the loona situation

there are some things that i think need to be said in the wake of the dispatch chuu article, and that i haven't seen anyone else directly address.

tldr for those who didnt see: loona had a system with blockberry where they shared costs equally, but revenue 70-30 in bbc's favor. this means that if the cost was $100, and the revenue was $100, loona and bbc each paid $50, but bbc earned $70 and loona earned $30, so loona went $20 more in debt to bbc despite the project recouping all of its expenses. these numbers only get worse the higher the cost/revenue ratio is. loona even pays bbc if there is zero revenue, because they get loona's portion of the cost.

functionally, this means that loona stays in debt. forever. according to bbc's numbers, the loona members - even after all of loona's successes and the fact that it makes a net gain now - are all still around $150,000 in debt to the company after 5 years. this is in addition to the other abuses standard to the idol industry, like starvation and mental abuse.

what i want to talk about is this: a series of facts.

1. many of the girls' families were concerned about the promises bbc made to their trainees and thought loona was a scam at best and a trafficking scheme at worst.

2. yves was promised debut within weeks of joining bbc. olivia hye trained for one day. loona 1/3 was flown all over the world for teeny tiny teaser videos. all of this was pre-debut. many of them talk about it seeming too good to be true.

3. go won and olivia hye have admitted they were already starstruck by older members of loona like heejin before even considering joining bbc. they saw their ads at the bus stop on the way to school. they wanted badly to be friends with them.

4. all contracts are individual. any revenue from one girl was given solely to her and applied solely to her own debt.

4a. chuu is the only member who's escaped her trainee debt. her revenue was not applied to anyone else's debts.

6. when a member is in debt to the company at the end of her contract, she can be compelled to renew to pay it back.

7. loona had the most expensive predebut in kpop history.

8. of the 12 members, only haseul, vivi, jinsoul, and yves were over south korea's age of majority — 19 in international age — when they debuted.

8a. of these 4, only vivi, jinsoul, and yves were 20. haseul had turned 19 less than four months ago. 9. kim lip was 18 when she debuted with 'eclipse.' chuu was 18 when she debuted with 'heart attack.' choerry was 17 when she debuted with 'love cherry motion.' go won was 17 when she debuted with 'one and only.' hyunjin was 16 when she debuted with 'around you.' olivia hye was 16 when she debuted with 'egoist.' heejin was 15 when she debuted with 'vivid.'

9a. yeojin was 14 years old when she debuted with 'kiss later'.

i'm begging at this point.

as much as i agree with your analysis and the fact that ctdenm seems to be treating the girls better, a part of me can’t help but worry that similar things are happening behind the scenes, much like how bbc seemed to be a relatively healthy and positive working environment early on

The myth that bbc was healthy and positive early on simply isn't true, sadly. Even recently, Vivi talked on the radio show she did about predebut stories, about how she learnt Korean quickly by arguing with staff so she could eat what she wanted amongst fighting for her other rights - and this would've been back in late 2015 early 2016. When trainee line (Basically oec, 1/3 and yeojin) were in the company before joining loona officially, that was when they were on the infamous 1 apple 1 egg a day diet. Even though yyxy were the most open about their mistreatment, that it was the worst during love4eva filming, and bad during hi high era and butterfly era, it was still bad before yyxy girls joined - the other girls are just far less open about it. This might be because the yyxy girls had such a short trainee period and therefore weren't as adjusted/indoctrinated into the trainee lifestyle to accept strict dieting and verbal abuse, or it might be because it's simply not in their temperament to talk about these issues, or whatever reasons they might have to want to share less in comparison to the yyxy girls, though yeojin and vivi have been opening up more about the past. I'm curious, did you have a specific time period where you thought BBC was a healthy working environment for the girls in mind?

If youre thinking about old loona TVs, BBC has always had staff that were very kind to the girls, that the girls loved and treated them well. The current CTD CEO, Yoon Doyeon is an example, as well as Lee Jonghyun, their old Project Manager and current Superbell CEO. At the same time they had to endure verbal abuse from certain other staff (this doesn't mean Jaden, there were other staff who were horrible or even worse than him), strict dieting and torturous schedules amongst other mistreatment that went beyond ordinary idol strictness. The loona TVs always made a deceptive effort to show the girls eating well early on, laughing and having fun etc, but we know it's a complete misrepresentation compared to what was happening behind the scenes.

When we have the girls transparently telling us via Fromm and Fab that CTD do not control or care what they eat, that they are 100% deciding for themselves, that exercise is up to them, that CTD's CEO paid for almost everything in Hyunjin's new apartment including a super expensive humidifier just because she asked for one, that CTD involved them in the album despite how quickly the album needed to be turned out because CEO cares about their creative input, it inspires a lot more trust.

I genuinely believe Doyeon is a good man who wants to take care of our girls. He gave up his job and started a company to become CEO in a role he had never tried before solely to give the 5 members a place where they would be safe and happy with someone they trusted (instead of risking getting taken advantage of again at another company) and could continue their careers, and has been listening to everything both the members and fans have been asking of him. I know Hyeju has said that this album prep era has been her favourite of her career, and I believe her. Right now the girls are actually enjoying their time in the US, eating whatever they like, having enough time for rest, actually seeing the sights of America this time. It's only the first stop but hopefully they can keep this up and have this experience knock the previous tour out of the water.

We can't trust a company 100% of the time without being there and witnessing exactly what's happening, but compared to Modhaus where we had Jaden lie to us about Jinsoul being involved in production in literally their first interview, exercises and diets being enforced, and OEC being marketed to NFT bros and military men, I just feel so much more confident about CTD's ability to treat the girls right.

I saw my girls last night and it was soo fun😭😭

They were soooo pretty and exactly what I expected

Yeojin was so small but so cute and funny

Gowon actually talked the most and led a lot of the talk portions

They said vivi looked like one piece chopper with her hat ctfu

The theater wasn't full but it filled up pretty well?? There were open seats here and there but it felt good, the energy of the crowd was rly good, gowon said we cheered the loudest 😏

I already knew they were only performing the mini album so I couldnt be disappointed. They filled up the rest of the time with like different talking segments. It felt like a comeback showcase and not a concert for sure

When they talked about album prep, yeojin talked about how she didn't like to eat while recording and the ppl were NOT happy, she kept telling us to wait to hear the full story first

I loveddddd the segment where they showed pics they took while in the area. You mean to tell me they were just walking around the pier and aquarium and shit and I could've seen them out in the streets?! Hyeju went to the store and went oh yeah I need a pic and snapped a selfie in the parking lot and yeojin snuck onto a private dock to take pics with sea lions and vivi had a pic at some barbie store and kept saying hi barbie

Almost cried during the random dance segment when they did why not and so what 😭 like the crowd was SCREAMING

The songs and choreos (for the songs that had one) were amazing, but the audacity to tour with 6 songs and to still save one of them for an encore?? They should've thrown in their predebut solos or a cover or two or like anything

All in all a super fun night and I love my girls 🥹 I'm so glad their tour has been going smoothly and they've been having fun. Obviously the thing with the short set list was a bit of a negative but they made the most of it, but that naturally won't be a problem for any future tours

🤭 tell you about a bias that came as a surprise: i think hyunjin and yeojin from loona 😁 like most gay women with eyes i started out as an yves bias, but idk i think these two girls work super hard as well and their solo albums are some of my fave out of the predebut era! plus obviously hyunjin is a little bit of a freak <3 and i dont know yeojin super well but i am always drawn to her particular stage presence plus she seems adorable hehe

👯‍♀️ send w/ a group, and I’ll rant about a favorite friendship: omg good choice doing superm since we have the friendship test video :P i think kai and mark are actually very cute they obviously have different approaches and experiences with the company but they really seem to care for each other. it cracks me UP that kai couldn't talk about mark without gassing up d.o. but i also think that is very telling in a good way about all of those dynamics. despite what my haters say i do respect mark for his work ethic and down to earthness and obviously kai works hard in a different way. im glad they got to work together and hopefully learn from each other :) honorable ment to taemin and kai, i dont know how close they are but kai is always always compared to taemin and it seemed like he used to not like it but they work well enough as colleagues now <3 interesting dynamic if maybe not an outright friendship

🌟 send w/ a group, and I’ll talk about my favorite era, concept, and/or album: ALSO good choice sending U for this question omg? my fave U concept will always change bc i think the construction and marketing of U units is generally well thought out, but rn i really like without you unit heehee... i think it is so genius to explore this overemotional 2000s(?) boy band rock type concept like its so high school musical to me as a song but obviously hsm as a brand was still able to deliver genuine pathos with a side of camp ... and i think the without you mv does basically the same thing with its much smaller amount of time. it deserves its laurels :) i will say i wish kun had been able to debut more officially and even on the chinese ver i dont think he was utilized as optimally as he could have, but he was singing alongside three powerhouses and kuns voice is relatively gentle so idk... i dont think he SHOULDNT have been there, but im sure there could have been a better way to navigate that balance and not just make him feel like an afterthought. AND WHY WAS WINWIN IN THE MV! cracks me up

to summarize a supposedly officially sponsored loona mobile game may be coming out but the preview didn’t include Chuu so people were speculating for the millionth time this year about whether or not she was still a member of loona, Yeojin talked about how she dieted a lot predebut to the point that she now has a very unhealthy relationship with food so people gave her shit for it, Jinsoul answered a fab message from a hanbit who said she should look into skin whitening product and she didn’t immediately shoot it down, Yves rejoined fab and has been ignoring all of it, loona island in flames etc etc etc

i wish i was a predebut stan 😭 i listened to chuu's heart attack in 2018 which i was OBSESSED with and it was my first loona solo and first song i heard from all of them but i didn't get fully into them until 2019 when they came out with butterfly :') then i became a bigger fan when so what and why not came out. my favorite solo always changes but rn it's let me in by haseul (my bias), vivid by heejin, and eclipse by kim lip

lissie: omg yeah! good for you for having chuu as your first solo. mine was kim lip's when i heard that the song is included in nasa's eclipse playlist. butterfly is such a good song to get into loona, especially the juxtaposition between it and hi high + i was there when they release the XnX teasers and my heart drops because of how great it is (i remember butterfly is my early bday present cause it was released d-1 from it)
