A luau-themed party aboard the Grille, a yacht used by Adolf Hitler and the Nazis, July 15, 1949. The 3,600 ton Grille (which is German for "whim" or "caprice") had been used during the war as a control craft for German submarine attacks. It was from this ship that Hitler’s death was announced on May 1, 1945.
The Grille was bought by an Englishman who came to the U.S. looking to sell it. He charged a small fee to the public for a look inside and donated the proceeds to charity. The yacht ended up being reduced to scrap in 1951.
