The Golden Dagger Club
Tumblr media
Pairing: Shang-chi x symbiote!reader
Word Count: 2145
You were just starting to repair the damages of a recuperating career and then the Blip happened. You were dusted away for five years and appeared back into your shitty apartment – your old shitty apartment that was occupied by someone else – and were left with nothing. Your clothing and furniture were all thrown away and your renewed show was trashed because everyone still alive was trying to cope with the loss of loved ones.
To those that stayed, you were considered lucky. Is it lucky to have nothing to come back to? The banks refused to help and getting any loans needed minimum of five years of income. Obviously that’s impossible as you were dusted for all five of those years making the institution useless. No one was willing to hire either as you were often overqualified or lacked any recent experience in the workforce.
Unlike some of the others who also disappeared, you didn’t have a family to help you adapt to the new culture that flourished whilst you were gone. There was still a semblance of the old but you were on your own.
Waiting was the worst. The United Nations were scrambling to provide provisions, documents, and other essentials for those who came back. It was a real shit show and at times, made you wish you never came back.
You had to worry about scavenging enough food for Venom or else it’s your organs that’ll be on the menu and you want your organs to remain intact and uneaten. You also don’t want to watch Venom bite someone’s head off again. You had to work fast as Venom was most likely going to starve and the government wasn’t working fast enough.
You heard murmurs of an underground tournament that pays very well for winning contestants. You weren’t a stranger of questionably immoral activities. You and Venom needed this. It was a saving grace in the waiting game of darkness. The United Nations were behind on provisions and housings, and you couldn’t wait for the miracle of them hurrying along the process.
So you left. The world didn’t need to know you were back, undusted and alive. It had moved on without you and there was no point in sticking around. The world would believe you were the unlucky ones to be at the wrong place during the Snap.
The world would get to learn of the existence of Venom, see the both of you as more than a blurry black figure from security cameras. See the two of you reappear after your hiatus. Your reappearance will be on that podium, hundred of eyes on you, seeing you, and cheering for you.
You had arrived to your brand new start. A new beginning to the end of a shitty chapter. “Welcome to the Golden Daggers Club! We’re a multi-platform global operation. Every fight live streamed on the dark web. Thousands of viewers placing bets as we speak.” The ringmaster, Jon Jon, explained as he handed you the sign up sheet. You read carefully, not wanting to be screwed over in the end, and when you deemed everything acceptable you signed on. It was fast and easy. Pen on paper and suddenly a new door opened.
There must’ve been hundreds of people in the unfinished building. Small cells, containing smaller fights, lead up to the giant podium where the grander fights and higher betting stakes take place. Within the club, you had to earn your place. Starting in those small cells and work your way up to become a favorite.
Your first opponent was no one memorable. They were enhanced to some degree but nothing remotely close to be able to take the two of you down. It was almost too easy but Venom adored the attention they’d garnered. On the other side of the cell were many onlookers, wanting to see more of the alien creature. It was itching more for fights, more advanced opponents, and scoring chocolate money. The club loved Venom. The fame and attention caught the curiosity of the club’s founder.
Xu Xialing was cold, complex, and a fighter. Her coldness was strictly targeted to men but once she saw the person beneath Venom, she’d lighten up around the two of you. You became her friend. You’d learn bits and pieces of her past while you shared yours. She’d given you a chance to start anew even if she didn’t know it. You felt like you owed her for providing a way to provide for Venom in a way your old job couldn’t. You and Venom took it upon yourselves to take out the trash, people who were trying to shut her operation down. The club meant so much to people and you didn’t want anyone to shit on the empire she’d built.
It was a night like any other. Bets were placed and the money just kept coming. The bar was filled as always and Venom was itching for its turn. “Take it easy on the chocolates, it’s about to be your turn.” You were currently watching the fight between Abomination, who was broken out of prison by his opponent, and the current Sorcerer Supreme, Wong. Wong seemed overwhelmed at first but managed to get Abomination to punch themselves.
“I’ve worked up an appetite.” Venom grunted as they bit the whole chocolate bar in its entirety. You could feel it buzzing with excitement.
Wong had won his fight and you were walking towards the main stage. “Doing what, sitting?” You replied as Venom’s pitch black skin covered you fully. Your thin arms concealed by its large muscles and build. No one in the crowd would ever guess who was underneath its skin.
The name of your opponent was called Flux. You had seen his fights before, seen him climb up ranks. You nor Venom were worried though. You’d let Venom take full control as it was its moment not yours. Venom tore onto the stage, hyping up the crowd, and waited for the fight to begin. The lights, the cheers, and the overwhelming anticipation riddled your being. It was exhilarating and you couldn’t wait for Venom to have the time of its life.
Flux wasn’t overpowered by much. Having superhuman strength, stamina and durability assists in keeping up with you and Venom. You’d been lucky no one has caught on to your weaknesses. As Venom controlled your body, you thought about how different your life had become and how thankful you were for being the right match for Venom. Feeling the immense happiness originating from it makes you happy. You knew Venom felt miserable hidden within your body, not allowed to stretch till night fell. Here in the club, it didn’t matter. Almost every fighter had some enhancement that made them different from everyone else. Had skills most didn’t possess.
Once the fight was over, the club’s staff members dragged Flux away towards the locker room. Venom, after celebrating its win with the crowd, followed afterwards. A giant teeth-filled grin dwelled on its face until its skin disappeared into your body.
You opened your designated locker and pulled out a box of chocolates and a 12 pack of diet soda. Opening them one by one you feed Venom by placing them into its mouth and congratulating them on its win while you consume the diet soda. In moments like these Venom resembled a puppy. Craved for your attention and wanted to feel loved.
You’d notice Jon Jon speaking to someone you’d only seen on your phone. The Bus Boy video that’s been dominating the internet. Venom had dismissed the guy as he wasn’t anything special except for maybe his delicious brain but you didn’t want to find out.
“[Reader], Venom,” Jon Jon yelled, “the boss wants to talk!” The guy next to him watched curiously at the Venom head appearing out of your side.
“If anyone steals even one chocolate or soda, I’ll bite your head off and feast on your organs.” Venom made sure to show off its teeth to the remaining contenders before going to Xialing’s office. You sat down on a chair waiting for her to arrive. Jon Jon left the dubbed Bus Boy in her office as well. He stayed standing, not knowing what to do. He was nervous, that was evident, and a bit awkward.
“Do you know who we are supposed to meet?” He didn’t know how to talk to you or Venom. If he were being honest, Venom kinda scared him. The threats given did not help at all. “I need to find my sister. Do you know her, Xu Xialing?” You noticed he kept a white tissue around his nostrils. The metallic smell of blood allowed you to know the reason why.
You stayed quiet not knowing the reason as to why he was asking. Knowing he was in her workplace, she’ll show herself eventually.
She walked in, taking her place behind her laptop.
“You run this place?” He talked in Mandarin.
“I own it.” She replied back.
Another woman was let in by Jon Jon, counting the stack of cash as she walked into the room. She was adorable when she was caught red handed. Having bet against the man, her friend apparently. “Did you bet against me?”
“No.” She lied. “I bet on that Venom dude earlier.” In an attempt to change the subject, she turned the attention on you and Xialing, “Hi Xialing and stranger. I’m Katy. You’re, like, such a badass. Everything that you do is, like, so cool. That was really cool.” She walked towards one of the seats next to her friend, which you still did not have a name for.
“This is [Reader].” Xialing replied, “The Venom dude from earlier.”
Katy gasped excitedly, “No way! I thought Venom had more muscles. Love the costume by the way. What fabric do you use?” She shook your hand frantically and laughed, “Your fight was so amazing. You made me a lot of money.”
You had never integrated with someone who had so much shameless confidence. She had seen you and Venom fight and she was treating you like a hero. Most run away at the sight of the two of you. It was a nice change of scenery. “Alien, I guess? Venom come out and say ‘hello’ to a fellow fan.”
“A fan…” He muttered as he moved his head towards her, “So unafraid, so courageous. You shall not be eaten.”
She chuckled nervously, “Thank you.”
“I like your pants.” Xialing turned the conversation towards herself.
Katy blushed, “Thank you. Thanks. Yeah.” She was obviously flattered by the compliment as she smoothed out her yellow pants.
“What do you want?” The coldness of Xialing's voice appeared suddenly. A certain sharpness you had never heard, finally making its existence known.
“The Ten Rings ambushed us in San Francisco.” San Francisco was the place where you once lived. The tomb of the life you once had.
“I saw the video.” Everyone had seen the video. It became a viral phenomenon which was rare as it raced against hero and alien sightings, and meet and greets with international heroes.
“They took my pendant. They’re gonna come for yours next.” You had learned about the pendant Xialing never took off as it was a gift from her mother. To learn he shared the same or similar pendant must mean only one thing. “I don’t know what he wants with them, but we both know it can’t be good.”
“You know what he said to me when he left?” You heard this story only once. It was a painful memory of abandonment and the loss of a sibling. Not in death, but in spirit. Lost of hope while living in the fragments of an once happy family. “‘I’ll be back in three days.’ And after three days, I went to our mom’s shrine and waited. Three days turned into a week, a week turned to a month, and a month turned to six years. That’s how long it took me to realize I didn’t need him any more. I built this place on my own. I didn’t need you then, and I don’t need you now.”
“I volunteer to eat him.” Venom liked Xialing. She snuck chocolates to it and was the first person, who wasn’t [Reader], to not be afraid of it. She gave you and it a home. “I’ll make it painful.” He licked his lips to scare Xialing’s brother even more.
Xialing smiled at Venom. It was the thought that counted and Venom meant well. He inched away from you and asked, “Then why would you send me the postcard?”
“What postcard?”
He got up from his seat and reached into his pockets. He slowly walked towards her before handing it to her.
“I didn’t send you this.” After she spoke those words, everything went to shit.

protector- shangqi
pairings: xu shangqi x reader warnings: bruises, physical assault, asshole boss about: requested! (DA32) “are those bruises?” + (DA19) “touch her, and i’ll murder you.” a/n: my darling requester i am SO sorry. it doesn’t usually take me this long to finish a request, but i have been exhausted this week fro some reason, and i couldn’t figure out how to end this. i hope you enjoy anyway!
you can barely gather enough strength to push the door of your shared apartment open, weighed down by the bags under your eyes and the fact that you were supposed to leave work over two hours ago. your forehead knocks against the cool entrance of your home, eyes shut in emotional exhaustion as the key in your hand blindly tries to find the lock. you groan softly when you continuously miss it, hitting your head a few times in frustration. you’re barely lifting yourself off of the door, eyeing the lock, and aiming the key when the door swings open, your boyfriend standing in the frame with furrowed brows. “y/n?”
at the sight of him, you step into your apartment and press your face against his chest, loosely wrapping your arms around his waist as he returns the favor with a tighter grip, still a little confused as he shuts the door behind you. “shangqi,” you mumble out, words muffled by his chest, “i missed you,” you continue, nuzzling your nose against the soft material of his shirt.
he’d been gone the past few days for a mission, and while you would usually make a bigger deal out of his return--meaning balloons and some poorly made dessert that he’ll eat anyways and definitely not you, exhausted, and on the verge of frustrated tears--you had been so tired lately, and you were back home too late for anything, anyways.
“i missed you too,” shangqi trails off, pressing his lips to your head as a comfort that works. “are you okay?” he asks.
“i’m better now,” you shrug, completely honest considering the way you can feel the energy you’d lost at your job rushing back into you with the smell of shangqi. “‘don’t even think i need the nap i was gonna take when i came home.”
“are you sure? i don’t think it’ll hurt,” shangqi debates, his worries utterly clear in his tone.
you force a breathy laugh from your throat, nodding, “you trying to get rid of me?”
“never,” shangqi replies immediately. “but, i am trying to get you to maybe watch a movie with me?” he baits, knowing full well that there’s no point in arguing with you when you’re so stubborn, instead planning to put on one of the movies that never fails to make you fall asleep, if not only for you to rest a little.
“that,” you begin, lifting your head from his chest but not moving from your place in his arms. “sounds like a great idea,” you smile, pecking his lips before letting him pull you to the couch, where you sink into him again.
shangqi puts on the movie he remembers katie raving about, dramatically groaning at you each time you fell asleep. none of you had any idea what it was about it, but you were always knocked out cold by the first twenty minutes, less if you were as tired as you seemed to be.
you glance at him when you notice the movie he’s choosing, poking him, “shangqi…” you warn, catching onto his plan.
“what?” he feigns innocence, throwing his arm around you to pull you even closer, “‘felt like watching it. you know how great the ending is.”
you don’t. which is why the lie is so damning.
you only grumble and settle in beside him, basking in his warmth and pressing stray kisses to whichever place you can reach, happy to have him back. you’re asleep seven minutes in.
-
an hour later, you’re shimmying your shoulders in the kitchen, moving your hips to a song you hadn’t been able to get out of your head for a while before shangqi left. you’re making something for both you and him to eat--nothing too hard, of course; shangqi has made sure to assign you something you can’t burn, something you appreciate after the last time you’d almost burnt down the apartment.
shangqi is eyeing you from the hallway where he’d just come out of the bathroom, a small smile crinkling his eyes as he enjoys seeing you in your element, a welcomed difference to who you had been when you walked through the door. he walks up behind you, placing a gentle hand on your hip and another one on your stomach to turn you around, meeting the brightness of your smile once you meet his eye. you continue dancing distractedly, a wider grin taking up your face when he begins to dance, too.
you turn a little too fast and bump into a counter, wincing when your hip comes in contact with the marble and letting a small sound of pain slip out. shangqi frowns, watching your hand as it rubs at the covered wound. “what’s wrong?”
you lift up your shirt, scrunching your nose when you catch the colored skin underneath. rolling your eyes, you wave him off as you drop your shirt, “it’s nothing. accident at work, my boss accidentally pushed me when we were in the kitchen.”
the frown never completely leaves shangqi’s face, eyes drifting to the place where your bruise was throughout the rest of the night.
-
the next morning, you’re out of the bed and nearly at the door before shangqi is even waking up, the brunt of the mission hitting like a train by the time he’d let his head hit the pillow. you’re rushing inside the bedroom, scurrying around to look for something and say goodbye to your boyfriend when he wakes up. he’s barely awake, the world blurry around him when he catches handprint-shaped darkened skin around your wrist as you reach for something. you don’t note his distress as he sits up, examining the skin that had been fine before he’d left as you mumble an aha, getting ready to leave your boyfriend.
“okay, found it. i love you and i will see yo--”
“is that a bruise?” shangqi interrupts, voice serious and completely awake as he moves towards you, gently grabbing your arm to examine the injury closer.
you look down at your wrist, laughing dismissively way as you try to take your wrist back. “it’s nothing--”
“that’s not nothing, y/n. who did that to you?” shangqi demands, tone still kind but pleading.
you swallow, scoffing lightly with a playful smile, “it’s just an accident at work yesterday,” you begin, the excuse something he’d heard before, “he just grabbed me a little too hard--”
“who?” shangqi insists.
finally giving in, you sigh, “my boss. he was just in a bad mood, i’m honestly fine.”
“was he the same one who pushed you and gave you that?” shangqi asks, pointing at the place on your hip where another bruise resided.
“yes,” you admit after a second of stubborn silence, crossing your arms protectively over your chest.
“did you tell someone--”
“i’m fine.” you cut him off, “it was just a one-time thing, he was in a bad mood and he apologized right after.”
“y/n,” shangqi starts, grabbing the hand belonging to the unscathed arm, “please tell me if it happens again. i think you should go to someone higher-up than him with this anyways--” at the look on your face, he stops himself, “but, i know that you love your job and you're not going to do that, so i’m not going to force you to, but if this happens again--”
“i will.” you promise, “i’ll tell you or i’ll tell his boss. she’s really good about that kind of thing. but i need to go now.”
“okay,” shangqi sighs, not happy with the way you were going about it, but not wanting to force you into something you didn’t want. “i love you, have a good day.”
“i love you, too,” you say, kissing his forehead, “i’ll be back soon.” you wave at him before you leave, giving him a view of the bruise outlining your wrist.
it leaves him with an ugly taste in his mouth that he can’t seem to shake.
-
it’s almost your lunchtime when he notices you’d forgotten your wallet at the kitchen island, the memory of you bustling about in the morning as you looked for what he assumed was this. poking his tongue against his cheek, he decides to visit you at work to bring it to you, knowing you’ll probably need it to buy food, and if your asshole boss happens to be there… then why not take advantage of the opportunity to introduce himself?
he’s at your workplace in ten minutes, swinging around your sugar mommy wallet as he walks inside the building. he greets hans, the receptionist that already knows him by how many times he’s come in to eat with you, and makes small talk while he signs in before he’s able to go see you, face already brightening when he sees you in your element, practically glowing.
the smile that’s beginning to grow on his face disappears completely once your boss comes into the picture, harsh words he’s probably spewing at you making your face drop. shangqi speeds up, trying to listen to what your boss is saying when he suddenly grabs your injured wrist with an angry hand, pulling you closer and spitting words in your face.
shangqi isn’t sure how he got in the middle of both of you so quickly, hands already extended to shove him away from you and standing in front of you as a protective barrier, features contorted into a dangerous snarl.
“who are you? what the fuck are you doing in my building?” he barks, coming closer to the both of you. shangqi can feel your fingers tangling themselves in his shirt, but you don’t move away from him.
“no, what are you doing putting your hands on her?”
“i don’t think any of this concerns you--”
“i can assure you it does when you’re leaving bruises on my girlfriend.”
your boss’ eyes flit to you, settling on your still figure, “you went and complained? you pathetic---” he begins to lunge at you, an arm outstretched when shangqi suddenly pushes him against a wall before he can even touch you.
“touch her, and i’ll murder you.” shangqi growls, a promise laced in the cold tone you’d never even thought he had. his grip is tight around your boss’ neck, ironed shirt wrinkling with each passing second of shangqi’s tightening grip. you stand behind your boyfriend in shock, only used to the sweet man who would prefer trapping spiders to take them outside. you pull at his shirt, softly saying his name as a way of asking him to calm down.
with a final jostle, shangqi complies, putting your boss down and only glaring at him as he slinks away, proclaiming he’ll sue. he turns to you once your boss is gone, gentle hands reaching for the wrist that had just been in your boss’ grip. his fingers trace gently over the bruise, worried eyes replacing the angry ones he’d had just before. “are you okay?” shangqi asks, scanning your face and pulling you into his embrace. you nod, tightening your arms around him. “i swear, i’ll kill him. who does he think he is? if they don’t fire him, i swear i’ll bring it up to wong or banner or i’ll take care of it myself--”
“i’ve never seen you that mad,” you interrupt in a daze, slowly pulling away and searching the eyes that had been so furious seconds before, now soft and comforting as they observed you.
“i’ve never needed to be,” shangqi tells you, the hands that had been wrapped around your boss’ neck now curling around your waist to pull you closer again, “but when i saw him hurting you--”
“i’m okay,” you assure weakly. “i’m sorry i didn’t tell you about it,” you murmur into his chest, “i just didn’t want you to worry. i was trying to avoid all this.”
“worrying about you is my job, i’m supposed to make sure you’re okay, y/n.”
“okay,” you give in. “i’m sorry. i promise i’ll tell you if anything happens again--”
“oh, no, this isn’t going to happen again.” shangqi promises, pulling back to meet your eyes, “i’ll make sure of it. i’ll stay with you every day if i need to.”
“you won’t need to, i promise,” you vow, “but thank you for protecting me.”
shangqi swears it’s his honor.

The Cookout (Shangqi x black!reader)
Pairing: Shangqi x black!reader
Imagine Shangqi being invited to the cookout lolol
Warning: none really!
Babyboiboyega’s Marvel Masterlist
Babyboiboyega’s Masterlist of Masterlists
Beta: @cloverrover
A/N: while my reader inserts are almost always neutral in terms of the reader’s ethnicity, hair type, etc, being a black woman in the Marvel fandom means that not a lot of reader inserts are really relatable. While some people may think that they’re inserts are neutral, there are small things in them that suggests otherwise.
But even with that being said, this insert is still neutral for the most part!
This oneshot came from my sister and I talking about how different Marvel men would act at a cookout lol
So I hope you enjoy this little oneshot!! <333
************
“What if they don’t like me? Are you sure its okay that I’m here? You told me how special cookouts can be, and I don’t want to intrude-”
Shangqi’s voice wavered slightly as he voiced his concerns. Y/N didn’t even have to look to know that his eyebrows were furrowed in worry. It made her smile lightly as she stopped and turned towards him, stopping him in his tracks.
Despite the loud, upbeat R&B music and the sounds of her family members laughing and conversing, Y/N’s attention was focused solely on Shangqi. She reached down, gently taking his hand in hers while holding her food dish under her other arm. Her voice was soft and reassuring as she spoke.
“Shangqi. Take a breath.” Her smile widened as he did what she said, his chest moving up and down in sync with hers.
“First of all, you are not intruding. You were invited; that means something in and of itself. Two, they’re going to love you. You’re smart, funny, charming, and hot as hell.” She lightly pushed at his chest.
He couldn’t hide the slight blush that crept across his cheeks at her words.
“But even if they don’t like you, which is highly unlikely, I love you. And their feelings about you are not going to change mine, because I know who you are.”
The worry in his eyes had gradually faded until now the only look in them was one of pure adoration. Y/N always made sure that Shangqi knew just how much she loved him, but she still managed to render him speechless sometimes. It was one of the main things he loved about her; no matter what they faced, whether it be massive, winged, soul eaters or her family, she made sure he knew that she was there to walk beside him.
He was still looking at her adoringly when she handed the dish to him before using both of her hands to smooth his collar out. While she had reassured him that he was fine dressing how he usually did, he had taken it upon himself to go for a more, in his words, “classy” look. He had been so excited to see her reaction to his outfit, and it had been worth it. Seeing his off-white, button down shirt paired with a nice pair of khaki pants and dark brown, casual shoes had her...well...to put it lightly, almost jumping his bones as soon as she opened her door. But his reaction to her outfit hadn’t been that different.
Y/N could have worn a burlap sack, and Shangqi still would’ve believed her to be a literal goddess put on this earth. So when she dressed in a different attire than her work clothes, Shangqi had a harder time breathing. Her simple yet elegant outfit, a light brown shirt on top of a same colored skirt that stopped just above her ankles, instantly stole his breath when she opened the door. His eyes had roamed her figure, taking in everything from her perfectly styled hair to the heels that accentuated her legs.
He had been so close to picking her up and walking right back into her apartment. But here they were, standing outside of a quaint but lovely house where festivities had already started.
“Now, you know I love you with my entire heart. I really do.”
“I know you do, Y/N.”
“But with that being said...maybe we should hold off on telling everyone about the island in the pocket dimension and, ya know...the soul eating creatures. My cousins and uncles are kind of protective. I don’t know how they would react to their family member going to another dimension and fighting said soul eating creatures.”
Shangqi’s eyes widened almost comically as he nodded in agreement.
“Yeah, I think that’s for the best. Maybe that's a story for next time.”
At his words, Y/N’s head quickly popped up, her eyes meeting his. There was a smile that was still on her lips, and it only widened at hearing him reference a “next time”. She nodded.
“Yeah! Next time. You ready?” As he gazed down at her, he could tell that she was genuinely asking if he was ready to meet her family. It wasn’t just a rhetorical question, but a genuine one that once again reflected how much she cared for him.
“I’m ready, as long as you’re here.” This time, the smile that appeared on his face didn’t show a hint of nervousness.
When she reached for the dish still in his hands, he simply switched it to his other hand before interlocking his fingers with hers. Instead of letting them fall, Y/N raised their hands and planted a kiss on the back of his hand before lowering them.
“Then let’s go.”
*******
With introductions out of the way (“no, aunty. It’s Shangqi, not Shauntie”), the mandatory interrogations disguised as “man talk” from her cousins and uncles, and seeing Shangqi try your aunt’s sweet potato pie (he knows he saw Jesus), the sun had started to go down. The lights had been turned on and the tables had been cleared, yet the party was still going full swing.
If anything, the music had gotten louder and there were more people doing line dances in the space available despite the late hours approaching. The drinks had been pulled out and were being passed around, yet Shangqi and Y/N sat side by side, just as content as can be.
It didn’t matter how late it got, Shangqi was perfectly fine sitting there beside Y/N. He was perfectly content watching her gaze at her family members with a loving smile on her face. He loved hearing her laugh at the conversations going on around them; conversations she had even included him in. And he absolutely adored seeing her dance in her seat to almost every song that came through the speakers. But he couldn’t help feeling like he was the reason she was still sitting there beside him and not fully enjoying the cookout.
Her body moved like it was second nature to the beat of every song that played, and when he looked down at her feet, he could see them mirroring the steps of those dancing in the middle of the yard.
Despite being totally engrossed in the music, the feeling of Shangqi’s hand on her knee was always warm and anchored her to the present. When she felt her knee being squeezed, she quickly turned her head and met his eyes. Her eyebrows furrowed.
“What’s wrong? Are you ready to leave?”
Even though her questions were sincere, he could see in her eyes that she was hoping he would say no to them. A smile appeared on his face as he leaned closer.
“No! I’m having a lot of fun! But why don’t you go out there? Maybe I can learn the dances by watching you.”
Y/N’s eyebrows raised in surprise, but her eyes lit up. In the span of a few seconds, she was standing up, her hand still holding onto his.
“Okay! But make sure you watch my feet. You’re going to see a lot of different moves out there, but your girl knows what she’s doing.” Her smile turned teasing, and she slowly let go of his hand as he laughed, his eyes crinkling in the corners.
“Oh, trust me. I know. I’ll make sure to keep a close eye out.” Before walking away, Y/N quickly leaned down, pressing a quick peck to his lips before straightening and making her way to the group of her family members who were dancing. Despite them being in the middle of the line dance, he had heard it being called, she joined them effortlessly and smoothly. She looked like she was having the most fun while also looking like she created the dance herself, adding her own flare to it. He was staring unabashedly at her, and he actually didn’t care who saw.
Shangqi hadn’t realized that the chair beside him had been pulled out until he heard a deep voice clear their throat. Only when they cleared their throat for a second time did Shangqi’s attention turn to them in question.
“So you’re my little cousin’s boyfriend, huh?” The man’s face held a hard edge to it, but his eyes were kind as they looked at Shangqi. It still didn’t stop his heart from speeding up just the slightest.
Soul eaters? Fine. Dudes with a machete for a hand? Alright. His girlfriend’s family members who he was just meeting for the first time? Absolutely nerve-wracking.
“Uh, yeah. I’m Shangqi. I don’t think we’ve met yet.”
He held out a hand, her cousin accepting and shaking it once before dropping it. Shangqi watched as he leaned back in his chair, his eyes going to the dance floor.
Following his eye line, Shangqi could see that he was looking at a woman who was dancing beside Y/N. They both had smiles on their faces and were laughing. Both Shangqi and Y/N’s cousin smiled at the scene.
“We haven’t. I’m Steve, Y/N’s older cousin. Her favorite cousin.” A slight laugh left his mouth at his own words, and it made a small smile appear on Shangqi’s face.
“Yeah, Y/N’s mentioned you before. It’s nice getting to finally meet you, man.” Shangqi’s eyes turned to Steve, who’s eyes met his not too long afterwards.
“You too. But since we’re on the subject of my cousin…” Steve sat up, resting his arms on the table in front of them, his eyes still focused on Shangqi. His movements prompted Shangqi to straighten up, rolling his shoulders back subconsciously. What he thought to be another interrogation turned out to be something completely different.
“I see how you look at her, and I’ve seen that look before. It's the look of a man who’s found the one person that makes everything make sense in life.”
Shangqi couldn’t have agreed more, because that was essentially what he had felt when first meeting Y/N. That feeling had only persisted and grown stronger as the years went on, until now, Shangqi couldn’t even imagine life without her. Not that he even wanted to in the first place.
His eyes left Steve’s face and quickly found Y/N’s dancing figure once again at the same time Y/N’s eyes found his. She smiled widely at him and he returned the gesture, even waving his hand.
Shangqi watched as the woman beside Y/N looked in their direction as well and smiled and waved. He could see Steve raise and wave his hand in his peripheral.
“I know that look because I’m absolutely certain that's how I look at my wife. And speaking of wives…”
Without hesitation, Shangqi reached into his pocket and pulled out a small box, showing it quickly to Steve before putting it back. Steve’s eyebrows raised as he looked back at his wife.
“When do you plan on doing it?”
That was a question Shangqi had been asking himself ever since he bought the ring 4 months ago. He knew for a fact that he wanted to ask Y/N, and he wasn’t scared that she would say no. They had talked about marriage before, and both had agreed that it was something they wanted...but only when things had settled down. But that was when they had been about to fight a secret organization and creatures from another dimension the next day. Things had most definitely settled down since then.
But Shangqi was on track to become an Avenger. This might be the only time when things were “settled down”, so this was as good a time as any.
Shangqi hadn’t noticed that he still hadn’t answered until he heard Steve chuckle and felt his shoulder being patted. It broke him out of his reverie only to see Y/N and the woman from earlier, Steve’s wife, walking towards them, smiles on their faces. Before they reached the table, Steve stood and looked at Shangqi, a smile on his face.
“My advice: stop psyching yourself out and ask her. Any and everyone can see how much you two love each other. Don’t miss out on something you both deserve because you’re nervous.”
Before he could respond, Y/N and Steve’s wife had made it to the table, prompting Shangqi to stand as well.
“Shangqi, this is my beautiful wife and other half, Bridgette. Baby, this is Y/N’s boyfriend, Shangqi.”
“It’s nice to meet you, ma’am.” Shangqi reached across the table, holding out his hand only for Bridgette to walk around and embrace him in a hug. He had gotten multiple hugs from cousins and aunties alike while being here, and every single one of them was so welcoming and warm. This one was no different.
“Nice to meet you too, honey. Y/N talks about you so much I feel as if I practically know you already.” She pulled back and her words had Shangqi raising an eyebrow at Y/N who simply shrugged, her lips curved.
“While tonight has been fun, I think I’m a little tired. Are you ready, Steve?”
At his wife’s words, he walked over, wrapping an arm around her waist. He kissed the side of her head before facing the other couple.
“I am if you are. It was nice meeting you, Shangqi. I hope we see you at the next event.”
Shangqi quickly nodded, watching as Y/N walked over to him. Almost as if it were second nature, they both wrapped their arms around each other, Shangqi’s landing on her shoulders while Y/N’s wrapped around his waist. Anyone watching could see how they literally relaxed into the other’s embrace.
“I’ll be there, if Y/N wants me there.” A soft laugh left her mouth and she gently squeezed his waist.
“Of course I want you there. We’ll be there.”
Both Steve and Bridgette nodded before reaching forward and embracing Y/N. After another round of “bye’s” and “see you later’s”, they both walked away.
“I think I’m ready to go as well.” Y/N looked up at Shangqi, her eyes just as bright as they were when she was dancing. As he looked at her, he could feel the small box in his pocket becoming heavier, almost as if it were begging to be presented to her.
“Okay. I’ll take those and we can go and say bye to everyone.” He had only just noticed that in her other hand were her heels which she had undoubtedly gotten rid of while dancing.
He took them from her before pulling away, only to take her hand in his, interlocking their fingers.
It took them longer than expected to say bye to everyone, as they ran into multiple conversations and multiple people asking them if they wanted to take a plate home (they both ended up with plates wrapped with foil in their arms).
As they approached the gate that led out of the backyard, Y/N paused. She handed her plates to Shangqi while simultaneously taking her heels out of his hands.
Upon seeing the grimace on her face as she bent down to put them on, Shangqi placed a hand on her waist, causing her to stop. She looked at him questioningly, her eyebrows furrowing.
“Here.”
Shangqi placed the plates in her hands before bending and wrapping an arm around her legs while the other wound around her back. Effortlessly, he picked her up before crossing the line where the yard and the driveway met.
“You didn’t have to do that.” There was a smile on her face despite her words. It didn't take her long to become completely comfortable against his chest.
“I know. But I wanted to. I had a lot of fun tonight.”
Y/N’s smile widened at his words and she raised her eyebrows.
“I’m glad you did! I did too.” She took a deep breath before continuing. “Do I want to know what my cousins and uncles asked you?”
A laugh left Shangqi’s mouth and he shook his head.
“Nothing too bad. Typical ‘what are your intentions’ questions. Typical threats on my life if I were to hurt you.”
Her eyes widened and her mouth formed an “O”. One of her hands gripped the collar of his shirt gently.
“Now I expected the questions, but I specifically told them no threats! I’m sorry, babe.” Shangqi shook his head again.
“It’s okay. I understand where they’re coming from. Your family loves you and just wants the best for you. I’m glad they liked me enough to invite me to another cookout!”
Her hand moved from his collar to gently cupping his cheek, her thumb moving across his cheek in soothing motions. Instinctually, Shangqi leaned his head further into her palm.
Y/N still couldn’t shake the almost suffocating feeling of joy she had felt when watching her family embrace Shangqi with open arms. Her cheeks had begun hurting a while ago from how much she had smiled. But now, hearing Shangqi express his own joy in being invited to this cookout and the next one had her smile widening even more, if that were even possible.
“You know I love you.”
She hadn’t noticed they had made it to their car; she had been too busy staring into the love of her life’s eyes.
“And I love you more.” Shangqi responded before leaning forward and connecting their lips.
It didn’t matter how many times they had kissed, it still made stars appear behind both of their eyelids.
They only pulled away when they heard a car’s horn followed by Bridgette’s voice yelling bye out of her window as her and Steve pulled away from the house. Y/N waved a hand, yelling a goodbye back before turning back to Shangqi.
Shangqi gently set Y/N on her feet before unlocking the door and holding it open for her.
“Your chariot, my lady.”
She laughed softly before lowering herself into the car, looking up at him once she was seated.
“Thank you, my love.” They both smiled at each other before Shangqi closed the door, jogging around to the driver's seat.
It didn’t take long until they were pulling away from the curb. The entire car ride back to their shared apartment, Shangqi continuously went through his and Steve’s conversation. And every time he looked over at Y/N, who’s sleeping figure rested against the door, he could feel himself growing closer to an answer to Steve’s question.
When do you plan on doing it?
He glanced over at Y/N once again right as her hand blindly felt around for his. Once she found his hand, she locked their fingers together, a content smile appearing on her face before she fell back asleep.
I don’t have an exact date, but I know that I can’t go one second longer without becoming hers, and her becoming mine.
**********************
“Those two are so in love with each other. Like the epitome of ‘in love’.”
Bridgette’s voice was soft as she looked over at her husband, a knowing smile on her face. Steve glanced over before looking back at the road, his head nodding in agreement.
“They are. It won’t be long until they’re engaged.”
Bridgette let out a soft laugh as she readjusted herself in her seat.
“Exactly. Y/N is already planning on asking him.” At her words, Steve quickly looked over, his eyebrows furrowing.
“Wait...Shangqi is also planning on proposing. He even has a ring.”
Bridgette met his eyes, her own eyebrows furrowing.
“Well so does Y/N. She showed it to me!” They both sat in silence for a few seconds before breaking out into laughter.
They weren’t laughing at Y/N and Shangqi, but rather their actions; and it was mainly because the same thing had happened to them.
“Wow. Those two are smitten with each other. But they both deserve each other; they both deserve something good.”
Steve could only nod in agreement to Bridgette’s words.
Despite Shangqi’s nervous response to Steve’s question from earlier, he knew that the kid would pop the question soon. He looked too enamoured with Y/N for him to continue to live life without promising his heart to her. And he knew that his cousin would ask the same question, and soon as well. Y/N was headstrong, and knew what she wanted.
Yeah, he was looking forward to receiving their invite to the wedding.

Once again, I hope you all enjoyed this oneshot that started as a drabble but eventually ended up being 3k words!
OH! Also! I have some big news coming tomorrowwww!!!
Stay safe, y’all!

Tumblr media
your eyes ran across the white board that was hanging on the wall, a marker on your hand while the other held a clipboard that had crazy amounts of money next to a fighters name.
you don’t really enjoy the fighting scene but xialing does so when she offered you this job after leaving her fathers regimen you decided to accept it. it was fun. watching people and creatures from all around the world and universe fight against each other for fun but what you like the most about this job is that it paid the bills so you can’t really complain about it.
you finish writing a competitors name when xialing enters the office the both of you share.
“are you fighting tonight?” you ask after seeing her wrap her knuckles.
“yup, you should watch it.” she says. “you’ll like this one” she adds with a smirk.
you sigh and a tiny smile spreads around your cheeks. “is it against wong? i kinda want to bet to that.” xialing takes her shoes off and puts them next to her desk, she claps her hands and smiles while shaking her head. she takes your left wrist, pulling you to the door. you huff and throw the clipboard and the marker on a tiny table next to the door.
why is she so demanding for you to watch this fight? you’ve seen her fight multiple times that at this point you know how to fight just by watching her— and also staying with wenwu for so many years had it’s perks, you didn’t need anyone to defend you, not anymore—
you try to follow her fast walking, almost tripping with your own feet.
“cheer for me.” she smiles.
“i always do!” you push her with your shoulder and xialing laughs.
her opponents name was announced and when you turned your head towards them you couldn’t believe your eyes.
it’s him, looking at his sister then back to you. your eyebrows frown and you break in cold sweat. before you could do anything jon jon gave the signal to start fighting.
you never liked seeing him fight, it didn’t matter if it was only training or a real fight but you never enjoyed it. it hurt seeing him full of purple spots covering all over his tan skin.
and it didn’t help that his own sister was kicking his ass.
when xialing gave him a really hard kick his eyes searched for someone under the ring, you followed his sight line and landed your eyes on a girl with neon green pants. she made a face of pain and started to cover her eyes with her hands and all because xialing wouldn’t stop giving him a hard time so you decided to leave. now you understood why she wanted you to see her fight.
your hand tried to wipe the tears that had accumulated on yours eyes after closing the door of the office you were previously in. you definitively can’t believe that after all these years he finally decided to show up and you hate the way your heart beats faster after seeing him.
“i thought you were over it.” xialing’s voice sounds behind you.
“says the one who couldn’t stop throwing punches at him.” you talk back.
she sighs at your answer. “sorry, i should’ve told you he was here.” she pats your shoulder as she passes by you and you groan. xialing sits on top of her desk and plays with her fingers. “and i think i should tell you that he’s coming here right now.”
you shake your head. “what?”
the door opens showing members of the golden daggers carrying shangqi’s body. they leave him on the couch that’s on the middle of the room, after them the girl with the neon green pants comes in with a huge stack of money on her hands.
she looks at you and the gasps. “you’re the girl from the picture!” she points at you, making xialing turn her head.
“w-what picture?” you ask trying not to sound too nervous.
she opens her waist bag and pulls out a polaroid then places the stack of money inside the bag. she extends her hand and motions for you to take the polaroid.
you turn it around and the sides of your lips quirk up into a tiny smile. it’s a photo of you and him, he was 16 and you were 14, it was a week before he left. and what made that photo so special was that he was holding your hand behind his back so no one would notice it.
it was also taken on the day you and him shared feelings for the each other.
“why were you carrying that?” shangqi groans from his place at the couch.
“sorry.” she mumbles. “i could tell you didn’t want to leave it back at san francisco so i took it when you weren’t looking.”
you sit next to xialing, eyes still looking at the picture. you were so absorbed in your own world that you didn’t notice the siblings arguing.
your eyes immediately traveled to ring that has been in your finger for so many years that you don’t even remember the last time you took it out.
“he wants our pendants and the ring, he already has mine.” that’s the only thing you get to hear from the argument.
“why?” you ask without looking up, still staring at the picture. he stops talking and takes a good look at you.
shangqi huffs as his hands go over his head, scratching his scalp in frustration. “i-i don’t know, but one thing is sure, he’s coming for the both of you.”
when your best friend was just about to speak the alarms went off. xialing takes your free hand and pulls you towards a secret exit. jon jon joins before the door closes. “wait!” you shout, realizing that shangqi and his friends were being left behind. he turns after hearing your voice and only manages to see your worried face.
the secret exit which turned out to be an elevator starts going down. “we have to go back!” you say while reaching for the button to stop the elevator but xialing slaps your hand away.
“he deserves it! he left us at our own luck and never took time out of his day just to see if we were still alive!” she screams back at you.
your stare right at her eyes and she does the same with yours. “please.” you beg. “it’s you’re brother and he’s—“
“the guy you love?” she mocks. “fine! but i’m doing it just for you.” xialing nods towards jon jon, he then stops the elevator.
the elevator goes up instead and after just a few seconds it’s doors open, you and xialing step out while jon jon stays there. she runs to a broken window and jumps out.
jus when you were going to do the same, one of the members of the ten rings passes by the window and sees you. “shit.” you mumble.
you always hated being chased by them, they would never stop and that made you hate them with your whole being. it didn’t help that the golden daggers facility had the hallways placed like a maze.
turning to the left you could clearly see shangqi and the death dealer fighting. you ran towards them as fast as you could and pushed the death dealer with your whole body off of shangqi making you both roll on your backs and ending on the same pose spiderman often used.
more of wenwu’s men arrive and one of them takes your hand and tries to pull the ring off your finger. you try to pull your hand back but another member punches your side making you let go. the punch took must of the air out of your lungs.
“i’m surprised y/n.” wenwu’s voice fills the room. “still holding onto that ring uh?”
[***]
your mind didn’t have any thought other than wenwu must be out of his mind. there’s no way shangqi and xialing’s mother is alive.
“penny for you thoughts?” shangqi says next to you.
“do you believe him?” you ask while running your finger in circles on the spot the ring his mother gave you used to be. he doesn’t say anything back. “what are we going to do? i don’t think it’s safe to go.”
a few moments of silence pass by until you see him pulling out your ring out of his pocket.
“xialing thinks it might be true but me? you know there’s no way my mother is alive.” he extends the ring to you. he places the ring on your palm. “i always thought you didn’t keep it.”
you shrug and a breathy laugh leaves your mouth. “i loved your mother too, she took me in when no one else wanted, i would never throw it away.”
after hearing your words he nods, shangqi sees your put the ring back in place and holds his gaze on the purple crystal that got you into this mess. and he realizes that you haven’t said anything about him leaving, and it makes him wonder, would’ve been better if he came back for xialing and for you?
“i’m sorry.”
you scoff. “you’re sorry? just sorry? you never came back! i waited for you so many years but you know what was the worst part? your father took me as your replacement!”
he felt like his insides were burning, he didn’t know his own father did the same to you.
“i just wanted the death dealer to kill me after every mission, he never gave me a free day. your father used me to kill others and if i refused well, it wasn’t pretty so no, i can't forgive you and for so many years I wanted to search for you after i left but now i can't even look at you.” after your final words there's complete silence.
shangqi takes your wrist just like his sister did earlier on and forces you to sit next to him on his childhood bed. he bring you closer to his chest and puts his free hand on the back of your head making you press against his body.
“i want to forgive you because i-i still love you.” you whispered, afraid that his father would hear.
shangqi applied more pressure to your body, melting in each other’s arms. he places his forehead against yours looking directly to your eyes.
“i still love you too.”

A Power Struggle (2)
A/N: Second part! Likely the last part. Not sure about another part or anything like that. Undecided!
First part: A Power Struggle 1
Pairing: Shang-Chi x Stark!Reader; Platonic!Bucky x Stark!Reader; Platonic!Sam x Stark!Reader
Warnings: swearing, flirting/innuendos, threats, violence/fighting, dubious drug use.
Summary: Now that you’re in the club, who is the Power Broker?
Tumblr media
Skelly pushed the door open and stood in front of it, gesturing for you to walk inside.  Looking into the room, all you could see was a sofa, a table, and what looked like a conference phone sitting on top of it. You looked up to Skelly and nodded to the phone.
“The phone is a boss?”
“They’ll call you,” he answered, once again gesturing for you both to enter.
You entered first with Shangqi close behind you. The room had no windows, and no other doors except for the one you had just walked through. Skelly left the room and shut the door behind him. Once it was locked you glanced over to Shangqi who seemed to be losing a little bit of that outward confidence as a gut feeling started to creep through him and tell him something was wrong.
You looked around the room before settling on the edge of the sofa. Scooting even closer to the phone, you grabbed the phone and scoffed, “This shit is ancient. I’m almost offended.”
“Do you even know how to work tech that isn’t in your Stark realm of expertise?” He teased as he sat next to you and leaned back, arm draped across the back of the sofa as he surveyed the room again. “You feel anything?”
“First of all? Fuck you.” You remarked, not hearing him mumble ‘that’s the plan’ under his breath as you stopped to feel for any extra vibrations. “No…no, I don’t.” You frowned, “I can barely feel Skelly beyond the door. That’s weird.”
“Why is that weird?”
“It’d be stronger,” you murmured. “Unless he’s that far down the hall, but….anyway,” you shook your head and tapped on your ear. “I’m not hearing anything now.”
“Me neither,” Shangqi said after a moment.
“EMP,” you sighed and nodded to yourself. “This Broker’s the real deal.”
Shangqi hummed in response and kept his eyes locked on the door. There was something in his gut telling him that this wasn’t going to go how they planned. He wondered if there was something in the room that was blocking your powers, and he wondered why they were made out and brought to the back so quickly. Even with you being a Stark, him wearing the rings, this all seemed to move suspiciously fast.
The phone rang and he looked to you, watching as you leaned forward to lift the phone off the receiver again and press a few buttons. His eyes narrowed watching a bead of sweat form by your hairline.
“Are you good?” He questioned.
“Hot in here,” you muttered and cleared your throat. “So, are we speaking to the Power Broker, or does Skelly just like theatrics?”
An undistinguishable voice chuckled before carrying on the conversation, “Typical Stark to make light of a situation they’re in no control of.”
You shrugged your shoulders, more sweat dripping down the sides of your face as you felt your shoulders sag and it was somehow harder to hold yourself up.
“I’m in plenty control. Or do you not know who I am?”
“Oh, I know who you are,” they continued. “Is it getting hot in there, Stark? Are you doing okay?”
Shangqi looked to you and sat at the edge of the sofa, grabbing your shoulders as you started to slump over and fight to keep your eyes open, “What the hell is going on?”
“Stark’s just experiencing a tiny little micro dose of a toxin. Non-lethal, but it is a bitch to work through. I just can’t have her bringing the place down on a whim because she doesn’t like what she hears. So, I suppose I’m dealing with the leader of the Ten Rings now, aren’t I?”
Shangqi nodded, “You are. And you’ll regret what you just did to her. I don’t take kindly to anyone disrespecting my family.”
There was a laugh before a throat was cleared, “Oh, you were serious.”
You looked down at your hands, then at the phone and it clicked. As Shangqi reached for the phone to bring it to his ear and really give this person a piece of his mind, you quickly grabbed his bicep and told him it was the phone. He nodded in understanding and set his arm down, his attention mostly on helping you to sit back against the sofa and save your strength.
“You’re right, you know,” the Power Broker continued as he checked on you, eyes locking on the door as he saw shadows shifting through the crack beneath it. “I am dealing with the new leader of the Ten Rings. I know for a fact it isn’t you, Shangqi.”
“You’re mistaken,” he said. “I have the rings.”
“But you don’t hold that power, not the power your father had. You don’t have the spine for it,” they continued. “I know the true leader. I know who does. And as for your little girlfriend, there?” They laughed, “(Y/N) Stark, no matter what pain she’s been through, would never so boldly defy everything she stood for as she claims. And I know she’s still close with our new Captain America and Winter Soldier. I hope that doesn’t worry you, Shangqi. You don’t think your new love is going to run away with a newer, familiar model, do you?”
Shangqi’s jaw tightened as he slowly stood up, unbuttoning the top two buttons of his shirt and shaking his arms out, “You’re getting off topic.”
“And you’re out of time.”
The phone line went dead. As the door was thrown open, he realized they were rushing in with too many different guns and rifles pointed at the both of you for him to feel comfortable even making one move and putting you in danger. His hands slowly went up as instructed, and you slowly sat up, head on wobbly shoulders as you outstretched your hand, but nothing happened.
“Oh, powers not working there, Stark?” Skelly laughed. “This is our special room. There’s vibranium shavings in the paint.”
“Fuck off,” you slurred as you continued sitting there. “Gonna kill us? Do it.”
“Not yet,” Skelly replied as he approached you, a pair of slim, shining handcuffs hanging from his hand. “Someone wants to see you two alive first.”
Your ability to feel any vibrations at the moment ceased, and you knew they had saved some of that vibranium they had to make handcuffs specially designed for you. You wondered how they knew just how to get you, but you felt far too weak to really start digging or thinking about who could be behind this.
Shangqi was less than thrilled with how this was turning out, and he feared what they had in place if they had already accounted for you and were ready to stop you. He feared what else they had in store. As they approached him with guns raised and ordering him to take his rings, he thought back to his father. His father was unstoppable for how long? Granted, there weren’t guns for most of those years, but even now, even in the present, he was still a force to be reckoned with, a name that sparked paralyzing fear.
And here was Shangqi, a soft valet with a soft spot for karaoke, boba, his sister, his best friend, and you.
His father wouldn’t stand for this. His father wouldn’t be taken in, and while his father could truly be an awful man, his father never gave up when it came to his family.
Shangqi shouted in anger and he impressed even himself. He grabbed one rifle and aimed it at the ceiling as the man started firing. He sidestepped the other rifle pointed at him, and grabbed that too. He used both rifles as bats to both men before throwing them at the hands of the others, shouting for you to get down.
That wasn’t difficult, given your weakened state. You dropped to the floor easily, and so he whipped his arms out from his sides, the rings floating in the air and acting as a whip to slam every single man in that room back against the walls. He ran to you, stepping on many men without a care before he picked you up and slipped your arms over his head and around his shoulders.
“Stay on my back,” he said as prompted you to jump up and lock your legs around him. “We’re getting out of here.”
“Smooth moves, boo!” You replied as you held on as tightly as you could. “Is it hot in here or is it you?”
“You know you were drugged, right?”
You hummed, “You’re pretty hot, though.”
He chuckled and returned the sentiment that you were just as hot, if not hotter, than he was. He ran down that narrow hallway and skidded to a stop when he saw the same bodyguard from before. He threw a punch to his stomach, then face, and a devastating knee to his face before shooting the rings in another direction at yet another guard before retrieving them and running.
Shangqi grabbed a banner and jumped off of one of the balconies, swinging and sliding down until you were back in the main hall. Once he landed he quickly squatted down to avoid a blow to the face. When he stood back up he was kicked from the side, and he could hear you shout in pain taking a punch to your ribs from the back.
He grabbed you with one hand and swung you over to his left side. Holding you there, he’d pirouette around your attackers and dodge as much as he could until he had an opening to attack. Once they were rid of, he ran out of that building as fast as he could. There was no time to wait for the valet, as it seemed like potential attackers were everywhere, and he kept running with you.
“Water,” You muttered as you saw a fountain. “Take me to the fountain.”
“What? Right now? We gotta—“
“Do it!” You elbowed him, careful not to touch his bare skin with your hands
Shangqi ran over to the fountain and sat you down on the edge. You leaned over and stuck your hands in. He noticed you were washing your hands and he was quickly piecing together that you were getting rid of the toxin you were dosed with. He glanced around and saw cars were being loaded up with what he assumed were about to be more attackers for the both of you.
You breathed slowly as you stood up, hands still cuffed in front of you as you took a deep breath and shut your eyes.
“Don’t try to take them off. You said it’s vibranium, right?”
You nodded, “Everything has a breaking point, and I don’t think it’s pure vibranium.”
“Why?”
You smirked slightly to yourself, “I’ve got a feeling.”
You used your powers with as much strength as you could. Though it was wearing on you, you knew you needed to be rid of this in order to be remotely useful in your escape. You had just enough strength to crack what you knew was only vibranium fused with something else on those handcuffs. The crack was enough for Shangqi to use his own strength to break the handcuffs off of you.
Now free of them, he told you that you both needed to run as fast as you could.
“Can you?”
You nodded before feeling a dizzying feeling and quickly shaking your head.
“It’s okay, it’s okay,” He nodded and glanced around, then looked to you and made you climb on his back again.
Once you were secured, he used the rings and launched himself into the air. You shrieked that this was not how you intended this night to go as he kept jumping around to gain some distance. When he felt you both had enough distance, he stole a motorcycle. He put the one helmet on your head, causing you to coo and say he was a sweet, adorable thief before he took off speeding back to the hotel.
On the way there you squinted and saw a familiar bike in the distance. Glancing up, you saw wings, and you immediately smacked Shangqi’s thigh as he drove and pointed ahead of you.
“Bucky!” you shouted. “See him?”
“I see him,” Shangqi nodded and sped towards him. Spotting the two of you, Bucky made a sharp, quick turn on the bike after Shangqi drove passed him, and he sped up to catch up to the two of you.
“Your feed went dead and Red Wing caught them sending in more guards. We came here to get you. You guys good?”
“She got dosed with something,” Shangqi explained. “Where are we going?”
“Circle back, then regroup at the hotel. We’ll leave,” Bucky shouted. He reached into a pocket on the chest of his jacket and pulled out another earpiece. He handed it to Shangqi, who slipped it in easily after tossing the other one aside. Bucky looked to you and nodded, “Hang tight over there, Stark.”
“I am!” You shouted with a nod, “He’s hot!”
Bucky made a face, “The hell was she hit with, ecstasy?”
Shangqi shrugged, “No idea. Not sure I want to know.”
~*~
You all made sure your trails were clean before you went back to your hotel. Sam landed on the roof and went straight to the room where he met the three of you. They were mostly cleaned up for a quick getaway just in case. They just needed to grab a few things, and Shangqi was quickly replacing some articles of clothing so he was less recognizable.
You were sitting on the bed and holding your head, groaning that using your powers to get free was a horrible mistake. Sam took notice of you, shook his head, and went to the first aid kit.
“What happened, she slowed down, fever, muscle weakness?” He asked Shangqi.
Bucky answered before he did, “And horniness, apparently.”
“…Great,” Sam nodded and pulled out a needle. “I’m hitting her with adrenaline. We gotta go.”
“Is that going to hurt her?” Shangqi asked quickly as he grabbed a sweater for you to throw over your dress and a pair of sneakers to shove on your feet.
“Just enough to get her back so we can go,” Sam said after plunging the needle into your chest. “You good to go?”
After a few seconds of silence you gasped and sat upright. The feeling of adrenaline coursing through your body gave you new energy to get up and get the hell out of there. You quickly threw on the clothes your boyfriend grabbed for you, grabbed your bag, and ran out of the building with them.
The four of you left the building and made it to the lobby only to see some guards from the event. Sam grabbed your arm and started walking ahead with you, laughing and acting like he was telling jokes. Bucky slammed the baseball cap down more on his head and took out his phone, pretending to show Shangqi something as they walked a couple feet behind you.
You had mostly slipped by them, but when Shangqi lifted his hand to point at something on Bucky’s phone, the jingling of the rings hidden under his bomber jacket set all the men’s eyes on him. Expecting the worst to come, you quickly spun around. Your hands shot forward just as Bucky grabbed Shangqi’s arm and quickly dove to the side. Power pulsed from your hands as you knocked all of them back, sending them flying to the very back of the lobby while their guns started to disintegrate from all of the vibrations.
Once Shangqi and Bucky were up on their feet, they ran to join you and Sam in your waiting car. Sam hit the gas the second the door slammed behind Shangqi and was racing back to the airport to get on the jet and get out of there.
Bucky sighed and took out his earpiece, “Everyone good?”
Shangqi nodded, “Good. Babe?”
You nodded, “Fine.”
“I’m good too, since no one asked,” Sam said.
“I said everyone, you baby,” Bucky shook his head. “That went south fast.”
“They expected her,” Shangqi said as he watched you sit in the front seat, face scrunched up as you thought about how everything went wrong so fast. “Not a lot of vibranium, but they had enough to dampen her powers — or stop vibrations? Not really sure how —-“
“The vibranium absorbs the vibrations. No vibrations, I’ve got nothing,” you explained quickly. “Someone knew that. They also knew I was still talking  to you two. I don’t remember that being super public, and I’ve hidden that I’m rebuilding. They even knew Shangqi wasn’t really leading the Ten Rings.  So who could know that?”
Sam shook his head, “I don’t know. We never said shit to anyone.”
“Yeah, well, they know somehow,” Bucky sighed. “Sorry, Stark. We shouldn’t have put you in that mess.”
“See, well, told you I’m not great at undercover,” You responded. “It’s okay. Sorry we couldn’t find out anything on the Power Broker for you.”
“No, no, it’s good. This is more than we knew before,” Sam added. “Now we know they know you pretty well. They know a little something about your boy, too.   That narrows it down a lot.”
“Yeah, Stark, so how many enemies ya got?” Bucky joked.
You groaned, “Don’t even start.”
~*~
On the jet, Bucky and Sam had just finished kicking each other for more leg room, and you wondered if they were at a point in their lives where this was the norm, or if they were just going to shut up and kiss the tension away because it was getting ridiculous.
You sat next to Shangqi, who had headphones on and his eyes closed, but given the soft humming coming from him and the way his head barely noticeably bobbed, you knew he was awake.  You reached over and slipped your hand into his to give it a squeeze. He opened one eye to look at you, then put his headphones around his neck.
“Hey,” he said quietly. “Feeling better?”
You nodded, “Yeah, I think it’s out my system. The adrenaline helped. Um…thank you.”
He looked confused, “For what?”
“Today,” you explained. “I kind of failed you back there.”
“You didn’t fail me,” He shook his head. “We didn’t know that whoever this Power Broker is knew we weren’t who we were pretending to be, or how predictable you are in grabbing anything remotely technological.”
“Not that predictable,” you mumbled and caught him raising an eyebrow. “Okay. Shut up.” While he chuckled you went on, “Still. You…you really came out, took charge, saved the day, saved our lives. So thanks, Shangqi. You’re going to be a pretty good Avenger.”
He grinned and leaned over to kiss you. Your eyes fluttered close as his lips pressed against yours and you could still taste the faintest hint of rum on his lips from earlier in the day. When he pulled away he kissed your lips once more with a quick peck before returning to his original position in his chair.
“And, about that Ten Rings business,” you began. “You said your sister was shutting it down, right? Did you call her?”
“No answer,” Shangqi said quickly. “Said she might visit San Francisco soon the last time I spoke to her, but…”
You hummed, “Feel like we need to make a detour somewhere?”
“You think she lied to me?” He retorted.
“Whoa, no.” You said quickly, not surprised at how defensive he got over his little sister. “I’m offering to go check on her.”
“Oh, sorry,” he nodded. “Maybe we should check on her club first, see if she, if she’s there. Maybe she cleared out the compound already and is letting the stories just…get out there and keep people from starting a power war.”
“Right, you’re probably right,” You nodded, part of you knowing that he was just delaying going to that compound in the event that he was wrong and that his sister had very much settled that power struggle by taking it all for herself. “We’ll go to Macau first.”

REQUEST: Can you make a shang chi imagine for being Shaun's friend and telling him you have all the powers of Sun Wukong because you have his magic staff
Imagine being Shang-Chi's friend who keeps a small secret from him: you have the powers of Sun Wukong.
Being distracted during a fight was the last thing on Shang-Chi's mind: literally and figuratively. The unexpected situation, however, required him to.
Truthfully, anyone would have been distracted by a tall, muscular man flying across the room at an unnatural speed. The man crashed against the wall and landed on pieces of broken glass. Shang-Chi's confusion forced him to look away from his opponent and focus on an unknown figure in the background. From what he could see, the one responsible for such brute strength was a severely average, thin woman. To make the entire ordeal even funnier, he recognized the said silhouette.
"(Y/N)?" he asked in shock.
You simply grinned seeing his bewilderment.
"You're not the only one allowed to have secrets, Shang-Chi." He never told you his real name.
"There's too many of them!" Xialing's comment brought you two back to the current moment. She wasn't wrong: Wenwu's men seemed to flow into the room at a constant speed. The odds were everything but in your favor. From what you could see, you were outnumbered by 1:10 - less than a welcoming ratio. But it wasn't anything you couldn't deal with.
You tightened your grip on the antique, decorated staff you held. Turning it quickly in your hands, a swift and strong breeze started to gather around the room, stronger with each circular motion you did. The said controlled tornado swept the Ten Rings men off their feet and threw them out of the broken window. You were free, for now. It wasn't all troops Wenwu sent after you, it wasn't going to be a long time before another swarm traps you.
"We don't have much time," you said firmly, helping Katy to her feet. She stared at you the same way someone stares at a terrifying stranger.
"What the hell was that," Shaun wasn't going to let it go. Not that you expected anything else.
"Long version or short version?" you asked but did not plan on letting him answer. "The staff of Sun Wukong has been in my family for ages. Now I'm the Monkey King, as my father was before me."
"Why didn't you say anything?"
"Okay, Shaun, I don't think you're the one to talk," Katy cut him off.
"Look, guys, I'm sorry, really. We're friends and I betrayed your trust but I never thought it was something I would have to tell you. I didn't expect I would be given the artifact so soon too."
You could hear the echoing of quick steps coming from the hall. There was only one way through this situation: out. And quite literally at that.
"Hold on to me, it's going to be a long jump."
It was one of those moments Shaun and Katy could give each other a quick look and immediately know they were thinking the same thing: You were always the "cool" friend and somehow managed to become even better.

Author's note: This is pretty short as I didn't want it to be a cliche/awkward Hollywood reveal. I was ecstatic to incorporate actual Chinese folklore into a fic. Sun Wukong, a.k.a the Monkey King, is an important figure in Chinese folklore, mostly known through the national epopoeia "Journey to the West" in which he, a monk, a humanoid pig and a water demon embark on a journey to retrieve holy scriptures as a mean of redemption for their past sins. According to folklore, he was a trickster known to be super strong, could shapeshift into over 70 animals and objects, replicate himself, partially manipulate weather (among other things). There are various film adaptations of the novel which I recommend you little bears watch if you want to learn more about the Chinese classic! Also, there's a Monkey King video game coming out in 2023!!

Hello there :) If you feel like it, I would like to request prompt #3 with Shangqi x Avenger!reader (maybe stark!reader?) if possible? If not, just good ol' regular reader. Thanks in advance!!!
hiya !! i hope i fulfilled your request ! i’m not so sure why this was so hard for me to write. i still hope this was good enough for you !! enjoy :)
title: secrets
you had practically begged your father to let you accompany your friend on a mission, he hesitated at first. claiming you didn’t know him all the well. which it wasn’t true, you knew shangqi longer than you told your father. partially because if he knew he would probably fly over the country to meet the poor guy.
of course, you’re thankful to have tony as your father but sometimes he was just a bit too much. that’s why you moved across the country just to get a break from your old man. and that’s when you met shangqi. it was a blessing really, you led your superhero life behind and started anew. that was until the truth of shangqi came out.
that’s how you ended up with him in his mothers village. the fight was over now, the two of you sat on the bank of the river. you stared out at the water, your head resting on shangqis shoulder. you two didn’t say anything, just enjoying the night before returning home.
he was thankful for your company, truthfully he didn’t want you to join him. afraid of possibly losing you, that’s something that he knew he couldn’t live with. not when you were his everything. you made it so easy for him to forget about his troubles. he knew he loved you, but he was scared to admit it. what if he lost you?
“why did you come with me?” he asked, suddenly. you hummed, raising your head. “because, you’re my friend. and you needed my help.” you answered, then looking back at the water. “but i lied to you.” you chuckled, shrugging lightly. “we all have our secrets. i know one day you would’ve told me.” to you it wasn’t that big of a deal. you had your secrets too, after all being the daughter of tony stark had its downside. you rested your head back on his shoulder, his hand gently laying on your knee. “y/n” he hummed. “yes?”
“i think i’m in love with you and i’m terrified”
you didn’t say anything, and that scared shangqi. maybe he just ruined a perfectly good friendship because he can’t hide his growing feelings for you. you didn’t move, still staring out at the water. “please say something.” he begged. you wrapped your arms around him, pulling him into a tight hug. you didn’t know if had felt the same way you did. “why are you scared?” you asked. he shrugged, you pulled away getting a clear look at his face. “i lied to you, y/n. how could i not be scared?” you shook your head, seeing tears in his eyes. “don’t say that.” you smiled, “i lied to you too. my father is tony stark” you finally admitted. he stared at you. “what?” you nodded, tears now forming in your eyes. “i’m an avenger. or, i was. i didn’t tell you because i was afraid of my past.” he chuckled, looking away to wipe his eyes. “i guess we both have to work on not keeping secrets.” you laughed, “i guess so”.

๑彡 an edited version of this is now available on my AO3 :]
It was only supposed to be a mundane, non-Avenger type of day.
Miko even took the liberty to officially file a notice of absence, instead of just flying over to the opposite coast without letting faers/her teammates know. Granted, fae/she only stuck a sticky note on the fridge and called it a day, but fae/she knew it’d do the trick.
I’ll be in California for two weeks. Do not contact me unless the world is ending. — Miko
In faers/her defense, the Avengers, as a team, is currently going through a transitional period. Thus, as a result, it’s quite tricky to get away for some well-deserved personal time off. If fae/she had gone the legal way of filing a leave of absence, there’s no telling when it’d get approved. More likely than not, another national threat would’ve emerged by then. (Fae/She knows how those antagonists are — they just show up without warning, whenever and wherever they want. None of them are as courteous and considerate as that Phantom Thief Kid in manga, much to faers/her dismay.)
And so there goes faers/her hope of having a peaceful vacation — literally already out the window on the morning of faers/her second day. (Even worse because this is technically faers/her first day to be out-and-about, considering fae/she slept all day yesterday due to flight fatigue.)
Fae’s/She’s too far back to hear what they are demanding to the dude in a red and gray jacket, but faers/her instincts are telling faer/her it won’t end well. There are easily four aggressors in total, although one is still blending in with the other passengers until their cue comes.
Miko can’t judge whether the dude in red and gray jacket can fight since his figure is somewhat blocked from faers/her view; but, even if he can, the odds is still one-to-three: they aren’t really in his favor— Oh.
"Excuse me," fae/she gestures to the man next to faer/her to let faer/her through. Based on how he looks, and how he’s staring intently at the fight that just broke out with a serious look, he seems to be with the three men that are currently scuffling with the dude in a red and gray jacket. Unfortunately, fae/she can’t take him down before he joins the fight — partly because it’d put faer/her in offense rather than defense.
Truthfully, the stranger in red and gray jacket is handling himself well. However, fae/she isn’t rigorously trained to combat any kind of universal threat just to stand back and watch someone else put their life on the line. Just when fae’s/she’s about to pull faers/her weapon out, though, fae/she felt faers/her phone vibrate from faers/her pocket.
Hey, Miko, are you almost here? Cassie and Luis—
That’s only as far as fae/she has read, unfortunately, because fae/she felt someone pass by faer/her: it was none other than faers/her former seat mate and he’s heading towards the dude in red and gray jacket with a determined look on his face.
"Holy shit," Miko cussed under faers/her breath as fae/she tried to put faerself/herself in between faers/her former seat mate and the stranger clad in red and gray as fast as fae/she can while the bus continues to travel towards its destination.
Once positioned where fae/she wanted, fae/she let faers/her weapon expand. Courtesy to Shuri and her Wakandan tech, faers/her staff has upgraded features. Aside from its ability to elongate (and retract) and cause damage from a single hit, faers/her weapon of choice is stronger than ever with its body now completely made from vibranium and applied technology akin to T’Challa’s Black Panther suit. Furthermore, as per faers/her request, Shuri also kept the "stun gun" feature in faers/her new staff (a handy one, honestly, especially whenever fae’s/she’s trying to avoid a full-blown confrontation).
When Sinra’s standing next the Spider-Man and the Captain Marvel, faers/her weapon don’t seem much — but it does its job. Fae/She just despises it whenever the one fae’s/she’s against can easily split it in half. Kinda like how faers/her former seat mate potentially can.
"Aw, c’mon!" Miko voices faers/her protest when faers/her former seat mate’s amputated arm grew into a sword blade. "Don’t get too worked up now, seat mate."
"Who are you?" The lady that’s presumably friends with the stranger in red and gray asks.
However, before fae/she can even think about replying, someone else already answered on faers/her behalf. "Oh, my god, Sinra’s here! An Avenger’s here!"
"What’s an Avenger doing here in San Francisco?" Miko hears the person behind faer/her wonder under his breath.
"Vacation," fae/she answers in a whisper, "supposedly."
"Give me the necklace," faers/her former seat mate demands, "and no one gets hurt."
"Listen here, mate," Miko hardens faers/her stare at faers/her former seat mate, "I don’t know what’s the deal with that necklace, but if dude was willing to take down three men for it, then I’ll sure as hell help him keep it from you." In instinct, Miko even twirls faers/her baton to signify faers/her acceptance of the challenge — or, rather, faers/her readiness to fight.
"Do you have a backup?" The dude in red and gray asks faer/her after he moves from behind and takes the spot next to faer/her.
"Let’s hope we don’t need one."
Just as it always been, especially for someone like Miko who fights battles for a living, the actual fight is a blur. Fae/She remembers bits and pieces of instances from it, like how faers/her combat partner told the passengers to move to the front of the bus and how fae/she used faers/her staff to completely separate the second half of the extended bus from the first half. However, fae/she can’t remember when faers/her former seat mate (who fae/she heard faers/her partner call “Razor Fist” — which makes perfect sense, but fae/she still prefers the nickname fae/she bestowed him) managed to snatch the necklace from faers/her partner’s neck — nor when he managed to slash faers/her clothes.
"I’m sorry I couldn’t stop him from taking your necklace." Miko apologizes as fae/she watches the other passengers exit the wrecked bus. "I’d still help you get it back, if you’d let me."
"Your clothes is ripped to shreds and you’re worried about my necklace?"
Fae/she turns faers/her head to look at him, with one of faers/her eyebrows raised. Besides being a questioning look, faers/her overall expression can also be read as a look of judgment — as though fae’s/she’s looking at him like he’s crazy. "Well, yeah? I can tell that necklace means a lot to you, you know." As an Avenger, Miko has grown to always put faerself/herself after others. To faer/her, faers/her own interests and welfare always come in second — and ultimately not a major concern. "Plus, I bound my chest this morning, and his blade didn’t cut through the tape, so I know no one can actually see anything."
"That’s true," faers/her combat partner agrees thoughtfully while taking his jacket off. Leaving himself in his white button up, he then hands his red and gray apparel to faer/her, "but here. You should wear this, too, since it’s still cold out."
"Oh, no, no. I couldn’t possibly—"
"Just accept it, it’s okay," he insists by moving his jacket closer. "You wouldn’t be any less of a superhero if you accept help from a civilian once in a while."
Miko, once again, gives him a judging look, albeit this time it’s because fae/she find some of his words questionable. "I highly doubt you’re just a civilian, based on how you took down those three guys with minimal effort, but—" fae/she shrugs— "I wouldn’t force you to tell me."
(Fae/she would never tell him fae/she knows, but fae/she definitely noticed how the tense on his shoulders built and then quickly evaporated as fae/she spoke.)
Silence follows as faers/her words sink in between them. Faers/her current companion seems to have nothing to say — until, eventually, he finally did. ". . . So are you going to take the jacket?"
"Not until you give me your name first," fae/she chuckles lightly, "I think I at least deserve to know that much, don’t you think?"
"Sure, that’s fair." He puts his hand that’s holding onto his jacket down to his side and faces faers/her completely. "Well then—" he offers his other hand for a handshake— "you can call me Shaun."
Miko accepts his formality, "My name’s—"
"Himiko Alfonso Tanaka!" A voice suddenly bellows outside the wrecked bus before fae/she can say faers/her name. Fae/she doesn’t even have look out the windows to know for certain that it’s Scott Lang.
"—Yup. That’s my full name." Fae/she chuckles as fae/she lets go of his hand, more so at Scott’s perfect timing rather than slight embarrassment. "Feel free to call me Miko, though, that’s what everyone calls me."
"Are you alive in there?!"
Shaun, once again, offers his jacket out to faer/her. "Looks like your ride is here," he nods towards the windows behind faer/her and waves his empty hand with a smile.
Miko scoffs in amusement, then takes his jacket at last. "Don’t think you’ll get rid of me that easily." Fae/she turns and begins to walk away while fae/she puts his jacket on. "You’ll see me again soon, Shaun."
"I don’t doubt that," Shaun whispers to himself as he watch faer/her jog down to a parked black car. "See you then, Miko."

It was finally winter break. Everyone around you was packing their bags to return to their hometown or planning vacations to extravagant places the world had to offer. Everyone except for you.
You didn’t have much awaiting you in your hometown. All the people you grew up with essentially got up and left after graduating high school and never looked back. On top of that, your family decided to make plans without you and were expected to return home on Christmas Day. That is, if everything goes well for their flight back home, and you could only hope that the weather conditions were safe to travel in. So you were left with no choice but to hold down the apartment you shared with your roommates.
Once your roommates left you with the apartment, you sighed in relief and plopped down on the couch. You stared at the ceiling for a few moments before deciding to flip on the TV. You were only able to squeeze in a few episodes of the show you were binging before boredom washed over you. Then, you decided to follow an at-home workout video. By the time you finished exercising, you were still bored out of your mind.
The rest of the day revolved around ordering takeout and starting a new show to binge watch. In the middle of watching one episode, your phone chimed to signal you received a text. You grabbed your phone from under the blanket and turned it on. It would be an understatement to say that you were shocked by who sent you the text.
“Good evening,
I hope you are doing well and are receiving the rest you deserve after all your hard work this semester. I know this may seem out of the blue, but there is a pressing issue that I would like to discuss with you in person. Would it be possible to meet you at the cafe on Lime & Lemon St tomorrow morning at 10am? If not, perfectly fine. We can talk over email if you prefer. Please let me know as soon as possible. Thank you and have a wonderful night!
Professor Shangqi”
You lost track of the times you read the text from Professor Shangqi. Your face warmed up and your palms persparated. The professor you had been crushing on the whole semester is requesting to meet up with you outside of school. The smile on your face was as wide as the Cheshire Cat. Then, you suddenly frowned.
What if he wanted to meet up with you because you failed his class? What if he caught on to your crush on him and was going to confront you about it? Your mind was racing with thoughts and you didn’t know if you should cry or throw up or pretend you never received the text and call it a night.
“No,” you exclaimed out loud to yourself. “I should reply. It’d be rude of me not to.” And so, you sent out a quick reply and sent it without thinking twice.
“Hi Professor!
Yes, I can meet with you at that time. I hope that everything is okay on your end. I look forward to meeting with you.”
Time couldn’t move any slower as you waited to hear back from Shangqi. When your phone dinged again, you opened up your messages within a second of receiving the notification.
“Oh, everything is fine. I promise. Just wanted to ask you something that I prefer doing in person. Can’t wait to see you :)”
Now, you were back to smiling and biting your lip. Your fingers danced across your phone screen as you wrote one last message to him.
“Sounds good! I will see you tomorrow. Goodnight professor :)”
Rolling onto your belly, you screamed into the pillow that you were lying down on. You had to pinch yourself in case you were dreaming. Before you knocked out, you read over the text thread, excited you will be getting coffee with the professor you had developed a deep admiration for.
Tumblr media
The next morning, you sat in your car, glancing at your reflection in the tiny mirror above you. Your palms were sweaty against your phone as you checked the time.
9:59am
You started to hyperventilate, considering how close it was to the time you were expected to meet Shangqi. Normally, you were perfectly calm and collected around Shangqi. Yet now, you were on the verge of vomiting because of how nervous you were about going out with him. Was this even considered a date? No. Just a student and professor having a casual business meeting. Right?
Your thoughts were interrupted by the sound of another car pulling into the parking space next to you. You almost yelped when you realized the driver was your professor. As Shangqi turned off the ignition and stepped outside, you took some deep breaths to steady your racing heart beat. When you finally got out of your car, Shangqi glanced in your direction and flashed a sweet smile.
“Hey!” Shangqi called out, sauntering towards you. “Good to see you again.”
“Yeah, likewise,” you responded. You gave him a firm handshake like how you always did when you saw each other. Except this time, the handshake lingered a little too long for it to be professional. You both lightly giggled before anchoring your hands down and brushing fingers.
“Shall we?”
“Yes, let’s go in.” You walked alongside Shangqi until he rushed to open the door for you. A laugh erupted from your belly as you thanked him for the gesture, entering the coffee shop. As you hopped in line, Shangqi briefly glanced down at your backside before following you. He was grateful that you hadn’t turned around, otherwise he would’ve been in for it. Little did he know, you had hoped that he would look at you the way you did with him.
“Lemme guess, you’re gonna order the matcha lavender latte,” Shangqi playfully taunted as you peered up at the menu. You pretended to act offended even though deep down, you were flattered he memorized your favorite coffee drink. Yeah, it technically wasn’t coffee, but it was better than the boring Americanos your professor always drank.
“Of course, I am! Remember, every time I go to a new coffee shop, I have to order their matcha to compare between shops.” Shangqi beamed at how your face glowed while you spoke. “And if I were to guess, you are gonna get your tasteless Americano?” Shangqi adjusted his glasses and turned back to the menu.
“Actually, I think I’ll get the same thing as you. It must be worth the hype if you’re always ordering it. And I’ll have you know, dear, that Americanos are not tasteless.” Your head whipped around when he called you dear. You weren’t sure how you could possibly respond to that without wanting to yank him towards you and kiss him. But the way his eyes met yours made you even more tempted to do so.
“Next in line, please!” A loud voice projected from behind the counter. You both whipped your heads in the direction of the barista, waiting for you to approach the counter. Shangqi made way for you to stroll towards the counter first. Nodding towards him, you proceeded to the counter, reciting your typical coffee order to the barista. He punched the buttons on the screen, waiting for you all to conclude your order. Shangqi came up behind you, lightly cupping your mid back. The unexpected movement sent chills up your spine and your cheeks burned hot enough to keep you toasty in this cold weather.
Shangqi angled towards you. “Make those two matcha lavender lattes.” You simpered, cocking your head towards him. The barista, unbothered by the exchange occurring in front of him, tapped away at the screen.
“Would you like to try any of our pastries or…” his voice dragged out as you scanned the menu.
“The strawberry crepe sounds pretty good,” you mentioned to the barista.
“And I’ll have the chocolate croissant,” Shangqi jumped in. The barista gave the total cost of the order, and as you dug through your bag for your wallet, the professor handed the barista his credit card.
“Wait, I could’ve-”
“No need for that. Besides, I’m the one who invited you here, right?” You nodded in agreement, allowing him to pay for the order. Then, you both waited to the side counter, standing so close that your arms bumped in unison. Without acknowledging the closeness, you both smiled to yourselves, glancing at the ground.
After receiving your orders, you both settled into a cozy corner of the cafe. Shangqi rubbed his hands together to keep warm while you bit into the strawberry that sat atop the crepe. He stared at your lips as they puckered around the strawberry, his mind wandering to the dark depths that he only visited at night. You swallowed the fruit as he chewed on the inside of his cheek. In the blink of an eye, your professor steered himself back on track.
“So you’re probably wondering why I invited you to coffee.”
You shrugged with a small smirk. “Just a bit curious.”
Shangqi laughed, “So the reason I asked you here is because…” He twirled the cup around on the table as if the right words would magically appear. Well this may not be a surprise to you, but you were my best student. In fact, you received the highest grade out of all of my students.”
You gulped on the lump in your throat, beads of sweat forming on your palms. As much as you wanted to make eye contact while he spoke to you, your nerves got the best of you. Just the sheer thought of looking into his beautiful brown eyes would make you faint.
“I wanted to know if you would be interested in being my TA for the spring?” The muscles in Shangqi’s body tensed while he waited for your response. He relaxed when he saw the twinkle in your eyes. You were smiling so hard you had to hide behind your hand. Moments later, you nodded your head repetitively.
“Yes!” Your cheeks were sore from grinning. “Oh my gosh, yes! Wow, I am truly honored, Professor. Thank you so much!”
Shangqi sighed in relief and raised his cup towards you. “To the fall semester. And now, onto spring semester.” You tapped your cup with his and then simultaneously sipped your drinks. It was refreshing to hear only good news coming from your professor. You hummed happily thinking about how you get to spend more time with him.
Further into the coffee date, you noticed a shift in Shangqi. While you made small talk, he would eye your lips and lick his own. Was it a coincidence that he did that? Were you imagining things? Was he coming onto you? You assumed that you were overthinking everything, yet his every little move made your skin heat up.
Feeling bold, you grazed your foot against Shangqi to test how he would react to it. He didn’t seem phased by it until your foot crept up his leg. His jaw clenched in surprise and he removed his glasses to clean the lens. His imagination still ran wild as you slowly trailed your foot in between his calves.
Perfect. You got him.
To tease him more, you seductively ate the strawberry crepe that you had almost forgotten. You shut your eyes and moaned as the sweet treat hit your tastebuds. Something in Shangqi stirred as your innocent moans filled his ears and he gulped down another swig of his drink. Anything to distract himself from his mind diving deeper into that forbidden place. Meanwhile, you hid your smirk, knowing that you managed to get under your professor’s skin. In a good way, of course.
This continued until everyone in the cafe left for closing. You both took your time leaving the cafe. While Shangqi slid the crumbs off the table with a napkin, you took your time grabbing your bag behind you. It was really obvious that neither of you wanted to leave. Even the tired baristas picked up on you and Shangqi trying to prolong your date.
“Well, that was nice,” you announced once you finally exited the cafe. A wave of sadness washed over you, realizing you won’t be seeing your favorite professor for over a month.
“Yeah, it was a nice date,” Shangqi added, causing your heart to skip a beat. You smiled timidly at him. As much as you wanted to question him about it being a date, you didn’t want to pry. You were appreciative to have spent quality time with him before spending a lonely winter break at your apartment.
“Thank you, by the way,” you began. “For today. Actually, the whole semester. Out of all the professors that I’ve had, you’re my favorite. I can’t wait to be your TA.” Shangqi smiled at you, soaking up your kind words. You reached your hand out, waiting for him to shake it.
“I think we’re past handshakes now.” You lowered your hand slowly. “You’re gonna be my TA so we can be a bit more casual, don’t you think?” You snickered. Shangqi extended his arms and wrapped them around you when you closed the space between you two. You felt secure. You felt home. And you didn’t want to let go of that feeling. Neither did Shangqi.
Your professor pulled away just enough to look into your eyes longingly. The mixture of the nippy air and his comforting embrace caused goosebumps to form on your uncovered skin. His gaze moved down to your lips and his breath decelerated. Then, your voice snapped him back to the present.
“You know something, Professor?” Shangqi’s face plastered with perplexity. “I know you have been staring at my lips the moment we stepped in the cafe.” Shangqi tried to deny you but just ended up tripping over his words. He grew more nervous as he defended himself. It made you titter how the professor that always had a way with words became a blabbing mess over you.
“You can kiss me if you want.”
Shangqi chuckled at your forwardness, but proceeded to move his hands to your face. His rough hands cradled your jawline before leaning in to press his lips on yours. Your heart violently thumped against your chest and your stomach twisted as your lips danced to a beat that felt so familiar. After what felt like a lifetime, he pulled away for fresh air.
Shangqi was awestruck. By you, the kiss…by everything. All he could utter was, “Your lips taste like strawberries.” Yet, he still brought you to a fit of giggles.
“It was the-”
“The crepes. Yeah, I remember.” Like a pair of magnets, your lips were stuck on his again. His thumbs smoothed over your cheeks as you tugged on his winter coat. Your tongues almost simultaneously slipped into each other’s mouths, causing you to gasp as he explored the inside of your mouth. The bitter taste of coffee mixed with the sweetness of the pastry danced along your tastebuds. You craved to memorize the taste of his tongue, to have his lips imprinted on your body.
“Shangqi,” you stammered, as the kiss died on your lips. “I really like you. I know I shouldn’t but I can’t help it.” Now that you finally admitted your feelings for him, you wanted to burst into tears. Your head started to drop, but your professor tilted it back so you could gaze into his brown eyes.
“I really like you too.” Shangqi swiped your hair out of your face so he could bask in all your beauty. He sighed in joy, “God, it feels so good to say it. I have felt things for you ever since the first day. I never thought I would adore someone the way I adore you.” He sniffled, unsure if it was the tears he was fighting back or the cold winter catching up to him. “But, here we are. I’m not ashamed to admit how much I really like you.”
What started off as a short peck turned into another passionate kiss. You felt his lips form into a smile against your own. He nuzzled his nose against yours, causing you to snort quietly. A sound that Shangqi secretly loved.
“I don’t want you to go now. I wish we had more time together.” Shangqi caressed you as if it would be the last time he would ever be able to. A lightbulb in your head abruptly lit up when you remembered that you were basically spending all of winter break alone in your apartment. Perhaps, Shangqi could keep you company.
“My roommates are back home and I have the apartment to myself if you want to come over.”
Shangqi perked up. “Yeah I like that. Just text me the address and I’ll meet you there.” You nodded happily before he kissed you one more time. Both of you locked eyes before heading to your cars. You shared one last subtle laugh before easing your ways into your cars. The shape of his lips still lingered on yours, and you couldn’t wait to touch them again.
Now, you finally had something to look forward to during winter break. More appropriately, someone to look forward to.

hotel california- shangqi
pairings: xu shangqi x past widow!reader warnings: mentions of red room and just a lot of fluff about: sleepover request: clingy fluff with shangqi a/n: im obsessed with shangqi and widow!reader and although this isn’t really centered around that, i wanted to include it
time spent between you and your boyfriend had decreased dramatically ever since he became an official superhero. you went from seeing him and katy for over half the day every day to surviving on minute long phone calls and scarce lazy late night cuddle sessions because he had slipped into bed with you in the late hours of the night. the days that you would spend with only each other practically diminished, and the few hours you got with just each other were treasured like precious stones, stretched out as long as you both could until one or the other was called away.
which was why spending every second with each other on the free day you both had was so important. today was the first time in a long time when you both requested a day off— and actually got it approved. bruce and wong had sworn that the world would be fine without shangqi for the day, and your own team had assured you the case that had come in yesterday was in good hands with your most promising intern. the day was stress-free, your phones on complete silence—except for shangqi’s for emergent calls from nick fury for either or both of you, of course; you never know when a retired widow and the newest avenger are needed.
luckily, today neither of you were. and the skills engraved in you and shangqi were able to remain inside for the day.
your hands had been joined every minute you were in a crowd of people so you wouldn’t lose each other, desperate to savor every second together that you were gifted. frankly, you were both starved of each others’ touch for too long, and neither of you were going to take advantage of the time where you had the opportunity to enjoy it.
after sleeping in a little later than usual, you and your boyfriend had goofed around in the kitchen for a while, making a mess while you attempted to make pancakes, during which you both remembered that you weren’t exactly gifted in the cooking department. this was proven by the gross difference between your destruction of a pancake and shangqi’s own perfectly golden pancake. he had stifled a laugh but refused to let you throw away what you made, taking a proud picture instead.
the next few hours were made up of movie rewatching, ranging from the cheesiest rom-coms you could find to the newest horror movies you had missed. you must have missed at least half the movies displayed on the television from talking with each other and getting distracted by the other.
at some point, you both ended up on the sidewalk, heading to the only shop you knew of that sold the artisanal mango ice cream you had remembered you loved halfway through scream. shangqi had declared you had to have it, and punched in the destination in his gps before you were out the door.
your fingers interlaced without your notice, observing the beauty of san francisco while your arms swung in harmony and you asked your boyfriend how life avenger-ing was going.
“insane,” he answered, “the other day, i walked into a room and found freaking captain america brushing his teeth. i swear i peed myself when he waved at me like it wasn’t sam wilson standing in front of me and i didn’t just die inside a little.”
you laugh, pushing him lightly with your shoulder, “you do realize that’s how people feel when you wave at them, right? haven’t you ever seen the way little kids look at you?”
he blinks, “no.” he looks down at you, as if he’s just realized it, “holy shit, y/n.”
“holy shit indeed, shangqi. you’re a hero,” you squeeze his hand. “really hot one, too,” you add, fanning yourself with your other hand as you lean against shangqi’s side. “i’m dating a hero,” you gush, then pause, getting more serious. “you’re amazing, you know that? who else could defeat a huge organization that’s lived for centuries?”
he chuckles, squeezing you closer before pressing his lips to your forehead, “you, for one. don’t think i forgot that time you went mia and then i found out you were just taking down the red room with the black freakin’ widow.”
you pout at him, “can’t you let me compliment you for something amazing that you did?” you whine.
“i just give credit where credit is due,” shangqi shrugs, letting you pull him through the door once you see the sign to the store you’re looking for. “huh, i thought we still had a couple blocks to go.”
“you would literally be lost without me, shangqi,” you mutter playfully, entering the surprisingly crowded shop. “oh, looks like i wasn’t the only one with a mango ice cream craving, huh?”
you feel shangqi pull you closer from behind you, and you begin to walk further into the shop, only for your boyfriend to stop you after a few steps. “let’s not get separated, okay? you know what to do if you do.”
you sigh, shaking your head as you turn to look at him, “i’m not gonna do that.”
“we decided!”
“i was drunk— and honestly, i thought you were kidding!”
with a shake of his head, shangqi leads you further into the store, watching amusedly at your getting distracted by everything the store offered. he only lets go of your hand to open the freezer for the ice cream, but when he reaches for it again, it’s gone, your form lost among the crowd. he shuts the freezer door, ice cream in hand as he looks around for you, unable to find you within the amount of people.
you barely noticed that you’ve wandered off until your hand smacks a random womans’ arm instead of your boyfriend’s when you find a box of candy you’d been searching for forever. you apologize, craning your neck to try and spot your tall boyfriend.
“shangqi?” you call, but his name is lost in the sounds of varied conversations.
you get shoved onto one of the fridges, holding back your reflexes when you feel some random person grabbing your arm by accident. muttering a curse at the fact that you lost shangqi like he predicted, you look around, disappointed when you can’t find him anywhere.
“crap,” you whisper to yourself when you pat the empty pocket where your phone always was, remembering your phone is laying on the counter at your house because shangqi’s phone was all you insisted you needed. you groan when you realize what your only option is at the moment, palm already at your forehead in embarrassment, “how does it go…”
you go back to the nights of karaoke that used to be a normal night for you, unsurpised when the lyrics come back to you quickly. you start with a hum, “and i was thinkin’ to myself, ‘this could be heaven or this could be hell.’”
“then she lit up a candle and showed me the way,” you continue quietly, trying to build up the courage for what will surely be the most embarrassing experience of your life. “there were voices down the corridor,” you say a little louder, ignoring the strange looks you’re already receiving, “i thought i heard them say…”
“welcome to the hotel california!” you sing, song wavering in your voice, but clearer. “such a lovely place—”
you stop when you realize the whole store is quiet now, staring at you. you relax when you hear another familiar voice, turning when you realize where it’s coming from. “such a lovely place,” you mumble, about ready to just leave the place and wait for your boyfrend outside before you hear a familiar voice through the silence.
“such a lovely face,” shangqi sings, a huge grin taking over his face when he meets your eye.
sighing, you rush over to him, tightly grabbing his hand when you finally reach him and pulling him close to you, heading towards the cashier. shangqi smiles at the confused customers around him like a pop star after climbing off a stage.
“god, that is the worst possible way to find each other when we get lost.”
“it can’t be that bad if it worked,” shangqi shrugs, “and it worked very well.”
you laugh breathily, shaking your head as you get in line, turning to him. “i can’t believe i did that,” you grin. “we just performed for a store,” you realize.
“i hope someone got that on video,” shangqi tells you, “we could be next pop star power couple.” he kisses your cheek when they raise in a smile, but you catch his lips before he turns.
“we would be too powerful,” you tell him honestly, pecking his nose when you notice the customer front of you finishing up. “i say we should stick to private concerts, at least for now.” you say as you give the tired cashier a smile, paying for the sweets.
“hm, you’re right, of course.” shangqi agrees once you’re both outside, “i don’t know what i would do without you.”
“you’re lucky you don’t have to know, then.”

The chatter of the well-dressed crown was merely background noise to your own thoughts. The sparkly dresses and expensive accessories were a part of a culture that you would have normally stayed far away from… but being here and inserting yourself into said culture was one of the first steps to this mission you had found yourself on.
Every single person received a scrutinizing gaze from your eye, but none of them were worth your time at the moment. This mission hadn’t “started” yet; or rather, it hadn’t become challenging yet. It was easy enough sneaking into the theatre and blending in with the other theatre-goers; the real challenge had only just walked in.
You let your eyes glide smoothly over the man you were here to see, raising the flute of champagne to your lips and turning your face in the opposite direction. If he saw your face before you could get the information you needed, the entire mission would go south immediately. The gazes of those around you simply passed over you, a trick you had learned early on in life.
The next destination was already in mind, and it had you strolling leisurely in its direction. The first step was completed: locating the target. The next step would admittedly be a little more difficult, but not impossible.
On the short walk through the theatre’s double doors, you quickly placed the now empty flute of champagne on a nearby table while keeping the target’s moving figure in your peripheral.
The theatre’s winding walkway was dim enough for you to simply press yourself against the wall. As long as you were out of the way of the audience members, you were practically invisible.
Not long after you took your spot in the shadows did the rest of the audience members start flooding in, their excited voices speaking on topics ranging from fundraisers to politics to the opera that they were there to see. While it was mildly entertaining to listen to the oh-so-interesting lives of the rich and privileged, there was only one person in the entire theatre you actually cared about, and it wasn’t in the traditional sense of “care”. More like he would help further you on this personal mission of yours, whether he wanted to or not, and that was why you “cared” about him.
The man walked through the double doors, following the crowd only to veer off in another direction, no doubt on his way to the boxes above the stage reserved for the “special guests”.
You took one step in the direction he went in only to pause. With furrowed eyebrows, you watched as a man roughly 2 times your size stepped through the double doors after the man, eyes scanning the surroundings along with the people who occupied the area. Everything was fine; you had planned for this. But just because you had planned for this did not mean that it made your job easier.
Mere moments later, the lights in the theatre were dimming even more as a voice welcomed the audience. Next came the sounds of the orchestra tuning their instruments as the audience quieted down, and then came the opening notes of the opera.
You were grateful for the carpeted floors of the theatre as you cautiously, but quickly, stepped out of the spot that had been hiding your figure. Without a second thought, not even to rethink your plan B, you quickly walked towards the tall, built man. Under the guise of being solely invested in what was happening on stage, you attempted to step around him, right in the direction the target had walked.
To your expected dismay, your steps were halted when you bumped into a strong chest.
Turning your head resulted in you coming face to face with a man with a stern expression on his face. His eyes focused on your face as you took a step back, plastering a sheepish smile on your face and letting a hushed, breathy laugh escape your lips.
“I’m so sorry, it’s so dark in here-”
“Where’s your ticket?”
His hushed voice cut yours off, leaving no room for any excuse you had prepared to use. His upfront, cold tone made your eyebrows furrow in just the slightest. Maybe...just maybe, this would be harder than you thought.
“O-okay. It’s right here…”
Your hands brought your small clutch to the front of your body before opening it and rifling around in the mostly empty purse. It was simply an act that would play further into this ruse.
Your eyebrows furrowed in concern as you quickened your searching before looking back at the man apologetically.
“I’m so sorry, I seem to have misplaced it. I guess that’s why they encourage e-tickets, huh?” Your sorry attempt at a joke went about as well as you had expected it to in the tough company.
The guard raised an eyebrow at you before looming over you, his eyes boring right into yours.
“No ticket, no entry.”
Despite the hushed whisper of his voice, the roughness of it was apparent. That paired with the cold and unyielding look in his eye made you go to your next plan of action; one that you had really wanted to avoid.
“Fine. Then I’ll just go around and come in the other way.”
Your enunciated your words with a raised eyebrow before turning on your heel and walking out of the double doors that led back to the lobby. You had no intention of leaving until you had received what you had come for in the first place, but the guard didn’t know that...which is what you were counting on.
You heard the door close behind you, and in the second between the door closing and opening again, you managed to step behind the door, obscuring your body from anyone who walked out.
Doing exactly what you had expected him to do, the guard quickly walked out of the doors, his eyes searching quickly around the lobby for your figure. You stayed in your spot behind the door as it slowly closed, and the second it did, your muscles tensed as you sprang into action.
The guard had just turned upon hearing your shoes against the marble floor when you were rushing at him. Acting purely on instinct, your knee raised quickly, connecting with his abdomen. A wheezed breath flew out of his lips as he doubled over, and you took the chance to lock your hands around the back of his neck before throwing your weight backward, taking him with you as you fell to the floor. Instead of his weight landing on you, with a quick shift of your weight and a kick, the guard was sailing through the air above your body before landing with a thud not too far away from you.
It only took a few seconds for you to roll onto your knees and a few seconds more for you to watch and come to the conclusion that the guard was no longer a threat. It was evident in the way his groans echoed through the lobby as he took shaky, painful breaths,
A quick glance around the lobby showed that it was empty before you stood up, reaching down to grab ahold of his ankles. Your labored breaths joined his painful ones as you managed to drag his body behind one of the supporting pillars in the furthest corner near you. You leaned against the same pillar for a second after propping his body up against his, bracing your hands on your knees as you took deep breaths.
“Damn, am I out of shape.”
Your statement echoed lightly through the lobby as you took the time to gather yourself, and at the same time, your eyes followed the wall before you and landed on the blinking red light of a camera. You simply looked at it for a second before straightening yourself and starting the short walk back to the double doors you had just come out of.
The cameras weren’t exactly on your list of things to be concerned about; most likely because you had taken care of them before the elite had started to arrive. It included the simple task of taking one of the theatre’s already published security tapes and putting it on a loop. It was a relatively simple task; almost a little too simple for such a prestigious, well-known theatre. Maybe you’d send a letter advising them to invest in a better surveillance system… later, though. Right now, you still had a few tasks to complete.
The loud, carrying voices of the opera singers paired with the symphony seemed to spill through the doors as soon as you opened them.
The contrast between the bright lights of the lobby and the dimmed lights in the theatre made you pause just inside of the doors to let your eyes adjust, and then you were once again moving in the shadows.
This time, as you gradually made your way to the box hanging over the edge of the stage, there were no obstacles to stop you. It gave you time to think about what you would say to the man that had such a huge impact on your life; an impact that only benefited him and those he worked for and with.
As you grew closer, you could now easily see his distracted face turned towards the stage, giving you the element of surprise as you walked into his box. The curtain closed soundlessly behind you, and then you were facing the man who held a vital piece of information.
“Oh, so you finally decided to join me, Jonathan? I told you, you work too hard sometimes.”
His voice was quiet as he spoke without turning around, undoubtedly under the impression that it was his bodyguard who had just walked in. The sincerity in his voice as he supposedly invited his bodyguard to join him made your teeth clench. It made your blood boil, watching the man who had stripped away the last remaining pieces of yourself those years ago act as if he cared for someone other than himself.
“Jonathan had other matters to attend to. He sent me in his place.”
The man turned quickly upon hearing your voice, his eyes squinting in the low light of the box to make out your features. From where you stood, you could see the confusion on his face.
“Who are you? You’re not permitted to be in here.” He leaned slightly in his seat, his eyes searching the darkness behind you for any sign of his bodyguard. His eyebrows furrowed upon seeing none, and then he met your eyes once again.
It didn’t matter how older he looked; it didn’t matter how many years had changed his face, pulling taut in some areas while being loose in others. The look in his eyes as you stared into them was the same endless, emotionless void you could remember seeing standing over you all those years ago. Eyes that were masked enough to reassure you, but sharp enough to wound you when you trusted them. You had learned that the hard way, and you were still dealing with the fallout.
nil/
Voice low but steady, not a hint of hesitance in it, you asked your own question.
“What? You don’t recognize me? I feel like I should be a little offended, considering how much of your time you spent...experimenting on me.”
His eyes narrowed at your question as he slowly stood, grasping at the back of his chair to ground himself in the dim light. He followed you with his eyes as you continued walking around the chair, approaching his tensed figure.
It only took a quick passing of the stage’s lights over your face for his expression to shift. It was apparent, the way he tried to mask his features into an expression of indifference. But you couldn’t deny the pang of satisfaction that went through your body upon seeing the smallest hint of fear in his eyes. It even made the smallest of smiles lift the corner of your mouth.
“Oh...it’s you. Why are you here? What do you want?”
His questions stopped you in your tracks. His voice was slightly shaky but was it from the shock of your appearance, or was it because he already knew the answers to his own questions? You supposed it was a mixture of both.
“If I told you what I was here for, I’d have to kill you. So just do us both a favor, and just give me what I came for.”
As the word “kill” exited your mouth, a piece of his mask chipped away, revealing just how afraid he was. It made the smile on your face grow.
In a poor effort to put distance between you two, he fumbled with his chair, throwing it to the carpeted floor between you two.
As much as you were enjoying watching his scrambling, as sadistic as it may seem, your mind was quick to go back to the bodyguard you had left unconscious outside of the theatre hall. Everything had been going mostly according to plan and, quite frankly, you didn’t feel like dealing with any other obstacle after getting this close to the target.
“You-you can’t kill me. You won’t.”
He had barely gotten his final word out when you were lunging in his direction, hands outstretched. A strangled yell swallowed by the orchestra’s music flew out of his mouth as his back hit the railing of the box, his feet leaving the floor only seconds after.
His arms flew about, looking for anything to grab and anchor himself...only to be grabbed by your own hand.
In a single motion, you had pulled him over the railing only to let him go as soon as his feet were on the ground once more. You watched as he crumpled, quite pathetically, to the ground before turning away. At the sound of his heavy, shaky breathing, your eyes rolled.
“Is that it? You come here to terrorize me and then you leave? What do you want from me?”
His raised voice prompted you to pause in your spot at the curtain of the box. For a few seconds, the only sounds were his heavy breathing accompanied by the opera’s main character’s words of vengeance, spouted in song on the stage. It’s rather ironic, you thought to yourself.
You simply raised your hand, the ring in it glistening in the stage’s light as it passed by. You turned it around, making sure that he saw exactly who’s ring it was and what it meant; making sure he noticed the empty spot on his finger where it usually sat, and making sure he knew that this was only the beginning of what you had planned for him and his fellow scientists.
His quick intake of breath at realizing what it was didn’t go unnoticed, but you didn’t acknowledge it. Instead, you reached to pull the curtain back, getting ready to finally leave the man behind. Instead, you stopped as his desperate words reached your ears.
“You won’t get what you want. You may have the ring...but you’ll never track us down. We’re everywhere. We are everywhere, and you will regret-”
At some point during his villainous monologue, he had stood up, his eyes focused solely on the back of your head with as much malice as he could muster. His words were cut off after a swift kick to the chair that still lay between the two of you collided with his body, quickly sending him over the edge of the theatre’s box.
The sounds of people’s startled gasps coupled with the sound of the doctor yelling as he fell followed you as you stepped past the curtain of the box, deftly closing it behind you once more.
The emergency exit located not even 15 feet away was the only thing in your sights as you quickly slid the ring into your clutch before pushing the door open.
Your steps echoed in the empty stairwell, and the silence gave you time to think about what had just happened and what had yet to happen in your self-motivated mission.
Despite knowing that this mission would be far from easy, especially by yourself, you couldn’t find an ounce of regret in your entire being. Even knowing that there was a possibility that you wouldn’t survive; after all, the organization your mission was centered around was, in every term of the saying, “off of the grid”. If they didn’t want you to know about them and their work, you wouldn’t know. And if you did happen to know about them, it was next to nothing for them to just...eliminate you. You had seen it before.
What would they do to you, a person who was putting everything into making sure their deeds came to light? You could guess, but you wouldn’t be shocked if they still managed to surprise you with their harsh ways of handling things.
However, they wouldn’t get the chance- you wouldn’t let them.
As soon as you passed through the door that led outside, you could hear the entrance to the stairwell opening, followed by the sounds of multiple pairs of feet rushing down. Their panicked voices confirmed your suspicions that they were just audience members, so your quick stride stayed the same, effortlessly blending in with the crowd that had now made its way to the front of the theatre.
The only people rushing into the building were dressed in police uniforms, accompanied by the theatre’s own guards who were yelling what had happened into their ears.
You figured that it was time to leave when one of the officers walked out of the building, his arm supporting the guard you had...encountered earlier. Your desire to leave the area only increased at the sound of countless camera’s clicking accompanied by the yelling of the reporters stationed outside of the theatre.
Their attentions being focused solely on the crowd exiting the building, and the ambulance that was now hastily pulling up, allowed you to sneak behind them unnoticed,
It was only when you were a block away did you finally slow your steps in the slightest, your hand reaching into the clutch you carried and taking out the one thing this entire night had been focused on.
The thick, yet simply decorated, ring reflected the city’s lights off of it’s surface as you held it up. It was simple in the way that it was designed. A simple band with an emerald gemstone sitting in the middle of it, surrounded by writing. Writing in a language you had never laid eyes on before.
Getting the ring was easy enough, the next part was figuring out how to use it in order to gain the next piece of information you needed. It would be significantly harder; you doubted you had access to the kind of technology needed to translate the text.
One of the downsides of being alone on this mission was not having outside help. You had managed to make it this far with only minimal amounts of contact with those who didn’t exactly know your situation, but with this new piece of information, the next person you went to for help would be sure to ask a few prying questions.
As your “borrowed” car came into view, tucked away into a dark alley, you had to ask yourself a question. A question who’s answer would determine how the rest of this mission would go.
Wouldn’t you rather endure questions from someone you know- someone you trust- than from a complete stranger?
You already knew the answer to the question, though to be honest, it had just added another obstacle to your plans. There was really only one person you trusted enough to tell everything, or at least what they needed to know in order to help you. The obstacle itself was finding her, and the first step to doing that was in China, a place you hadn’t stepped foot in for years.
A heavy, already exhausted sigh left your mouth as you situated yourself inside of the car.
“Well...China it is.”

Once again, I hope you all liked this prologue! I do not plan on having an update schedule for this because I feel as if it would stress me out, which would in turn make it harder for me to write the way I would like to! So updates will sometimes be quick, sometimes they won’t be as quick as you’d like them to be, but all I ask if that you be patient with me! <3
This series will be tracked by the tag “redemption” on my page! :)

🎂🎂🎂🎂🎂🎂🎂🎂🎂
It was your birthday, and while all your friends and family were socializing around the house, you found yourself alone on your balcony. You sipped the remainder of your wine, hoping the alcohol would drown out the voices of everyone asking about work, school, and your dating life. Speaking of the latter, you were more than grateful your boyfriend, Shangqi, was an Avenger. Right when you felt your anxiety peak from the never-ending interrogation, a few of his Avenger friends arrived with boxes of alcohol. As your family and friends began to crowd around the group of Earth’s mightiest heroes, you snatched the bottle of wine from the counter, along with the tortilla chips and guacamole, and disappeared into your room.
Even though it was a chilly night, you figured sitting on your balcony would be a lot nicer than being inside your room and still hearing the commotion downstairs. In that moment, it was just you, your bottle of wine, and your chips and dip. Until it wasn’t.
“I knew I’d find you here,” a voice chirped, causing you to whip your head around to find Shangqi joining you on the balcony. He casually grabbed a chip and scooped a heaping pile of guacamole before shoving it all into his mouth.
“Very classy, babe,” you joked. Shangqi giggled before swallowing the remnants in his mouth. The way he licked the salt off his fingertips and how his Adam’s apple bobbed sent your mind down the gutter, thanks to the wine in your system.
“You okay?” He began, scooting closer to you so he could wrap his strong arm around you. “I know you’re enjoying your peace and quiet, but I still gotta make sure my birthday girl is still having a good birthday.” You smiled and leaned your head on his shoulder.
“I’m better now.” You paused. “Honestly, if the Avengers didn’t come at the right time, I probably would’ve started crying in front of everyone.” Shangqi rubbed your back and shoulder, and kissed the top of your head.
“I’m sorry, little gem. Note to self, don’t let Katy plan any parties.”
You laughed. “Oh, don’t say that. Katy did her best. I probably should’ve mentioned not inviting my entire contact list, but it’s the thought that counts, right?” Shangqi hummed at your comment.
While you both basked in the silence, you studied his face under the night sky, noticing the set of small beauty marks on the side. Even after dating Shangqi for a few months, it was the first time you noticed that about him. It amazed you how beautiful and kind this man was and how in love you were with him. Maybe it was the alcohol talking, but all you could think about was ditching the party and keeping him to yourself for the rest of the night. You didn’t realize you were staring until you heard him call out your pet name.
“What are you thinking about, my precious gem?”
“I never noticed the little beauty marks by your eyes and cheek. You’re cute with them.” Shangqi smiled, his eyes crinkling and dimples forming. He softly pecked your temple and you leaned into his kiss.
“If you don’t stop being so damn adorable, I’m gonna lock you up here so no one can take you from me.”
“Well, I wouldn’t mind that at all.” You wiggled your eyebrows at him.
“Oh, no, I can’t do that to you. Besides, I should go back downstairs. I promised Wong I would take a shot with him after I checked up on you.”
You shook your head and clasped your hand around Shangqi’s thigh before he could try and get up. All of a sudden, the alcoholic buzz hit you like a bus as warmth traveled from your face to your legs. The heat was more apparent in your cheeks and your groin as Shangqi’s cologne filled your nostrils. Your need for him grew as your hand roamed his meaty thigh. Shangqi’s sweet eyes met your darkened ones, the corner of his mouth smugly curving.
“I’m guessing you want me to stay?” You nodded, gaze shifting down to his lips. You leaned towards him and as you were inches from his face, he leaned away from you teasingly. Shangqi smirked, fully knowing how you get frustrated every time he delays your gratification. Your eyebrows furrowed and bottom lip pouted.
“I want you, Shangqi,” you whispered desperately. Your hand traveled up his shirt, feeling his abs through the thin material. He licked his lips, making them shine under the moonlight.
“How about we take this inside? Don’t want the neighbors to see me fucking the shit out of you, right, my little gem?” You bit your lip before racing him inside your room.
Once you were both inside, Shangqi backed you against a wall to crash his lips onto yours. As your lips smashed hungrily against each other, you unbuttoned his white shirt and tossed it to the side. Without removing from the kiss, Shangqi’s hands snaked behind you to unzip your dress, letting it fall to the ground. He moaned faintly upon realizing you didn’t wear a bra under your dress.
“My beautiful gem! Always so gorgeous for me,” Shangqi mumbled against your neck. You gasped as he kissed down to the swells on your chest. His mouth wrapped around your hardened nipple while he massaged your other breast. You threw your head back against the wall, shutting your eyes as he gently sucked on the flesh. Shangqi’s free hand tilted your head down, causing your eyes to open.
“Look at me, gem.” The tip of his tongue flicked against your spit coated bud. You shuddered as a chill went up your spine from his teasing. “I want you to watch me pleasure you.” Shangqi gave your other breast the same treatment with his mouth and tongue. His lips moved down your stomach, making sure your eyes never left his.
Shangqi reached the bottom of your stomach before hooking a single finger under the band of your panties. He pulled the fabric back slightly before connecting it to his teeth. Shangqi slowly yanked them off with his teeth, your arousal sticking to the cotton even as it slid down your legs. You let out a faltered sigh once your wet pussy was displayed right in front of his face.
“Please, baby!” was all you could muster up in the moment, feeling the heat from his eager lips fan over your core. It took all of his willpower to not pounce on you and devour you like a madman. He wanted to save your sweet cunt for after everyone has long gone and it was just the two of you.
“Not right now, gem. I want you on your knees for me.” You were about to question him but he stopped you. “I wanna fuck that pretty face so good, you can’t wait for the party to be over so I can have my way with you.”
You immediately dropped to your knees while Shangqi stood up to undo his pants and push them down to his ankles. He then pulled his boxers down, his hard cock springing out in the process. You moaned as he pumped himself in front of your face. He tucked your hair behind your ear before gripping your jaw.
“Open your mouth.” Shangqi’s command made your pussy throb as you complied. Looking up into his brown eyes, you stuck your tongue out as far as you could. He grinned wickedly before spitting into your mouth, the flat of your tongue collecting his saliva. He slapped his cock against the pink muscle a few times and then abruptly thrusted into your mouth.
Shangqi wasted no time in pushing himself further until his tip poked against your uvula. An animalistic growl ruptured from his throat as you gagged around his length. This caused him to tangle his fingers in your hair as he rutted in and out your mouth.
“Oh fuck, girl,” Shangqi grunted, knitting his eyebrows together. “Such a good girl taking all that cock in your mouth. Is this what you wanted, my sweet gem? To hide away from everyone just for me to find you and shove my dick down your throat?” The dirty talk made you whimper around his girth, triggering him to chuckle darkly. “I know, my little gem. I know it feels so good inside you like this.”
As Shangqi continued fucking your face, you reached down to play with your pulsing clit. Your moans vibrated against his cock as your fingers gently circled against the bundle of nerves. This motivated him to pummel harder into your mouth and you to gargle more around him. With the speed and aggression he was going at, your mouth would be sore the rest of the night.
“Mmm yeah, keep touching yourself like that! You’re so hot when you play with your pussy, fuck! I bet you wanna cum really bad, huh, my gem?” Shangqi took your attempt at nodding your head as a yes. He, now, held the back of your head to push you further down until you reached the base. Tears fell from your eyes as you choked on his dick.
“I’m getting close too, gem. Wanna cum all over those pretty tits of yours. Don’t stop, baby. Doing so good for me. Make yourself cum on those fingers!” You continued rubbing your clit in a frenzy as Shangqi repeatedly bobbed your head up and down his cock. His primal instincts soon took over him as he started whimpering your name with other incoherent pleas.
“Gonna cum now, oh my god- oh my god-” He withdrew his cock from your used mouth and vigorously stroked himself above you. The pressure between your legs finally exploded, causing your eyes to roll back and mouth fly open. As broken cries erupted from your throat, streams of hot liquid spilled onto your chest while Shangqi groaned in pleasure. You both soaked in the afterglow and caught up to your breathing. A few moments later, he grabbed the box of tissues off your nightstand and started cleaning his cum off your body. The way he cleaned around your breasts and pussy got you hot and bothered again.
“Shangqi, can you fuck me, please?” You begged, running your finger along his bicep. Shangqi snickered, shaking his head. He handed you your dress and panties from the ground.
“You, birthday girl, have a party to get back to. We don’t want them to become suspicious now, do we?” Once he started dressing himself, you sighed in defeat, putting your own clothes back on. You both checked yourselves in the mirror right by the door, Shangqi’s gaze lingering a little longer on your curves. “Let’s go back out, drink a little, have some cake, and then, you and I can have the real dessert after everyone leaves. How does that sound?” He winked at you before bringing your small hand to his lips. You bit your lip, following him out of your room.
Good thing Shangqi was a man of his word because after the party was over, he gave the dessert you were craving.
