Stucky Recs: Road Trips!

Well, well, well. Look at that! After only three months of constant whining about having no time to do it, I've finally managed to put together a new rec list! Yay.

The theme of this list was requested by multiple people and really, who doesn't love a good road trip story, right? And let me tell you, there are so many good ones, this post could've been twice as long. I'm actually already hoarding fics in my little folder to do a part two later this year.

But for now, please enjoy my effusive ramblings about the following 10 Road Trip fics + 1 Rail Trip fic:

🚗 you're gonna have it your way or nothing at all by biblionerd07 | T, 15K

Author's summary: Steve and Bucky aren't really much of a Steve and Bucky anymore these days. Steve's sure it's because Bucky doesn't see himself as the same guy who used to love Steve. In a desperate attempt to prove him wrong, Steve begs Bucky to go on a road trip together, the way they used to dream about, and does his best to remind Bucky of who he is.

A post-CW canon divergent fic that's in a lot of ways very soft, but with just enough of an edge to keep things interesting and the reader uncertain as to how everything will play out in it. This starts with a somewhat disaffected Bucky who has not (yet) regained all of his memories and a Steve who, in his desperation to reconnect with him, tries so hard but ends up saying and doing all the wrong things. As they travel around the country, they both find ways to let go and to unlearn and relearn each other. Features moments of heart melting yet tongue-in-cheek sappiness (so the absolute best kind of sappiness) and a fun background Sam/T'Challa pairing.

The ultimate, unashamed Steve-and-Bucky-visit-the-Grand-Canyon wish-fulfillment fantasy—and I mean that in the best possible way. The summer road trip vibes are impeccable. This is technically the third part in the Litanies series, but it absolutely works as a standalone. However, if you ask me whether you should read the entire series, the answer is obviously a resounding yes. It's not only one of the best EG-Fix-Its I've read but also comes with an additional fun and sexy twist on how to get these two to finally get their heads out of their asses. Anyway, in this installment, they have already done that and now they get to enjoy the road, their freedom, and most of all, each other. Includes: healing along the way, long overdue conversations, and the attempt to reconcile the joy of finally having all that time with the bittersweet reality of having all that time.

🚗 Blue Moon by what_alchemy | E, 15K

Author's summary: "Now are you gonna run away with me or not, Rogers?”

God, this story (this author, really)! I’ve read this fic so many times I’ve lost count. It features one of my favorite post-WS characterizations of Bucky. One where he's still—somehow after everything—a romantic at heart, but also clear-eyed and unsentimental enough about certain things to not shy away from laying out some uncomfortable truths for Steve and the reader alike (there’s one line in particular that is seared into my brain and every time I read it I personally feel so called out). Steve may be a bit more cautious and softer about it, but oh, he gives back just as good. Nobody is handling anyone with kid gloves here. A story about learning how to be together (again), defining one's very own version of 'Happy Ever After', and about being very much in love, and also very horny for each other.

🚗 Not Language but a Map (The Grammar of Sensation) by dorian_burberrycanary | E, 20K

Author's summary: Steve has never felt right running away from a fight, even if the fight is with unanswered questions. But it’s not running if it’s a road trip and the oldest, thorniest unanswered question is along for the ride.

If you follow my blog you will probably already know that I am head over heels in love with this entire EG-Fix-It Series. This third story is finished, but Steve & Bucky's road trip continues in part 4, which is currently being posted (updates weekly). I believe this fic can be read as a standalone but, really, why would you deprive yourself of even a single word of this absolutely magnificent series? Every word, every detail, every narrative choice feels deliberate and well thought out. It's a masterclass in subtle storytelling and yet so rich in its themes, characterizations and descriptions of people, places, and food. This fic will make you hungry in so many different ways. A lot happens between the lines which may require some patience at times, but when the emotional payoff hits—it really, really hits. I cannot recommend this enough. Spectacular all around.

🚗 where the days are longer by endofadream | E, 13K

Author's summary: And maybe that’s what they’re running from. Those ghosts. That minefield. The suffocating pressure to live up to who they used to be when who they used to be has now become stale, recycled words in textbooks and museums and clickbait online articles.

They fuck off to the coast, trying to put as many miles between them and D.C. as possible. New York is loud and claustrophobic at the best of times, but California has the open skies and roads that make Steve ease a little more into his skin.

I have such an immense fondness for this story. There are some very minor problems with shifting POV in the first chapter, but please don't let this deter you from giving this story a chance—it's got so much heart. This is a slow and meandering piece that can be best summed up as: Steve and Bucky being so very much in love. Set in some undefined period post-CATWS, in a world where the events of Civil War never happened, Steve and Bucky decide they’re tired of fighting and conforming to what everyone else wants them to be and just get in a car and drive all the way to California. There, they start figuring out how to live in the future while also accepting that they can never quite leave the past behind, and that time, indifferent to the tragedies of (not quite) mortal men, will inevitably keep marching on—whether they want it to or not. To quote directly from the story itself: They’re both men out of time, so they make their own.

🚗 Lightning in a Bottle by odetteandodile | E, 63K

Author's summary: The problem, Steve thinks, isn’t so much his motorcycle giving up the ghost on a lonely stretch of highway through a lonely stretch of the country. He doesn’t mind stretching his legs or the prospect of hitchhiking.The problem is the roiling black blanket of storm clouds slowly spreading itself over the landscape headed his direction…

Steve Rogers is looking to hitch on a highway abandoned by everyone smart enough to avoid a looming storm. Bucky Barnes is the professional storm chaser who offers him a ride. It gets more complicated from there. 

This AU offers an intriguing twist on the The Road Trip as a genre, Shrunkyclunks as a trope, and modern!Bucky as a character—it's an electric ride from start to finish—in more ways than one… *wiggles eyebrows* ...yeah ok, I’ll see myself out. It was either this or something about 'chasing all kinds of storms together' and I just couldn’t resist. Anyway, this story is a clever and unique take on canon events (not just limited to the CA movies!) and I don’t really want to give too much away and spoil all the fun, so I’ll just say this: If you are in the mood for a thrilling sci-fi/adventure/romance hybrid-story with beautiful evocative writing, characters that actually act like the smart, competent grown-ups they supposedly are, sex scenes that are both hot and emotional, and a touch of spy/mission fic to go along with a free crash course in weather phenomena—this is the fic for you!  

🚗 The Only Familiar Thing by brideofquiet | E, 39K

Author's summary: Steve takes a breath, steels himself, and asks, “Where are we going, Buck?”

Bucky raises an eyebrow. “You’re the one driving, Steve.”

And before Steve can protest, Bucky gives him that broad, toothy grin again. The worry pitted in his stomach ebbs, and he decides—what the hell? Why not? Steve pulls his helmet on and swings a leg over the bike. Bucky settles in behind him, and he cranks the engine to life.

A Post-CATWS fic, in which Bucky has returned to Steve after being on the run for a while. They are together, share an apartment in Brooklyn, and Bucky has regained most of his memories—so yay! All good, right? Well, things are going…uh...let's say they're going. See, Steve and Bucky are still very much in love—the thing is, they're pretty good at the being in love part but pretty awful at the talking about it (and everything else that matters) part. So much so that they accidentally on purpose non-communicate and out-stubborn each other into going on a road trip, where things will eventually—inevitably—come to a head. Throughout the trip, the tension between them builds and builds until finally they have to admit that sometimes being partners, lovers, best friends, and knowing someone better than anybody else in the world, still doesn't mean that you can *actually* read their mind. Sometimes you gotta use your words. The author skillfully manages to create a story that treats its characters and their conflict seriously, while also infusing it with a healthy dose of humor and romance to always keep the readers on the right side of 'frustrated' (i. e. invested, not irritated).

🚗 old college try by kafkian | E, 19K

Author's summary: Bucky wonders if it’ll ever stop feeling like stealing: Steve Rogers, Captain America, the hope of a nation tucked into Bucky’s right hand. It’s the heist of the century.

In which Bucky Barnes remembers himself, Steve, and what it means to be selfish – not necessarily in that order.

Another old favorite of mine. Set post-CACW, this fic starts with a recently defrosted Bucky and a somewhat unmoored Steve in Wakanda, as they try to figure out what to do next: Keep fighting the never-ending wars of other people or run away, see the world, and retire to a quiet life? Well, since this is a road trip fic, I think you can guess which option they go for. It's a beautifully written story about Steve and Bucky's journey across continents and decades, and their ultimate arrival in a life that they never dared to hope they could have one day. This was written in 2016, so right between the fanfic avalanche caused by TWS and the frenzy of EG-Fix-Its. Re-reading this for the first time in quite a while made me realize that—aside from being a fantastic story in its own right—it's also an interesting commentary on popular Stucky fics that came before it (you can see clear influences but also some gentle rebuttals to popular fanon of the time) as well as very much a product of its time. And I don't mean that in a negative or disrespectful way at all, but simply, that it also serves as a fandom artifact; a text that reveals and reacts to certain trends, shifting attitudes, and developments in Stucky fanfiction over the years. Either way it's definitely well worth a read.

🚗 The Long Way: A Stucky Fancomic by BeaArthurPendragon, LittleWolf82 | T

Authors' summary: After Thanos is defeated, Steve doesn't stay in the past. This is the story of where he and Bucky go next.

A little something different here: a road trip fancomic! And oh, it's only one of my favorite fic writers teaming up with one of my favorite artists—what's not to love? This is an EG-Fix-It that simply ignores the last five minutes that Ruined It All and instead tells the story of what could've or should've happened to Steve and Bucky after EG. A story that is infinitely kinder and truer to these characters. Sweetly told and beautifully drawn—an absolutely wonderful collaboration.

🚗 i need a forest fire by tomorrowsrain | T, 65K

Author's summary: In which Tony Stark makes a reckless decision, becomes a wanted fugitive, goes on the run with the former Winter Soldier, and learns how to forgive. For his part, Bucky Barnes is just trying to hold himself together. AU, post-Civil War.

This is the only fic on this rec list that does not have Bucky and Steve going on a journey but instead it's Bucky and...Tony. WAIT! Hey, come back! I know that for a lot of Steve and/or Bucky fans the idea of reading a 65K fic that heavily features Tony Stark does not really sound like an enticing prospect. BUT! Hear me out. This is a fic that runs with one of the core concepts of fix-it fanfiction, which is: What if these characters actually talked to each other for a change? And yes, it gets messy and complicated and often painful—nothing is glossed over and no one is let off the hook easy. What you get here is a fantastically written story that is simultaneously an intimate & slow character study of both Bucky and Tony, a grand sweeping road trip fic with a thrilling plot that will have you on the edge of your seat (there is a moment in this where I really thought it was all over), AND a decade spanning tale of epic love. If you're worried that there is too little Stucky or Steve in this, don't be. Even before he shows up around the halfway mark of the fic, Steve is very much present the entire time. It's incredible what the author pulls off here. This is one of my all-time favorite fics. I love it a totally not normal amount.

🚂 Will There be Any Freight Trains in Heaven? by phoenixflight | E, 56K

Author's summary: It's summer of 1934, a quarter of all Americans are unemployed, and record numbers of migrant workers are hopping freight trains to seek their fortune out west. What are two boys from Brooklyn to do?

Or, Steve and Bucky ride the rails, become socialists, and fall in love, in no particular order.

This story is a bit of an outlier on this list because not only is it the only fic that's set in the pre-war period, it's also not strictly a road trip fic, but a rail trip fic. Usually the road trips in these stories are either (1) a last ditch effort at saving a friendship/relationship, (2) a way of finding oneself and/or making peace with one's past, or (3) the 'we survived all this and here we are together in the future, so let's go and actually see some of that world we fought so hard to save' victory lap. The impetus for travel in this fic, however, is born out of sheer necessity. It's the height of the Great Depression and Steve and Bucky are really poor and really desperate—so desperate even that they're willing to leave behind Brooklyn, their families, and their lives as they know it to go look for work in the West. This is not a fic that's always easy to read, circumstances are dire, attitudes are, ahem, authentic to the period, and the nostalgia-tinted glasses about the good old days before the war will get firmly knocked off your face. It's also a story that will show you time and time again that sometimes you will find kindness, love and almost overwhelming humanity in the places you least expect it. And listen, if period accuracy and a very political Steve Rogers do not convince you, let me tell you that there's also a lot of pining in this. So. Much. Pining.

This is Korea's first (kinda) upbeat version of a BL featuring already established boyfriends, one of whom is on military leave, trying to decide on coming out, family life, and the future. All of these are themes Korea will pretty much never tackle again, retreating as they would to their bubble. But what a fun little offering this little show was and is to this day. You should watch it.

Love Sick & Love Sick 2

This is one of those BLs that owes almost nothing to yaoi, although it started a number of tropes that are now endemic to Thai BL. What it is, instead, is a well scripted story of bisexual self-discovery and the inherent chaos of loving someone of the same gender for the first time, all wrapped up in hormones, existing relationships, and communication issues. It is high school queer angst at its messiest. Nothing is going to be easy for these boys because queer isn’t easy but also because life isn’t easy… welcome to adulthood sweethearts.

I'm actually considering a rewatch of these beginning of 2024 in honor of the 10 year anniversary if anyone wants to join.

Seven Days

The asker already mentioned it but still, never doubt my ability to recommend this show. One of the best live action yaois ever made, with perfectly structured angst, fantastic characters and acting, and no problematic tropes (rare in Japanese BL). The leads have excellent chemistry although it’s low heat there’s still some really cute mutual kisses.

When Chinese BL was good it was very dirty good and when it was bad it was censored. This is the model for that statement: rich kid falls madly for the genius poor kid in his class, starts an aggressive pursuit, includes kidnapping for love, obsession, stepbrother trope, plus some cheating. I love this BL because of what I could have been. Just stop watching it after The Sex Scene. Okay?

What to say about this show, the origin of the Thai BL pulps? It’s objectively terrible, and not just the leads but the side couple too - yet I love it. I tend to call myself the “world’s foremost Make It Right apologist.” I recognize the issues but I find it utterly charming, especially Tee’s utter devotion to Fuse the baby bi disaster.

Catfishing assassins on either side of a turf war who fall in love not knowing they are on opposite sides. Or do they? Good fight sequences, mature characters, high heat, very suspenseful, AND an HEA. If you like KinnPorsche or Kiseki you will LOVE this one.

HIStory Obsessed

Taiwan 2017 Viki

I weirdly love this but you should know what you are in for: that title. It has a stalking theme meets fated mates and quite a bit of dubious consent. Uke obsessed with seme to the point of losing himself and his identity dies after being rejected, and then has a chance to reboot his life. He decides to save himself by never falling in love. But destiny is a bitch, and this time the seme becomes obsessed with him. This one owes a lot to dark Chinese and Japanese BL, but kind of corrects for the expected sad dead finale by ending happily and playing with a ton of BL tropes. The leads have good chemistry, it's higher heat and the first time Taiwan starts to push that, and VERY DRAMATIC.

in another can't focus phase.. it's really annoying. i really really really don't want to study. i'm kinda hating one of the subjects i'm having and that upsets my brain a lot. it's ruining all my days.

SD has been really neat tho,, the teacher is brilliant and a ton of fun. classes are a blast! the minitests have been going pretty well, too. feeling accomplished haha

both projects make me want to quit the course, move into the mountains to plant carrots and never turn back (ES in particular)

sadly, haven't been reading all that much either. The Enigma of Room 622 is great, but the stakes are low and i want something more alive. am considering putting it on hold and picking up sth else. ig i need a steady flow of absolutely devastating, heart-wrenching books to keep me going. 2 chill books in quick succession is too much, apparently, hahaha,, i'm considering House of Leaves, by Mark Z. Danielewski, or mby Hummingbird Salamander, by Jeff Vandeemeer? sth like that, recs are appreciated tbh

as for solutions to the current issue, i've been focusing on sleeping and eating well, drinking lots of water and moving my body regularly. it's not helping and it's making me want to avoid studying even more cause everything else is just that much better than the projects.

oh boy ok coming of age recs I can do this. I haven't read any coming of age books since I was a teenager though so keep in my my memory of these are all hazy

books:

the perks of being a wallflower by stephen chbosky - hallmarker of the coming of age genre, read this when I was 16 and cried, even if you've seen the movie I highly recommend the book

aristotle and dante discover the secrets of the universe by benjamin alire saenz - literally was one of my favorite books for so many years. I read it when I was 15 and became obsessed with it. I still look back on it so warmly it's just such a great book

it's kind of a funny story by ned vizzini - also read this one when I was like 16ish. I remembered enjoying it but not as much as the other two I've listed here. still very good though!

movies:

cha cha real smooth (2022) - actually one of my favorite coming of age films I've ever seen. it's a coming of age film about a guy in his early 20s instead of in his teens which is refreshing in its own. it hit particularly hard for me because I saw it when I was 22 and freshly graduated from college unsure what to do, the main character is 22 and freshly graduated from college unsure what to do. it's also a very unique setup and I really loved how they pulled it off

the edge of seventeen (2016) - this might be a controversial pick because the main character is actually pretty insufferable in this, but that's part of why I enjoyed it. the character is meant to be insufferable. she's a teenage girl dealing with the hell of being a teenage girl and she sucks! it's an intentional thing and it does it very well! I would say it still falls flat in some areas, but I'm mainly recommending it because it's so refreshing to have an mc genuinely be a shitty person

sing street (2016) - I count this as a coming of age movie but it's also kind of a music movie? it's incredibly fun no matter what. the songs are so catchy, the characters are all great, and the relationships are just all very well done

the kings of summer (2013) - genuinely why do I never hear anyone talk about this movie. I haven't seen it in so long but I remember it being incredibly funny with a great dose of summertime whimsy

hunt for the wilderpeople (2016) - tbh I never thought of this as a coming of age movie and it might be a bit different than most of the films on here but I was looking up lists of coming of age movies to try and remember which ones I've seen and I saw this one mentioned a few times. if you're a fan of taika waititi films, in my opinion this is his best one hands down. it's hilarious but also incredibly sweet and heartwarming at the same time

moonrise kingdom (2012) - very charming and storybook esque in the way all wes anderson films are, but with a really sweet story between two kids at its core. again, different from most of the ones on this list, but definitely an enjoyable one all the same

omg yay I am so chuffed you watched/loved I hate suzie 💕💕 and lucky for u I love a messy protagonist it's basically where I live mentally so here are me top messy main character recs that I don't see reccomended enough:

The Bisexual - honestly if you love IHS this is very close spiritually. Leila is Iranian American woman living as a lesbian in the UK whose life blows up when she realises she's bi

Preppers - this is an Australian show that has a very similar insane celebrity cancellation plotline as IHS. follows an Aboriginal morning show host who gets cancelled after a public meltdown live on air so she runs away to live with a bunch of doomsday preppers.

Hitmen - Dark comedy from the UK about 2 best friends who are middle aged women and are also assassins but they're not very good at their job. One of the funniest shows to come out in the last few years.

Chewing Gum - created by Michaela Coel, UK series is a comedy about a working class religious Black woman in her 20s trying to find someone she can lose her virginity to. Everything cool about Fleabag was done in this show first.

Search Party - the messyness of these characters is boundless and absurd. Dramedy about a group of hapless 20 somethins who decide to go looking for their missing mutual friend.

Bad Sisters - Dark comedy series about 4 sisters trying to kill their 5th sister's rotten abusive husband. Especially good if you enjoy the family drama element of IHS

Selfie - my beloved. It's hard to find it streaming anywhere these days but if you can, watch it. Sitcom modern retelling of My Fair Lady starring Karen Gillan and John Cho.

We Are Lady Parts - masterpiece of a show about a bunch of Muslim women in their 20s/30s who are in a punk rock band. I don't really think they're messy to the extent Suzie is, but if you love the raw honesty and heart of IHS, walp has it in OODLES.

I'd also reccomend any other show Lucy Prebble has written/written for because they're all brilliant odessys on messy painfully human people ❤️

ok here's them throuses fic recs in a format that won't cap my character count: "Watchtower" by mareza [https://archiveofourown.org/works/20755727] Sylvain angst abt Gautier's role as defending the border with Sreng extended towards that idea of "I spent so much time look out that I failed to look in". Goes from pre-game to war phase. Tone is dramatic and sad. Faerghus is where fun happy people go to have that fixed, etc etc "a poem for strong things (boy with crest)" by.. oh this is also mareza lmao. [https://archiveofourown.org/works/20568998] it IS About Dimitri but uhm. well. ok the premise is that school phase some of the kids are speculating on if dimitri's crest means he would injure a sexual partner and several of them bet on if they can seduce him to find out. it's a school phase comedy that features everyone on your faves list (sylvain most, dorothea also a significant amount, edelgard is only there for a couple scenes but she has opinions). It's a lot of talking about Dimitri obviously since he's the subject of their bet, but each of the characters participating in the bet has a segment that's told from their PoV so you're really getting more on what /they're/ thinking rather than what Dimitri is doing or thinking. If you are worried about the implications of "a bunch of people are trying to seduce this sad wet boy under false pretenses" he's ok in the end. OK PREFACE this one is about Claude (from Cyril's POV) and spoils some important Claude stuff that you may have seen Suggested but not outright Said, and also some specifics related to that which are not revealed until later in the game than where you are I THINK it's been several years since I played throuses so WARNINGS. actually maybe don't read this one until you're done with claude's route or at least pretty far in there. once you know all the claude stuff. but ok but I did not care at all of Cyril's worship of Rhea and this fic makes me appreciate Cyril. So it gets props for that. Finally, in honor of Time Travel Fics, "I Know, I'll know (that you were my future, and you were my past)" by placesinfive [https://archiveofourown.org/works/42667977]. Blue lions route takes place nebulously in war phase. Byleth time powers hijink sends the gang back in time where they have brief encounters with younger versions of... each other. Each of these little scenes is very sweet, and the author put a lot of thought into who meets who. Shout out to Annette's, Ashe's, and Mercedes' segments which make me feel things. There is a final section where they all reconvene and have awkwardness about meeting each others' past selves that honestly I think... ehh, "weakens the whole" is a bit harsh but I think the fic could have done without it. Maybe the author wanted to end on some levity? Or maybe the author just liked it and wanted to have it! They can do whatever they want, I'm not a cop.

ah yes. the curse of Too Many WIPs and excited brain. I've set aside my witcher fic WIPs for the moment while I try to make a festivid treat before go-live on Saturday. Racing to a deadline!!! Exhausting after the last three weeks I've had (why is January feeling like it's 10 years long??? why has all the bad stress happened??). But it's also Exhilarating because !! Vidding!!! Oooh the joy of making video treats. Hoping people will enjoy the surprise. I haven't participated in Festivids since 2019 I think?? Maybe 2020. Too long. But I was just not in the right mindset for sign-ups or treat-making. Thankfully this year I was very ready to play. I've tried not to peek at the list of fandoms in the collection in order to be even more surprised. But I took a peek anyway! Eeeeee! There are gonna be so many VIDS!! THIS WEEKEND!! I need to poke around and see where where a watch party is happening on discord. Oooh maybe I will also manage to make a festivids recs list (after I finish my recs lists for @poetikat and @sargassostories 😍). Perhaps I will manage to finish my other recs lists I had started last year, too, hmm. Too many things. vidding YAY. fandom event joy hurrayyyyyy. but soon I will be crawling back to @littlestsnicket and bemoaning the fact that I don't remember how to finish a sentence, let alone my fic WIP. but I will finish because I'm so close to being done and the fic makes me laugh. Since I'm going through my old FFnet bookmarks lately, in part checking to see which ones can also be found on Ao3 too these days, here's a rec list of fics that I first read on ffnet back when that was still my main site for reading fanfic. It's the first of what will likely be several lists.

The story descriptions are mine, not the original, so they help convey my impression of the fics.

The Muppet Contracts by Lucinda- A crossover between Angel the Series and The Muppet Show. When a less than reputable agent to the stars is brutally murdered, all signs seem to point towards Count von Count, a dangerous vampire who commanded the respect of Angel's grandsire, the Master. But not everything is quite adding up.

Has a prequel called Counts of Blood. Not long before the Slayer's arrival in Sunnydale, Count von Count visits his old friend, the Master.

They are both rated M by the author for violence, mostly (but not entirely) on the part of the Count who - though still a muppet with OCD - is very much a dangerous vampire here. And I'd say the second fic (the prequel) earns that rating a lot more than the first. Sadly these don't seem to have been migrated to Ao3 yet.

Accidental Drag Queen & the Undercover Detective by serafina20 - Jonathan Crane runs away to Chicago after escaping Arkham during a riot. After his first attempt to start over fails, he finds himself working at a drag bar and cultivating his own drag persona as Sugar. Unfortunately there's a very good chance that the attractive PI who keeps showing up is actually the Batman in disguise...

Rated M for sex later in the fic and for a sexual assault that takes place shortly before the start of the fic. This one has been migrated to Ao3 (yay!) and apparently has an in progress sequel that I hadn't known about (last updated in 2022), which is great since the first fic ends a bit abruptly.

Marching to the Beat of a Different Timeline by fandomlver - A BtVS and Sarah Jane Adventures xOver where Luke and Dawn meet at Oxford and their disparate worlds of aliens and demons collide head on. The fic is complete along with a completed sequel called Travelling in a Wibbly Wobbly Liney Whiney, where the Doctor, Amy, and Rory get in on the fun. The first fic is marked gen (it's really more pre-relationship), but the second fic has Dawn/Luke marked as the main ship.

Both have been moved to Ao3 and are rated T.

Soulworld by Philip S - First of a series. In 1907, Angel and Spike changed the destiny of the world when they invoked ancient magic to return the souls of the dead to every vampire in existence. Angel swore to protect his ensouled brethren and for the last 100 or so years has done exactly that. The arrival of a new Slayer in LA poses a threat to his people... but also an opportunity to save a young woman from the Watcher's Council.

There's a number of other fics in this series that can be found through the Author's page on ffnet, so I'm not going to list them all here. Looks like they're all rated M and none of them have been migrated to Ao3. It's a really interesting concept and I remember finding it quite well done. So far it seems to be holding up on re-read too. It's Buffy/Angel as the eventual main ship and, if I'm remembering correctly, some of the later fics include Faith/Spike as well.

Something More Important by serafina20 - The start of a series where Steve Rogers is a woman. Sort of. She doesn't think there's so much difference between men and women anyway, so what's the big deal if everyone thinks she's a man? Aside from the legal trouble, of course.

Steve's pretty genderfluid in this one and I think it was one of the first fics I read with a character where the genderbended character was giving off major nonbinary or bigender given how her relationship with gender is treated. Which, back when I hadn't yet figured out I was a she/they enby myself, surprised me how comforting and relatable it was to read.

Most of the fics in this series are rated M (some are T) and it is on Ao3 now too. It's both Steve/Bucky and Steve/Peggy ship-wise.

Hello internet friend! I am very excited but none of my friends know I read fanfic so I'm bursting at the seams trying not to reveal myself.

So I've been reading fanfic since the dawn of time but I've always been super paranoid about someone finding out, so I do everything on an incognito window and just have 8 billion tabs open that get deleted every time my computer restarts and its not a good system. Today I finally logged into my Ao3 account and discovered a treasure trove of locked fics?!?!?! I have been depriving myself of quality content for YEARS and now my "marked for later" is miles long. I don't think I will ever be productive again but yay!!! ok carry on with life love ya -🕺

Maybe when I get my shit together, I'd love to write a fic where Danny somehow gets that tape with Steve being almost beheaded by Taliban. Idk, maybe he accidentally gots it via YT fucked up recs? I bet Taliban has streamed it worldwide, so it's possible.

Imagine the anguish Danny feels watching it. I'm sure he'd watch it till the end.

Maybe it's been said many times, but still.

The way Steve looks at Danny when Danny becomes completely unhinged: especially, when some crook refuses to cooperate/is being a piece of crap/mentions Danny's daughter/etc.

That look in his eye. Man, that's something else entirely. You can physically feel Steve wishes Danny wouldn't have to resort to violence, and he wishes he could've done that himself. But here's Danny getting his knuckles bruised, and...

Well, fuck.

On s4 rewatch now.

Can we talk how persistent Danny is in trying to warn Steve that Cath is gonna break his heart eventually coz her ex is in the picture again?

Danny's trying to hard to put in Steve's head that he's gonna get hurt again. And honestly, rubbing the salt in the wound like that isn't quite Danny's style - with Steve, anyways. Steve is usually the one who pushes all the buttons, but in this situation I find them somehow reversing roles a bit. Yeah, Danny is always the voice of reason, but I also find it heartwrenching that Danno speaks from experience. And he doesn't want Steve to go down this road of despair. Not because he wouldn't be there for him-ofc, Danno will be because Steve's his friend and more. Beyond Danno's words you feel how he is already sorry for Steve and knows what's coming. And his heart breaks for Steve.

And even though it's wrapped in one of their cargument things, it doesn't make it less of a punch in the gut. Because you, the viewer, know as Danny does too that Steve will be eventually betrayed, and he'll be hurting, and you feel Danny's pain and fear that his friend, after losing so much, being through so much, is gonna get another hit from the person he trusts most.

Hey! I looked up the Jenny Slate quote from your recent fic and then ended up buying her book lol and now I'm really enjoying it! So, thanks for the rec! Have you read it and if so has it inspired any of your other writing/ideas?

Omg yay! I'm so glad you picked this book up, it's seriously one of my favorites. My copy is so marked up, it's insane. I read it at the start of the year and it had such a massive impact on me. I think because the book settled so deeply in my soul that it definitely has influenced my writing in some ways but that quote I believe is the only one that particularly inspired a fic.

However! I have a lot of quotes marked "inspo" in the essay I Died: Bronze Tree, so eventually I think those will find their way into some fics.

Like there's the quote: "There was no other time when I'd shopped for groceries and bought grape jelly, which only you like, and brought it home just to realize the horror of what I'd done, buying purple jelly for a person who is not here."

And: "There was never a time when we went away from each other and kept living somewhere else. I died and there were times when I had been furious at you, when I had leveled sheets of insults at you, prodded at your identity, been bored, felt abandoned, been mad about your unwashed socks and your problems with authority but I lived through it all and I dug deep, I didn't give up, and because I held on, I lived through countless pleasures and beauties with you and your brilliant mind, and we did as much as we could and then you died and then soon after that, I died too."

But also I think that the love expressed in this quote (from Geranium) kind of exists in how Yoongi loves Kid in light of the faults she sees in herself:

"There has been a misunderstanding about wildness. Bring it in, bring it in, bring wildness in, and care for it."

And just because I love this book so much and I want to gush about it for a minute, these are my favorite essays from it: Eclipse, A Prayer, Nice Tings to Do for Tipping Yourself Towards Gentleness and Simple Joy, The Pits, Kathleen/Dog-Flower-Face, Creed, Kinship, Geranium, Night Treats for Her, I Died: Bronze Tree, Dog Paw, and From me to you, from me to everybody.

I got this idea and I said, "ok one thing to come out of retirement, but don't get any hopes up because it had been awhile and I was out of practice, but also because the fandom is massive." I never EVER expected the response I've been given and the thing is, the response ended my retirement. Still can't believe I never realised I have anon asks off when I've been on here since like December. ANYWAY,

19 - Stephen King once said that his muse is a man who lives in the basement. Do you have a muse?

I don't know. I get inspired by lots of things. Music being one of them - I come up with a 'what if every character played an instrument' AU for every fandom I've in, even though most of them never see the light of day. I'm also inspired by songs from time to time, but not as often as other writers, I don't think?

My family also visits Italy every year, and I always get sooo many writing ideas when we're there, it's ridiculous. I think just being in a wildly different place to miserable England shakes up my brain enough that plot bunnies start falling out left right and centre.

29 - If you could write the sequel (or prequel) to any fic out there not written by yourself, which would you choose?

Ooh, this is an interesting question. I went through my recced bookmarks on AO3, aka my absolute fave fics collection. In the end I only found one I would want to add to, since most of them ended in the perfect place. But Kids Protecting Kids by quirkle is a fic that's really stuck with me (everyone should read it), and I would want to write a little mini sequel after Wild wakes up where him and Legend just get to have a little chat and breathe out. together. Just another dollop of comfort atop the hurt/comfort.

33 - How do you feel about crack?

I love crack! And honestly I don't write enough of it nowadays. I'm really good at dialogue so crack used to be my forte, I wrote lots of silly fics back in the day. Now I've moved onto more serious horizons, I suppose, but writing serious fics is still kind of a struggle for me. I miss writing crack. My closest fic to actual crack is probably Five Teaspoons, but that probably counts as more just general humour.

37 - Talk about your current wips.

Oh, you've unleashed a monster by asking me this!!

Someday We'll Stand Here By The Sun (TOH, ongoing) - My magnum opus tbh. It's like 80% written rn, and I'm able to keep up a weekly updating schedule on AO3 because of that. But it's still far from done! Anyway, after S2 finished I was full of post King's Tide ideas, and most of them have made their home in this big multichapter. The main plot is the story of Luz, Amity and their trauma /lh. I have so much brainrot for them and their relationship, and S2B builds on their mutual confession so well. As we know there are two episodes in which Luz shows the same character flaw - hiding things from Amity/her loved ones due to a belief that her problems aren't as important as theirs, and wanting to protect other people's feelings. The fact that Luz doesn't seem to grow out of this flaw despite 2 EPISODES focused on it says to me that it's 100% something ingrained in her that isn't going away anytime soon. But I'll stop before I write a whole Luz character essay.

Point is, with the whole 'helping' Belos thing, Luz totally blames herself for the Draining Spell and is gonna spiral post S2, feeling like she has to get back to the Isles asap and fix all her mistakes, and MAYBE that will make up for how much of a horrible human being she thinks she is. So why did I choose to write from Amity's POV, when I started writing this to explore Luz's emotions? Well, at first I was worried about SWSHBTS being a 'Amity is Luz's therapist' fic, but Amity has so many issues herself that that was not a problem lmao. And I deliberated on doing alternate POVs - even made a pros and cons list - but in the end I went with Amity's POV only because she has a lot of things to say! (But there may be a chapter of Luz's POV... you'll just have to see)

I just love this fic so much, it is my baby, and uploading it is kinda the highlight of my week rn. There is so much in future chapters that I am excited for the world to see. Also, when I started writing it, it was out of motivation to make more Lumity Post King's Tide angst, cause there REALLY wasn't enough, but there have been many more fics in that genre uploaded since I began, and I inhale each one like they're my life force. Cause they kind of are. WOW that was a lot of words too bad I'm about to infodump about another 2 wips

Untitled Music AU (TOH, unwritten) - So I said that I come up with a 'what if every character played an instrument' AU for every fandom I'm in, and TOH is no exception. This was going to be a silly oneshot and now it's expanded into a whole multichapter universe that mostly exists only inside my brain. When I have the time to actually write it, it'll be great I'm sure lmao

But essentially Amity plays clarinet, Luz plays oboe, and they're put in the same woodwind quartet by Raine, their teacher at Hexside. This leads to them starting to become friends, but as they do, Amity starts seeing certain weird/supernatural things around school. (This is a human/no magic AU, to clarify). She thinks she's just going crazy, but she decides to confide in Luz. Luz is of course overjoyed to learn there's a potential mystery to be discovered in their school, and immediately joins Amity in playing detective. Yes I want there to be mystery in this AU, but I really have not worked out the finer details yet.

Other character roles include - Raine as Head Of Music. Lilith as their second in command in the music department - but she was also Amity's clarinet teacher until Amity was like nine/ten. One day, she suddenly dropped all of her private students and joined Hexside as a teacher instead. Why? Who knowsss! (You'll find out I promise). Eda runs the wackiest corner shop that sells Everything You'll Ever Need, and Luz is her employee and also her only oboe student. She's a longtime family friend of Camila, too. She took in Hunter, who plays bassoon, and Luz still considers Hunter her brother in this AU. Willow plays flute. She and Amity have a similar arc to canon, but it plays out a bit differently in this. And - this is my fav part - Blight Industries is a well-known company, and engage in copious amounts of rainbow capitalism every year. Meanwhile the Blight kids still genuinely have no idea if Odalia is homophobic or not.

And last but not least - the LU multichapter where Time dies and Twilight picks up the ocarina to go back in time and save his life (working title). But Time keeps dying, so Twilight keeps using the ocarina, and before he knows it he's in a Majora's Mask nightmare scenario of his own. This is one I was planning to write this summer before SWSHBTS came in and demanded attention. Lots of attention. So, I'm planning to get to this when SWSHBTS is done. I'm just so excited to write it - it's really going to push me as a writer, but I'm ready for that challenge if it means i can provide juicy Twi angst. The poor lad. I'm really going to put him through the wringer. And Time too, considering he's gonna die many times in the fic, but that's kind of just the plot.

Also I had some coffee today and it was chocolate raspberry and it was so tasty and I had it with some apple cinnamon bread that my cousin had made and it was a little stale but it's alright bc it was tasty and paired with the coffee it made delicious dessert so :)

Also while I was in the store earlier I had the WORST cramps I literally felt like I was going to fall on the floor but after a while they went away and I could enjoy the shopping again so yay I also got some bright red nail polish I haven't put it on yet but I was thinking of doing that tomorrow

I really want to get into cosmetic stuff but I never learned how to do makeup and at this point I'm too scared to ask bc anxiety of ppl making fun of me for not knowing how to do makeup is strong and that may sound stupid but hey I got issues lol but yeah I want to learn how to do makeup but I have no clue where to start or what brands to get or like anything

Also with skincare bc my skin has seen better days but I'm also too nervous to ask for help with that and I have no clue what to do for that so lol my skin is suffering

I've slowly but surely been getting my wardrobe to my current style and Ive gotten a lot more comfortable wearing shorts in public bc before I always wore pants so my legs were never shown off and I realized about last year(?) That I had gotten really self conscious about my legs even around my family but i actually wore shorts out in public yesterday when I met up with my mom and I felt so happy bc I rlly like the outfit I was wearing it was black shorts with a white shirt with yellow and blue vertical stripes and the shirt was tucked into the shorts and I felt so happy wearing it it was great I felt very very good abt myself which is good bc I am self conscious about my body a little but it's gotten a lot better recently so that's good!

okay I'm not going to go off on a tangent here on makeup/skincare recs and tips and all that unless you ask for it, but if you ever want that kind of stuff I know quite a bit about those kinds of things and I'm happy to share my wisdom! I'm not like an expert makeup artist or anything and while I hypothetically know about more intense stuff like contouring and baking your face and all that I've never actually done it, but I do know a decent amount! and I can do eyeliner really well so, there's that. and I've already made some skincare rec posts on here but I'm happy to answer more qs about that stuff if you ever desire

I'm glad you were able to feel good about your outfit!! baby steps are important for that stuff, but definitely try to branch out and wear outfits you might not normally wear! if you see an item of clothing you really like but you're self conscious about it, consider getting it any way and seeing if you can just wear it around your house for a bit to feel more confident in it before wearing it out. I used to be really self conscious about wearing tight shirts for a very specific body insecurity I have that I won't get into rn but I really love wearing crop tops so I gradually just started getting tops that were a bit tighter and it really helped my confidence

I don’t think anyone needs me to do a why-you-should-read for 2ha because I’m late af to the party, but no danmei rec is complete this year without 2ha and shizun and mo ran! I have feels okay, a lot of them!!!! Like?!! CHU WANNING?!!! So ethereal and gorgeous and deserves everything in the world, and also a shrine in my room dedicated to the beauty and grace and power that is shizun.

So here’s me trying to summarize and also delve into specific parts of 2ha as much as I can, although because I’m new to the fandom I’d say don’t take my word for it entirely XD It’s just Hao Yi XIng (Immortality) is coming out soon and we’re all gonna lost our shit, and it’s cool to have read the novel before the show comes out. This will be the first of... five parts I think to a full 2ha post, but no worries, I won’t like vomit em all out in the first week of January.

We can all agree on a shizun shrine though. Right? RIGHT?!!

Anyway with this one I’ve basically done 10 recs before 2021 approaches, so here’s the compilation:

Summary:

Emperor of the cultivation world, Taxian-jun (also known as Mo Ran or Mo Weiyu) has basically committed every sin there is and has at the point right before his death, slaughtered and killed innumerable people. The novel starts with Taxian-jun’s death as he kills himself, tired and weary of the world especially after his shizun, Chu Wanning died. He wakes up in his teenage body, in the first year he became a disciple, and decides that he has a chance to redo everything - to keep the love of his life, Shi Mei, from dying and to ensure that his cruel and hateful shizun, Chu Wanning, will not get the chance to let Shi Mei die again.

As his teenage, young self, however, as much as Mo Ran hates and resents CWN, he recalls all the times he spent with CWN in his previous life, where he made him his consort after stripping away all his cultivation and powers, wanting to punish him for not saving Shi Mei by keeping him at his side in that position. He lusts after CWN in this present timeline, remembering all the times they were in bed together, but is also conflicted about his shizun because on one hand, he hates him, but on the other hand, he can’t help but keep noticing shizun and paying attention to what he does. 

As he goes through the same events that he experienced in his first life as a disciple, Mo Ran continues to hate CWN but begins to see his actions in different light. He always thought that CWN thought him to be inferior, and that CWN was a pretentious, arrogant asshole, but as he goes through these same events with different changes (for example, he recalled sitting out of his very first mission with CWN and Shi Mei, but found himself actively involved, working together with his shizun in this present life), the time spent together allows him to better understand CWN’s actions now and also back then in their previous life when he was still a disciple.

CWN on the other hand, despite how he supposedly treats Mo Ran, actually dotes on and is very fond of Mo Ran (this was the case in the previous life, not that he has any recollection of that, and also in this life). He thinks that he is not good-looking and is undeserving of attention, concern and love, and so only knows how to quietly give and makes sacrifices without asking for anything in return. He knows that Mo Ran likes Shi Mei, and is both depressed and angry about that on his own.

As Mo Ran gets to know CWN all over again (and also hurting him here and there in the process), they reach the fated battle where CWN let Shi Mei die (in the previous life) in this life, and desperate still to keep Shi Mei from dying, he replaces Shi Mei’s role in the battle and nearly dies himself.

From then on, truths are revealed about both the previous and current timeline, and Mo Ran has to chase and woo his shizun back, all the while trying to figure out what is the mysterious force that sent him back in time to his current timeline and what danger lies ahead for him and CWN as they try to basically save the cultivation world from destruction.

0.5 refers to Taxian-Jun and Chu Wanning as Chu Fei (Consort Chu) 

1.0 refers to Mo Ran as a teenager and Chu Wanning before the events of THAT battle

2.0 is when Mo Ran becomes Mo-zongshi and the Chu Wanning then as they date properly, fall in love, all the UST etc. hahahaha

Last I heard, they were supposed to be cleared for a Feb/Mar launch this month, but the review told them to make some adjustments so it’s likely to be delayed

I mean, for good reason, because there is NO WAY you can run platonic for the live-action based on the story, and the production itself has also reassured fans that they would be doing the novel justice (and from leaks, this does seem to be the case and damn, there’s NO WAY you can go pure platonic on this one, even bromance is far-fetched)

Luo Yunxi is a god among peasants, and Chen Feiyu is cute af

Some details are definitely being changed, for e.g. CWN obviously can’t be a Consort, so he’s been relegated to the Zither Player role (but if I’m not wrong the role itself like traditionally is also half euphemism for someone who sleeps with the Emperor as well)

2.0 Mo Ran - 1.0 Chu Wanning - 2.0 Chu Wanning 

1.0 Mo Ran - 0.5 Chu Wanning - 0.5 Mo Ran

Characters:

1. 墨燃 Mo Ran - His courtesy name is 墨微雨 Mo Weiyu and in the 0.5 version he called himself 踏仙君 Taxian-jun, which literally means a king who steps on deities/cultivators (fitting, since he slaughtered a lot of them). Initially, Mo Ran actually chose CWN as his shizun because he was the best-looking, and that was possibly one of the only times someone actually chose CWN voluntarily, and for that he always had a special place in CWN’s heart. 

As Taxian-jun (0.5) he forced CWN to marry him after stripping him of his powers and cultivation, imprisoned him for basically 8 years in the palace. He kills himself a little after CWN’s death, and then wakes up as CWN’s disciple again as a young teenager. He’s the last of CWN’s three disciples, and has a big, warm and kind heart. He also obviously was very fond of his shizun before things went spiralling out of control for various reasons that will smack you in the face after you finish 311 chapters.

He’s very intelligent, having actually mastered two of the three forbidden spells of the cultivation world in the 0.5 timeline. In the 1.0 timeline, he’s obviously still pretty talented/gifted for a disciple. In his past life, his chosen weapon was a sword called Bu Gui, and then in the present 1.0 timeline, he was given a whip that is connected to CWN’s whip (i.e. they were made from the same tree and were actually one full piece together before they broke into two). He accidentally names the whip “Jian Gui”, and everyone facepalms at that.

After he and CWN get past like....some of their misunderstandings (about maybe 70%, not that they knew it then), Mo Ran becomes full on devoted to his shizun, only has eyes for his shizun, totally clear that he perhaps liked Shi Mei, but never as much as he loves shizun, which is pretty amazing.

As Mo-zongshi (2.0), he’s super ripped, and CWN totally thirsts after him too XD

Has a really sad past that will only be revealed much later, and in the present timeline he is very much doted on by his uncle and auntie, who are Xue Meng’s parents.

2. 楚晚宁 Chu Wanning - WHERE DO I EVEN START. Talented, legendary gifted cultivator with not one but THREE weapons, in which the one he uses the most is Tian Wen, the whip. He doesn’t usually use Jiu Ge, the zither weapon, or his sword, Huai Sha, unless absolutely necessary. Also called 玉衡 as a title (晚夜玉衡 in full i.e. Yu Heng of the Night Sky), and in their sect, he’s referred to as Elder Yu Heng (玉衡长老).

He has a really bad temper and takes no bullshit, and despite being really handsome, his self-esteem is down in the gutters - he thinks he’s not worthy of love and attention, and I recall in the first arc he always thought “who would love someone like me”. Because he’s so fearsome, other disciples don’t dare to talk to him or go near him, and he always eats alone, tends to his own wounds alone and basically does everything alone. No one cares about whether he’s eaten, if he’s hurt or not, etc. 

They’ve basically placed him on such a high pedestal that they forget that he’s just a person too. His bad temper also comes out usually when disciples think they can joke around with him or tease him etc. Everyone covets him in a sense that all sects want him to join them, and everyone knows him. He just takes no shit and kicks ass all the time.

Fond of Mo Ran (not romantically) when he first chooses him as his shizun when he is much younger. His romantic feelings for Mo Ran develop later, but he was first drawn to Mo Ran simply because he could feel how warm and kind Mo Ran’s soul was, and basically how he brightened up his life by not being afraid of him etc.

He does a lot of things for Mo Ran silently without him knowing, and lets Mo Ran misunderstand him on multiple occasions, knowing that even if he cleared things up, it wouldn’t change how much Mo Ran likes Shi Mei.

After the events of that single battle, in the 2.0 timeline, it’s CWN’s turn to be slightly oblivious as Mo Ran tries to care for him and woo him and let him know that he’s loved, but once they get past that, it’s so much love istg it makes you believe in love and weep all at the same time.

3. 师眛 Shi Mei - Beautiful gorgeous Shi Mei who is Mo Ran’s love and who he is fighting to keep alive in the 1.0 timeline. Shi Mei’s cultivation is in the direction of healing, and thus the way he trains is different from how the rest of them trains. He’s very respectful and considerate to his shizun, and is also the person Mo Ran thinks treats him the best. Mo Ran loves his special spicy wontons as well ;-;

4. 薛蒙 Xue Meng - Mo Ran’s younger cousin who in the 0.5 timeline hates him for taking shizun away and for killing his parents. In 1.0, he just detests Mo Ran and calls him a dog all the time. He’s been spoilt as the only child of his parents, and is also expected to take over the sect one day from his father. This gives him a bit of a complex XD He’s considered a little brash and impulsive, and definitely a little narcissistic as he thinks he’s the best looking so far, but he’s pretty much kind underneath all the preening. Has a huge sense of justice, and all he cares about are the people closest to him and his family. He also worships shizun a lot and always wants his attention, which shizun will give depending on the situation.

5. 梅寒雪／梅含雪 Mei Han Xue & Mei Han Xue - This ain’t a typo hahaha these two brothers’ names are pronounced exactly the same but the character for ‘Han’ is different. One of them is flamboyant and a playboy, another is a little stoic and serious, with the latter always cleaning up after the former while the former breaks the hearts of women all over the region. They don’t feature very prominently in the first arc and come out more in 2.0 onwards, but it’s good to note that the both of them are possibly Xue Meng’s closest friends in both the 0.5 and 2.0 timelines, and after.

My Favourite Arcs & Moments:

The 1.0 arc is the most fun, I have to say - The plot isn’t as complicated yet then, and all you have is Mo Ran being his rebellious, horny teenager self going against shizun and also being confused by how much he wants shizun etc. 

Xia Sini arc - There’s the arc where CWN becomes a kid version of himself in size due to injuries where he’s called Xia Sini, and masquerades as a junior in the sect while he’s in that form - He also forms a bond with Mo Ran in that form, as Mo Ran seems to take a liking to this cute younger junior who acts like an adult

Hell arc - I will not give any spoilers but damn it was both hilarious and also my heart died at the same time

Farming arc - Everyone who has read 2ha knows of farming arc in 2.0 timeline, because we get two idiots thirsting quite obviously for each other, and also Mo Ran half naked all the time while shizun not quite deciding whether he wants to cover him up or stare at him for longer

The huge reveal arc - This one ripped my heart out, stomped on it, and then went for my eyes because I was crying so hard and for two days straight. The painful and devastating part is when Meatbun FINALLY links all the missing parts together and connects all the arcs and you’re literally slapped in the face with new revelations and a totally new understanding of what happened in 0.5 and 1.0 and then you wanna slap yourself too because now you’ve done it, you’re in this fandom, you’re in this black hole and your heart and brain and soul hurt

In terms of moments, I frickin died at the part where 1.0 Mo Ran first gets his whip and there’s a rule where whatever you say after you hold onto the weapon has to be the weapon’s name - And because I think Mo Ran trips or something, he said “Ah shit!” = “啊，见鬼” - And he inadvertently named his whip the equivalent of damn it/shit/crap basically, while everyone including shizun was like “damn it you stupid dog”

1.0 Shizun getting flashbacks from 0.5 and thinking that it’s just because he’s too horny and sinful and that’s why he’s dreaming of sex with a different Mo Ran like that (but it’s not, they actually happened in 0.5)

When Xia Sini waits for Mo Ran to have dinner with chicken soup he cooked and Mo Ran abandoned him to go find Shi Mei, and then ate up all the soup by himself without realizing that Xia Sini hadn’t eaten yet because he was waiting for him. Xia Sini says he’s a person too, he gets hungry, he hurts, etc. and I was like SHIZUNNNNNNNNN!!!!!

The fact that CWN is an idiot at life in general like cleaning or cooking or anything else - even 1.0 Mo Ran before he understood CWN was like “how the hell is he still alive”

FIREWORKS MOMENT y’all!!! It fulfils the unrequited love angst but also a bit of resolution, and from the leaks of the live-action drama for THIS VERY MOMENT we are all gonna die

WHEN MO RAN KNEELS DOWN IN FRONT OF SHIZUN!!!! 

I also liked it when CWN seemed surprised and also proud at all that Mo Ran had achieved as Mo-zongshi later

My Thoughts:

Whew. If you made it down here, I’m tempted to give you a hug, because damn if 2ha is the most gigantic danmei novel I’ve read so far in terms of number of chapters, number of arcs, number of confusing timelines and going back and forth, in terms of also the depth of plot and richness in character and world building.

As I mentioned in this other post, at 2ha’s core, it’s s a story about loving someone so much you would do anything for him, about family and the sacrifices you make for your loved ones, about finding a home when it seems like there is no place for you. You get uncomfortable at the thought of the bad sides to human nature, and you really question morality and what is right and wrong. You get sad because a lot of things were both unavoidable but also avoidable if only one thing or event was different, and everything else which happens after that is a direct consequence of those actions, whether right or wrong. It’s Mo Ran and Chu Wanning making painful decisions at every crucial moment, even if they know it’ll end badly, if only to keep the other safe (278 fuck my life!!!!).

It’s not an overstatement to say that reading 2ha will change your life (well it’ll definitely make you cry a lot and then your eyes are so swollen and you get so traumatized with angsty books even if they come with a happy ending - also you may end up with a side effect of being kind of reluctant or wary to read anything else from Meatbun) - I honestly haven’t read any novel so far quite like 2ha, objectively, not that it’s better than any other novel or that this should trump any of your other faves, but the mastery Meatbun displays in 2ha is on a whole different level. It’s certainly an out-of-body experience, almost. 

Every detail and plot point is useful, you don’t get a huge unnecessary filler out of nowhere (okay.. maybe... farming arc but no one is complaining), details that seem irrelevant especially with side characters come to slap you in the face a lot of chapters later, and then you realize there’s an even deeper layer to the story.

Regarding the Trigger Warnings & Debate:

Hoooooo boy. I don’t want to get into this argument, but I would like to address some misconceptions anyway because I can see fandom drama over this already in the days leading up to HYX and the days after. 

Firstly, do check out the 2ha carrd above where OP has helpfully listed all the trigger warnings. 

If you’re uncomfortable with reading any of those, that’s perfectly fine and readers can totally avoid books that have any hint of those trigger warnings. You absolutely have the right to do that, you can totally ignore and blacklist 2ha for those reasons. 

The debate arises (mostly) from people who have not read it but want to diss it based on the trigger warnings alone, saying that Meatbun glorifies what Mo Ran did in 0.5, and that readers who like 2ha are fetishizing the tropes presented. 

This is like trying to argue against a full thesis by only reading the abstract. Moreover, I do find the treatment of 2ha unfair, especially when other media (Western forms as well, erm... GoT?) display the same tropes and trigger warnings without people getting into ridiculous arguments about it. 

Meatbun does write that she finds all his actions as 0.5 deplorable, firstly. The second is that there was like a 30% contributing factor to his behaviour, none of which excuses what he did and the acts themselves. The point of this is how Mo Ran knows it’s wrong 1.0 onwards, and how he grovels and redeems himself after, and even though he redeems itself, it’s never said that what he did as 0.5 is okay or acceptable. And even after he redeems himself, pays for his mistakes and the truth is revealed etc., the acts of 0.5 are still deplorable on its own, they don’t go away just because he’s sort of reformed and changed his mind on shizun etc.

But anyway, aside from this, happy reading!! Cry with me pls hahaha and gosh once again I’m a newbie to the fandom so do not take my word entirely for it!
