i feel like infodumping so here is my opinion of every new who companion!!

Rose Tyler

shes the og, shes That Girl, she is the moment! (lol, get it?) Rose was one of the best companions fr. her love story with the doctor is so beautiful and so tragic and honestly, he Needed her. ninerose >>> tenrose i said what i said. 9/10

Jack Harkness

very fun character! they kinda ruined him in torchwood a little bit. some of the earliest explicit queer rep in mainstream media i ever saw, if not the first! i loved his dynamic with rose and nine. 8/10

Mickey Smith

my sweet boy, my babygirl. he deserved so much better fr. dont get me wrong, i love Rose, but the way she treated Mickey was so mean. also the doctor hated his ass for no reason other than he was competition for Rose's affection. plastic Mickey was iconic. 8/10

Martha Jones

ICON!!! QUEEN!!!! i Love Martha soooo much. she was the only companion to Get Out and i love that for her, she deserved it. she slayed fr. however i do kinda hate that most of her character was simping for ten like. girl. stand up. 9/10

Donna Noble

Oh My God, incredible. cant wait to get her back!!!! the adipose scene through the windows???? hilarious, i can quote every word!!! she gave the doctor a run for his money and i love that for her. she was exactly what he needed after Rose and Martha, just A Mate. 10/10

Amy Pond

my favourite companion!!! eleven was My Doctor tho so thats probably why. every episode of season 5 is a banger. i love that she and Rory and River became a family to the doctor. love her. little Amelia is so cute and grown up Amy is a total badass. fish custard/10 10/10

Rory Williams

my beloved <3 hes so boyfriend fr. raised my standards as a kid. he waited 2000 years for her ;-; 10/10

River Song

hello sweetie :)

i love that her story was told backwards, very interesting narrative choice! knowing that she was always doomed to the library was so tragic. learning all of her secrets over each series was very fun and satisfying!! 10/10

Clara Oswald

hmm. not one of my favourite companions. she's ok i guess? the impossible girl thing was kinda cool but i dont really like her as a character. 5/10

Bill Potts

YESSSS! i love lesbiabs. lessbiens. women. her ending was super sad tho :(

she was cool and fun and gay 9/10

Yasmin Khan

hrm. boring. didnt have much of a personality, not really her fault the writing was just so shit. she had potential!! thasmin 4 lyfe! 4/10

Ryan Sinclair

yea. no. dont like how they made his dyspraxia a fun quirky thing that he just. magically got over somehow??? its a literal disability. my brother has it. it could have been so interesting to see how that manifested over the course of his travels with the doctor but its almost like they just. forgot about it?? also he was boring as hell. 2/10

Graham O'Brien

i literally didnt even remember his surname, i had to look it up. he was just kinda. there. a little more interesting than Ryan i guess?? but. still. 2/10

Concluding remarks

looking forward to Donna coming back and meeting the new companions!!! i hope the writing is better in this season :/ chibbers was Not It. anyway. thanks for reading my silly little ramble!! special interest go brrrr

do they forget that yasmin khan is a police officer?

during my 13 era re-watch I took note of all the moments that I think are police training related or just general police officer mentions, it's a mixed bag. this is all of them in one post along with a mini conclusion/tldr at the end check the twitter thread version of this post for screenshots with every point and alt text too

11.01, the woman who fell to earth

when we first see yaz she’s on the job, sorting out a parking dispute between two women

she tells her superior that she wants more of a challenge and he sends her to ryan

we then see her on the train where she meets the doctor. she starts out trying to take charge but realistically she’s out of her depth and the doctor manages to convince her to not call it in

she then goes down to the station to ask if there’s been any mention of the things she’s seen that evening. we see her get frustrated

later in the episode she suggests her and ryan do some investigating

11.03, rosa

yaz immediately steps in when ryan is assaulted

while talking with ryan she mentions her job and the things she’s experienced

along with the rest of the fam, yaz then helps with investigating what’s going on with rosa

1.04, arachnids in the uk

yaz’s dad uses the fact yaz is a police officer to sort out all the stuff he’s been noticing and collecting. she said she has mentioned it to them and they’re looking into it. (it’s not said but I think it’s possible that they don’t really care and aren’t actually doing much/any looking into it, maybe bc yaz is newer on the job and doesn’t get listened to as much/taken as seriously)

later in the episode yaz goes to pick up her mum and goes into police mode to try and calm down the situation when robertson pulls out a gun

11.05, the tsuranga conundrum

thirteen gives yaz the responsibility of keeping an eye on the pting, which involves using a weapon to stun it. it makes sense for yaz to get this responsibility over ryan/graham bc she has some kind of weapons training

11.07, kerblam!

yaz searches for dan, asks about where he is and generally seems to find it important that she does what she can for him/his daughter. (i do believe that most companions would probs feel similarly about this but with yaz i think it is related to her being a police officer bc she would have training in ways to help loved ones of a deceased person and we also see yaz supporting children multiple other times during this season so I think it’s safe to say it’s important to her (and relates to why she got the job as a police officer in the first place). while I think most companions would want to find dan, I’m not sure how many would want to go and see his daughter or be as passionate)

we also see her grab and detain charlie effectively, something I’m sure she would have been taught during training

11.08, the witchfinders

after willa’s granny gets pulled out of the water, yaz is the one to check her pulse to see if she’s still alive

yaz then takes it upon herself to go and find willa. she knows how to approach and talk to her and she uses her own experiences as a way to try and relate/understand how willa is feeling

in this episode we again see yaz wanting to help a child, and it has strong parallels to what we see later in can you hear me, with yaz being the police officer and willa being yaz

11.09, it takes you away

we see yaz helping another child, she knows how to talk to her and keep her calm and tells ryan that it’s because she’s had training

a bit later in the episode she goes into police mode when ribbons pulls out a knife on graham

resolution

yaz takes lin and mitch’s information, escorts of them out of the site and is seen being the one trying to get in contact with lin later in the episode

12.01 spyfall pt1

at the beginning of s12 we see yaz telling her boss why she won’t be around to work. he’s not too happy about it. it’s clear she’s taken a lot of time away from work recently in favour of being with the doctor

this is small but the way she says this has always had kinda authoritative vibes to me? idk how to explain it

later in the episode yaz goes undercover with ryan. she is clearly more confident than he is. she tries to reassures him, covers for him when he’s acting weird and is good at asking barton questions

when she gets trapped in the kasaavin dimension she reassures herself

12.04, nikola tesla’s night of terror

she confronts the guy when he comes into wherever tf they were in this scene idr

12.05 fugitive of the judoon

the doctor uses yaz being a police officer as a way to try and get the judoon to believe what she’s saying

kinda a small thing but yaz is the one who finds something actually useful when search lee and ruth’s flat, potentially meaning she has some kind of training/knows more about searching for evidence

yaz uses the fact that as a police officer she can speak more on the judoon’s level and uses it as a way to stall them

12.06, praxeus

yaz mentions being ‘on sabbatical’. I don’t know if this is supposed to be taken as she actually is on sabbatical (aka paid leave) or if it’s just for ease in the convo (as in jake and co don’t need her life story so just not correcting it is easier) (back in spyfall her excuse for not being at work was another ‘secondment’ (which means she’s been assigned work at a different place) so either that isn’t the excuse she’s using anymore and she is just straight up taking leave or, like I said, she’s just going with the sabbatical convo for ease bc the details don’t really matter, what matters is she’s pointing out that bc she isn’t on official police work, she doesn’t go around saying she’s police, unlike jake who clearly does)

I think what happens here is a mix of yaz being a more seasoned companion, us seeing yaz get more reckless (clara vibes) but also potentially police vibes in in that she’s noticing what’s important and wants to investigate it

12.07, can you hear me?

in this episode we find out what made yaz want to become a police officer in the first place. a police officer helped her when she was in a bad place, she goes on to want to do the same for others

12.09/10, ascension of the cybermen/the timeless children

yaz gives some small pep talks and knows how to reassure people. we’ve seen her do this a bit before with other characters. this far into yaz’s time on the tardis, some of these moments do feel more doctor-y than police training-y but it still feels work mentioning

13.01, the halloween apocalypse

when yaz and the doctor first get to dan’s house, yaz calls to ask if anyone is home and then looks around to get an idea of who lives there

13.02, war of the sontarans

when yaz meets the tunnel guy she asks him what’s going on and she tries to talk to him in a way that keeps him calm because she can tell he seems unstable/confused

when meeting vinder, yaz initially introduces herself normally but when vinder introduces himself using his titles she does the same as a way to show she’s on his level (some ppl take this scene to be contradictory to other moments where I guess it’s implied she quit her job but I don’t think it matters. the reason she says this is bc of how vinder introduced himself, it’s got nothing to do with whether she is actually still police or not. I think it’s more interesting to parallel it with her not claiming it be police when jake mentions that he’s police. in that situation things were less scary and she wasn’t alone but here she is alone and wants to be seem as authoritative as possible to this stranger (vinder))

when swarm and azure show up yaz to keep some control/gain respect but they obviously don’t give a fuck lmao

13.03, once, upon time

a small moment but we see yaz on the job in her memories

13.05, survivors of the flux

yaz fights someone off pretty skillfully, presumably something she would’ve been trained in

the power of the doctor

the doctor tells them to give yaz a gun. she obviously trusts her with it because she knows yaz will have had training (and yaz says as much)

in conclusion

ppl like to say yaz being a police officer is basically not mentioned and i just think that’s.. not true. if you average it out, based on the moments in this thread, it works out that it’s mentioned/something directly related to police training is brought up about once an ep which imo is more than enough I don’t really know what ppl want when they say there’s not enough of it. there’s a clear story of first of all why yaz wanted to be a police officer (bc a police officer helped her), why she didn’t like it (bc she was stuck doing boring stuff when she wanted to be out helping ppl) and how travelling with the doctor gave her what she wanted more than being with the police ever did (we see her doing good and helping ppl pretty much every episode) and also in my opinion through the seasons while we do see her use her training/mention the police, over time she starts to be more doctor-like than police-like in the way she talks and handles situations which is why in s11 there’s more clear examples in almost every ep of yaz talking very police-like/using her training but then later in the show it’s less bc she’s switched to being more doctor-y

when Bea show up and pick up Mary

(I would like to headcanon Bea volunteered to come all the way to pick up Mary not only because Mary is her friend but because she suspects Mary already found Ava and she wanted to see her)

And I would like to think that I’m right(Bea your gay is showing people don’t just stared at your left mirror standing like that)

before i talk about the “Beatrice is a badass” scene

Two things i wanna talk about

One

How do I know Mary knows something is up with Beatrice and Ava?

One episode later she basically compared what Shannon is to her

To what Ava is to Bea

“Letting Duretti get away with murder”

That’s 100% about Shannon

Now we all know who Shannon is to Mary ;)

The fact that she used their relationship and tried to convinced Bea hey you gotta do something you girl friend might die if you don’t

Yeah she knows definitely

And Two, this conversation between Bea and Camila

fun fact, Camila is this first one to call Beatrice Bea

I would like to headcanon that whenever Bea were tasked to train new recruits, in order to make them feel more comfortable, at some point Beatrice would let them call her Bea as is sign of closeness(Kinda like a “ My name is Yasmin Khan but my friends call me yaz situation)

Or is just Camila being Camila

either way is cute asf

and I love that Ava after being trained by Bea for two months calls her Bea most of the time too

just look them IM-

Remember when I said that she is not good at initiating physical contact yet her love language is physical touch?

There’s still a slight hesitation but she definitely are more comfortable here

make sense cause she did know Camila longer compare to Ava

Personally I’m leaning towards the halo is just a tool the one who’s in control is the user

And how powerful it can be is up to the bearer

Because in ep 3 when she is tied to the table

I’m guessing all she’s thinking is how to free herself

And the halo reacted to her thoughts by phasing her though the bed, freeing her

I think the same happened here

All she is thinking is how to save Beatrice and Mary

From the trajectory of the bullets(the slow mo at the end of the gif )

Is going the opposite side from where Mary and Bea is

Ava and Mary’s sibling dynamic is real

Now something that I noticed from the walk to the van I want to talk about

Now this could just be a simple error

But being the overthinker that I am

I would like to believe Bea was so worried about Ava that she had to check twice

This scene is giving Clarke Griffin from the 100 coming to Lexa’s room and change her perfectly fine bandages to a random cloth just so she could talk to Lexa

Bea chill out she’s not gonna die she can heal herself

I saw someone in the comments of my Tales of the TARDIS uploads bitching about how every companion ends up in a position of authority so here's me going through every televised companion, what occupation they ended up with after leaving the Doctor, and then analyzing whether there is an uncalled for number of authority positions in the list. As this is televised companions only I will be prioritizing the canon of televised stories. Here we go:

Okay. Phew. That's all of them.

So, that's 41, not including K9 (there's too many K9s running around, sorry, also he's a robot dog.) Let's cut Katarina and Sara Kingdom, who I only really included to flex. That's 39. Okay, now let's cut Adric and Kamelion, who died before they could have a post-TARDIS career, as well as Grace and Chang Lee because c'mon, you need to actually travel in the TARDIS before you can have a post-TARDIS career. Now we're down to 35 companions.

Companions in a position of high authority, not just an expert in their field or whatever but with governmental authority are: Susan (choosing the specific EU canon where she's on the Earth Council), Steven, Zoe, Romana, Peri, and... oh wait, that's it! Just those five! And three of them are from sources that aren't the main show episodes! Considering that fiction usually follows interesting people rather than the average person, and both the Doctor and the TARDIS are picky about who they let on board, I'd say that 5/35 is a perfectly reasonable figure. Some people just want to complain.

went like a not insignificant distance into your blog because I can feel the batfamily consuming me and eating my heart and so on. haven’t ever read or watched or played batman however. as I trust your opinions Where do you suggest I start

omg welcome. i have recently been afflicted with something similar so i do have recs!! in terms of canon — which i will say i have middling opinions about, and i'll admit that i haven't really read any comics older than the 90s — i'll recommend the comics that really got me In Trouble: Batman: The Knight (2021). 10 issues by Chip Zdarsky and Carmine Di Giandomenico. this remains my batman holy grail. it's about bruce's journey to becoming batman and focuses on pivotal experiences in his education. it also features my favorite hot sexy murderous ex husband, minhkhoa khan. also, and most importantly, has some of the best written bruce and alfred interactions that i've read.

Nightwing (2016) #78—. by Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo. idk this was one of the first ones i read and i just really enjoy the punchy art and the action and the dialogue. from my understanding from #78 onward, the issues are trying to maybe breathe more life and color into nightwing's stories, and for me it works. it's just super fun and cute and i love dick grayson.

Dark Knights of Steel (2021). another Tom Taylor, this time with Yasmin Putri. idk if you told me a year ago that i would be into reading a DC fantasy AU where superman is a prince and batman is his loyal guard i would have laughed in your face. but it's really very fun and the art is excellent. i have quibbles about the worldbuilding, but the robins make it worth it. the robins feature and they are delightful. excellent brainworm material overall. it's still ongoing and i'm not sure how many issues are planned.

Batman/Superman: World's Finest (2022). this one's by Mark Waid and !!! Dan Mora (whose art i cannot stress enough makes me cry) and it's set to be 10 issues, there's one more coming in december. it's got great sort of vintagey vibes and is just really really fun, featuring dick grayson robin who i would run into a burning building for.

for batman proper i'll say i've been kind of cherrypicking issues to read, but i read a good long run of Batman (2016) starting with #102 because, you guessed it, it's the introduction of minhkhoa khan, aka the ghost-maker. i also enjoyed the Fear State saga (#112-117), but most recently i've been very into the recent issues by Chip Zdarsky and Jorge Jimenez starting with #125, which sets up a conflict between batman and failsafe—an AI bruce himself created in case he ever needed to be taken down. so far the failsafe saga has given me:

bruce badly beaten and bleeding <3

the whole family banding together to try to stop failsafe

batman zur-en-arrh, which is like, if batman fell into a bucket of colorful paint

so, so many tim drake feelings

just to name a few.

PHEW so for non-comic media, i recommend:

Batman: Wayne Family Adventures. a webcomic from Webtoon by CRC Payne and Starbite. new episodes every week and they're FREE and they focus on slice-of-life family stuff and some character-centric episodes, which is all i've ever wanted really. this was the first batman thing i read, which kicked me off into looking into canon more, resulting in this hilarious set of messages to my friend spanning probably no more than a few hours:

for movies, i don't tend to vibe with the characterization of bruce (and damian. and dick. and talia..) but i enjoyed Batman: Bad Blood (2016) and Batman: Under the Red Hood (2010). also Please Watch The Lego Batman Movie. seriously it's really good and fun

for video games, i've only played Batman: Arkham Knight (2015) out of the legendary series of games by Rocksteady. but man is it A Game (admiring). i also do have a lot of fun playing Gotham Knights (2022) because it's focused on the kids in the batfamily, but i will admit that it sure is A Game (derogatory).

jesus this is getting long. in terms of fic, i would probably have to make a separate post for all of the fic that's lit my brain on fire but you can check out my fic rec tag here on tumbo and my public bookmarks on AO3 for some of my favorites. i also highly endorse all of the fics in @vinelark 's batfam fic rec thread on twitter.

the doctor would save me via tardis & i mean. the tardis will be completely fine in a burning building so i'm saving the doctor

this feels like a doctor who episode already lol

the tardis spends the entire 24 hours engaging in earthly (broadly speaking) delights such as existing in one time at a time and eating Every Food, and the doctor has a similar experience to a demon possessing someone with a chronic illness - oh there is so much wrong with this body. not that they know how to fix it they can barely drive

The Master planned for every circumstance except this one. The Doctor was supposed to regenerate into him; they were not supposed to swap bodies. The TARDIS arrives before he has time to mourn his plan, but a new one forms the moment a bewildered Yaz rushes towards him with open arms.

The Doctor was too weak to reciprocate the human's feelings. If he's going to ruin her reputation, he may as well break her hearts in the process.

Notes:

Yeah, I couldn't leave Power of the Doctor as it was. Yaz and the Doctor deserved their happy ending! But it's me, so they also deserve to get traumatised first. This is very much a fix it as in "these two characters should have kissed on screen", but also how I would fix the plot of the episode to make it a bit more interesting. I only have a vague plan for this so can't promise regular updates, but I haven't been able to stop thinking about Them since sunday, so they should come quick!

Power of the Doctor ramble

So I’m of two minds about the lack of Thasmin kiss. I’ve hopefully figured out a way to watch this with my best friend who doesn’t have cable tomorrow, so once I’ve seen it again and can more fully appreciate what we DID get without my hopes of what we COULD get in the way, I might be able to solidify this a bit more, but. Because on the one hand, what we DID get was incredible! Overall I really really loved the episode! Their scenes together were all so good, there was so much care and respect built into every single line, and Yaz’ Doctorification arc was TRULY incredible. And it builds from and respects the Doctor’s choice in the previous episode, that this is something she just can’t give. And as a very ace person, a story treating platonic love as literally the most important thing in the universe is amazing, actually. And also this is a story of “it matters that the love was there. It didn’t save everyone, but it saved a lot of people, and it matters even if it wasn’t everything we wanted, because the love really was there” story. And I love those stories. But I work in corporate IP media. And I know, all too well, just how hard it is to get queer things greenlit. I have been there. I have spent so much time crying in office bathrooms trying and failing to get something through for characters *much* less brand significant, in much less high-profile formats, than the Doctor. And so I don’t really know if this was what Chibnall (and I don’t pin the “blame” for this on him at all) felt was best for his characters, or if some exec somewhere who hadn’t even read the scripts said “you can go this far and no further. Here is the line. These are the Rules.” I suspect, from my experience, that it’s the latter, although because of my experiences I might be reading into it too much. I have no way of knowing for sure. And I have to admit, it hurts that I thought maybe, just maybe, we might win this one.

Also, being a professional editor means sometimes it’s hard to turn off Editor Brain, and for the most part this episode did (which is high praise!), but I wanted 1-3 more lines in their final scene together. We’ll see if watching it without a GODDAMN COMMERCIAL BREAK in between “let’s not say goodbye” and Yaz being dropped off (seriously BBC America you’re the worst) changes my mind about this, but I think I just needed a tiny little bit more to get that Yaz “I’m with you, whatever happens” Khan would willingly walk away so easily. And I loved her arc and I’m SO RELIEVED she’s alive and I think she’s been left in a great place, and overall I think Chibs is pretty spare with his writing and that’s what I like about it? He doesn’t belabor the point, but this one, this needed just a tiny bit more, I think. It needed a “I think I have to do this next bit alone” / “Are you sure?” / “I promised I would get you home, Yasmin Khan. And I will.” / “Let’s not say goodbye.” Just that last little bit felt like it was missing, just one last little bit. Also I hope Yaz gets to have a good cry somewhere because she’s dropped straight from “my not-quite-girlfriend/best friend died” to “former companion support group” with nothing in between and OOF what whiplash.

Also also I knew that was exactly what returning-DT would say. I KNEW IT. *sighs forever* (10 brought me into this show I love 10 I will always love 10 but - again, less for the-actual-show-itself reasons and more for external fears that RTD will just pretend 13′s era didn’t exist reasons - I am not excited to see him back in this precise way, but we shall see.)

#also they can't call him the 14th doctor because also in corporate IP that would fuck up the metadata on the toy sales #and we can't have that #they gonna put 10/14 on all the packaging?
