Yashahime Episode 8: The Dream Gazing Trap

Just finished watching this week’s episode of Yashahime and it seems like the best one yet! I wish I could screen shot it, but since I can’t I’ll just write about it here with this picture I took from Viz. If you don’t know this is a continuation/ reboot of Rumiko Takashi’s Inu Yasha currently being aired in Japan and on Hulu’s basic plan under simulcasts. One of the things that’s exciting for me about watching this show is getting to see it at the exact same time as Japan, in Japanese. Growing up it was sometimes painful to have to read about things in Newtype that wouldn’t be released for months or years in America. It’s one of the things that makes me grateful for the small positive progresses in tech and streaming we’ve made over the past 20 years. I’ve been disappointed by half or more of anime produced post 2008(ish) ...something about the big switch to digital, cgi, and widescreen seemed to change the fluidity of motion and I noticed a significant change in quality of backgrounds as the style moved from beautiful handprinted scenery to computer generated landscapes. Yashahime beautifully captures Takashi’s line, something that I felt was lost particularly in the final season of Inu Yasha. It’s still not the same as before the switch but I can be happy (very happy) watching the show. The animation so far has not distracted from either the story or the action. There were even two landscape scenes in this episode that impressed me - a feat I’m not sure has been accomplished yet. The first was one at 3:20 - the opening scene reminded me (I suspect intentionally) of traditional ink wash paintings. I loved the addition of the fisherman. Is there a real painting that they’re referencing here specifically? The next landscape at 13:23 was also nice - just a simple still shot that I liked and would have shared if I could. I really hope if you’re an Inu Yasha fan and you haven’t watched or heard of this yet you give it a shot. I’m a major skeptic about anything new especially when it comes to animation but this lives up to it’s predecessor and promises to be a great adventure. Plus it has a fantastic theme song!
