Bear with me, but I'm thinking about "All that walking just to get above my own rooftop!" and how, despite Sophie setting out to seek her fortune, she ends up living in a magic twisted version of her childhood home.

It's like... She may be right back where she started, but it's all mixed up with the castle now and "She could see the window of her own old bedroom, up above the shop. That made her feel odd too, because there did not seem to be any way to get up into it now." She isn't the Sophie who left and the castle reflects this. It melds her past and her present, altering not only Sophie's past but also her new found home in the castle. It's a metaphor for character growth, of a childhood abandoned and then returned to. Everything has changed, but also the same!

No wonder she had fearsome mixed feelings about it all. It must be frightful to have the castle you're living in get twisted with your past, the one that had almost become a cage to you.
