Chapter 5
unknown visitor
I got up and got ready for school. These past few days have been weird. Turns out there were no birds at Wayne Enterprise now I feel like I wasted Batman time. I walked down stairs and ate breakfast. Bruce had to go to work early because there was a problem he had to fix. After I ate breakfast.
Jason drove me off at school. When I was dropped off. I went to my homeroom class. I sat down in an empty seat, pulled out my notebook and just drew. I thought about the jester and what happened that night. The Jester seemed lonely. I wish I could talk to him more. The bell rang and everyone went to their seats. "Good morning everyone!" Miss Honey said. "I hope you had a good weekend. Today we got a new friend with us, why don't you come up and introduce yourself." Miss Honey said. I got up and walked to the front of the class, "Hi my name is Alex Wilson" I said.
I walked to my set and seat back down.
I didn't want anyone to know that I'm part of the Wayne family so no one would just want to be my friend because I'm Bruce Wayne's daughter. Classes were really boring. I tried paying attention but I couldn't. Too much was on my mind. Time went by, then I had Social studies, then math. Then PE, I like PE classes. It was fun, but there was a kid who would just look at me and wave. He seemed friendly but I wasn't sure. After PE there was science class. In science class the same kid in PE sat next to me. His hair was brown and he had hazel eyes. His hazel eyes reminded me of The Jester. When it was lunchtime I got my lunch box, walked to the lunch room and sat by myself and ate my ppj. "Is it ok if I sit with you?" I looked over and it was the boy that sat with me in Science class."Sure." I said.
He sat down. He had a Batman lunch box. "Nice lunch box." I said. "Thanks, he's my favorite superhero. I would do anything to meet him in person." He said looking at his lunch box. "You know Batman is pretty cool in person." I said without thinking. He looked at me with the same joy I saw before at the flower shop or maybe it was the hazel eyes throwing me off. "You met The Batman?" He said. "Yea, I met him a couple of times." I said. "Amber Gears." He said, putting his hand out. "Alex Wilson." I said, shaking his hand. My stomach started turning when he said Gears, but people can have the same last name even if they are not related.
"Hey Alex I know you're new here so if you have any questions just ask me." Amber said. It was nice having a new friend. I just hope that this will not end like how me and Jun stopped being friends. "Hey you!" I looked over and saw a girl with dark brown hair that was in braids and the ends of her hair were bleached. She wore heavy makeup. "Alex, right? So if you want you can sit with me and some other people if you want." She said, She was very friendly. "Thank you but maybe tomorrow?" I said. She was very surprised it was like no one declined her offer before. "Well ok then." Then She walked away with her face being a little red. "Holy cow, that was Clover Starway!" Amber said. "Who?" "Clover Starway, she is the most popular girl in school and the most kind and beautiful girl in school." Amber said with his face turning a little bit red. It made me wonder if Amber had a crush on Clover?
After we finished eating lunch, me and Amber kept on talking until we got in the classroom. Amber invited me to go to the comic book store. I told him I would have to call my brother, Jason and ask if I could, because he's the one picking me up from school. I told Jason and he said he wanted to go to the comic book store as well. I told him sure. The thing is I have never been to a comic book store but my dad would tell me stories about the super hero mostly about Batman and how he would stop this group of thieves. It was almost like dad was there, maybe fighting alongside Batman. After school we got picked up and drove to the comic book store. We found a place to park and got out. We walked in and Amber looked everywhere and I just browsed around. I didn't find anything that interests me, but Amber found some comics that he likes reading. The comic book was about a hero who was very smart Technology and could hack into any. It seems like Amber looked up to this comic book hero. After the comic book store we drove to "Bod Auto mechanics". It turned out he lives with his uncle who was a Mechanic. We walked into the car shop. "Uncle I'm here!" Amber said. There was no response. Amber looked a little worried. "Uncle I'm here!" Amber said again. "Uncle?" He then ran into the area where the cars would be worked on. There were some tools on the ground and a hat with the word "Bob" on the hat. Amber picked up the hat and held it. "This is my uncle's hat, he doesn't go anywhere without it." He said. I looked around and saw a robin feather. "Jason?" I said looking at him. He walked over to me and I showed him the Robin feather. "He was here."

The downfall
(Just a little warning before we start. If you are reading this for some reason I want to let you know, there’s mention of consuming drugs and depression/synthons of mental illness in this series. So please if you feel like you can get triggered by any of those topics, please don’t read)

1
As his hand reached for the switch of the lamp on the nightstand he knocked down the old sketchbook that had been occupying space next to an empty bottle of pills and a half empty glass of water, it would be surprising if he didn’t knock down the glass and the bottle too.
James finally managed to turn the lamp on, which made him squint his eyes before the blinding light. It wasn’t even that bright, it was dim and almost inexistent since the had put a pair of his underwear on top so it would provide less light. But he stayed out of the sun or any kind of light for most days, so the slightest ray of sunshine or artificial light bothered him.
Things had been rough for the past few years, but during holidays everything became ten times harder and since Jazz had arrived he just felt like not leaving his bed. Don’t get him wrong, he loves his sister to death, but changes, as small as that one was, were a whole deal for the young boy.
Jazz had been trying to get him out of bed since he decided he was better there, what she didn’t know was that her attempts only made him want to say in more. This made it easier for him to change his schedule. Sleep during the day, get out and wasted at night.
The getting wasted part was a recent thing, for the past year or so he had been sneaking out of the house at night to meet with Stella - back in high school she was known for being the main provider of anything illegal you could ask for. Even if it was hard to believe for James, some things still remained the same, Stella’s business was one of those.
That is where our boy was heading to, Stella’s basement. Surprisingly enough the girl had taken him under her wing, meaning she liked hanging out with him and since James wasn’t just going to take whatever she gave her to bring it home, he stayed in her basement for the night either drinking or taking whatever new pills Stella had - in the hopes that doing that would give him a few minutes of complete silence, away from everything and everyone. That was what James was seeking, the feeling of the world going quiet.
“Heard your siblings are back home” Stella was sitting on the floor, back against the couch and head leaned back as she took a puff of the joint she was smoking.
James was laying on the couch, eyes closed as he listened to the soft music playing on the back and now Stella’s talking. Both sounds were muffled due to the effect of the pills she had given him when he first arrived.
Because of the strong effect they caused, he had to take it slow and get in that laying position, too weak to even respond to her comment.
“Also all the Barnes” she made an emphasis on ‘all’ in the hopes of getting a response from James.
That made James laugh a little, which Stella didn’t quite understand, but also didn’t question. What she didn’t know is how James had been avoiding the Barnes for the longest time. Family diner on the weekends? Don’t count him in. Any of them at his house? Find him locking his door and blasting some music. And of course no coming anywhere near their house.
Again, this is nothing personal against them, he had a deep love for his extended family, but spending even five minutes with them would take James who knows how long to recover. It didn’t matter how many things he tried, nothing would work to overcome the feeling that takes over his body whenever he does something that reminds him how things used to be.
“Including Alex” Stella wasn’t much of a patient person and James not answering wasn’t helping her with that, so she went straight to the point.
One of the many times he had gotten drunk in that same basement he had told Stella a lot about his life, and Stella wasn’t blind, she had witnessed James’ behavior back in high school herself. The few people James floated around – mostly his siblings - and the way he looked at Alex Barnes.
Silence remained as James’ answer, he was listening, but didn’t feel like even starting to talk about it.
“Are you still alive over there?” she asked punching his leg.
The music on the background was the only sound that filled the room for the next couple of minutes, until James felt the punch she had given him and he reacted.
“Yea” James groaned “you have more?” he asked after a while, extending his arm with his palm opened, thinking she would straight away would give him what he wanted.
“Dude, forget about overdosing in my basement, I’m not giving you any more pills” sure, Stella had a guaranteed business with James, but she wasn’t stupid, she needed to set some boundaries - otherwise James would keep going one after another until he wouldn’t wake up, also the boy had grown on her and she didn’t feel like watching him die in her old couch.
“You’re a party pooper” Stella found funny the way wasted James talks - he slurs every word and his voice gets deeper and raspier.
“And you need to get your dick suck to blow off some steam” she chuckled, slapping James’ hand away.
“No shit, Sherlock” his eyes opened slightly, he was trying to focus his eyes on her, although everything was pretty blurry “do you wanna suck it?” he asked, his eyebrows raising at the same time as his goofy smile.
“Maybe” she took a second to take another puff of the joint “If I were into dicks” the high couple of friends looked at each other, keeping the stare contest for a little longer until both of them cracked laughing.
Eventually the laughing died down and none of them said anything else. James was still very much in a different world while Stella had changed positions to lay completely on the floor, staring at the ceiling, which was painted with a weird attempt of a replica of the starry night – it looked awful.
“I’m hungry” James announced out of the blue.
When he didn’t get a reply from Stella he started the process to get up from the couch. First step was changing to a sitting position, second step – rest for a couple of minutes until the room stopped spinning.
After that he managed to get up and stumble to the old dresser, where normally he would find the first drawer full of snacks, but this time when James opened it there was nothing.
“you gotta be kidding me” he mumbled, checking the rest of the drawers to see if maybe he had made a mistake and it was a different one, but no luck – all of them were empty.
“Don’t waste your time, there’s no food” Stella informed him.
“I’ll go get some” there was a 24-hours-open shop not too far away and even though he was so tired he had to drag his feet in order to walk and ever more on drugs - he was hungrier.
“you’re gonna freeze your ass” Stella was too high to make it sound like the cold weather was a real problem and James still didn’t give a fuck, so he left.
He put his hood on and went outside into the snowy and windy night. The cold wind against his skin made it feel like a thousand tiny needles were being stabbed on the face, which helped him a little to be back into the real world.
The streets were empty, something to be expected at 3 a.m., but still a nice surprise for James, who decided to take his time to wander under the faded street lights. He thought it was a good idea to eat some snow, but it wasn’t – the after taste was sickening.
For a moment he forgot where he was going, even where he was in that moment, but when he saw the lights of the store in the middle of the parking lot he remembered he was actually hungry and his mission was to get some snacks.
Obviously the store was deserted. The only person there was the clerk, who couldn’t care less about James’ presence, his attention was focused on the comic he was reading and that was simply perfect for James.
He walked with heavy feet through the store, lights too bright for his own liking, and after grabbing some doritos and a few chocolate bars he went into the liquor section. He checked for any cameras pointing at him or to the bored clerk to see if he was looking at him, he wasn’t, so James took one of the smaller bottles of ron and hide it under his hoodie.
Shoplifting wasn’t a regular thing for James, this was maybe the second time he was doing it, and the rush of adrenaline through his body after he walks out into the cold again it’s what makes it worth it.
“I don’t even like this shit” he said to himself as he pulled the bottle outside to take a better look at it.
Taste wasn’t something important for him anymore anyways, he was down to drink whatever that gets him out of the agony that meant to be himself. That’s why he opened the bottle and took a long gulp, feeling how it burned down his throat.
“Fuck” he groaned before continuing his way to Stella’s basement. And maybe you’re thinking what a bad idea it is to mix alcohol and pills, James knows it, the problem is he doesn’t care.
The idiot kept drinking on his less than ten-minute walk, being more and more intoxicated by the second. In those conditions he couldn’t recall feeling much, but he knew the feeling was something he hadn’t experienced before.
He could feel his heart pounding really fast on his chest, his legs were failing him along with his hands, they were too weak to even hold the bottle of alcohol anymore. The light in the street seemed to be less and less bright as the stumbled with trouble. Next thing he knows he collapsed on the snow, unable to move any part of his body or even keep his eyes open.
About five minutes after James fell unconscious was when a very much high Stella found him, he had made it to her house, but not inside. The sight of the boy’s body, looking like he was dead, was the perfect thing to activate her emergency mode and make sure he was still alive.
There was pulse, slow and she could be perfectly getting confused by her own pulse, which was racing giving the circumstances, but she wanted to believe that James Rogers hadn’t overdosed on her front yard.
First thing she did was to move him on a different position, on his side, because the plan was make him throw up and empty his stomach from all he had taken in.
She tried, with the best of her abilities she had developed over the years, but he wasn’t reacting and that is when she reached for her phone to call 911. As if James knew what she was about to do he started to throw up every single thing he had eaten that day.
Stella dropped her phone and helped him to stay in the position he was in, she even tried the rubbing back thing, but it only made her more nervous since the boy was shaking like crazy.
Once he stopped throwing up – for the moment – Stella helped him up, one of his arms over her shoulders and of hers around his waist to help him stay up and make it inside the house, where she helped him to lay on the couch – on his side, of course – and went to get as many blankets as she could find, not only he could overdose but also, what if he was hypothermic? She had no idea how long he had been outside in the cold, he was lucky she thought about going out to see if he was coming back.
James was going in and out of consciousness, it depended if he was throwing up or not, but the entire picture looked scary, life threatening scary. That left Stella with no other option but to call an ambulance, she knew that wouldn’t be James’ choice and he will surely be very mad at her, but not calling an ambulance meant that maybe he didn’t get the chance of being mad at her, because he would be dead.

Season 14 Episode 7: Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story
Songs of The Episode:
Young Folks by The Wind And The Wave
Cosy in the Rocket by PSAPP
They by Congratulationz ft CavasBeta
Keep Breathing by Congratulationz
Such Great Heights by Madi Diaz & K.S. Rhoads
Portions for Foxes by Rilo Kiley
Synopsis:
*Warning this episode is extremely nostalgic and it is advised that you have your tissues ready*
The episode dives right into your feels as it opens with Mer on the beloved Seattle Ferryboat, yes that's right the boat that was once on Derek’s scrub cap -now housed by Mer- and the same boat that takes you to where the fantastical dream house was built. Accompanying her is Alex, as they descend back to the hospital. It is presumed that she went to see Derek and tell him about her prestigious Harper Avery nomination, when Alex asks, “How was it, was he happy for you?” To which she replied with a smile “No, he was jealous,” reminding us of their extremely competitive, yet ever motivating relationship.
Meanwhile Amelia walks in on Carina and Owen cooking naked… Amelia and Owen try to cover the awkward moment, but just ends in Amelia stealing some French toast while leaving hastily. Then we jump to Bailey as she’s walking to work with Ben driving alongside her trying to convince her to join him. She found out about the fire academy and to say she’s displeased would be an understatement. Arizona is painting every possible color on Sophia’s room, as she anxiously awaits her daughter’s arrival.
Another note of nostalgia as we see the new interns in the historic hallway (aka the tunnels) with the excess hospital beds. We are reminded of our favorite sleep deprived interns, the originals who grew up in those halls to be the doctors they are today. Mer is hesitant to leave for Boston where the Harper Avery Awards will take place. Alex tries to convince her, but is unsuccessful when a incoming trauma comes in. Deluca is still avoiding his ex, Sam.
The medical trauma this week: a rollercoaster ride gone awry! The first patient, who saved a bunch of children, is under the care of Owen and Amelia. Webber briefs Mer and Alex on the two patients who were transferred in the rollercoaster cart in which they crashed, for it would’ve been to life threatening to remove prior to their arrival at Grey Sloan. But wait, don’t they look familiar…. OMG they are the George and Cristina doppelgangers… but wait their friend just stepped out of the ambulance to check on them and… she is Izzie’s pregnant doppelganger. What.. what… and on que, the original theme song begins to play. Boy are we in for a treat.
Jackson tries to convince Mer to get moving, but she’s not leaving the trauma. Also it turns out the doppelgangers are doctors, they interning at Seattle Press! Bailey sends Ben to the Clinic as a punishment. Jackson checks in on Bailey to see where she is on the contest, but is quickly swerved when she confronts him about her husband’s career change and whether he happened to know about it when he had given her the money. Then we get a major throwback as we see Owen push Amelia back when he tells her that the hero doesn’t need a CT, but instead must be rushed to surgery. I’m sure this triggers you, just as well as me, back to that same decision that ultimately killed Derek. When we recall the tragedy of Derek’s death we reflect on a simple diagnosis that can be captured by quick CT and then fixed by an immediate surgery. Unfortunately, if this bleed is not seen right away, the patient will be gone, even if the rest of their body is healed by other surgeries. Alex is in shock at seeing Izzie, as Jo walks up for advice. He tells Jo that since she’s always wondered what she was like and surprised, Jo describes her as pretty and perky. Then Izzie comes up to them to check in on her friends, when he’s at a loss for words and Jo just watches him struggle in the most comical way. Izzie begins to lose her balance, and Alex swoops in to catch her. Another major tbt to when he carried Izzie after Denny’s heart wrenching death.
The intensity rises as baby George is unable to breathe when they remove part of the car seat. No worries, Webber has the fix, Mer must hold traction on his head. They are confused why everyone continues to stare at them and Mer fesses up, she tells them it's because they remind everyone of George and Cristina. To which baby Cristina freaks out and yells at them not to stare.
Little Izzie has an ultra sound done, and finds out that her baby has a tumor on it’s placenta. She must have surgery to get it removed, as it is very dangerous. Fearful, Izzie grabs Alex’s hand and Jo address the weirdness of the situation, but at the same time understands.  Mer is still holding traction and Jackson comes by to help. When baby Cristina realizes who the both of them are, her tune changes and she relates them to surgical royalty. Katherine and Jackson nearly convinced Mer to go to the awards, when after they transported baby George, baby Cristina’s stats started to plummet. She then tells Jackson to go in her place.
April makes her own attempt to convince Mer to go, but baby Cristina begs her not to. She claims Mer to be her idol and asks of her to think of her best friend (the real Cristina) and to save her like she would her best friend, to fight for her with the same vigor. Pulling at all of are heartstrings and nearly bringing Mer to tears. Jackson announces that Mer’s not going, so Maggie and Zola stay behind as the Avery’s depart. Amelia rushes to the OR with a portable CT when she finds out that Owen had ignored her order. He accuses her of being upset about his encounter with Carina, you know the one she walked in on. But she proves him wrong when the CT discovers a brain bleed (an expanding epidural hematoma to be exact) in which she must operate immediately. After gloating a bit to Owen, he then apologizes for doubting her. She explains that he was partially right, in that she was thinking of Derek and that in doing so he saved a man’s life today.
Webber and Bailey check in on baby George who blames himself for endangering his friends, when all he wanted was to have a little fun outside of working. His self- deprecating, selflessness, and innocence, triggers Bailey to recall the real George, a man who helped deliver her baby, who was really a part of her family, and whose death she mourned daily for over a year after the tragic incident occurred. Interestingly enough, when Webber goes to comfort her, he finds out that the tears are from her anger with Ben. Unfortunately their moment was interrupted by the sounds of banging in the skills lab (notice the accidental word play hahaha), to which Sam, followed by Deluca exited. Deluca consults his sister about his recent love affair with Sam, one that she’s seen the end result time and again.
April is angry with Mer for taking her Harper Avery nomination for granted, and inadvertently expresses her jealousy. She feels inferior, but Mer reminds her that she is not average, that she is incredible and ultimately she should give herself more credit. And she also expresses how deeply she does want the award. Arizona, Jo, and Alex must perform an emergency c-section on Izzie, because the baby is in distress. Arizona remembers Mark in comforting Izzie. She remembers his calmness, his charm, and his kindness. In this beautiful moment, she delivers the baby and also comforts herself as she prepares for her daughter's arrival, he reminds her of her strength, and instills confidence in her to be a fulltime mom again.
In one of my absolute favorite scenes of the episode, to which I cried a little if we’re being honest, Zola proves that she is wise beyond her years. She tells Maggie that she’s going be a brain surgeon like her father, before admitting that she missed her dad and then asked Maggie if she missed her mom. When Maggie answers with an almost tearful yea, Zola then recounts what she believes her mama would say: “Even though your mom’s not here, she’s always with you.” To end this beautiful moment she offers her aunty a hug.
Webber and Bailey save baby George, but not without wishing they had been able to do the same for the real George. Izzie’s baby is okay! Alex lets her hold baby Jasper for just a few minutes before he must take him to the NICU, but in this moment we see Arizona and Karev marvel in their past memories.
Bailey is scared of Ben’s commitment issues. But he explains that he just wants to try this while he is still young and able, he doesn’t want to live his life with regrets. Before they are able to finish their conversation, Webber grabs Bailey since Jackson is on the phone.
Another tear jerker. Jo tells Alex to call Izzie to get closure and see how she’s doing. Instead he tells her the story that she’s made up for her in his mind, one that is intricate, personal, and a bit of a nod at how Katherine Heigl is actually living, a tale in which she’s extremely happy. He tells her that he doesn’t need to call her because he doesn’t want to ruin it and he feels that “she’s as happy as I am with you.” Then they lean back in silence, just so happily in love and mature enough, grown enough, comfortable enough to acknowledge their past and embrace it, as it poses no threat to their future (that is his ex doesn’t, her ex poses a detrimental threat to their happiness, but I digress, let us be happy in this moment).
You know what, don’t even bother putting your tissues away. After Mer and April’s surgery, Bailey and Webber bring the Harper Avery awards to her as they project the show on the TV in the OR. All of the doctors along with Zola watch from the gallery as Catherine Avery announces that Meredith Grey has WON THE HARPER AVERY. Jackson gives the most heartwarming, eloquent, and masterful speech about Mer’s dedication to surgery, to her patients, and that despite her personal tragedies, she’s remained a gracefully innovative person/surgeon. He also pays tribute to her fallen sister, Lexie, who was one of my absolute favorite characters. As Mer along with all the doctors marvel in the moment, they pan the camera to the gallery where we see Mer looking up to a familiar face. Her mother applauds her with the proudest of smiles and we see the joy on Mer’s face in knowing that her mother is indeed looking down on her extraordinary daughter.
Back at Arizona’s house, we see little Sophia as she arrives back home. She expresses how much she misses her mama and Arizona admits that she does too (a nod to Callie who is happy in NYC). As Arizona comforts her daughter with ice cream, there’s a close up of the first family photo of Mark, Arizona, Callie, and Sophia, the one that was taken so many seasons ago, paying homage to the fallen and the departed.
Things get steamy back at the hospital as Deluca and Sam hook up in the infamous on call room. Mer shows Owen baby Cristina, but he denies their similarities, to which she mentions Burke (saying that she should ask him if they look alike), thus another tribute to departed. He also reminds her that no one is like Cristina, true that Owen!
Mer and Alex kick the interns outta the tunnels as they celebrate together Mer’s epic and well deserved win. Cristina then facetimes in as they all enjoy champagne.
A Few Additional Thoughts:
First of all, this episode was incredible and had a lot of nods to the epicness of Grey’s Anatomy’s 300 episodes! Kudos to the entire cast, crew, and writers on the incredible work they’ve done. This episode was truly special and definitely worth the watch. My praises are endless and thus I’ve decided to dedicate a whole other post to commemorate 300 episodes of Greys and the impact it’s had. So for more info, check out our next post!

“Dope A-F” - 2/25-2/27 - “Thar She Bombs!”
Time to cover a lot of ground in a short amount of time sweet sweet laydees! So let’s hop right into it my sweet little pumpkins!
2/25
I got to Charlottesville a little early for this show. I met up with Colby Knight to grab a burger at Citizen Burger Bar and relax. We talked about his future career in being a pilot, what it’s like to be a comedian going to a super religious school, and all the insanity that comes from going there.
The food was good and then we headed to The Southern. I got there and everything was already set up. Which was dope because I didn’t feel like doing it that night. I go to the bar and get the open mic list started.
Comics start to file in. We end up getting about 26+ comics on the list. I can’t believe how this show has grown. When it started it used to be like 8 to 12 comics a show, and the more experienced comics would be like 10+ minutes to work on their stuff. It’s a give and take. A lot of the time I wish I was getting that amount of time again, and other times I am just loving getting to hang out with 20+ of my friends every week.
A lot of these comics have definitely grown a lot since I met them a year or so ago. They’ve started to go to more open mics since the scene is growing, and also a few of them have started going to Richmond to get on stage more. They’ve also been doing more booked shows, and it is starting to show. They all have a super long way to go, but honestly seeing any type of development in a scene is awesome.
We don't have any drama at this show, but during Chris hosting set this female comic named KB is heckling him. She is trying to have fun, and Chris isn’t being mean to her. He is riffing with he, but he is keeping his cool. This is mainly because he vowed to quit bullying people and not bust balls as much. Which is hilarious because it is what we do. So no more BC (bully Chris) we live in the era of PC (polite Chris). So the running gag all night is I was doing a tally of how many mean things and polite things he was doing. He handles the situation and gets the piggy back show started (this is when the comedian on stage brings up the next comedian and all the host does is work the light).
Everybody is doing ok. Nothing too noticeable or memorable about the first few sets. No one is really bombing, or killing. I am seventh on the show and I have some new that I wanted to work out. The KB lady goes up a couple before me and doesn’t do well at all. It was kind of nice to see someone who was heckling not do well. It was very cathartic to me.
I went up shortly after her and she just spent the first minute sitting in the front row talking loudly. So I used the first minute of my set just addressing it and getting her to pay attention. She eventually does and I go into my new material. Some of it did ok. Like I needed to really work out the wording, which I was able to do with some of it. The big win was I did a joke about a rapist, and that worked the best. I think it’s a good take on it, and doesn’t punch down or mock the victims. So hoping I can work it out and build it into a bigger chunk. I’d give my set a solid C. The response wasn’t what I wanted, but it was definitely one of the more productive sets I’ve had in a while.
I then spent the rest of the night just hanging out and busting balls with my friends. Some people had some good sets though. Paige did well, so did Alex, and Sam Padgett had one of the better sets I’ve heard him have. He has come a long ways, and his work is paying off.
Fun show and a good hang. I grab my stuff, helped clean up, and headed home.
2/26
This was going to be a fun day. The night before I had seen Beau Troxclair and asked if he wanted to get sushi with Alex and I and he said yes. So we show up at Sushi King in Richmond (all you can eat sushi/hibachi place. Great food, reasonable price.)
We get there and we just start gorging ourselves on sushi, fried rice, steak, chicken, shrimp, etc. This is when Beau tells us that he can’t eat sushi, and he is allergic to all fish. Which seems like a thing you should mention before you go to the sushi restaurant. Either way he isn’t worried about it, he wanted to hang, and there is enough non fish on the menu that he will be fine.
As the meal goes on we are having a great conversation about food, comedy, women, improv, and anything in between. We are trying to figure out the order we are trying to do the three open mics that night and Beau starts to get red and swell up. He is like, “yea I think there was cross contamination. I’m going to go get Benadryl.”
So he runs out and Alex and I keep eating. Like 10 minutes goes by and I am starting to worry that Beau died on his way to his car. Right when I mention walking outside to look for him he comes in. He had to walk to a gas station to get Benadryl. The waiter comes over and is like are you ok, and Beau calmly tells him, “I'm just allergic to fish, I probably should have told you that.” The waiters face was great. This was a dope meal.
We go our separate ways for a few hours and then I go pick up Alex and we head to City Dogs. Which will be the first mic we hit of the night. It is usually poorly attended by comics so you can get a longer set. This was not the case tonight. There was a nice little list. There was actually a table of four cville comics who came out (Colby, Abdulla, Keaton Ray, John Marg) I was super stoked and proud to see them.
Ben Braman runs this room and let me know he had me second. I am stoked and ready to get this thing on the road. There is a nice little audience there, but they aren’t there for comedy. They’re standing right next to where we are going to perform and could care less about comedy. Beswick goes up first and goes super high energy while working out new stuff. He basically ends up screaming his closer at the stunned audience members. It was a super fun set to watch.
I go up next and just work on new stuff. I get some laughs from a couple in the front and the comics a little. It is weird to remember that open mics aren’t even about killing at this point. This is work, and that’s what I try to do. I try to work it out. I’d give this a D+ or C-. No real audience response, but I got to try some new stuff. Alex goes next and has a pretty good set as well. His new is good and he is really putting some bows on some great material rn.
We say our goodbyes and head over to Fallout to try and go early over there as well.
We get there and Jesse Jarvis was hosting. He had Alex and I up pretty early. We get a good hang in and the show starts. Beswick has a pretty strong set, and I went up a few after him. I did pretty well here. I’d give it a C. I kept doing new stuff and I dug up an oldie that was on the back burner about the optometrist office. It felt good to bring it back, and try some new things. The people that were there were into it and it felt good. Beau did pretty well and so did Alex. It was definitely a productive mic.
This was the home stretch. It was time to head to Mojos for the last spot. We get there and mic was legit about to end, but he added us just in time. There was almost no one here. Going late at mojos is tough. it is basically just working on wording. I’d give my set a D. I got maybe 2 or 3 laughs and they were in weird spots. It was just me reciting them to a couple of my friends. It was a fun bomb and didn’t even feel bad because I was getting this new done.
I then said goodbye and drove Alex back to his place before heading home. A super fun and productive night full of bombs. Nights like this is what makes you a much better comic. I got 22 minutes of stage time in front of 3 tough crowds. This was invaluable. I don’t think many people other than Alex and I managed to do all 3! Sometimes the grind just feels good.
2/28
I got the call right after work that they needed a host for The Richmond Funny Bone. Even though it was an off night and I was going to do dinner with my family I cancelled because quite frankly I need the money. So I dropped my plans (which I felt like shit about) and headed to meet Dylan Vattelana who let me know about the show in the first place.
I first had to go renew my membership to Costco and order some contacts. I’m glad I have vision insurance, but even with that the cost of contacts is so damn much. Like it is ridiculous what I have to pay to just be able to see. Afterwards I do my fav thing at Costco and buy myself a delicious Churro.
I meet Dylan at Rock Bottom, which is the bar directly above the Funnybone. We talk some business stuff about comedy. Tell a few street jokes, and generally have a super fun time. We talk about some of the very real anxieties I have about the Funny Bone and comedy clubs in general. He gives some good advice, and it means a lot because Dylan is one of the comics I respect the most. When I started about 4 years ago he was already established as one of the best guys in the scene and he has just built on that. He is an excellent writer, and has a drive and determination that I try to match. I love the dude and it is so cool to be able to call him a friend and a peer.
We go downstairs and head to the club. Dylan leaves his notebook and the bartender runs after him. I riff about how ridiculous it would be if he just started acting like she did it to get his number (I have a girlfriend, what are you doing right now?” and then we head inside.
We are greeted by the door guy Wayne and the “voice of the Richmond Funnybone” Buz “with one z”. We shoot the shit and head to the green room until James Lawson gets there. James is a dope local headliner who also gets to go on the road. He always destroys and he has material for everybody. He has always been good to me since I started and I will always appreciate that.
We have a pretty good turnout for a Wednesday. I’d say it was a little over half full so we had about 130+. Which is solid for the middle of the week. They only have 3 servers so people are a little on edge, but overall it looks like it’s going to be a fun night.
I go up first and do some crowd work up top. Which is something I am always scared to do here, because I doubt they want their host to do crowd work. I need to do it more often. It is my greatest asset as a host and I”m dumb when I don’t utilize it. I get some super strong pops up top for my first 5 minutes. Then the mic cuts out during the next couple of minutes and I start to lose them. I then have a lady say my fly is down (which it wasn’t) and that was an awkward situation because I was dumb and didn’t go into her (I didn’t want to set an even weirder tone for the show). I need to follow my instincts. I then closed on my Angel/Devil race joke. It gets an ok reaction and I’d give this set a C-. I did my job and warmed up the crowd, but I had stuck to crowd work I think it would have been even better.
Dylan goes up next and does well, and then after him James absolutely murders for 50+ minutes. He was in his element. He was completely at home and won those people over to a degree I can’t even imagine doing. When someone does that well in a room that makes me so anxious it is inspiring and disheartening at the same time. I can’t picture doing that well. Like legit can not fathom it. After the show I find out I get to host Thursday and Sunday for Cash Levy for sure. This is huge. I need the money and he’s a good comic. I head out and head home to get some other work done. Solid night. I got a check, got to work a club, and got a sweet hang out of it.
That’s it for this installment. I’ll be back tomorrow my sweet apple pies. I’ve got three sets tomorrow and will be zooming all over town. I hope the shows are good, and that I can work out some of this new shit. We shall see. xoxoxo thanks again.

“Dope A-F”-1/17-1/20- “Snowing in Space”
We’ve got some shows to catch up on my little sugarbees. We had some hot ones this week, but also what goes up must come down. Got a nice humbling set in there as well. So let’s get started and recap this ish. Don’t forget to follow me on IG/Twitter @winstonhcomedy
1/17
I was pretty stoked about this day. I was going to get to do two sets. The best part is the first one is a brand new show in Charlottesville. It’s super dope to see new shows pop up in that area. Especially one’s I am not involved in running,
The new show was at Snowing in Space Coffee. Ironically enough it started snowing on my drive up to Charlottesville. I get to the venue pretty early and order a super delicious hot chocolate and settle in.
New shows are always weird, and can give me a mix of excitement/anxiety. The excitement comes from the prospect of doing jokes in front of a new crowd, and the anxiety comes from the fear of no one showing up/it being poorly run/no attendance.
The comic who was putting on the show is Carly Crickenberger. I don't know her at all, but was interested in meeting her. She didn’t attend because she had broken her ankle so Brian Gerard was going to host in her place.
Lot’s of my friends showed up, but we also had some new comics as well. JR, John Marg, Keaton Ray, David McCallie, and David Luzader were all there. Then there were about two or three other comics I had never seen before who were going to try it out.
The show starts and Brian does his set, There is a pretty solid crowd there actually. They have a weird energy. Not antagonistic, but they just had a really chill vibe. Which makes sense we are about to perform in a coffee shop.
The seats start to fill up and more and more people come in. Brian then brings up John Marg. John does ok. I can tell the audience is trying to really get a grasp of what to expect from the show. The room is also super deep so people are spread all the way to the back of the room. I set up my camera and get ready to perform.
I had a pretty hot set. Only one of my jokes didn’t do really well, and it was a race joke in a room with no black people so I expected as much. I closed on my witch joke. I’d give this set a B. Honestly super solid. It was hard to get huge laughs because of how deep the room was, but they were into it and attentive.
After me a few more comics went up. The show is going well and no one is really bombing which is nice to see. McCallie has the best set I’ve ever seen him have, JR has some stuff that goes over pretty well, and a new female comic who brought some friends had a good one.
They then took a fifteen minute intermission. Which historically seems like an absolutely miserable idea for a comedy show.  All the momentum we had just built up for an hour now has to be recaptured. You’ve also basically ended the show and given people the permission to leave. Thankfully neither of this happened. It was a miracle.
I watched a few more sets and everyone was doing well when I left. I also had a friend’s sister come up to me and tell me how dope my set was. It was awesome because I hadn’t seen this friend in years, and had never met their sister before. So all in all a pretty dope moment.  I left and then drove to Richmond to perform at Penny Lane Pub.
I get to Penny Lane and there is a tiny little crowd there and a handful of comics. It was weird because it was a lot of newer comics. It’s crazy how the scenes has changed in Richmond since I started. Legit the only comics at this show who have been doing it for over a year were Dylan Vattelana, Anthony Thompson, Patrick Buhse and myself.
It is super good to see Anthony out. He was one of the group of people I really looked up to and wanted to be like when I started standup in Richmond. It seems like he is ready to get out and start grinding again at these mics which is dope af. He’s a beast on stage even with the time off, and I can’t wait to see all the new shit he has been working on.
I get there and Jameson Babbowski is hosting. He asks if I’m ready to go up and I tell him yea. I go up and work my ass off. I have people laughing and paying attention. It feels good to work out the new stuff, and just try to sell it well. I’d give this set a C. I lost them at some points, and a couple jokes didn't hit in the way they should.
I get off stage and Anthony goes up. He has to deal with a heckler who gets mad about a MAGA hat reference. He handles it well and continues to do his shit. Just nice to see him on the stage. Solid set.
This is one of those nights where I could stay out a little later. Just talking comedy with the other comics. Shooting the shit, riffing, being weird, all that good stuff. One of my friends Bryan was in his feelings about his set, and we kind of broke it down for him. He seemed better after the talk, but sometimes people just need tough love. All in all super fun and a great hang. I headed home and passed out.
1/19
I took Friday night off because I wasn’t booked anywhere and I needed to be home for my niece/brother’s birthday brunch.
So after the brunch I headed up to DC to meet up with Chris at Tjs place. We hung out for a few hours before heading into the city.  Chris was featuring at The Improv for Adrienne Iapalucci and I was going to try and get three sets in.
It is already raining and I am an idiot and did not bring my boots. So my tennis shoes/feet are already soaking wet. We go and grab dinner at Super Pollo before heading our separate ways.
I walk to my first set at Comedy Club DC at Club Heaven and Hell. Usually this is run by Tom Mango but this week Brock Snyder was running it. I’ve never met him before. He sees me and informs me I am up third. The crowd is pretty huge.  Like this is going to be a dope show I am so ready.
The show starts and already they’re into it. Keith Correy goes up first after Brock and had a solid set. Then Kevin Tit does well, and closes especially strong.  Then it is my turn.
I went up and had a killer set. Like it felt so good. Everything was hitting, and I could have been up there for an hour. I felt like I was able to really wake them up. I’d give my set an A. After I get off stage I get a lot of compliments form other comics which is nice. The best part is two comics come up to me about booking opportunities which is awesome.
I then walk to DC Drafthouse. Once I get there I realize my backpack is not waterproof and all of my notebooks and art from my students soaking wet. I am absolutely devastated, but have to power through because I’ve got two sets left to do.
I am lucky enough to get on at Drafthouse. I end up having a dope set there as well. I’d give this one a B. They were a tiny crowd, but they definitely wanted some comedy. I started a little slow which I feel like I tend to do a lot. I need to work on that. If I could start faster/stronger at these mics I’d definitely kill harder. All in all a super fun set.
This time I say screw it and get an uber to Big Hunt. I am so angry about the rain I did not mind I was spending ten bucks. I go downstairs and Chris is there. Everybody is hanging out and I find out I’m going up in a few spots. I do some different stuff during my set than I’ve done at the other spots. I had a dope set. My Kavanaugh joke worked pretty well, and I”m really starting to see the material grow. I’d give this set a B+.
Chris and I walk back to his car after his set and head back to TJs. We chill the rest of the night and I pass out hard af around 3 am. All in all a solid DC trip.
1/20
Sunday is a little more low-key of a night I woke up crazy late and headed back to Richmond. There is two open mics happening this night. Which is dope. Sunday is always a dead night for open mics. So the fact that there are now opportunities to get up a couple times on a Sunday is pretty amazing.
Unfortunately even though lot’s of comics talk about there not being shows, and wanting to grind both of these open mics had like no comics there. Which is a shame because both shows had fine crowds.
The first room I did was Brewers Cafe which is a black owned coffee shop. The host of that show is Remo Millz. This is a good, tough, workout room. I’ve done this room a handful of times and more times than not I do pretty well, but I also do a lot of crowdowrk here.
Only about 5 comics show up, and including the audience I am one of two white people at the show. I love doing rooms like this. I have a few race jokes that I am trying to work out, and I am a firm believer that if you have race material and you won’t do it in front of black people then you shouldn’t be doing that material.
Since there are two mics to go to Remo doesn’t even doing a hosting set he just brings me up. This is not a good start. They seem disinterested in what I’m saying. I’m not offending them. They just aren’t vibing with me which is brutal. Instead of resorting to crowd work I just double down and keep doing the material. Everything gets light chuckles and one dude really dug my set.
The mic cord pops out of the tiny PA  and Remo has to come plug it in. This ten minute set starts to feel like an eternity. Then a lady comes in and she has bright hair, bright make up, and bright clothes. I talk to her a bit and make one joke about how she look and IT DOES NOT WORK AT ALL. This was a big fat bomb. I’d give it an F. Definitely proud I worked out the material I did, and stuck to it, but part of me was like I should just do crowd work and not bomb.
After I bomb my dong off I head over to Hof Garden to do a set there. The setup is different than it was the previous week, but the good news is there are more people here. There is an actual crowd which is awesome. The Patriots playoff game is on the tv, the crowd is a little talkative, and swing dancing is happening in the other room. But a crowd is a crowd so I am pretty excited.
The host Moe Singleton goes up and gets the room right for comedy. After his set my buddy Alex Castagne goes up. He cracks them a little bit. He has a good set, and his newer material is working well. He responds to a heckler during his “talk like a baby” joke and that riff works great. Alex has a solid overall set, but then he has to leave.
There is a new female comic who is up right before me. She is obviously new and is working stuff out. Her stage presence isn’t quite there yet, and she definitely needs help with economy of words. She keeps the audience’s attention so you know she has interesting things to say. She just needs to work on punching it up.
I go up next and decide against crowd work again. I double down on new material and try it all in a different way from earlier. This is a more diverse crowd than the first show. So the material goes better. I get my “Trump is the 16th worst President joke” to work a little better. I keep adding to my witch joke as well. All in all a solid productive set. Definitely feels good to work that stuff out. I’d give it a C.
I continue to watch the rest of the show and everybody does ok. Patrick Jensen, Rebecca Hyman, and a couple new comics I forget go up. All in all not a bad show.
The last comic did go up and he opened with a street joke (which I hate). That killed. Then he just starts reading fb statuses and it’s basically just repeating memes. Then he closed with another street joke. Please people don’t do this. I hate this. It’s a bummer to see, and it’s cheap. Write your own shit please. Yes at first it won’t be as funny because doing comedy is hard. That’s why not everyone does it. Repeating memes won’t make you a good comic. It will just lose you the respect of other comics, and honestly just bum them out. Be better comics.
After this I hang out until they close and head home. The hang was super fun. Alan Vann dropped by but he didn’t get off work in time to go up. One of the new comics said that for only doing comedy four years I wasn’t that bad. Which I am going to take as the compliment it was intended to be, but won’t lie it hurt. Such a fun night, and can’t wait for the Hof Garden next weekend. I just found out I will be hosting it so that will be dope.
Thanks baybees and laydees! This was a good one to do. I’ve got some fun shows coming up. I’m at Cozzy’s Wednesday at 8. I’m doing Tidewater Tonight as a fun character I created Friday at 9:30. Saturday I’ll be in DC and I'm hosting Hof Garden Sunday. I feel like I”m a little stagnant right now. I hope I can get some more shows booked, and make some extra cash soon. The move is coming and I'm ready for it. XOXO Love you all.

Season 14 Episode 1: Breakdown This House
Songs of the Episode:
Feel It Still by Portugal. The Man
War Face by Lowell
Synopsis:
The episode opens with Amelia and Owen greeting Megan after her helicopter lands. Megan at first says she doesn’t know who he is, but it ends up being a joke, lightening the tone of a very scary, yet relieving moment. Once she’s in the hospital we learn that she’d actually been treated pretty well where she was in Iraq given the situation, but she would’ve been killed had she tried to leave. As she reunites with Riggs in this really sweet moment, they find out that there was a bombing six months prior and her abdomen hasn’t healed properly.
Elsewhere, Bailey holds a meeting to discuss some of the damage from the fire (last night aka last season’s finale), warning everyone where it’s safe to be. And comically as she’s saying this the ceiling comes crashing down. Bailey handles the situation just as you would think: like a boss (with a little sass). As this is happening JO ACTIVELY GOES UP AND TALKS TO ALEX ABOUT STEPHANIE LEAVING. This is not a drill! They actually speak, like they are friends...something we haven’t seen in a few episodes. And of course Deluca and Jo make eye contact, alluding to one of the many suspected love triangles this season. Hunt and Riggs take a leave of absence, while Amelia begins working right away, giving Owen space, leaving Maggie and Meredith worried.
Riggs takes Megan to get an abdominal CT in an attempt to find out her options for her frozen abdomen. Meanwhile, she asks him if he’s met anyone substantial...and on que Meredith walks through the door (unbeknownst to Megan) to check on Riggs. She leaves and he answers Megan with a charming, “she’s not you” in regards to his secret someone.
Amelia is working with Deluca on a teen with excruciating head pain, but mysterious condition. Meredith butts heads a bit with Bailey and Webber on a surgical plan for Megan. She wants to do a riskier approach, while they’d rather play it safe. Megan sides with Meredith (she still doesn’t know who she is) and then proceeds to tell them all that she has an adopted son in Iraq and plans to go back to raise him. *Side note: Here they cleverly bring up the current immigration laws, which prevent her from bringing her son to the U.S. One of the many reasons why I love this show is because it talks about real issues and starts conversations of change!*
At the OR board, Ben recognizes that Jo seems upset. She tells him that she misses Stephanie, wonders who’s gonna be that person for her now that she’s gone. Comically he states that she’s making Steph’s misfortunes about herself and she throws it right back at him when he calls saving her a rush. As he exits, Alex invites her to present a case, and the little boy thinks she’s Allora the Warrior Queen (which is a super clever pun because Camilla Luddington was once Lora Croft!). It is here where Alex offers her a solo surgery! (They’re talking, and even working together, ahhhhh progress!!)
The Sub I’s are 4th year med students who get an extended interview combined with the opportunity to do a six week rotation at GSM. They are basically a hyperbole on the millennials, who as we know can be a bit too into technology and not as good at taking social cues. This doesn’t mesh well with the attendings or Webber. When they finally get to see the action, half of them get queasy and pass out while the others scream... it’s gonna take some patience to train these sub I’s, but I think Webber is up for the challenge... or is he?
Owen tells Megan about their mom being with a 35 year old firefighter, lol imagine that! Then Megan tells him that she wants him to be happy and not to feel guilty for leaving her behind. Arizona is still trying to find Eliza after she’d been fired, and goes to her apartment to find that she’s moved without telling her.
Owen goes to get coffee and TEDDY SHOWS UP!
Amelia’s patient has an osteoblastoma that is benign and invading a lot of the bone structures around the jaw and skull. Everyone thinks her surgical approach is too risky, but she refuses to send the kid home. In the new skills lab Jo and Ben are caught talking again, this time Ben tells her he’s not going to be her new Stephanie... yea okay we’ll see about that. In come walking in the Sub I’s and she shows them the lab, but they are all too busy looking down at their phones taking notes. At lunch with April, Arizona finds out about the horrible new break up trend ghosting, and that in fact is what Eliza did to her. Teddy reconnects with April and Arizona. Maggie is uncomfortable with Jackson after April told her about his feelings for her. Teddy calms Owen down, while Amelia is trying to save the teen’s life, but catches the two of them getting cozy. Owen tells Teddy Nathan and Mer’s history, but she’s mad they didn’t tell about their history. So Teddy takes it into her own hands, and confronts Meredith, Amelia defends Mer and then gets grilled by Teddy.
In Jo’s surgery, the Sub I nicknamed glasses dropped his glasses in the surgical field contaminating it and they had to sterilize the field, then she kicked them out of the OR. Amelia then addresses her mixed feelings about how Owen’s sister metaphorically came back from the dead, while her brother doesn’t have the same fortune. So to get her mind off of this reality she’s focusing on this case. Avery shuts her down and not only will he not assist her in the surgery, he goes to Bailey in an attempt to stop her from doing the surgery at all. Karev and April complain about the Sub I’s and gets grilled by Webber, and when Bailey goes to high five him, and he tells her that they are not fit to be doctors.
Mer and Alex have a heart to heart. She feels bad about inserting herself into the situation, but Alex assures her that she is just trying to be the surgeon she wishes Derek had had. One that could’ve and would’ve saved his life. And she tells him that he’s got to tell Jo about the private investigator to find her husband. He’s trying to win her back, and apparently the whole hospital knows it (YES!). And Mer even tells him that if he wants a future with her, he’s gotta be honest with her.. not gonna lie I’ve never loved Meredith as much as I do so far this season! She’s confident and I feel like she’s growing into herself a little more.
Maggie is honest with Jackson and confronts him about what April told her about Jackson liking her. She then answers for him and agrees that they are on the same page (when they’re not) and continues on with her life. Mer is responsible and tells Megan about her past with Riggs. Megan goes in for her second surgery. Arizona goes out to the bar and gets hit on by a new woman. Jo watches Alex from across the bar. Deluca comes to the bar to talk to Jo and she stops him cold in his tracks to tell him that she’s STILL IN LOVE WITH ALEX! OMG OMG OMG I need a minute.
She then goes on to tell him that she doesn’t want to make it awkward between them. But the damage is already done, given he came to vent to her about Amelia. Whoops, ohh well at least he got the message loud and clear. Not to mention that means no Jo-Deluca-Alex love triangle wooooooohoooo! Then look who shows up. Glasses! He offers to buy her a drink and she opens up to him a bit. Teddy confronts Owen about Amelia not being there. Mer did the surgery successfully! And guess what, remember that woman that was hitting on Arizona, yeah well she went home with her and turns out her name is Carina.. Deluca. Yup that’s right, she’s Deluca’s sister. And so ends the episode with the Deluca’s hashing it out in Italian, while Arizona watches amazed and confused. OH WAIT.... NOOOOOO JO SLEPT WITH GLASSES (with instant regret written all over her face). Oh and turns out Mer’s surgery didn’t work.
Due to Episode 1 & 2 being presented together, my take on each will be provided together on episode Season 14 Episode 2!
