“Runaway” solidifies Kanye West as a Timeless Artist

In the dawn of the 2010s, the rap scene was taking a new face, with many new rappers leading the way with more different and experimental sounds. Kanye West, a very prominent rapper throughout the 2000s, was leading the way with this new sound of using the now classic 808 sound in his album “808s and Heartbreaks”. In 2010, Kanye West released what may be considered one of the most influential albums of all time, “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy”, and with this album came “Runaway”. Through this emotion-inducing track of loneliness and the feeling of not being enough, Kanye truly solidified himself as one of the greatest artists of all time and arguably the best artist of our new generation.

The track starts off with the classic piano note that we all know today as the introduction of this song. The classic, single piano note goes on for around 20 seconds, followed by another set of notes that lead into the beautiful beat with various instruments. This introduction has a beautiful but mysterious sound to it that really makes you yearn for what's next to come. The background vocals follow the development of the beat, screaming “Look at ya, Look at ya” for several seconds, creating this feeling that everything is coming down because of what Kanye has done in his life. These background vocals are followed by Kanye singing and saying “And I always find something wrong”, even further showing that Kanye continues to blame everything falling down on him. This is even further exemplified by “You been putting up with my sh*t” and, “Baby I got a plan, runaway as fast as you can”, showing the fact that Kanye feels as if he is always the problem and is self-destructive. 

The song continues with this theme, explaining through multiple verses that Kanye views himself as a dirtbag who should never be allowed to see anyone and constantly screaming in the background that he is crazy and that the girl should run away from him. Another famous rapper, named Pusha T, hops on this track, explaining the dirtbag side of Kanye, saying many lyrics such as “p*ssy stay on my mind” and “you can leave or live with it”, referring to cheating on his woman. After the lyrics drop off around the 5:30 mark, the intro piano comes back, followed by distorted vocals in the background. The feeling this moment gives cannot be explained, so I urge you to listen to it yourself. This moment creates a feeling of reflection and other feelings that are hard to describe with words. In a sense, it creates this feeling of being alone in this world and not knowing how to react, and the distorted lyrics add to the effect by creating the sense that his vision is blurry and he has no idea how to move forward in his life.

People would argue that the song is too long, and 9 minutes makes it seem daunting to listen to as songs are generally 2-4 minutes long. This could not be farther from the truth, as every moment in these 9 minutes is able to invoke a feeling in your body, whether it be a sense of loneliness or the feeling of reflection on this song. Overall, this song is a beautiful masterpiece, and I urge anyone that has not listened to it to listen to it at the highest quality that they can find, as the very small features and moments of this song truly make up the song and are make or break for the song. This song for me has solidified Kanye West as the greatest artist of our generation. I also urge you to watch the music video.
