Tumblr media
It was the beginning of June, weeks away from O.W.L.S, which meant weeks away from another ending of a school year at Hogwarts. What bothered you the most wasn’t the fact that you had homework piled up to the ceilings, or that Snape has been snapping at you all week and took away 5 house points from you, or that you were drowning in a sea of textbooks and notes that you kept studying for your upcoming exams; it was the fact that you had barely seen Draco in nearly two weeks. You were so busy with schoolwork and focused on getting outstanding marks, you hadn’t even realized you were neglecting your own boyfriend.
Of course, the two of you would find each other in the Great Hall during breakfast and you’d give him a quick hello and goodbye kiss faster than he could even register what was happening and by the time he did, you were already out the door and rushing towards your first class. At this point, you were acting like the white rabbit from Alice in Wonderland, always frantic and in a rush. Your hair was wild and untamed, you had dark bags under your eyes from the all-nighters you were pulling, your robes and clothes underneath were in disarray and wrinkled.
To make it worse, you never let Draco study with you. He constantly asked and you always gave him the same answer.
“If I study with you, I’ll never get anything done.”
Which was true. He was very distracting with his quiet jokes in the library, or when he would look up at you with his sparkling gray eyes when you would try to ask him a question that just flew from your mind at the sight, or smile at you with a wide toothy grin that lit up the room when you got sidetracked and talked to him, or the way he rested his hand on your thigh when he would sit beside you while you quietly read or wrote but the only thing you could focus on was his fiery touch. Really, it wasn’t him who would distract you; it was you who distracted yourself with him. And that was evident when you tried to remember everything you’ve learned in the past school term and came up blank because for some reason your brain only retained information and memories that contained Draco throughout the past year.
So you figured a little time away from him wouldn’t hurt. Because if you didn’t pass these O.W.L.S, you felt like everyone would be disappointed in you, especially yourself. So you locked yourself away in your dorm and crammed and jam-packed your brain with information until you eventually passed out hunched over a book with drool blurring the ink on your pages. You avoided the library for studying, knowing Draco would go looking for you or Madam Pince would distract you halfway through your note taking to kick you out for the night.
Mornings always came the same, you waking up randomly over your desk a few minutes before breakfast and changing into a new pair of robes as quickly as you could while trying your best to smooth your hair down with your hands. This morning was different, however. You woke up to one of your roommates shaking you violently while she spoke your name loudly above you, but it sounded distant. You shot up in a hot flash, wiping your mouth of any saliva and groaning when you started to feel the pounding in your head that seemed to shake up your whole brain. “Thank Merlin, you’re awake!” Your roommate exclaimed in relief. “You looked dead, honestly. But class is starting in twenty and you’ve missed breakfast.”
“Twenty?” you frown, letting your swelling head fall into your hands. “I don’t want to deal with Snape right now, I feel awful.”
“I’m going to try to say this as nice as possible,” she sighs, placing a hand on your shoulder, “but it shows.”
“Thanks,” you scowl. You try to get up from your chair but gasp in pain as your muscles cramp at the movement like a rickety old man.
“Maybe you should go to Madam Pomfrey,” she suggests, trying to help you up but you shoo her.
“No, I’m fine,” you rush to interject. “I will not be missing Potions, no.”
She gave you a shrug, backing away in defeat as she let you rush to change into new robes and attempt to brush down the matted mess that’s supposed to be your hair but gave up halfway through and threw it into an updo. The headache was not a good combination with the scalp pain from combing out knots. Your roommate waited for you with pitied eyes, following closely behind you as you hurried out of the room and towards the exit.
You sped walked out with her but didn’t see the mop of platinum blond that was waiting for you outside the entrance of the common room. You had zero awareness of his presence until his hand had reached out to hold onto your wrist, stopping your near sprint towards the class. Your roommate stopped too, eyeing the two of you and the look on the Slytherin’s face before she continued walking.
“What? Draco, let go,” you move away from him and he quickly drops your arm. “I’m going to be late.”
You began to walk away from him, but he stepped in front of you, stopping you again.
“Why weren’t you at breakfast?”
“I overslept,” you answered gruffly. “Now, move! If I’m late, Snape will have my head on a stick.”
“Y/N, you need to slow down,” he frowns, “all this studying and rushing around everywhere is going to land you in the hospital wing. You look sick already, I’m worried.”
“I’m not sick!” You huff, throwing your head back in irritation. “If you really cared about me, you’d let me go to class instead of insulting me.”
“I’m not insulting you. Am I so terrible to tell you that you look like you’re about to pass out any second?”
“Yes, you are terrible,” you sneer, the pounding in your head was getting stronger each passing second. “Instead of-”
Your train of thought was violently stopped in its angry tracks, you stumble back and begin blinking hard at the spots that quickly started to dot your vision. Your hand instinctively reached out towards Draco, which he grabbed and hurriedly darted forward towards you, gripping onto you before you could meet the ground, your vision going black and your consciousness out the door.
Draco felt himself begin to panic. He promptly began to feel guilty, feeling like it was his fault that you even fainted in the first place because of the argument he had accidentally started.
He gathered you up in his arms, one arm sliding under your knees and the other under your neck as he swiftly picked you up and began his frantic journey towards the hospital wing.
When he got you to Madam Pomfrey, she instructed him to set you down on one of the beds and kicked him out of the room while she started her treatment. His heart was beating so fast, he wanted nothing more than to stay by your side so he halfheartedly threatened her with his father and she ended up letting him stay with a deep sigh while he stood idly by your bed. When Madam Pomfrey was done, she left the two of you alone. Draco wasted no time in sitting at the foot of your bed, his hand finding its way into your cold one that laid limply beside you. He watched your sleeping figure with a relief as he noticed that whatever Pomfrey gave you had speedily began to affect you. Your skin no longer looked ghastly and dull, but healthy again and tinged with pink. The dark circles underneath your eyes had faded just a little bit, leaving only slight bags as you finally slept.
He waited maybe 12 hours for you to wake up. After missing his first class, he had decided to go to the rest of his classes as Madam Pomfrey swore to him up and down that you would not wake up any earlier. He begrudgingly obliged and skipped all his meals instead to spend his short free time with you. When his final class ended, he almost ran back to the hospital wing. He occupied the rest of his time with a book he had found thrown somewhere around the room. The book was long forgotten the second he felt your hand twitch and your body begin to stir, your tired e/c’s looking around the room in confusion before landing on him. He scooted himself closer to you, brushing a loose strand of hair out of your face as he looked at you with pure concern. It was the same look he had when he confronted you earlier and with that one look, you were able to recall everything that had happened before your collapse.
“I’m sorry I said you’re terrible,” you croak out sadly, your hand wrapping around his wrist and squeezing it gently.
“I’m sorry I made you faint,” he says. “How are you feeling?”
“That was my own fault,” you chortle, “but I feel really good. I know I fainted and all, but I feel much better with whatever Madam Pomfrey gave me.”
“I can tell,” he smiles, moving himself a little back as you sat up with a newfound strength. “She said you can leave when you wake up.”
“Good, now help me out of this bed.”
Draco took your hand and you hopped out of bed excitedly, turning towards him and giving him a tight hug that he returned twice as hard.
“If you’re not too tired, can I show you something?” He asks from above you, his arms still wrapped strongly around you.
“Yes, please,” you answer with a nod against his chest.
Draco steps away from you before taking your hand and walking the two of you out of the hospital wing and towards the stairs that led to the astronomy tower. When you reached the top, huffing, and puffing, he asked you again if you were okay to which you answered with an eager nod.
"Tonight is a blood moon,” he smiles, pointing up towards the very large orange and reddish moon in the starry night sky. It shone brightly but still gave off little light in its wake, the astronomy tower was almost dark, but you still managed to see the blond perfectly, he was watching you with a happy and loving glint in his eyes that you were able to notice. “I was planning on asking you to see it with me tonight, but we kind of ended up elsewhere.”
You threw yourself into his arms, your face buried deep in his robes and the heat radiating off his chest warmed you up in the comfiest way.
“You’re the best, Dray,” you mumble into the cloth of his robes, the clothing vibrating underneath you as he chuckled. You pulled away and gazed up at him, smiling when he placed a kiss on your forehead.
The two of you unknowingly began to sway back in forth in each other’s arms, his hands resting on your lower back while yours were looped loosely around the back of his neck.
“You scared me today,” he begins quietly, “and every day since you’ve started your studying.”
“I know,” you frown, “I’m sorry.”
“Promise me you’ll stop overworking yourself,” he says softly. “I know you’re scared you’ll fail, but I promise you won’t. You’re one of the smartest people I know and I know you’ll get outstanding marks on everything.”
“You think so?” you ask hopefully, your eyes trained on the burnt orange moon as you took in his words.
“I know so.”
A few more minutes of silence pass by, your head now leaning against his chest as the two of you still danced silently. And as if he read your mind, Draco began humming a soft and off-pitch rendition of Claire de Lune. You would laugh every time he forgot a note and would go silent for a moment before backtracking and humming it correctly.
You don’t know how long the two of you stayed up there dancing slowly in each other’s arms with Draco trying his best to hum the top classics of the classical’s, his lips finding yours every now and then to kiss you longingly and tenderly, but one thing was for sure; it was bliss.
Maybe distracting yourself with Draco wasn’t such a bad thing.

.2.
You came out of the office still shocked, your body moves a bit stiff. Sukyeong was giving you a wary look from behind of her glasses and watched you all the way till your butt touched the cushion of your office chair.
“You look like you have been sacked,” she commented, unable to keep it in.
Gulping, you realised your throat went dry. Reaching out for your tea cup, you picked it up to take a sip but noticed it was empty. Right. You have spilled its contents on your skirt that still had the wet stain.
What do you do now? Why aren't you feeling as good as you thought you would after receiving your first promotion?
Perhaps you needed some time. After all, the result would be shown on your bank account, not through your emotions or the behaviour of your boss.
“I-I got promoted,” you finally let out, staring at Sukyeong.
To say she was surprised was an understatement. Her eyes widened and she took her glasses off to get a better look. “Don't tell me it is because of Bina.”
“It is,” you mumbled. “Did you know she got fired?”
“Oh, yes, I heard but so suddenly? Nobody knows why.”
“Yeah,” you raised your eyebrows, nodding, before telling the truth “She got pregnant. That's why.”
Sukyeong's eyes darkened. “No way! No freaking way! You have got to be kidding me.” She went silent for a second, obviously the information still loading in her brain. “He fired her because she got pregnant? Is he stupid?”
“Apparently, the company doesn't want a useless workforce.” You went on explaining the whole meeting, ending it with his proposal (decision) to promote you to her position.
Sukyeong was a very kind and genuine person at heart that rarely showed negative emotions. It was quite shocking to see her explode (in a neat manner) about the whole situation.
Eventually, she looked at you, then at the phone resting on the top of your table. “It is good news for you, though. This way you can lead a more comfortable life with Baekhyun. You should let him know right now. He will be so happy and proud of you.”
You bit your lip. Sukyeong wasn't informed about the little condition called pregnancy that your boss made you indirectly promise. You felt it was too personal and uncomfortable to tell her. Or maybe you were scared she would tell you how stupid and out of your mind you were.
“I will tell him,” you heard yourself mumble, zoning out into your little bubble.
You didn't tell him when you came home. It wasn't like you didn't have enough chances throughout the day. You and Baekhyun were constantly in touch through your phones, writing silly messages or small updates on what the other was doing.
You could have told him then.
Yet, as you were preparing your evening tea and heard him listing through his textbooks, there was not a chance to even start the conversation. He needed to be focused.
And anyway! How inconvenient would have the whole situation been? There was no way you could afford to… start a family. He knew it. You knew it. It would be a massive burden for both of you; physically for you, for him financially. He needed to finish his PhD. No time for children. He needed to focus on his career in hapkido. No time for children. He-
You hissed in pain as you, guess what, spilled your tea straight on your left hand. You weren't even holding the cup; you hit it with the back of your hand by accident, causing Baekhyun to look up from his textbook, his forehead slightly scrunched.
“You alright, love?” he stood up from the small table, walking to you.
“Mhm.” You took two quick steps reaching for the tap, letting cold water relief the throbbing skin.
Baekhyun was next to you within a second. He grabbed your hand, quickly looking at it. “Shit, Y/N, that's really bad,” he murmured seriously while observing the skin.
“It's nothing, c'mon,” you answered, playing it cool by giving him an eye roll with a smile.
“That could easily be a bad burn,” he placed your hand back under the water and looked at you. “Be careful next time.”
Forcing a bigger smile, you nodded but-
“Is something wrong?” He caressed your back gently. “You are not one to be clumsy usually.”
“All is good,” you nodded cheerfully, maybe a tad too fast.
He was analysing you. He knew you like the back of his hand. “Did the idiot try something at work again?” he asked, his voice lower now.
“What? Oh, no, not at all, please!”
“Why are you laughing like I just guessed correctly?”
“Because you haven't guessed correctly, hihi.”
“So there is something to be guessed,” his eyes shone in challenge.
“No, Baekhyun, there isn't. However, you will need to guess correctly at your exams, so go back to studying. I'll prepare some fruit for you.”
“Not with that hand,” he argued, closed the tap and grabbed a towel to dry your hand. “You will sit next to me and give me strength while I'm studying.”
You snorted. “I am pretty sure that will be a productive study session.”
He raised his eyebrows at you with a wide smile.
You did end up studying. Baekhyun was preparing a report to be handed in next week about his current workplace where he was teaching hapkido. The wonderful way his experiences, memories and plans were coming out of his mouth while you were trying to type it all out on his laptop was something that made your heart warm. Baekhyun was satisfied where he was in life. You don't need anything more.
“Now the elementary school one,” he said, deep in thought as he was going through his notes. “The kids are sometimes a pain in the ass. Therefore, a hapkido professor-to-be shall have high levels of patience while kindness and eternal love shows through his guidance in order to reach the utmost peace while practicing hapkido.”
You were typing quickly until you realised what he was dictating in the academic language. It made you look up at his shiny eyes. “Ya, what is this. Your sarcasm will not go unnoticed with-”
He bursted out into fit of loud laughters, giggling on your expression. “I was wondering if you are even listening to what I am saying.”
“Of course I was,” you smacked his arm. “Kids. Talking about kids.”
He came closer to your face on all fours like a puppy he was. “I want to have some as well.”
You gave out a snort though your heart jumped in anticipation before your entire positive mood deflated with the situation you suddenly appeared in at work. “Some? It's not like asking for apples, you know, my love?” you responded gently, quickly glancing at his stretched out lips. You glanced back at his eyes just to catch him also stare at your mouth.
“You haven't thought about it at all?”
Oh no...
“How did you get to this topic? We were talking about kids in your hapkido class,” you tried to avoid the inevitable.
He shrugged, biting his lover lip as he examined your eyes now. You could feel his breath on your lips. “Exactly. You know how much I adore to teach that class. University students are fun and I can seriously practice hapkido with them, lead them to something much better, but with kids… Maybe I'm just crazy,” he laughed quietly, closing his eyes as he pressed his forehead to yours, gently shaking his head, “but I can't stop imagining us having a baby.”
Unconsciously, your breathing grew frantic, the idea being way too pleasant.
“And yeah, it isn't easy but… I love you so very much,” he breathed, raising his head, his eyes still closed as he crashed his lips onto yours in a slow, lazy kiss as if he was too drunk on love to even think straight. Your heart responded right away, opening your mouth for him so that he could devour all of you right then and there.
Countryside people had one thing in common - their own kids came usually early on in their lives. It wasn't out of place for Baekhyun to want to start a family at such a young age. It might have been strange for city people who were too busy building up their own life, though.
“Baekhyun,” you murmured, and he pecked you twice to show that he was listening as he opened his eyes to look at you. You didn't know yourself why you said his name when obviously you had nothing to reply. Now it was confirmed that if you told him what happened today would break his heart. Just like it broke yours. But you were not well-off now. Not entirely poor but… not far from it either. There had to be sacrifices made in order to get a better life for yourselves first. Touching his cheek lovingly, you whispered: “Your report.”
You couldn't sleep the whole night. Not only because you were nervous about your upcoming day in work, given the new workplace would require much more responsibility (and we weren't even talking about the person you had to skip around now), but also the slight pain in your thighs signalling the upcoming period was making you uncomfortable. It was still early to get out of bed but you were worried you would forget to pack some pads in case it would surprisingly arrive at work. Oh! And you kept replaying Baekhyun's words from yesterday. How you saw the softness and desire in his stare. The honesty.
Guilt was eating you away.
Later during breakfast, Baekhyun was unusually silent and even though you tried to make some conversation with him, he wasn't in the mood. Must be the report, you thought as you quickly washed the dishes while he was quietly drying them off with the kitchen towel.
“You should go get ready, it's already 15,” he said, not looking your way.
You placed the last dish in the dish holder. “It's okay, I can leave at 45.”
Shit, how would you explain him the whole situation? He already did not like your boss (as if you did) yet here you were, hiding the truth that he will pick you up and bring you home.
“How come?” he asked, taking the dish, carefully sliding his hand with the towel under it over the surface, the action making a muffled sound. “You always panic about being late.”
“Well today I decided I can be late,” you said, smiling at him.
The corners of his lips lifted, but the emotion didn't quite reach his eyes.
“Are you okay?” you asked him, as you dried your hands in your pyjama pants. You had to wash them later anyway.
He nodded, winking at you which gave you enough reassuring for now.
“I will prepare your lunch box, go get ready, love.” You squeezed his arm.
He finished his task before wordlessly leaving.
Standing silently in the kitchen for a few more minutes after he left made you feel how strong of a slap you just received from him. You hated when he shut you out, when he was deep in his brain mulling over things you had no idea about.
You had no idea he was thinking so much about starting a family with you. You had no idea the kids in school were reminding him of how much he desired to create something so precious together with you.
Shuffling from the tiny bedroom snapped you back to reality, and you quickly put together Baekhyun's lunch so that he could leave.
“Anything you want to tell me?” he suddenly approached from behind, his voice serious.
You turned to face him. “What do you mean?”
“You… you are acting strangely,” he explained, not moving from his spot.
“Baekhyun,” you said, taking the kimbap from the fridge and placing it into the blue lunch box that you wrote “for my only love” on in a cute handwriting. “All is fine. What is making you so upset?”
Your brain kept beeping the entire time, screaming “warning” but you went on. Like an idiot you were. You knew he was a sensitive person, so he was taking the slightest off-behaviour in the wrong way. He could be very vulnerable despite his tough physique and self-confident talk.
He sighed, running his hand through his hair. “You know what? Let's talk once you're home tonight.” Taking the lunch box from your hands, he left.
The ending was a silent closing of the entrance door and the beep of the lock.
It was uncomfortable in the car to say the least. Sitting in the same car, on the same backseat with your boss... Well, concentrating on the work you had to start doing was hard.
He kept asking how your day went yesterday, if you felt good about the promotion, and what would you do to make the work and your goals more effective. Interestingly, being under pressure made you form sentences that had the exact meaning to those in his brain. Whatever he wanted to hear and you knew would please him, you would say it.
Back at work it wasn't much different, but it sure was a much longer day with sudden new tasks and meetings to attend to. What made it very frustrating was that your boyfriend didn't write a message even once. He would always write asking whether you arrived to work safely since you had to take transportation, but not today. Your phone was lying there, no beep, no ring.
“Did it ring?” you asked Sukyeong breathlessly as you rushed to your table after another meeting. You were about to go to another one.
“Nope, sorry,” replied Sukyeong regretfully, sending you a pout before she focused on her computer screen again. “What happened anyway?”
You groaned in reply, the office phone ringing. You knew who was on the other line so you picked up while unlocking your own phone. “Yes, sir, I am bringing the documents for signing now.”
“Alright.” The boss hung up.
“Pff, alright,” you mocked, while frustratingly huffing when the kakaotalk had no unread messages. Especially from Baekhyun.
Unfortunately, you had no time and had to leave a fast message:
“Honey is all good on your side?”
By the time you finished that day at work, there was still no reply. He didn't even read the damn message.
You came back home much later than usual, very tired and mentally drained. You were hoping Baekhyun wouldn't be asleep.
Silently making your way past the kitchen that was right at the entrance door, you saw dimmed light coming out of your shared bedroom. Right after a book page being turned. Ah, he was studying. Once you appeared in front of the bedroom, he raised his head, tired eyes focusing on you.
“Hey,” you said quietly, unsure what to expect from him.
He bit the inside of his cheek. “Hi.”
Putting down your bags, you took off your blazer before walking to him to give him a peck. But he seemed pissed. “Where were you till now?”
His tone made you stop in your tracks. “I had to work late. I sent you a message which you didn't bother open either obviously,” you snapped, not liking his attitude.
“You suddenly work this late? It's eleven in the night, Y/N,” he snapped back.
Emotions were flowing too fast in your veins, making you momentarily dizzy. “I am also trying to make a living here, you know.”
“Oh yeah?” he questioned, as if you were lying. “Making a living, is it?”
His behaviour didn't add up in your brain. “What the hell is your problem, Baekhyun? Just come at me, spill it all out. I'm not in the mood to be guessing what pisses you off so much since yesterday,” you said coldly, still standing few feet away from him.
He suddenly stood up, taking two steps towards you. He opened his mouth to say something but nothing came out as he focused his gaze on your eyes.
“What is it?” you demanded when he still didn't say anything.
“Did you have dinner?”
“What?” you exclaimed, disbelief written all over your face. You grabbed his face with your hands and made him focus his gaze on you. “What is the matter Baekhyun? What did I do so wrong? Don't do this to me, please.”
“I just,” he started, closing his eyes and going silent. Four heartbeats passed when he whispered. “I don't want to talk about this right now.”
Your hands fell to your sides and you felt a burn behind your eyes. Staring at him a little longer, you finally turned around, stripping to take a shower. You threw your clothes on the floor, noticing the period pads you forgot this morning despite how much you were reminding yourself to take them. Because of the morning argument and busy hours at work, you forgot your period was not coming. Still. Maybe tomorrow, you thought.
Half-way to the bathroom in your bra you turned. “For your record, I did not have dinner. Was too busy,” you muttered the last sentence and you slammed the bathroom door shut.
Fuming from these short-lived conversations full of suppressed anger made you very, very upset. But thankfully, a hot shower was something that could ease your mind. Although you couldn't stay under the hot waterfall for too long, you made sure to put on ton of scented shower cream and made sure you enjoyed every molecule of the shower.
Once finished, you turned to grab a towel just to find a pair of hands holding an open towel for you to be tucked in. You locked eyes with Baekhyun, not sure what to say or do.
“C'mon, you will catch a cold,” he ushered, shaking the towel slightly.
You stepped closer, not meeting his eyes, somehow feeling shy being all naked in front of him. He has seen you like that countless of times, but it still had a strong intimacy impact for you.
He wrapped the towel around you, massaging your shoulders. “I'm sorry,” he whispered in your ear from behind.
Tears that threatened to spill before now rolled down your flushed cheeks. You turned around, hugging him. “I can't take us fighting.”
“Me neither,” he said, squeezing your aching body.
You let out a quiet sob. “Don't shut me out.”
It took him a few heartbeats to reply.  “I won't. But you better not do it either.”
This made you weep just a bit harder because you already have.

AN: This chapter is kind of a filler but there is a bit of character developing that is super important I guess. Also, there like one curse word in here. And lastly, I have two drabbles planned between this chapter and the next one so watch out;
-
Slytherin house members were seldom caught unprepared, if they were, they’d just fake it until they were out of the situation at hand but every single person was thrown off guard when James sat right in front of Lyra, Dominique and Michelle that morning.
“Lyra, Nick, Michelle, long time no see, ladies.” The older girl scoffed slightly before answering.
“I do wish it were longer, Potter.” The boy laughed to cover up his hurting.
“Ha-ha, Why so hostile?” Michelle rolled her eyes very hard at this; even she knew what had happened between them.
“Your face leaves a bad taste in my mouth.”
Once upon a time, all she wanted was to make amends with him. He used to be her most trusted friend, the one she could count on at all times but then he let his father’s prejudice blind his judgments and the rest was well known amongst the students at Hogwarts (even between the Wizarding society there were stories and the like about the Scamander girl and the eldest Potter child). James was a bit stunned by the girl’s answer but he persisted nonetheless.
“I was just wondering if you already had a team for the competition.” Boy, I am one of the reasons this whole thing is happening.
“Yeah, I’m in a team with my brothers and Castor but even if I wasn’t, what makes you think I’d want to be anywhere near you?” The girl raised a perfectly plucked eyebrow and placed a slight smirk on her lips. Slytherin girls had perfected charms and spells to improve their appearance in any way they wanted to, but before getting access to the spell book (yes, they had compiled everything into one book to make everyone’s life’s easier) girls were taught that the only person that should care about the way they looked were themselves, other people’s opinions be damned.
The boy stalled upon this blunt answer, practically everyone loved him so why the person he wanted to like him the most just couldn’t? The girl smiled to her friends before continuing to talk.
“In fact allow me to demonstrate the distance I’d like to exist between us.” She then got up and walked away, linking arms with Carter and Fred, chatting about Merlin knows what. James sighed before looking around awkwardly at the several groups spread at the table, he knocked on wooden tabletop lightly with his knuckles before leaving, sending an uneasy smile to his brother.
Michelle was happily seating with her group, another girl, a boy and Lane, who preferred to be called by name only, no pronouns. She loved to meet different people and she had to admit that The Founders had mastered a brilliant plan whoever they were. Carter and Fred discussed their theories with Lyra without giving away too much, the girl barely paid attention, she just smiled to everyone and greeted everyone as they went. In a sense, she reminded people of Lily Evans, with her kindness and her overall academic brilliance; even Hermione was impressed by the girl who was an even better student than herself.
Suddenly the girl split from the pair to go rescue her brother, Lorcan, who was backed into a corner by a rather insistent girl, of course she would rescue him but first she’d have a little fun just watching the situation. Poor girl, my brother’s not into girls. Or boys, while we’re at it.
“But why won’t you just be a part of my team? Or go out with me?” The brunet girl whined.
“If it makes you feel any better, I don’t want to go out with anyone for that matter.” She then looked confused. “I’m ace, ya know?”
There it was, the inevitable confusion before the person turned around and left. Most people knew about Lorcan’s sexual option but very few still insisted on hitting on him, it was a rather awkward situation for everyone involved, Lyra decided to swoop in to save her brother from the girl still nearby.
“Brother Dearest, can I steal you for a while?”
         “Please do.”
A few days later the competition was well underway, since it was a Wednesday it meant that it was studying day. Not really day more like an hour or two but it was an event organized by the prefects for fifth and seventh year students to help them revise for their upcoming exams; it happened on the great hall since there were a lot of students and they would never fit inside the library.
On the head of the table that was usually occupied by the Ravenclaw, Lyra sat with Teddy, Augusta, Castor, Cassandra, who despite being a sixth year was taking seventh year Herbology and Molly and Rafael revising the things they had learned over the years. Despite it not being her forte, Lyra was rather good at this subject and it never hurt to learn a little more.
“There are many more uses to Mandrake than reversing petrification.” Said Rafael, who was the best student when it came to mandrakes. Each of them would pitch in things or facts they thought useful.
Lyra sat between Teddy and Molly as usual during the study sessions. Molly had a very neat style of note taking and would always ask the questions she was too shy to ask, plus she had this weird ability to sense when they were getting to tired to the study be of any use, while her best friend would act as her personal heater, specially in weather that was growing colder by the minute, how she managed to always be so cold was beyond anyone’s understanding. The girl nestled her hands between Teddy’s, hoping to steal some of his warmth.
“Oh fuck Lyra, your hands are cold.” The girl in question had a long sleeved shirt on, her uniform sweater, one of Lysander’s zip-up jumpers and a leather jacket she had stolen from James’s house one summer when she climbed to the attic trying to avoid him.
         “Aren’t they always honey?”
“Sometimes I wonder just how dead you are for your hands to be this icy.”
The position they were in, with her back leaned partially against his chest, his hands on her lap made for the perfect way to communicate in a hushed manner  without disturbing the rest of their friends. No one found the way they were sitting weird, it was normal for them to always be touching in one way or another.
“You are so funny, Edward. Bite me.” Mostly, their friendship was purely based on sass and mischievousness but lately there had been a change in the air between them. Sure, Teddy knew he liked Lyra in a different way for a couple of years, the feeling growing through the years. Lyra, however, despite calling herself a “hopeless romantic” had never, in a million years, seen herself falling for her best friend yet here she was, her heart beating slightly faster and her cheeks completely flushed by the usual way they sat.
“Okay then.” The noy decided to test the waters a bit and took the girl’s words literally. He gently placed his lips on what little skin of her neck had been left exposed, the kiss was brief but it left them both wanting more.
         “What the hell was that?”
“Honestly, I don’t know.” The girl in his arms let out a content hum.”
“Whatever it was, I liked it very much.”

Chapter 16: Panic! At the Dorms
Iida wakes up groggy and achy from the night before, in which he had no recollection of after getting Ita the drink. His vision is blurry but he can tell he’s in his room from the silhouettes of his furniture and door rack. He checks the time from the digital clock on his desk, it’s 9:55am, not late but it’s later than he usually wakes up. He sits up and sees that he’s still in his dance outfit but with his shirt half unbuttoned with some stains, bowtie and coat off. Reaching for his glasses on his nightstand, he wonders how he got in his dorm when the after party was in the other building. Rubbing his eyes and putting on the glasses, he sees his shoes and coat tossed about along with a black purse, white fur coat, gold heels and bra. His eyes widen with fear oh my lord! he thought I drunkenly made a huge mistake didn’t I?! He hears a soft moan right next to him, upon looking, there was a body shaped lump covered in his blanket. Lifting the blanket slowly, he discovers Ita soundly sleeping with her make up smeared and hair slightly undone. Iida’s mind was racing with all the possible things that could’ve lead them to this as he got up to gather himself. Contemplating whether to wake her or not, she wakes up on their own. She yawns and stretches before opening her eyes, first thing she sees is Iida standing looking mortified.
“Oh morning Tenya hehehe I see you woke up and want some answers”
“How can you be so causal!”
“What? causal? about what?”
He picks up my bra “THIS! What did we do that lead to THIS” he said while chopping at my bra.
“Long story short: you got sloppy, puked, cried, I took care of you, teleported you here, got you comfy and tucked in, I decided to get comfy and sleep next to you... that’s it”
He turned completely red “Oh no! I can’t believe I gave in and drank last night” he put his head in his hands “please tell me I didn’t do anything stupid.”
“You didn’t actually” I said sitting up on the bed “we danced alot, you swatted away any boys that got too close to me on the dance floor OH! my favorite part was when you kept calling me pretty lady and placed me on your lap so everyone knew I was your date.” I blushed as I remembered “it was really cool of you fending off all those guys.”
Iida suddenly didn’t feel any regrets of the night before, before he could say anything, there was knocking at his door.
“who is it?”
“Iida-kun! She hasn’t returned!” the muffled voice of Midoriya broke through
“who hasn’t returned?”
“Palma-san! nobody has seen her come back from the dance and theres no answer at her door.”
Iida looked at me and hesitated for a moment “Um, ok! Start a search as I get dressed!”
“Ok! I’ll tell the others.”
I was shocked at the display “why did you lie to him?”
“Because, I know you’d probably want to teleport in and make a whole excuse like you did before” he explained himself as he changed out of his dress shirt “I also don’t want people to think the wrong way, you know I wouldn’t ruin your reputation!”
My heart dropped at his words, he was coming around with me being the clever mess I am. I jump up and hug him “Thank you! You’re amazing Tenya, what did I do to deserve a friend like you?”
He hugged back “You gave me one of my most precious school memories, it’s the least I could do for giving you so much trouble last night.”
“Right, well” I let go and gathered my things “I’m gonna teleport to my room, you better run out there and go look for me.” I teleport to my room, the panic stomping outside my door startled me a bit but my reflection was scarier. “Oh jeez no wonder Tenya assumed we hooked up! I look like I sucked more than just face!” I wiped off my makeup, changed out of my dress and took all the pins out of my hair to walk out with my caddy like nothing happened. I get my story straight and walk out of my room. “Good morning! why is everyone running around?”
“Palma-san you’re alive!” Aoyama exclaimed dramatically “quickly! somebody tell the warrior that his princess is safe~”
“Who?”
“Palma-san! Oh thank goodness your ok!” exhaled Momo “we were worried that something happened to you and Iida-kun”
“What makes you say that?”
“I saw you leave with your friends and him in a portal and found it suspicious when he wasn’t in his dorm at curfew” explained Momo “Iida-kun NEVER breaks the rules and we were getting worried.”
“Oh nothing bad happened!” I played it off as best I could “I teleported him to his room when he was getting sleepy at the after party and I teleported back and I guess I passed out until 20 mins ago.” Everyone was looking at me with confusion, I had to get out of there before more questions pop up “WELP! I gotta wash away last night’s sweat away! Excuse me.” I took a quick shower and deep cleaned my hair, just to avoid everyone’s questions of last night. I was starting to feel the soreness and aches of all that dancing, time to just sit back and rest in sweatpants. Or so I thought, as I was changing in my room and Iida struggling with his hangover, somebody was snooping around Iida’s room for answers.
“I made you coffee” Iida said as I floated over to the kitchen “my head is pounding!”
“Thats what happens” as I brought the cup up to my face “I’m surprised you’re not just taking it easy.”
“I don’t want to raise suspicions” he whispered “I really want to lay down and not move.”
I take a nice sip of coffee and savored it. Pure bliss...until I opened my eyes to see Mineta with that look on his face.
“So what really happened last night you two?” instigated Mineta
“I was invited to a 3rd year after party, got tired early, Ita took me to my room and went to sleep.” Iida disarmed the situation.
Mineta showed us my clutch from behind his back “Want to try that again? I found this in your room Iida-kun.”
“THATS WHERE IT WAS!” I said reaching for it “I forgot it in your room when I dropped you off, I was in a rush to go back to the party.”
“Nuh uh!” Mineta said as he didn’t give my clutch back “I don’t think you’re telling the truth, Palma-san” he pulls out a condom from the clutch “looks like Iida-kun can go from 0 to 60 in more than one way.”
Our faces went pale, I know I didn’t do anything with Iida and Iida knows I wouldn’t do such a thing. We looked at each other with the ‘I crave death’ eyes, how are we going to talk our way out of this one?
“I can’t believe you have the nerve to invade my privacy Mineta!” Iida scolded.
“ANSWER THE QUESTION IIDA-KUN!” Mineta raised his voice, getting the attention of everyone “What happened last night that involved you, Palma-san and this!”
I took a deep breath and downed my cup of coffee “OK if you must know, I get condoms from Midnight every now and then because I won’t get in trouble for hooking up, not that I have or want with my options here. It’s true that Tenya was invited to a 3rd year intel after party, all because he was associated with me and my squadron. We were just having a nice time dancing and talking to the 3rd years, he was getting sleepy and I took him to his room. I tucked him in and teleported back to party some more. Came back at around 10am after passing out in my friend’s dorm.”
Everyone was murmuring believing my word because I had no reason to lie if Iida confirmed with his side of the story. Iida wasn’t composing himself too well and I caught on to his discomfort.
“Well if everything is cleared up,” he said masking the fact that he felt dizzy “I’m going to my room to...call my brother.”
I give him the secret assist by subtlety levitating him off the floor while he walked so they don’t lose their balance. I get my clutch back and retreat to my room, hoping this whole thing was resolved. While hitting the books for an upcoming stats and strats quiz, I get a knock at my door.
“Who is it?”
“It’s Kirishima and Bakugo”
Those two? What do they want? “Come in!”
They dash inside and lock my door and barricade it with my hamper and vanity chair. I was very confused by their actions as I still had no clue what they want from me or why they had to lock the door.
“Ok that should be good!” Kirishima said relieved “Ok Palma-san, we need something...uhh a bit, controversial from you.”
“Clearly, what do you need?” I calmly said opening my vanity drawer “I got vodka, rum, beer in glass bottle, coca cola in glass bottle, weak weed, good weed, muscle relaxant, lighters of all types, tampons, hair vitamins-”
“What? no! well..” Kirishima interrupted me with a curious tone “we might need some muscle relaxant and a lighter too-”
“What we came here for was something you use... below the belt” Bakugo growled timidly.
“Oh I see” I said as I opened my night stand drawer “I got jock straps, 3 different types of lube, hemorrhoid cream, horse tranquilizer in suppository, a douche, 2 boxes of condoms, a paddle and blindfolds.”
“I- have so many questions” Kirishima said semi-disgusted but intrigued “but we came here for condoms.”
“Oh cool, you can take a box off my hands” I said tossing them the box “I won’t be needing them anytime soon.”
Bakugo coughed and blushed “urm, could we also...get some of that lube and muscle relaxant?”
“Sure! Would you like a bag?”
“What is this? a gift shop!” exclaimed Bakugo “but yes please, I don’t want balls for brains snooping around my shit.”
I levitate a gift bag I kept from the organic body care place I frequent and placed their items in the bag. They look at me like I was running a sort of low-key sex shop out of my room.
“How much do we owe you?” asked Kirishima as I gave them their bagged items.
“Hmmm, what do you have other than money in exchange?”
“Umm, OH! I have notes from all the lessons you’ve missed in Laws and Ethics plus study hints for the next exam at the end of the term” offered Bakugo “otherwise, we have $4,000 yen combined in cash.”
“I’ll take the notes with study hints and $2,000 yen”
“You got it!” Kirishima perked up and gave me the cash “do you do all your transactions like this?”
“Only if I’m selling my odds and ends or contraband” I explained while counting the cash “like, money is great and all BUT, knowledge and favors are just as good if you want to keep my mouth shut about our little exchange.”
“You wouldn’t!” Kirishima and Bakugo gasped
“I have, why do you think Hagakure and I are on weird terms! She tried to underpay me and didn’t fulfill her favor of preparing my fruit for a week” I recalled to them “I really hope getting exposed for playing with dollies was worth the custom glitter body power.”
“YOU sold her that?!” Kirishima screamed “her glitter silhouette gives me the creeps. I liked her better when I couldn’t see her.”
“Well...when you get out, can you put everything back that you barricaded the door with?”
“Right! Thank you Palma-san, I’ll come by in a bit with the notes and study hints.” complied Bakugo.
“Thank you boys! It’s a pleasure doing business with you.”
They rushed to their rooms, Bakugo came back with the notes and I was at peace once again. I get bored after 3 hours of studying, Jin portaled me some fried rice with shrimp so I didn’t leave my room for dinner. Afterwards, I log onto the video game and see Tokoyami, Mineta and Sero online and we raid together, mainly because they didn’t want to lose. I get in the zone and I get a knock on my door.
“Who is it?”
“It’s Tenya”
“Oh uhhh come in”
He walks in to see me slouched in my inflatable couch in my headset, furiously tapping buttons. All you could hear was the tapping because I play without the over world music.
“Are you winning?”
“hahaha you sounded like a dad” I cackled “I’m playing with Tokoyami, Mineta and Sero...we aren’t doing so hot.” He pulls up my desk chair to watch me play and sort of got lost in all the chaos on screen. We lost badly on a raid that it made all of us rage.  “WHAT THE FUCK MINETA!” we all screamed into the headset.
“I told yall to pack the bronze shield!” I groaned “we could’ve won against those big tiddied blue bitches.”
“Nuh! Their whole team were healers!” cried out Mineta.
“Whatever dude, I’m logging off, I’m being summoned irl” I said before turning off my headset. I logged off and turned to Iida “Sorry for just ignoring you, it got intense.”
“No no! I liked watching, your strategy is good in game.”
“Thanks hehehe” I giggled and realized he didn’t give me a reason for his visit, and I got sus “sooo whats up!”
“Just thought I’d drop in and just spend some time together” he nervously said “I know we spend time yesterday but I want some sober quality time.”
“Oh right hehehe that was a crazy night” I sat up properly and recalled the near kiss we shared at the dance “hey if you’re down, there’s this tree in the shared field I want to explore.”
“A tree? What’s so special about this tree?”
“It’s in the far corner of the field and its a security camera blind spot” I stood up and stretched my back “wanna join me?”
“Sure! I’ll accompany you” he stood up and stuck his arm out “shall we head out, your majesty.”
I giggled “You’re dumb, but yes, lets get going!” I loop my arm into his and walk to the shared field. Nobody was in the commons area nor outside despite it being a nice night out. I lead him to which tree I was talking about and tell him about how I know about the blind spot. Long story short, the 2nd years were being crackheads and tried to agitate the security bots by flashing they asses to get them upset. The only place they didn’t get a reaction from is the tree, the rumor spread and sparked my curiosity but never had the time to go explore, until now. We walk up to the tree and I got giddy.
“Yea, its a tree” he said not really getting why I wanted to go and see this tree.
“No look closer!” I said pointing at the parting of the branches behind the tree “this tree has this nest like perch that can hold 3 people PLUS its open at the top enough to star gaze at night but give enough shade in the day to hide up here to meditate.” I climb up and wiggle my way into the parting, Iida followed after me and saw what I meant.
“Wow, this is so cozy and amazing” he said looking around him and upward “it is open to star gaze.”
“Lay down with me!” I pat the space next to me as I laid down “lets watch the stars together.”
His heart was racing when he laid down next to me and we felt tranquil looking at the sky. Our hands were edging up to each other and it gave me anxiety because I was tempted to hold his hand but stopped myself.
“So umm, Ita” Iida turned to me “I want to...apologize to you about my forwardness during the slow dance.”
“Huh? Why?”
“Because, I got all shaky and sweaty on you” he chopped the air slowly “I don’t know what came over me since we’re friends and I feel like I disappointed you or scared you away. I just- I’m not good at expressing my feelings and I almost ruined everything between us.”
“Tenya, was that going to be your first kiss?”
“yes, and I was a bit scared but I wanted you to have a good time! I know you like dancing and you said that you like to kiss during slow dances.”
“Oh Tenya! Thats sweet of you but don’t force yourself to do something just because somebody else likes it, especially things like kisses, thats intimate” I start to dive into my inner thoughts about intimacy, Iida listened intently “I kiss for the sake of closeness, I like the feeling and sharing of passion. Kissing is just one way to let me into somebody’s intense feelings of passion, if you’re not ready to express your passions to somebody else, those kisses are wasted and fake. So when I say ‘I crave intimacy’ I want to feel somebody to express their passion onto me in the form of caressing, body heat, kisses, breathless moans and eye contact.”
“So what your saying is, I shouldn’t kiss someone unless I’m ready to express my passion” he meditated on those words “then I definitely wasn’t ready to give a kiss last night. You aren’t mad at me?”
“Nah, it was probably a good thing I pulled away” I sat up “I hope that the day you meet that certain someone that stirs up the passion in your heart to properly express it in that first kiss, you feel at ease and all the lovely feelings that accompany it.”
“Is that how you felt?”
“Yea, he was my first love” I sighed at the memory “I was convinced that we were going to be together forever and planned our future despite being so young.”
“That sounds intense, then what happened?”
“Then I came over here” I felt the tears welling up in my eyes “I never got to say goodbye or a final ‘I love you’. Sometimes I feel the guilt of not upholding my promises that I vowed to do, but life is unpredictable and crazy so I don’t really know what to feel since coming here.”
“Ita, I didn’t know you have such complex feelings about love and intimacy” he said in awe then thought of another subject to pick at “then what is your stance on sex?”
“Oh that’s something I haven’t experienced yet but would like to with the right person. All I know is that its the ultimate form of intimacy, you’re literally connected to this person and your giving them pleasure that’s supposed to express their need and desire for this person. You involve the entire body in this expression but you feel the connection in your souls, and that blows my mind! So much that I’m a little scared to try it because, what if it’s with the wrong person? And what if I don’t feel that connection even though I feel like I’m doing it with the right person? So many questions and doubts that I just can’t answer until I meet the right person.”
“I feel like I learned so much about you and what it means to be intimate” said Iida looking at her with amazement “you really outshine everyone else, like a full moon against the stars at night.”
I turn red “Oh jeez save it for your special someone Tenya hehehe.” We laugh and climb down after a while. While we walked back, Iida suddenly remembered my internship.
“Oh I just remembered! when are you leaving for your internship?”
“I leave next month for 2 weeks.”
“I see, for winter break to not take away from other school activities.”
“Yea, what got me messed up is that Christmas is like 3rd valentines day here. In America it’s a big religious holiday that is celebrated well into the New Year.”
“I heard about American Christmas! I’d love to go celebrate someday.”
“No you don’t, too much Jesus talk and political correctness with capitalist overtones.”
“Well if you put it like that then I don’t want to celebrate anything in America.”
“As you should!”
We laughed so hard it brought tears to our eyes. He dropped me off at my dorm and said good night. He starts thinking about all the things I said about intimacy, they concluded that he should take his time to find himself emotionally to properly convey his feelings to her. Theres no doubt that she’s the one but you can’t rush your emotions and force her to feel the same. He drifted to sleep wishing he held her last night when she fell asleep next to him, the fact that she was that close and took care of him made it hard to shake these feelings he couldn’t express. What now?
-Wednesday, in homeroom-
“It’s decision day everyone!” Diya sensei said with some pep in his tone “I’ll be giving out your forms to fill out, for the ones that have medical papers, we got them attached already so no need to pester the nurse or your doctor for records.” Jin raises his hand “Yes Matsui?”
“When do we need to turn them in?”
“By tomorrow to me, if you complete it before, just turn it in to me at anytime.”
I fill out mine in my free period and turn it in before stats and strats, my excitement made me want to turn it in as soon as possible. I walk to the dorms after school and notice a black town car with tinted windows in the parking lot, oh jeez I think, I hope they weren’t waiting too long! I run to my dorms and see 2 American agents accompanying my case worker siting at the dining table, drinking tea with Aizawa and Diya sensei.
“Um hello! What a strange surprise!” I said bowing “I hope I didn’t keep you waiting.”
“Not at all Miss Palma” said my case worker as she pulled up a file “we just need to give you a bit of a situation update.”
“Oh! then, may I request sound-proof privacy?”
“That can be arranged, 99? would you deploy the dome?”
“They’re called bubble huts and yes, deploying now.” A soap bubble like structure appeared from thin air when he clapped his hands. With a wave of his hand, it enclosed us in a sound proof dome.
“Anyways, Miss Palma” my case worker started “Firstly, an update from America on the activity. Your family is still safe in that small town in north cali, but back in southern cali the gang is getting restless.” she gave me a stack of 5 pictures “Vigilantes are popping up to stop them but its been hopeless, they’ve gotten stronger and bigger. Odd detail to raise concern, they’ve been mentioning you in their tagging and manifestos, like they know you’re alive.”
I turn pale because I know why “I was afraid of that” I said looking at a photo of a crime scene outside a high school where my best friend lived by “the insider knowledge I know is that boy I was dating, he has a quirk that has to do with the whole ‘red strings’ love myths but the connection is severed when one of the people dies. Since I saw for myself that I was his other end of the red string, he knows or believes I’m still alive. Worst part, his cousin is part of the gang and offered me and him protection and safety if/when an attack happened. Obviously I got in the way and didn’t get spared. It could be possible that he’s relaying this occurrence to his family, eventually getting to their cousin.”
Aizawa choked on his tea “Oh kiddo how did you involved yourself in that one?!”
“The boy and I were in band in middle school, very talented and sat next to each other every year until the incident.”
“If that were to be true” pondered the case worker “your family would still be safe but I’m factoring in a freak incident where they somehow come here and hunt you down.”
“Why? What do they want from her?” asked Diya.
“She knows the leader of that gang at a near personal level” sighed the case worker “nobody knows who is the leader or his family, and for the ones that are getting too close or start to figure him out, gets killed. Miss Palma figured him out on the day of the incident, he spared her at first but she fought him until she couldn’t anymore. If this boy is telling everyone that knew her that she might be alive, her life is at risk again.”
“So what steps are going to be taken place to insure safety?”
“There’s not much else other than, don’t wander off by yourself too far than you can’t teleport to safety/hiding” my case worker responded “But on some more exciting news! I see that you chose Best Jeanist to intern under, good choice Miss Palma.”
“Oh thank you!”
“Agent 99 gave me your packet to review and I will hand deliver it to his agency with other legal papers I have to explain in person” the mood lifted as she spoke “do you have any requests or accommodations to add?”
“Hmm, I don’t, thank you for handling my paperwork.”
“No problem! That concludes this meeting, drop the dome and unfreeze the students.”
“Unfreeze the students?” I mumbled to myself as Diya clapped to pop the bubble. I stand up and peek over where the American agents headed and saw most of hero 1-A frozen in time with different expressions of fear and confusion. “thats wicked cool! May I watch you unfreeze them?”
“Um sure kid” said the buzzcut agent “just stand back a bit.”
I comply and watch the two agents work together to unfreeze and mind wipe them. The students were confused why they were there in the first place and the agents with the case worker made their escape. Diya headed out soon after and Aizawa retreated to his quarters. I proceeded with my normal routine, trying to shake off the update report, there was no way I was at risk again! It would be impossible to trot the globe just to find me...right?

What I Wish Someone Told Me Before Junior Year
It is currently the summer between my junior and senior year, and I cannot wait to enter my last year of high school! It’s a bit surreal to say the least, but I definitely think junior year was my best year thus far. If you asked me to describe each school year in high school (minus senior year), I’d say that freshman year was the easiest, sophomore year was the most challenging, and junior year was the most productive.
Everybody says junior year is one of the most important years of your high school career, and I agree to a certain extent. My junior year was abundant with highs and lows, stressful nights and early mornings, and dreaded days and exciting events. There were times when I was successful, yet there were others when I felt like a failure.
If you’re about to enter your junior year or if you’d simply like to know my advice on what helped me as a junior, here are five tips on what I wish someone would have told me before my junior year:
1. Start everything early.
If you’re like me, you probably like to procrastinate a lot. In junior year (and in any year of your life), that won’t do you any good.
My teachers recommended students to take their first SAT and ACT exams during their junior year, which makes sense. If you don’t like your score from junior year, you can retake it as a senior in hopes of earning a better score.
So I set out to take my SAT in June (more specifically, June 3) and my ACT the following week (June 10). The reason why I chose the June dates and not May or earlier is because I wanted to “accumulate” as much knowledge as possible before I took each exam.
I have yet to receive my scores, but if there’s one thing I regret, it was that I feel as though I didn’t practice enough.
During my leisure, I watched a TED Talk on what top students do differently than average ones, and one of the key things that top students do is take practice exams well before the test, whereas average students tend to reread the material over and over and over again until their brains are exhausted. Unfortunately, that won’t help you on the SAT/ACT.
What I did to practice for the SAT was to create a Khan Academy account and make a study schedule that I would religiously follow each week in preparation for the June exam. Of course, this is extremely beneficial – if you’re consistent with it.
I, however, was not. I said “hi!” to Khan Academy for about one week straight and then completely abandoned my account. I don’t even recall exactly how many months I skipped SAT Practice because there were so many. Needless to say, DO NOT DO THAT.
The month leading up to June 3, I began to practice every single day. I would log into Khan Academy during zero period, lunch breaks, and before I started my homework. It was a super productive routine, which I am proud to have accomplished, but it undoubtedly required plenty of discipline and determination.
Would I probably have scored higher if I practiced way more? Yes. Would I feel more confident about my score if I studied earlier? Absolutely.
Now that we’re on the topic of studying...
2. Find a study schedule that works for you.
I cannot stress this one enough. If you’re still in that mindset of “I can study the night before the test and still score an A+ on it,” this is especially for you, my friend.
I used to be the type of person who lived and breathed that mindset. I would put off studying until the night before (sometimes the morning of) a test, self-assured that I would get an A. And most of the time, I did. But it did result in me losing precious hours of sleep and crying from constant bouts of stress.
To avoid this, I highly recommend creating a study schedule that works for you (key words: “works for you”). You don’t have to strive to be the next Albert Einstein and study chemistry formulas for five hours every night, because if you’re involved in ten extracurriculars, enrolled in five AP classes, and given a list of twenty chores to do on the daily, you’d obviously have to create a study schedule that caters to your specific needs.
What I did was that I would study my most difficult subjects (i.e. Precalculus, Chemistry, and AP United States History) for about thirty minutes each night, and I would give or take a few minutes depending on how difficult the lesson was or when my next exam would take place. Thirty minutes may not seem like a lot, but it’s way more efficient than studying four hours the night before the test. Plus, I had leadership positions, extracurriculars, and other AP/Honors homework under my belt, so I couldn’t afford to study for hours on end.
Depending on your daily/weekly schedule, I suggest finding what works perfectly for you. This does require some trial and error, but trust me, your hard work will pay off!
3. Get more sleep.
This is a piece of advice I desperately needed. When you’re feeling lethargic at school, you cannot – and will not – show your best work. The only (obvious) way to fix this is by catching more shuteye.
This may require some experimentation. If you’re anything like me and beg for a drop of coffee when you’re running off five hours of sleep, shoot for six to seven hours of sleep (at the very least) each night. Many doctors and professionals suggest eight hours of sleep for optimal energy, but your body may be different. Whether you’re a night owl or a morning bird, I recommend testing out different hours of sleep and seeing what works for you.
Once you’ve determined your ideal sleep schedule, you’ve got to stick to it. I have zero period, which means I wake up every morning at 6 a.m., regardless of whether I want to or not. It’s become a habit for me, but of course, it changes drastically over the summer.
For many students, sticking to a consistent sleep schedule may mean finishing your homework earlier than usual, or sacrificing a few extracurriculars in order to make more time for sleep. That’s okay. If you’re losing hours of sleep due to your activities, re-evaluate each one. Ask yourself, “Is this worth my time?” If it isn’t, you may have to consider knocking it off your schedule.
This brings me to my next point, which is...
3. Don’t be afraid to quit and try out different things.
As children, we were taught that quitting a sport, club, etc. is no bueno. We’re shamed for straying away from our commitments, and even in some cases in high school, it’s heavily frowned upon to do so. But as you grow older, it may be of more benefit to quit extraneous activities than to stay in them.
During my sophomore year, I was on the track team. I absolutely loved sprinting and lifting weights – it was my form of stress-relief (plus, it made me more confident in how my body looked, which was an added bonus). But when I was on the team my junior year, I hated it. I don’t know if it was because of the negative people I was surrounding myself with, or because the workouts just weren’t fun anymore, or if it was a combination of the two. The point is, I quit the track team.
And it was difficult. I was fearful of what my coaches would tell me. I was scared of what my friends on the team would think of me. And most importantly, I was afraid of being shamed for my decision.
Luckily, my coaches and most of my friends were incredibly supportive and understood my situation. But to this day, it was one of the hardest choices I’d ever made in my high school career.
Like the track team, I also quit the All Female Dance Team, Book Club, Science Club, Bible Club, and several others. I chose to leave my AP Chemistry class and opted for an easier chemistry course, simply because I wanted to decrease my workload. Different activities were definitely more challenging to say goodbye to, but in the end, I don’t regret any of my decisions. I feel healthier and more balanced with the activities in which I am currently involved (and I get much more sleep!).
4. Heartbreaks are inevitable, but they’re leading you to your next successful relationship.
Like I mentioned in my previous blog post, I went through an excruciatingly painful breakup early on in my junior year. Needless to say, I was extremely depressed because of it. I’ll spare you the details of what happened (simply because that’s a really personal topic), but without a doubt, I’ve learned so much from my pain. I became more assertive and independent, discovered exactly what I want and don’t want in a guy, and uncovered a newfound strength inside of me that I never knew I possessed.
In conjunction, I don’t recommend rushing into a relationship immediately after you’ve endured a breakup. I gave myself a few months of healing before I started dating my current boyfriend. This healing process may take longer for others and shorter for some, so it’s important to surround yourself with your loved ones and to do activities that make you happy to distract yourself from the pain.
5. Don’t rush it.
This is a short and simple piece of advice my APUSH teacher gave us on the last day of class, yet it’s super meaningful.
There will be many days when you’ll want to get out of high school already. There will also be days when you’ll hate your teachers, your parents, your classmates, and so on. There will be plenty of days when you’ll want to be an adult and have your life figured out already.
But don’t rush it. Enjoy your youth while you still have it, because there are only so many years before you’ll have to pay taxes, work for ten hours each day, and take care of crying babies until 3 a.m. This time of your life is valuable, so treasure it.
I hope this helps you, future juniors, in the upcoming school year! I wish you all the best of luck!
Love, Roselyn

Alright, now to the main city and the main point of the trip – for work in Paris. I find that the marginal utility theory works here too: as I make more trips there, the enjoyment I get from it diminishes. By this trip, it was almost painfully just a work trip. I would say it was my own choice though: I kept it to as short as I possibly could (because my threshold for negativities is decreasing, and I do not see why I should put up with any more than two weeks of it). Previously, it was always a whole month, so I could just enjoy strolling down the streets at the end of the work day, and then strolling to the markets or to some artist house over the weekend. This time, every evening was an urban hike past the crowd along the dusty roads, almost 2km. It was the same in the morning, but it was not as dusty in the morning.
The two weeks were split into many different parts. Basically we reached France on a Whit Saturday/Sunday/Monday weekend and it was pointless going to work. Hence the trip to Rennes, Bretagne – easy convenient destination with enough sights and enough tranquility. Then it was back to office, and my mini-me joined Part 1 of Paris! Then it was off to Berlin for a meeting (and sightseeing along the way, literally), and then back to Paris for Part 2. By the weekend, we had a friend join from Catalunya, and spent the weekend at a colleague’s place in suburban Paris before heading back to Singapore.
Yes, limit the time in Paris. It is expensive and it is dusty. Okay, better start writing about happier things before I turn into an old broken record.
So! My Mini Me joined me in Paris! She interned for us for abit before venturing to London to study. She finished her exams and air tickets were cheap (I was shocked when she told me the price …) so she flew over and bunked in with me. She is my niece (gasp!) and family has always likened her to me, and her elder sis to my elder sis, and her younger bro to my younger bro. It is pretty endearing. Her dad once told me, “hey, I was just looking at your photos”, and I was pretty puzzled until he showed me the pics of her and their family. “Doesn’t she look exactly like you?” 😀 😀 I am flattered. 😀 😀 She is really cute and loveable. Everyone is office loves her because she is so nice and sweet.
Our two best dinners were with her. We splurged on these two dinners because she is such good company, and we wanted to give this young lady a good experience in this city for the first time. We had a good laugh too, because I am totally unabashed about my poor French pronunciation, and I am terrible at pretence. This restaurant was really good, with great service staff. The first night we went, they were having a private event, so the guy said, “hope to see you tomorrow night”. So of course, we went back there “tomorrow night” and they remembered! There was this snotty waiter (my feeling is he was trying to pretend to be snotty.. haha) serving our table, and his actions were really theatrical and two of us were already trying so hard to contain our giggles. THEN, when it came to dessert, I read out my order in phonetic English, and gosh, you should see his face! He was trying so hard to keep a straight face, but you can see a smirk almost breaking out through it. We broke into our giggles after he left with our orders. When dessert was served, it was someone else – the guy who spoke to us the night before. And he calmly read out the names of our desserts in impeccable French. HAHAHAHA. It was hilarious.
So in the day time while we were slogging in office, she headed off to visit all the touristy spots. Youths really have bountiful energy. She walked both days and said she was not tired at all. I was like that the first trip to Paris, but had to end my day by 4pm. Now I can understand how I really have to slow down when backpacking with dad. (My sis has realised this during their recent Bandung trip, and is going to fix just one focal point a day followed by lots of chilling for the upcoming Taipei trip.)
The rest of Paris is just about work. Everyday, we walk far far far away to office, and I would have my nose up in the air – to avoid the dust and to admire the sculptures on the roofs and the roofscapes of the Parisian urbanism. Everyday, we pass by the French Press, which means we have finally reached our office just around the corner. I would imagine what goes on in there – lines and lines of production, with a row of robots continuously pumping the French Press at a certain frequency. 😀 😀 Maybe that is not too far from the truth, I am sure journalists need tonnes of coffee to keep them writing. 😀 Client meetings were fun too – either the meeting venue is cool to the max, or the eating venue is classy to the max. ❤
Such a change of tone from my last two trips, when I used to blog much lovelier things. 😮 I hardly got to eat much salad this time (previous trip was salad every lunch and I was so filled with joy and bliss). I have to end this post with some food pics to make me feel better about life. Shakshuka is what I had for breakfast everyday! The waiters remember my order (specifically no eggs), and I found out why only when I got back. This dish is the middle eastern version of tomato and eggs. It is really yummy even without eggs! First day, I had it with croissant; second day, I had it with pain au chocolate; third day, they served it with a steamy pita in a pretty cloth bag! The photo on the right was one of the rare meals when food is not served with potatoes! I had potato overdose – mashed, boiled, whole, sliced, fried, fries – all sorts with all meals. I skipped many dinners because my stomach was filled with potatoes that hold space all the way till it was time for Shakshuka.
Paris Alright, now to the main city and the main point of the trip - for work in Paris.
