Jaune More MC Ruby?
Ruby: That’s why I’m the MC and you're the side character.
Jaune: So because you have silver eyes you’re special?
Ruby: Yep.
Jaune: Even though I cheated Beacon.
Ruby: Yep.
Jaune: I was bullied.
Ruby: Yep.
Jaune: My partner is dead. And because I let my guard down, Ozpin died, and Oscar had no choice but to come on this journey. You know,  because of me.
Ruby: Yep.
Jaune: And because Cinder, who works under Salem killed my partner, I have beef with the main villain and her whole crew.
Ruby: Yeah.
Jaune: Salem, who I have way more in common with than most people, the deemed goddess I’m defying her, just like she did with the brothers over a loved one's death. Are you following me so far?
Ruby: … Yeah…
Jaune: Hazel, who mind you, lost his sister. He lost his sister because of the world Ozpin had created, like I did, with Pyrrha.
Qrow: She had a choice.
Jaune: A few days' choice which turned into minutes when Beacon was attacked. Then discovering how bad the situation is, you know with Salem being immortal, I almost hurt if not killed Oscar, making me at the spur of the moment,  just as bad as Hazel. And mind you I was willing to fight you on that.
Ruby: Uh… yeah…
Jaune: Tyrian, has the opposite to my semblance. Wasn’t he more interested in me than you? And you were his target.
Ruby: Mmhmm.
Jaune: Let’s talk about Cinder again. Cinder had two stray kids who followed her. I have Ren and Nora. Neither have parents. Also, we both want power but for different reasons. We even have different views on destiny.
Ruby: Oh damn.
Jaune: Atlas. Oscar did Ironwood not act like how I did in Argus but worse?
Oscar: Yeah he did. Jaune even saw Salem in person before you did.
Yang: So did we. You saw her face to face.
Oscar: I’m Ozpin. What is that supposed to mean?
Ruby: Oscar, not helping.
Jaune: Neo. We both lost our partners. The difference is that I have friends while she has none. The cat, him, and I almost have the same ability except he manipulates your soul or takes it. He might as well have been a devil version of me.
Weiss: O. Dear lord.
Jaune: Watts. … … … You know what no. He-he was no. Like he could have done better, he’s an example of being smart yet making the dumbest choices.
Weiss: True.
In the Twilight
Watts: What?! My decision was understandable.
Ironwood: No. No, they were not.
Penny: Like you could have logically put your two weeks in and left for another kingdom. Or country. Like Vale. Mistral. Anywhere. You could have helped where you could've been needed. Which would have made you better than my father.
Watts: I wasted my life.
Back to Remnant
Ruby: Um….
Jaune: You know what I have to ask this question. What is the moral of the story and how does your character fit into this?
Ruby: Well my-
Jaune: Let me retort. I lied. I was bullied. I had no idea about anything in the hunting world. I needed a teacher. I lost someone important to me. I have beef with the main villains. I train to get stronger to be of use to others.
Ruby: So?
Jaune: Okay. No one believed in me. But I still went to chase my goal. I lost the best thing in my life. I still moved forward. I had to kill someone. Still moved forward. I’m an old man trapped in a boy's body. Still moving forward. Fighting the odds that are stacked against me. I have seven who no one knows about. Yet your family is more interesting.
Ruby: Your point?
Jaune: The moral of the story is that no matter your circumstance you can always be better. Never allow destiny or grief to influence your entire life. No matter what odds that stand before you,  you can ultimately change your fate. And no matter the darkness a simple soul can light up the night and unite everyone against a greater evil. Even when the whole world is against you, you are never alone to endure it. If we stand united and look past our differences only then the wor;d would be a better place.
Ruby: Well my mom died at Salem’s hands.
Jaune: And?
Ruby: It's still relevant.
Jaune: You're right. But how many times has your mother been mentioned and you bothered to get information about her?
Yang: I-
Jaune: Bitch shut the fuck up. You were looking for the deadbeat mom more than the mom who stepped up.
Ruby: Well um… um…. Damn. Oh, but I-
Jaune: You weren’t the sword. I may not have known Penny as long as you, but the fact, that I could've saved her proved her death hit harder than Pyrrha's. I’m close to walking in Raven’s path.
Ruby: Shit.
Jaune: And back to your mother. She was a silver-eyed warrior. But Salem is still here. Do silver eyes work on her?
Ruby: Um.
Jaune: Because Salem is still both the brothers' creation. The old humanity. She can't be phased by the black liquid even though everything they touch decays.
Ruby: She's immortal.
Jaune: Yeah but again when Maria told you her story didn't she try using her silver eyes on humans and it didn't work?
Ruby: Cinder.
Jaune: Grimm arm.
Ruby: The hound.
Blake: Silver-eyed person too but only stunned them.
Ruby: Blake.
Blake: What a minute he had animalistic ears. Should I be concerned for my people?
Jaune: Yeah… we’re not getting into that. The point is if you go see Salem and your silver eyes don't work then your mom died for nothing.
Ruby: Oo. Um…
Jaune: And let's get back to the other villains. Besides Emerald, Mercury, and Tyrian, some of them have valid reasons to join Salem.
Ren: Jaune!
Jaune: Ren, your village got destroyed.
Ren: Nevermind.
Me: Hold up. Let me start. With Cinder, a huntsman saw what she was going through and didn't bother to help her. She was alone. The world abandoned her.
Jaune: So Hazel was right. In fact, Raven had a point.
Oscar(Ozpin): Mr. Arc I-
Jaune: Motherfucker Hazel had every right to be angry. Dude shadow missions involve us going with experienced hunters. Yet his sister died and Ruby could’ve died. Shadowing them. Following their lead. Does that not show how bad the hunting system is? Not just that we got hunters who died in the line of duty. Not to mention how some were sexually harassing the girls.  And some of them are just plain crazy or assholes. Not to mention Blake, Qrow, and Raven. You let them in. And to make matters worse you chose Pyrrha, a first-year student, to be your maiden.
Oscar(Ozpin): She was my best option.
Jaune: So Glynda wasn't on the table? A high-ranked fourth-year student wasn't on the table? Man, at least you could have chosen Ruby considering she has silver eyes and is a young upcoming prodigy. That would have made her more important. Like Ozpin Ruby off the bat was better than Pyrrha.
Qrow: Hey, I would have stopped that.
Jaune: O, so… it was okay with Pyrrha… but not your niece. I see. Hypocrite.
Qrow: Damn. Set myself up for that.
Jaune: Watts, despite his stupidity, had a point. James would abuse any source of technology just to have some level of control over something. Why did you think he wanted your sister instead of Penny? Why do you think he wanted Amity up as quickly as possible? Why do you think he hacked into Penny? Everything was always about control.
Weiss: Well our lives weren't easy.
Jaune: That I won't deny. Yet we are all still bad people.
Yang: Jaune my mother -
Jaune: Raven and Summer left you. Summer no one cared enough to talk about. Raven doesn't matter at all. Willow waited until her children were teenagers or young adults to start dealing with an abusive father. And Kali… yeah she should have slapped some sense into her daughter.
Weiss: Well your mom doesn't love you.
Jaune: Don't care. Back to Jacque though how does he and James know each other? Why do they have beef with one another? Unless… o. Oh no. Don't tell me. Did James set Jacque up with Willow? And in return, he helps James rise to power. Or did James love Willow but because of his career he couldn't marry her? Could Winter be-
Weiss: Please stop. I do not need those theories in my head.
Jaune: Fine. The point I'm trying to make is… … well how about you explain.
Me: It's crazy how Jaune fits the main character role better than Ruby.

The Arc's Wrath! 2
Continuation of this
Mama Arc: *Walking happily in her new flowered dress, given to her by her beloved husband, through the city*
!BOOM! !SECURITY ALARM GOING OFF!
Mama Arc: What's going on?
She looks in the direction of the sound and sees that one of the Banks is being looted by no one but the Brawen Tribe. She sees how they all get into their vehicles and escape at full speed. She then notices Raven, riding her motorcycle very close to the sidewalk where she is standing. The two made eye contact. And without changing lanes, she passes through a nearby puddle. Completely soaking her, dirtying her new dress. But the worst part was that Raven didn't apologize.
Big mistake.
Later:
Jaune is in bed trapped in a cuddle with Blake and Ruby after a while of the "Arc's Wrath". He tries to rest while the girls talk about how to show their affection towards him.
Ruby: How about some collars?
Blake: No, that sounds too simple. It doesn't represent the big love we have. It has to be something more permanent. Something that shows our deep and unbreakable love for Jaune.
Ruby: I see...
Jaune: Sorry, but can you two keep quiet? I'm very tired and I would like to sleep a little before-
*BAM!*
The door to his room shoots forward like a cannonball!
Jaune: God damn it! What now- *Gasp!* What happen to you?!
He says as he looks at his mom.
Mama Arc: *Soaked*...Yang and Vernal
Jaune: What?
Mama Arc: I need you to seduce and impregnate Yang and Vernal right fucking now!
Jaune: Yang and Vernal?! Why?! What happen?!
Mama Arc: She saw me on the street and instead of moving in line. She drove through a puddle and GOT ME AND MY NEW DRESS THAT YOUR FATHER GAVE ME WET WITH SEWER WATER!!!!!
She explodes in ANGER, scaring everyone in the room.
Jaune: Y-Y-Yang and Vernal you said? I-I-I'm on it.
Mama Arc: Thank you, and remember No protection.
Jaune: S-Sure.

Pairing : Idol!Yang Jeongin x F!Reader TW : Jeongin is mean ; reader insecurities ; breakup ; fluffy at the end though ; Word Count : 2.2k Request : @moon0fthenight : Can we do an aNNNNGGGSSTTTYYYY innie fic where reader is depressed but my man has been coming from home after a bad day and just takes hun it put on her, (like way bad) and everything comes down like her insecurities and stuff and she breaks up with hom but he begs her to stay A/N : Working on as many requests as I can!!! My request completion attempt will take a brief pause on the first week of July though so I can start working on Season 2 of Before You Fall!! But for now... ENJOY!! I feel like I kind of veered off the track of the actual ask, but it's still close and I hope you still like it!!
“I think work has just been really stressful for him lately.” Your phone was held between your shoulder and your ear as you worked on dinner, quickly cutting up the carrots as you listened to your mom.
“Maybe you should try to do something special with him? Try to keep his mind off work for a bit.” She offered up, and you hummed in agreement, turning your phone on speaker as you set it on the counter. “A small date, just getting him out of the house. It worked wonders with your father and I, that’s how we’re still together after all this time. Sometimes stress just piles up, you know.”
“Yeah… You’re right, I’ll try that.” You mumbled, setting down the knife and sighing heavily. “I’ll talk to you later, mom.” You said, quickly hanging up the phone and taking a deep breath. Jeongin was your first serious relationship, he was the first person that you could really see yourself with. You loved him, but sometimes he just… doesn’t show the same kind of empathy that you do. If Jeongin has a bad day at work, the rest of the evening would be just as stressful for you trying to please him. If you had a bad day at work, it was nothing, easily blown over.
For some reason, Jeongin just assumed that since he made more money, his job was more important than yours. His stress was worse than yours. His emotions were more important. Everything he did, everything he felt took priority over you. At first you let it slide, you just loved him so much and you wanted him to be happy, you wanted him to know that you cared, but you felt like it was time for him to care about you.
It’s not like your life was any easier just because you weren’t an idol, if anything, it was just as hard. You had to follow his schedules, making sure that dinner was done in time for when he got home even though you were never 100% sure when he’d be home. All of the guys knew about you, and when he was having relationship troubles, he could go to them for advice. You on the other hand had to keep it all a secret. No one could ever know that you were dating him, he wouldn’t be able to handle the scandals or the rumors. Your life was hard, and you were tired of pushing that all down for him, to make sure his life was simpler.
“I’m home.” Jeongin sighed from the front door, kicking his shoes off, the rubber soles marking up the wall where they hit. Not that he cared, he’d just have you clean the walls or repaint them if he finally came to realize it. “Hyunjin kept coming at me about the dances, I can’t get it right.” He slumped down into his chair, running his hands over his face.
“Well you just started learning the choreo two days ago… It’s not like you’re going to be a master at it immediately.” You responded, hoping that it would somehow make him feel better. “I got all the stuff to make your favorite dinner when I got off work. Do you want some?” You thought that maybe bringing up your own work would make him ask about it, pique his curiosity about how your day went.
“That’s great, babe. Get me a big bowl, I’m starving.” He sat up a little in his chair, and you nodded slowly, biting your lip as you walked over to the stove. Of course he didn’t care, he wasn’t even slightly interested in your life. It was all about him, always about him. Did you even exist in the relationship for anything other than cooking his breakfasts and dinners and washing his clothes? He didn’t even touch you anymore, not unless he was super bored and had nothing else to do.
You placed his bowl down and then grabbed your own, sitting across from him at the table. “Work was awful today… the customers were rude and my manager was short tempered and shitty because I wasn’t working fast enough…” Sure, he hadn’t specifically asked for the details, but maybe he’d show some sort of concern or maybe even compassion after hearing about your day.
His eyes rolled as he groaned. “It’s just retail, babe. Don’t be such a cry baby about it.” He said and you once again bit your lip, dropping your gaze into your bowl. “I have managers to listen to, Bangchan, I’ve got reporters up my ass all the time. I’d love to have it as easy as you do.” He took another bite of the soup, humming softly to himself. “Finish your dinner so we can watch our show.” He motioned towards your bowl that you had left untouched.
“I was thinking that… maybe we can go out… on a date or something?” You mentioned, picking up your spoon once more and taking a small bite of the soup. “Just to take your mind off of work… and to give me a small break from my job.” Your feet were tapping nervously under the table, your hand shaking as you held the spoon. “Even if it’s just the park… to walk around or something… I feel like I haven’t seen you in so long and…”
You trailed off, your eyes moving lower to look at your lap when you heard Jeongins sigh. “I literally just said I constantly have reporters following after me… and you suggest going out together?” His bowl was lifted to his lips as he took a long sip of the broth before placing the bowl down again, and even though you weren’t looking at him, you could feel him looking at you. “I’m sorry that I’m busy and I can’t just work 6 hours and come home and relax. Some of us don’t have it that easy.”
Everything you did was easy in his eyes. He didn’t know how you felt, he didn’t know what it was like. “It’s not… easy…” You muttered, your teeth pressing harder into your bottom lip as you tried to keep it from trembling. “I just wanted to spend time with you…”
“I’m not stopping you from spending time with me, but for Christ’s sake, I don’t want to hear about how awful your work is when my job is way harder than yours.” There it was again. Why was it a competition of who’s job was the worst? Why did it matter? Why couldn’t you just be there for each other? “My day was awful enough as it is, and then I want to just enjoy dinner and a movie with you and I have to hear about how rough it is to ring up a couple customers. It’s kind of annoying.”
Annoying… you were annoying…? “Just because I’m not dancing and singing… it doesn’t mean my job isn’t hard. You don’t even know what it’s like” You mumbled under your breath, but his eyes slightly widened as he leaned forward across the table to hear you better.
“Say that again… Speak up, I hate it when you mumble.” He groaned, reaching over to tilt your chin up. “And look at me when you’re talking so that I can at least try to read your lips if I can’t understand you.” Did he not even notice that you were trying not to cry right now?
“I said that… You don’t know what it’s like…” You said just a little louder now, and you could tell that he heard you, his finger falling from beneath your chin as he leaned back in his chair. “My boss is an asshole, I have to deal with customers that bitch and complain at me all day long, I barely even get a long enough break to breathe before I have to go back in and deal with it all over again. I come back home and I can’t talk to you about it because apparently my job and everything I do is shit to you. I’m so alone here and even if I had someone to talk to about how I feel, I couldn’t because no one can know about you and I being together… Even though it doesn’t even feel like we are.” You were breathing heavily as you looked at him, at least you hadn’t looked away yet. “Why are we together? I… I don’t even know… I… I want to break up.”
Now those words hadn’t actually been planned, and they most definitely hadn’t been thoroughly thought over before they had left your mouth, but now they were out, hanging in the air above the table like a chandelier. “You… Want to break up?” He questioned, as if giving you another chance to take back those words, god, he wanted you to take them back, but he didn’t want to say anything yet… He needed to know if you actually meant them.
So you thought it over, and you thought for what felt like a good bit before ultimately nodding your head. “There’s nothing here… for either of us… I don’t even know what we’re holding onto.” You sniffled softly before clearing your throat, and for the first time in weeks, you didn’t feel so nervous talking to him, everything was finally out on the table. “I’m tired of competing… I’m tired of feeling like I’m not good enough. You don’t even ask me how my days have been… it’s always all about you. I’m tired of giving my all and… not even getting 25% in return. I want to break up, Jeongin.”
There were many things in this world that your heart couldn’t handle seeing, and one of those things were tears in Jeongins eyes. His fox-like eyes completely glossed over as twinkling tears trickled down his cheeks had your heart aching. “Please… Don’t leave me…” He shakily whispered, his hands folded on the table as his thumbs rolled over each other. “You’re… You’re my first girlfriend and… I’m still learning how to do this right.” He took a deep breath, coughing immediately afterward as the lump in his throat got larger. “I’m trying, and I’m always scared that I’m not doing enough… and I was right… I’m not doing enough. I’m doing everything wrong.”
“Jeongin…”
“But you are good enough!” He cut you off with the choked out declaration, his head finally lifting to reveal his puffy red eyes as his tears continued to fall. “A-Ask Chan hyung…. I never shut up about you. I annoy the hell out of everyone there because you’re all I talk about. You’re the greatest thing that’s ever happened to me in my life, and I’m so lucky I have you and I don’t want to lose you just because I’m an idiot.”
“Jeongin… I…”
“And work has just been really stressful lately.” He continued, and you knew that it would be pointless to try to get a word in while he was ranting, so you sat back in your chair, watching as he continued to sob, his lips trembling as he spoke, giving his words a sort of vibrato. “I don’t know why I try to compete… I know that your job sucks too… You can quit it… I want you to quit it… I don’t want to think of people treating you like that. I’ll support you, I’ll support us… And I know that you’re tired of hiding… And I’m tired of it too… I’m gonna talk to management. I want to post pictures with you, I want to show everyone our matching outfits, I want to show everyone how beautiful you are, how lucky I am…” His words broke at the end as his face fell back into his hands, his breaths becoming heavy and quick as his sobs grew silent and his voice became hoarse. “Don’t… Don’t break up with me, please… Just one more chance… I’ll be better… I promise.”
You pushed away from the table and got up, watching his eyes widen with fear as he watched you, but you walked over to him, lowering down onto his lap and wrapping your arms around his neck. “I didn’t know you cared that much…” You whispered, kissing his cheeks that were salty with the tears that he had spilled. “I love you, Innie…”
His arms snaked around you, holding you on him, making sure that you won’t even try to get up. “I love you too… I love when you call me that…” The sigh of relief was audible even after his face was hidden against your shoulder, his voice muffled against the sleeve of your hoodie. “I don’t think I’ve panicked that much since right before we debuted.” He chuckled nervously, his eyes wide as he looked up at you. “Were you… Really going to break up with me though…?” Your own eyes wavered before you hesitantly nodded yes and then his eyes somehow widened even more. “Yeah well… You can’t do that. I won’t allow it. Next time you think about breaking up with me, talk to me first, and if I’m being an asshole, hit me… And if I’m still being an ass, then you can threaten me with leaving.” He took a deep breath before letting it out in one heavy huff. “Ugh, my eyes feel like they’re gonna fall out. Come… Come, it’s cuddle time, and we’re watching our movie and you’re not allowed to move unless it’s for a bathroom break or a snack trip.” He planted kisses all along your cheeks, pulling you closer every time you tried to move away. “No! Receive my love! All 100% percent of it! I’m never letting you go! You’re mine!”

One thing that always feels so funny for me when it comes to the Rosebird Parents Theory isn’t when people simply disagree with the theory, but rather people apparently seeing the prospect of a ‘Raven is Ruby’s real father’ reveal to be this totally unthinkable thing and how could anyone ever think this could happen?!
Because once you get past the whole ‘two ladies making a baby’ hurtle, Raven being Ruby’s dad really fits into so many well-known fantasy/sci-fi tropes. Many of which RWBY notably has not done yet, or have already been tied to Raven herself.
I mean, the mysterious villainous and/or anti-heroic loner with ties to the family pulling an ‘I am your Father’ reveal on the protagonist? That’s a fucking CLASSIC. Hell, let’s consider a few things about Raven:
Tumblr media
Big, intimidating helmet.
Tumblr media
Clear Samurai inspiration.
Tumblr media
Wields a katana-like sword that technically has an energy blade (dust=energy) which is generally RED-colored.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Possesses mysterious and terrible over-worldly powers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Has a mysterious past tied to our protagonist’(s) family.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Was probably in love with our protagonist’s (apparently) dead mother.
Tumblr media
Yeah I’d say Raven makes for a pretty good Darth Vader-expy.*
Beyond that specific case, we’ve already seen the story connect Raven to a BUNCH of ‘mysterious and angsty deadbeat dad who left their kid for unclear reasons’ tropes when it comes to Yang. Why not have those apply to Ruby as well? People have been clamoring for years about wanting to see Summer’s narrative dynamic with Yang explored as much as the one she has with Ruby, so why not have the reverse be true with Raven and Ruby as well?
After all, it seems that the story has now given Ruby a reason to seek Raven for answers just as Yang once did.
And as I’ve noted in previous Rosebird Parents posts, No I don’t believe Raven also being Ruby’s deadbeat dad would be somehow ‘redundant’. Particularly because the context is completely different: Yang has known that Raven is her birth-mother for most of her life, whereas Ruby would only just now be finding out that Raven is her birth-father. Far from being redundant, this would allow the story to explore two very different responses of kids to an absent parent: One who has had to live with the knowledge of that absent parent for years, and one who hasn’t and has to deal with this NEW information suddenly getting dropped on her.
Plus, as I alluded to earlier, it’s rather notable that RWBY hasn’t done some big ‘dramatic parent reveal’, given how much of a staple it is to the genre. And given how reimagining, twisting and flipping classic and well-worn fairytale/folklore/fantasy tropes (often via playing with gender-roles) is basically RWBY’s bread and butter at this point, I’d say giving the series heroine an ‘I am your father’ reveal from a woman would fit PERFECTLY in this series.
And if you’re going to ask ‘but how do two ladies make baby?!?’,
Raven can be intersex. Boom. Done.
Alternatively, magic.
As an aside, yes Summer being trans is a perfectly viable alternative. I just think logistically speaking, Raven being intersex and being Ruby’s ‘father’ makes a dramatic reveal a bit more streamlined. Also, the idea of Raven managing to be BOTH a deadbeat mom AND a deadbeat dad is just too funny XD
*Of course, this comparison gets even more fun when we consider Summer having her own Vader-parallels, ie; Summer almost certainly being taken by Salem and given what we can probably assume to be a Vader-esque makeover via grimm-hybridization in setup for a big reveal. So when we combine this with Raven, I think we can view what happened on their last mission as ‘What if Padme/Obi-wan got turned into Vader INSTEAD of Anakin?’ Like Raven in the present is basically Anakin doing Obi-wan’s traumatized hermit shtick, except all angry and edgy because it’s still Anakin.

yin and yang: carmy and sydney's creative processes + menu planning
Tumblr media Tumblr media
what i love about analyzing carmy and sydney is the way they mirror each other. their similarities and differences, and how they have the potential to complement each other well. truly make each other better at this.
this is most evident with the way they approach creating a dish.
sydney's creative process
Tumblr media Tumblr media
evidenced by sheridan (s01e05) and sundae (s02e03), sydney is very imaginative when it comes to creating a dish. the editing in these episodes gives us an intimate view of her creative process. recipes often come to her in dreams/daydreams.
sydney gets inspired by her passion for cooking, her family history and her city/world around her (architecture, nature, other restaurants in Chicago). this really fits into sydney's motivations as a chef.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sydney uses food to make people happy. She likes to take care of people. someone on here explained the significance of sydney wanting exactly one michelin star, which would signify affordable high quality food that normal everyday people have access to. in braciole she mentions to marcus that her dad and her didn't really go out to eat so when they did, they made it count and it was special. she wants to create an experience like that with her own spot (the Bear).
so naturally that is reflected in her food. its not simply a great meal, but a fabric/archive of her culture, history, worldview and entire character.
while sydney has a very imaginative creative process, she often just jots down her ideas in her little notebook(s), for later reflection.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
carmy's creative process
Tumblr media Tumblr media
carmy has a more tense relationship with cooking. while sydney and carmy are both amazing chefs, carmy seems to be more jaded and detached from his work.
for carmy he grew up in a household where food was a big part of his family. his mom, mikey, and nat can all cook well. he is naturally very great at it. he uses food to be closer to the people he loves. thats why in the face of rejection from his brother, he goes off and becomes one of the best chefs in the country out of spite. why he uses the beef to try and fix his relationship with mikey. why he was so devasted when syd quit and why he started his dream restaurant with her after she came back.
because we dont get an intimate look into carmys psyche when creating a dish, its harder to say but based off his monolouge in braciole (s01e8) and the way he uses food to connect with people he loves rather than having passion for it independently i can surmise that carmy isn't imaginative as sydney. food is more like a math equation (ironic)/a science.
“he’s the best bc he didn’t have any of the bullshit”, emotional ties/relationships of any kind. his career esp at EMP were isolating, rigid and cold. he was the best bc he was calculating, precise and competitive. which breeds excellence in his field while straying him further away from love and true passion.
i imagine carmy to be more pragmatic with creating a dish.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
but carmy is a creative person at his core and while creating a dish might not be as colorful as when sydney does it. we do know that carmy can draw and visualize his ideas onto paper. "Sistine Chapel" level drawings according to syd.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
sydney + carmy - potential true partnership
on my 3rd rewatch, i couldn't help but feel so dissatisfied with their partnership. granted this is on purpose since the show is only 2 seasons in and they are trying to do a slow burn in all aspects, not just romantic.
it really hit me that carmy and sydney have never - at least on screen - created a meal together. in s1, we never see the risotto come to fruition, we just get carmys input but never the finished product. in s2 finally, carmy and Sydney work together now that their dynamic has changed from boss and employee to partners. we get like what? 4 scenes of them creating the menu, and having this amazing professional chemistry but ultimately leads to two failed dishes, which would be ok if they worked together after that. but they dont...
instead for the rest of the season, we see them (mainly Syd) working on the menu separately. the menu is....alright. mainly has carmy written all over it (he has a the seven fishes + cannolis, weird homage to one of the worst nights of his life).
Tumblr media
*putting on another pair of shipper goggles to say this makes the whole "you make me better at this" confession, even more mind-boggling bc better at what? you guys haven't even worked together all season. this = life , i rest my case*
in s3 and beyond, im excited for them to truly start working together as partners and actually see them create a dish together.
i want to see how their approaches to creating a dish can help the other.
how sydneys creative process can help carmy
besides the obvious romantic implications of the palette cleanser outing, the potential for them to understand each other on a deeper level in regards to food is something i mourn everyday.
after sydney goes on her trip solo, we see her ride the ferry and just take a look at her surroundings. shes thinking about the food she ate, shes looking at buildings, windows, looking at the snow. all inspiration for a dish.
imagine if carmy was there with her. he would be curious about what she's thinking about, get insight on how she creates and maybe want to learn to see food in a less practical way.
i mean he hadn't drawn in years it seems until he was inspired by sydney and the chaos menu to draw again....now imagine if he didn't ruin the moment by bringing up claire (LMFAO). the point is, sydney naturally sparks creativity and passion in him, even when they aren't together.
i know many people are theorizing that carmy will leave the culinary industry (and i agree most of the time) but i also think sydney is slowly but surely helping him discover/re-discover a passion for cooking. i think that carmy likes that sydney likes to take care of people because subconsciously he knows he does the same thing or has the potential for it (i.e making tiff sprite from scratch when she was experiencing morning sickness). evidenced by fishes (s02e6), care often feels like an obligation (he takes care of drunk donna when shes going through an episode) but it doesnt have to be this way. and now carmy wants to get a star for her....their interests are slowly aligning.
how carmys creative process can help sydney
this isn't as concrete as the one above but i found it interesting thinking about how carmys more pragmatic approach and sydneys idealistic approach can work in tandem.
first scene in pop (s02e5) shows sydney and tina late at night working on the tasting menu. later in the episode we find out that carmy has been pushing back menu planning leaving sydney on her own. she trying an elements concept which is extremly creative and impressive but even tina says, which sydney later agrees, that its a lot for a tasting menu.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
im stretching maybe....but based on carmys comment on her risotto from the season before (needs acid) + his practical approach, it seems like he acts like a buffer when sydneys ideas get "a lot".
*in chemistry buffers are solutions added to resist pH changes when acidic and basic components are added*
Tumblr media Tumblr media
so if carmy needs to be more creative and sometimes sydneys ambitions gets ahead of her....
sydney is the heart, while carmy is the brain (???)
one cannot work without the other. when they truly come together to create the menu, they both need to learn from one another to elevate the restaurant. not to mention with carmy's italian american roots and syd's Nigerian-Caribbean/southern roots, they have the potential for amazing fusion dishes and real partnership. i and others want the menu to physically reflect both of them.
conclusion
i literally dont know where im going with this. sorta kinda meta but its more like hopes and dreams for next season and me wanting to type my ideas down.
they complement each other well ok? and have potential for a great partnership once they communicate better. i like this part of the definition of yin and yang:  Their interaction is thought to maintain the harmony of the universe and to influence everything within it.
carmy and Sydney are the leaders of the bear, their relationship is foundational to the success of their restauarnt and team, once they work together truly, play to their strengths and weaknesses, then will come true harmony in their universe.
bonus
more sydcarm parallels/similaries/differences/yin yang moments:
carmys gold chain, syds silver earrings
carmys white t-shirts, syds white button ups
carmy is bad at math, syds great with numbers
carmy wasn't really great at school, this is sorta fanon but i can imagine syd excelled in school
both wear birkenstocks (more a chef thing but i still think its cute)
sunshine x grumpy trope but like better...usually the sunshine (syd) is more emotionally vulnerable making a space for grumpy (Carm), but they switch positions. carmy allows sydney to be more emotionally vulnerable often initiating deep conversations, while syd is more closed up/guarded
overall tho i think its cute that they are both shy/emotionally stunted but i do think purely aesthetic wise, sydney has a softer exterior ( doe eyes, colourful scarves, awkward) while carmy is more intimidating (tats, smokes, looks angry all the time)
both fight dirty - i.e their individual fights with richie (review, the bear)
carmy tho is more prone to outbrusts of anger/violence while sydney lets that shit shimmer until she explodes on you
both their passcode being 11111
carmy having dark mode on his phone, syd having light mode in s2
their matching clothes moments earlier in the second season and in bolognese
if theres more, pls comment/reblog, bc i always think of this shit and need more to cry about
fin!

Now that we have come to the end of the drama... Drama vs. Webtoon time!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm going to do this one a little differently, head to head, did the drama or the webtoon do it better in Marry My Husband?
Drama did it better! ML's Original Death
So in the webtoon, Ji-hyuk goes to Ji-won's funeral and then just offs himself by walking into the sea. It's not super clear why, like he barely knew Ji-won, and it felt really pathetic. I preferred the car accident.
Webtoon did it better! Su-min killing Min-hwan's mom
This didn't even come close to happening in the drama, but Su-min comes home to find the MIL from Hell having a stroke and then just turns around and leaves her on the floor. When it looks like she might recover, Su-min injects air into her veins and she dies. Su-min goes to prison for this as she doesn't kill her husband. Anyway, the drama showed us MIL very sad after her son's death, but I preferred this ending since she spent so long abusing Ji-won in the original timeline.
Drama did it better! Not So Much Love Triangle
Poor Eun-ho spent a lot more time pining after Ji-won in the webtoon. Happy that he got resolution there. Also, never felt like Eun-ho had a chance in the drama which I preferred.
Webtoon did it better! Eun-ho & Hui-yeon
I couldn't believe how little screen time these cuties got! Give me Hui-yeon proposing (at least she confessed first), give me them being in love! Why was Eun-ho not in the time-jump scene at the end?
Toss-up: Mr. Lee & Mrs. Yang
I liked the character of Mr. Lee better in the drama, but I liked Mrs. Yang's story better in the webtoon. Mr. Lee is way too nice in the webtoon, I liked his supportive and yet kind of rude persona in the drama. However, I wanted more of their story, in the webtoon Mrs. Yang's ex tries to kidnap their daughter as leverage, which is stopped, and then Mr. Lee has a very cute relationship with Mrs. Yang's daughter, who asks her mom if she'll marry Mr. Lee. We didn't really get any confirmation that they would end up together in the drama!
Drama did it better! Min-hwan's ending
Was it so satisfying to see him get the same ending he gave to Ji-won? Yes it was. In the webtoon, he sabotages his own car hoping that Su-min will die and he'll get the inheritance money. But then he drives his car to see his mom (after her stroke) and drives off a bridge. I liked this ending better.
Drama did it better! Mains as Parents
I felt like the webtoon went a little too far in making Ji-hyuk the only providing parent. I'm all for women working, but it just seemed unrealistic to me. I liked seeing both of them exhausted on the couch with their twins.
Toss-up: Plots that I Didn't Love
I really disliked Yu-ra in the drama, who I guess had to be included so she could take Ji-hyuk's fate. I think the webtoon was smart to cut her and I found her really annoying and over the top. However, I also didn't love the plot in the webtoon where Ji-won catfishes both Su-min and Min-hwan so that she can reproduce the betrayed by a friend thing. So I guess they both struggled with the third act.
Webtoon did it better! ML Doesn't Inherit
In the webtoon, Ji-hyuk decides to run his own security company and Ji-won continues at the original company. I guess the drama preferred a super rich power couple, but the webtoon was better in that way for me. I didn't love Ji-won becoming a stereotypical rich wife with a charity...
Webtoon did it better! MORE CAT
Pang (mold) the cat has a whole chapter from his POV in the webtoon. It was so cute!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Drama did it better! The Family Dinner
Honestly, I didn't think anything could top the webtoon's family dinner where Ji-won shows up in her revenge get-up, but I just loved Ji-won flipping Min-hwan so much!
Tumblr media
Lastly, the drama really made Min-hwan and Su-min great characters. All the awards for Su-min's actress especially. Those two really came alive in a way that the webtoon just didn't do.
(and yes, I know the drama was based on the original webnovel but I'm not reading that, I like webtoons, and both are adaptations so fair comparison).

Honestly I thought we'd left the “Tai was neglectful” discourse back years ago.
Because yeah, he was. I get him: he was left by his first wife and her second one disappeared and never came back, and that he suddenly saw himself a single father of two, still having to work to support them while he was still grieving, and the only person who could help him probably had to keep his distance most of the time because he was afraid his bad luck would affect them. And I understand that he was incredibly depressed, and that he loves his daughters more than anyone in this world and that eventually he came back from it (we see him spending time with his daughters and reading stories to them in canon content), and Yang did say in volume 5 that her father was always busy with school, so I also assume that the guy worked a lot and that he always made sure Yang and Ruby had their basic necessities covered. But he did neglect Ruby and Yang emotionally for a while, and that did affect Yang. That's it. He's not a bad person, he just wasn't the best father for a while.
It's sort of like Willow. She was a caring mother for her children when their kids were little; Weiss really implied it. And seeing she is able to summon Grimm, I assume she could fight and that she even could have been the one who taught Winter how to do so (and Winter's original outfit seemed to be based off hers in portrait, so I assume they were close). But then Weiss' tenth birthday happened, and everything came crashing down. She became very depressed, and started drinking to numb that pain, becoming an alcoholic. I do feel bad for Willow; I know that she really does love all her children, and that in volume 8 she took a turn, stopped drinking and started repairing her relationship with at least two of her children. I know she's trying to be better now, but that doesn't change the fact that she was neglectful towards her kids as well. She didn't only allow Jacques to still abuse her those years, she also allowed her kids to be abused because she was usually to drunk or depressed to do anything. We saw that the closest thing to a proper mother figure Weiss had growing up was Winter herself, who was only fifteen when her mother shut down and had to take on that role. We've all also seen how Winter turned out, emotionally repressed trying to distance herself as much as she can from her entire family as possible, not just Jacques. And we saw Whitley; how lonely he felt because his sisters got to leave and he's stuck with their abusive father and their alcoholic mother, that he was so young when his mother shut down that he probably doesn't even remember when she was a loving mom, and how he at first could barely even stand being in the same room with Willow or her talking to him because he resented her.
They both made mistakes and that has shaped their kids being the way they are, not only because their mom left or died or because their father is abusive. That doesn't mean I hate them, of course. I love both Willow and Tai, I don't think they're bad people, I want to see their families heal and I wanna see them spend time with their kids, and most of all, I know that they'd give their lives if that meant seeing their kids safe because despite everything, I don't doubt that Tai loves Yang and Ruby and that Willow loves Whitley, Weiss and Winter as well, more than anything in the world. That's all.

𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐢𝐫𝐥𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 - yang jeongin

wc: 5.6k
warnings: language, making out, a lot of timeskips, willow symbolism, cheating, chaewon from lesserafim is a character in this?, attempted assault, mentions of alcohol, fighting, mentions of cuts/bruises/blood
Tumblr media
you remember the day you met yang jeongin like it was yesterday.
you are eight years old, sitting at your kitchen table, intently coloring a picture of a cat with your brand-new markers. your mom is hard at work in the kitchen, the delicious smell wafting into your nostrils. you sigh, eliciting a giggle from your mother.
"are you sure i can't have any? that cake smells so good!" you whine, turning around to face her. she shakes her head, smiling gently.
"i'm sorry, honey. this cake is a present, so we can't have any." she explains, wiping her hands on the embroidered apron before placing them on your shoulders. "remember how the chois moved out of their house last month, because mrs. choi got a new job?"
you nod, a pout on your face. "i miss yeonjun."
"i know, but he was a little hard to play with sometimes, given he's eleven...and you're eight." she chuckles. "however, good news - our new neighbors, the yangs, moved in today. they have a son your age! isn't that lovely?"
"i guess..." you say, staring at your certainly...unique art. "i hope he's nice. all of the boys at my school are kinda mean."
"well, i met mrs. yang at the market today, and she was very kind. she seems like she'd raise her son to act that way, too." your mother reassures you. "how about when i finish frosting this cake, you come with me? you can meet the new boy."
so now, here you are: standing in front of the yangs' door alongside your mother, clinging tightly to the fabrics of her skirts. she holds a small pan in her hands, foil over the cake itself.
she rings the doorbell, waiting for a little bit before a small hand slowly slides the door open. you are met with a boy your age, looking at you with wide, curious eyes. he has dark hair sliced into a bowlcut, which you'll always tease him about when you are older. from behind him, his mother comes out, saying a warm hello to you before embracing your mom and letting her inside. you follow her, the little boy never taking his eyes off you.
"mrs. yang, this is yn. honey, say hi." your mother urges you. your small, pudgy hand waves. "yn, jeongin. jeongin, yn."
the two women start conversing about all sorts of things - farmers' markets, schools nearby, gardening and your mother's not-so-successful attempt at a vegetable garden - all kinds of topics that would bore a child to death. thankfully, mrs. yang notices this and kneels down next to her quiet son, whispering to him.
"jeongin," his mother says affably, "can you keep little yn company? i'm gonna talk to their mom." he nods, mouthing an "okay". he grabbed your hand and the two of you traverse outside to his backyard. you've been out here many times before, but the yangs have truly transformed it. they'd planted flowers, and put out furniture. you sit down into a wooden lawn chair, swinging your legs. jeongin stands beside you, before he finally speaks in a sweetly beautiful voice. you don't know it yet, but you'll live to hear that soft melody that floats from his lips.
"how long have you lived here?" he asks you.
"since i was...um...three?" you count on your fingers. you turn, pointing to the large willow tree in the back of his backyard. "you see that tree?"
"yeah," jeongin nods. he walks up to the green giant, running his small fingers along the smooth bark. "it's really pretty. how do you know it's a willow tree?"
"yeonjun told me." you reply. when jeongin tilts his head, you remember that the boy doesn’t exactly know your best friend. "he lived here before you. he taught me how to climb that tree." you stand beside him as the leaves that boast beautiful shades of verdant brush against your head.
"i like...climbing trees." jeongin says quietly, his cheeks flushed. you giggle. he points to the tree's branch, wide enough for two. "you wanna?"
this is how you come to sit upon the branch, your side pressed against jeongin's as he holds onto the trunk tightly.
"are you scared...what's your name? sorry, i'm not great with names..." you ask, puzzled. he uses a finger to mime drawing out his name onto the gnarled wood.
"yang jeongin." he spells out each consonant, vowel, and syllable. it takes that one time for the name to be forever etched into your memory.
"jeong...ugh." you sigh loudly, having trouble with his name. "can i just call you innie?"
"innie..." he trails off as he says it. "i like that. can we be friends?"
you nod eagerly.
"okay, but you gotta promise to be my best friend. forever. deal?" you extend your pinkie, your gaze hopeful.
this is the first time jeongin notices your aura. it is like the end of may, lush yet neither freezing cold or burning hot. it is warm and loving, graciously accepting any kindness it receives like spring rain to a garden, and giving that very kindness tenfold. he decides he'd quite like to stay basking in your radiance.
"deal."
now, you are thirteen years old, and jeongin is nothing short of your best friend. over the last five years, you have grown closer and closer until your mothers joke you are joined at the hip. you are lucky he's next door, so that after school you can just walk right into his house and upstairs into his room, if your mom isn't home. his parents love you to death.
you get home after a long day of school, and since you saw your mother's note saying she'd be working late, you immediately decide you'll make your way to jeongin's. but first, you throw your backpack to the floor, and excitedly run up to your bedroom to grab his present, wrapped in love and patterned paper. then, it is time to surprise your friend.
when you arrive, he is laying on his bed, earbuds in his ears. you can slightly hear his music when you sit down beside him, it sounds like some 90s rock song you can't quite make out. and then, you look at his face.
his eyes are shut almost daintily. they're not squeezed shut, as if he's trying to hide from reality, it's almost like he wants to dream. his lips are pursed, almost, and they look pillowy. you freak out once it hits you that you're not just thinking about a boy's lips, but the lips of your best friend. two hands are folded over the other, resting on his sternum. he opens his eyes and two dark pools of pure espresso filtered in a french café are gazing up at you.
"hi." he grins, his smile even cuter with his braces on. ew, no! what are you thinking?!
"hello," you begin, setting the present on his stomach. "happy birthday, innie! i know i've already told you, but i brought you a gift this time. therefore, i'm allowed to say it again!" in response to this, he sits up, eagerly staring at the mysterious box.
"therefore?" he raises an eyebrow at you. "what are you, a nerd? i've never heard that word in my life." you swat at his head, and he laughs loudly. he mutters something you don't catch under his breath, probably paired with a nasty nickname, but then he opens his gift, and he goes silent.
"these...are the shoes i really wanted. i never told you. how did you know?" he looks at you with wonder, inspecting them before realizing that they truly are the genuine article. his dream shoes were now his, and it was all because of you. "these are so expensive...did your mom pay for them?"
you shook your head, grinning.
"nope. i've been saving since november, because i remembered how longingly you'd stare at them in the window when we passed the shoe store. i've been babysitting to get extra money, that's why i haven't been coming around as often." he stares at you as if you are athena herself, equipped with endless novelty and wisdom. jeongin engulfs you in an enormous hug, squeezing you so impossibly tight it feels like the breath has been completely banished from your respiratory system.
"i love you, so, so much. you're the greatest friend i could ever ask for." the words ring in your head as you hug him back, a symphony of feelings and expressions energetically harmonizing to form a crescendo at complete fortissimo. your head is fucking pounding. your arms wrap around him tighter and tighter until he has to physically tap out, and you separate from him, a tad embarrassed. he's staring at your face rather oddly, so you quickly change the subject to avoid total humiliation.
"what song were you listening to? i could vaguely hear it when i came in." you say quickly, reveling in the way jeongin's eyes light up when you mention this. he takes out an earbud and places it in your ear.
"it's creep, by radiohead. it's really a beautiful song." he explains, grinning ear to ear as he presses play. the song that follows is a classic 90s rock song with haunting lyrics. but what startles you more is when jeongin sings along.
his voice is inexplicably alluring, soft and filled with emotion. the grief that hangs upon every syllable is beautifully gut-wrenching. you watch him, entranced by every moment of his lips and vocal cords. he sings the song like he has been personally wounded by the lyrics, and your eyes are opened. wide. jeongin never told you he could sing.
and suddenly...you feel a weird feeling in your stomach. it's warm and pools slightly, but it's so wonky that you feel sick. yang jeongin is like a spider, and he has officially caught you in his delicate web of silk.
one week later, it is valentine's day and you are sitting alongside jeongin beneath the graceful willow tree, now barren and cold as it boasts no leaves. you are too big to sit amongst its branches, but it does not mean your affections for the lovely piece of flora have faded one bit. you lean your head back until it hits the wide trunk and you sigh over-exaggeratedly, although you feel as if it gets all your emotions out.
"everybody was fawning all over you, innie. it was hilarious." you say quietly, and he nods, resting his head on your shoulder. "who did you choose to be your valentine? there were so many options."
he turns to look at you and it suddenly occurs to you the actual proximity between the two of you. he blinks, looking at you peculiarly.
"i thought we'd already established that we were each other's valentines. i even got you something?" your cheeks heat up at his words. when he thinks that you don't believe him, he pulls a satchel out of the pocket of his jacket. "here. look at them."
inside his fabric satchel are two rings, the insides inscribed with twisting silver tree branches.
"what are they, innie? oh my god…they're beautiful." you say with wonder, and he blushes sheepishly.
"these are promise rings. don't worry, they're not like coupley or anything, but they symbolize our friendship and how we'll be together until the end of time.. it'll be as if every single core memory of ours is one ring on the inside of a sequoia trunk. isn't that just lovely?" you nod eagerly, a little too excitedly, and he chuckles. "if it's not too much to ask - can i put it on for you? please?"
when you give your approval, the scene feels like something out of a fairytale. you are sitting beneath a huge piece of your childhood memories, fighting your own emotions as your best friend in the whole wide world looks up at you like you carry the universe on your back as he slips a silver promise ring onto your left hand. you admire it, your lips curling the slightest bit upwards as the sun's rays reflect off it. you can't fathom how happy you are. will things always stay this way, forever and ever?
spoiler alert: they won't, because now you are sixteen years old and jeongin has a girlfriend. this is his third one, to be exact.
and, for starters: you are hopelessly in love with him.
you feel really pissed whenever you see them together, his arm wrapped lazily around her waist, listening intently as she eagerly tells him about her day. but he seems so happy, you don’t want to ruin everything by confessing your feelings and making shit weird, so your mouth stays shut. you watch him laugh with her as they walk, hand in hand, and you don’t have the heart to point out that the silver accessory he wears on his ring finger is his promise ring to you. you can’t help but smile at the thought that it’s been three years and you haven’t seen him without it on once.
you sit beside him at lunch, and his girlfriend, chaewon, has an all of a sudden appearance that turns your longtime duo into a trio. you try to be nice to her, you don't want to lose your best friend of eight years just because you don't like the girl he's dating (and she's so sweet too), but there's this aching pang in your body as your heartstrings resonate with a melancholic concerto.
"yn," she says softly, her lips turned upwards as she smiles like a pageant queen. "do you wanna hang out after school? i wanna get to know you better, you're so nice!"
you're not sure what to say, so you nod. chaewon squeals excitedly and clasps her hands together. jeongin beams at the sight, and his infectious smile has you melting.
later, after your last class and a quick run home to change, you walk down the sidewalk to the local coffee shop, where you'll be meeting up with chaewon for your little hangout session. there she is when you walk in, in all her glory, her dark hair glossy and gorgeous as the waiter practically fawns over her. you feel a surge of jealousy, knowing people had never looked at you that way. hell, you've never even been in a relationship.
however, you can't help but feel a little flustered when she notices you, her eyes lighting up as she gets up to twirl you around excitedly, gushing about how stylish you are. her compassionate and bubbly personality makes you feel even worse. you feel like you're being so fake to her.
how would chaewon feel if you looked her dead in the eyes and told her you were madly in love and devoted to her boyfriend? would she stare at you in shock? would she rip her hand away from yours in disgust? or would she lean over the wooden table, a grin on her face as she crushed your hopes and dreams like a little bug beneath her heel?
however, your lips stay sealed and you shake the worry off as you converse with her, listening as she tells some story about her middle school days that you honestly couldn't care less about, and your mind trails off to the confusing math lesson you attempted to learn today. however, when her voice changes from it's usual high, cheery timbre to one that's softer and a bit nervous, you snap out of your thoughts.
"can i be honest about something?" she says, reaching over the table to take your hands in hers. you don't want to be a bitch, so you give her a warm smile and nod.
"of course, go ahead."
she launches into a rant about her relationship, but not in the way you expected.
"i'm so nervous. jeongin is like- the first guy i've actually had feelings for in a while and he's so kind and sweet and i love the physical touch aspect of our relationship. however...if we're gonna kiss i'm so scared, because i've never even had my first kiss. what if i'm not experienced enough and he dumps me? he's kissed people before. what if i suck compared to him?" your mouth drops open and chaewon looks at you weirdly. "is...everything okay?"
you nod quickly, a bit embarrassed you interrupted her train of thought. you were very confused. you and jeongin had reached that level of trust where you told each other everything...so why hadn't you heard about him having kissing experience? after you say goodbye to chaewon and exchange numbers, you march right over to jeongin's house. his mom opens the door, giving you a hug and letting you know that jeongin was studying upstairs. you throw his door open, and he jumps, startled. he's sitting at him desk, turned to stare at you with wide eyes.
"what was that for? if you make a dent in the wall, my mom's gonna be sooo mad." jeongin whines, and you sit down on his navy bedspread with a huff. "what's got you all riled up? did something go wrong with chae?"
that nickname makes your very blood boil. however, you remind yourself again and again that chaewon isn't the problem, it's who she's dating.
"no, no. it's fine, great, actually. chaewon is so sweet. i feel like we've hit it off. however, we were talking earlier and she said that...you told her you had experience with...kissing?" you stare at his suddenly very interesting ceiling to recollect yourself, before staring back at his face, which is redder than a tomato. "i, um, didn't know you'd been kissing people already. why didn't you tell me? i thought we didn't keep stuff from each other. unless you didn't think it was important or anything and i'm just making a big deal-"
"no, no you're not!" jeongin suddenly interrupts you, standing up out of his chair. you look at him, a bit frightened, and he walks over to his bed to sit alongside you. he hides his face in your shoulder, sighing loudly. "i didn't want chae to think i was some nerdy kid who was like innocent as hell...so i may have exaggerated some of my previous relationships? i have...never kissed anyone. and now, i'm gonna make a fool out of myself."
the words escape your lips before you can stop yourself. it's like you are tantalus, standing in the water, reaching desperately for those ripe, plum-colored grapes so horrendously out of reach. in the future, you'll look back and wonder if this was a good idea, knowing the consequences and rewards.
"you could, um, practice with me? just so you're ready for her. no strings attached or anything." you cover your mouth with your hands the minute you say it. what is he gonna think? he's gonna hate you...
but then you meet his gaze, and his cheeks are the color of pretty pink peonies. he's chewing on his lip nervously, twiddling his thumbs.
"okay." you never expected the words to escape his lips. so you inch closer, laughing off the nerves. "so...what do i do first?"
"so um...close your eyes?" you guess. jeongin lets out a laugh. "then how am i supposed to know where to kiss you?"
"then leave your eyes open!" you sigh, giggles coming from both of you. "let's just figure it out. i guess we have to like- feel it out?"
"you look really silly from this angle. it's like a fisheye lens."
"if you don't shut up i'll smack you, right here, right now." you reply teasingly, until he shuts you up with a kiss.
it is weird and unplanned, with neither of you really understanding how to do it, but after a little bit, you begin to simply feel the kiss out. jeongin's left hand goes to caress your cheek. it escalates and escalates until he pulled you down on top of him, and you snap back into reality, pushing yourself off him. you stand up, pacing, your face in your hands.
when jeongin tries to place a reassuring hand on your shoulder, you flinch.
"i'm so sorry, innie." you say, taking deep breaths. "i completely overstepped my boundaries. i go hang out with chaewon, and fuck, she thinks of me as a friend? and then the minute i arrive home i'm making out with her boyfriend. god, i'm a horrible person."
"hey, don't say that." jeongin says softly, pulling you into his arms and holding onto you tightly. "judging by the surprise and humiliation on your face after you suggested it, you obviously didn't mean what you said. it's my fault for making you go along with it. i'm so sorry."
"what are we gonna do about it?" you ask quietly, embarrassed. jeongin gives your hand a squeeze before replying.
"we won't bring it up. ever."
and so, again, you make a promise with jeongin, but this one is built off your undying loyalty to him. you pledge a promise of dishonesty and lying and infidelity. and just as you said, not a single word ever leaves your lips about it again.
this promise is broken when you are nineteen years old.
you, jeongin, and chaewon all ended up going to the same college. even though chaewon and jeongin's relationship did not last, your friendship with chaewon is nearing three years. you will not speak of your misdemeanor with her ex-boyfriend, though.
she's truly radiant now, with short black hair and a face sculpted like a pixie. and since she's been deemed the campus it-girl, being her best friend results in you going to a lot of parties. none of them are truly eventful until one cloudy night mid-september.
you're sitting on hyunjin's kitchen counter, a drink in your hand as you talk to the boy hosting the party. jeongin's here somewhere, you assume, and chaewon will be here any minute - she was at yunjin's getting ready. you've truly gotten accustomed to the ebb and flow of college life, which has been a lot easier with good friends. as this thought crosses your brain, the doorbell rings, loud and shrill, signaling your friends' arrival. you laugh to yourself, finishing your drink. you feel a bit tipsy, so you go out to the back porch to clear your head.
"aren't you cold? it's halfway through september, and you're wearing a tanktop. which is very flattering on you, might i add." the unfamiliar voice causes you to turn, and you fight back a grimace when you see who it is.
it's this guy who's been following you around non-stop since the start of your freshman year. you don't even know his name, but he's creepy as hell and winds up at every single party you go to. you never try and be alone at one of these parties because of him, but he caught you off guard this time. the douchebag leans against a support beam, beer in his hand, and a shit-eating grin upon his revolting features.
"oh, um, i left it at my dorm. i'll just grab one of hyunjin's before i leave so the walk home isn't freezing." you explain rapidly. as you go to slip back inside, he grabs your arm, his palms sweaty. you throw up a little in your mouth.
"you sure? i feel like we could get better acquainted. i could warm you up, i bet." he slurs his words, and you suddenly feel trapped like a caged animal. you try and slip out of his grip, but it's tighter than anything you've felt before.
"oh, no thank you. it's obvious you're under the influence-" you're cut off by the guy making an attempt to kiss you right on the lips, and you dodge him. "i told you to get off me, you dick!" you yell. your heart is pounding. it's like eleven at night, and music is blasting inside. what if nobody comes to help?
the man grunts, slamming you against the wall of the house. you let out a loud scream, praying somebody hears you. the man groans, muttering something about how women are so emotional, and puts a hand over your mouth. you're about to bite him, get him off you so you can run the fuck away, and then you watch as a fist connects with the man's cheek, knocking him to the ground. you look around frantically for your savior, and then you meet eyes with him.
yang jeongin has just saved your life. he's panting, his eyes wide and hair disheveled as he stares at his bloody fist.
"are you okay?" he practically yells, checking you for any signs of injury. "i was outside talking to chae, and then i heard you yell. i knew something was up when i heard a loud thump and a shriek. god, i was so worried that something happened to you." he wraps his arms around you, pulling you into a bone-crushing hug. however, you can see from behind him, the man is getting up, and he's holding his beer bottle about to hit jeongin. and since you're already indebted to jeongin, the action is like quick thinking for you.
you turn, and the brunt of the force from the glass hits your arm. you let out a yelp of pain as the shards dig into your skin, and you sink to your knees.
jeongin sees red.
you blink and he's got the guy on the ground, beating the shit out of him again and again until hyunjin and chae have to physically pull him off the guy.
"jeongin, get yn home. i'll deal with this." hyunjin says darkly. he's annoyed that the party was ruined, but you know that he'll be so proud of jeongin once he learns the entire story. jeongin takes your hand and leads you out of the yard and onto the road. you shiver as the cool winds hit your skin, goosebumps forming along your limbs. jeongin notices this and takes off his jacket, enveloping you in his warmth.
"aren't you going to be cold, innie?" you say, wincing with every step. he shakes his head. "we'll be inside soon enough. can you walk, or does it hurt too bad?"
"i don't know, it hurts a lot..." you say quietly, staring down at the blood oozing from your arm. when jeongin sees this, he stops in his tracks, lowering himself to let you get onto his back in a piggyback position. being the gentleman he is (even though your legs aren't even injured), he carries you home. you won't admit it, but a small smile has formed upon your face.
when you arrive at your dorm, jeongin basically sprints to grab a first aid kit. you sit on the bathroom counter, swinging your legs. he comes back, holding rubbing alcohol and a pair of tweezers.
"this might hurt a little. i'm so sorry." he murmurs gently in advance. with one hand, his fingers are intertwined with yours, so tightly you think if you squeeze any harder they'll pop off. the other one carefully removes the glass shards from your arm and applying bandages. when your arm is safely wrapped, his hands turn your face left and right to make sure there's no sign of injury. once he's sure that you're okay, he leads you into your bedroom, dutifully turning around so you can change. once you're comfortably in your bed, jeongin sits next to you. his thumb grazes over your hand idly. the moon casts pale rays the color of fresh snow onto your comforter. it is plush and navy blue, sort of like the one jeongin's childhood room had growing up.
"i'm so glad that's over." you sigh, resting against the pillows. jeongin looks at you, concern upon his beautiful features. the way he looks at you like you could sail the universe, collecting the stars and constellations is infuriating.
"me too. that awful guy is lucky hyune pulled me off of him before i could really get to punching. i think i was gonna kill that guy." he stares at you, holding your hand a little tighter. "nobody even tries to lay a hand on you without suffering the consequences."
and like a delicate string of spider's silk, you snap just as easily as the webbed solution is made.
"if you keep playing with my feelings like this, innie, i think i'm actually going to sob." you say quietly. he tilts his head at you imploringly. "where do we stand as best friends? because now you'd literally fucking kill someone for me and i've been in love with you since the 7th grade. it's completely irrational and i'm so fucking tired of having to hide it. you and your stupid smile, your stupid affection, and- ugh! look at me. i'm a total mess, just stumbling over my words the second i see you. no amount of words, whether they are found in the dictionary or the bible can possibly equate to this overwhelming tsunami of emotions i feel when i see your fucking handsome face."
his jaw is absolutely dropped, and blood rushes to your head.
oh shit. i just fucked up our whole friendship.
and then one large hand reaches around to the back of your neck to pull you into the most intensely passionate kiss you've ever experienced. the emotion pulsing through his cracked lips will bruise yours, you think. you wrap your arms around his neck as the kiss deepens.
when he finally pulls away, he blinks at you, breaking out into a grin. "i'm not good with my words, either. however, i feel like actions are much more direct." he climbs under the covers, hugging you tightly around your waist. you rest your head on his shoulder, and your head fits perfectly, like the crook of his neck was architecturally designed for your skull. he leans in closer to whisper softly into your ear.
"i win, by the way. i've been in love with you since we were eight."
the intricate string of spider's silk that held the two of you together grows, shades of deep burgundy and crimson staining it the color of passion and love. maybe it was the invisible string of fate all along.
...
jeongin sits at the kitchen counter, taking in the peeling paint upon the walls. this is a house that has been loved dearly. from the kitchen's hub wafts the smell of warm, freshly baked bread. he sighs as the familiar scent brings him to ease. your mother walks out of the kitchen, the sourdough bread sliced gently into bite-sized pieces. she is not the lady she used to be, as her hair now sports strands the colors of rare metal and she has wrinkles from her warm, inviting smile. however, she is just as beautiful as jeongin remembers her to be. you clearly get some of your out-of-this-world-beauty from your mother. the rest comes from aphrodite's endless blessings towards you.
"it's been so long, dear." she murmurs, spreading butter onto a piece of bread. "congratulations on your relationship with my little yn. it'll be one year next week, already?"
"although, if i'm being honest...your mother and i always knew you two had a bond that went far beyond friendship. we placed bets on when someone would man up and confess. i was closer." she laughs softly. "so, what do you need? a good meal? advice? ...or is it something about yn?"
he nods at her guess.
"it is. mother," he begins, and your mother gets all flustered when he refers to her so tenderly. "i would like to ask for your blessing, so that i may marry yn. i don't think it's possible for me to wait any longer."
she gasps loudly, taking his hands in her gnarled ones and cheering. it's almost as if she's the one possibly getting proposed to.
"i would love nothing more for you to be an official part of the family, jeongin. however, you must promise me this. you will wake up everyday with nothing but devout love for yn, and go to sleep with that love or more. marriage is a lifelong commitment. if anything happens, communicate."
"i will, mother. i swear on my life."
a person's character is built on external influences. how they are raised, who they associate themselves with, etc. determines how they act. in terms of romance, your previous partners shape you as you learn from your successes and mistakes. this wasn't true for you, having been in only one relationship.
but you have a best friend of thirteen years that you can rely on to build you into the person you desire to be.
the sun is shining at the peak of summer vacation. the bright warm of golden daylight is enough to scare away any threats of bad weather as you sit in your garden. you check your watch again, waiting and waiting and waiting.
like clockwork, jeongin enters from the back door of your quaint home, his arms leisurely wrapping around your waist as he pulls you in for a loving kiss.
"i missed you." he says softly, pressing a soft peck to your nose. his hands find their way to yours, his soft skin brushing against the platinum wedding ring on your finger. your promise ring, matching the one he always wears, is nestled comfortably next to it.
and behind you, growing daintily in the garden is the fresh sprout of a young willow tree, ready to grow big and tall, forever sheltering you in its emerald embrace.

A Quick Nora Thought...
Tumblr media
Nora's first appearance in the series sets up her arc in two ways:
Nora: I can't believe we've been at Beacon for a full twenty-four hours! Not that I thought we'd get kicked out or anything, I mean, you're the perfect student and I'm… well, I'm me! But it's just crazy, you know? We've been friends for soooooooo long! What are the odds we'd still be together? Well, not "together-together…" Not that I'm not saying that you're not handsome; you are handsome, but that'd just be weird, right?
Let's focus on 2 lines:
Not "together-togheter"...
I'm... well, I'm me!
Not together-together
Nora is initially co-dependent from Ren. She is saved by him and spends the majority of her life by his side. As a result, she struggles to find a new balance, when her feelings become romantic. They are together platonically, but not romantically. At the same time, Nora's idea of getting together-together as things are is unhealthy.
I'm... well, I'm me!
Let's consider these 2 scenes:
We've got a world-renowned fighter on our team, what's basically a ninja, I can bench five of me… Jaune… We've trained all year, our weapons are awesome, Glynda barely yells at us anymore and… Uhh… Jaune!
Nora: Yeah, they’ll be fine. Jaune’s a great leader, Oscar’s grown a ton, and Yang is more than capable of protecting them all in a fight. Oh, and of course Ren is- um…
Whenever Nora can't properly say who someone is, she would define them by their name. In volume 3, Jaune is still unsure of his identity, so he is no-one, but Jaune. In volume 8, Ren is going through a similar identity crisis, so Ren is someone Nora doesn't know anymore. This speech pattern highlights that the character mentioned has a frail sense of self. Well, what does it say about Nora, then? The very first thing she says is that she is unsure of who she is. Ren is someone, for example a handsome perfect student. But Nora? Who is she?
Ren + Nora = Renora
Nora's arc is built around 2 ideas, which seem opposites. On the one hand her story focuses on her relationship with Ren, as he is her objective since early on. On the other hand she must figure out who she is as an individual. So, how can she be together-together with Ren and be just Nora at the same time?
Nora: I don’t know what he is. Every time I think the two of us are making progress, he… (sighs) We’ve been together our whole lives but I feel like I understand him less now than ever. And I don’t know if that’s his fault or mine. Blake: When you’ve been at someone’s side for so long, after a while they become a part of you. But that’s just it, they’re only a part of you. Don’t forget about the rest. Nora: I don’t actually know who I am… without Ren. Pretty sad, huh? Weiss: Well, maybe take this opportunity to find out? Do something only Nora can do.
The two thematic threads come together in volume 8. Nora doesn't know who Ren is and since she has built her self-image around him, she is suddenly unsure of herself as well. It turns out that to go from Ren + Nora to Renora, our girl needs to figure herself out:
Nora: When my mom ran from the Grimm and left me behind, you found me. We became Ren and Nora. But I realized on this mission apart, I don’t know who “Just Nora” is. And if I’m ever going to find out, then I have to do it alone. Because I’ve always loved you, Lie Ren, and that pretty head on your shoulders seems like it’s doing a lot better. But I still got to get mine sorted out before I can be the partner you need. Is that…okay?
Only in this way, she can be by Ren's side (together), but not in aa codependent way (together-together).
As for who Nora is... the episode Risk makes it pretty clear.
The most beautiful flower of all
Tumblr media
What beautiful blossoms we have this year, but look... This one's late...But I'll bet that when it blooms it will be the most beautiful of all. (Mulan, 1998)
The Renora's confession scene ends with Nora being not ready for a relationship with Ren. And yet, the moment looks at Nora he sees the air full of petals ready to bloom. Considering Ren's Mulan's allusion and the importance flowers have in Renora's arcs, I think the reference is pretty clear.
Nora (a pink flower) has yet to bloom. She is late in a sense. However, the flower which blooms late is the most beautiful of all. That is Nora. Our girl will definately bloom into herself, no matter the adversity she meets:
The flower that blooms in adversity is the most rare and beautiful of all (Mulan, 1998)

But first: everyone kinda teasing Blake by making it a game, let’s find more and more, harder things for Yang to crush with her thighs!
Blake gets more flustered and jealous each passing thing
I can see this being hilarious and dangerous. I love it.
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
Sun: Hey, Yang! (Rummages in a bag and pulls out a fresh pineapple the size of his head with the green top cut to look like cat ears) Ten lien says you can't crack this in half with your thighs.
Yang: You're on, Monkey Man! (Places the pineapple between her thighs and breaks it no sweat, sending juices splattering everywhere and hitting her chin) Pay up!
Blake: (from a distance) By the gods...
-The Next Day-
Weiss: Yang, can you help me break open this pumpkin? (Holds up an absolutely monstrous gourd in two hands) I'd be willing to pay you a few lien if you can do it without your hands since everyone thinks you're a hot shot.
Yang: Oh, yeah! No problem! (Sits on the floor of the kitchen in her gym shorts, struggles to place the pumpkin between her thighs, and grunts and growls as she demolishes it) There you go!
Blake: (standing in the doorway, swallows hard as she stares at a seed plastered to Yang’s lower lip) Oh, come on.....
-One Week Later-
Ruby: Yang! Yang! Yang! (Holds up a bushel of apples) Bet you twenty lien that you can't crack twenty of these behind your knee in under three minutes!
Yang: (rips off her pants and stands proudly in her boxer briefs) Better start counting my lien now, little sister!
Ruby: (pulls out a stopwatch) In three... two... one... GO!!!
Yang: (Starts a rhythm of placing apples between the back of her thigh and calf every other leg and pops each one so fast that it sounds like Coco's Gatlin Gun going off)
Ruby: And that's twenty destroyed in one and a half minutes!
Yang: Hell yeah!
Blake: (watching with a beet red face from the kitchen window and biting her fist as a piece of apple slowly slides down Yang's calves)
Kali: I'm thinking apple pie would be a good dessert for tonight. Don't you?
Blake: MOM!!!!
-The Next Day-
Yang & Blake: (sitting and talking/flirting on the porch)
Kali: (walks up to Yang with a coconut the size of her head) Yang, dear, can I ask you a favor?
Blake: (notices the coconut) Dear gods, no.
Yang: Oh! Uh, sure thing, Mrs. Belladonna. What can I do?
Kali: Yang, dear, I've told you before. Call me Kali. (Holds up the coconut) I don't have the muscle I used to, so breaking one of these open for dinner tonight is a difficult task. Do you mind breaking it open for me?
Yang: Absolutely! (Holds hand up) Hand it over.
Kali: (pulls the coconut away a little) Actually, I was wondering if you could do it with your legs. Ghira and I have a bit of a wager going.
Sun: Same here!
Weiss & Winter: As do we.
Ruby: (holding up yellow flags that say Yang in black) Go, Sis! Go!
Emerald: (holding a money tray filled with cash in the distance) Place your bets! Can blonde crack open the coconut with her bare thighs? What's going to give first? The coconut? Yang’s thighs? Or Blake’s horny?
Blake: (mortified but can't pry her eyes away from the coconut)
Yang: Alright (to Emerald) But I want a cut of all that! I'm doing all the work! (Grabs the coconut, places it between her thighs, and with a roar of effort, cracks the coconut into half a dozen pieces. Coconut water spills all over her lap and splashes up her chest, neck, and face) Ha! Pay up!
Blake: (so red in the face she's nearly purple as her ears flick back and forth wildly) That's it! (Grabs Yang by the collar and drags her away) No one bother us for the next hour!
Yang: (confused and struggling to find her footing) Blake! Blake! What's wrong? What did I do????
Blake: I'm going to wear your thighs as earrings for the next twenty minutes, and then you're going to snap me in half.

It's kind of depressing when you realize out of Team RWBY, Weiss is the only one who get's constant development. Ruby doesn't get any character development until maybe Vol 4, and it was still sporadic at best. Yang and Blake got some good development up until Vol 7 where it feels like if it didn't involve Bumblee, then they didn't get anything (And in some cases you could argue going backwards...). So, this might be my bias talking (Weiss is best girl), but Weiss is the only one on that team to me that got anything in a constant enough rate. Only time I think she didn't develop was in Vol 9, but that was Ruby's time to shine so I'm not really upset with that one.
Yeah, when you think about it, there really wasn't much character development for any of the supposed "main characters" of the series, especially since they're also the titular characters.
Ruby's character development was like a David Cage game of Beyond: Two Souls, showing us Ruby's highs, lows, lows, lows, and LOWS of her character development, all before circling back to a HIGH just in time for her series to get canned. It's a sad sight.
Blake's character was centralized on the White Fang. She was in the White Fang until she left, then she finds out the White Fang are up to something in Vale to the point that it exhausts her, then she helps stop the White Fang in Vale and Mountain Glenn, then Yang was framed, and Blake thinks she's becoming Adam again, then the White Fang attack Beacon and Adam cripples Yang so she runs away to Menagerie to protect Yang and everyone she knows and learns the White Fang are up to something in Menagerie until she breaks everything up in Haven. Things go right for Blake overall until Adam shows back up and she and Yang murder him with no consequences. It is from this point that Blake's character arc with the White Fang ends and her entire character now becomes Yang's girlfriend. I've said it before and I'll say it again; Blake is the worst girl of Team RWBY.
Yang's character trait is that she has no character trait. None that's ever properly established. She's Ruby's sister and/or mother figure, but hardly interacts with her. She likes to party and get into fights, but we don't see her do either. Her mom is a bandit, but we don't know if Raven really loves Yang or not. She lost her arm to Adam, but she didn't really learn anything from that whole experience; again, nothing that we can see. And now Yang's character is Blake's girlfriend. I put Yang higher than Blake only because what story COULD be told isn't just the same story over and over.
So, now that I've gone over some issues of the others, let's talk about Weiss' character arc. Weiss is physically scarred by a trial set by her father in order to get into Beacon, and once she arrives, she's an uptight spoiled brat who expects to be handed the position of Team Leader. After she's humbled by Professor Port, she steps up as Ruby's second-in-command. She's pursued romantically by Jaune, whom she rejects outright multiple times until Neptune shows up, whom she romantically pursues until he starts flirting with other girls in front of her, though Jaune helps Neptune ask her to dance, and from there she and Jaune are on better terms as friends (which can be seen in V3 when he calls Weiss after getting out of the locker Pyrrha shoved him in). During V3, she's approached by her sister and financially cut off by her father. After the Fall of Beacon, she's forced to return home and is basically put in a sort of Brittney Spears house arrest, where she's only allowed out by her father to do whatever he wants her to do (I think that's what happened, I'm not really aware of what exactly happened during the whole "conservative house-arrest" thing from a few years back), until she escapes and is then captured by Raven until she's rescued by Yang. They then go to Haven and reunite with Ruby and Team JNR, and once Blake comes back, Team RWBY is back in full swing!
Okay, I think that's enough to make the point, but I do want to bring up something that is going to piss people off, because of course it will. It's about Weiss' likely endgame ship, White Knight. I said before that RWBY doesn't know how to do romance, but... Looking at the character developments of both Jaune and Weiss and they just somehow start leaning closer and closer, contrary to how they started out. Like, I know I'm not the only one seeing two characters with full-developed characters starting to get closer, so how is it that BMBLB sucks so hard with their story if it's the canon flagship?
Don't believe me? Think about what I was talking about with these characters. Do you know what the biggest difference is between the stories of Weiss and Blake and Yang? The answer is that Weiss actually has a story. Blake and Yang just are just... two halves of one whole. Weiss is completely independent of Jaune, and yet they both managed to grow without each other. I'm no relationship expert, but if you're relying on another person to have a character arc, that's not a healthy relationship- That's codependency.
Oh, but what do I know? I'm just an idiot on the internet who makes incorrect quote posts. My opinion is invalid and should be tossed out and disregarded. Tata~!

A sunny dragon comes to town~
Yang: Jaune, my man!
Yang grabs Jaune into a headlock, much to Jaune's dismay.
Jaune: Hello, Yang how was your trip?
Yang: Not bad. Mom teleported me roughly past Mt. Glenn, the drive to Vale was nice on Bumblebee.
Yang let go of Jaune before looking around.
Yang: Annnd, where is the miniscule mute?
A muffin hit Yang on the head.
Yang: Ah, there you are, shrimps!
Yang said, walking over to the sitting Neo, who was trying to act like she was doing something important, but Yang just picked her up and gave her a big hug before bonking Neo on the head.
Neo: Ow! What the fuck you big boobed bitch!
Yang: That's for tossing a muffin at me.
Neo: Next time, it will be a pie with knives in it!
Yang: Clown tactics, now we just need you to play the part.
Neo just gave her the finger before giving a smirk and hugging Yang.
Yang: Funny, I also thought Jaune would have knocked you up by now.
This caused Jaune to blush and sputter, while Neo blushed as well before shattering away in embarrassment.
Roman: Ah, is that the wonderful sound of a soul being embarrassed I hear?
Yang: Rome!
Yang ran up to the man and embraced him in a hug.
Roman: Jeeez what kind of training has your mother been putting you through?
Yang: Ah, you know tribal stuff. She also said for me to tell you that she expects a visit from you, to chat and catch up as she puts it.
Roman: Once this little heist of ours is complete, that will be the first thing I do.
Yang: Right, so infiltrating Beacon, huh?
Roman: It's ingenious! Plus, I knew your mom would love it if we could stick it to Ozpin again.
Yang: You said you got everyone fake transcripts right?
Roman: Everyone excluding you, I figured a bit of 'legitimacy' would do us well, sides you were going to attend Beacon anyways right?
Yang: Yeah, that was the plan, even though mom is totally against it.
Roman: I don't blame her, but if things go perfect, we'll steal whatever it is he's hiding, gloat before selling it too, whoever is willing to meet our price!
Yang: It sounds good in practice, Rome...
Roman: Have faith! With Neo, Jaune, and You, this plan will be foolproof!
Jaune had already excused himself to let the two catch up as he went to find Neo. He caught her back in her room as she was looking at an old photo.
It was Him, her, Roman, and Yang with another Woman, she looked like a carbon copy of Yang but had black hair and red eyes.
It read: 'Thick as thieves'.
Jaune: Penny for you thoughts?
Neo: Just a penny?
Jaune walked up behind her before giving her a hug, Neo leaned in and enjoyed the warmth.
Jaune: C'mon spill it...
Neo: Just...nervous.
Jaune: You? The Neopolitan, nervous...I thought such a word didn't exist in your vocabulary.
Neo: kiss ass.
Jaune: Heh.
Jaune sighed as he rested his head onto of her head.
Jaune: I'm nervous too, a lot that can go wrong... but I will do my best to ensure that you and Roman will be okay.
Neo: Hey, don't sell yourself short. Without you, our trio ain't nothing, we need you...I need you dummy.
Jaune: Awww, Neo all sentimental, I need a camera.
Neo smirked before suddenly Jaune was sprawled out on the bed with Neo strattling him, a hazy look in her eyes.
Jaune:Heh, I'm in danger.

ok ok - so you've mentioned Oscar's absence is just starkly obvious in Ever After. How so? Or more specific, how much different do you think things would have been if he was there? Especially in light of....... that recent event.
Thank you so much for your patience @skynapple! I knew this would be a long answer so it took me a bit to gather everything.
I think I've mentioned it in different ways across a few posts by now, but I'll try and summarize it all here!!
How Oscar's Absence Has Been Emphasized Throughout V9 (Specifically Through Ruby's Attachment to Him)
The first thing that clues us into this is actually how v8 is set up. When the teams are split, they're split by pairings. Or at the very least, foils (I will be referring to ship names just for conveniences sake).
Yang vs. Blake Ren vs. Nora Jaune vs. Weiss Oscar vs. Ruby
And we have multiple examples of who is supposed to foil who by the orders they're standing in the opening specifically. Which, as we all know, is full of symbolism and foreshadowing for the volume as a whole.
Example 1: We have the Bees at the center followed by Renora, Whiteknight, and Rosegarden left to right on either side of them.
Tumblr media
Example 2: We have Ruby and Yang set as foils here with where they're positioned in proximity to the camera as the 'leaders' of each group. But if you look at them in a lineup order again from the outside in, it starts with Renora followed by RG, then WK and BB are flipped.
Tumblr media
Example 3: Technically these are the first shots focused on division in the entire opening... and it's literally who mirrors who. Bees at the far left and right. Renora the next ones in. Then Whiteknight. And Rosegarden again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Beyond the symbolism in the opening, this is reinforced by what happens over the course of the volume.
The divide that starts in the first episode is brought on by a disagreement between Ruby and Yang... but where Ruby worries about Yang, Yang worries more about Blake than her sister.
Yang: Do you... think she thinks less of me? For not helping out with Amity? (she asks while looking at a piece of purple machinery) Jaune: Ruby is your sister, she's always going to love you. Even if you disagree with each other. Yang: Yeah... Ruby...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And Blake, by extension, is worrying about Yang.
Tumblr media
Ruby: I hope everyone is doing alright...* Blake: If you're worried about Yang, you could always try calling her? *flashback to when Ruby said "I'm just glad you're alright." when she found Oscar in the crater only to be separated from him again.
Ren and Nora's arcs and clash of ideals are clearly in focus as well, especially after their 'confession' in Risk.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nora: I don't actually know who I am... without Ren... - Nora: When my mom ran from the grimm and left me behind... you found me. We became "Ren and Nora". But I realized on this mission apart... I don't know who just "Nora" is.
Jaune and Weiss is more subtle because they don't have as much character focus that volume, but they are the last two people left standing after Cinder's attack and were the only two present when Penny died. We instead see how that relationship is focused on throughout v9 in light of that shared experience.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
That focus is exactly what happens with Ruby and Oscar's relationship as well, not just in spite of Oscar's absence, but because of it.
All the pairings I just mentioned? They all finished Volume 8 'reunited'. Or I guess a better description would be 'in the same place'.
Yang and Blake in the Ever After. Jaune and Weiss too. Ren and Nora back in Vacuo.
But Ruby and Oscar? They were the only two established foils that were split up in v8 that didn't get an actual reunion. And that's shown plain and clear in Ultimatum where we see everyone come back together only for RG's hug to be focused on and then interrupted. Foreshadowing to say they weren't quite there yet and to build up to a bigger reunion later on.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Part of the reason why I say his absence is so strongly felt is because RG is a ship built on absences. I am once again going to talk about other volumes first, I PROMISE i will get to v9 in a second, please bare with me ahaha.
In the v5 finale, we have focus on Oscar's reaction over everyone else when Ruby is knocked out of commission.
Tumblr media
In v6, we have focus on Ruby when Oscar disappears and a focus on the two of them again when he returns in the following episode. (Not pictured in this gif is Ruby's eyes shaking in fear when she's told Oscar is missing, Ruby gasping when he opens the door, Ruby laughing when they tackle him to the floor, and Ruby helping him up afterwards).
Tumblr media
In v7, it's established from episode 2 that they're having conflict which is elaborated on further in the following episode and further still by them being apart and in disagreement for the following few episodes. Until they both come to trust each other again during The Fumble in episode 9.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And I already spoke about the divide in v8.
But then v9? Where literally the first thing Ruby sees at the beginning of the volume is an illusion of Oscar? Not Yang first. Not Penny first. But Oscar?? And that illusion is one of him beaten and covered in bruises to really hurt Ruby more?
Tumblr media
The scene where Neo flips between those people establishes three things that all get explored throughout the rest of the season.
Ruby's grief over Penny
Ruby's conflict and connection with her sister
Ruby's attachment to Oscar
The focus on her grief with Penny ties back into the Dojo Scene in volume 5. Where Oscar was the first and only person she actually talked to about that grief.
Tumblr media
Ruby: When Beacon fell, I lost two of my friends. Penny Polendina and Pyrrha Nikos.
The focus on her connection to Yang in this volume, one where her sister finally enters a relationship with Blake, leaves Ruby feeling left behind by one of the few people she thought she had left. Even if it is irrational and not an actual loss, that distance feels stronger to Ruby here because she's already grieving so many other losses she hasn't processed yet.
Tumblr media
I've gone over the above scene before, but part of what clues us into her thinking of Oscar, or at least the emphasis on his absence, is the symbolism used. Throughout the volumes, Oscar has been associated very strongly with sunlight, fire, and warmth that drives away the cold of Ruby's grief. This is most specifically and consistently shown with him being framed by lamps and lanterns.
Tumblr media
So when she is placed in a room with her team, furthest from the fire (warmth), next to a lantern, across from an empty chair with a green/teal cloth on it? It's pretty easy to assume who she's thinking about. Weiss could have sat there. Or Jaune. But neither did. Because they wanted us to see how alone Ruby felt.
Tumblr media
And then the focus on her attachment to Oscar with his death being the last illusion Neo uses against her. The illusion that breaks her to the point of reaching for the tea the first time and would have been the final straw had the Curious Cat not interrupted them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not only does this volume highlight what Oscar's absence in the Ever After does to Ruby... It also focuses on what the meaning of losing him in general would do to her. Because Oscar, above all else, is a symbol of exactly what motivates her to keep fighting.
In her letter in v4, she starts to tell Yang that they have to keep fighting for the people they've already lost... but then she hesitates. Crosses it out. Corrects that who they actually need to fight for is the people they haven't lost yet.
And Neo's personally tailored torture chamber starts by haunting Ruby with the memory of all those she has lost, or those whose deaths she feels responsible for...
Tumblr media
...only to deal the finishing blow by telling her that if she keeps down the path she's headed, she will lose those she still has left. And she drives that point home with Oscar. Once again, not her sister Yang, not her friend Penny, not her team partner Weiss, not her Uncle Qrow, or any of their other friends.
Neo. Uses. Oscar.
Tumblr media
Because he is who Ruby is closest to. And his loss is the one that would hit her the hardest.
As for the second portion of your question (I promise this section will be shorter) of how the volume might have been different had Oscar been around it's... really hard to say.
I truly believe his absence made this volume possible given how they structured it, and I really don't think it would have worked in the ways they needed it to had he been there.
That being said, I am down to speculate.
Oscar's always been very tuned into how Ruby is feeling or noticing when she's struggling and jumping to help when he can. There's a possibility he would have tried to do so had he been there. He may have had an approach like "No, enough of the moving forward nonsense, you are not okay and we are going to address that before we keep going". If he had and it had worked, then much of the conflict of that volume just wouldn't have happened, would have been postponed, or would have been resolved without Ruby ascending, which she needed to do in order to move the plot forward.
At the very least, Oscar would have snapped at both Weiss and Jaune for talking to Ruby the ways they had been before that boiled over. But I don't know that he would have actually been able to help with what little time they had... as well as some other factors.
Ruby was at a very low point, Yang was trying to get her to open up and Ruby wouldn't. Weiss and Blake also tried to offer support or reassurances but fell short.
One of the interactions with WBY that happens after Ruby snaps and storms off clues us into this:
Yang: Dammit! How could she just run off like that? Blake: She was clearly upset. Yang: That wasn't upset, that was... UGH! She could have just talked to us. Weiss: Maybe she didn't feel like she could.
I feel like this is a double edged sword. On one hand, with Oscar's absence being focused on, it implies that maybe Ruby didn't feel like she could talk to her team... but she might have been able to talk to Oscar because we know she felt safe enough to do that before. Both the dojo scene, and the fumble are great examples of this.
Tumblr media
But there reaches a certain point for everyone struggling with mental health where community support doesn't cut it. Ruby may have been at too low of a point to even talk to him of all people. And Oscar trying to force her to open up when she didn't have it in her could have very well done more harm than good.
One other thing that's said in the volume after Ruby has begun ascending is this:
Weiss: We've done everything we can. Now it's up to Ruby.
I think Weiss of all people did more harm to Ruby's mental state than any good, but I digress.
The point of this line is that friends and family can offer support as best they can, but sometimes you have to fight your own battles. This was a journey Ruby had to do alone. Which as a side note, is a very nice parallel to Nora's current arc.
I think with enough time and support, that maybe Ruby would have been able to avoid locking it all away until she burst... But stories are driven by conflict and their subsequent resolution. Ruby's breakdown needed to happen one way or another and was a long time coming.
And I think they way they used Oscar - and specifically, his absence - to contribute to that breaking point was executed brilliantly.
Even if it hurt like hell 😭

Hey, can we talk about how Weiss is the luckiest Member of RWBYJNPR?
Just real Quick?
Like no one should compare traumas, it's not a competition. But. like.
Weiss has suffered the least of them all? But was somehow also the worst of them in the beginning?
Because She had
Abusive father
absent, alcoholic mother
threat of being attacked because of her name
Has a scar over one eye, doesn't show signs of impairment
And then she got better as a person and personally suffered
Forced 'home' by evil father
getting kidnapped
getting stabbed with a spear
...
Home literally falls into the water
Watched her team fall into the void.
Ever After shenaningans?
That's it.
That's all her own personal suffering, and for a lot of that she had friends and family, like Klein or Winter, or RWBY! She even left WHitley alone when she was young, clinging to winter!
Compared to;
Ruby
Mom presumed dead
Dad was depressed
uncle was alcoholic
Raised mostly by sister
entered into a combat school early (This one IS negative for her)
Jumped into and active cannon
hunted for her eyes
watched a friend die in front of her. Like. Four times, even if one was a mouse and the other was an illusion
Watched Yang Take a hit and Fall into the coid, assumed she was dead.
a friend that came back to life died to another friend
feels the weight of the world is on her shoulders
LITERALLY ATTEMPTED SUICIDE
Yang
abandoned by mother
step mom presumed dead
father was horribly depressed
uncle was an alcolholic
had to raise sister
lost arm
abandoned by partner and sister.
Had to kill to survive
Self sacrificial tendencies.
Watched Sister she had raised attempt to Commit suicide
so yeah she's got abandonment issues
Blake
Is a minority, suffers from peoples racism.
Abusive, genocidal ex-boyfriend
Said Ex attempted to murder her and Yang, forcing them to kill him instead.
More Racism
Watched the woman she loved sacrifice herself.
AND JNPR
Jaune
His parents actively kept him from pursuing his dream
Criminally negligent, literally didn't know the basics of Hunting
Given Terrible romantic advice by dad
bullied, blackmailed, beat down on.
constantly belittled and denied by his crush (I don't blame weiss for saying no, but it still hurt him)
First person to believe in him Kissed him, Didn't believe in him, ran off to her death.
Suffered severe imposter syndrome and survivors guilt, along with depression and suicidal thoughts
never felt good enough
Nearly got Weiss killed because of Cinder
Took anger out on oscar, Regretted it
Nearly got his team killed because they agreed with his plan to steal an airship
Neo beat up his team! Stole the Relic of Knowledge!
Watched so many of his Friends fall into the Void
had to assist in a Friend's suicide
Family Sword (And therefore legacy) Broke
LEFT BEHIND BY WINTER, WHO COULD HAVE VERY EASILY SAVED HIM.
Lost in a Goddamn fairytale world for a decade or two, alone. on a beach. ALONE.
Drank poison because that's what the story said to do. Couldn't even fucking die right.
The Paper pleasers. Just everything with the paper pleasers
His friends, once reunited with him, thought he had gone insane (He kinda had lost it, but really who wouldn't have?) and They didn't believe him. That hurt.
Pyrrha and Penny Illusion by NeoCat
Damn Jaune really is the Spider-man of RWBY, isn't he. His story is fucking sorrowful.
Pyrrha
Put on a pedestal above her Peers, very lonely
Object of affection focused on someone else
Given a nonchoice to protect people.
Fucking Died. Has remained dead. haunts the narrative.
Ren
parents died
lived on the road most of his life
His power is literally emotional repression
only had Nora
Lost his new family in the Void.
Nora
presumably never had a dad
abandoned by Mother
Lived on the road
only had Ren
That Shock-Force-Field thing in Atlas, left with permanent scarring.
Family Fell into the Void.
So, like. Can Weiss spread the wealth a little bit? In terms of luck?
The rest of them could probably really use it.
OF COURSE
None of this is to say Weiss Hasn't Suffered, she really has suffered in her own ways.
But like.
Not as much as any one other individual in her group.

Growing Up
Scroll rings
Yang:Thank you for calling Domino’s. Is this pickup or delivery?
Ruby:Wow, it’s a week since Kovu left for school and you’ve already gone crazy.
Yang:I miss my little man so much! Dad never told us how much it sucked when we left for Beacon!
Ruby:Bet he’s laughing now. Welcome to club sis. You could always make another one?
Yang:*shivers* I don’t know about all that. Honestly I don’t understand how- ummm
Ruby:How I kept going after one? Heh, well… it took awhile.
Yang:…Sorry. I didn’t mean-
Ruby:I know, and I’m flattered. Also thankful. Carmine may not have been here if I didn’t see you and Blake’s adorable little guy.
Yang:Thanks, but you would’ve found the resolve. Always do. Garnet is even more proof. How is the little hell raiser?
Ruby:At the park with papa. Has Kovu called you about Carmine yet?
Yang:Pfft, no. I’m positive he doesn’t know she’s there, and I’ve been told not to tell him.
Ruby:She called you!?
Yang:Yeah. She was practically begging. Not that she needed to.
Ruby:Hmm….
Yang:….Hasn’t called you in awhile?
Ruby:Not as often as I’d like…I don’t know. It’s complicated. We’re complicated.
Yang:If she’s anything like her mom, which she is, I’m certain Carmine just doesn’t know how to talk to you these days. Let her be for now.
Ruby:I think the one she got from me is using work to ignore figuring stuff out. Can’t think about family drama if you’re busy shooting a Nevermore, hehe sigh… You know what’s weird? I can’t imagine how mom would feel in these situations. She never got see us start living our lives.
Yang:I’m sure she would’ve been a little conflicted like anybody else.
Ruby:On one hand, I want my girl to comeback not just to spend time together, but because I know the world can be dangerous. There’s moments I want to guide her through personally; even if they aren’t the ones she wants to know. On the other hand…I’m highly aware the world is better because of what she’s doing.
Yang:Gee, kinda sounds like when you ran off ahead of everyone all those years ago.
Ruby:That was…kinda different.
Yang:…….
Ruby:Okay, maybe not so different.
Yang:Eventually Carmine is going to learn to either slow down for others to catch up, or go back for them. In this case, I’m leaning towards her coming to you.
Ruby:You sound so certain.
Yang:Of course! Despite the ups and downs, it’s so clear your daughter doesn’t just love you with every bone in her body. Ruby, she’s your biggest fan; the hero she adores shamelessly. That’s tough feelings for a kid, especially when it’s mixed with family. It’s not exactly the same but didn’t you have days you wished mom was around as you improved? Imagine all the things you wanted her to say or do with you as both a parent and a mentor.
Ruby:I could write a book about it. *slouches* Daughters are rough. Don’t know how dad and uncle Qrow managed with us.
Yang:We were awesome and incredibly well behaved!
Ruby:….
Yang:Yeah I didn’t believe it either. Anyways I gotta go. Don’t stress out Rubes. Our kids are growing up. We unfortunately have to trust the process. No matter how much it hurts.
Ruby:Imagine Kovu comes back home with a girlfriend?
Blake, in the distance: WHY WOULD YOU SAY THAT!?
Yang:Blake, you met everyone you love there. Including me!
Blake:Still against it.
Yang:What!?
Ruby:*hangs up*
Front Door opens
Ruby:How was the park you two? *turns around*
Carmine:…..
Ruby:…..
Carmine:*walks to stairs*
Ruby:Wait! Hold o- you’re here! In the house!
Carmine:Yes, those are all facts you just said.
Ruby:Did you…hear-
Carmine:Nope. Everything you said on the phone is a mystery. *walks up stairs* …..I’ll help make dinner tonight
Ruby:Heh, okay! Sounds like a plan!
…….
Carmine:*peeks from corner* It’s good to see you by the way. I…missed you. *leaves*
Ruby:(Yeah, definitely my kid.)
