I just finished Cemetery Boys and I am SCREECHING

imma put my thoughts under a cut tho for spoilers

Yadriel is just *chefs kiss* and Julian? Also *chefs kiss*

I would gladly marry Maritza and ugh just the LGBTQ rep in this? Like it is centered around two gay guys one of whom is trans and ik that the author is trans masc and it really shows why own voices books are so amazing

All of the times that Yads was misgendered, on purpose or by accident, were written brilliantly. The way people try to put the onus on you to forgive THEM for their mistakes? It was amazing because yeah, why can’t I be mad? Why do I have to be patient and correct people a million times only for them to keep getting it wrong?

Also, Yads being trans without starting hormones or having surgery was amazing as well. Because he does pass in certain situations but mostly people assume a lot and I think it’s so important to have trans rep that haven’t started medical transition. All of the (very little) trans rep I’ve ever come across, they’re all post-op, completely passing, etc. and while that’s great, not everybody has the chance to medically transition and not everybody wants to

And just the Latinx culture depicted in it? It was amazing because a lot of the time, when you see POC in media they don’t get to show their culture, and they very rarely are entrenched in it the way Yadriel was. Being a brujo was so important to him, and rightfully so, and it was just... amazing

Anyways, I absolutely adored Cemetery Boys and I will be reading Lost In The Never Woods as soon as I can get my hands on it

I bet one of the first sentences Aiden Thomas came up with (along with the iconic Spanish graffiti by Julian) when writing Cemetery Boys was

The aquelarre celebrates transition.

as it’s so ironic, coming from Yadriel’s dad who doesn’t even let his own son participate the aquelarre at the beginning not recognizing him as a brujo - and since the word is italicized in the book I’d be surprised if this wasn’t intended to be a self-reflective pun by Enrique lol
