What I don't get is why people think it's problematic to still wish for Buddie. Like isn't it worse to be happy just because he's with a dude now. Like so you didn't ship Buddie for their amazing chemistry and history, you just shipped them because they were two hot dudes.

(This is not directed at people who are enjoying Tevan for the ride, this is about people who jumped completely)

((obviously bi Buck is important, but I don't think seeing it as a step towards Buddie is bad. We've been waiting for something like this for so many years))

The fact that so many people genuinely just wanted buck to end up with a dude is just

Look there is wanting representation which I GET I am all for

Then there is not caring about anything to do with that representation as long as you see two hot guys kiss

Representation without substance, meaning and actually changing what we usually see on screen is just so surface level

and listen we are ALL guilty of that thing where we hear about a show with a queer couple and we instantly get excited and rush over there but some of these people don’t give a shit about the storylines as a whole, the characters as a whole, character development, etc all those things that make representation MATTER

Like we aren’t just happy that bi buck is canon because oh look here’s a bi man character

No we are happy because we got to see his development we got to see his insecurities, history, his personality and his bond with these other characters through the years. Now look I’m not saying oh look at this fictional character think about his feelings, I’m saying that characters and their complexities drive a story they are what make me invested whether it’s a book a movie or show, and to not care about any of that just for the sake of tokenism is insane to me

I also feel it bares mentioning that this is one of the RARE times that this representation in media isn’t a case of tokenism like they’ve taken a character and built him and built the show and built the dynamics outside of his sexuality and made it canon in season SEVEN like Tim and Oliver and the entire team did something we don’t see much or ANY of in media like the way they made it is like we have this journey with the character like it’s a double blind test ( sorry I’m revising for a psych exam rn and my brain can only use that analogy) and until the reveal seven years in we don’t know for sure even if there have been inklings and people are more focused on the fact that oh look some hot dude kisses another in this show

Like genuinely ship what you want to ship and enjoy the time but don’t disregard meaningful potential representation which would have 1. A character navigating sexuality in a situation as complex as Eddie’s 2. A gay couple which wasn’t planned and they actually listened to fans for 3. A well done queer slow burn with the same gravity and meaningfulness that straight slowburns get

The problem with coming out narratives in the Big Two is they’re unrelatable. Being out doesn’t give you rizz. You want me to believe Tim Drake got a man? Without at least 50+ issues of awkward flirting, not-flirting, replaying conversations in his head, and two assassination attempts? This is capeshit. Where’s 20 issues of Aunt May trying to set up Peter with MJ before she even appears in the story? Catwoman making a hobby out of crashing Bruce’s nightly patrol. The queers don’t even get ethical constipation over dating with such a risky lifestyle? Iceman isn’t constantly striking out at the club? Iceman, whose personality is fumbling the bag?

Sabertooth and Wolverine trying to disembowel each other has more chemistry than 90% of gay makeout sessions published by DC and Marvel. “Yay gay rep!” Having a crush feels like the end of the world, superheroes save the world, narrative psychology. Where’s the will-they won’t-they and dramatic declarations of love? Where’s Betsy in a tea towel ambushing the object of her affection and being a generally messy hoe? Give us something.

SUCH DIFFICULT CHOICES.

Okay let me start by saying that, unfortunately for her, Javi x Tim x reader isn't even my ideal sandwich for that WIP. (That's not to say I don't love those three together though!) To me, this is the real MVP sandwich of that fic:

Tim Rockford x Javier Peña x Marcus Pike. I mean, I hope you're ready...

Then sometime in May next year, there's a Frankie Morales x Benny Miller x reader sandwich coming up for @rhoorl (which I think I mentioned here the other day? but my memory is shit so maybe I only mentioned it in a spiral squad evening on Discord, haha).

At some point I'll also get to writing a Javier Peña x Judy Moncada x reader sandwich one shot (first FFM fic, yay!). I'm looking forward to that one because that should be a trip - and yes, it's definitely going to be part hate fucking. (And lucky for me, I know that this one is definitely NOT gonna be more than just a one shot - unlike several WIPs that totally escalated) Thanks for the hyping on this one @legendary-pink-dot <3

I haven't taken any official notes for this yet, but I am planning a Dieter Bravo x Javier Gutierrez fic which I suspect may end up becoming more than just a one shot (hopefully it'll stay contained as a very short series, we'll see what happens). In that case, I'm pretty sure that there will also be a Dieter x Javi G x male original character or male!reader chapter (👀 @sin-djarin I know I haven't said anything about this yet because it was just a passing thought, but the vague idea for it *exists*)

But honestly?

Yeah, Santi x Frankie x reader is hands down my absolute favorite sandwich. For SO many reasons. It's how they actually pushed Tim x Javi aside, because they wanted to be the first fic I posted. What can I say - I have a really big soft spot for all three of them. Plus, y'know - Santi and Frankie, that's pretty much canon IMO, just look at Triple Frontier. <3

Thank you for asking and letting me yap about my sandwich love! Honestly, it's not like I only like threesome fics, or even that I intend to only write those (for example, there definitely is an Ezra x Marcus Pike WIP outline! And there's not going to be a sandwich pairing in there) - but, you know. There are so many fucking fantastic writers out there who write all kinds of pairings so beautifully, and I totally love that. I want to add something of myself and the things I care about to that.

Personally I'm a sucker for representation because I think it's super important for everybody to be able to see themselves reflected in fic, and even to just see the diversity of gender, sexuality, intimacy and all kinds of relationships. So bi, gay, lesbian and queer characters, as well as polyamorous relationships, really have been part of my fic ideas from the beginning - particularly because there are a lot fewer of those than straight male x female couple fics in the Pedro verse. I’m glad that you and others are here for that sandwich love ❤️🥪

Hi, love your blog, this became kinda long sorry 😅

I just wanted to say that maybe it’s just me but I’ve never really had hope for buddie to be confirmed in the first place. Like I do ship them and if they did become canon I would be very happily surprised but really it’s just never something I’ve entertained as a possibility because we just don’t get ships like this imo. There’s a few exceptions even if I can’t think about this right now but when a character’s introduced as straight or nothing has been said so usually assumed straight and then fandom ships them with an equally assumed straight person the show and networks and all that don’t want them together because they’re ‘normal straight people’.

Like in LS from the beginning TK’s introduced with a bf he wants to propose to, they don’t lose their ‘normal’ character (obvs it is normal to be whatever flavour of queer you are but idk how to word it better) since that was him from the start.

Also if it’s acknowledged that all the buddie moments were building up to a romantic relationship then it sheds light on other similar relationships in other shows or films that we were ridiculed for shipping when really it’s not so different. I really don’t know if I got my point across here and I’m sorry this got so long winded, maybe I’m just a cynic but I think my buddie dreams will have to be contented with fanfiction.

Btw I don’t mean this to be mean to you or anyone who does believe buddie will go canon in the show I just accidentally typed out this rant that was meant to be a short ask.

So, I fully agree with everything you said. I've mentioned before that there are almost no slow burns for mlm couples on TV. A part of that is that shows need to show they meet the diversity quota from the start. So we tend to get either pre-established same sex couples (like Henren), or quick burns, where we know from the start where this is going (like Mavid and Tarlos). Even if we have a character assumed straight that's gonna be discovered to be something else (gay or, more rarely, bi), that will be something we the audience will discover pretty early on. Shows don't like rocking the boat, they don't like threatening audiences' sense of security when it comes to sexual orientation. But there are exceptions! BIG round of applause to Black Sails for being the most brilliant about it with men, if we expand to women, I can also point to Callie Torres and Erica Hahn on Grey's Anatomy, who were both introduced as straight, became best friends and then slowly, realized they were into each other. Callie figured out she was bi, while Erica was hit by a realization she was always gay, she just didn't know she was because until she was with a woman, she couldn't tell something was missing in her r/s with men.

My point isn't to convince you, BTW! I think it is SUPER legit if you don't think Buddie is going canon. It is SUPER legit to think they are. It is SUPER legit to be confused, unsure, go back and forth or not give a damn. Wherever you're at, I support you, and I think your enjoyment in fandom is what matters! I also think you specifically have a slight advantage: if you don't need Buddie going canon and they do, then yay, right? But if they don't, you won't be disappointed. You'll be able to continue to enjoy the show and Buddie, same as before. It's a part of why I try not to get my expectations up, even though I do hope for canon!Buddie. 'Coz I wanna be able to enjoy their love story no matter what. Whatever Tim and Kristen do, Buddie is canon to me. And I don't want anyone taking that away from me. So while I tend to think 911 may have the balls to be one of the few exceptions, I'll be here even if it doesn't.

At the end of the outfronts, Tim said something about surprising (I think it's the last answer). I know it was very vague, but do you have any thoughts on this?

i went back and went to the end of the interview and took down the quote to reflect on, bc i couldn’t remember what you were talking about from this morning, but if you mean after the interviewer congratulates him on season 4, then here goes haha. here is the quote for y’all seeing this, you’re welcome:

“and i think for us it’s always about trying to up the stakes on bigger music and better songs and more inclusive storytelling. and i think that [with shows like heartstopper] it just gives us more confidence to keep portraying these characters in surprising, but i think ultimately beautiful and hopeful ways. so we just feel super lucky and excited.”

I mean I agree with you, it’s definitely vague. But the whole interview was super incredibly vague and mostly implying stuff rather than giving things away so that’s okay. We can still extrapolate because why not at this point haha.

I’ll say this. Tim said here that he wants to keep portraying the characters in surprising but beautiful and hopeful ways. He said in his BNTE D23 interview that this season dives more into themes of queer identity.

So, given context… I think that “surprising” aspect potentially lends to the idea of a character (or characters), potentially (and maybe more likely due to the fact he calls it a surprise) ones we’ve seen like- in m/f relationships, going on this journey of self discovery and embracing queer identity for themselves. embracing this like- change that can be slow or sudden, like i think it was Julia talked about in the outfront panel.

Technically, it could be any character on the show. But chances are, it’s someone on the panel, just for the reason that that makes the most sense, and if we take that as a fact then it’s either Big Red or Ashlyn or both. I think if Maddox is queer, she’ll already be out and comfortably out. Especially given I don’t think any of the new characters this season are coming back due to the summer camp setting (particularly with the camp being in California, I just don’t anticipate them trying to give that sort of story to someone we only spend eight episodes with. And having a new character we’ve never met before go on that journey isn’t a surprise so much as just- like cool yay more representation.

Before today, if you told me Big Red was having a coming out storyline this season I’d be confused and surprised, given his role is reduced this season, but I mean Tim did say that Seb had a memorable role to play this season, just that the season was different and he’d have less screentime. Soooo maybe Seb helps Big Red come to terms with his burgening sexuality since they’re both not at camp? Idk. I definitely don’t think that’s what’s actually going to happen. But in case it does I need this written down so I can scream about it later.

Someone’s getting a coming out storyline, or at very least a self discovery storyline related to their identity in this sense, even if they don’t come out until season 4 (which I think is also totally possible, but we’ll see).

It could be anyone, like I say. But after today I think it’s either Ashlyn (which makes more sense to me prior to this morning), or Big Red (after that panel I’m very of the mind this is quite likely).

quick note, this last section is entirely just me ruminating on concepts i thought of rather than things i think we will see. please don’t think i’m predicting this, just- mulling over things in my brain.

I think the most unfortunate thing, if it is Big Red’s story, is that if it happens this season, given he’s a guest and she’s a series regular, his story may largely happen play out as it’s attached to hers, and I personally don’t love that. Just because he’s playing a smaller part, it kinda doesn’t lend itself to him having his own full arc for the season, so it’ll be tied into the bigger plot by a series regular. And chances are by virtue of their relationship that person will be Ashlyn. The last thing I want to see is them making Big Red discovering his sexuality about Ashlyn and how she feels about it, and I think if they do it this season that’d a very easy out to get the story more involved in the main camp plot. I know she’d support him but I just don’t want this like- supportive but anxious Ashlyn worrying over what this means for their relationship. If they’re going to thread Big Red coming out / coming to terms with his sexuality in through Ashlyn, I’d much rather it be in a wow look at us we’re both discovering ourselves way (and maybe we also get an Ashlyn discovering her sexuality storyline) than a oh my gosh I’m obviously happy for him but also I’m Ashlyn so I’m anxious because what if he breaks up with me way.

I’d be very happy to see a bi Big Red. We know that’s how Larry sees the character, just as Julia sees Ashlyn as pan. I just hope they do a nice job at playing the story out if that is indeed where they’re going with this “surprising” way of portraying these characters. And I do trust Tim and the writers, I do... But my brain isn’t very nice sometimes and I think of these concepts that I dislike and here we are.

I tried to preorder DC Pride but I guess Canadian shops had a different cut off date because it wasn't available. I was able to preorder the Tim Drake special, though, and they are setting aside the hardcover release of the 2021 edition which I'm going to go pick up in a day or two. Yay for queer friendly comic shops.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS OF YOUNG JUSTICE: DARK CRISIS 5

....yeah, I’m fine with it, for the most part.

I understand the critique being made. It might be a little sloppy in the execution, some of Mickey’s talking points hit a bit too close to home for reasonable critiques of how these particular characters have been treated over the years especially since YJ has a heavily LGBTQ fanbase who’ve long hoped that YJ would be ALLOWED to be more inclusive, but I can tell Mickey is meant to represent the toxic mindset that prioritizes cis het white fuckboys’ preferences above the opinions of the diverse fanbase Young Justice actually has.

At least, that’s what I think it’s driving at. Like, I think Tim being queer is playing a big role here. Look how Tim coming out split the overall DC fanbase at large when it first happened. I don’t see it a lot, because I’m on tumblr where majority opinion is pretty much YAY BI TIM! but I still see the youtube comments trying to pretend their distaste for Tim’s “sexuality retcon” has nothing to do with homophobia and that it’s “just not canon” - sucks to suck, man, it IS canon now.

That’s what this comic is MEANT to be critiquing, I think. And like, Mickey is WRONG about Young Justice being what he wants them to be. He’s trying to MAKE them be versions of themselves they NEVER were. Whether you thought that was obvious enough (or if I’m just full of shit, lol), is up to you.

On to commenting on individual panels.

I LOVE Tim struggling to identify himself with the minority group. Identifying as queer is NEW to Tim, and it’s hard to let go of your privledge, especially when you fly under the radar. Tim’s a cis white man who’s identified as straight for a long time - he’s just not used to being subjected to homophobia or microagressions. He’s long been an ally, but he’s just not used to saying “I” yet in this context, and I love that little inclusion.

YES, VERY GOOD!

...yeah, I don’t like this. I hate that Cassie is my least favorite part of this series, but she’s kinda unreasonable. For one, like, why is Bart apologizing at all? HE wasn’t fooled. And Tim and Kon had their suspicions as well, even if they WERE somewhat fooled. And why does Cassie ASSUME they were fooled? And even if they were, how does she know they weren’t under some form of influence to think it was her? There’s just a lot of assumptions Cassie’s making here, and while Cassie can be abrasive at times, this comic isn’t really selling me on the idea that Cassie’s been done dirty over the years. Cassie HAS been done dirty over the years, but this comic doesn’t make me too sympathetic. The girls have been written all over the place, sort of similar to how Kon’s been up and down as well, and it’s just... WEIRD for a comic so concerned with feminism to do its own gals dirty like that when THEY WEREN’T EVEN IN THE FUCKED UP WORLD.

I’ve seen that Anita will be showing up soon, and I’m kinda fucking NERVOUS about it, because if this is how Cissie and Cassie are written, what are they gonna do to poor Nita?

So, as per my notes above, I think Tim being queer is playing a big part in Mickey’s... eveything. Because HIS perfect (racist, sexist, homophobic) world was BEFORE Tim came out. Now one of his “heroes” is intrinsically changed from what he wants him to be. He’s been trying to FORCE Tim to be the straight-presenting 14-year-old he used to be, but Tim’s not cooperating, so the world really DOES have it out for him. Bart, for all HE’S not cooperating, is still pretty much what Mickey expects him to be, only he’s eaten a library since then so he’s not “the dumb one” like he expects. And Kon is... Kon is having a crisis, ok, but he loves his friends.

An Origin Story.

I'm maybe about halfway through Tim Hitchcock's English Sexualities, 1700-1800 which is not a terribly long book, and I've already bookmarked about 36 citations I intend to follow up on after I finish reading. So begins the journey. The pandemic has done strange things to all of us. Besides a heinous case of long COVID that left me on the couch for a year, family crises, and now an uncertain future in terms of where I'll be living next... it also brought me one hell of a Youtube habit. I'd already been a Buzzfeed Unsolved fan, but when that ran out I branched out into true crime more generally (don't worry I'm also watching Watcher, and yes Ghost Files rules). From there I branched out into aviation and engineering disasters, then into more general weird creepy real-life shit and internet lore. Internet lore somehow led me to mythical and religious lore, and from there I ended up finding Dr. Justin Sledge and Esoterica (if you like learning about the history of mysticism and the occult, you need to subscribe to his channel RIGHT NOW it's so dope). Dr. Sledge collaborated with Atun-Shei on a film adaptation of King James' Daemonologie and when I watched it, I realized I needed to binge everything on this dude's channel. Something about Andy's work is just so deeply, unapologetically, inspiringly weird. Not sure how this works, but I think it broke the seal on some kind of cursed artifact in my brain. And THEN I found his collabs with Brandon F.—which, in addition to the joys of ho-yay have also rekindled my childhood love for the material culture of the 18th century.

I was a strange child growing up (FFS I'm on Tumblr, of course I was a strange child growing up...). Being neurodivergent, queer, and not-especially-binary in a conservative household meant I learned early on to shut up about who I was and what I liked as a matter of survival. Something about the excessive, sensual aesthetic of 18th century Europe calls to a lot of people, clearly, but oh boy did it call to me back then when I was suffocating under the weight of my parents' hopelessly unrealistic, hopelessly boring expectations.

I've heard people talk about the fear/awe-to-kink and comfort-to-kink pipelines, and I think it was a bit of both for me. I got really engrossed in reading about the AWI during elementary school and the images of the Founding Fathers and the Redcoats somehow got lodged in my brain a little sideways. Inevitably, you get a little older and more capable of comprehending how much war sucks and how many sins these countries have to answer for, and FFS why are we being loaded up with a bunch of bullshit propaganda instead of the far more sobering and relevant actual history, etc. But I'm still just fascinated by the 18th century and especially by what we don't talk about when it comes to that time period. What sorts of fascinating and queer possibilities did later generations try to retcon out of their own culture? What sorts of narratives have we missed out on?

What I'm trying to say is that watching Brandon F. and friends do a takedown of Jimchi's Redcoat ASMR video brought up a whole bunch of feels and it sent me on a quest to understand myself better. That's really it.

Random Batman Thought

So, it's kinda weird that the Joker's not officially LGBT? He's been queer-coded forever, has quite possibly the most Foe Yay energy in comics, and I can think of at least two notable and influential out-of-canon works (DKR and Morrison's Arkham Asylum) where he's been explicitly presented as flirting with Batman, and I'm pretty sure he's been flirty with Bats in a bunch of times in canon as well.

Plus, of course, back when they were "together" he was frequently shown to be largely indifferent to Harley's attempts at seduction.

Basically, there's way more evidence of his being into other dudes than there ever was for, say, Tim Drake, so how come it hasn't been made official yet?

The long awaited money just dropped on my bank account. Yay, I won't starve anymore when I'm stuck with no bus and I can start making donations again! Catching up with you, haters.

Also, I'm starting to make a Thing™ :

(I painted red bands around it to discreetly remind of the radfem flag's color scheme. Maybe I'll put the full ass flag in the future, but I'm somehow more careful about TRAs violence than random straight men's. One of the only feminist & lesbian bar in Brittany was already threatened and shut down by TRAs on bs accusations of transphobia. What happened is that the butch owner manhandled TIMs harrassing young lesbians who politely refused their advances and a major libfem organisation (Nous Toutes) listened to TIMs whining about it and targeted the lesbian bar, which then received death threats and got vandalized when there were customers in. The bar wasn't even radfem, it openly said it was for "all sexual tendencies", the TIMs just genuinely harrassed the women with the support of a gay men bar in this city. So we're not safe even here.)

Hopefully it won't attract more strange men hitting on me. I however hope that this in-your-face shit WILL attract some strange & useless lesbian/bi women who also need neon signs that a woman isn't straight before considering hitting on them (I know I do). Time to make the local lesbians feel less isolated in this rural area! I know that it might've helped me to come out earlier if I had seen a gnc woman being openly lesbian when I was younger and maybe I would've been less sucked in the "queer" pipeline, which is much more visible, if I had found a lesbian community locally.

(For those wondering, the muguet thing is a play with word saying "a sprig/bit gay", "gay" in the feminine French form. Then I think you can guess the other is "antivaxx = eugenism", because I'm tired to pretend the assholes who don't wear masks when sick, don't vaccinate themselves and care only about not being contaminated but don't have a care about immuno compromised people don't piss me off. This is a wip, I'll add more bands and shits when these first customisations will be dry)

The Magnus Archives is too fancy a name for Moldy Pencil’s het dudebro target audience, so instead it’s something simple and kinda stupid like Fearhunter, because oh yeah instead of exploring the fucked up implications of monster hunters who murder things for a living, this is now a monster of the week show, JoHn is an avatar of The Hunt who’s parents were killed by Jude (and there’s gross emphasis on it being in part because Jude is a lesbian, yay representation) So now Jon works for an underground network of hunters (who aren’t viscous monsters because the hunt is the only moral entity!) including Martin, who instead of sasha, is the computer guy, and also the token fat comedy relief character, Sasha is the sexy love interest who can fight because she had 7 brothers, but seems to always be the one who needs saving by JoHn, and Tim is JoHn’s cousin or something but the fans ignore it and JoHnTim is the most popular ship in the fandom, oh yeah the fandom, Moldy Pencil was aiming for middle aged men but instead got a fanbase of queer teenagers, and a few seasons in they start openly making fun of the fandom within the actual show with gay jokes (yay) and because this show has no nuance the big big bad is Elias but instead of Jon working for him, he’s the king of the monsters, and probably gay coded, probably makes a joke about wanting to do it with JoHn, to his het dismay. JoHn is a manly man man who sleeps with every woman that ever shows up, and dies many many many times and always comes back, after s3 we’re introduced to Oliver Banks (and he’s probably “deathly pale” in this version bc poc protagonists on this kinda show are a rare find) instead of the nuance of the end, he’s a grim reaper who can raise the dead, and saves JoHn because “life and death have big plans for him” and JoHniver immediately becomes the most popular ship and the producers drag out a will they won’t they over 11 seasons in which the world almost ends every other season, and at the very end Oliver confesses his love to JoHn and immediately goes to super mega ultra hell for being a homo, only for JoHn to die of tetanus one week later, oh and Tim has a slaughter arc in the first few seasons and then it’s never brought up again. This has been an obvious dis on supernatural with a blend of other shitty tropes, I hope you hated reading this as much as I hated writing this

Gonna preface this by saying yes absolutely I one hundred percent agree with this ask.

But I am also going a bit insane right now so excuse the following:

I want bi Tim so bad but I am also kind of going AAAAAAHHHH did you have to break them up to do that? Not the female character being tossed aside when she's served her purpose of helping the male character 'discover' something about himself. DC WOULD NEVER

I'm miffed that it occured off screen. I think their relationship deserves more care than that. I think Steph deserves a voice when the relationship ends. Maybe we'll see more over the summer what happened.

But queer Tim is something I would like to see.

Also Dick. Enough about Tim where's Dick's turn come on DC don't tell me you'll only confirm one of the boys when Dick Grayson is right there you do it do it do it.

On a purely selfish note - I have written a lot (understatement) on TimSteph over the years. If Tim is gay (which will be a good thing in my eyes) I will still feel a bit like... idk. Hollow. Seven years of shipping. Talk about missing the mark huh? MY LIFE IS A LIE

I have nothing coherent to say (see blog title) essentially. Yay queer Tim but no wait come back with ma TimSteph. I am (selfishly) hoping for bi, but if he is gay... he went for another blond? Tim likes blondes is the real takeaway here -

If Tim's bi, I'll continue to write for them. AUs and all that. If he's confirmed to be gay, I'm afraid that'll be it from me for those two. I'll finish my current story and let that be that. I was joking with @thatblondeperson that it was because I literally finally managed to write a bonking scene for the pair in my fic (not too explicit but you know. It's actually important to the story) and God turned around and said nay there will be no bumping of uglies and I was like argh fuck. But me and Sofie had like two or three fics were gonna write together like a what if Steph stayed with Dean and kept her baby girl fic and it was gonna be depressing and soft and romantic af and I WAS GONNA WRITE THAT MERMAID FIC AHHHHHHHHHHHH

Currently going through the five stages of grief like totally normal and healthy people do. This is so embarassing but I just keep laughing at myself like bloody hell Abigail you're an adult let it go.
