I was kinda disappointed when gimmighoul didn't evolve into some kind of spooky mimic, so I decided to steal its treasure chest and make my own!

Evolve by trading a paldean yamask with a chest form gimmighoul. Trainer who receives gimmighoul will receive roaming form instead, and paldean yamask will Evolve into gimmigrigus.

Flavor text 1: A yamask successful in stealing a gimmighoul's treasure becomes a gimmigrigus. This Greedy pokemon waits in ruins for Greedy travelers, occasionally wheeling to new areas using the gold coins it possesses.

Flavor text 2: It uses its dazzling hoard to lure potential victims, humans and pokemon alike. Once close, the victims become enthralled by the treasure, staying put until gimmigrigus absorbs their life energy.

I remember seeing gimmighoul for the first time and hoping it would Evolve into some kind of mimic. When I was disappointed by the Golden string cheese man, I decided to make my own mimic fakemon, but halfway through, I thought it'd be a great idea to make a regional yamask and mimic evolution! I think it came out really well.

so i wanted to try my hand at making fakemon! decided i'd start simple, a regional variant (sort of) so there was an existing pokemon to base it on and i wouldn't have to go from scratch.

ghost pokemon often have dark backstories so i wondered, what if i undid that, what if i changed a pokemon so it was no longer sad or scary? ghosts usually have a reason for coming back to life too, spite or unfinished business, so what about a ghost that moved on from its tragic past and found a happier life?

detailled explanations for these two under the cut!

first off, the stats are the same as yamask and cofagrigus with the def and spdef swapped, like how galarian yamask and runerigus also have the same stats with atk and spatk swapped.

masquerade yamask can only be found behind the theatre in nimbasa city, like other regional variants you can't just form change a normal yamask into one. it evolves into theatrigus after performing in the musical with high friendship. in hoenn and sinnoh this would be a contest instead, and filming a video with it in kalos. no idea what you'd do in the other regions honestly. no theatrigus for you galarians.

the idea is that yamask that liked the theatre were able to move on from their past life by finding a new passion. it keeps its old mask, but it doesnt cry when it looks at it anymore. its just a reminder of a fond memory from a different time, but yamask is just as happy in the present now and no longer has a reason to lament its past life.

theatrigus was tough to design at first. originally i kept trying to make its face look a lot more like cofagrigus, but it looked too scary, not what you'd expect from a playful actor. cofagrigus's dex says it forgot its memories of being human, and runerigus is straight up cursed probably, but theatrigus isn't cursed or spiteful after losing its memories (i assume it doesnt lose them at all). so i figured it was good enough reasoning for theatrigus to look friendlier and cuter because there was no negative force that turned it monstrous. it still looks odd enough for a ghost/fairy type

theatrigus is just "theatre+egregious" like cofagrigus and runerigus, but after googling egregious's definition i found it used to mean "distinguished" instead of "bad". so the name scheme still fits!

bulbapedia says yamask is based on "ba", a part of the egyptian concept of the soul; what makes a person unique, similar to a personality. the ba is depicted as a bird with a human head. theatrigus is the opposite, it looks like a bird usually (yamask looked like one too so i leaned into that), but it can shapeshift to copy the lower body of a person.

it's fairy type because of its shapeshifting, since thats a common thing for fairies to do in fairy tales and myths. shapeshifting is how i decided to incorporate an actor changing roles or costume. the fluffy mist is supposed to look like fairy dust, a feather boa you might associate with old timey famous people, and the way that in cartoons or games a character might suddenly change appearance in a puff of smoke.

also for anyone interested in AU ramblings, please enjoy the literal essay i wrote under the cut lol

THE PREMISE:

AU where pokemon exist in the DP canon. Universes are merged, so Amity Park exists alongside Kanto/Unova/etc in their respective real world locations.

Danny’s parents research/hunt dp-verse ghosts AND ghost pokemon. Their research is focused on the ghosts of once-living creatures, and also identifying the difference between “dead” and “living” ghosts. ex. A Yamask can be born from an egg, which means it never died, but it can also be the spirit of a dead person.

While the Fentons aren’t actively trying to exterminate every ghastly or duskull, they still have some serious prejudices against ghost types, and they DEFINITELY hate dp-verse ghosts as much as in canon.

The portal accident happens normally. Danny was due to get his first pokemon around the start of freshman year, but the accident (and his now spiraling school grades) put it on hold.

Instead, Phantom is exploring the ghost zone one day and passes by a Hisuian Zorua. Danny doesn’t think much of it, but the Zorua follows him home and quickly causes trouble. It seems to have a nasty grudge against humans, playing dangerous pranks against Amity Park’s residents and forcing Danny to send it back into the zone. After several return trips, it settles down and decides that it’s more interested in this not-entirely-living-or-dead kid than getting revenge. After that decision, Zorua quickly becomes Danny’s partner.

Since Zorua are inherently timid creatures and a Hisuian variant would attract a lot of attention (not to mention Jack and Maddie’s possible reaction), Zorua is almost always disguised as something other than its true form. Seeing a Unovan Zorua on Danny’s shoulder is common, as are Rowlet and Hoothoot. No one’s really sure where Danny caught them all, but they don’t care enough to ask.

Phantom, on the other hand, can be seen at night playing with a ghostly variant of Zorua previously thought to be extinct.

PKMN TEAMS:

danny:

hisuian zorua (discussed above)

absol (stalks him for a year because Danny is a Walking Disaster and triggers all of absol’s danger senses. maybe it tried to prevent the portal accident and failed?)

jazz:

eevee (lots of potential, connections to mutations/~molecules getting all rearranged~)

parents were pushing for eevee to evolve into umbreon, but………

sam:

bulbasaur (grass type, connection to “save the frogs” episode)

shiny purrloin (technically the family pet, but is fond of sam)

tucker:

helioptile (generates electricity, connections to desert and ”hotep ra” episode)

rotom (initially a pest who possesses his tech, later forms a rotom phone relationship)

maddie:

weavile (intelligent, vicious hunter. has hands to help out in the lab)

houndoom (hunter, pack animal, loyal)

jack:

slaking (lazy and unassuming but very powerful. has hands to help out in the lab)

porygon2 maybe? (gift from vlad with the intention of hacking their systems)

^^^ weavile and slaking are maddie and jack’s starters. houndoom and porygon2 are bonded to the whole fenton family rather than one particular person.

vlad:

crobat (vampiric, requires friendship- aka vlad isn’t completely evil)

skitty (nicknamed maddie)

noivern (vampiric, violent and cruel but can be tamed. maybe it bonds to Danny and defects?)

hydreigon (destructive and overwhelmingly powerful)

shiny charizard

also probably like a dozen dreepy/dragapult

^^^ most of vlad’s pokemon are just displays of wealth and power. he hasn’t seriously bonded with any of them except for crobat, his starter, and skitty, his “sister’s cat”.

also a note that im not necessarily choosing pkmn that perfectly match a character’s theme or aesthetics, but instead ones that are realistic for them to have in this universe!

WORLDBUILDING NOTES:

Starter pokemon are gifted by the child’s parents. Traditional starters like charmander/bulbasaur/squirtle are only available to those sponsored by a prominent pkmn lab and/or rich parents.

Having a full team is rare unless you’re a full time trainer… it’s just too expensive to house and feed them. On a similar note, shinies are basically unheard of unless you’re stupidly rich.

Pokemon journeys are still considered a rite of passage, but aren’t a universal experience. Not everyone participates, and those who do usually only get 1-2 badges before quitting. The average age for new trainers is around 13-16, though legally you can start at 10.

Amity Park is a ghostly hot spot just like Kanto’s lavender town. There are a few gravesites, but not nearly enough to justify the amount of activity it receives.

The ghost zone primarily contains “dead” ghosts, but “living” ghost pkmn are attuned to the zone and use natural portals to traverse the world.

The Fenton family’s pokemon are all either dark or normal type, for type effectiveness and immunity against ghosts respectively. Any pokemon they give to their children will follow the same type theme in the hopes that they will join the ghost hunting business.

Danny:

was very excited to start his pkmn journey, but with his new ghost instincts demanding he protect Amity Park, he can’t see it happening anymore. Also, while Zorua gradually grows more confident and helps Danny with ghost fights, it still hates having human attention drawn to it and wouldn’t enjoy the publicity of gym battling.

is friends with loads of ghost pkmn, but he never officially catches any besides zorua. They’re residents of his haunt, not his teammates.

if the accident didn’t happen, his starter would either be hoothoot (because of spooky from the initial show concept) or a common dog like poochyena or lillipup… the Fentons spent all their money getting jazz a fancy eevee so Danny’s starter wouldn’t be nearly as impressive :’) rowlet would only be a possibility if gifted from Vlad, though Danny’s parents wouldn’t approve as it evolves into a ghost type.

Sam:

is very anti-battling at first. She felt that battling was abusive and was probably very loud and in your face about it lol. However, Bulbasaur loves to battle and wants to use it as a way to get stronger and evolve, so after a messy disagreement, Sam begins to see it in a healthier light. She still advocates for better pkmn rights, but is careful not to speak over those she’s defending.

would probably join team Aqua, Magma, or Plasma for at least half a day before realizing theyre evil lolol. (then she’d work with Danny and Tucker to defeat them on the exact same day)

Bulbasaur has a lengthy pedigree and comes from a line of contest winners. Neither it nor Sam have any interest in continuing that tradition though.

is the most likely person in the DP cast to become the champion.

Tucker:

is neutral on gym battling. He thinks the concept is cool and likes watching the championships on TV, but is way too much work to actually participate in. His pokemon feel the same and are happy just helping with his electronics.

is obsessed with Silph Co technology rather than new PDAs. He’s always buying their newest gadgets, even if he doesn’t have a proper use for them.

babies the hell out of his pokemon. helioptile is his little angel who can do no wrong and he’s always shielding it from dangerous situations (which becomes a bit of an issue as ghost fights increase in frequency.) With rotom, hes always double checking that its comfortable in his phone, if it wants to possess anything else, if he should upgrade its appliances, etc etc.

Jazz:

never went on a pokemon journey. She thought it was a waste of time since she didn’t want to become a trainer anyway. However, ghost hunting helps Jazz discover her own love of battling, so now she kinda regrets it.

eevee eventually evolves into sylveon. Its prehensile ribbons help Jazz multitask and its empathetic nature assists Jazz with psychology. Also it can scare away Vlad’s dragons lolol. Maybe it evolves in the middle of a fight against him?

if she gets any other teammates, it should reflect her desire to keep Danny safe. Maybe a honedge? usually Danny’s the one with a sword in fanon, but i think jazz deserves one too!!!

Idea for a "Yamask/Cofagrigus Ingo" idea: Ingo's Paradoxical nature results in him coming back not as a normal Yamask, but as a Paradox Pokémon. Specifically, he becomes Iron Perigee, a Ghost/Psychic Paradox variant of Cofagrigus/Runerigus with an Ability (Spatial Vacuum) that serves as Volt Absorb/Water Absorb for Dark-type moves.

(Ingo looks like a Cofagrigus/Runerigus version of Old Sci-Fi Rocketships-except in all black, with stripes up the side reminiscent of the stripes on his coat, and that light up Pearl Clan pink whenever he opens up.)

Iron Perigee, or Raygurigus as it's known by the people of Snowpoint City, is a strange Pokémon: very little is known about it beyond references to it in the writings of the Pearl Clan and blurry photographs. However, what little sources on it say that it stands guard over the resting grounds of the Pearl Clan, dispatching all intruders with blasts of Psychic power and bursts of gravitational energy. Some of the people in Snowpoint say that it is the soul of the Last Warden, transformed into a Pokémon of steel and ectoplasm to better protect his clan mates. Others claim that it is the soul of one lost in time, transformed into a being of the future it came from, and stands watch over the Pearl Clan as gratitude for taking it in so long ago. Very few know the truth-that it is both of these things at once, and that even now, it seeks the memories of a time before Hisui-memories it lost long ago, before it arrived in these cold lands.

Are ya ready, kids? Because I've saved the best for last!

Pokemon's Ghost type is perhaps my favorite unified group of fictional characters. I love the spooky vibes they carry with them, I love the design choices all around, I love the various takes on the theme of death hidden behind the facade of a babby little Nintendo game for kids. Let's go down the list, shall we?

We've got:

The tricksy little miscreants that are simply Up To No Good (Hoopa, Misdreavus)

The genuinely malicious ones that Actually Want You Dead (Spiritomb, Palossand)

The ones that only want love from humans (Mimikyu, Banette)

The ones that used to be humans (Phantump, Yamask)

The pretty ones that'll slowly lure you to your own demise (Frillish, Chandelure, Frosslass, Sensu Oricorio)

The regional variants that are essentially darker recolors slapped with sick-looking fire (Marowak, Typhlosion)

The ones that are literally just inanimate objects with souls (Sinistea, Honedge, Golett, Dhelmise)

The embodiments of some of those themes of death that I mentioned before, from the resentment that lingers in one's very soul (Hisuian Zoroark) to the extinction of a species (Galarian Corsola) to a warrior who literally wears a reminder of its fallen comrades (Basculegion)

The ones that are corruptions of other Pokemon's designs (Gengar, Mimikyu again, all of the regional variants)

pebble the golett. hes a little bundle of energy and loves fighting. his energy makes him a bit tough to take care of but.. i cant stay mad at him

oran the frillish. used to be pretty anxious n shit but now that we've settled down hes a bit calmer. think he just doesnt like big cities and crowds. same honestly

connie the cosmog. (yes an actual fucking cosmog.) dont ask how i got her. long story.. shes just a puff of stardust and love.

perjury the shiny misdreavus.. mischievous bastard. love her though. not the best influence on pebble and connie but she makes them happy

klinklang the. klinklang. obviously. ended up taking care of her after her previous owner abandoned her. shes a bit hard to read...

plus i got a shiny cutifly delivered to me? shes pretty chill.. helps out with gardening

One More to Join the Party

The journey from Castelia City to Nimbasa City was best taken by foot - at least, that's what all the books said. 

Anya was agreeing, at least so far. 

It gave her various home goods time to get to her apartment before she did, and - perhaps more importantly - gave her time to get all of her negative energy out of her through traveling alone before arriving in Nimbasa for the final interview for her new position. She could already feel it working, which was great.

After how she left Galar, she needed it. 

“Yamah! Yah!” Drew floated ahead on the path

“See somethin? I think the map says ruins - maybe time f’r a break?” 

Drew nodded. 

The Relic Castle - a once grand place, surely, now peaceful ruins with curious tourists and traveling trainers. 

Due to the lolling clouds threatening rain, there wasn’t a whisper of a soul there. 

“Huh… quiet” 

“Yamah?” 

“Nah, i’s fine” Anya sat herself on a metal bench “We can jus’ look. I need t’eat somethin’” 

Drew nodded, floating about nearby to investigate - he quite liked ruins, really - odd little pokemon, he was. 

“Mah?” 

Drew suddenly perked up, looking towards the castle ruins

“Yah! Mah! YAmah??!?!”

“Do you hear that, Drew?” Anya was getting up from her bench, looking concerned “it sounds scared” 

“Yah-” 

“YAhhh!!!”

“Which way, Drew??” 

“Yamah!” The yamask turned left rather sharply, following the sounds of distress he'd just heard

Anya followed Drew through the weaving ruins, until they came across a crumbled wall. 

There was a familiar pokemon there, missing something very important

“Yamah!!” Drew called out to get its attention

The Unovan Yamask startled, immediately floating backwards in what seemed to be alarm and fear

“Y’r mask” Anya got right to the point “is y’r mask under there?” 

The pokemon still looked concerned, but nodded at her. 

“Hm.. looks heavy..” She grabbed a pokeball on her belt, releasing her Hatterene “Irene, I need y’r assistance f’r a moment” 

“Reenhe!” 

“Please move th’stones so this Yamask can get i’s mask back” 

Irene gave her trainer a nod, not even questioning it, and using a rather simple psychic ability to raise the stones off of the mask. 

“Drew, ask if they want me to pick it up for ‘em” 

“Yah!” Drew looked to the Yamask “Yam-Yamah! Mask!” 

“Y-ya…yahma…” The pokemon responded - looking a little less nervous. 

Drew turned back to Anya, and nodded. 

Anya returned Irene to her pokeball, and got down on one knee to take the mask in both hands, standing up and turned to face the cautious pokemon. She held out the mask “Here ya are. Take it” 

There was a bit of pause from the pokemon, before its clumsy hands reached forward and took the mask, placing it back on its hanging space on it’s "tail". 

“Better?” 

The Yamask nodded, giving her an interested look and floating closer to her, before Drew got in the way 

“Yama!” Drew seemed to threaten, startling the yamask, making it float backwards, practically cowering “Drew! Don’t be rude!” Anya scolded the pokemon “Ye can see e’s just curious!” 

“Yah!” 

“No!” 

The Unovan Yamask watched the two bicker back and forth, as if Anya knew exactly what Drew was saying. He looked like he was trying to scold her right back, and the yamask couldn’t help but snicker at the fight, causing them to pause. 

“... Shut up” Anya got the final word, looking at the yamask “Are you okay?” 

The yamask nodded 

“Good.. I need to sit down and eat something - hungry, Drew?” 

“Yamah!” Drew nodded

Anya thought for a moment, and turned to the other Yamask. “Would ya like t’join us?” 

“Yah?” 

“Aye, you?”

Drew looked almost offended for a second, but rolled his eyes, motioning for the Unovan variant to follow them 

The pokemon seemed to lighten up “Yahma!” They bounced around, getting a lopsided grin out of Anya, and they followed behind her as she turned, spotting a bench just a few meters away. 

By the end of the afternoon, the Yamask was leaving the ruins behind, following Anya north into Nimbasa City.
