We writers are often odd souls. Some things normal people might ignore, mean a big deal to us. Case in point, yesterday I had the chance to talk to a group of teen readers about my second book, Across a Broken Shore. I’ve done these kind of book club events before, but this one was different. Every single girl in the room was completely engaged in the conversation. They knew the smallest details about AABS, caught small nuggets of mystery about certain characters, and understood the symbols and themes I weaved throughout the book. We even did a jeopardy-style game with questions about my own book, and they kicked my tail! The one thing that completely blew me away was this first picture. It seems small, but I’ve always wanted a reader to fall so in love with my book that they flag the pages. When I saw this, I almost lost it! Many thanks to Jennifer, the Prescott Teen Services librarian who put this event together, and to the smart, young women in the group. Q: Have you ever read any of the original Grimm's fairytales? . I have read one or two and they're definitely more gruesome in their original forms. More blood. Fewer happy endings. Doesn't mean they're less fascinating though. There's definitely a lot of 'Good triumphs, evil suffers' in these. I think it lends a sense of realism to the stories, despite the witches and fairies and mermaids...Even with all that magic, actions have consequences, they may not always be fair, but they're there. Eventually, I plan to start making my way through this book. It's a bit daunting, but who knows what inspiration with strike me. The last of some Black Fiction, and a lot of YA. Notably THE badass #BenildeLittle. Acting Out is always good with a glass of wine. 😌 and I plan to own every book #PearlCleage has ever written. I’m getting there lol. Important, if random: I’ll be starting a Caribbean fiction section when I get settled. Not pictured is one of my FAVE YA BOOKS EVER, Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo. @thisbrownegirlreads, has opened my eyes to new textures in Blackness that I knew about but didn’t perceive well. Watching the group devour Caribbean fiction there are so many authors I have swallowed into the umbrella of “Black Fiction”. In this stack, there is #MaikaMouliteAndMaritzaMoultie, Haitian Americans. The rest of these are ode to my childhood mostly. I like to re/read them and practice writing digestibly. Mildred Taylor and Walter Sean Myers were some of the first people I tried to write like growing up. Also took hella heat from my entire family for reading all of the Laura Ingalls Wilder books. Idk WHY I loved them. 😬😳🤷🏾‍♀️🤣🤣🤣 Turns out, I just like the country. Lol. Judy Blume, Beverly Clearly were also loved. But THE GIVER. By Lois Lowry.
