[ HUSH ]:          while standing close to one another and hiding from pursuers, the sender reaches up and places a finger against the receiver’s lips to prevent them from speaking and revealing their location. For Ves/Kurt 👀
*shows up 8.5 months later to start the new year with (sorta tweaked from the prompt) hurt/comfort fic and sincere apologies to Kurt*
ALSO a yecht fradi term I borrowed from my beloved @haledamage
---
The undergrowth crashed and cracked behind them, and normally Vesper would've worried about leaving a trail. But she had more pressing concerns than broken foliage, no matter the potential pursuit and their plans regarding her.
Namely, in ascending order, the ragged edge to Kurt's breathing, how heavily he was leaning on her, and the massive bloodstain spreading down his leg that was responsible for the former two.
He stumbled and her heart skipped a beat, grip instinctively tightening on his belt. "Almost there," she panted, scanning for the familiar landmarks.
Vesper all but dove into the cave when the vague promise of its mouth materialized through the treeline. She sent up a prayer of thanks the tenlens hadn't moved back in as they stumbled toward the far edge of the first chamber and she eased Kurt down to sit on a small outcropping, half-hidden in a niche along the wall.
He pulled a hissing breath, voice rough when he spoke, "Are... are they still coming?"
"Not sure." Vesper had already hit her knees next to him, attention more on the deep gash across the outside of his thigh than the entryway. "Maybe. Or maybe that last grenade did the trick."
She'd owe Aphra effusive thanks if that were the case. Maybe her own laboratory.
Kurt leaned his head back against the wall and gave a quiet growl--whether pain, frustration, or some mingling of the two Vesper wasn't sure.
She was sure this wound was a bigger threat than any pursuing group of bandits, no matter how tenacious or well-equipped. Her hands were slicking with a frankly alarming amount of blood, especially considering how much he'd already lost. "Kurt-"
"We shouldn't count on them being gone," he grit out. His gaze darted around the cavern, lit with recognition--and remembering the detail that made it so appealing a hiding spot to her. His fingers circled her upper arm and he tried to tug her to her feet. "You should keep going--"
Vesper slipped his grasp--too easily; he was stronger than that--as she shook off her doublet. "No."
"You can... get out one of the back ways, a-and I'll-"
"You'll what?!" she hissed, struggling out of her shirt while keeping one hand pressed to the wound. For all the good it was doing.
"They're after you, Green Blood, I can slow them down-" Kurt sucked in another sharp, pained breath even as he tried again to push her toward the passageways out and staggered to his feet.
"How, you can barely stand," Vesper snapped. She yanked him back down by his belt and balled up her shirt against his leg. "Sit still. I'm not leaving you, anyway."
He gave her a look, sharp, almost desperate, a muscle in his jaw working as she pushed more firmly, and reached to trace his fingers down her cheek. "Ves. It's my duty as your bodyguard--"
Vesper's heart was pounding as she pressed a finger to his lips to shush him(instead of flicking him in the forehead, which was very tempting when he was like this). "It's your duty as my husband to be here for me," she retorted. Even in the dim light filtering through the cave entrance she could see how pale he was and it terrified her. "How're you planning to do that if you're dead, falaig wis?"
That shut him up.
Of course, given that they hadn't been discovered by ransom-minded bandits and there was no way potential pursuit was this far behind, they were probably safe regardless. That wasn't the point here. The point was Kurt's damnable determination to die for her and how it equally frustrated and scared her(he was not worth any less than her; she didn't want to lose him).
Silence stretched between them, broken by the rasp of his breathing--labored from more than their run through the woods--and a couple worried hums from Vesper.
"Kurt?" she finally nudged.
She didn't like the amount of effort it took for him to straighten and focus on her. "...mm?"
"Pressure alone isn't doing the trick." She bit her lip. She hated to make him move, especially with where the wound was, but the bleeding hadn't stopped and she was not losing him. "We need to elevate it."
Probably should have done that from the first, but she'd had a few problems she was trying to manage simultaneously. Besides, Kurt would never have agreed while he thought there was an active threat. Maybe now she could convince him, since no threat had materialized.
To her vast relief, Kurt nodded and started shifting toward the edge of his makeshift seat. "Guess... guess we're safe enough if they haven't followed us by now..."
"At least from that," Vesper murmured, helping him get settled as best she could while still keeping pressure on the wound. She rolled up her doublet--clumsily--to serve as a pillow, and braced his leg against the ledge he'd been sitting on for elevation. "Talk to me while I work, love, hmm?" She tried to keep her voice steady, upbeat. "Don't fall asleep." Not yet.
"Yes'm," Kurt mumbled with a faint smile at her admonishment. There was a beat, and then, "Do I wanna know what... falaig wis means?"
This smile was genuine if shaky as she looked (in vain) for a clean portion of shirt to press against his leg. The whole thing was already crimson. "Rocks for brains. Roughly."
He chuckled, shifting his shoulders in search of a more comfortable position on the cave floor. "Learn... learn that from Síora, did you?"
"Derdre, actually, if you want to be technical," Vesper said, repositioning the compress and wincing in twined sympathy and apology when it earned a pained grunt. "Though knowing it now, Síora did mutter it under her breath several times about us both while we were doing our pining but I refuse to admit it dance."
"Ah." Kurt was quiet for long enough she almost poked him to make sure he wasn't drifting off. "Are... Aren't you cold, Ves?"
The words had her abruptly, acutely aware of the gooseflesh across her shoulders and down her arms in the chill cavern. "I'll be fine," she said, suppressing an ill-timed shiver. "And I mean that. Hold still and let me take care of you, you can worry about me later."
"I don't recall you ever being this demanding b'fore, Green Blood," he commented, and it would have sounded like a joke if not for the ragged strain tugging at his voice.
"Yes, well, you've never been bleeding to death around me before," Vesper said dryly. It had dripped on her trousers, she noted, after they changed positions, small scarlet stains setting in the fabric. This entire outfit was a loss and she didn't give a fig. "New circumstances and all that."
She peeked under the bloodstained shirt. It looked to have finally stopped. Vesper nearly collapsed back against the wall, shuddering in relief.
Kurt started to move again, reaching for the doublet-pillow as if to offer it back to her.
"Don't. Move." It was halfway between an order and a plea, her hand on his shoulder to push him back down. "The bleeding finally stopped so I can do something about it. If you move it might start up again."
"Something?" Kurt parroted, though he did relax. His eyes drifted closed, but opened again before she could prod him. "You bring along a healer's kit I missed somehow?"
She shook her head, tucking back loose hair as she set aside the ruined shirt. Today was supposed to be for them, a stolen moment from her duties, not a mission of any sort and definitely not whatever it had devolved into. "The healing, from my bond to the island. With the bond stronger now, the healing is, too." She gently wiped drying blood away from the wound, wincing again at how deep it was as she cupped her hands over it. "So I can handle more serious injuries."
He nodded and watched her silently, the golden glow of her work turning his eyes from grey to something molten in the dim cavern.
The warmth of the magic seeped through her, banishing the shadowy chill, and Vesper gave a convulsive shiver when it faded.
Kurt levered himself up to sitting with a grunt, draping her doublet around her shoulders. "My turn to worry and insist you stop being stubborn," he murmured, before she could protest, brushing a kiss to her temple. "Especially on my account."
"But it's part of my duty to be stubborn on your account," Vesper countered, slipping her arms in the sleeves. It felt odd to wear the doublet with nothing but a breastband underneath, but her shirt was far beyond redemption. "As your wife." She turned her focus to her handiwork. She would've like to check it before he moved, however the wound looked healed. It had left its mark, though; a thick, viney scar angled up the outside of Kurt's thigh. She traced a finger along it. "As was this."
He was watching her with a mingle of so many emotions in his eyes she couldn't parse them all, but fond amusement won out. "And tellin' me I have rocks for brains? Is that another of those duties, wife?"
Vesper laughed, giddy on fading adrenaline now that all forms of danger were past. "Only when you're acting like it, husband."
He was still worryingly pale from all the blood he'd lost, but there wasn't much she could do for the beyond make him rest. Fortunately she knew a way to make that a more enticing prospect. Vesper shifted to lean back against a relatively comfortable section of the wall and tugged him with her.
"Mind, I might not be able to argue it for today," Kurt muttered as he complied, settling in with his head on her chest. "I lost my sword, in the mess of things."
She snorted. Oh, yes, that's what makes you falaig wis from the past couple hours. Not trying to get me to leave you while you were bleeding out. But she kept the glib thought to herself.
"It's child's play to get another, Kurt," she said instead, with a small fond laugh. Half the blacksmiths on the island would trip over themselves to say they filled a commission for New Sérène's legate.
"You bought that one," he mumbled into her chest.
"Is this sentimentality I hear?" she teased lightly, least-bloody fingers tracing circles on his temple while she tried to rub the other hand clean against her trousers. Go sleep, love. "It wasn't a gift, or a special occasion, or anything that should trouble you about replacing it, darling." With that hand reasonably free of blood, she ran her fingers through his hair before settling her arm around his shoulders. "But if you're attached to the old one and would rather retrace our steps and look for it, we can. After you rest."
"Mmm." She wasn't sure if the rumbling hum was agreement or thanks or something else entirely, but given he relaxed more heavily against her a moment later, it was irrelevant.
Vesper smiled and curled forward to kiss the top of his head. "Sweet dreams," she whispered, then settled back to enjoy the quiet of the cave and the weight of her very much alive husband pinning her down until he woke.
They could work out getting home then, once she knew what sort of shape he was in. For now, she was going to focus on the rise and fall of his shoulders as he breathed and be grateful circumstance or duty hadn't claimed him.
And start planning out that laboratory she almost definitely owed Aphra in thanks.

Greedfall Character's Zodiac Signs
Kurt - Virgo
I see Kurt as a Virgo because of his resilience and diligence. He's not afraid of hard work and he's always ready to improve himself and others with practice. Kurt's strong demeanor and loyalty (either to de Sardet and Constantin or the Coin Guard, but you can't deny his loyalty) is a huge part of his personality. As an Earth sign, he has a tough outer shell with a soft heart. It will be difficult to get him to open up, but once he does, you have him for life.
Siora - Scorpio
Our girl is so bright and full of life that I can only see her as the assertive Scorpio. Siora is capable of leading and always speaks up. She's righteous, though her temper can get the better of her at times. As a water sign, she is quick to cool off once she finds her head. She enjoys life with gusto and feels her emotions strongly, though her appearance is usually calm. Her sister warns de Sardet, however, not to confuse Siora as kind and sweet; she has a fierceness just below her surface, though her heart is filled with love.
Vasco - Aquarius
Not just because he's a Naut. 😂 Vasco can come across as a little emotionally unavailable and aloof when you first meet him, but that's because he's used to people who aren't a part of his Naut family being untrustworthy. Vasco can see either sides of the coin without prejudice, however, especially when he's able to sympathize with the parties. Aquarius signs tend to be strong leaders without fear. They can tend to be progressive in their thinking, for the most part, and value their independence.
Aphra - Capricorn
Aphra exudes the essence of Capricorn. She's hardworking and inquisitive to a fault, always seeking answers for the questions she holds. Her mind is constantly working and she never minds dipping into her research to help her friends, even seeming to enjoy it. Aphra can tend to put people off from her serious and no-nonsense personality, but she means well. She does have a soft side, though it takes a bit of digging.
Petrus - Libra
Petrus is calm and collected on the outside, diplomatic and balanced though he does have a drive to get what he wants or what he believes to be right. He has a strong sense of judgement and will listen to all sides of an argument, though once he has reached a decision it will be impossible to sway his mind. Petrus is as gracious as he is well-spoken. He may have an insecure streak and is hard on himself, but his sense of righteousness outpaces it.
Constantin - Leo
Constantin is always performing, no matter if there's anyone around to watch or not. He's always full of humor and laughter, even if that's not what he truly feels in his heart. He can be extremely selfish, but is also full of passion for whatever emotion he is experiencing. Constantin loves life and celebrates every second of it. Leos can tend to be party-animals or very social, though sometimes a bit prideful.

Yecht Fradi
Otherwise known as “the language the Natives speak in Greedfall”
So, I’m still working on this, but having finished the game now, I am -reasonably- sure that I’ve gotten every piece of spoken language in this game. As follows, I made a Google Doc to catalogue all of it (and like 100 pages of screenshots, mostly for context). Also, @key-of-bones bc you had mentioned an interest in this ^_^
I will continue to dig into this more, based on how much I can pull apart + the fact that I’ve been studying Irish/Scottish Gaelic/Welsh on and off in varying amounts for....years now.

omg al;ksdjfs i put that on the wrong blog! i will do it anyway! o/
blorbo (favorite character, character I think about the most)
i mean... siora. or like. any of the yecht fradi, no lie. i think about Them as a culture a lot and she's the main rep for her people so. ig that's pretty obvious choice sorry
scrunkly (my “baby”, character that gives me cuteness aggression, character that is So Shaped)
constantin. also feels like a bit of a gimme but i can't help it he's my son and boy. i know he's mad and evil but he calls me his dearest cousin and i would kill for him
scrimblo bimblo (underrated/underappreciated fave)
please okay listen. i love aphra more than i thought i would? like she just has so much personality and i'm here for her. she does NOT get the attention she deserves in fics
glup shitto (obscure fave, character that can appear in the background for 0.2 seconds and I won’t shut up about it for a week)
there aren't a lot of characters to have an obscure fave but you know i gotta pick wilhelm. he was in one sidequest for 10 seconds and i loved him so much i put him in my fic as a very important character, gave him backstory and then assigned him as part of my de sardet's personal guard so like. i saved that boy. know i must nurture him. (giving honourable mention to mev, but i don't think she counts as obscure)
poor little meow meow (“problematic”/unpopular/controversial/otherwise pathetic fave)
okay i'm not sure if it counts but: claude d'orsay. not bc i like him, the man is objectively despicable, we hear about how horrid he is from everyone who mentions him. but he makes such a fascinating character. honestly. i would play a game that was all the political intrigue of him coming into power. explain it. did he have to assassinate his way to the top? tell me about his wife's poisonous hobbies. was he secretly behind his first wife's death? (probably not but the DRAMA). shitty dad. outstanding characterisation for someone who never appears on screen once.
horse plinko (character I would torment for fun, for whatever reason)
alskdfj;asd excuse you de sardet is the horse plinko. nothing goes right! everybody dies! and it's all her fault! or governor burhan. he does nothing outright mean and rude in the game but his Vibes rub me the wrong way. i don't trust him.
eeby deeby (character I would send to superhell)
gotta be petrus for this one. sorry petrus but i literally cannot stand this whole 'you fell in love with my birth mother and did nothing to help her and then she died under HORRIBLE and intentionally (?) vague circumstances and now you're calling me child' schtick. it's creepy. fuck off.

Please someone inform De Sardet not to pose for portraits in full Yecht Fradi armor and a Congregation cape, he looks fucking ridiculous
[ID: a digital drawing of a male De Sardet from Greedfall. He is posed as if for a portrait in front of a green curtain, wearing intricate and colorful Yecht Fradi armor and a blue cape. He rests his left hand on the hilt of a sword, and in his right he is summoning blue magic. END ID.]

I’ve got this headcanon that DS and Constantin’s older brother who “died” were swapped. He was equal or greater value to DS, and all in order for the Prince to get the Nauts to break their customs. Because Prince d’Orsay really wanted a Yecht Fradi child, but alas they were Seaborn so they had to negotiate something. And so Constantin’s older brother is alive under a different name and is a Naut. Yet for all Constantin is told, his brother is “dead”.

26.05.2021 | Greefall Companions + Constantin + De Sardet
Flat colouring, because I truly did not have the stamina for anything more and my brain is ready to move on
The one thing you should take away from Greedfall is that the hats are part of the character design.
My De Sardet, whom I named Margot.
Constantin is our sweet baby cousin who is the epitomy of that 'carrying kevin hart' meme, I will accept no other opinion.
this whole thing started with me trying to give Vasco tattoo designs beyond the ones we see on his face.
I never actually took Aphra's hat off during the game so I didn't have any idea what her hair looked like? All I had to go on was screenshots and youtube footage from others, which seemed to suggest she has some sort of braid that fits under the beret.
I DID take off Petrus' hat in game and then IMMEDIATELY put it back on. The hat is CENTRAL to the character design. Without the hat? Who is this Oliver Cromwell-General Custer hybrid? I don't know all of a sudden, I can't see. Put that hat back where it came from or so help me.

Oh my god I have discovered hell and it is a game of linguistic telephone.
So, game: Greedfall. There is a Native language in game, based on Proto-Celtic.
Developers: Spiders, is a French studio.
The Problem: Celtic languages have a tendency to shift vowels/consonants around. So translating things gets...interesting. IRL examples are failing my brain atm, but in-game-wise, take the example of gais, “spear/s” becoming hais in the word Vedrhais “spear woods”. This is normal, but still a layer of complexity that I have to deal with.
The problem is that I can see a lot of instances where words got translated/transliterated...wrong, or badly, or whatever you want to call it, between French-English-Native and back and forth, etc. C’s and K’s (Cwa vs Kwa) being used interchangeably, same with U’s and W’s (menawi vs menaui). There’s some T and D but I’m not sure if that’s deliberate or translation error. E’s and A’s being used (both dam and dem being used for ‘me’) which would normally be fine but SOMETIMES those vowel changes actually DO matter, like Cwa meaning ‘to’ and Cwe meaning ‘to him’ but cwé meaning ‘who’.
Anyways, it makes it real hard to know if I’m translating made up words correctly, and it’s frustrating.

*stares at Twitter* let’s see if the devs respond about my two questions. One, clarification on Constantin’s hair and eye color. And two, about all Yecht Fradi dialogue’s full translation.
Fingers crossed guys.

[Image Description: Petrus: And you dare to show such disdain towards me? I take it as a compliment!] My Love of Petrus started and solidified with this scene. Some Bridge Alliance fuckers who were just about to kill some Yecht Fradi who asked DS for help, we stopped them of course, but they (Bridge Alliance) showed disdain for Petrus openly, trying to bad mouth him to DS right there. And Petrus took it as a compliment. I felt a kinship with him right then. I was like…”OH WORD?” To bask in the disdain and hate from those you already despise. Hmmm yumyumyumyum yes feed me with your disdain.

Elements: Earth (rewritten)
Original | Ao3
The Yecht Fradi have their own funeral rites and customs. They return the dead back to the Earth, back to En On Mil Frichtimen. That could not happen given all that Constantin did, all that he harmed, and all that he threatened. Not to mention he still carried the Malichor in his blood.
The only option was the pyre to be purified by heat and flame; leaving nothing but ash. Which were further purified of sodium and then mixed with soil. There weren’t many plants that thrived in ashy Earth, but Siora helped De Sardet find one.
It didn’t sprout, despite De Sardet watering it and mixing more soil.
A week, a month, a season.
Nothing.
She couldn’t make a plant sprout from his remains. Her cousin was truly gone. Her despair renewed as though she’d killed him all over again.
Days passed when Siora knocked on her door, trying to draw her out. She’d not eaten, not drank, and turned all away.
“Go away.” De Sardet groaned and pulled her blanket tighter around herself.
“I will not.” Siora pushed in. Her steps light as she crossed to her bed. “Minundhanem, you must rise.” Siora pulled her blanket back and climbed into the bed beside her. Her arms unwelcome, and yet all at the same time she caved into them.
“He’s gone.” Her voice warbled and her gaze turned watery.
“He has been gone for many moons.”
“No!” De Sardet shook her head. “No…” She whimpered. “I couldn’t make it grow.”
Siora held her as fresh tears spilled.
When De Sardet slept, Siora slipped out of the bed. She descended down to where the pot lay. She circled it, before approaching. Her hands alight with magic, she sunk her hands in the ashy soil and attempted to encourage the seed’s growth. A sprout, even if it should die after, anything to soothe the grief that still filled her minundhanem.
Yet nothing came of it.
She strained, groaned, and screamed as she pushed too much, and still nothing.
Siora sat back, her own tears of frustration staining her cheeks. “You…” She grit her teeth. “You treated my people as equals to your own, unlike the other chiefs...governors.” She spoke, addressing the memory of Constantin. “Many times, I miss your kindness to my people. But I do not miss you as much as she, as much as my Minundhanem does.”
She wiped her cheeks and rose. “You had a bond stronger than blood, you were her brother. I have lost my mother, but I cannot imagine also losing my sister.”
She waited for something, anything from the pot, but nothing came. Siora turned away and faced De Sardet.
“Siora…” She rasped.
“I am sorry...I tried-” Siora apologized.
“No...no  I’m sorry.” De Sardet rushed to her, pulling her into a watery desperate kiss. Their hands tight against each other and seeking each other out. “Oh Siora…I’ve been so distant-I’m.”
“Cair to.” Siora pressed a kiss to her, silencing her apologies. She spoke soft words in her tongue, not translating but the sentiment was clear. De Sardet’s pain was Siora’s.
When morning came, she fed her. When the next night came, she held her. With each day, the grief lessened as she was there, constant and encouraging and whispering to her every night or making her call out as they joined as one.
The pot and the seed it held was forgotten until the day came that De Sardet decided to live with Siora, who had become the mal. Packing her things away, she stopped in front of the pot which surprisingly held a small sprout of a plant.
Transferred to a smaller pot, it came with her where it eventually bloomed. Siora and De Sardet spoke to the plant as though Constantin was still there. And he was in a way, watching over De Sardet and her Minundhanem.

Earth
The Yecht Fradi have their own funeral rites. They return the dead back to the earth, back to En On Mil Frichtimen. Clearly that couldn’t be the case here. So they set Constantin to the pyre. But his ashes, purified by flame were used to enrich a potted plant. Siora helped picked the moonflower for De Sardet. It held a permanent fixture in De Sardet’s home.
And later when De Sardet settled down with Siora, it came with her. Sharing a space in the hut where it bloomed every night as they comforted each other in their shared grief of lost loved ones. Siora mourned her mother and De Sardet mourned Constantin.
“I love you,” She whispered to Siora every night and every day and every time she spied Siora also talking to the plant as though Constantin was still there. And indeed in some ways, he was. De Sardet was glad for it because he made himself a carants to the natives and now De Sardet embraced her roots as surely as she embraced Siora. Her Minundhanem.
