#TBT to that time I saw my characters move from the page to real illustrated images. You can tell an artist what you imagine, but it’s breathtaking when they get everything absolutely right. One of the things they don’t tell you as a newbie author is that books (unless they are perennial bestsellers) have a very short shelf life. Every week new books come out and there is only so much real estate bookstores have to display titles. As a result, some books may only be in stores for a month or two. For something that you’ve worked on for years, put your heart and soul into, that is a bitter pill to swallow. This is why still doing events after two/three years of having my books released is such a thrill for me. Knowing and understanding that shelf life, but having a big chain still spend their limited dollars on my titles, is a very cool thing. I hope and pray that readers will continue to find my books and support my brave girls. As writers we too often think about the next hurdle. What book we are going to write next. If we’ve done enough promo or spent enough time shouting from the rooftops about what’s coming next. We writers are often odd souls. Some things normal people might ignore, mean a big deal to us. Case in point, yesterday I had the chance to talk to a group of teen readers about my second book, Across a Broken Shore. I’ve done these kind of book club events before, but this one was different. Every single girl in the room was completely engaged in the conversation. They knew the smallest details about AABS, caught small nuggets of mystery about certain characters, and understood the symbols and themes I weaved throughout the book. We even did a jeopardy-style game with questions about my own book, and they kicked my tail! The one thing that completely blew me away was this first picture. It seems small, but I’ve always wanted a reader to fall so in love with my book that they flag the pages. When I saw this, I almost lost it! Many thanks to Jennifer, the Prescott Teen Services librarian who put this event together, and to the smart, young women in the group. I love this IG account. It is full of brave and bold words about owning your own life and not letting people get in the way of your dreams. It is basically the sentiment of both my books. . Meet Lillian Boyer. She is just one of the many women who were the inspiration for Grace in Nothing But Sky. Like many women of her time (early 1920s), Lillian was seen as a novelty. Her feats of daring, swinging 500 feet above ground while dangling from the wing of a plane, were not deemed to be worth more than a few lines of ink on the page at the time. But Lillian was astounding in every right. She was the first woman to successfully jump from a speeding car onto a ladder hanging precariously from a low-flying plane. She was also the first woman to hang below the wing of plane by only a small wire clenched between her teeth. Like her other daredevil pals Ethel Dare and Mabel Cody, she would dance through the sky on the wing of a plane with only gravity and the force of the wind keeping her aloft. She almost never wore a parachute, saying they restricted her performances. During Women’s History Month we seem to always give kudos to the same names and faces (which are of course worth recognition), but brave and determined women like Lillian deserve notice as well. She tested the skies at every moment and still lived a long and fruitful life. On this Veteran’s Day, I want to say thank you to both active and retired service men and women. We may not say this enough, but a very grateful nation thanks you for keeping us safe at home. . One of the biggest challenges for me in writing NOTHING BUT SKY was honoring and respecting those who served. I spent hours researching WWI. The battles. The living conditions. The shell shock that followed (that was the earliest name given to PTSD). When I wrote Henry’s story, I wanted to get every detail right and correctly capture the pain and fear he felt after the war. I wrote him with careful care and respect that I hope everyone will give to veterans who are struggling. .
