Why did Rin name them "Towa and Setsuna"? - The meaning behind their names

I received a question about their names. The meaning behind Moroha's name will be in another post. Since these were things we previously covered I'll have the master post on Towa and Setsuna's name here -

In Yashahime Episode 15 Rin says "Towa and Setsuna" to their names. In Japanese - Towa and Setsuna mean One Moment and an Eternity. It's also said in each episode. "Towa and Setsuna, between us half-demon twins, two worlds exist at the same time; Human and Demon, Feudal Era and Present Day, Peace and War, Joy and Sorrow, Dreams and Reality, Now and Forever, and finally Love and Hate. A Feudal fairytale, Yashahime. We'll keep moving forward, overcoming the hurdles of destiny."

Katsuyuki: — What is the origin behind the names “Setsuna” and “Towa”?

Setsuna means “moment” while Towa means “eternity”. - Hence, a pair.

Katsuyuki-san said that "Setsuna is a black Sesshoumaru" and Towa is "White Sesshoumaru" they are Yin and Yang.

Never forget when Sunrise said they would release a Season 2 guidebook with the promotional text that it would “look back on Inuyasha and The Final Act to explore how the parental generations met and fell in love”. 

You know, when Rin was a 7-8 year old child? 

I remember thinking that “what, are they gonna retcon OG Rin to having been a teenager in Inuyasha now?” since retconning shit or just bs-ing the OG lore is what Sunrise does.

But nope, the guidebook came out and it shows Rin with Sesshomaru just like she were in Inuyasha, a 7-8 year old child. 

By Sunrise’s own mouth (or whoever they hired to promote the guidebook with their permission), Sesshomaru fell for Rin when she was 7. 

And considering Yashahime never gave any other explanation or flashback as to how they happened, it basically confirms the OG anime really is meant to be seen as sessrin’s “backstory”. 

So, anyone still trying to say sessrin isn’t pedophilia at this point? 🤡🤡🤡 I'm all ears.

Narita Ken's commentary on SR in HNY

I found another JPN source for Narita Ken's (Sesshomaru's VA) commentary on HNY and SauceRib from the latest official guidebook. Looks like it's really legit and really fucking hilarious

Murky TL here, but apparently in HNY, Narita chose to act in a way where Sesshomaru "didn't have to clarify his (romantic) feelings to Rin (is that why it feels like he barely cares xD)

Overall, this guidebook ended up being a blessing and a curse to antis. I say we were fed well.

Regarding Narita Ken's comment in the guidebook, the translation I saw by Ayuuria seems different from what I saw on Twitter. Would you mind checking the original scan to see what he really meant? Weibo user 沉迷犬薇沼的nozo美 posted it yesterday. If you google their username, the first result is their Weibo page. Once you get into the page, scroll down to the post from Oct 27 at 07:57. The first image is a translation into Chinese, the second is the original scan.

The Twitter post was just a Japanese person's reaction and summary, and I'm assuming Ayuuria did a direct translation, so that's why they're different. I haven't seen how Ayuuria translated it, but her translations are usually fine. If you want mine to compare, it's under the cut!

When you first heard about the plan for Hanyō no Yashahime, what did you think?

When I heard from Sunrise that a show which was going to carry on the world of Inuyasha was going to begin, I was surprised. At the same time, I was curious what happened to Sesshōmaru and the other characters, and the other cast members.

Tell us your thoughts from when you first read the script.

When I learned that Sesshōmaru's children were the protagonists, I had a strong feeling of "Why?!" Probably because it really didn't connect to my image of Sesshōmaru from the time of Inuyasha. But it's an interesting new development, so I thought I'd try to challenge myself. (laughs)

(Beginning of the question was cut off.) I felt like I was playing a Sesshōmaru who had come from an alternate universe. However, thinking about how Sesshōmaru was until now, isn't that how he would treat his daughters if he became a parent? He has love, but also cruelty and cold-heartedness, so wouldn't he use his daughters as an experiment for the sake of the things he wants to know? I was dealing with various ideas like that.

Was there any aspect of your acting you were particular about?

It often doesn't go well for me when I try to plan out my acting, so I don't dare look at the materials for the upcoming story developments. I can show my ability best when I'm driven to the edge of a cliff. (laughs) Also, I was conscious that I wanted to try not to change my voice. Although I don't think I tried to copy my voice from 10 years ago either. The most important thing is to face the character.

Please tell us a story from the recording booth.

I was happy to be able to work with Chō, who plays Jaken, again after 10 years. His voice hadn't changed at all. (laughs) When I saw Kyōda-san, who plays Kaede, was so energetic, I got motivation and I felt like I also had to work harder!

What impression do you have of the protagonists, Towa, Setsuna, and Moroha?

Since Towa and Setsuna don't really resemble Rin, they probably really took after Sesshōmaru. The one whose personality is the closest to Sesshōmaru's is the cool Setsuna, right? Moroha is cute and clumsy. (laughs) She resembles Inuyasha in her recklessness.

How do you perceive Rin and Sesshōmaru's relationship?

I think if Sesshōmaru were to get married, it would probably be to her. But is that the romantic love between a man and a woman? Sesshōmaru wouldn't have seen Rin in that way. He absolutely seems like a parent. Maybe he, wondering what would happen if he acted like a human, wanted to try and use Rin for that. Like having offspring was just a biological function . . . If I were to judge just whether he likes or hates her, I'd say he likes her, but I want to think of it as somewhere in the middle, without making it clearly black or white. I want to aim for that perfect place, like when adjusting the temperature of a bath. (laughs)

Which scene from the first season left an impression on you?

The scene when Sesshōmaru gave Tenseiga to Towa. When he said "Will you try it, Towa?", it was the first time he said Towa's name, but I really wanted to have a balance of warmth and coolness, so even though they had given me the OK, they let me record it again and again.

Yashahime's new guidebook on how Inuyasha and Sesshomaru's families began is full of images and information of the history of OG Sesshomaru and Rin 🙄🙄🤦‍♀️.

None of them could understand that they are talking about a CHILD and an adult. They do not understand that there was nothing romantic in their relationship. But of course, they only ship "Adult Rin". Shippers can't make that excuse anymore, now they have a guidebook that says it all started with Rin being a child.

agdhsgdh remember when Narita Ken said that stuff about not seeing Rin as a love interest to Sesshomaru and he probably had kids like some kind of experiment? Shit was funny at the time, but you still could chalk it up to just being the voice actor’s own opinion since they don’t decide what’s going on in the show anyway, but now that Yashahime has been cancelled ended and we’ve seen how he and Rin interacts after she came out of the tree, it really seems like Narita was just telling us the truth to our faces: Sesshomaru is not in love with Rin and he really made her preggers purely as an “experiment”. Why else is their dynamic the exact same as the OG i.e authoritative adult and his submissive daughter/servant who does whatever he says and never questions him, and no kiss, let alone even a hug or hand-holding were given them through two entire seasons?? (I mean thank god they don’t kiss but you get the idea) Never mind actually giving a backstory for how they happened at all, nah why is that shit important? Sunrise really said “we gave you a Season 2 guidebook that says their romance began in the OG when Rin was 7 and uh well, remember the 10-year old drama CD where Sesshomaru courts an 11 year old Rin? Yup, that’s their backstory alright!”  I weep for the legacy of Inuyasha, I truly do. Pray tell we will be able to forget Yikeshime ever happened, at least it’s a silver lining to see all the angry Japanese reviews for it, let’s hope each and every one of them reaches Lolisawa.

Can we use the guidebook as proofs Yashahime is promoting pedophilia to kids? I think we should tell the Viz Medias.

You most definitely can if you want to, because even if Sunrise retconned Rin’s age to 11 in the anime, that’s still a literal child. Sesshomaru is still coded and written as an adult, and Sunrise is using the interactions between adult Sesshomaru and 7 or 11 year old Rin to say, “hey this was all leading up to be romantic!”

You could even use their own website where they say, “Rin grew up to be his wife,” meaning he actively groomed her from childhood.

I still see many SessKagu and SessKikyo shippers still actually believe that in the end it would be revealed that Rin is not the Mom but either these two. They still hold on the visual, powers and everything attach to the twins and circumstances in season 2.

Do you think they should just give up and form the headcanons? If this continues, then they'll be bullied and humiliated by the shippers. Because no matter what happen/connections on screen, Rin IS the mom. Sunrise doesn't care about heritage. They makes her the mom then just put every cool things other women in Inuyasha to the twins because Rin is just a regular girl.

Rin IS the mom. She is in the official guidebook and poster. These two are enough to believe that NOTHING will change in the future about the Mom regardless the family tree or the Twins called her Rin-san.

What do you think? Should they just give up with theories?

No, I don't think anyone should be made to give up on something they like doing. Some of the theories I've read are actually pretty ingenious and make so much sense, it's great to imagine what Yashahime could have been under a normal director and writer (and with much better art and animation lol). And to be fair, a lot of the theories are just attempts to inject some sense into Yashahime's garbled and illogical plot and characters. Rin may be the twins' teen mother, but there's nothing of her in the twins - their powers and colours make no sense at all as Rin's daughters, and many other callbacks and scenes leave you wondering if (as some believe) Kagura was originally meant to be the mother and got switched out halfway through the first season.

Let's not forget that according to old leaks, in the initial draft of Yashahime, Rin raised Moroha - not the twins. She wasn't their mother. This latest flower field visual is just one more detail that makes NO. EFFING. SENSE. with Rin as the mum. Anemones? Kagura's flowers? The same flowers in Setsuna's flower field, as shown in season 1? They could have used ANY flower, and they chose Kagura's? And if anyone feels like arguing that they're not Kagura's flowers, maybe ponder the fact that anemones are also known as "windflowers". There's not much room for debate, they're Kagura's flowers, end of. See, if Kagura was originally the mother, and Sunrise changed their minds midway through the season, it would at least explain why the pedoship feels shoehorned in amidst symbols and callbacks that belong to other characters. It's because it feels so forced and contrived that people are still theorising.

But I digress. As I said, I think people should be free to theorise as much as they want. Lolicon shippers have no right to bully them for it (of course we know they will, but that's what the Antilolicon community is for - banding together to push the lolicons back).

What do you think about Ken Narita saying in the SR Yashahime guidebook (lol) that he doesn’t consider Rin as Sesshomaru’s love interest, and that in his opinion Sesshomaru is her Hogosha? I just cant wrap my head around publishing something like that in the guidebook that exists specifically for their fanfic ship 😂

Good for him, I guess. I don't put too much stock in what voice actors say, since I'm not all that familiar with the anime anymore (manga-exclusive fan). But, if he really said that, he managed to have at least a LITTLE sense and dignity when most of his colleagues can't be bothered, so...

As for HOW a comment like that could have ended up in a propaganda pamphlet written specifically to justify their child grooming narrative, I haven't the foggiest notion. The Inuyasha fandom has a tendency to jump to conclusions before it has all the facts, so I don't know if I trust that's what he really said until we have scans and a trustworthy translation, frankly.

Still, if it turns out to be true, there could be a few possibilities. Whomever was doing the editing might have been asleep at the wheel. They might have thought nodding to the controversy around the pairing in the guidebook would keep both camps talking about it on social media (so far this seems to be true). I've talked before about how the entire show and all the content around it is starting to look like a troll job meant to collect attention on social media.

Or, maybe Ken Narita pissed off a higher-up at Sunrise and they're trying to set their rabid ship defenders on him. 😂🤣
