renly gotta be my favourite pov trap character. something about brienne convincing herself that she loves him while only actually loving the idea of him she creates in her head after having exactly one interaction with him as kids. the fact that we're told that he likes having her around (despite looking down on her) because unlike everyone else, she doesn't want his money or his political power, she just wants to die for him. loving his public persona but not him because she doesn't know him . loras actually being in love with him but idolising him because how could he hate his dead boyfriend that he feels like he murdered? never being able to accept his flaws and completely worshipping him because they grew up together. all of the bad things that he does stemming from that relationship that they had. being the only person that truly loved him while also being the only person that cannot openly grieve his death. stannis saying that he loved the boy renly was and not the man he became while never admitting responsibility for his part in the way he turned out because that means admitting that he left his baby brother and didnt act on the responsibilities he had to his family. the idea that if stannis hadn't abandoned him, renly could have been a much happier, more stable person contradicting the fact that staying with stannis after the war probably still would have created issues for him because growing up in a house where your main parental figure does not accept or confront the trauma you both faced would have only made him worse. oh i'm so normal about him

I'm just thinking about after the cathedral again. Because when it was about Quixis, they immediately agreed - but if you attempted to get them to apply the same idea to Fable, they immediately go into the offensive and try to deny that idea, that he hurt them. Quixis and Fable both hurt them *very bad* at some point - and both have tried to make it up to them very quickly after, and yet. And yet one of them is the bad guy and one of them is the good guy (in Icarus' eyes) and it's not who you'd think it'd be. And. It's just interesting to me. I think about it.

Love is a choice. It’s not a feeling. It’s a choice, it’s commitment, it’s serving, it’s giving. Platonically or romantically, it’s in your actions. It’s in how you choose that person.

That’s what Joel and Ellie are about. Joel chooses Ellie. He chooses her at the beginning of their journey. He chooses her after their argument. He chooses her at the hospital. He chooses to wake up every single day on the road and continue on protecting her.

Ellie chooses Joel. Every day she, too, woke up and chose him. Knowing he was still there, she chose him, still. She could’ve walked away from him any day. After Tess or Henry and Sam. After the ranch argument. After some random day on the road together when she met her end. But she continued to choose him. Because she loved him.

And, in game, this continues. They continue to choose each other—though, it doesn’t really become much of a conscious choice anymore. They’re sold on each other, there’s no more choice with that. They continue on in the commitment they’ve built with each other. Their commitment to each other and staying together. Their actions—giving, choosing, and serving each other.

Ellie, whatever side you’re on, moved out to the garage. Joel fixed it up for her. That counts. He let her have that independence and fixed it up for her. Ellie drew that picture of him that he kept on his fireplace. Joel did everything for that birthday trip for her. Joel started reading that ‘idiots guide to space book’ so that he could try and relate to her on that level. Joel taught her guitar. There’s probably a million other small things that happened in their day-to-day that could’ve been overlooked or things that was seemingly minor that still showed their commitment to the other.

And, in the end, Ellie chooses Joel in the biggest way. After feeling betrayed and angry for two years over how he chose her, she says she’d like to try to forgive him. To put in the work. Her actions. To continue in that commitment to him. To choosing him, just like he chose her.
