YA Book Review: Livia Aemilia Mystery Series
Fellow Redemption Press author, Lisa Betz, is a riot. We met at the February 2022 Christian Product Expo in Concord, N.C., and I enjoyed her company so much that I volunteered to work a second shift at our publisher’s booth so I could spend another hour with her. She’s a terrific storyteller, in person and on the page. I may or may not have done a little fan-girling as she handed me a free…

I am finally back on track after a very long reading slump. When I started this book I knew it would not be the best choice to get rid of my slump but at the same time, I really wanted to read it. This would be my first self-growth book review and I am very excited to share it. Dale is truly an amazing writer and lecturer. His lessons are the type of lessons that will never get too old and that is why the book keeps selling and leaders continue to learn from it. ✨ I annotated a lot in this book as you can see in the photos as well. Some of his best quotes and references are: 🔴 ‘A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still.’ 🔴 ’When two partners always agree, one of them is not necessarily.’ 🔴 ‘You can measure the size of a person by what makes him or her angry.’ Have you read this book? What are your thoughts about it? I’d love to hear more opinions. 😌 Link for my full review in bio ❤️ #cloudwrites . . . . . . . . #bookreview #bookreviews #bookreviewer #igbookreview #bookreviewers #bookreviewblog #bookreviewersofinstagram #minibookreview #picturebookreview #bookreviewblogger #audiobookreview #instabookreview #bookreviewing #bookreviewerswanted #yabookreview #newyorktimesbookreview #bookreviewsofinstagram #ebookreview #nytimesbookreview #30secondbookreview #bookreviewswanted #newbookreview #coffeeandbooks #bookstagrammer #books #bookstagram #booklover #bookloversalways #bookcommunity (at Bookstagram) https://www.instagram.com/p/CoP2Jvmrhcp/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

“Again, Again”- Book Review
Tumblr media
Have you ever wondered if things have gone differently if you did something? If you said a particular joke or waved or walked instead of taking the bus, could your life changed completely? I, at least, ask myself this question a lot.
“Again, Again” by E. Lockhart addresses this question perfectly in a bittersweet, but hopeful tone. The main character, Adelaide, is a girl who seems so ebullient on the outside, but is sad on the inside. She just broke up with her boyfriend, and is devastated. She is also worried about her little brother, Toby, who is in rehab. She then meets Jack, a dreamy boy she met 2 years ago at a party in Boston. From here, we see multiple ways her life plays out. Just from one action, such as deciding to say “Hi” changes her life completely.
This story is such a complex story. There are so many parallel worlds, and we see Adelaide’s character changing depending on the alternate universe. I also love how complex Adelaide was--this definitely added to the story. I would say this book was a bit confusing—I found myself rereading some pages because the story switched back and forth from so many parallel universes. But, I think the ending of this book was beautiful and hopeful, and definitely makes you think. Plus, the cover is really pretty! I recommend this book!

**BOOK REVIEW** Good Girls Die First by @iloveweirdbooks ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4 / 5 Thank you so much to @scholastic_uk for sending a copy! Good Girls Die First will be published in July 2020. • 10 teenagers lured to an abandoned carnival each with a secret to hide. They all start dying one by one, who will survive? I would describe this book as a supernatural twist on And Then There Were None. I loved the premise and really enjoyed the supernatural/horror elements that I didn't expect from the blurb. Kathryn Foxfield really builds suspense, creates a very effective unsettling atmosphere and really disorients the reader by playing around with the passage of time. I really liked the characters. I enjoyed all of their very varied personalities and the chemistry/dynamics between the group. Even the characters that didn't last very long shone. Jolie was a stand out favourite for me, as well as Noah. However I did find the secrets very predictable for each character. All of the clues were right there but this may not be as clear to other readers (I'm a crime/thriller fiend so I could be being extra Miss Marple here). There are some difficult subjects touched on throughout this novel (TW): suicide, eating disorders, sexual assault, death/bereavement. However I felt some of them were used as shock factors for the 'secrets' and were not necessarily addressed as well as they could have been, especially as it was clear the characters were damaged by these experiences. In general these themes did provide a strong message of battling inner demons, and these are all important issues to cover. Overall I thought this was a brilliant, entertaining, dark little novel. I would highly recommend it for getting out of a reading slump as I devoured it in 24 hours. • Pre-order now! • #bookreview #bookblogger #bookblog #bookstagramreviews #scholastic #scholasticya #bookreviewer #goodgirlsdiefirst #yalit #yafiction #ireadya #yathriller #youngadultbooks #yabookstagrammer #yabookreview #bookrecs #bookrecommendations (at London, United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_489vSAtD9/?igshid=qfex66nt2rzs

Spoiler Free Review of
The Girl the Sea Gave Back by Adrienne Young
Companion book to Sky in the Deep by Adrienne Young
Straight into this story we are introduced to the Kyrr people, and one of our dual perspectives Tova. The Kyrr people lead their lives based on their beliefs in the fates and their ability to throw and read the ruin stones. Tova has a fate that brings her people and family much pain, yet their faith in the Fates leads on. Our other POV is Halvard, who was also a character in Sky in the Deep. Halvard is part of the Nadhir people, a combination of the Aska and Riki clans from years before. He is the first generation to really live after a blood feud that lasted decades and he’s inline to be the next chieftain of his people.
What Halvard and the Nadhir people don’t realize is that another people, the Svell people, are watching and preparing for war. When news of a devastating blow to the Nadhir people comes to light, Tova and Halvard are thrust into the path the Fates have in store for them no matter the outcome. Tova is trying to make the best of a bad situation, stuck with people that are ready to kill her at every turn, she throws the ruin stones and heads down the path to where Halvard and her collide.
I struggled a tiny bit at the beginning of this book with the onslaught of information. Between names, places and the people, you can get a little lost in trying to get it all straight. However I really liked the Viking vibes and the simple life that Adrienne has in both of her books. Like in Sky in the Deep, Adrienne also has no problem getting the ladies out on the battlefield and not just in front of the fire. The Girl The Sea Gave Back is full of life lessons about fearing the unknown, betrayal, family and how horrible war can be. You’ll be crying, angry and fighting side by side on the battlefield with two great characters who are just trying to do the best they can.
I give this book 4 stars ⭐️

Book: More Happy Than Not
Author: Adam Silvera
Rating: 4/5
Summary: Life hasn’t been easy for Aaron but with his girlfriend Genevieve by his side, he’s slowly starting to discover happiness again. But then he meets Thomas and his life only gets more complicated. In a world where you can have your memories erased by Leteo, wouldn’t it be easier to simply forget all his struggles?
This book was beautiful and heartbreaking. It dealt with such a wide range of important and heavy issues in very gentle empathetic way. I do have to say that the blurb of this book does miss out a very important part of its concept (the Leteo project) but at least this gave way to more surprises in the plot, which is the great thing about this book - it’s full of clever gut-wrenching twists and leaves you thinking ‘wow.’ All the characters were not only three dimensional and complex but all added a new perspective or plot to the story. Moreover? structure of this book was excellent and it left me with MANY thoughts and feelings.
Although I loved this book you may have noticed that it only has four stars. I think part of the reason for this may have been due to my incredibly high standards; all of Adam other books have left me weeping for long after, wanting the best for my newly adopted fictional children. The problem is, I wasn’t a big fan of any of the characters (bar Genevieve). I don’t want to say the main character was a dick because he went through so much, but there was probably nicer ways he could’ve done what he did. So, although I pitied him and felt sorry for him, his story didn’t leave me in inconsolable tears because I was also angry at him. Of course I will applaud Silvera’s creation of such a complicated character but they just weren’t to my taste.
Overall, I would definitely recommend this book. Although it was missing Silvera’s magic touch that seems to have developed over time, the idea was genius. It expertly explores homophobia, the power of our memories, depression, and what it means to be happy, in a very clever and emotional way - so even if you have no connection to these topics I would definitely pick it up.

The Brilliant Death by Amy Rose Capetta
Tumblr media
I received an ARC of this book from Novelist in return for an honest review.
This book was so good it put me in a week long book-hangover. I’m really hoping Capetta writes a follow-up because I need more Teo and Cielo goodness!
The Brilliant Death follows Teodora di Sangro, or Teo for short, as she makes her way to the Capitol to meet with the Capo. The Capo is trying to unify Vinalia, but he needs the help of the heirs to the five families, and the best way to do that is to keep their first born sons under his thumb. To that end, he has poisoned the heads of the five families, including Teo’s father, and has demanded that the heirs attend him at his castle.
Teo, who is a strega (unbeknownst to her family and the rest of her townspeople) and has been quietly using her powers to get rid of her family’s enemies for years, decides to answer the Capo’s call. On the way to the city, she meets Cielo, another strega who can shift genders as easily as breathing, and shows Teo just how powerful she might become if she learns to harness her magic.
As Teo’s powers, and her attraction to Cielo, grow the strega starts to wonder if she can ever go back to living life in the shadows. That is, if the Capo decides to let her live at all.
Part of what I really loved about this book was Capetta’s use of language; “wordsmith” is definitely a term I’d use here. Like with this line from early on in Teo’s journey to the Capitol - “At some hazy point, after so much walking that my feet became the high note in an aria of discomfort, one spot in the sky turned raw pink.”
Also, I totally loved the relationship between Teo and Cielo and all its genderfluid glory. “It’s true that I contain more than one thing,” Cielo said. “And sometimes the balance shifts.”
Also, also, the way Capetta explores feminism and being a woman in a patriarchy-fueled society is spot on, but I don’t want to say any more here for fear of spoiling some plot-points.
All-in-all, I found this truly a wonderful read.

What I Like About Me by Jenna Guillaume
This book had me gripped from the start. It was witty and funny and resonated with the voice of a 16-year-old in today’s society. What I Like About Me explored many themes, ranging from self-confidence, family dynamics, and societal norms to friendship, acceptance and courage. I found this novel to carry significant power, advocating and delving into many messages that deserve to be talked about. Right from the beginning, I have found a connection with Maisie, the narrator, on an emotional level. She was going through the stuff I’ve gone though, and seeing her positive outlook on the issues that many teenagers face has given me strength to do the same.
I loved the unique format that the novel was set in. The idea of a ‘discovery journal’ has shown how Maisie has grown over the summer, how her perspectives have changed, and her priorities as well. The light notes of a summer romance have given me a breath of fresh air. Sure, I love romance, but it’s nice to have have something else in the mix. I’ve found What I Like About Me to be a fun mix of key messages, romance, and a cosy setting I’d love to visit.
One thing I’ve taken out of this novel is that it’s okay not to be perfect. It’s okay not to have your career or uni goals sorted. It’s okay to have turbulent friendships. It’s okay to not fit the moulds and stereotypes of society. It’s okay to be different, weird, crazy, as long as you are happy and okay with that.
This was a wonderful read. I would recommend it to anybody, whether they’re twelve or twenty. The themes explored in What I Like About Me are relevant and need to be talked about, to ensure the world is a prejudice-free, safe, happy place for every person.

MG & YA Book Review: Hana's Suitcase by Karen Levine
While on vacation in the Czech Republic, I learned about a MG and YA WWII book called "Hana's Suitcase." When I returned home, I downloaded and read it in one sitting. It's an amazing story. Check out my book review.
During our recent vacation, my husband and I visited the town of Terezin, the former WWII Theresienstadt Ghetto, located 30 miles north of Prague, Czech Republic. It served as a waystation from 1941-1945 for more than 88,000 Czech, German, and Danish Jews on their way to extermination camps. Another 33,000 Jews died within its fortress-like walls from malnutrition and disease. Now a Holocaust…

Happy Tuesday that feels like a Monday and Happy Publication Day to two amazing YA reads! (Both reviewed on my #bookblog today - link in bio) . Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim is a #yafantasy #retelling that made me never want to leave the world in the book. It’s absolutely exquisite and the story threw me a curveball that I could never have expected. ☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️ . And if #yacontemporary is your thing, Where It All Lands by Jennie Wexler should be your next read. I am in awe of the way this tale is told even more than I am the actual story. Spoiler alert: They Both Die At The End. (by Adam Silvera) This book proves that life is really about the journey, not the destination. It brings up some heavy topics and philosophical questions without actually feeling heavy or philosophical, which makes it a great read for teens. After all, we all die at the end, yet the moments leading up to the end are what truly matter, and it's up to us to make the most of it.
