a thing, “−but what do you see in him again? You’re like way out of his league.”
Y/N scoffed with laughter which turned almost wheezing.
“Who am I kidding? You’re like leagues ahead. You're not even playing the same sport.”
“I love the vote of confidence.”
“I mean, who would have thought? A Black Widow and my brother? Talk about mind-blowing.”
“That would imply that we were on good terms, you know, since we’re not. Your brother has been giving me the silent treatment ever since we arrived at this place.”
“Listen…” The Pixiu purred underneath her fingertips while Xialing stroked the feathers of the male creature, “we don’t have time for regrets. As I much as I can’t stand my brother sometimes, you two need to have that conversation, before mayhem ensues. The way I know my father, it is going to come. Before it’s too late.”
Astonishment shone in Y/N’s eyes at her profound words, seeing the other woman in a different light. “Xu Xialing, I wouldn’t have pegged you as a romantic.”
Xialing rolled her eyes. “I’ll deny everything when someone asks,” she threatened lightly with glaring eyes. Xialing tilted her head and pursed her lips in mock contemplation. “Or I could kick your ass right here, right now.”
Y/N chuckled. “You’re funny. Shangqi should’ve told me he had a funny sister.”
“I’m serious.”
Y/N gazed into her brown eyes. “You think you could beat me in a fight?”
“I could ask you the same thing,” Xialing mused thoughtfully before sending Y/N a teasing smirk. Her eyes shone with a daring glimmer which had the intended effect when a jolt coursed through her body.
“I know you’re just trying to get to me, but challenge accepted.” With these words, Y/N stood up from her cross-legged position. “Try to keep up, would you?”
Xialing sneered. “That’s funny.”
Tumblr media
“You’re cheating,” Xialing stated with a raspy voice.
A snort left her lips. “I would hardly call this cheating.”
Her hand was still rubbing the sore spot on her throat before Xialing sent her a judgmental stare. “You just punched me in the throat. You seem to have a loose definition of cheating.”
Y/N smirked. “You say that now and you haven’t even met my friend yet. She basically created the whole playbook of cheating. How do you think I survived your father? By being honest?”
The mention of her father made her spring into action. Xialing leaped in the air with her hand clenched into a fist.
It made a thumping sound against her wrist to block the attack which had a flurry of fists to follow. Y/N grunted before she switched back into strike mode and hit Xialing’s face with the back of her elbow, making the other woman let out a pained grunt.
A taken-aback gasp pulled her out of the moment before Y/N looked back and saw that they had lured quite a crowd of onlookers watching the spectacle. Including Katy who covered her mouth with her hands.
Shangqi standing next to his best friend, with his arms crossed over his chest and a frown on his face, made Y/N hesitate for a second.
It was all Xialing needed to trip her feet. Y/N fell backwards, with Xialing’s triumphant grin on her face as she was standing above her.
Xialing’s pride soon shifted into dread.
Y/N scissored her legs around Xialing’s neck. Pulling her opponent towards her until they were face-to-face, Y/N kept her arm in a tight lock, pressing against her pressure point on her wrist.
“Yield,” Y/N hissed through gritted teeth.
“You first,” came Xialing’s reply.
“Five more seconds and you will faint; with the way I’m pressing on your wrist. You’re probably feeling fuzzy already.”
Xialing blinked twice. “It’s a tie,” she grunted with wheezing breaths. The chokehold and the grip on her wrist were probably slowly getting to her.
“Agreed.” Despite the knowledge how Y/N could render her immobile, she released her thighs around her neck.
Xialing inhaled deeply before grunting. “Guess we need to do that again.”
Y/N’s head did a double-take from her statement. “Come again?”
Xialing squatted onto her knees before straightening into a standing position. Y/N looked up, just as Xialing’s hand was offered at her eyelevel.
“I could use a capable sparring partner,” Xialing admitted with a soft smile – an expression which Y/N wouldn’t have expected coming from her.
She accepted her help in standing up and brushed a few sweaty strands away from her forehead. “You’re very optimistic for someone whose father is intending to bring about the end of the universe.”
Xialing shrugged, almost brushing her body against hers as she stepped closer. “What can I say? I believe in delayed gratification. Baby steps, you know?”
“Really? Wouldn’t have figured.”
Something moving in the side of her eye made Y/N turn her head to see the dark-haired head of Shangqi moving further away with brisk steps, with his arms clenched at his sides.
Y/N furrowed her brows and glanced in confusion at Katy, hoping for some answers. Her long dark hair whipped through the air to glance back at her friend before switching her gaze between Y/N and Xialing and mouthed, “I don’t know.”
Y/N sighed under her breath, but still felt her feet lingering.
“Talk to my brother. There’s still time to train for later,” Xialing acquiesced with a soft voice.
Y/N turned her head with the corners of her mouth pulling downwards, hating that Xialing wanted to be the voice of reason. Still, Y/N hesitated.
Xialing insisted though. “Come on. We don’t have the luxury to have regrets, remember? Or do you want me to kick your butt again?”
Y/N ignored the apparent lie and narrowed her eyes in thought, teasing, “I’d prefer to fight you instead, actually.” Than to face Shangqi, remained unsaid. Nonetheless, she groaned before slowly moving in the direction where Shangqi had wandered off to.
Y/N cursed her quickly beating heart in her chest once her eyes met the broad shoulders of the man who had shunned her from the minute of Wenwu’s seed of mistrust. Shangqi had sought refuge at some sort of shrine which honored his departed mother.
Nervously licking her lips, Y/N was careful not to disrupt the sentimental mood he was in when she softly spoke, “What was she like?”
“I don’t remember,” Shangqi uttered with a grunt.
What a load of crap.
Her eyes focused on the tenseness of his shoulders ever since he sensed her presence. “That’s a lie,” Y/N paused, letting it linger in the air, “I might have been taken by the operatives of the Red Room off the streets of Koronadal when I was a young girl, but I still remember my mother as I cling to any kind of memory, I still got left of her.”
Shangqi jerkily shook his head, almost like he was in denial. “I can’t do this.” He turned his body and walked with brisk steps in her direction, but he averted his eyes as he tried to escape her.
Y/N would have none of it when she deliberately stepped in front of Shangqi. “Can’t have this conversation? Tell me something, what bothers you more? The fact that I used to be a Black Widow or that you found out from your father?”
Shangqi exhaled heavily through his nose as he braced his hands on his waist. His eyes wandered around before he exhaled with a grunt, “I’m not – that’s not –” With a glare, he gazed directly into her eyes. “Were you ever going to tell me?”
Y/N felt heat rise in her, almost in provocation from Shangqi’s defensive tone.
Well, two could play this game.
“Were you?” she asked with a counterquestion while her eyebrows rose high and felt silently confirmed through Shangqi’s clenched jaw. “See? It wouldn’t have mattered who you were or who I was because that part of my life was over.”
Y/N narrowed her eyes in speculation before her voice shifted into a whisper, “You know, it’s strange. I didn’t blame you for who your father is, but still, I never thought you would be the one to judge me instead.”
Shangqi tilted his head, refusing to believe her innocence which strangely hurt before he taunted, “Kind of far-fetched though, isn’t it? A Black Widow getting together with the son of the most dangerous terrorist in the world. I mean, what are the chances?”
Her eyes widened.
“Wow, and I thought I had issues with trusting people.”
Shangqi crossed his arms. “Was any of it even real? What you told me?”
Y/N deflated with her next exhaling breath. “I never lied to you about that. How I’m … scared of crowds of people or that I’m sensitive to sounds. When you grow up in the Red Room where all the girls were only allowed to speak when the operatives allowed us to, you tend to … loathe some noises.”
Y/N snorted in derision. What was the point of all of this? “Maybe Yelena was right. I was fooling myself into thinking I could have a normal life. To share my life with someone, be happy. To forget who I was.”
Y/N stroked her arms, hating herself for being vulnerable like that in front of him. Dejectedly, she shook her head. “But what does it matter? Nothing I say is going to change your mind about me. Why bother?”
Remembering how much Y/N tried to stop Shangqi from leaving and realizing the irony of it as she attempted to go with a twist of her body.
The warmth against her lower arm caught her by surprise before she glanced down to find Shangqi had caught her arm as his hand lingered. “Wait. I don’t – I can’t – This is too much. I can’t think about … me and you when there’s literally the fate of the universe at stake.”
“I get it,” she sighed before ruffling her fingers through her hair. “Anyway, your sister is going to deny it when asked but she thought it’d be a good idea to have that talk.”
A smirk tugged at Shangqi’s lips. “Didn’t take Xialing for being a romantic.”
“Yes, it’s hard to believe.”
Inhaling slowly, Shangqi gazed at Y/N with a pondering expression. “How high are the chances that you’re going to leave this place and get back to San Francisco?”
Y/N tilted her head at the suggestion. “And accidentally bump into your father? Very unlikely, Shangqi.” She pursed her lips. “Only you would reject the help of a Black Widow.”
“I just want you safe. I don’t want you to get hurt because of me. I get it, you’ve been trained by the best of the best, but…”
Not having expected that, something softened inside Y/N at Shangqi’s confession. They weren’t exactly the best at being vulnerable, as much as Shangqi tended to wear his heart on his sleeve. At least one of them had to. Trying to make him feel better and to alleviate his worries, Y/N spoke softly, “I’m not that well-versed with the magic stuff, so don’t hold it against me for not wanting to fight on the front lines.”
Shangqi exhaled deeply. “That’s a relief. Just …” His hand lingered in the air, as it hovered a few inches above her cheek before he finally stroked her skin. Warmth blossomed from within her body at the familiar touch. “Promise me you’ll be careful.”
Feeling her cheeks redden, Y/N felt hypnotized by his dark gaze. “You too.”
“Promise me we’ll talk later.”
Y/N nodded once before she smiled fondly at Shangqi’s insistence. “I promise. See you on the other side.”
“Not if I see you first,” Shangqi whispered quietly.

This Change in Me 1/6
THEMES AND TRIGGER WARNINGS- affection, characters missing for periods of times
DISCLAIMER- I own no right to any characters or places associated with Marvel
I  had never really thought about all that goes into being a superhero. After all, it’s not like I’m a second grade teacher by day and a crimefighter by night. Beyond the uniform and the spandex is something more, as I am starting to realize- motivation.
Beyond the powers, the serums and the special abilities lies determination- a willingness to take a risk . To fight for what is right, and for those you love.
I’ve never felt that. I’ve always had an admiration for heroes, but never the desire to be one.
Until  a week ago.
‘’How does a whole team,’’ Cassandra begins, her words painted with impatience, Southern accent getting thicker as her dark eyebrows furrow, ‘’just… disappear>’’ Her words contain venom in them, acrylic nails tipping against the metal table as she wants for what we all are waiting for- a real answer.
‘’I’d love to know the same,’’ Rochelle begins, her brown eyes trained on Nick Fury.
In this room are the wives and girlfriends of the Avengers- Pepper Potts-Stark, Rochelle, Wilson , Cassandra Barnes, Laura Barton, and Alicia Rodriguez- Rogers. The girlfriends of Tony Stark, Sam Wilson, James Buchannan ‘’Bucky’’ Barnes, Clint Barton, and Steven Rogers, respectively.
‘’Ladies, I assure you that we are doing everything we can to locate them,’’ Fury attempts, earning himself a scoff from Cassandra.
‘’Would have been a lot easier if we’d gone with the back up system like I’d suggested,’’ Natasha doesn’t even look up from the computer that she is tapping away on, diligently searching for a signal from any of the men,
A week and a half Tony, Sam, Bucky, Clint, and Steve were sent on a mission. Realizing that they needed help, they called in reinforcements. That’s where Peter Parker and my boyfriend, Shang-Chi, come into play.
Shang-Chi and I  have been dating for three years. Him being an Avenger came at no surprise to me. After all, who hadn’t seen the viral video of ‘’bus boy’’? Meeting him and seeing a viral video of him, however, are two different things. Despite his very impressive fighting skills, Shang-Chi is very lovable, very kind, and very dependable. He’s always someone that you can count on, which makes me understand how he was added to the team.
It also  reinforces in my mind, yet again, how a simple day to simply be together and get a little shopping done for my classroom, turned into him getting called on a mission as back-up…
Only for you to find out that he’s missing three and a half days later.
‘’All I know is that I want my husband back, and I want him back now,’’ Alicia informs, ‘’They told you this mission was going to be dangerous, and you insisted without the proper back up. That’s on you. Now fix this mess.’’
The confidence and authority with which Alicia speaks is very much like the way that Steve speaks. It’s  more of a demand than a request, and Fury knows it just as well as I do. Her posture shows confidence and there’s no getting her to back down, which shouldn’t surprise me. After all, Steve met her as she trained new recruits, noting her firm but fair disposition.
At least, that’s what Shang-Chi told me as we made dinner together one night about a year ago, himself invested in the ins and outs of other people’s relationships.
‘’Alicia, we are doing everything er can to locate our team.’’
‘’They should not have been out there in the first place,’’ Pepper reminds, moving to sit next to Natasha, ‘’This is the last known location from three days ago Why weren’t we notificied the minute that they went missing?’’
‘’Do you think we’re going to contact you every single time they go missing? It’s part of the risk. It’s just never been this long,’’ Fury reminds, ‘’You know that.’’
‘’I want to know why you waited three and a half days,’ Laura beings before pointing at all of us, ‘’When they all have families.’’
Rochelle rubs her seven month pregnant stomach at that, ‘’The last time people just disappeared,  they were blipped. A giant alien crashed to earth again?’’
‘’Be real,’’ Cassandra  speaks again, folding her arms in front of her chest, ‘’And theny ou sent the kid, and her boyfriend out there? After you’d lost them? Did that seem wise yo uoi, Fury?’’
‘’You should know the risk associated. You are not that far removed from the field, agent,’’ Natasha begins,standing and stretching, ‘’But arguing is getting us nowhere. We are organizing a search team for them now, and that is why we have called you all in.’’
‘’We have an idea on how to locate them. However, sending in other members of the agency may alert them that they are there to rescue them. So I’ve thought of another idea.’’
Captain Marvel
‘’Wait, Ms.Marvel is coming here,’’ I pipe up, earning looks of distress and abit of annoyance from those around me, ‘’Sorry.’’
‘’You’re not the one who needs to be apologizing, sis,’’ Rochelle reminds you, ‘’So, Fury. What is this brilliant plan of yours?’’
‘’To spend the next few days training a group of highly capable individuals, ‘’ Fury says, ‘’Some experienced with this line of search and rescue, and others fairly new to it. But all with the same motivation- to find them.’’
Something in my stomach begins to turn, something similar to nervousness but without the usual side of nausea that I so often associate with THAT emotion.
‘’We thought who could be better to search timeout than the people that mean so much to them, and who they mean so much to,’’ Natasha brings an edge of nervousness to her statement, gently craving through her false sense of confidence.
‘’And who would that be,’’ you hesitate to ask, mouth dry as you feel that you already know the answers.
‘’Ladies… how do you feel about being temporary Avengers?’’

What's Behind and What's Before (ao3) - NyxEtoile, OlivesAwl katy/shang-chi M, 58k
Summary: “When are you going to get married?”
Had Waipo not asked him that daily for the last 5+ years he might have panicked. Instead, he responded the same way he always did. "We're just friends.”
Normally, she made noises and nodded. It was part of their routine, going on so long it was almost an in-joke. But this time she turned and stared at him. She looked exasperated, and like she knew he was lying. Somehow. She pulled the ladle out of the pot and pointed it at him. “If you get her pregnant and don’t marry her, I will haunt you from the afterlife.”
Of all the threats he'd had in the last week, that might be the most sincere. "I promise not to do that.”

protector- shangqi
pairings: xu shangqi x reader warnings: bruises, physical assault, asshole boss about: requested! (DA32) “are those bruises?” + (DA19) “touch her, and i’ll murder you.” a/n: my darling requester i am SO sorry. it doesn’t usually take me this long to finish a request, but i have been exhausted this week fro some reason, and i couldn’t figure out how to end this. i hope you enjoy anyway!
you can barely gather enough strength to push the door of your shared apartment open, weighed down by the bags under your eyes and the fact that you were supposed to leave work over two hours ago. your forehead knocks against the cool entrance of your home, eyes shut in emotional exhaustion as the key in your hand blindly tries to find the lock. you groan softly when you continuously miss it, hitting your head a few times in frustration. you’re barely lifting yourself off of the door, eyeing the lock, and aiming the key when the door swings open, your boyfriend standing in the frame with furrowed brows. “y/n?”
at the sight of him, you step into your apartment and press your face against his chest, loosely wrapping your arms around his waist as he returns the favor with a tighter grip, still a little confused as he shuts the door behind you. “shangqi,” you mumble out, words muffled by his chest, “i missed you,” you continue, nuzzling your nose against the soft material of his shirt.
he’d been gone the past few days for a mission, and while you would usually make a bigger deal out of his return--meaning balloons and some poorly made dessert that he’ll eat anyways and definitely not you, exhausted, and on the verge of frustrated tears--you had been so tired lately, and you were back home too late for anything, anyways.
“i missed you too,” shangqi trails off, pressing his lips to your head as a comfort that works. “are you okay?” he asks.
“i’m better now,” you shrug, completely honest considering the way you can feel the energy you’d lost at your job rushing back into you with the smell of shangqi. “‘don’t even think i need the nap i was gonna take when i came home.”
“are you sure? i don’t think it’ll hurt,” shangqi debates, his worries utterly clear in his tone.
you force a breathy laugh from your throat, nodding, “you trying to get rid of me?”
“never,” shangqi replies immediately. “but, i am trying to get you to maybe watch a movie with me?” he baits, knowing full well that there’s no point in arguing with you when you’re so stubborn, instead planning to put on one of the movies that never fails to make you fall asleep, if not only for you to rest a little.
“that,” you begin, lifting your head from his chest but not moving from your place in his arms. “sounds like a great idea,” you smile, pecking his lips before letting him pull you to the couch, where you sink into him again.
shangqi puts on the movie he remembers katie raving about, dramatically groaning at you each time you fell asleep. none of you had any idea what it was about it, but you were always knocked out cold by the first twenty minutes, less if you were as tired as you seemed to be.
you glance at him when you notice the movie he’s choosing, poking him, “shangqi…” you warn, catching onto his plan.
“what?” he feigns innocence, throwing his arm around you to pull you even closer, “‘felt like watching it. you know how great the ending is.”
you don’t. which is why the lie is so damning.
you only grumble and settle in beside him, basking in his warmth and pressing stray kisses to whichever place you can reach, happy to have him back. you’re asleep seven minutes in.
-
an hour later, you’re shimmying your shoulders in the kitchen, moving your hips to a song you hadn’t been able to get out of your head for a while before shangqi left. you’re making something for both you and him to eat--nothing too hard, of course; shangqi has made sure to assign you something you can’t burn, something you appreciate after the last time you’d almost burnt down the apartment.
shangqi is eyeing you from the hallway where he’d just come out of the bathroom, a small smile crinkling his eyes as he enjoys seeing you in your element, a welcomed difference to who you had been when you walked through the door. he walks up behind you, placing a gentle hand on your hip and another one on your stomach to turn you around, meeting the brightness of your smile once you meet his eye. you continue dancing distractedly, a wider grin taking up your face when he begins to dance, too.
you turn a little too fast and bump into a counter, wincing when your hip comes in contact with the marble and letting a small sound of pain slip out. shangqi frowns, watching your hand as it rubs at the covered wound. “what’s wrong?”
you lift up your shirt, scrunching your nose when you catch the colored skin underneath. rolling your eyes, you wave him off as you drop your shirt, “it’s nothing. accident at work, my boss accidentally pushed me when we were in the kitchen.”
the frown never completely leaves shangqi’s face, eyes drifting to the place where your bruise was throughout the rest of the night.
-
the next morning, you’re out of the bed and nearly at the door before shangqi is even waking up, the brunt of the mission hitting like a train by the time he’d let his head hit the pillow. you’re rushing inside the bedroom, scurrying around to look for something and say goodbye to your boyfriend when he wakes up. he’s barely awake, the world blurry around him when he catches handprint-shaped darkened skin around your wrist as you reach for something. you don’t note his distress as he sits up, examining the skin that had been fine before he’d left as you mumble an aha, getting ready to leave your boyfriend.
“okay, found it. i love you and i will see yo--”
“is that a bruise?” shangqi interrupts, voice serious and completely awake as he moves towards you, gently grabbing your arm to examine the injury closer.
you look down at your wrist, laughing dismissively way as you try to take your wrist back. “it’s nothing--”
“that’s not nothing, y/n. who did that to you?” shangqi demands, tone still kind but pleading.
you swallow, scoffing lightly with a playful smile, “it’s just an accident at work yesterday,” you begin, the excuse something he’d heard before, “he just grabbed me a little too hard--”
“who?” shangqi insists.
finally giving in, you sigh, “my boss. he was just in a bad mood, i’m honestly fine.”
“was he the same one who pushed you and gave you that?” shangqi asks, pointing at the place on your hip where another bruise resided.
“yes,” you admit after a second of stubborn silence, crossing your arms protectively over your chest.
“did you tell someone--”
“i’m fine.” you cut him off, “it was just a one-time thing, he was in a bad mood and he apologized right after.”
“y/n,” shangqi starts, grabbing the hand belonging to the unscathed arm, “please tell me if it happens again. i think you should go to someone higher-up than him with this anyways--” at the look on your face, he stops himself, “but, i know that you love your job and you're not going to do that, so i’m not going to force you to, but if this happens again--”
“i will.” you promise, “i’ll tell you or i’ll tell his boss. she’s really good about that kind of thing. but i need to go now.”
“okay,” shangqi sighs, not happy with the way you were going about it, but not wanting to force you into something you didn’t want. “i love you, have a good day.”
“i love you, too,” you say, kissing his forehead, “i’ll be back soon.” you wave at him before you leave, giving him a view of the bruise outlining your wrist.
it leaves him with an ugly taste in his mouth that he can’t seem to shake.
-
it’s almost your lunchtime when he notices you’d forgotten your wallet at the kitchen island, the memory of you bustling about in the morning as you looked for what he assumed was this. poking his tongue against his cheek, he decides to visit you at work to bring it to you, knowing you’ll probably need it to buy food, and if your asshole boss happens to be there… then why not take advantage of the opportunity to introduce himself?
he’s at your workplace in ten minutes, swinging around your sugar mommy wallet as he walks inside the building. he greets hans, the receptionist that already knows him by how many times he’s come in to eat with you, and makes small talk while he signs in before he’s able to go see you, face already brightening when he sees you in your element, practically glowing.
the smile that’s beginning to grow on his face disappears completely once your boss comes into the picture, harsh words he’s probably spewing at you making your face drop. shangqi speeds up, trying to listen to what your boss is saying when he suddenly grabs your injured wrist with an angry hand, pulling you closer and spitting words in your face.
shangqi isn’t sure how he got in the middle of both of you so quickly, hands already extended to shove him away from you and standing in front of you as a protective barrier, features contorted into a dangerous snarl.
“who are you? what the fuck are you doing in my building?” he barks, coming closer to the both of you. shangqi can feel your fingers tangling themselves in his shirt, but you don’t move away from him.
“no, what are you doing putting your hands on her?”
“i don’t think any of this concerns you--”
“i can assure you it does when you’re leaving bruises on my girlfriend.”
your boss’ eyes flit to you, settling on your still figure, “you went and complained? you pathetic---” he begins to lunge at you, an arm outstretched when shangqi suddenly pushes him against a wall before he can even touch you.
“touch her, and i’ll murder you.” shangqi growls, a promise laced in the cold tone you’d never even thought he had. his grip is tight around your boss’ neck, ironed shirt wrinkling with each passing second of shangqi’s tightening grip. you stand behind your boyfriend in shock, only used to the sweet man who would prefer trapping spiders to take them outside. you pull at his shirt, softly saying his name as a way of asking him to calm down.
with a final jostle, shangqi complies, putting your boss down and only glaring at him as he slinks away, proclaiming he’ll sue. he turns to you once your boss is gone, gentle hands reaching for the wrist that had just been in your boss’ grip. his fingers trace gently over the bruise, worried eyes replacing the angry ones he’d had just before. “are you okay?” shangqi asks, scanning your face and pulling you into his embrace. you nod, tightening your arms around him. “i swear, i’ll kill him. who does he think he is? if they don’t fire him, i swear i’ll bring it up to wong or banner or i’ll take care of it myself--”
“i’ve never seen you that mad,” you interrupt in a daze, slowly pulling away and searching the eyes that had been so furious seconds before, now soft and comforting as they observed you.
“i’ve never needed to be,” shangqi tells you, the hands that had been wrapped around your boss’ neck now curling around your waist to pull you closer again, “but when i saw him hurting you--”
“i’m okay,” you assure weakly. “i’m sorry i didn’t tell you about it,” you murmur into his chest, “i just didn’t want you to worry. i was trying to avoid all this.”
“worrying about you is my job, i’m supposed to make sure you’re okay, y/n.”
“okay,” you give in. “i’m sorry. i promise i’ll tell you if anything happens again--”
“oh, no, this isn’t going to happen again.” shangqi promises, pulling back to meet your eyes, “i’ll make sure of it. i’ll stay with you every day if i need to.”
“you won’t need to, i promise,” you vow, “but thank you for protecting me.”
shangqi swears it’s his honor.

Pas De Deux
pairing: Xu Shang-Chi x avenger!reader
warnings: language, sexual innuendos, pining, some fighting
notes: quite a few of you asked for more Shangqi and avenger!reader, so here’s a piece that continues their story from Healing. I’m hoping to slowly add on to the timeline between these characters, but for now enjoy :)
summary: A fight against you has Shang-Chi realizing he doesn’t know you as well as he thought he did.
Tumblr media
“So when do we get to fight bad guys and stuff?”
You can’t say you’re surprised to finally be asked this question, but it’s still relatively early in the morning, so when Katy comes bounding into the kitchen demanding answers, you find yourself needing a moment to process your thoughts before answering.
“Already asking for missions, huh? I take it the giant soul sucker wasn’t exciting enough for you,” You retort with a raised brow before taking a bite of your fruity pebbles. Katy rolls her eyes at you.
“We’ve been here for a week and the most exciting thing we’ve done is shop for groceries,” she says exasperated. “When do we get to bust weapons dealers and stop ATM robberies?”
“Actually, ATM robberies are kind of Spider-Man’s thing.”
“You know what I mean!”
“What’s going on?”
The sound of his voice startles you as Shang-Chi makes his way into the kitchen and begins to prepare a cup of tea. He’s been here for seven days and you still haven’t gotten used to his presence, not after being apart for so long, but you’re trying. Things are still awkward and up in the air when it comes to the two of you, but it’s bearable at least. There’s still much to do when it comes to mending your relationship, but your duties as an Avenger come first before your love life, so here you are.
“Look, I’m sorry, but as of right now we’ve been instructed to lay low. Unless another Thanos situation comes up, our only job is getting this team back in shape,” you explain much to her dismay. “Besides, even if there was a mission to go on, there’s no way you two would be ready.”
“Whoa, hang on a minute,” Shang-Chi chimes in defensively, “don’t you think you’re underestimating us a little bit here?”
“Yeah, I mean, we fought that giant soul sucker and basically saved the world from getting destroyed,” Katy adds.
“And I applaud you for that. But you’re still new to the Avengers and you don’t know how things work around here. Not to mention you haven’t even started your training.”
“Oh, please,” Shangqi scoffs. “Whatever training you have I’m sure we can handle.”
“You sure about that, Bus Boy?” You challenge with a teasing smirk. “It’s not as easy as you think it is.”
“Trust me, we’ll be just fine.”
~~~
Training is not “fine” at all.
Katy had tapped out hours ago after numerous failed trials in the archery range, begrudgingly admitting that maybe she wasn’t quite ready for a high stakes mission just yet. Instead, she took to nursing a juice box from the fridge as she watched you and Shangqi get ready to spar in the training room. She observed your movements curiously, watching the way you delicately wrapped your hands as if you weren’t about to go one-on-one with her best friend. Though you were her favorite, she had to admit you were somewhat terrifying; your air of confidence and cool demeanor made you insanely intimidating, and she was glad it was Shaun and not her about to throw down with you.
“Now remember, don’t go easy on me,” you instruct as you get into your fighting stance. “Whatever you dish I can take.”
“Who said anything about going easy?” He replies with a cocky smirk.
“Okay, mister tough guy,” you mock with a laugh.
“Can you guys stop flirting and just fight already?” Katy calls out impatiently. Shang-Chi looks away in embarrassment, shooting a scowl at his friend as he begins to tell her off.
And that’s when you strike.
Your first connecting with his chest sends him sprawling across the room and into the padded wall behind him. There’s a searing hot pain that spreads along his skin where you touched, and the poor man can do nothing but look upon you flabbergasted as you shake out the sparks from your hand.
“You absolute cheater,” he accuses, though there’s no anger present in his voice, “you never said anything about having super powers!”
“I’m bad at communicating, remember?” You reply coyly before coming over and offering your hand to him. He hesitates, clearly afraid of being burned again, before taking your hand and hoisting himself up off the floor.
“Consider that your first lesson. Lots of people have enhanced abilities in some shape or form, and not all of them use their talents for good. When you’re out there, you have to be ready for anything.”
“Note taken,” he says with a groan while stretching out his limbs. “I had no idea you could do that.”
“I did,” Katy butts in proudly much to her friend’s dismay. “I saw her do it to a bad guy on YouTube once. She can shoot little sparky thingies from her fingers and all sorts of other cool stuff.”
“Someone’s done her research,” you note with a playful smile. “I knew you were going to be my favorite.”
“How long have you been able to do that?”
“I don’t really know, since forever, I guess? It took a while for me to get good at it, but it was always kind of there. I caused a citywide power outage once when I was fourteen, and that’s how Banner and Stark found me.”
“So you’ve been an Avenger since you were fourteen?” He reiterates with a raised brow. “I feel like that violates at least one child labor law somehow.”
“It wasn’t child labor,” you retort with a roll of your eyes. “I still went to school, still spent time with my family, still got to have a somewhat normal life. Only difference was I spent my weekends at Avengers’ tower learning to control my abilities and training with Black Widow to make sure I was ready for the next mission. Now are we done with the backstory spiel or can we get back to training?”
“What? No way! You can’t just start a story and then not finish it,” Katy protests. “We want to know more.”
“Alright, tell you what. Shangqi and I will go one-on-one again, but this time, if he manages to beat me, I’ll answer any and all questions you have. Deal?”
“Do not ruin this for us,” the girl warns her best friend only for him to smile wryly in response.
“Thanks for the support, Katy. It’s a deal, but no powers.”
“Fine. I don’t need them to beat you anyway,” you reply with a coy smile.
Though his ego is slightly wounded by your comment, Shangqi still finds himself getting into his fighting stance and preparing for your next attack. Palms opened and leg planted firmly behind him, he relaxes his shoulders and and follows your movement as you slowly begin to circle each other around the mat. While he’s fought giant monsters and ridden on the back of an actual dragon, fighting his ex-girlfriend is somehow scarier than both incidents combined.
To an outsider it would look as if the two of you were dancing together rather than fighting, like some sort of twisted tango. If he stepped forward, you stepped back. When you swung he ducked, and any time he managed to have you pinned you found a way to twist your way out of his grasp. Your movements were fluid and quick, equal in skill and intensity, and no matter how hard the two of you tried neither could seem to get the one up on the other. This dance of yours could quite possibly go on for hours until one of you cracked under the pressure.
He pins you a third time, knees pressed firmly against your ribs to keep you caged between his legs, one hand holding your wrists together while the other raises above your head in preparation for a punch he doesn’t intend to throw. Sweat trickles down his forehead and his chest heaves from the exertion of your fight, and despite the fact that he finally has you beat you merely smile up at the man.
“You always did like being on top, didn’t you?“
“Wait, what?”
Shangqi is absolutely mortified at your playful quip, his eyes widening and hold loosening as he attempts to find the words to explain himself, and you use this opportunity to escape his grasp once again. Swinging one knee upward into his back, you send him crumbling down on top of you before shoving him off. While he stumbles to get back onto his feet, you’re quick to side sweep his legs so that he lands onto his back flat across the mat. A low groan sounds from the man as he looks up at you in defeat, a small frown etched across his features.
“You really don’t like talking about your past, do you?”
“Not really,” you answer with a shrug. “But you understand that, right?”
“Oh, I know a thing or two,” he murmurs offhandedly.
“In time, Shangqi,” you promise before excusing yourself from the room and heading towards the showers.
Watching your retreating figure, Shang-Chi picks himself up off the floor with a groan. He isn’t sure what hurts worse— getting his ass kicked or watching you shut him out once more. Either way, he is nowhere close to rekindling the flame that had once burned so brightly between the two of you.
“You okay, slugger?” Katy asks after having silently watched the entire scene from the sidelines.
“She’s so different now,” he laments quietly.
“Well, she did have to fight a giant purple guy and lost most of her friends in the process. I’m sure that would change anybody.”
“No, I know. I just mean, we were kids when we first met. What if… what if she’s outgrown me, you know?” He says despondently.
“Hey, if it makes you feel any better, the sexual tension between you two during that fight was insane,” Katy says with an encouraging pat on the back. “I mean, not even a knife could cut through it. You’d probably need a really big sword or something to do the job.”
“There wasn’t any sexual tension,” Shangqi interjects defensively. “We were just focused on the fight.”
“Sure, okay. Don’t think I didn’t notice the heart eyes you guys were giving each other. I’ve never seen you so whipped before.”
“I’m not whipped,” he retorts. “I just have an appreciation for strong women is all.”
“Yeah, okay, whatever you say.”
Though Shang-Chi can deny it all he wants, Katy is right. The man is in deep, and he has no idea what to do with himself. You still have a long way to go in terms of mending your relationship, and he isn’t even sure if you return his sentiment. All he can do is wait it out and see.
And fortunately, he won’t have to wait much longer.
Shangqi enjoyed when you showered him with love and attention every now and then, but you noticed that he was more touchy feely than normal. It didn’t change the way you went about your day, nor did it change the way you love him. But you were curious as to what got him in this kind of mood. It got to the point where your signs of affection weren’t enough so after dinner, he dragged you into his room to passionately fuck you. An hour later, your lover spilled his taint inside you, pecking small kisses over your sweaty face.
Shangqi collapsed onto the bed next to you, lungs begging for fresh air as he came down from the blissful high that you brought him to. You giggled next to him, staring at the ceiling as if looking straight into the pearly gates of heaven. Your hands linked together in the middle of the bed, and then your eyes met like a magnet pulled you towards one another.
“You still with me, Princess?” your super boyfriend asked, dragging his thumb over your hand.
You smiled, “Yeah, just needed to catch my breath.”
“C’mere Princess, I wanna hold you.” You obligingly rolled over until your naked body was flush against Shangqi’s and he instantly wrapped his arms around you.
“Someone’s extra cuddly and affectionate today,” you teased, smiling until your cheeks were sore. What Shangqi was about to say next made you regret poking fun at him.
“I’m sorry if I’m too much, baby. I just don’t want you to leave me.” He hid his face into the crook of your neck. Your heart hurt like a bee had stung it and the wound swelled against your chest.
“Woah, now,” you frowned, worry and melancholy laced in your voice. “I love you and I would never leave you. Why would you ever think that?” Not a peep came from Shangqi as his face stayed buried there. You called out his name, almost like a whisper, causing him to peek his head out. His brown eyes glistened with tears that were aching to fall down his face.
“This is gonna sound silly.” As much as you wanted to retort and disagree with him, you allowed him to speak his mind. “Last night, I had a dream that you died while fighting the Scarlet Witch–well, Wanda–and I obviously didn’t take your death very well, so I joined her in helping her find her sons. And in turn, she promised to help me find a universe where we could be together again. The thing is, Wanda knew all along that there wouldn’t be a universe where you loved me because I followed the footsteps of my father. You only saw me as a killer.” Shangqi paused. Not because he was waiting for a response from you, but because he was fighting the urge to choke on his words.
“You know something. I was always curious about the multiverse. After my father died, I wondered what my life would be like if both my mother and father were still alive. Maybe I wouldn’t have had to spend my whole childhood learning to become an assassin. Maybe my relationship with my sister wouldn't be so strained. Maybe my mom and dad would have grown old together like they wanted. We could’ve been happy. We could’ve been a real family. But then I realized other things. I would’ve never met Katy. I would’ve never taken the rings. I wouldn’t have met your dad and become an Avenger.” Shangqi’s voice began to crack as a tear finally trickled down his cheek. “Most of all, I would never have met you.” His head burrowed into your neck again, sobbing while squeezing you tenderly against him. Your fingers combed through his hair tossled from your previous activities. You allowed him to cry until he was ready to continue.
“I don’t know how many other universes there are—I’d actually rather not know—-but I don’t ever want to live in a universe without you in it. I can’t live without you, Princess.” His words struck a chord deep inside you. He plucked that chord inside you as his wet tears permeated your collarbone. It didn’t register that you had been crying until a salty tear dripped onto your lip and you struggled to breathe out of your nose.
“Shangqi, look at me.” Your hand caressed his tear stained cheek, causing him to peer into your loving eyes. His vision was blurry due to his tearful eyes, but he still managed to find your gaze. “It was just a dream. I’m here and I’m safe with you. I didn’t have the privilege of jumping universes with Strange and America, but I doubt that you became your father in every universe. And I refuse to believe that I hated you in every universe.” You pressed your lips to his temple, leaving them there for a few seconds. He grinned slightly behind the sniffles.
“Your mind is playing games with you and I don’t want you listening to them. I love you, Shangqi, and nothing will ever change that.” While you talked, Shangqi rested his hand over yours on his cheek, drawing circles over your hand with his thumb. He loved how you always knew the right words to say that would make him feel better. After the years of pain he went through, you and your love were exactly what he needed.
Another tear trailed down your eye as your lips curled into a warm smile. “No matter how many universes there are in the multiverse, I hope every variant of me is lucky enough to be loved by you.”
Shangqi wasted no time in pulling you closer to him so he could kiss you. His lips molded against yours as if they were made to be sculpted together. He traced your bare skin with his taut hands, cherishing your ethereal curves. Without breaking the kiss, you threw your leg over his hips, hoisting yourself up so you can straddle him. Shangqi grinned against your lips at the sudden maneuver.
“Let me prove to you that I love you and will never leave you.” As you moved down his legs, Shangqi watched you with a smirk and a raised eyebrow. Grasping his cock, you stroked him until he was pulsing with desire in your hands. His raspy whimpers caused your core to slicken and throb with need. You were eager for him to fill you with his love.
“I love you, Princess. I love you so much.” You gazed into his brown eyes as you sunk on top of him, mouths falling ajar and eyebrows furrowed in the middle. Once you were connected at your groins, your lips crashed against his, drinking each other’s moans while your hips moved against one anothers to a beat that was made for the two of you.
*********
Y/N’s movements were a little slower than usual as she dodged, kicked, and punched, and it was obvious, especially to her. It was obvious, and it frustrated her to no end as she continued to move around the mat.
The slight throbbing in her temple she had woken up with had only gotten worse as the day went on, and it continued to do so the more she exerted herself.
She tried to hide the pain behind a grimace, but under the guise of being focused, but she had a slight suspicion that he could see right through her. This only prompted her to intensify her actions, trying to come off as fine when in reality, the pressure in her head was close to debilitating.
She knew that she should have stopped and told him what was wrong, but the stubborn, reckless side of her won out. And that was exactly what she was doing: being incredibly reckless.
A grunt left her mouth as she was pushed back, her feet stumbling over each other.
“Y/N, what’s going on with you tonight? You’re a little slower than usual.”
Shangqi’s voice rang out, a teasing lilt to it as he gazed at her with his hands on his hips. His eyebrows were furrowed in genuine worry as she bent at the waist, bracing herself against her knees.
With every breath she took came another painful throb in her temple, and even with her eyes squeezed shut, she could feel her head spinning.
Hearing her labored breaths and noticing her silence, Shangqi walked closer, the small smile on his face dropping.
“Hey, what’s wrong? We can take a break. We should take a break.”
At his words, Y/N shook her head slowly before straightening. The wince that she tried to hide did not go unnoticed.
“I’m fine. Let’s go again.”
Shangqi’s head tilted and his eyes narrowed slightly, this time with suspicion.
“Y/N, there’s nothing wrong with taking a break. Maybe get a sip of water-”
“I’m fine, Shangqi, okay? I’m...I’m good.”
The conviction in her voice was enough for him to slowly nod his head before taking stance. His eyes watched her carefully as she did the same, and once he was satisfied that she was ready, he resumed their dance around each other.
He threw easily avoidable hits while still watching the way she reacted. Her eyebrows were pinched in concentration as she blocked his hits, her feet moving in the way he had taught her.
For a brief moment, she felt pride and forgot about the pain that gripped her head. All of the sparring lessons were culminating into something she was proud of.
But then Shangqi had to throw a punch while simultaneously going for her exposed bottom half.
She had managed to block the hit, but she had been too oblivious of her open leg area.
Y/N felt herself falling and managed to right her foot enough to where her impact with the mat was more controlled. An almost embarrassing “oof” fell from her lips as she quite literally landed on her ass.
It only took a few seconds for Shangqi to approach her, his hand held out to help her up.
“We’re taking a break. I’ll go get your water.”
The finality of his words paired with her own frustration resulted in a pang of anger quickly running through her.
She grabbed his hand and pulled herself up quickly, her mouth forming words of insistence that only dissipated as black spots crowded her vision.
She rapidly blinked her eyes, but only seemed to make it worse. The pain in her head had decided to make itself known once again, and it came with a vengeance.
This time, she couldn’t stop the small groan from escaping her mouth as her hand raised and gripped her head.
The pain was unbearable now, akin to having one’s head slammed into a metal pole without the relief of eventually passing out. She could feel the throbbing at the base of her neck, and the pain had started to make her stomach churn.
She should have listened to him. She should have stopped earlier.
Y/N hadn’t realized that she was swaying, leaning a little too far in one direction, until she felt soft, calloused hands land on her arms.
“Y/N...Y/N, talk to me. What’s going on?”
As she spoke, Shangqi gently guided her down until she was safely kneeling on the floor, no longer swaying on her feet. He wasted no time in kneeling in front of her, his hands moving to cup her face.
“Come on, take deep breaths. Talk to me, sweetheart.”
Y/N spoke quietly and through clenched teeth, her hand continuing to put pressure against her temple.
“Migraine.”
The sigh that left Shangqi’s mouth was sympathetic as he rubbed her cheek. He leaned forward and pressed a chaste kiss against her forehead before slowly rising and bringing her with him.
He had no trouble supporting her weight as he led her in the direction of his room, leaving the open space behind them.
In reality, it had only taken a minute or so to get to Shangqi’s room, but every step had felt like 10 to Y/N. She was acutely aware of Shangqi turning off every light as they walked, and if she weren’t so busy making sure her lunch stayed down, she would have expressed her love and gratitude for his actions.
She simply let Shangqi guide her to wherever she needed to go, knowing and trusting without a doubt that he would take care of her.
He only proceeded to prove her right as he wasted no time in walking her towards his bed and gently lowering her onto it. As soon as she was situated, he quietly walked around the bed and turned off every remaining light, the tv, and even closed the blinds.
In only a span of a few seconds, he had grabbed a glass of water and the medicine she had left at his place for a situation exactly like this.
“Y/N, here’s your medicine. Come on, babe. I just need you to take this real quick.”
With an agonized groan and her eyes still tightly shut, Y/N slowly sat up. Her hands blindly reached out, prompting Shangqi to drop her pill into her hand followed by the glass of water. She took the medicine quickly and without hesitation, before holding it out once more.
Shangqi’s hands shot out, one grabbing the glass while the other gently landed on her back, keeping her from laying back down.
A noise between a soft cry and a groan left Y/N’s mouth at being stopped, but the slight annoyance she had quickly dissipated as Shangqi gently crawled into bed in front of her.
All while whispering apologies to her, he maneuvered their bodies to where they could lay down with Y/N completely covering his body with her own.
There had been a question on the tip of her tongue as he had moved them, but it all made sense when his hands raised and started massaging her temples, gingerly but with enough pressure to ease the pain.
She felt his lips touch her hair, and it made a lone tear slip from her tear line. The tears that formed as a result of pain only fell as a result of being cared and loved for.
But Shangqi had interpreted the new tear stain on his shirt as one of pain. He spoke softly with his lips pressed to her head.
“I know. I know, I’m sorry I can’t do more.”
His words made her arms tighten where they were wound around his torso. As she spoke, more tears fell from her eyes.
“You do more than enough, Shangqi. You’re more than enough.”
I hope you all enjoyed this! Like I said, this is a comfort fic that I really wrote for myself, but decided to post it here! I do deal with chronic migraines, and with every migraine comes a great disdain for everyone in the immediate vicinity....but I just KNOW that Shangqi would do anything to help me feel better, so I wanted to write it!
This week has been reaaaalllyy tough so far between work, class, and personal issues, so that’s another reason why this is a comfort fic, it helped me escape life while I was writing.
But once again, I hope you all enjoyed this! Please like, reblog, and/or leave a comment. Literally whenever someone leaves a comment, it makes my day!
OH! I’m also thinking about making a tag list! 👀👀
Stay safe, y’all!
Like Father, Like Son // female!reader x Shangqi
requested? yes!
WARNINGS: SPOILERS, blood, minor violence
Tumblr media
Things were happening a little too quickly for your liking. One second you’re standing with your boyfriend and best friend in his sister’s office at her fighting ring and then next, you’re being grabbed by guys that were clad in all black and looked to be something out of a Henchmen Weekly edition. Being the brilliant genius and loyal idiot you are, you immediately moved to wrench your arm free and get to Katy’s side but then a very large, very heavy fist decided to meet your face.
And then you found yourself on the floor.
Voices erupted above you, mixed shouts of Mandarin and English and a lot of cursing from Katy’s end. You blinked past the blurriness that clouded your vision and reached up to press a hand to your burning face. Blood coated your fingers thanks to the split lip you seemed to be sporting and you winced as the pain started to set in.
“Get her up!” someone boomed. “I said to leave them untouched!”
Your ears rang and the coppery taste of blood coated your tongue. You spat it out of your mouth and onto the floor, fully aware of how disgusting that was. One of the henchmen grabbed your arm and hauled you up. You honestly couldn’t focus on where they were taking you and instead kept your eyes locked on your feet below you to ensure that you were truly taking one step at a time.
Until the man holding you stopped and yanked you back, causing you to stumble before he forced you to stand still. Your raised your eyes to find Shangqi staring at you. If someone told you last week that you would be standing before your boyfriend with blood trailing down your lips and his father’s goons separating you, you would have laughed and promptly fucked out of the conversation. But this was real and this was now and shit your lip hurt.
You shut your eyes against the burning tears that threatened to spill down your cheeks and inhaled deeply before raising your chin once more and looking to find a look of pure murderous rage on Shangqi’s face.
So much for a family reunion.
“She stays with me.”
Shangqi’s words ring through your head as he carefully and gently wipes the blood from your chin. You can see by the way his jaw is clenched and his fingers tremble that he’s suppressing the anger that’s lying under his skin.
When his father instructed the guards to bring the women to one room, Shangqi immediately shot that idea down and pulled you behind him. He knew Xialing wouldn’t let anything happen to Katy but he just...he couldn’t let you out of his sight. Not like this. Not here. Wenwu made some passing comment about you being weak and you had to grab Shangqi’s shirt to ensure he didn’t try to take on the entirety of the Ten Rings just to defend your honor.
“Alright?” His voice broke you out of your thoughts and you nodded against the hold he had on your chin. He raised the washcloth once more and dabbed at your lip.
“Need to hear you say it, sweetheart.”
“I’m alright. Thrown for a loop and a bit dizzy but okay.”
He tossed the rag down into the bowl seated next to you, seemingly satisfied with his work. He leaned forward and pressed his lips to the corner of your mouth in a quick, painless kiss that had you wishing for more even though you knew it would hurt like a bitch.
“What is this room?” you asked, your fingers playing with his hair as he crouched before you. His dark eyes roamed around the bare walls and then settled on the pillar of wood that stood in the middle of the room. It had a large, deep groove in it and he pulled away from you to run his fingers down the rough wood.
“I trained on this,” he said, forming a fist with his hand and settling it perfectly in the groove. You moved to stand behind him and took his other hand in yours to run your thumbs over the battered and scarred knuckles that you were always curious about but never had the courage to ask.
Your arms wrapped around him from behind and he let his shoulders fall in relief. His hands tangled with yours and you held him tightly to you.
“I’m sorry. I thought I could protect you from this. I should have never let you and Katy come.”
“Shangqi, I knew what I was getting into when I fell in love with you. I chose to come along even after seeing the fight on the bus. I knew this would be dangerous. But I knew I needed to come with you. You can’t blame yourself for my choices.”
He let his head fall forward and you kissed his clothed shoulder before pressing your cheek to his back. A humorless chuckle escaped his lips and he shook his head.
“You’re too loyal and stubborn for your own good.”
“Yeah, but you love me for it.”
He didn’t even need to say the words. You knew. You knew simply by the way he squeezed your hand. He would love until he couldn’t love any longer.
Unbeknownst to the two of you, his father stood just outside the room. Wenwu felt the familiar ache of grief in his chest hearing the couple. You weren’t weak, not at all. You were the grounding force to his son’s chaos, just like Ying Li was to him. He saw the absolute devastation in Shangqi’s eyes at the sight of your battered face and Wenwu understood. There was a time when he had felt the same way.
It only encouraged him to save his wife and his family that much more.
