April 2023: This Weekend Around The House
We have a couple of bean plants that came up from seeds we planted last year:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We were about to leave to go to Plot 420 when my queen spotted this Cooper’s hawk on our neighbor’s hedge. It was hunting sparrows that were hiding in the hedge:
Tumblr media
Unidentified wild flower or weed... I haven’t decided which:
Tumblr media
Collards. They have what looks like caterpillar damage but no caterpillars are on them so another little mystery:
Tumblr media
Turnip greens:
Tumblr media
We used our compost when we planted our onions so, of course, we have volunteer tomatoes & cucurbits:
Tumblr media
We’ve got about a dozen of these plants growing underneath our bird feeders. I suspect they are a variety of ragweed but I’m going to give them a chance to prove me wrong:
Tumblr media
It is Spring so our cilantro is bolting & going to flower:

Random February Planty Things
We're starting to creep into garden planning season since I know that March is going to fly by so I ought to start early. I'm not sure where we are going to be this summer with the garden - we were starting to get into wild witch garden territory last year in spite of the drought.
If we're being honest, the drought encouraged the witch garden vibes as only my hearty native plants survived the spring deluge and then were capable of thriving in the exact opposite for the next four months. My Hoary Vervain (Verbena stricta) had an amazingly successful year and has taken the lead in the attempt to take over the entire garden.
Tumblr media
Both my Wild Lupine (Lupinus perrenis) and False Indigo (Baptisia australis) bloomed for the first time which was fantastic.
I think that I'm going to need some undercover for the front half of the garden (the back half is covered in clover and Creeping Charlie) so I bought some pink polka dot plant (Hypoestes phyllostachya) since it's all over the place for Valentine's day. My plan is to try to grow this as a fake perennial by taking cuttings of it every year to grow inside and plant it again in the spring. I recognize that it'll never survive a deep drought like we had last summer, but the plant is cheap enough to replace every year.
Tumblr media
(And the pink color will look so good against the purples and yellows of my garden)
Plus, it will never survive our winters. That's a huge factor for me. Eventually, these gorgeous tall native perennials will have taken back this space and rewilded it (good luck to any future tenant who tries to pull these out - they've got tap roots for days) but until then, I will stand as a guardian of this space.

flower symbolism makes me very very happy. i have no idea why but it makes something in my brain work.
Started in Europe
Conflicting accounts for who was first to write
1. Catherine H. in 1839 “The Language of Flowers” found in her book on the language of flowers, Flora’s Lexicon
Based on the LOF in Victorian England, France, and America
2. Mme. Louise Cortambert (pseudonym “Charlotte de Latour”) in her book “Le 8Langage des fleurs” which translates to The Language of flowers.
LOF is based on folklore, literature, mythology, religion, and the plant's physical characteristics.
Symbolic association from Chinese, Japanese, Middle Eastern, Greek, and Roman cultures/mythology/religion
Literature from Shakespear
Turkish language of flowers and objects (Selam)
Taking Turkish words for different flowers and finding which other words they can rhyme with and making a sentence out of it. (Armonde (Pear) rhymes with omonde (hope) so a rhyme for these two words can be Armonde - Wer banna bir omonde (Pear - Let me not despair)
The Turkish language came to Europe through two people, Seigneur Aubry de la Mattraye and Lady Mary Wortley Montagu. Husband and wife. They were Turkish embassies that went before the court of Charles XII of Sweden and shared the language of objects and in this case flowers.
Physical characteristics (root, stem, leaf, bloom?, and seed
Chrysanthemum/mums: A symbol of death and mourning, but also support and encouragement
Found in east Asia in grasslands, mountain slopes, riversides, fields, and seashores
In Europe, it means death because it was a commonly used flower to decorate graves in the 1700s. Asian Countries have a more positive meaning, used for family seals and pottery. (represents the turning of the seasons) November birth flower
Forget-me-nots: It can be used to symbolize remembrance – both during a parting or after death (bright blue flowers)
Europe, Asia, and Australia in wood/boggy areas
German folktale, where a dying knight threw flowers at his lady and said forget-me-not, the lady wore the flowers forever.
Hyacinth: Sorrow, I am sorry. Please forgive me.
The Mediterranean and tropical Africa and woodlands
From greek mythology, where apollo and zephyrs killed Hyacinth and his remains were turned into purple hyacinth in the sorrow of his death. (slightly toxic)
Yellow Roses: Said to symbolize friendship
Mostly in Asia but in other places to
Yellow is a very positive and happy color, In Korean and Japanese culture, it was used as a symbol of jealousy.
Daffodils: Symbols of rebirth and hope
Europe, Asia, Mediterranean meadows/woodland edges
The first flowers bloom in the spring, so it represents the new life after the winter months. March birth flower cause it usually blooms in march
Foxglove: Symbols of insecurity + many other things
Europe, the Mediterranean, and in woodlands
From Folk’s gloves (the fae folk), cautious tale to scare children from picking them. (Poisonous) also grown for the Virgin Mary (our lady’s gloves/gloves of the virgin)
Lily of the valley: Means the return of happiness
Eurasia, eastern North America, and in mountain forests
Used in religious ceremonies, it Represents Eve’s tears after she left the garden, the national flower of Finland, the May birth flower, is associated with Ostara, known for her humility (germanic mythology)
Baptisia (False/Wild Indigo): Symbolizes protection
Central and eastern north America near wood, meadows, stream
Associated with Venus (the Roman version of Aphrodite), (toxic but can be used as a noninflammatory, indigenous people use it for blue dye)
White orchids: symbolizes apology
Asia and in tropical forests
over 35,000 different varieties, based on the word orchis (which means testicles in greek because a writer said orchids looked like them) sign of wealth in the victorian era and in japan
Yarrow: symbolizes a wish for better health
Grasslands and forests, Eurasia
comes from the greek word here which means holy herb, neanderthals though they were a holy flower, druids used them in ceremonies, medieval Europe used them to exercise ghosts, dreaming means you'll receive good news, good for clotting blood
iris, arborvitae, and bluebell- are supposed to convey trust, friendship, and gratitude.
Carnations- innocence, remembrance
Hyacinths- deep sorrow, forgiveness, regret
White lilac- youthful innocence, new beginnings
Peonies- Family
Red roses- love, respect
Yellow rose- friendship
Blue tulip- peace and tranquility
Blue gladiolus- loyalty
Iris- hope
White tulip- I’m sorry
Lily- sympathy, innocence
Purple hyacinth- deep sorrow

01 May 2022 (3 of 3)
And the new plants in the front. In the side strip went a few more ajuga (mahogany variety with black-green leaves and purple flowers) to help fight the weeds coming in from the never-mowed yard of my still absent neighbors.
Got two tickseed plants. One went in the side yard and replaced the lavender plant that didn't come back, the other went in front of the lavender on the other side of the walkway.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sun plants! Got one more lantana (yellow-white color) and a deep purple heliotrope (smells so good). They're both planted near the lantana planted a couple weeks ago.
Near the front of the main bed, also put in a blue false indigo (baptisia australis)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shade plants!
Got two new ferns. The Brilliance Autumn Fern has a pretty copper color on new growth and supposedly in the fall too. The second one is a Herrenhausen (soft shield fern). I love the way its new growth comes up in those curls.
Still doing the seeds in the back, but I went ahead and got a pink foxglove (digitalis) plant for the front. It went behind the hyacinths and nandina.
And finally, with the goal of it spreading and helping to fill in the empty areas, I got a couple of creeping Jacob's Ladder. One went in the back corner at the same latitude as the Virginia bluebells, the other is along the front side edge, near the largest astilbe.

I’m currently working in a garden that is almost only boxwoods (Buxus sempervirens) and Annabelle smooth hydrangeas (Hydrangea arborescens ‘Annabelle’). It’s pretty but it’s so curated that it feels kind of oppressive. Luckily, the client inherited the landscape and when I mentioned it to her she seemed relieved that she had permission to not like the look. We’re leaving the structure in place but we’re adding in tons of pollinator plants with lots of color to cheer it up. It’s very 90s gardening magazine right now and she wants something more fun.
I’m adding in Sweet Joe Pye (Eutrochium purpureum), sweetspire (Itea virginica), creeping oregon-grape holly (Mahonia repens), coral bells (Heuchera), and false sunflower (Heliopsis helianthoides). They can all take dappled shade in our area and will hopefully liven up the color scheme with magenta and yellow.
Most of what I’m planting also provides great fall color and winter interest so that seasons actually mean something in this evergreen garden. For that purpose I’m also going to plop in about a million spring bulbs, they’re not native but at least they’ll look pretty and provide something for early pollinators.
Elsewhere, I’m going to plant purple poppy mallow (Callirhoe involucrata), blue indigo (Baptisia australis), rosemallow (Hibiscus moscheutos), snowberry (Symphoricarpos albus), aromatic aster (Symphyotrichum oblongifolium) and goldenrod (Solidago missouriensis) in sunny spots. In those areas the only plants are roses (Rosa), spirea (Spirea japonica), barberries (Berberis thunbergii), and some evergreens (Taxus, Pinus, Picea). The roses are alright, I personally hate spirea and barberries but they’re so established I don’t think we’ll be able to do much about them.
It’s a beautiful location and a very sweet client so it’s a joy to work in. I might have to post some pictures of the finished product.

It isn't fair, Rissa thought, that a monster be so beautiful. She watched in horrified fascination as individual hairs drifted slowly to the ground as they separated from her head at the slightest brush against his long, sharp nails. He was feeling a lock of her hair, letting it slide through his fingers, and she wasn't sure how much of it would survive. With an effort she dragged her gaze from the floating, falling bits of brown up to his face, the resentment about his beauty once again flashing briefly across her own.
With an effort she looked over his features. Everything was exactly as described, yet different from how she'd imagined.
“A large nose”, they'd said, but they hadn't explained that it was as sharp as a hawk's beak, she'd imagined something fleshy and bulbous. “Tall and thin”, her mind had translated to “emaciated and hunched to fit in small houses”, but his height wasn't bowed at all, at nearly seven feet he wouldn't have even fit in the home she grew up in, and his thinness wasn't that of malnutrition but the lanky strength of the messengers who came long distances by foot on behalf of the king. “Claws” had brought to mind the retractable hooks of a house cat, but his nails were as straight as her own...yet far, far sharper. Once again she watched the hairs still slowly sliding through his fingers, and falling to the ground. Nothing was moving as fast as it should have. “Bronze skin” and she'd thought of the tans her brothers and father had in the middle of summer, certainly the very idea that the monster would glitter with a metallic sheen was beyond imagining! His eyes...alien they'd said, and her mental image had been those of a lizard, not...not...
Blue sclara and elongated yellow iris with only a small slit of pupil, watched her. She couldn't tell what, if any, emotion were in such alien eyes...but they reminded her of the flowers that her younger sister had grown outside of their little hovel. Suddenly, belatedly, she realised he'd been talking. Wrenching her gaze from his eyes she shifted it to his lips; plump and shapely they seemed more like a woman's than a man's mouth. Still, long practise had her watch the shapes they were making, clarifying the jumble of sounds into understandable words.
“Ah, I have your attention.” His voice was beautiful, too, if odd; somehow rumbling and fluting at once it was almost a mixture of two sounds. A cello and a piccolo, perhaps? Rissa focused on paying attention to what he saying rather than the noises themselves, “You are not who I was told to expect, are you my little brown Baptisia?”
Rissa's mind flew away from her own predicament, and towards her sister once again. No, she was not who had been sent here, to this creature. Not little round Rissa, with her brown hair and brown eyes and brown skin. She didn't know what Baptisia was, but assumed it was just one more jab at her looks in a life of jabs. Her sister, sweet Cosima, was the beauty with skin like creamy tea, eyes as green as a stream reflecting grasses, and hair the light honey gold of the wild indigo that grew all over the town.
“No.” she agreed, hating the terror that ran through her voice. It was already ugly, she thought, almost as low as a man's and the roughness of the emotion did it no favours. Will he send me away? Chase after Cosima? I can't, can not, let that happen! “She's weak. Frail. She wouldn't last.”
The monster dropped her hair, cocking his head to the side and twitching his lips, “And how do you know that isn't what I like?” he asked, amusement quirking his lips to the side, “Perhaps a quick, lush meal, over in a flash?”
Rissa shuddered, thinking of her sister in this creature's grasp. Then shuddered again, thinking of her own fate to be. “We...we hear the screaming.” she mumbled, then swallowed and firmed her voice up, “We hear the screaming. It lasted months one year. You didn't take another one for two years. So...so. Here I am.”
“How altruistic.” he sneered a little bit, and to her horror his teeth looked just as sharp as his claws. It took everything she had to straighten her back and firm her own lips into a line. She just hoped that he couldn't see the shudders that wracked her ever so slightly.
“No...not really.” she admitted. Lying was stupid, lying to the thing that was going to kill you even more stupid. She hadn't really lied to get here. She'd just...knocked her sister's guards out, stolen the ceremonial clothing, and literally run up the mountain past the lines that marked his boundaries. Cosima, sweet and anything but stupid, had run the opposite direction as fast as she'd been able to. By that point, the fighting was over. They'd argued about what to do from the moment Cosima had been selected as sacrifice. Rissa was many things, and stubborn had to be about half of them, so in the end she'd won. “I don't really care what happens to the rest of them...just her. My sister.”
Those alien eyes looked at her again, brows lifted in surprise. Or perhaps mock surprise. She wasn't sure, and doubted she'd live long enough to ever know. His own hair swung around his shoulders, emphasising the movement of his head, in thin, fine ropes. She wasn't sure if they were like the dreadlocks some of the foreign traders who'd come through had, or if they were naturally so thick. If she were honest with herself, she didn't care either.
“What is to stop me from deciding that this breaks the agreement?” he wondered aloud, a rhetorical question, or is he actually answering me? And Rissa shrugged awkwardly,
“Nothing, I suppose. I'm gambling that either I'll meet the agreement and keep you bound here, or you might feel gratitude at me letting you go and spare my sister.” At that the monster laughed, and he offered her a mocking bow, which sent another frission of fear through her form.
“I suppose time will tell...although I warn you that I do not feel grateful for much.” He offered her his arm, and she tentatively took it. More afraid by what would happen if she spurned him than out of her own sense of gratitude.
“Are you going to kill me?” her nerve broke and she whispered the question. He looked down at her, brows raised in surprise again,
“Of course I am.” there was a pause of about three feet, closer to the great doors of his castle, “Eventually.”

Baptisia australis, False Indigo. The name comes from the Greek “bapto” meaning “to dip.” You can see from the word history where “baptism” comes from but the reference here is not to the religious practice. Instead, the plant has for centuries been used to make a blue dye to color linens and clothes. There is a plant actually called Indigo or more formally Indigofera, but Baptisia is far easier to grow. I doubt the plant ever made false claims about pretending to be true Indigo.
You can see from the photos that we have a yellow version of the plant as well as the standard blue. The yellow is quite nice but obviously the result of human interference with the natural order of things. The hybridizers have also made a pink version. Both plants are quite vigorous and spread nicely but the roots are quite deep so they are difficult to divide.
The plants break ground in early spring with rather delicate spikes that are easily broken if one is not careful weeding and mulching to get the bed ready for the growing season. The leaves then form into a nice bushy plant and then two-foot spikes shoot up with buds. The delicate flowers then open from bottom to top, one row after another. When the blooms are done, seed pods form which native Americans famously gave to their children as rattles. These last through the end of summer if the spikes are not cut. All in all, these plants native to North America put on a great show.
The plants always bloom when the Iris are going strong and Iris are tough to compete with. Maybe that's why I seldom see them in other gardens but I can't imagine doing without them. We have three blues and the one yellow. Of course, Indigo is actually between blue and violet on the rainbow color wheel. The word actually comes from the Greek for "dye" so I wonder whether the color was actually named after the plant. I always thought the word in the rainbow was just a vowel fill in so "roygbiv" could be easily pronounced and remembered.

language of flowers (Florist!Bucky x Reader) one-shot
Tumblr media
Title: language of flowers (Florist!Bucky) [Bucky Barnes As SERIES HERE] (AO3 Link) Pairing: Florist!Bucky x Reader Rating: General Audience, 1K Tags/Warnings: PURE FLUFF AND NOTHING ELSE Summary/Author’s Notes: Just a short, sweet treat, so you're not all going to die when I post the next ones in this series because they're all smutty as hell LOL (AO3 Link)
The last thing you expected when you walked into the flower shop was to see a lumbering tower of a man behind the counter. His brows were furrowed as he stared down at something on his desk, making him look disgruntled.
The door had been propped open so as you stepped inside, he didn’t immediately look up. You felt bad for interrupting, but you were on your way to work, where your best friend would be returning for her first day back since being in the hospital. You decided to take a look around first, to see if maybe you could get inspired.
“Hi, can I help you with anything?” A man’s voice startles you as you stare at the endless colours in the shop.
“Oh, um, hi! I didn’t want to bother you, so I started peeking around,” you smile. The man was definitely taller than you by a long shot, with broad shoulders and his hair tied back in a messy bun. His eyes were gorgeous now that you could see them, and he looked quite serene when his face wasn’t screwed up in concentration.
“Year end,” he explains. “Math makes me angry.” You laughed out loud and his abruptness, and before you could feel bad, he smiled back.
“Math makes me angry too, because I’m an accountant,” you offer.
“Oh God, math everyday? You’re looking for black roses, then.” You tilt your head, curious.
“Black roses?”
“They stand for sorrow and despair,” he tells you. “Among other things, but I think it’s fitting for your suffering.” You can’t help but laugh.
“Well lucky for me, I’m not here to buy sorrow flowers for myself! My friend’s first day back to work is today. What flowers would best say ‘Happy first day back from breaking your leg, don’t do it again, you idiot’ or, you know, something along those lines.”
His eyes shine and crinkle when he laughs, and it’s a beautiful sound.
“Unfortunately, there’s no flower that just carries the meaning of ‘you idiot ’, otherwise I’d fill my best friend’s apartment with them daily. But, we can go with daffodils? They symbolize hope or rebirth, but most people use them as a sign of resilience. They’re strong little guys that survive long winter storms, you know? We can throw in some heathers and baptisia, which stand for protection. Don’t want them breaking their leg again, and all. The purple will look nice with the white and yellow.”
“That sounds great!” You agree automatically, in awe of his expertise and how easily he tells you these facts that you never knew. “So, every flower has a meaning behind it?” He smiles at you and nods.
“Flowers are a language all on their own,” he states as he gathers the flowers needed for your bouquet. It comes together in his hands so easily that you can’t help but watch. For such large hands, they move delicately with practiced ease.
“How did you get to learning all this?” You ask curiously.
“My best friend? The idiot that I mentioned? His mother was a florist. I helped around her shop since he was allergic to just about everything, and he had asthma. I didn’t mind, she was basically my mother too.”
“That’s so sweet!”
“Sarah Rogers was one hell of a woman,” he agrees. You pick up on the was part - and also pick up on the fact that her name was the same as the sign outside. Obviously not a coincidence.
“I’m sorry,” you respond, but he shook his head, a few loose strands of his hair dancing in his face.
“She’d been sick for a while, but she always seemed more alive in her shop. When she passed… Well, it was devastating, but we wanted to carry on her dream, so here I am.”
“That’s really incredible.” He smiles at you before ringing you up, handing you the beautiful arrangement. “Thank you so much, this is perfect.”
“My pleasure. Hope to see you around,” he salutes before going back to his finances.
The next day, you get a surprise on your desk - looking around, it seems you’re the only one with a small box on your desk. In a neat, wooden square with a purple ribbon, are a few beautiful white flowers. Thankfully, there’s a note:
Calla Lilies - Magnificence & Beauty
It’s not signed, but you have a pretty good idea who sent them - and that made you giddy. Unfortunately, the shop was closed before you could get off work, but you vowed to stop in tomorrow.
The next day at work, there’s a tall, slender vase with two bright sunflowers on your desk.
Sunflowers - Adoration
You make it a point to rush over after work, and wait for him to finish up with the other customers before talking to him. He looks just as relaxed and confident as he did last time, his easy smile and kind eyes pulling you toward him.
“Hi again,” you greet him, watching in delight as his face lights up.
“Hi again,” he mirrors.
“How did you find me?” You ask him. His cheeks pink as he rubs the back of his neck, and you watch the flex of his arm, the strip of skin that shows above his jeans when his shirt rises.
“Not too many accounting firms nearby and, uh, only one [y/n] at them.”
“My credit card?”
“Your credit card," he confirms. "Sorry, if that's, uh, a bit strong. I didn’t mean anything by it, just thought you could use some flowers in the office and all, it’s - I -”
“Thank you,” you interrupt, with a big smile. “They were beautiful.”
“Yeah?” His eyes light up again before he asks with a wink, “does that mean I can keep sending them?”
“Actually, I have something for you this time,” you bite your lip nervously. “Since, you know, flowers have their language and all.” He looks amused as you reach into your pocket and hand him a perfectly folded origami rose, ruby red. His eyes widen slightly as he takes the delicate paper in his large hands and beams at it, like it’s the best thing he’s ever been given.
“So… Does this mean I get to take you to dinner?”
“How’s right now?” You shrug. He grabs his jacket, and your hand, in haste, switching the OPEN sign to CLOSED as an answer.

Combiners: Only obtainable by collecting all component Transformers and putting them on your field team. Combiners rely on high energy and trust to combine, and the power only lasts for a few minutes until they are drained. They will separate until the energy rebuilds. As a Combiner, they can collect massive amounts of resources with one swipe. To have the best results, take all components to the location of your choice and have them combine to then take on a heavy-resource area. They can destroy pretty much everything! Unlike regular Transformers, Combiners don’t have set color schemes, relying only on the individual components than being their own entity.
201. Devastator
202. Bruticus
203. Menasor
204. Superion
205. Optimus Maximus
206. Volcanicus

Plant of the Day
Sunday 7 June 2020
The flowers of Baptisia × variicolor 'Twilite' (Prairieblues Series) are getting ready to bloom. The pea-like violet-purple flowers have dramatic yellow keels. This hybrid of Baptisia australis, a blue flowered variety, and Baptisia sphaerocarpa, a plant with yellow flowers, is a long-lived and drought resistant plant. The pods and blackened stems make a feature for much of the winter.

Our BACK Garden - many photos have been posted featuring the small Flower Garden on the south side of the house. This posting is for the entire BACK Garden, just an overview.
1. The back of our house, which faces due west. Photo taken last evening from the Upper Meadow part of our neighborhood forest restoration project. That’s the Back Porch up above, beneath which is a bench seat, shade garden, and a bunch of pots. On the right up against the wall is the Flower Garden. And, in front, behind the split-rail fence that separates all our homes from the forest project, is the “Back Garden”.
2. Overall view of the Back Garden, 60′ x 10-12′ extending south to north along the west side of the lot. That’s a gravel Infiltration Trench along the inner side, which collects rainwater from the roof and allows it to soak into the groundwater table. The CONCEPT of the Back Garden was developed by both of us, working together for a change, just as we did with the Japanesque Front Garden. The idea was to create a garden that related to the meadow beyond the fence, but that could also house  a number of larger plants we brought from our former home in Bothell, WA. So it starts at one end with a riparian zone, spreads into a prairie, that interblends with Mediterranean plants, and ends in an alpine zone.
UPPER - the “Alpine” features a smaller-growing Baker’s Colorado blue spruce (Picea pungens ‘Bakeri’), a light green Mountain hemlock (Tsuga mertensiana), and an upright-trained ‘Thorson’s Weeping’ Western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla cultivar). There are also shrubs: colorful-foliaged summer heathers (mainly Calluna vulgaris ‘Firefly’), a rockrose, several smaller growing forms of mahonia, a Himalayan blueberry, a Crandall currant (fragrant, yellow-flowered hybrid of the Intermountain West native Ribes odorata), HUGE bushy hybrid penstemon - Garnet and Firebird, and underneath the hemlocks - the tall ground-cover Big Sur manzanita (form of Arctostaphylos edmundsii).
UPPER MIDDLE - the “Mediterranean” features magenta-flowered Sunset rockroses (Cistus x pulverulentus), various English and French lavenders, a mass of chrome yellow Moonshine yarrow, and a mass of variegated purple moor grass (Molina caerulea ‘Variegata’) interplanted with various crocosmias.
MIDDLE - the “Prairie” - this is the largest part of the garden, melding into the Mediterranean garden on the north. This features double curving bands of Rudbeckia fulgida ‘Early Bird Gold’ and Becky Shasta Daisy, clumps of standard purple moor grass, white yarrow, purple Verbena bonariensis, Russian sage (Perovskia atriplicifolia), a whale-shaped mass of variegated Northern hairgrass (Deschampsia caespitosa), blending into a mass of billowing Arkansas blustar (Amsonia hubrechtii). And...at the juncture with the Mediterranean garden is a “weeping” Deodar cedar, probably Snow Sprite, planted in a mound of rocks with penstemon, sedums, and sempervivums.
Interesting story here - this was originally an upright “tree”, planted on the hill above our Bothell house. One summer the top was whacked off during routine blackberry and Scotch broom control. But one horizontal branch was left. So, in 2018, I dug it up and brought it with us, intending it to be an interesting “bonsai” in the garden. Well, the plant had other ideas. In 2019, the horizontal branch started to rise skyward - that’s right - during the summer of 2019, we watched as it went from horizontal to diagonal 45 degree angle. By 2020, that horizontal branch cranked itself to a 90 degree angle and had become a tree trunk, pointing directly up. SHOCKED!
SOUTH END - the “Riparian Zone” - shown partially in the Overall and view of the prairie. This features a blue hydrangea, grown from a shoot off a hydrangea in our very first garden in Atlanta in 1995, an big bushy Amber Flower Carpet rose, a volunteer native pink-flowering currant (the BIG bush - Ribes sanguineum), a pair of evergreen, upright, willowy, multi-stem Sweetbay magnolias - (Magnolia virginiana Jim Wilson MOONGLOW), a native evergreen huckleberry (Vaccinium ovatum), and an assortment of perennials, including: Jupiter’s Beard (Centranthus ruber), Baptisia, foxgloves, various different crocosmias, Salvia nemerosa, and Geum x Tangerine.
Well that’s the Intro folks - I will feature each of the plants over the next couple of years. Cheers on this 245th anniversary of the independence of the USA, as it became known.

Who are the villains of the story?
I honestly don't wanna spoil TOO much of DOTS (as if I haven't spoiled Cobalt's arc already) BUT here's some pics :]
Arc 1 pulls a trick and it seems like Ruby's big rival is Cobalt, but really it's everyone and her versus this lady, "Aster Heliotrope"
Tumblr media
Not only does she have a fascination with Cobalt, but she also has an odd connection to Amethyst...
Arc 2 introduces these guys!
Tumblr media
They're called the Pyrrhic Paladins (Pyrrhics for short). They all rival the main Paladins, pretty much aiming to replace them as Neocity's heroes.
They're led by this lady, Pyrrha Amaranth:
Tumblr media
In rainbow order though, there's:
Orange = Oriole Valencia (he/him)
Yellow = Aureolin Goldenrod (he/him)
Green = Sage Mignonette (they/them)
Cyan = Ciel Spindrift (she/her)
Indigo = Nila Baptisia (she/her, though I was told to make her "femme but like. in a sheik loz sorta way where they seem more masc" so ???)
Pink = Alpine Mandevilla (he/him)
Pyrrha is basically the Mother Miranda of the group though, because she worships her:
Tumblr media
Considering the inspiration for DOTS are rainbows and the color wheel, she's a good antagonist for the Paladins lmao.
Arc 3 is... still vague but there's always her. She's important :]
Tumblr media
Aand one last bud who I can't say anything about:
Tumblr media
There's probably gonna be more along the way, but I haven't really confirmed/designed/made them yet :'D

Yellow false indigo, baptisia tinctoria
These two plants are in a yard in the neighborhood that I just love. The owner is a retired landscaper/grower for the big nursery here, and he once told us his yard is 17 years in the making. His property, about half an acre, is full and green, with tall, mature trees, shorter ornamental trees, shrubs, perennials, spring ephemera - he has a rock garden with succulents, a natural pond. Ah, i just love his property! And, best of all, NO GRASS TO MOW!
