Time After Time: [hero version]
This is one of two new versions of the snippet formerly known as #4. The original contained head-hopping and I wasn't satisfied with the narration distance either, so I wrote an improved version of this scene from both characters' pov respectively. For the villain's pov, check out the [villain version].
Synopsis: they are not friends anymore, and yet, when the hero is mourning their father’s death, the villain can’t bear to stand idly by.
“Who died?”
The hero flinched, ripped out of the thoughts swirling around their foggy mind. The familiar voice tore at their insides like they’d swallowed a handful of broken glass, churning in their gut like needles and fire, as they whirled around a tad too fast and almost lost their balance.
Why did it have to be the villain? Why here of all places? And why did it have to be today? Wasn’t that just cruel? – As if they hadn’t suffered enough.
They swallowed the lump in their throat and clenched their fists in preparation for a fight they couldn’t see themself winning. Not today. Not here. Not when they hadn’t slept, hadn’t eaten, hadn’t even noticed the villain approach. And perhaps the most damning of it all: despite everything, they hadn’t even considered the possibility the villain might seize the opportunity.
Oh, but if this day was to end in blood, they wouldn’t be the only one to bleed.
The villain, however, raised their hands in a placating gesture and nothing in their stance spoke of threats and hostility. “Easy! I didn’t come to pick a fight with you,” the villain said, and looked like they meant it. “Not on a graveyard. I can see absolutely no merit in disrespecting the dead. Seems distasteful, no?”
Still wary, but somewhat pacified, the hero allowed their shoulders to relax. “Ah, right,” they mumbled and lowered their eyes.
Was it wrong to feel relieved?
Yes, it was.
It was wrong, cataclysmically, when their relief revolved less around avoiding a physical confrontation and more around not having misjudged the villain’s integrity. Because the mere idea the villain might stoop this low had felt too crushing an act of treason when there shouldn’t have been any trust left between them to betray.
“Who died?” the villain repeated, hauntingly tender, in the voice of a friend the hero still occasionally met in their dreams even after all those years.
Their gaze shifted to the fresh grave a few metres behind them, covered with a number of decorative floral arrangements left by the people who’d attended the funeral earlier.
Was it bizarre or fitting to gift beauty so fleeting as that of flowers in the face of a horror as irrevocable and eternal as death? They couldn’t imagine dead people would care for flowers. Their father had certainly never cared for flowers in his lifetime, and even death wouldn’t change a man that set in his ways.
They’d always joked he’d survive them – too stubborn to die. They’d been wrong.
“My dad,” the hero murmured. “He had a heart attack last week.” They almost choked on the words and had to fight back new tears.
It was a losing battle.
How a few more tears now could feel that shameful a defeat, they couldn’t fathom. It seemed odd, considering the many other times the villain had seen them during their most vulnerable moments. On countless occasions, their former friend had comforted them when they’d been bawling their eyes out over some idiotic little things that now seemed so trivial.
There probably wasn’t a single person they had cried in front of more often.
Somehow that made it so much worse.
“I’m sorry to hear it,” the villain said politely, a sad little frown on their face, “you have my condolences.”
Well, if that didn’t sound petty and hollow…. Just a few more empty phrases to be added to all those they’d already heard today.
They snorted mirthlessly and grasped for that tiny spark of anger underneath all the hurt. Because anything would be better than even more tears. “You are kidding, right? We both know you never liked my father.”
The villain grimaced. “True, I can’t say I did. But, in my defence, he wasn’t exactly a fan of mine either.”
“Oh, that’s quite an understatement, don’t you think?” Calling it an understatement was in itself an understatement. “My dad absolutely hated you.”
Quite unexpectedly, their childhood friend chuckled. The familiar sound made their heart lurch and it took them a breathless moment to reign in their emotions and clear their head.
This person in front of them wasn’t their friend.
Not anymore.
And yet the villain still possessed that mellow smile and those cute dimples they used to find so adorable.
“Yeah, he did despise me, didn’t he?” The villain rolled their eyes dramatically and that wry smirk spreading on their face was another heavy dose of nostalgia. “Remember that one time, when we tried to ‘borrow’ one of his chickens?”
As if they would ever be able to forget that…
Bringing it up now really wasn’t fair.
A sentimental smile appeared on their face. “We stole the key to the hen cope. Everything went perfectly according to plan, and then Dad spotted us from the balcony. Just as we were about to abscond with the bird.” They shook their head and huffed, not quite a laugh but dangerously close. “God, Dad was totally furious.”
The villain snorted. “Yeah, at me! First, he only yelled, telling me how I was such a bad influence on you” – their childhood friend shot them a mock exasperated look, a bit overdone with that hand-on-heart gesture – “and then he tried to murder me!”
“No, he didn’t! He merely—” They bit down hard on their lip, trying to stifle the laugh threatening to spill. This wasn’t funny, or at least it shouldn’t be. They shouldn’t even have a conversation like this, let alone enjoy the villain’s weird antics.
“You’re grossly exaggerating!” they protested, and it wasn’t so much a question of honest opinion as the pressing and perhaps silly urge to banter with the villain. “He only threw a couple shoes at you.”
“One of his damn boots hit the back of my head! You have no idea how much that hurt!” the villain complained indignantly, crossing their arms in front of their chest. “Plus, stealing the stupid chicken wasn’t even my idea. That was all on you!”
Now, that point they couldn’t argue. It had indeed been their idea. Just like pretty much all of the other terrible ideas that had ever landed the two of them in trouble.
Okay, they had to admit this was funny. A little bit.
And was it so wrong to not feel like crying for a few minutes? Was it so wrong to enjoy themself? Even if it was with the villain. Even if this was nothing more than pity. Wasn’t it okay to be selfish, just this once?
They did allow themself to laugh then, and it warmed their chest like a sip of their favourite tea while they let it slowly turn into a chuckle, then a hum. “That day, we were in such a hurry to get away, we forgot to close the door to the hen cope. Do you remember that? Those damn birds were suddenly all over the yard. It was quite a mess.”
“Yeah, of course I do!” The villain smiled. “Wasn’t it such a pain to catch them afterwards?”
Not nearly as much of a pain as getting their friend to stop whining about their headache…
“It was kind of fun actually, don’t you think?” Grinning, they turned, just in time to see something raw and desperate flit across the villain’s face.
“I miss you!” the villain blurted and instantly went pale.
They watched a myriad of emotions wash across their former friend’s panicked face.
For what it was worth, considering the audacity of turning up and pretending everything was fine between them, emotional manipulation had never been the villain’s modus operandi. Their former friend clearly hadn’t meant to go this far; they looked more shook than the hero felt.
Which meant it was true.
The villain averted their gaze and took a tentative step back. “Please, forget I said that.”
As if that was an option. As if it didn’t already rip them to pieces. As if they could pretend today hadn’t existed when next they met; as if they could both just go back to fists and insults right after establishing they hadn’t in fact irreparably moved on yet from kisses and cuddles.
They stared in disbelieve as their perhaps-not-quite former friend mumbled an apology and made to flee.
And yeah, there was absolutely no way they were letting this go! As if they’d allow the villain to casually drop by, make them laugh, and remind them of why and just how much they’d adored their best friend – only for the villain to run off afterwards like the easily-spooked little scaredy-cat they apparently still were, if deep down.
“Wait!”
They gripped the villain by the shoulder and pulled them back, wrapped their arms around the villain’s torso, and buried their face in the crook of the villain’s neck – and met next to no resistance.
“Hero, I should go.” Gentle fingers pushed meekly against their arms.
“Villain, please.” Their voice was barely more than a whisper; they shifted just enough to make eye contact. “I miss you too.”
Don’t you dare leave me again!
Warm breath fanned against their cheek. A small smile curved their lips when the villain went still again in their arms. They tightened the embrace and could feel a heart beating, quick and excited, against their chest; whose they weren’t sure.
“You’re not thinking straight,” their friend implored, caring and kind. Ever so considerate of the hero’s feeling. “You’ll regret this.”
Maybe they would, but that didn’t matter. Because the villain was still the same – still theirs.
Soft-hearted and tender.
So easy to take advantage of.
“I don’t care,” they promised and stole what would be the first of many kisses.

A Middle Age
The very first feeling, if one could remember their own birth, would be the sliding of wet flesh over their brand new skin to the tune of their mother's screaming. An upsetting thought, prevented by the squishiness of the mortal newborn's brain. Cataclysm is a newborn like anyone once was, but he is born a man. His total non-existence followed immediately by fully formed musculature and mastery of language, coming to being like ice forming in cold water. In free air, he falls hands and knees to the concrete floor. His first feeling is the fear that his kneecaps will break, and his first words are: "Where am I?"
Cataclysm's senses are brought to life. There's an odd beeping pervading the air, a ferrous scent like blood and a taste to match, and a dim but irritating light barely illuminating what his thoughts tessellated for him to be a laboratory.
A hand touched his back, and gently caressed his cold, wet skin. Cataclysm was vexed, but not panicked.
"You are made of something beautiful and new." said the voice attached to the hand. "You are my happiest triumph."
The hand touched a cord attached to Cataclysm's back and tugged it off of him. It fell to the ground with a metallic clank. His lungs cleared, and he heaved as something spilled from his mouth onto the floor. The hands pat his head and helped Cataclysm stand, his new legs not ever having done so.
Upright, he found that he was much taller than the person who helped him, a distinguished, intelligent-looking man, somewhere in his 40s. No hair. A horizontal scar on his forehead. Electric blue eyes.
"Can you understand my words?" he asked.
"Yes." replied Cataclysm.
"Good. My name is Doctor Ryle. I'm not an accredited doctor, I should say. My first name is Doctor."
"Hm."
"How do you feel?" asked Doctor.
"Thirsty and cold, and...primed to know things."
"Impressive faculty. Immediate sense of want and need...what is your name?"
"Cataclysm." he said plainly, only vaguely aware of what that word means aside from being his name.
"Troubling! We'll get to that later."
---
Doctor gave Cataclysm a bathrobe and a pair of sandals, like he'd just come from a spa. He was led through winding stone hallways, the floor pocked with sharp pebbles. They came to a room, which Cataclysm recognized as a "Break Room". There was a woman of navy blue skin sat down, eyes closed, wires from the wall plugged into her.
"Tempest?" Doctor called. He leaned toward Cataclysm- "a previous project of mine. A friend, more importantly."
Tempest opened her eyes and gave Doctor an irritated look, but it softened when she beheld Cataclysm. She popped the wires out from herself and stood up to stretch. Tempest had curly shoulder-length hair of black and silver, silver that matched her foggy eyes. She wore cargo pants and leather boots, but was bare-chested. Cataclysm looked away nervously. Tempest chuckled.
"From when did you load his sense of Forms?" she asked.
"Long ago." replied Doctor.
"Relax, new man. We live in an enlightened age."
"Very well." said Cataclysm, clearing his throat. He continued, "Are you blind?", regarding her eyes.
"Not really. I can see shadow, but very little color. You're pink." Tempest noted. Cataclysm looked at his hands. Certainly redder than Doctor, whose skin was a light gray. Tempest looked at Doctor again.
"So the project is still on?"
"Yes. Which is why I regretfully interrupted your Fyyd Time - I was wondering if you would take our new friend outside."
Cataclysm's eyes lit up at the idea of going outside. He desired fresh air.
"So soon?" Tempest asked.
"Might as well rip the band-aid off." Doctor reasoned.
"Is there something wrong with outside?" Cataclysm asked. Tempest and Doctor laughed together.
---
Cataclysm and Tempest wore heavy protective suits that looked from the outside like they were made of tinfoil, the hood enclosing a powerful gas mask.
"The air is toxic?" asked Cataclysm.
"Yes and no." said Tempest.
She slammed a red button, the door to the compound closed, and the door outside opened.
Lush green grass, wildflowers, butterflies and chirping birds, leaves swaying in the breeze. The pair stepped outside.
"It's beautiful out." Cataclysm said. "Where are we, geographically?"
"A tiny island a quarter-mile off the coast of Crete."
"Why are we wearing these protective suits?"
"My eyes are closed right now. If I open them, the world will change." Tempest explained.
"Go on." Cataclysm encouraged. Tempest nodded, and opened her eyes. Within the cone of her sight, the world was dark and bioluminescent, more like a jungle than a Mediterranean isle. Outside her sight, the world remained as Cataclysm saw it.
"Expectations are layered. I opened my eyes second, so my sight was laid on top of yours. That's why you can see my world." Tempest said.
"What does the world look like when nobody can see it?" Cataclysm asked.
"Dead. Completely. Gray dust and stagnant air. We can see it through security cameras."
"This still doesn't explain the suits."
From nowhere, the landscape changed again, the world turning to glowing sludge and enormous buzzing wasps.
"Ahh!" yelped Cataclysm, startled. "Whose vision is this?"
"Someone on the beach is looking at the island."
Again, a change. Everything became a sunny desertscape, a tall cactus' silhouette overbearing Cataclysm's view.
"Close your eyes for five seconds and reopen them. That will assert your view over the others."
1...2...3...4...5
Cataclysm sighed in relief as his peaceful world returned. He turned to Tempest.
"What happens if two people open their eyes at the same time?"
"The dead world asserts itself."
Cataclysm grunted in confusion and frustration.
"Is this the way the world is supposed to be?" Cataclysm asked.
"No. Long story short, in trying to regenerate the land, this was created by accident."
"What happened to the land in the first place?"
"Too much was taken from it."
Cataclysm took a deep breath, trying to wrap his head around it.
"Why did we come out here?"
"To meet the reason we live on this island. You're going to talk to the Root."

The above piece was a redraw of this old piece for my Fragmented AU. This new piece is a collaboration with @koo1creations. I did the sketch, she did the line art, I did the coloring, she added the cataclysm effects, I did the rest of the effects. We both really enjoyed making this. I am very grateful to her for helping me make this so I can finally post the second part of the Fragmented AU. If you are curious you can find the second part here: Fragmented AU 1. Where it all began. Yes, it took me one whole year to finally get to this. I was really trying to figure out how I wanted to write this and my antagonist and then life got busy... Anyway, I finally got around to it. Again, I preface by saying this story isn’t meant to have any salt. It is only for pure fun. I wanted a mystery in Miraculous and since the show refuses to give me one, I made one myself. I do try to keep it as canonically accurate as possible but the story does take place between season 3 and 4. Anyway, if you want to know what the drawing is about please enjoy the following. I decided to try something a bit new. I do hope I succeeded.
Adrien Agreste doesn’t remember September 7th. If you had asked him what happened that day he couldn’t tell you. But that doesn’t bother him.
It should, though.
It should because that was the day Ladybug and Chat Noir fought over how he barely showed up for fights anymore. That was the day Chat Noir promised her he wouldn’t miss another fight, another patrol, another moment where she needed him again.
He doesn’t remember that. But Chat Noir does.
Why?
If he had the ability, he would remember that the day started out like any other. He was juggling going to school, piano practice, private lessons, fencing, and modeling all at once. It was at night where it all went wrong. In his scramble to get things done he missed yet another important akuma battle. Ladybug had to bring in another 5 heroes and even then, still barely managed without him. They all needed training. Training she didn’t have time for. It was too much for her to handle. Between that and her responsibilities as the new guardian, she lost her cool.
When he showed up late, again, she ripped into him. Of course, she didn’t truly mean every single word she said and immediately apologized afterwards. But the damage was done. He knew he hurt her and he knew he had to fix it. So he promised he will always be there when she needs him. She appreciates the sentiment but knows he can’t keep that promise. He would prove her wrong.
When he heads home that night his chest is burning with anger. He is mad at himself for failing Ladybug. He knows he could do better.
He is so stuck in his own head that he fails to notice the small black cat following him.
Had he noticed, he may have been able to observe how it moved. It was like a glitch. Like some sort of extra in a video game missing a few frames in its walk cycle. It sucks in the light around it as it travels forward, the area around it almost appears blurry.
It's careful in its illogical movements. It stalks behind him, maintaining a safe distance. Its tail is wiggling and its eyes are fixated on Chat.
It’s hunting.
When it meows, Chat jumps in surprise and then turns to it. It is sitting still. Those visual glitches are no longer a problem with it frozen in place so Chat doesn’t notice a thing. He carefully approaches. Its pupils grow wider as a result. It’s clearly excited. “Hey there little guy...” Chat says, crouching down in front of it, only an arm’s length away. “What are you up to?” It doesn’t move. “I bet you’re doing great compared to me.” Chat falls to the ground, sitting crossed-legged. He sets his elbow on his knee and rests his head in his hand. “I can’t seem to do anything right.” He sighs. “Or nothing I want to do right.” He reaches his hand out to pet the cat’s head. When Chat looks away it leans into the pet. Chat is no longer paying attention to it, absentmindedly petting it as he rambles on about the earlier day events. “I just want to make it up to her! I wish I could be both Chat Noir and Adrien.” Another sigh escapes him. “You’re so lucky all you have to do is hunt mi-” He’s cut off by a sharp pain shooting up his arm. He lets out an agonizing cry. It feels like venom is shooting through his veins. His reaction time is quick and he rips his arm away from the cat. Or, at least, he thought he did. It takes him a little longer to realize the cat’s jaw is still clamped onto his hand, somehow holding him in place, and its grip is getting tighter. He watches in horror as spines protrude from its tail, flesh falling off to give way to them. It is accompanied by the loud cracking and twisting of its spine. It’s a sound that makes Chat want to gag. His eyes grow wide as he quickly stands up trying to shake it off. It somehow pulls its whole body forward with pure muscle power and digs its claws into his arm, its tail wrapping up and around the rest of his arm, the spines digging through his suit and into his skin.  How? How is it doing that? That shouldn’t even be possible! His suit is made of magic! Unless... It’s made of magic too. He notices that somehow, even with its jaw firmly locked onto his hand, its lips begin to melt away, making it appear like it’s smiling as wide as the Cheshire cat. There’s a loud crack. A bright green, electric like energy manages to escape through the gaps in its teeth and skin. That’s when it occurs to Chat that this is his right hand and the pain shocks him back to reality. “My miraculous!” He screams, slamming the creature into a wall. He continues this several times but its grip only gets tighter. Its teeth sink into his skin, making it feel like it’s hitting bone, as it sets his nerves on fire. He’s only making it angry.  Chat narrows his eyes knowing what he has to do. “Cataclysm.” He growls. The creature suddenly yelps in pain and immediately jumps off Chat, splitting into several smaller versions of itself, each shifting and morphing into incomprehensible shapes. It seems it can no longer hold its more “innocent” appearance.   Chat is quick to take his opening and uses his baton to bat each piece of thing into a wall. It doesn’t put up much of a fight. It seems his cataclysm really frightened it. It quickly sunk into the wall, much to Chat Noir’s shock, forming an exact shadow of him and quickly running off. He begins to chase but only stops when he feels his right hand begin to numb. He looks down to examine it and finds a fracture in his ring with crackling magical energy quickly seeping out. He looks back up to find the creature has disappeared in all the other shadows, masterfully blending in. With his predator out of his sight he grabs his rapidly numbing arm. He then notices that despite just using cataclysm, there is no countdown timer.  He needs to get home. No time is wasted. He makes it to his home and through his bedroom window in what he could have sworn was under five minutes. His hand is shaking now, he can’t seem to control its spasms. His heart is racing a million miles a minute. “Plagg, claws in!” He immediately whispers, afraid of shouting for fear of waking someone. Even in a crisis like this he still can’t get his priorities straight. Almost instantly the rapidly escaping energy is sucked back into the ring as Plagg appears beside Adrien’s head. Slowly the feeling begins to return to his hand but he still can’t seem to stop the shaking. He turns to Plagg and notices how Plagg twitches, similar to Adrien’s hand, as if he can’t control his body either. “Are you okay?” The little cat asks, seemingly unbothered by his own jittering. “Am I okay?” He cries. “Are you?” Plagg looks down at his own paws and notices the way they tremble. His eyes grow wide in horror. “What-What happened?” “I don’t know!” He says in exasperation. He was hoping Plagg would have the answers. He runs his fingers through his hair, trying to ignore the shaking of his hand. This motion gives Plagg a perfect view of the ominous glowing coming from the bottom of his ring. He quickly grabs Adrien’s hand and flips it over to look at his palm. There’s a small fracture  in the band of the ring. “No! No!” “What’s wrong?” “The reason I can’t hold my form is because my magic is seeping into you!” Plagg says. “You aren’t meant to hold this kind of magic without some sort of conduit! If this keeps going this could cause a huge disaster! I’m talking extinction of the dinosaurs' levels of bad!” “What?” “We have to tell Ladybug! I think the grimoire has a page on how to fix this!” “No!” Adrien yells after Plagg before he can escape through a window. “Adrien. This is really, really, really bad. This can’t wait.” “Please. I-,” Adrien is struggling to find the words. He’s ashamed to admit that he just doesn’t want to bother Ladybug again after he let her down earlier. He fears her look of disappointment. “Can’t we just-” He takes a moment to breathe. “Can’t we just figure out what happened first and get our story straight before we bother Ladybug about this?” Plagg’s eyes drift to Adrien’s hand, the convulsions becoming more and more violent as time goes on. Then he looks into Adrien’s shaky eyes. “Adrien…” Plagg bites his lip. “Fine. But let’s make this quick! What do you remember?” “Okay. Cool. So, um…” He hums in thought, trying to go over the events in his mind. “I was heading home and then I stopped for a moment in that alley way. I was trying to figure out how to make it up to Ladybug-” “Not important. Skip to the point where the miraculous broke.” “Right! Sorry.” Adrien pauses for a moment, trying to think it through once more. So much of it didn’t make sense. “I was petting this cat. It looked like a normal cat. But then it bit me. And this cat, this thing, had the jaw strength of a crocodile!” Plagg nods in understanding, showing he’s following along. “It grew spines out of its tail,” He makes a disgusted face as he recalls that memory, “and then wrapped it around my arm and it somehow pierced through my suit. And then I heard this loud crack and saw this bright green light and I just knew… I knew that was the miraculous.” “How?” Plagg gives Adrien a puzzled look, seemingly having a hard time wrapping his head around the scene Adrien is describing. “I don’t know!” Adrien says, continuing on, “I tried slamming it into a wall but that only made it angrier so the only other thing I could think to do was use cataclysm.” He turns to look at Plagg and that’s when energy starts crackling out of the ring again, suddenly sucking Plagg into it with him shouting protests along the way. Adrien jumps back in surprise, staring down at the ring as the energy starts stinging his skin. He can feel his hand going numb again. “Plagg? Plagg! I didn’t say claws out!” He feels his heart rate spiking. Something isn’t right. “Plagg, claws in.” Nothing. “Plagg, claws in!” Nothing. “I said claws i-” He cuts himself off when he sees the black beads suddenly appear one by one, surrounding his hand like a swarm of wasps. Surrounding his ungloved, unprotected hand. “Plagg?” He whimpers. He’s scared now. With nowhere else to go and no magical outfit to protect him from the raw power of destruction it directs its wrath towards Adrien. The black particles seep into his skin causing unimaginable pain as he falls to his knees. “Plagg, claws out or in or whatever! Please, Plagg!” He begs, but the pain only gets worse. He’s not escaping this. He quickly rips the ring off, in a futile attempt to stop it. He tosses the ring aside and lets it slide under his dresser. Too late. Tears pour down his cheeks as he screams in agony. He cannot hear the shouts from Nathalie or his father. They are asking if he is okay, what is going on? Cracks similar to the one his miraculous bears begin to form in his skin, followed by violent magical energy trying to escape through them. He’s consumed by the rapidly escaping magical light as two pairs of panicked footsteps can be heard racing towards his room. “Adrien!” When the door is slammed open that light is already gone. Adrien is curled up in a ball on his bedroom floor. His eyes are squeezed shut. He is no longer screaming. Nathalie races over to him while Gabriel looms in the doorway. “Adrien! What is going on? Are you okay?” She helps him up and onto his bed. He’s silent. The silence is deafening. Gabriel steps forward. “Adrien. It’s the middle of the night.” He says, sternness in his tone. He eventually lets out a sigh. “Why were you screaming?” “I’m sorry…” Adrien says, shaking from a lingering unknown fear. “I don’t know. I don’t know!” He can’t remember! Why can’t he remember? What happened? What happened? Adrien begins to sob. Nathalie pulls Adrien into a tight hug while Gabriel clenches his fists and turns to leave. “Gabriel.” Nathalie says, calmly. “He needs you.” Gabriel stops and looks back at Nathalie. “You look like you have it handled.” He says and takes his leave. Nathalie’s grip on Adrien gets tighter. He can tell she’s angry but she would never say that. Instead she rubs his back. “Shh…” Her tone is soothing and brings his pulse back down to a normal pace, “It will be okay, Adrien. I’m right here.” It takes a while to calm him down but eventually Nathalie can finally lay Adrien to rest in his bed. “Call if you need anything.” She whispers to him. Once she has made sure all his fear is silenced she heads for the door. “Good night, Adrien.” He feels so tired. He pulls the sheets over his head, shielding his eyes from any light that comes from the moon and the stars. He can no longer remember why he was so upset. He eventually succumbs to sleep, unable to notice yet another sudden bright light that fills his room for merely a second. Chat Noir is now standing in the middle of his room. Chat looks around in confusion before fleeing out the window. He’s in a bit of a daze. Wasn’t that Adrien Agreste’s room? Why was he in Adrien’s room in the middle of the night? What happened? He can’t remember.

Free to Be You and Me: chapter 19
Chapter 18 | Chapter 20
Disclaimer: I don’t own ML.
CW: non-consensual kissing
heads up lila’s on the rampage
tried to make mari look like she tripped her w hot coffee
almost got her akumatised like with the expelled thing and ruined her stuff
jsyk in case she spins a story to you
Adrien’s hand tightens around his phone until he’s surprised it hasn’t cracked yet. Considering that Lila’s on her way for a Gabriel-mandated “study session” (i.e. see how much she can grope Adrien in the span of an hour), Alya’s heads-up is very much appreciated. The last thing he needs is for Lila to get in first and try to get a reaction out of him, since she knows how dear Marinette is to him and how…not dear she herself is.
“What can I do, Plagg?” Adrien mutters. “She lies herself out of every corner. And she’s going after Marinette again. After we made a deal!”
“Eh, don’t worry,” Plagg says, which is very unlike him considering his usual pleas to be allowed to Cataclysm various possessions of Lila’s. He hasn’t quite gotten to body parts yet, which is good because Adrien’s not sure he’ll have the willpower to say no if (when) that finally happens. “Just deal with her today.”
“What? What are you –?”
“Hello, Adrien!” Lila beams from his doorway. Adrien takes a deep breath and counts to ten mentally, while Plagg rustles around in his pocket, no doubt to avoid being seen. “It’s so good to see you! I was worried when you weren’t at school –”
“Spare me,” Adrien says scathingly. Lila’s eyes widen.
“Adrien?” she says through her crocodile tears. “Did I do something wrong?”
“Why do you even bother?” Adrien shuts down his computer – no need to give Lila anything more to snoop through than she already does – and kicks his chair away from his desk so that he’s as far away from Lila as possible. “You and I both know you’re a sneaky little liar. Why do you try and act innocent around me? You’ll never fool me. I’ll never fall for your tales.”
Any trace of faux distress vanishes from Lila’s face. “You still haven’t learned,” she drawls, dumping her bag and strutting over to him. He kicks his chair away again, until his back is to the wall, but she just keeps coming. Advancing. Stalking. “How advantageous it would be to side with me. You don’t have to believe me. You just have to support me.”
Adrien snorts. “Like hell. I’d rather eat glass.”
“Am I really that bad to be around?” Lila pouts.
“Considering everything you’ve done to Marinette? Especially after today? What’s the deal with trying to make her look like she tripped you over?”
“Marinette.” Lila’s face twists. “If I didn’t know any better, I’d think you were sweet on her.”
“She’s one of my best friends. And you keep hurting her, even with our deal. Like today.”
“Ah. Yes. Today.” Lila smiles and tilts her head. “It’s not my fault she’s such a klutz and made me trip over and spill my coffee. I’ve kept my word to the letter. I got her un-expelled and I haven’t tried to do it again. I never promised I wouldn’t make her life hell at any chance I got.”
Adrien clenches his fists. He’d love nothing more than to grab Lila and throw her out the window so hard that she leaves Paris for good, but he’s powerless. She’s got the backing of his father to do whatever she wants to him, like he’s a puppet on her strings. And from the way her smile widens, she knows that he knows this.
“But I could be convinced to leave her alone,” Lila says, crossing her arms. “All it’d cost is an itty-bitty kiss.”
Adrien grimaces. “Fine,” he snaps. “Hurry up. The sooner I get it over with, the sooner I can wash my mouth after touching your face.”
“Oh, no, not a cheek kiss. Not this time. I mean an actual kiss.”
“What?”
“It’s that or nothing. How much do you really love Marinette?”
“What the hell is your problem?” Adrien bursts out. “You know I don’t like you! You know I know you’re a liar and I’ll never believe you! Why do you keep trying? Why do you twist my father around your finger? What the hell do you have on him?”
“I have nothing on him!” Lila says brightly. “He’s just worried that you’re hanging out with an…unsavoury lot. He knows I’m a very good influence. And as for why I keep trying?” She slides onto his lap, and it takes every ounce of Adrien’s strength to not shove her off, to let her stay perched there and do what she wants, in a twisted mimicry of his lady sitting on his lap when she visits.
Think of Ladybug – think of Ladybug – you’re doing this for Marinette –
“I always get what I want,” Lila drawls. Her breath ghosts across Adrien’s lips, and he shudders. “And what I want is you. You’re rich, you’re handsome, you’re famous, and there’s not a thing you can do about it. Don’t worry. You’ll learn soon enough. Now, about that kiss?”
Everything in Adrien screams to say no, to kick her off, to say to hell with the deal and get her far, far away from him forever. But if he does that…he can’t let Marinette pay the price. If he’s the shield between her and Lila, just as he’s Ladybug’s shield in the heat of battle, then so be it.
“Fine,” Adrien spits. Lila’s fox-like smile widens, and she pulls out her phone.
“Good choice.” Then her lips are on his, rough and forceful and taking what they want, the total opposite to Ladybug’s tender, loving kisses full of good, mutual desire. He doesn’t react, but not just so that he doesn’t encourage her; if he makes any movement at all, it’ll be to shove her away, so best not to tempt himself.
It takes. So. Long. By the time Lila pulls away, smiling triumphantly, Adrien’s entire body is numb, and his heart is racing out of his chest – urging him to get away, to escape the danger – and his mind is about ready to ditch his body for good, just so that he never has to deal with something like that again.
“Thank you, Adrien,” Lila says sweetly while Adrien tries not to throw up. Where’s his mouthwash? He needs to get the taste of her out of his mouth – like, now. “I promise I’ll leave Marinette totally alone now. So long as she doesn’t come after me, of course.” She slides off an unresponsive Adrien’s lap. “Shall we start studying now?”
Studying with Lila is never productive on a good day, since she’s always so handsy and more focused on plastering herself all over him than actually getting any schoolwork done. But while Adrien usually resists her advances, gently pushes her away, tries to assert his boundaries as politely as he can, this time he’s just…there. No, he’s not even there. His body is physically there, not moving as Lila strokes his arm and rests her head on his shoulder. His mind is…somewhere between Neptune and Pluto.
“Oh, come on,” Lila pouts all the way from toxic, sulfurous Venus. “It wasn’t that bad, was it?”
Adrien says nothing. He focuses on Pluto; on the icy, rocky surface, uninhabitable, hostile to Lila Rossi. Lila sighs.
“You really know how to make a girl feel special,” she says. “Fine. I guess I’ll cut our study session short. It’s no fun when they shut down on me.”
Adrien blinks and his room is empty. When had Lila left? Why is Plagg floating in front of him with wide, worried green eyes, clearly saying something from the way his mouth is moving, but whatever it is doesn’t seem to be reaching Adrien’s ears.
“– rien! Adrien!” Something soft hits Adrien’s cheeks. “Kid!”
“P-Plagg?” Adrien croaks.
“Oh, thank camembert.” Plagg nuzzles against Adrien. “Thought she broke you.”
“When did she –?”
“Like, ten minutes ago. You were just…sitting there. I thought she’d sucked your soul out and taken it with her.” Plagg snorts. “Wouldn’t put it past her to get akumatised to do that.”
“She – Plagg, she – she just –”
“I know. I’m sorry, kid. Wish I could’ve done more without blowing your identity to the worst person apart from Shadowmoth. All I could do was record it on your phone, so you’ve got proof. I’m kinda sick of her getting her away without any proof. That’s why I told you not to worry and to just deal with her, but I didn’t think it’d be like…that.”
“Plagg, she – kissed me!” Adrien covers his face with his hands. His shoulders shake, struggling to contain the horror, the disgust, the violent need to throw himself into the shower and scrub until his skin is red raw, the same colour as his lady. “I didn’t want – Plagg, I didn’t want – you have to understand –”
“Of course I get it.” There’s something dangerous to Plagg’s voice; something that Adrien has never heard before, no matter what else he might have gone through. “She’s a disgusting piece of work, kid. I just don’t get why you –”
“For Marinette!” Adrien grabs at his hair. Tears start to slip down his cheeks, disobeying his brain’s direct order to not do that. Why can’t Plagg understand? “I had to – she hurt Marinette – my friend – I couldn’t let –”
“Shh. I get it now.” Plagg cuddles Adrien’s cheek while he breaks down. He hugs his knees, squeezing, desperately wishing that it was Ladybug he was hugging instead of himself – his dirty body, covered in Lila, a taint he’ll never be able to wash off –
“It’s no fun when they shut down on me.”
Adrien’s entire body shudders violently. He buries his face in his knees, bracing his arms above his head, hands in his hair, protecting himself from a blow that’s not even in the room.
“You’re rich, you’re handsome, you’re famous, and there’s not a thing you can do about it.”
“Why?” Adrien rasps. “Why can’t people see I’m just…me?”
“Because they’re idiots,” Plagg says. “They act like you’re just some cardboard cut-out.”
“Aren’t I?” Adrien sniffles. “I’m just some model. Some rich kid.”
“You’re also a superhero. You save Paris all the time. You’re more than just a pretty face, kid. And even if that’s all you were, you don’t deserve what that – that witch did to you.”
Adrien’s shoulders shake. He wipes his face – his snotty, surely blotchy face – and tries to push himself to his feet, but his jelly legs just won’t support him, and he crashes back down to the floor.
“I want my lady,” he whispers pathetically.
“Then I’ll go get her,” Plagg says immediately. Adrien’s head whips up.
“Plagg, you can’t – my identity –”
“Relax,” Plagg drawls. “You act like I’m just gonna up and spill the beans. I’m an ancient cosmic being, kid. I think I can get Ladybug here without her suspecting a thing.”
Adrien should say no. He shouldn’t allow anything that has even a chance of spilling his identity. But…he needs Ladybug, needs her warm, clean arms to scrub away Lila’s taint, and his head ends up nodding before his brain can catch up, and Plagg’s immediately zipping through the window to go find Ladybug.
What does he do now? He slips his hand into his pocket and his fingers close around his phone. Plagg said he’d recorded it. Should he –
No, he shouldn’t listen to it.
But he needs to know if he could have done anything.
He couldn’t have. Lila had him cornered.
Did she? He could have pushed her away.
And then what would have happened? He can’t fight. Fighting leads to Bad Things.
He’s just a doll, a mannequin, there for others to move and position and twist as they want.
He betrayed Ladybug. She trusted him.
Him. Adrien. Who is Adrien Agreste if not a rich, pretty face?
“Adrien!” A blur of red darts into his field of view. Adrien gasps and slumps into the red. Ladybug. “Plagg found me – he told me Chat Noir was out and saw what happened, so he came to get me because he knew who I was – even though he was flying around Paris, the irresponsible idiot, but I’m glad he got me –”
“Ladybug,” Adrien says brokenly.
“What happened?”
“I – I cheated – I betrayed your trust –”
“No. No, Adrien!” Ladybug pulls Adrien against her. He lets her, although he probably should resist. The last thing that Ladybug needs is to be dirty. But…he’s never been able to resist his lady. “How in the world was that cheating? You were forced into it. What she did was despicable.”
“But –”
“Shh. No.” Ladybug presses a kiss to the top of Adrien’s head. “It’s not your fault. You can’t help that one of your crazy stalker fans actually has access to you whenever she wants. What in the world is Mr Agreste thinking?”
“Ladybug –”
“Just let it out. Trust me, when I was having my own mental breakdowns, it made me feel a lot better.”
So, Adrien loses the battle against his own body again, and this time, he lets it happen. He lets himself break down fully, sobbing and gasping and snuffling against the love of his life while she holds him and strokes his hair and murmurs soothing things that he can’t quite make out but will never forget. What would he do without Ladybug? What would he do without the one other person who gets it? Who gets him?
“I – I recorded it,” Adrien manages to finally force out. “But she’ll lie her way out of it. She always does. She can do whatever she wants and get away with it. She’ll – Ladybug, she’ll do it again, and I can’t do anything, I’m just everyone’s puppet –”
“And I’ll help you cut the strings.” Ladybug pulls away and Adrien mewls and follows, desperate not to lose her, but she only moves far enough so that she can gently push his head up and meet his eyes with her own bright blue ones. They’re full of compassion, understanding, love, and Adrien shudders and sniffles, because what did he do to deserve such an amazing girl? “You’re not a puppet, Adrien. You’re a person. You have thoughts and feelings and desires of your own. You’re allowed to feel hurt. You’re allowed to feel violated because what she did was wrong. You got that?”
“I –”
“You got that?”
“Yes, mi – Ladybug,” Adrien says, just like he’s in battle with her and she’s given him an order.
“You said you recorded it?” Ladybug unslings her yo-yo with one hand. Her other arm remains around Adrien, grounding him, stopping him from soaring back to Pluto. “Can you copy it to my yo-yo? I wouldn’t put it past someone to get into your phone, whether it’s Lila or your father or some crazy phone thief who leaves you embarrassing and creepy voicemails and then breaks into your locker to steal your phone and delete the voicemail while you’re wondering what’s going on –”
“What?” Adrien’s head spins with the effort of keeping up with Ladybug’s rambling. She laughs shakily.
“Never mind. Just…send it to my yo-yo, alright? So that you have a backup. I promise I won’t show anyone, not even Rena.”
“Especially not Marinette?” Adrien grabs the arm that’s holding the yo-yo. “I did it to protect Marinette – she was already horrified about the deal – you can’t tell her about this, Ladybug, please, she’ll blame herself for what I chose to do –”
“I promise I won’t tell Marinette,” Ladybug says in an odd, high voice. Adrien stares at his lady’s face, searching for any hint of deception, but there’s nothing but earnest honesty and anger in her eyes, and even a touch of fear to her features. And something else that…Adrien wants to say guilt? But why would Ladybug feel guilty? That doesn’t make sense.
“Okay.” Adrien unlocks his phone with trembling fingers. It takes him three tries just to click on the black thumbnail, so Ladybug gently takes over for him. Her yo-yo chimes just a few seconds later.
“Thank you. Can I…kiss you?”
“Yes. Please. Any time.” Adrien’s words tumble over themselves in their haste to escape. Ladybug gives him a sympathetic smile and then leans in, pressing her lips to his gently, and it’s so soft and familiar and right and Adrien gasps and surges up into it. Desperately, he straddles her lap, digs his nails into the back of her suit, drinks her in until she’s all that his senses can detect, grabs her hands and moves them to his waist –
“Adrien,” Ladybug gasps against his mouth, “too far –”
“No – I don’t want –” Adrien pulls away and kisses the corner of Ladybug’s mouth. “Not that – just want you –”
“Hey.” Ladybug presses a finger to his lips. Adrien whines and tries to move around it, to capture her lips again, but she’s a superhero and so she wins every time. “Even if it doesn’t go too far, I don’t know if it’s a good idea. Not right now.”
“But –!”
“Shh.” Ladybug darts in and pecks him on the mouth. “How about I take care of you? I know how to make you feel better. For tonight, at least.”
“You can make me feel better by kissing me,” Adrien says sullenly. Ladybug laughs softly.
“Nice try, my prince,” she says. “I want you to find a bathing suit. I’m gonna run you a bath and help you wash her off. If that’s what you want…?”
“Yes,” Adrien says immediately. He’d prefer Ladybug to kiss him senseless to get rid of Lila’s touch, but a bath is a close second. Except – “But you take care of everyone all the time.”
“Yeah, I do.” Ladybug reaches up and brushes strands of hair off Adrien’s forehead. “But I want to take care of you. Trust me, it’ll be just as relaxing for me.”
“If you’re sure…” Adrien says. Ladybug smiles and nods, so he – very reluctantly – slides off her lap and lets her pull him to his feet.
“I’m sure. You get changed. I, um…” Her face turns scarlet. “I don’t think we’re at seeing that yet!”
“Seeing that?”
“Yes! That! You know!” Ladybug fans her crimson face. “No clothes!”
“O-Oh!” Suddenly, Adrien’s certain that he’s as hot as Ladybug looks. “Um! Yes! Right! I’ll just –!” He backs away towards his walk-in closet, almost trips over a sock that was probably left there by Plagg, and he makes a run for it while he still has some scrap of dignity left. Ladybug’s musical laughter following him makes him doubt that very much.
“See?” Plagg says, his glowing green eyes floating in the darkness until Adrien flicks on the light. “Told you I’d get Pigtails here without blowing your cover.”
Adrien reaches up and scoops Plagg down into a hug. “Thank you, Plagg,” he says, while Plagg yowls in protest. “Thank you.”
“Eww! You’re even cheesier than camembert!” Plagg complains, but he doesn’t seem to be trying very hard to get away. The sound of running water reaches Adrien’s ears, so he releases Plagg to grab one of his swimsuits, then quickly strip and change. Then he remembers that Ladybug had thought about seeing him nude, and he flushes hotter than the sun and almost trips over his own feet.
“Shut up!” he splutters at Plagg, who’s doubled over with laughter in mid-air. Pouting, he turns his back on his kwami and ducks out of the closet to follow the sound of water to his bathroom.
“It’s surprisingly easy to tell how hot the water is through the suit,” Ladybug says in greeting when he slips inside and shuts the door. “Most people would’ve expected us to not be able to feel anything.”
“I wouldn’t,” Adrien says, because he’s got first-hand knowledge that Ladybug can’t know anything about. Her eyes soften.
“Right. The Aspik thing.”
“The –?” Oh. Oh. The time he’d failed to save his lady twenty-five thousand, nine hundred and thirteen times in a row. Before he can dwell on that, Ladybug’s holding out her hand and he accepts it and lets her guide him into the steamy, filling bathtub.
“Too hot?” Ladybug says when Adrien hisses. “I’m sorry, I don’t know how you like your baths –”
“It’s perfect,” Adrien says. Ladybug hums.
“Are you sure? You’re not just saying that?”
“No.” The hotter the water, the better it’ll be at burning away Lila’s touch. “I love it. Really.”
“If you say so. Lie back.”
Adrien does as he’s told, lying back against the ceramic as Ladybug reaches over him to twist the taps and turn the water off. Her hand skims the hot water on the way back, then his bare chest and throat, stained red by the heat of the water, and Adrien lets his eyes flutter shut as he leans into his lady and lets her chase away Lila’s poisonous touch.
“Duck under for a second,” Ladybug says. Adrien obeys, dunking his head under the near-scalding water to wet his hair. As soon as he emerges, Ladybug runs her fingers through the soaked strands, and Adrien purrs and leans back into the touch.
“Don’t stop,” he mumbles. “That’s heavenly.”
“I told you I knew what I was doing,” Ladybug says smugly. “Hold on a second. I’ll go get your shampoo.”
Despite the heat of the water, Adrien’s almost freezing without Ladybug next to him, and it’s almost an eternity before she’s back with him, setting a bottle down on the tile next to her and popping open a second one. She squirts a dollop of shampoo into her palm, then drops the bottle and reaches over to start running it through Adrien’s hair.
“I love you,” Adrien blurts out. Ladybug’s hand stops for just a second, causing Adrien’s heart to leap into his throat – they’ve danced around it but never said those three words to each other, maybe he completely overstepped – but then she returns to running her fingers through Adrien’s hair, spreading the shampoo.
“I love you too, my prince,” she says, and Adrien’s panic dies as quickly as it had started. “It’s like you said before. I know we’re only fourteen and we’re young and dumb and don’t actually know what love is. But I think we do. I know we do. I know I love you, even if it’s dumb teenage love.”
“Stop,” Adrien complains. His body flushes, and not because of the hot water. Ladybug just giggles.
“Scoot down,” she says, so Adrien does as he’s told to let her wash the shampoo out of his hair. Then the cycle begins again with the conditioner, Ladybug’s fingers pressing divine patterns into his scalp, and Adrien’s entire body melts like hot butter, his existence narrowed to the hands in his hair and the smiling, red-masked face next to him. She darts in and kisses him on the forehead, then pulls back and makes a face.
“Am I really that repulsive?” Adrien half-jokes. Ladybug sticks her tongue out.
“No. Blech. Conditioner. It’s disgusting!”
Adrien laughs, long and loud, sagging back against the ceramic bath, until he’s almost crying. Ladybug’s here for him. She’ll always be here for him. No matter what Lila does, she’ll never be able to worm her way into Adrien’s heart with any genuine affection; not when his lady already fills it and always will.

I see her having a staff or something of the like and it has everyone confused because 'she doesn't have magic' yeah she doesn't have magic but she likes to uses it like a walking stick. She likes to watch the students with Ashton during P.E occasionally hit them with her staff.

Somedays when Trein wants to grade papers he'll have immortal!mc tell stories of her youth, she tells the a story of a flying ship with a captain with a hook for a hand, a medicine woman of a young emperor and her ditzy henchmen, a shady voodoo man she met at a tavern, and a woman just as old as her who kidnapped a princess to keep herself young.
During chapter 5 vil catches her in the mirror chamber one day and askes her about the mirror the beautiful queen.
Mc: *walks up to the mirror of darkness, touches the side resting her head on the frame of the mirror* It's been a long time my old friend
Mirror of darkness: *appears* I you my friend I you...

Vil: Miss yuu can I ask you about the mirror.. again?
Mc: *puts down her tea* oh yes! I never did answer your questions earlier
Mc: long ago I heard whipers in a village that a house deep in the forest lived a very handsome man who had magic... he had a daughter a real daddies girl.. I found her odd at first as she'd ask him everyday if she was beautiful and he'd reply 'the fairest in the land'
Rook: *knows where this is going*
Mc: but like most people around that time he became sick. One day me and the girl went around the forest collecting herbs for his medicine... when we came back he gone all that was left was a pile of his clothes and a mirror..
Kalim: *blinking back tears* then what happened 🥺
Mc: the poor thing was inconsolable.. she locked herself in her father's room and refused to comeout. Though I should have told her but I found a letter from him, detailing what he had done.
Deuce: *on the edge of his seat* them what
Mc: he used the rest of his magic to turn himself into a mirror for his daughter.. i'd seen that once before when I stayed the night at a beasts castle, but thats a story for another time.
Vil: was the girl you speak of the beautiful queen?
Mc: yes her name Grimhilde... in his letter he asked if I could look over his daughter make sure she lived a happy and long life... though I feel I failed him.
KINGDOM HEARTS HAPPENS AND YOU CANNOT WILL NOT CHANGE MY MIND!
When yuu has the prophetic dreams before overblot and she's mickey in the mirror
Mc: *notices a shadow in the mirror above the fireplace* that shape seems oddly familiar...
Mirror figure: Aha
Mc: *eyes widen* KING MICKEY
Mickey:*in shock aswell* YUU!
The first years remind her of Sora and Co. and catches herself reminiscening about them. They don't know what to do when they catch her crying.
Ace: M-Mc! Are you okay?
Sebek: WHO DARES MAKE LADY YUU CRY I'LL HAVE THEIR HEADS!
Grimm: *rubbing against yuu worried* henchmen?
Mc: No no.. I'm fine it's just you six remind me of some people I knew years ago.
During history trein asks mc about the great war and if she knew the inside scoop on why it started.
Mc: which one? there have been many
Trien: many..? I know only of one..
Mc: yes! There was the first keyblade war, the first human-fae war, Chernabog's war, the inter-species war, the second keyblade war and the second human-fea war.
Lila: *who came to drop off some papers* two human-fae wars..?
Mc: oh Lila! Yes the first one is when I crowned Maleficent as queen and the second one happend when a close friend of hers betrayed her...there was to be a third on but the human queen that started it was turned into a goat
Trein: keyblade war?
Mc: when magic was just becoming accepted..*clears her throat* it was revealed that there was a secret society of heros who wielded keyblades. It was believed there was a world where all magic come from.
Ace: are there still people who have keyblades?
Mc: no.. the hearts of people to day are to dark..
Deuce: to dark..?
Mc: back then people hearts where pure, why? The keyblade wielders protect people from the darkness. The people believed in a world where all from, only the Wilders could access the world.
Trein: *writing every thing down* what was this place called?
Mc: Kingdom Hearts... but as most stories go all of them wanted control over the world, but they needed the X-blade this caused a war of cataclysmic proportions. It pushed the world into darkness and killed many and shattered the x-blade and scattered across the world... kingdom hearts was to be forever lost.
Scarabia mob: you where alive during all that!?
Mc: no, but a close friend of mine was, but I was alive during the second
Sorry for my rambling and if i broke any of the rules during this feel free to delete of so.. but This is where I'm gonna stop as I've been typing this up for the past hour or so.. 🙇🏽‍♀️🙇🏽‍♀️
No rules have been broken (I didnt have very much anyway lol)
I really like this whole post lol though unfortunately I have not seen kingdom hearts so idk a lot of references here
Also Yuu does carry a staff in formal occasions. Lilia made joke on her saying she looked like an old woman with that but was promptly shut up when Yuu recalled a story of Lilia when he was younger

Only (a salty) human
Marinette is gonna be OOC
“As long as you and I both know the truth, does it really matter?”
Tumblr media
Yes, Marinette decided. Yes, it matters very much.
Marinette took hold of Adrien’s hand, blushing furiously as she did so, and pulled him into a private corner.
Marinette: Adrien, I don’t want to humiliate Lila, but her lies are hurting people. They’re hurting our friends, they’re hurting me. Hell, she’s even lying about Ladybug. Do you honestly think Ladybug would like that.
Yeah, Adrien saw firsthand how much Ladybug hated liars.
Adrien: but people lie all the time. And how is she hurting everyone?
Marinette: seriously? Adrien, she shoved me to the back of the class just to sidle up to you. Do you know what it’s like? I let Chloe bully me out of my seat before and I’m not going to let Miss Liar do it again.
Adrien: well, I could sit next to you, if you want.
While Marinette felt thrilled by this, his pacifying nature was also kind of infuriating.
Marinette: you don’t get it, do you? Your silent method may seem all high and above at first, but it’s not. I didn’t protest because everyone kept pressuring me to ignore the fact that they just changed seats without my consent. Is that what being your everyday Ladybug means? Staying silent when you know something is wrong? Because that seems really messed up. The real Ladybug would never have allowed wrongs to go by without speaking up.
And another thing, why do you seem to care so much about Lila being akumatized? I was almost akumatized this afternoon. And once the truth is known, Rose will probably be akumatized. This whole Lila situation will end with someone being akumatized no matter which direction we choose to take. What matters is how we deal with it.
Adrien: you were almost akumatized.
Marinette: yes; when Lila threatened me. She’s not looking to make friends, Adrien. She’s a bully, like Chloé, only sneakier.
Marinette took a deep breath. “And I don’t care if you disagree or not, but I am done letting bullies tell me what to do. I am done with that, even if everyone turns against me, at least I won’t have the guilt of watering the lying tree.”
With another firm breath, Marinette stomped out.
Originally she wanted to call out Lila for the ear comment but thinking through it, Lila could have said it was a slip of the tongue. She needed stronger proof.
Taking out her phone, Marinette made a call.
A few minutes later, Marinette walked up to the group. “Hey Lila, can you tell us again about how you got your tinnitus?”
Raising an eyebrow and suspecting Marinette was looking for loopholes in her story, Lila nonetheless obliged her with the story of Jagged’s pet kitten.
A sound of choking penetrated the air. “Kitten? Is she kidding me? What Jagged fan would believe I ever owned a kitten? I’m allergic to fur!”
Everyone recognized that British accent. Lila paled.
Everyone looked around only to see Marinette taking her phone out of her pocket, revealing Jagged’s face on her phone.
Marinette: but isn’t there more? Didn’t you tell us, Lila, that Jagged wrote a song about you?
Jagged: Why the hell would I write a song about a minor? Please tell me you didn’t believe her, Marinette.
Marinette: at first I did. But then I realized she was nothing but a liar.
Jagged: don’t worry, I’ll sic my lawyers on her. Especially if there are people who believe her.
As Jagged ended the connection to call for Penny, Marinette kept her focus on Lila.
The class stared round at Lila. “So you don’t know Jagged.”
Before Lila could react, Marinette spoke. She knew the dangers of Lila’s acting.
“So if you don’t know Jagged, then why did you rearrange our seating? And since I doubt your medical disabilities are real, why did you have our classmates buy your rather expensive lunch set?”
Recalling how Lila had taken their money, the others now steered clear. Any feelings of pity were now less likely.
Lila screamed, “how dare you?”
Marinette: how dare I? What was it you called the class? Stupid? And since I was smarter than they were, I had better play along or you would turn them against me, as you so easily proved during lunch?
More guilty looks.
Marinette: in fact now that I think about it, if you are so concernéd about who is lying? Why don’t we just ask your mother if you were really in Achu? If she agrees that you were there for months instead of skipping school, then I won’t argue and I’ll even apologize. What do you say Lila? As class president, I even have her number for emergencies. Shall we call her?
Lila paled even further. With rage? With fear? “Don’t you dare! ...she’s very busy with work.”
Marinette: no mother would ever think work was more important than her daughter. And she pressed the button.
Everyone held their breath. The confrontation had drawn such a large crowd that Lila couldn’t run away anymore. She was surrounded.
The call was answered. “Hello.”
Marinette: hello, is this Lila Rossi’s mother?
Mrs Rossi: yes. Is something wrong?
Marinette: oh it’s nothing serious. We are just missing the official documents for Lila’s school leave. We understand that it is a noble cause for helping Prince Ali organize his charities, but rules are rules.
Mrs Rossi: I’m sorry, but what charities?
Everyone stared either at the phone or Lila.
As Marinette recounted what Lila told the class, there was a long silence.
Mrs Rossi: Lila told me that the school had been shut down for months because of the akumas.
Marinette: yes, school does get cancelled because of akumas, but since they are stopped within the day, classes resume the next day.
Mrs Rossi: thank you for telling me this. I think it’s time I went down to the school and had a chat with your Teachers.
Lila: mama, don’t listen to her! She’s been akumatized.
Marinette: if I’m akumatized then why are you even here?
Lila: I’m being held captive.
Student: um, you’re just sitting on the bench.
Anyway, Lila is exposed. The akuma was actually gone. Let’s just say Adrien listened to Marinette and kept watch. Sensing the akuma, Plagg pointed it out and Adrien caught it before transforming to use cataclysm. He doesn’t like killing butterflies but the dangers of this butterfly cannot be ignored.
Lila was expelled the very same day she returned to school. The class apologized to Marinette, who felt weird after being so salty. Adrien apologized as well for not thinking things through.

Crushed
Stuck under a collapsed building together, Chat Noir and Marinette have a heart to heart.
Ao3 | FF.net
I originally wrote this as a secret santa gift, but it strayed too far from what the giftee wanted, so I did something else. I decided to finish this anyway, and I hope you like it!
This akuma attack was not going great. He called himself ‘Bomb Voyage’ (“Like in the Incredibles?” “Yes, Chat. I do believe Hawkmoth ripped that name.”) And he was blowing things up right and left.
When the Lucky Charm bullhorn fell into her hands, she had some sort of plan in the works, but it all fell short at Chat’s shout.
“My Lady! Look out!”
The building right in front of her, mere feet away, exploded suddenly, the only clue being Bomb Voyage’s finger point.
There was no time to run. No time for Chat to scoop her up. Only impending destruction and carnage.
So Chat leapt, his arms wrapping around her head, and tackled her to the ground as the rubble rained down.
It felt like ages of pain before things settled. They both coughed out lungfuls of plaster dust that still hung in the air. It was mostly dark, with a scant bit of light from above.
Chat was squished, but he pushed up on his arms and felt Ladybug move slightly.
“My Lady?” He asked. “Are you alright?”
“My leg hurts. I may have sprained my ankle. How are you?”
“I took a brunt force to the back when the building collapsed. It hurts, but...I can’t really feel my legs.”
“Chat...”
“Though, that could just be bad circulation. I’m in an awkward position.”
Ladybug’s earrings chirped.
“Crap,” she muttered. “I used my lucky charm. Do you think you can cataclysm your way out of here?”
He twisted his neck in an effort to look around, though the dust of the rubble was still thick. He looked towards the light source above them, able to see where it was coming from, but it looked several feet away. “Negative, my lady. I think we might need some outside help for this one.”
She bit her lip nervously. “I don’t hear anymore explosions.”
“That’s good. Right? Maybe Hawkmoth thinks we got crushed and stopped his akuma.”
“Yeah, that’s great…unless he’s got someone waiting to take our Miraculous’ off our corpses when we’re dug out of here.”
“Ever the optimist, hmm?”
“It’s my talent,” she smirked. Her earrings beeped again and she turned her ear toward Chat. “How much time do I have left?”
“Looks like two minutes.”
“Great…”
“I can close my eyes.” He offered. They were basically nose to nose, and her hands where trapped below his arms, so she couldn’t reach up at all.
“I…I don’t know…”
He raised his eyebrows. “You don’t know?”
“We need to find a way out of here,” she switched topics. “Or find a way to contact emergency services to get us out.”
“My baton is still on my back, if you can reach it.”
Ladybug groped around blindly, feeling for the staff.
“That’s my butt.”
“Oh, sorry.” She blushed, and then moved her hand up. Once she found it, she held it out to her side as she could see the screen. “I’m about to detransform, but I have a cookie for Tikki in my purse. As long as it’s still there, she should be able to recharge before they bust us out of here.”
“I didn’t even think about that,” Chat winced.
Ladybug dialed the number.
“112, what’s your emergency?”
“Hello, this is Ladybug and Chat Noir. We’re in a bit of a pickle.”
“How can we help, Ladybug?”
“A building collapsed on us, and we’re pinned and can’t get out. We’re on Rue de Lappe, not far from Bastille.”
“I’ve got your location on my map. I’m sending the fire department your way.”
“Is there any sign of the Akuma?”
“We’ve gotten similar calls about being trapped, but they stopped coming in a few minutes ago.”
“Thank you. I’m going to extend Chat’s Baton out through the rubble so they can find us.”
“Alright, I will pass that information along. Good luck, Ladybug!”
“Thank you!” Carefully, Ladybug aimed the Baton towards the little hole to the surface, and extended the staff, the top breaking through the topside.
“And now...we wait.” Her earrings beeped again.
“So...you don’t want me to close my eyes?” Chat asked for clarification.
“I’ve been thinking...if I’m the guardian, and something happens to Plagg, like he gets sick or something, you need to be able to find me out of the suit, you know? It’s just you and me...”
“Does that mean you want to know my identity?”
She grimaced. “I should but—“
In a flash of pink, Marinette remained, looking sheepishly at him. “...I need a little time to come to terms with this.”
His eyes were impossibly wide, staring at her, drinking her in in the scant light. “Marinette? Marinette Dupain-Cheng?”
“Howdy?” She squeaked.
He squeezed his eyes shut.
“Chat?” She asked, fearfully.
“Sorry,” he whispered. He opened his eyes again, and his lip wobbled. “I just—I’m trying really hard not to cry.” Despite this, a tear fell from his eye and landed on her cheek.
She tried not to cry herself. “Are you that upset?” She whispered.
“Upset?! No! How could I ever—Marinette, I’m thrilled beyond belief! If it was anyone else—“ he clenched his eyes shut again, as more tears started to fall. “I admire you, and trust you, and respect you more than anyone else.”
“Chat...”
He smiled tenderly. “You know, I had hunches. I was almost completely certain until Kwamibuster, too!”
That made her wince again. “Oh Chat, you know I didn’t mean to lie to you...”
“I know, I know, at the time, it was too risky.” He continued to smile, his tears subsiding. “I know this isn’t ideal, but I’m glad I get to see you now.”
“Kinda makes Evillustrator funny, huh?”
He laughed. “You’re right! I forgot about that! Hey! You called yourself cute!”
“I am cute!” She pouted.
“You are cute,” he agreed, taking her in. “I’ve stared at your face a lot, but you look so so different without the mask.”
“It’s the glamour,” she elaborated. “That extra bit of magic that makes it hard to connect the dots.”
“I know how it works,” he smirked.
“Right...sorry, this is just...weird.”
“Good weird?”
“I feel naked.”
“You just say the word, and I’ll get naked with you.”
She threw him an unamused look. “Don’t be gross.”
“Sorry, I can’t help cracking jokes around you. Although, I’m sure you were wishing I was secret mystery boy right now instead, right?” He waggled his eyebrows in an attempt to hide his heartache. “So who is it? It’s Luka, right?”
It was like she had her mask on again, cheeks red as a tomato. “No...it’s not Luka.”
“Oh...aren’t you guys dating?”
“Not anymore. We did, for like a week. If you could even call it dating. He just came over to my house during my downtime, and played his guitar while I worked on commissions and stuff. It was nice and all...but I prefer the piano.” She looked away.
“Piano, hmm?” He smirked. “You know, I’m an excellent piano player...and the real mystery guy is too?”
“You can’t laugh.”
“I would never.”
“I doubt that,” she said flatly.
“I promise, I know you don’t like people shallowly. So whoever it is, I know it’s genuine.” He smiled softly, encouragingly.
Marinette screwed up her lips and admitted, begrudgingly. “Fine. It’s Adrien. Adrien Agreste.”
The sound that Chat let out was not a laugh. But it wasn’t a great sign. It was like a wheeze, but a gurgle.
“What’s wrong?”
“I just...” he blinked several times, trying to convince himself this wasn’t a dream. Ladybug was Marinette! And she had a crush on him! “I...am surprised, is all. I didn’t know you were...close?”
“I sit behind him in class. He’s one of my best friends. Our best friends are dating, so sometimes we end up being third wheels together?”
“Oh. And this is the same guy as before?”
“It’s always been Adrien.”
Chat hoped she couldn’t hear the pounding in his chest. “Oh...even when Glaciator hit? When I found you sad on your balcony?”
“Yep. He was supposed to meet us for ice cream, and he didn’t show...I kind of told Andre that love was bogus, and that’s why he got akumatized.”
Chat laughed at that. “Aww, it’s okay, Marinette. I’m sure he had a good reason for not showing up...”
“I’m used to it,” she said dully. “His father is a huge pain in the ass. I used to respect him, but now...he’s a jerk. He constantly holds Adrien’s freedom ransom to make him do stuff. It kills me! You know when I was in New York?”
“Yeah?”
“I had to beg his father to let him go. It was a class trip, and he was the only one not allowed to go! Just because his father is so concerned with his safety.”
“Can you blame the man? We’re currently trapped under a pile of rumble.”
“But as soon as I’m out, I’ll lucky charm and cure everything! Poof! Sprained ankle gone! Whatever’s wrong with you, gone!”
“What do you think your parents would do if they found out you were Ladybug?”
Marinette thought for a moment, and answered honestly. “Probably be sort of angry, and worried. But I think they would understand. They respect us a lot, even after my dad got akumatized.”
“Don’t remind me.” He groaned.
“What about your parents?” She asked.
“My mom would have been excited. I think. Worried too, but excited for me. But my father...well, he’d rip off my miraculous and make sure I never saw the light of day again.”
“That bad, hm?”
“I’m not exaggerating. I’m in the same boat as Adrien, extremely sheltered.”
“I’m sorry,” she smiled softly. “I didn’t know.”
“I didn’t really want you to know. Chat Noir is supposed to be my safe place, my wild and crazy side. I’m afraid if I start talking about home, I’ll admit things that civilian me doesn’t want to.” He exhaled, his chest bumping with hers. “God, it is just so easy to talk to you. Now more than ever.”
“Really? You know me that well?”
“I know enough. And maybe it’s just because I’ve got you pinned and you can’t go anywhere.”
She laughed at that. “Well, we’ll probably be here for a while. And...I still want you to hide your identity for a while, but if you want to talk about your life a little more, that’s fine.”
“You sure?”
“Yes. It really is time for us to know who each other are, I’m just...not ready.” She huffed, and his bangs fluttered. “This was unavoidable, but let’s plan for your reveal, so I can be emotionally prepared.”
“You won’t be. You will cry.”
“You say that with an awful lot of certainty.”
“Trust me, when you behold me in all of my unmasked glory, you’ll cry.”
“Alright. Can’t wait to prove you wrong.”
He smirked.
“Chat? Are you shivering?”
“Uh…yeah, kinda.”
“Are you cold?”
“Not…not exactly. I’m holding up a lot of rumble so it doesn’t crush you…and I’m pretty claustrophobic.”
“Why didn’t you say anything earlier!?”
He laughed, but it lacked any mirth and was filled with quiet panic. “Uh, just…you know…trying to stay calm.”
“What can I do to help?”
He exhaled shakily. “I don’t know, but talking about it isn’t helping.”
“Okay, well, why don’t you keep eye contact with me, and…let’s just talk.”
“About what?”
“I know you’ve got a whole list of questions you’ve been dying to ask me. Now’s your chance.”
“Damn it!” He nearly shouted. “I had a whole notebook full of questions I wanted to ask you, but it’s at my house!”
“Well, you know where I live, so you can ask me some other time if you want.”
“Deal!” He screwed up his lips. “But first, since you mentioned it, Weredad.”
“Oh god…”
“Why did you say you were in love with me?”
She winced. “To be quite honest, I thought you were going to find out who I was…and the poor excuse just flew out of me before I could think through the consequences. I didn’t think my dad would overhear anything, and I didn’t think you’d show up for brunch.”
“You didn’t think I’d show up? Me? The biggest gentleman in Paris?”
“Okay fine, I hoped you wouldn’t show up.” She rolled her eyes.
“Now that I’m thinking about it, there’s a lot of shenanigans that could have been prevented if—hold the phone, how did you do Multimouse?!”
“Fox miraculous,” she shrugged.
“The Fox! Of course!”
She laughed, his reaction calming her nerves. “I understand what you mean now, it’s easy to talk to you. It’s always easy, but I didn’t notice until you said it.”
He wouldn’t meet her eyes. “You don’t always feel that way.”
“I mean, I get frustrated with your jokes when I’m trying to be serious, but that doesn’t mean—“
“That’s not what I meant.”
“Oh?”
He swallowed thickly. “Civilian me…you…you have a hard time…” He trailed off, not looking at her face.
“Chat?”
“Did you ever tell Adrien? That you…you know?”
She tilted her head at the sudden topic change. “Uh…no. I tried, but it was never meant to be. Every time I did, something would go catastrophically wrong.”
“Like what?”
“Like...I gave him this scarf, right? For his birthday. And I forgot to sign it initially, so I snuck into his house and left a sticky note on it. Somehow, it still managed to go wrong, and he thought it was from his dad.”
Chat stared at her, wide eyed. “And you never told him?”
“No, he was happy believing that it was from his dad. His happiness is all I want.”
It was hard to describe the look on Chat’s face. Almost pained, but still full of love. Like seeing something so precious it brings you to tears. “You did that for him? You really love him that much?”
She looked away, “Unfortunately.”
“Why unfortunately? Is he a jerk?”
“No, not at all. I just…I know he doesn’t love me back. ‘Oh Marinette, you’re such a great friend.’ ‘I’m so glad I have a friend like you.’ ‘Please stay my friend forever!’” She shook her head. “That boy has me firmly friend-zoned.”
He winced, “I’m sure he didn’t mean it like that. He probably really really likes you, and just wants you to know how much he appreciates your friendship.”
“And that’s another reason I can’t confess. He doesn’t have a lot of friends, and I don’t want to ruin our friendship.” She groaned. “I sound so pathetic! It’s so stupid.” She shook her head. “I wish I had your bravery.”
“My bravery isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. It’s gotten me hurt pretty badly, after all.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Don’t apologize,” he smiled at her softly. “You feel how you feel, and I just hurt myself.” He gnawed at his lip. “Actually…can I ask a really dumb question?”
“I don’t see why not.”
“You don’t have to answer it…actually, no. I shouldn’t ask at all. Nevermind.”
“Well now you have to ask,” she chuckled. “I’m curious.”
He rolled his eyes. “Okay, but don’t hate me.”
She nodded him on.
“Why…why did you go out with Luka if you knew I loved you? Do you also like Luka? Or…are you just that…repulsed by me?”
Marinette’s mouth fell open in quiet shock, and she inhaled some dust. She turned so she wouldn’t cough in his face at least.
“Sorry,” he tried to sooth. “I told you it was stupid. You can date whoever you want…”
She cleared her throat, and then wheezed out. “You just wanted it to be you.”
“…yeah…”
“Chat,” she leaned up to tap her nose against his. “To say I have absolutely no feelings for you would be a lie.”
He looked hopeful. “Really?”
“They’re still developing. But I noticed thoughts I have about you sometimes. Missing you, thinking you’re cute…but Luka was the safer option at the time. I was trying desperately to get over Adrien. Luka and I weren’t really friends first, so if it didn’t work out, it wasn’t a big loss. But with you…” She looked into his eyes, an insurmountable amount of pain and unsaid words just beyond his reach. “I could lose everything.”
“You won’t lose me, My Lady.” He said softly.
“Oh kitty,” she moaned. “I…I never want to lie to you…but there’s something that I haven’t told you. Something I should have a long time ago. I just…don’t like thinking about it.”
“What is it?”
“Chat Blanc.”
At her hesitation, he prodded her on. “What’s a Chat Blanc?”
Her whole face tightened, lips curling into a thin line, eyes squinted hard, and brow furrowed. “It’s…he’s your akumatized self.”
“What?” He breathed. “But I’ve never been akumatized.”
“No, not anymore. You see…Bunnyx helped with it. Somehow, the event of me signing a gift to Adrien triggered a series of events that got you akumatized. I don’t know what the correlation was, but…you knew my name, and you said our love destroyed the world.”
“The world?”
“I hate thinking about it,” she winced again. “The whole of Paris flooded, the Eiffel tower knocked on it’s side, the moon exploded. Everyone, including me and Hawkmoth, turned to dust. You cried when you saw me. You asked me to save you, but you also wanted my earrings, wanting to fix everything yourself. So we fought.”
“I assume you won, if you’re here.”
“Yeah...the Akuma was in your bell. Your all white bell, on your white suit, with your white hair and blue eyes...” she shuttered. “I still see you like that in my nightmares.”
“Why didn’t you tell me earlier?”
“I didn’t want to mention it. I didn’t want to worry you, and I didn’t want to remember. I knew I should have told you sooner, though. I’m sorry.”
“...I understand.” He swallowed and exhaled in a whoosh, all the debris above them shifting. He moaned, ending with a hiss.
“Chat?”
“Sorry, I moved and realized that I’m a little more hurt than I thought.”
“What’s ‘a little more hurt’?”
“Uh…I think I’m…I’ve been impaled?”
“What!?”
“It’s not that bad, the suit took most of the pain. I just…am having a little hard time breathing, and I thought it was from my claustrophobia, but I think something is lodged in me.”
Very carefully, Marinette reached up and felt along his back. A lot of debris was laying flush to his suit, but as she moved her hand around, she noticed he felt wet and sticky.
“Yeah, I think you’re bleeding, kitty.” She said so sadly. She touched where the wound was and he cried out in pain. It was his lower back, by his spine.
“I’m sorry!” She pulled her hand away.
“S’kay,” he hissed out. “God damn, that hurt.”
“I promise, as soon as we get out of here, I’ll magic you right as rain. Just...just hold on, kitty.”
He opened an eye to look at her, still fond through his pain. “Are you panicking?”
“Yes! I was worried when the building collapsed, but now I’m on the verge of pure panic!”
“I must admit, this is not how I expected today to go.” He breathed slowly, the pain subsiding when he held still. “Actually, I didn’t imagine this happening when I found out who you are. You being Marinette is like…the cherry on top of a diarrhea sundae.”
“Do you like cherries?”
“I love cherries.” He whispered. “I got grounded today.”
“Oh.”
“I was having lunch with my father, a rare treat. My friend texted me and I answered without thinking. My father became upset that I would do something so ‘rude’. He said if my friends were more important than him, then he shouldn’t bother eating with me. Then he took my phone.”
“That’s the kind of assholery that I’ve come to expect from Adrien’s dad. You’re in that boat too?”
“Unfortunately, yes. Come to think of it…he’s probably the reason I got akumatized in that other timeline.”
“You think so?”
“It’s a hunch. I don’t often get upset about things, but when I do, it’s usually because of him.” He sighed, ending with a wince. “That’s something I haven’t admitted to myself until now.”
“Kitty...”
“I didn’t mean to bring that up...”
“It’s okay. I’m glad you did. I want to be able to support you where you need it.” She could see that he was spiraling into depression, and quickly sought to remedy that. “What was your daydream like? When you would find out who I was?”
A twitch of a smile took his face. “I knew I would spend a long time staring at you, memorizing what you look like without the mask.” He took a shaky breath. “And I thought, when we decided to share our identities, it would be because you finally fell for me. So there was a kiss. And a lot of roses. It was sappy...but it made me happy to think about it.”
“Can I ask...what it is that you love so much about me? In case you don’t know, there’s a lot of differences between Marinette and Ladybug.”
“I know,” he smiled. “But there’s plenty of similarities. Your strength, for example.”
She laughed. “Chat, Ladybug can throw you across the city. But Marinette couldn’t even lift you.”
“I bet you could! We should test it later! But I meant your strength of heart.”
“You sound like an anime character.”
“Well, it’s important to me.” He blushed. “You aren’t wishy-washy. You don’t cater to the voices around you. You do what’s right. You want justice. Even when akumas and civilians tell us to go or step down, you get up and fight.”
“I do that?”
“Yes. The day you stood up to Hawkmoth, and you promised Paris that you would fight for them until the end? That moment, I said, ‘no matter who that girl is, I love her.’ And even now, it hasn’t stopped. I may even love you more.”
“Chat…” She sniffed. “I…I care about you so much. And I know that if Adrien wasn’t in view, I’d fall for you hard and fast. But I can’t.”
“I know, Marinette. Just knowing…that maybe someday…”
“All the more reason to get rid of Hawkmoth, right?”
He nodded, a tear slipping from his eye and landing on her cheek. “Today sucks.”
“I’m sorry.”
“It’s really not your fault. And I’d much prefer that you were here, under me, than being alone. I’m handling my claustrophobia a lot better because of it.”
“I’d much rather be under you too.”
He gave her a smile, and then snorted with a little blush. “Oh my lady…”
“I thought we were being mature.”
“Me? Mature? Come on.”
“Yeah, I should have known better.”
“You’re beautiful too,” he added. “I’ve always thought so. As Ladybug and Marinette. I saw you with your hair down once, and it’s haunted me ever since.”
“You saw me with my hair down?” She questioned, trying to ignore the hot blush on her cheeks.
“Yeah, it looked really nice on you. I know it’s not practical for crime fighting, but…”
“Maybe for a patrol,” she offered. “When things are calm.”
A smile graced his face as he sighed deeply.
The pile above them shifted, and Chat let out a cry of pain.
“Kitty?”
“This sucks!” He moaned, leaning his forehead down to her face. “Sorry, whatever is in me moved, and I really felt it.”
“Please don’t apologize, Chat. If anything, I should apologize, you took the hit for me!”
“My Lady…you didn’t do anything wrong. If I can help it, I will never let you get hurt.”
She closed her eyes, trying not to cry. “It breaks my heart that you would do that. I don’t want you to be a meat shield, I want you to be my partner.”
“You said it yourself. Once we’re out of here, you’ll do Miraculous Cure and set me right. So I’ll take the hits if I have to.” He sucked in a harsh breath. “Even if it hurts like a bitch.”
With her hands trapped at her sides, she couldn’t reach up and wipe his tears away. So she opted for the next best thing. She leaned up and pressed a kiss to his cheek. “Thank you for protecting me. I know you’re going to say it’s your job, but I really do appreciate how much you look out for me.”
“I love you, Marinette. Of course I’m going to protect you.”
She shook her head slightly. “How can you just say that so casually?”
“Why bother hiding it? You know already. I’m not going to bottle it up.”
“I just…wish I could do that. With Adrien. I wish I could walk right up to him and say, ‘I love you, you magnificent human being’ and crush my lips to his perfect face.”
Chat hid his blushing face in her shoulder. “You should. I bet you’d make his day.”
“Yeah, or he’d freak out, and sue me for sexual harassment, and then I’ll be the laughing stock of the school, no, all of Paris! The whole world, maybe!”
“Do you often catastrophize?” He chuckled. “I’ve heard you do it before.”
“Usually only with Adrien. I just…don’t want to mess things up.”
“I don’t think you will. I know Adrien. He’s a nice boy. He won’t turn you down.”
“You can’t possibly know that.”
“Call me a psychic.”
She scoffed. “Whatever.” Then she shook her head. “Whether or not you’re confident he won’t reject me…I don’t think I’ll ever tell him. I’ve tried to get over him, but I just look at him and melt all over again. I’m sorry Chat.”
He was quiet, his face resting next to her head, cheek against her ear. After a moment of contemplation, he asked, “hey, you like pink, right?”
“Oh? Uh, yeah.”
“I’ll do it tomorrow. A dozen pink roses, maybe some red and white in there too for flavor.”
“You’re doing what tomorrow?”
“I’m going to reveal my identity tomorrow.”
“After all that? What about Adrien?”
“Don’t worry about him right now. I’ve been thinking. If you and I know who each other are, in a crisis, we’d be able to communicate better.”
“What do you mean? What kind of crisis?”
“I’m just trying to imagine what happened with my akuma. If there was a problem with my father or miscommunication, we could better solve it without identities in the way.”
“Okay, yes…” she considered. “But please don’t get your hopes up, okay? I would love to spend time with you out of the suit, but I won’t fall for you instantly.”
“I suppose you’re right. After all, how can I compare to the amazingly handsome Adrien Agreste? Well, he won’t be a problem for much longer.”
She frowned. “You say that like you’re going to kill him.”
He laughed. “No no, Bugaboo,” he said fondly. “Look, everything will make sense tomorrow, I promise…as long as I don’t bleed out down here first.”
“You’re acting really jovial for someone with a mortal flesh wound.”
“Tis a scratch.” He breathed a shuddering breath. “Or so I hope.”
“Ladybug! Chat Noir!” A male voice called from up above.
“Ugh, finally,” Marinette muttered to herself. “We’re down here!” She called.
“We’ll get you out as soon as we can! Any injuries?”
“Chat has a…bit of a scrape.”
“An ambulance is on the way!”
Marinette didn’t want to tell him it didn’t matter. Once she did the cure, he’d be right as rain.
Right?
“Marinette,” Tikki piped up. “I’m all set, whenever you are.”
“Alright. Tikki, Spots on!”
The pink flash only helped the first responders locate them quicker.
“There’s the baton!” His voice sounded closer. The light above was distorted by a rain of plaster, before it was replaced by flashlight light. “Hello?”
“We’re down here!” Ladybug called, moving her arm under Chat.
“Can either of you move?”
“Chat’s pinned, but I might be able to wiggle out, with some help.”
“We’ll get a sling. We might be able to pull you up and out.”
“Once I get my arms free, I should be able to cast the cure and set everything right.”
“Great plan, Ladybug! We’ll have you out in a minute.”
Ladybug nudged Chat’s nose with her own. “I’ll cast it as soon as I’m free. Can you hold out that long?”
“I’ll have a dozen pink roses. And I’ll wear something nice, like a sweater. Or maybe a dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up. I heard the ladies love that.”
“Chat?”
“I’m trying to focus on something else instead of being trapped.” He explained. “Sorry, I might not be very useful for the next few minutes.”
“Okay,” she kissed his cheek. “You do what you have to.”
The fire department lowered a strap attached to a chain into the hole. “If you can maneuver that under your arms, we can pull you out.”
Using Chat’s Baton, Ladybug was able to pull the strap closer. Very slowly and carefully, she wriggled it under her armpits, careful not to jostle Chat in the process.
“Jewelry could be fun. I know she doesn’t like it when I’m extravagant, but surely she would cherish it if I gave her a ring.” He had his eyes shut tight, his brow furrowed.
Ladybug gave Chat a pitiful look.
“Alright, I’m ready!” Ladybug called to the rescue crew.
She was pulled out from under Chat. Though, she had been supporting his lower half, and he sank to the ground as she slid away from him. This jostled the debris violently, and he cried out in horrible, agonizing pain. It was the worst sound she had ever heard.
“Chat!”
He kept howling, sounding like he was being ripped apart from the inside out.
Ladybug pushed on the piles around her, hurrying to get free.
The moment she broke the surface, she called for her Lucky Charm.
It was a rose, and she teary-eyed through it up into the air, and called for the cure.
The explosion of Ladybug’s surrounded her, mending her ankle and silencing Chat’s cries.
She touched down on solid, undisturbed concrete, and turned to find Chat face down on the ground.
“Kitty!” She cried, voice cracking as she rushed to him.
He pushed up on one arm. “I’m okay, My Lady. Just a little winded.”
“Are you sure?”
He stood slowly and stretched. “Yeah. All cured.”
She hugged him. Tight and sure, maybe squeezing a little harder than she should.
“Bug, I can’t breathe.” He chuckled.
“Sorry, I just...”
He hugged her back. “I’m never going to turn down a hug though.”
Her earrings beeped.
“Are you both alright?” Asked the EMT on the scene.
“We’re all better,” Chat assured. “Thank you for your help!” He gathered Ladybug close to him and put an arm around her waist. “We gotta go though!”
Ladybug only had a second to realize what he was doing, before she was lifted off her feet and into the air.
“I can travel myself, you know. I still have time.”
“Sure,” he shrugged.
He carried her all the way to her balcony, before setting her down. Her transformation ran out just as they landed.
“Thanks for the lift, Kitty.” She scratched under his chin. But as she looked in his eyes, she saw tears. “Chat?”
He sniffled and hugged her again. “Just...a sucky day. I wanted to hug you in privacy. I know how you get when people assume things about us.”
“Well, it’s different when you’re getting handsy and when you need comfort from a traumatic experience.”
“I never get handsy,” he argued. “I just like to be close. I’m touch starved.”
“Well, from what you told me today, I believe you.”
He laughed mirthlessly, and pulled away. “I really do feel better now.” He reached up and cupped her face, letting his thumb trail across the apple of her cheek. “No matter how bad this day was, it will never taint the absolute elation of finally seeing you.”
“Chat...” she blushed.
“I must be the luckiest man on Earth. Marinette Dupain-Cheng and Ladybug, all rolled into one. I can’t believe it.”
“Two transformations and you still don’t believe me?”
He smiled. “My brain believes, but my heart never gets so optimistic.” He cast his gaze away. “Even if you...change your mind...” he mused.
“About what?”
“Nothing. Never mind. I’ll just...see you tomorrow. With a dozen pink roses.”
“I’ll get a vase ready.”
He reluctantly pulled away, like tearing himself from her was physically painful. He hopped up on the railing of her balcony, and with a little salute, he hopped into the night.
“I’m proud of you, Marinette.” Said Tikki. “It had to be hard being that honest with him.
“I didn’t really have a choice. I can’t imagine how much worse that experience would have been for him with his eyes closed the whole time.”
“It’s over now. And tomorrow, you’ll know who he is too!”
Marinette whined. “I don’t know if I’m ready for that...”
“It’s a little late for that. What? Are you going to run at the first sight of flowers?”
“I might.”
“It’ll be fine. Marinette, I know who Chat is. And I promise, it’ll all work out fine. Great even. Just, take a shower, and go to bed. Then you can wake up early and mentally prepare yourself.”
Marinette chuckled as she dropped back down into her room. “What would I do without you as a life coach?”
“Sleep through most classes.”
“It was a rhetorical question.”
In the morning, with the extra sleep Tikki had urged her to get, Marinette rose and dressed.
Then the nerves turned on.
“What if I just fake sick?”
“Don’t you dare! You’d hurt his feelings!”
“You’re right...but I really do feel like I might throw up.”
“Just relax. You’re going to love this.”
“If you say so...”
After breakfast, Marinette wandered over to school leisurely. Tikki would say she was stalling, but Marinette would disagree and state she was simply taking advantage of being early.
At the front steps, students were gathered. No roses. In the courtyard, teens milled about. No roses. In the locker room, her locker was devoid of anything that wasn’t supposed to be in there.
“Well well well,” said Alya, with too much bravado. “Lookie who’s early!”
“Yuck it up. I was tired and went to bed early last night.”
“You sure you aren’t eager to see Adrien today? He looks pretty cute in that button up.”
In all the confusion surrounding Chat, Marinette had honestly forgotten about Adrien. Her. Forget about Adrien. Perish the thought.
“I mean...it would be a bonus.” She muttered.
“Well, he’s up in the classroom. If you were wondering.”
She wasn’t. Or hadn’t been, until now. But it seemed that Chat wasn’t ready to reveal himself yet, and Marinette still had time to prepare.
She ascended the steps and headed to the classroom.
What she wasn’t expecting, was seeing Adrien standing there, sunlight filtering through the window to make a halo in his hair. He wore a black button up shirt, sleeves rolled up, and had a dozen pink roses in his hands as he talked to Nino.
Dare she hope? Dare she dream?
She just stood in the doorway, staring, before he noticed her.
“Good morning, Marinette.” He smiled at her, looking warm and inviting and…nervous?
“Goo-goo-good morning, Adrien.” She stumbled. She glanced down to the flowers, then up to his face. “Um…those don’t happen to be for me, do they?”
With a twinkle in his eye, he smirked. “Why? Just because something is pink, you think it’s for you?”
She deflated. “Haha, right…that was really forward of me.”
With a pleasant hum, he leaned in and whispered in her ear. “I’m just messing with you, My Lady. These are for you.” He placed the bouquet in her shell-shocked hands.
“My...?” She breathed. The word was just a whisper, barely heard by even him.
His smile was broad and gleeful, squinting his eyes and coloring his cheeks. “Mmm-hmm!!” He hummed eagerly as he nodded.
Marinette had to shut her eyes as a sound like a laugh and a sob burst from her lips. Tears started immediately, and there was no way to stop it.
“I told you you would cry,” he teased.
“You jerk!” She blubbered. Then she tossed the flowers at a confused Nino before throwing her arms around Adrien, and sobbing into his shoulder. “I love you, Kitty.”
He squeezed her back. “Do you really? Because I’m getting mixed signals.”
“You’re awful. You’re wonderful. I’m a mixed bag of emotions. Just hold me.”
“Can do!”
As other students came in, seeing the couple embraced, they gave them thumbs up and congratulatory back pats.
And then Lila entered.
She halted, hid her sneer, and said, “oh no! Marinette! What’s wrong? Why are you crying on Adrien like that?”
He patted Marinette’s hair. “Happy tears, no worries.”
Marinette refused to let Lila ruin this moment. It was far too perfect. Adrien was far too perfect, the flowers, her kitty...
Mustering all her strength, she hooked her arms under his, turned and spun his into a dip.
“My lady?” He breathed, in awe.
“You’re the love of my life. I should have kissed you yesterday. I definitely wanted to.”
“You did?” He smiled drunkenly.
“Yes, like this.” And she slammed her lips to his, kissing him just like she had in her dreams.
Adrien let out a contented little mewl as he tangled his fingers in her hair.
The class went wild with roars and cheers.
Before she could drop him, Marinette righted Adrien. “Sorry, I just...wanted to do that for a while now.”
Adrien nuzzled her cheek with his nose. “Oh don’t worry, Bugaboo. You can smooch me whenever.”
Nino made a gagging sound.
“Oh, well I’m very happy for you guys,” Lila feigned a smile. “But Adrien, are you sure your father will be okay with this?”
Chloe, who had known this was coming since she saw the roses, stood and stalked over. “Okay, you’re done. Bye!”
“Chloe, I’m just trying to be rational...”
“And Adrien is the most deserving person for a happy ending...even if it’s with Dupain-Cheng.” She cast Marinette a glance and rolled her eyes. Then she looked back at Lila. “Though, he could do worse.”
This made Marinette and Adrien giggle.
Lila scoffed. “Fine! Make me the bad guy! But don’t come crying to me when Gabriel tells you to break it off!”
Adrien whispered in his new girlfriend’s ear. “Even if my father makes Adrien and Marinette break up, Ladybug and Chat Noir follow their own rules. It might not be the most fun, but we’ll make it. Then, once I’m 18, I’ll propose.”
Marinette laughed, kissing him swiftly. “Oh my sweet kitty. Let’s take it slow for a little while. We have the rest of our lives to be that insufferable couple.”
Alya, who had come in not that long after Marinette but stood quietly in the door, finally spoke up. “Adrien, I couldn’t bear to tear you away from your Princess. So I’ll take your seat.”
Adrien just grinned in gratitude and hugged Marinette. “This makes that building collapse yesterday totally worth it.”
Does that mean...you had a crush on me?” She teased.
“No, my Lady, I fell for you.”

Fly Away
Episode 1: Paon Lilas (*Lilac Peacock)
Ao3 Link (If I actually continue this, check my Ao3 of the same name “Fanartfunart”.. Considering how much mental real estate it’s taking up, I probably will.)
An au in which Adrien didn't succeed in trying to 'sneak' into brick and mortar school and therefore also didn't get the Black Cat miraculous..... but he did find a pretty peacock. (It's in his house... I mean....) Ladybug and Féline Sombre (Who uses She/They. Black Cat hero name thanks to @broadwaytheanimatedseries) get some help from the mysterious peacock miraculous holder, but Ladybug isn’t sure he’s 100% doing this for good.
Warnings: Canon typical violence.... Not much else? Tell me if I need to add anything.
A/N because Brick and Mortar schoolers never know that’s what they are: "Brick and Mortar school" is a homeschool/online school method of reference to in-person schools before calling it “in-person” was a thing. I 100% think Adrien would use that phrasing. (if the writers knew it existed...Tho. Idk if there's a French equivalent)
-*-
Adrien knew he shouldn’t be doing this. This was a worse idea than trying to sneak his way into brick and mortar school. He’d only seen it by accident. He wasn’t even doing very good at committing to breaking into his father’s mysterious safe. This was the third time he’d come back down to find out what was behind that painting.... He should really not be doing this. But...a secret compartment behind his mother’s painting was just… too interesting to ignore. He unfurled an umbrella to cover himself from the cameras his father probably had in the room. Inching his way to the painting of his mother.
...He had had far too much time to think about this. He only had to punch in the code once (his mother’s birthday- frankly, his father really needed a code harder to guess), for the safe to click and unlock.
The contents… were not what he anticipated. It looked like a keepsake box, not a super secret compartment. He ghosted a hand over the frame of his mother’s photo, blinking away the lingering sadness. ...A peacock brooch? He picked it up, tumbling it in his hand. It almost hummed with energy. He tilted his head, brow raised.
Footsteps.
Adrien frantically closed the hidden compartment and glancing for a hiding place. The umbrella closed over his head just as he dove for the curtain. That… might bruise. He flattened himself against the windowsill, going on his tip-toes on the barely-there window ledge.
From the distinct clack of dress shoes on the floor, his father had entered the room. Adrien held his breath, hearing his father’s footsteps come closer. A strange whirr. Then silence. Adrien stood there for a long moment, feeling the edges of the peacock brooch dig into his clenched fist. Heart hammering. But father never called for Natalie, or his bodyguard, or moved, or anything. It was eerily quiet. The umbrella peaked out of the curtain. He popped open the umbrella to find… no one.
"What?" Adrien whispered to himself. He frowned, and tiptoed out from the window, before racing out of the room, down the hall, and outside. Once safely in the garden, he dropped the umbrella. He slid down into the grass, taking deep breaths.
The brooch vibrated.
Wait. The brooch vibrated? He opened his hand. He had to shield his face from the burst of light. He opened an eye to see… a tiny… hummingbird? No, it was a peacock. Why is a peacock… floating? And Tiny? And why isn’t he sneezing? Are miniature peacocks hypoallergenic? “What the...”
“Ooooo, hello!” The creature said cheerfully, “Lovely weather isn’t it? Beautiful flowers! Nice to be outdoors for once isn’t it? Are you my new miraculous wielder? You’re so cute! You look almost like…” tears welled up into the miniature peacock’s eyes. Adrien looked around frantically. It kept talking unintelligibly between sobs, gesturing vaguely.
“Are you… okay?”
“Noooooooo.”
“Right. Er-” Adrien frowned, clearly it wasn’t going to make sense if he asked what was wrong. He opted for distraction. “Do… you want something to eat?”
“Oh sure!” The tiny peacock’s tears cleared up immediately.
Adrien blinked at the sudden change in mood and nodded “Let’s… Let’s go get you something to eat… I guess. Er, what are you?”
"Oh I'm Duusu, a kwami, I can grant the power to hone emotions into constructs."
He tilted his head. The image of Ladybug summoning her Lucky Charm came to mind. "Like… a superhero? How?”
"Well you are transformed by a magic phrase, and once transformed, you can create a sentimonster out of vibrant emotions. Whoever holds the Amok, the item imbued with power, can control the sentimonster."
“Oh, cool!”
"It is! Do you have any mangoes? I love mango."
“We’ll see.” Adrien glanced at the peacock brooch and stuffed it into his pocket. He looked back at the door inside, then Duusu. “Actually, can you… hide? Just for now-”
“Oh yes! Don’t worry! I know the Kwami and our wielder's identities are a secret.” The kwami zipped into Adrien’s over-shirt inner pocket and settled there. It felt… almost natural. He smiled a bit to himself and went to find out if they had some good fruit for the tiny peacock.
-
The TV played in the background while Duusu had another sudden breakdown about… something. Adrien still wasn’t sure what. He was starting to feel very out of his depth.
“Duusu.... Duusu. D- Duusu, do you want to talk about it?” There was a pause before the tears flowed even harder. Adrien was reminded of a sprinkler.
His eyes were pulled to the TV, with a flash of red and black blurring on the screen. Followed by an Akuma. Ladybug and Féline Sombre. He glanced at the Kwami. “Duusu… you mentioned you can give me powers, right?”
“Mhm! You just have to say ‘Spread my feathers.’”
“Alright! Duusu-”
“OH! Wait I didn’t-”
“Spread my feathers!” The transformation felt so natural, like he was made to do this. He struck a pose and smiled behind the fan that materialized in his hand. “Alright, let’s go help Ladybug and Féline Sombre.”
He didn’t expect to start… feeling, seeing emotions. Although he supposed that made sense for the power set. They were everywhere- it was like being dropped into the deep end of a pool, surrounded and covered. Fear, worry, frustration, annoyance, determination. Stronger emotions felt… bigger, somehow. The world was full of colors and feelings he’d never expected. He lept across rooftops, feeling like he was flying. His own elation from the truest sense of freedom he’s ever had in… ever; a bright vibrant bubble. He stumbled to a stop as he spotted Ladybug.
Ladybug was determined… and scared? He didn’t expect that from Paris’s hero. She kept looking around, searching for a plan. The redhead cat hero dove in from above and smacked the Akuma with their baton. Her baton was then immediately captured and swallowed by the plants under the Akuma’s control. Féline Sombe pulled desperately before eventually giving up and vaulting towards Ladybug. She was scared too, he noticed, and frustrated.
The Akumatized person was angry. So so angry it was overwhelming. He almost couldn’t see the person behind their anger. “It’s only a matter of time before Chloé Bourgeois and the litterers of Paris pay!” The plant-covered Akuma cackled.
Chloe?! Well that’s not good. One of his only friends is in danger?
“Bonzaniac is just gonna grow bigger if they go anywhere near the Eiffel. We need to prune this plant before it’s unmanageable.” Ladybug told Féline Sombre, wrapping her yo-yo around the Akuma’s legs, straining to control Bonzaniac’s movement.
Féline Sombre gestured widely, “If I touch them I’ll just become Cat-nip! How are we supposed to stop them?”
Ladybug called her Lucky Charm, ending up with a polka dotted fishing pole. “How’s that supposed to help?”
The peacock hero frowned and… Chloé? What’s she doing here? Bonzaniac noticed her as well, it seemed, because the plant growth reached toward her. Chloé’s fear grew rapidly and immediately. He plucked a feather from the fan, imbuing it with power. He dove from his perch on the roof down towards Chloé and Bonzaniac.
“Fly away, darling amok.” The feather fluttered into Chloé’s necklace. He grabbed a traffic cone and hurled it at the plant tendrils, keeping it from touching Chloé. Féline Sombre quickly took over the idea, batting away the tendrils with a trash can lid. (That made Chloé cringe.) A purplish mask of light illuminated Chloé’s and his own face. “Chloé, I am…er- Paon Lilas. I can sense your fear. Let me help you turn it into safety. I can grant you a construct to protect you.”
“Then just do it already!” Chloé cried, “Please just don’t let it turn me into a sticky sappy gross tree!” A large golden bear materialized in front of Chloe. It roared and Chloé gasped. “Mr. Cuddles!”
Ladybug was... understandably confused. “What? Another Akuma?” She furrowed her brow and deepened her fighting stance.
“OH! No no no, uh, I’m Paon Lilas." He flourished his fan with a bow. "I’m here to help.”
Ladybug’s suspicion grew, but he didn’t have much of a chance to explain himself as Bonzaniac roared and turned on him, aiming their plant tendrils towards him. “Hey! I’m not really the roosting type of bird!” He dived for cover behind a car, patting himself down, “Come on, is the only weapon I get a fan? Why couldn’t I get a baton or something like that?”
The gold bear attacked Bonzaniac, knocking them down. Bonzaniac grappled the bear in plants, taking the plants away from protecting their back.
Ladybug gasped, "There! They only have so much plant matter! Féline, destroy as much plant matter as you can, Paon, distract Bonzaniac! I'm going Akuma fishing."
The two other heroes nodded.
"Cataclysm!" Féline Sombre yelled, summoning black destructive energy around their hand. She ducked and weaved towards the center of Bonzaniac's plant mass, jumping out of the way of grasping tendrils.
Paon Lilas whistled "Hey Bonzaniac, have you heard about Fast Fashion? I use all my outfits that way. Never worn the same shirt twice!"
The Akuma roared "All. That. WASTE!" They focused a massive amount of plant matter towards him.
"Didn't think that'd work so effectively," he muttered under his breath. He lept out of the way, and back around the bend of the car. The plants wrapped up around the car. He whooped in triamph.
Féline Sombre finally managed to hit Bonzaniac, severely reducing the amount of plants in their control. Ladybug swung the fishing pole and caught a necklace from in the middle of the thicket of plant matter. She crushed it under foot and captured the purple butterfly that fluttered out.
Mr Cuddly the sentibear sat on the Akuma victim. Paon frowned and glanced at Chloé. The gardener looked dazed and confused.
“Now who do you think you are?” Chloe said, crossing her arms.
The gardener smacked the side of the over large bear. “Wh- you! You littered in my garden! And refused to simply pick it up!”
“So what? That's not my job," Chloe huffed, crossing her arms. The sentibear huffed with her.
Paon snapped his fingers, pulling the amok from the necklace, the sentibear disappearing. Chloe gasped, pouting.
"Mademoiselle Chloe," Paon sighed softly, "How would you feel if someone threw trash into your beautiful hair and refused to help clean it up?" Chloe grabbed her hair, and Paon saw her horror at the concept. "Exactly. That garden takes just as much work, or more, as your hair. I suggest apologizing."
She pouted, "Fine, your garden was pretty or whatever, sorry I messed it up." She flicked her hair over her shoulder and rolled her eyes. "There. I apologized."
Féline Sombre and Ladybug chatted in the background. Féline grabbed their baton and with a light salute, she vaulted away.
Paon's Miraculous beeped. That... meant something right?
"Birdy!" Ladybug called, walking toward him, her own Miraculous beeping. "Where did you get that Miraculous?"
"Oh… um…. Funny story-"
"I'm sorry, but you need to give it to me. It doesn't belong to you."
"What?" Paon took a step back, "Why?"
"It's been lost. I'm going to take it back to the original owner."
Paon paled. Did Ladybug know his father? Or did his father find the lost miraculous without giving it back? Did his father know what it was? What would happen if his father found out he took it? The bubble of elated freedom popped. "That… sounds like a great, morally right thing to do… but… consider…” He took a soft step back, glancing up to find a path of escape, hands raised surrender. “I can't. Sorry, bye!" Paon ran, leaping up and away.
Ladybug moved to go after him, only for her miraculous to beep again. Sabrina had run in just in time to comfort Chloé, so Ladybug sighed and ran in the opposite direction.
Adrien tripped over himself as he detransformed in a back alley. His legs weak, and head dizzy. "Woah- is that normal?"
Duusu looked up at him with sad eyes. "I meant to tell you. The miraculous is broken... If you continue to use it... it will hurt you."
"... Does it hurt you?"
Duusu thought for a moment. "The transformation? No.... It is nice... to see another use it's power so kindly."
Adrien glanced down. He looked at the broach clipped to his overshirt. The lightness... the freedom. He nodded firmly. Unclipping it from his shirt and instead clipping it in his inside pocket. Hidden. "I'll be careful. Come on, let's get something to eat...” He rubbed his head, “I feel like we both need it."
-
Marinette just barely managed to make it to the bakery before the afternoon rush.
"Marinette! How was school?” Tom called, opening his arms for a hug. She happily took her place in her father’s arms.
"Not great.. Chloé caused another Akuma."
Tom sighed and shook his head, releasing her with a pat on the back. "At least we have Ladybug and Féline Sombre. Come on, if you can't learn in peace at school you can learn some more Dupain-Chang classics!"
Marinette chuckled and nodded, heading over to get ready to work behind the counter.
The door chimed, signaling the entrance of a young blond. She stared at him. He seemed oddly familiar. She started picturing him against all the blonds she knew, although her brain was still somewhat stuck on the Peacock Miraculous holder…. She really needed to talk to Master Fu about that.
The boy stumbled. He was just about to faceplant into the counter before Marinette, intending to catch him- shoved him. He fell on his rear instead.
“OH, I’m so sorry! Are you okay?” Marinette cried, moving to pull him up to his feet. He was surprisingly light, ohmy and now she just manhandled him like a human doll.
“It’s okay! You saved me from what was probably a worse fate.” He giggled awkwardly, "Thanks... I’ve been.. a bit dizzy today, I guess."
"Oh, I hope you feel better, anything I can do to help?"
"Heh, I was looking for food. Got some, er, fruity stuff?"
"Fruity, fruit. For sure, fruit." Marinette stared at him a bit longer. Finally the images and fashion magazine clippings clicked next to the boy’s face. She gasped "Adrien Agreste! You're Gabriel Agreste's son! He’s my favorite fashion designer!"
He laughed awkwardly. Rubbing the back of his head. "Yeah… That’s… that’s me."
"You probably hear that all the time, sorry! But! Fruit." She walked over to the counter and gestured at the prepared goods. "Macaroons are always good, and there's some a couple of fruit Eclairs, brioche and jam-"
He smiled somewhat stiffly, before frowning at the eclairs. He made a subtle 'come here' gesture. Marinette looked down at the eclairs herself, unsure what exactly made him frown.
He sighed, adjusting his overshirt. (Duusu settled nicely into the pocket again, glad to have been able to choose his treat.) "I think one of those is good.... Er... actually, I think two."
He handed her the money, and she handed him the pastries. "Thank you."
She smiled, "Thank you! Come again soon. Just try not to trip, that's usually my thing."
He laughed. "Actually…” He takes a bite of his eclair, with a smile “I think I will definetly try to come in again."
"Oh! Okay, cool!"
He waved and walked out of the establishment with a small smile.
Tom leaned over as she watched him leave. "Flirting with the customers?"
Marinette gasped dramatically, "NoOo dad no. He's... just a friend."
Adrien leaned against a wall and sighed. Duusu floated up into view, taking a section of eclair. "Ah young love..."
He shook his head, "...She's just a friend..." He gasped, glancing back at the bakery with a smile, "A friend."
-
Marinette frowned, "Wait, Master Fu, do you think he could be working with Hawkmoth?"
"It is a possibility. I wouldn’t be surprised if the butterfly and the peacock had been nearby each other. If you can find out where he found it, it may help us find Hawkmoth.”
“Hm, he didn’t seem like he was with Hawkmoth. He was helpful... And he actually got Chloé to apologize?”  She was still bewildered about that. It wasn’t the best apology ever, but she still actually did it.
“The peacock wields the power of emotion, Peon Lilas will be able to sense emotion. He can very easily use that information to manipulate others into doing things for him. Even something as simple as an apology.”
She frowned, considering, “I think I understand.”
“Be careful, the peacock is not to be underestimated. Make sure you and Féline Sombre are prepared for what he might do next."
She nodded firmly. "I will be.”
-
Gabriel Agreste stared at the paused frame from the newscast on his newest enemy. Emile's painting ajar and missing a vital item. "Natalie... Where is the surveillance footage for this room?"
She silently pulled up the footage, scrolling through to find an umbrella blocking their view of their thief.
Gabriel growled under his breath and stood up. "Time to catch a runaway bird, it seems. See what you can find from the rest of the cameras in and out of the building. If there's anything or anyone out of place, you tell me immediately."
"What will you do sir?" Natalie asked, already scanning through footage on her tablet.
"Someone found and stole the peacock miraculous from right under our noses. I need to find a way to protect my identity and a lure for our heroic peafoul.”

Chapter 2: There’s Always a First
Chloé! A true wielder! This is it. The end. By the time the information soaked into my brain, I’ve arrived at Ms. Bustier’s classroom.“Marinette! You can sit in the righthand second row; right next to the new girl!”
“Yes Ms. Bustier.” At least I’m not next to Chloé this– A hand grabs my wrist startling me out of my thoughts.
“Hi! My name is Alya, the new girl. I can see it! We’re gonna be besties!” This could be good.
“I’m Marinette. Please say something before you touch me next time though, I’m blind.” I smile towards her.
“Sure thing, girl. I should’ve known, I see your cane now.” Alya responds a bit sheepishly.
I pull out my braille note taker and refocus my attention to Ms. Bustier’s lesson.
“Ivan! Principle. Now!” Ms. Bustier exclaims.
“But Mis–”
 “I don’t want to hear it Ivan.” Something feels wrong.
“Ooh! What a pretty feather!” Rose’s sweet voice announces. As I hear everyone turn in their chairs along with a few small gasps, Ivan agrees with something, “Yes, Paeon.” Everyone screams.
Chaos. Utter chaos.
“KIIIIIIMMMMM!” a loud thing cries with a voice that reminds me of grinding gravel. Everyone runs away. Except Alya who pulls me after the voice saying something about superheroes an supervillans. I managed to get free by the enterance of the school; and, with the assistance of Nooroo and my cane, made it home without any trouble.
I dash upstairs and lock my trapdoor so I can talk to Nooroo.“It’s usually called a sentenal but, since the peacock miraculous holder is a villain, we call it an amok.” Nooroo informs me helpfully.
“I need to get to the greenhouse. Nooro? Will you help me get there without dying?”
“Of course Ms. Marinette.” Nooro chirps and re-enters my pigtail.We make good time on our journey and Nooroo barely has to make any redirections.
Arriving at the greenhouse, I quickly shut the door behind me.“Nooroo. Wings rise!” I shout.
A warm feeling spreads over me, starting at my fingertips then flowing to my shoulders and cascading to the floor. A delicate feeling mask materializes over my eyes presumably to hide my identity from the world.a metal septre has replaced my cane. On instinct I sit down. Behind me was what feels like a metal throne stylized after vines. Probably because I’m in a greenhouse. I run my hands over what feels like an evening gown and am pleased with the silky texture. There are purls clinging to the bottom of the skirt that thin out around mid thigh. The top goes all the way up to around my voicebox and is covered in fabric butterflies trailing down over my collarbone and to my waist. My shoulders are bare but i have gloves embroidered with more butterflies that trail up to my elbows. My shoes are simple heels. Thank goodness.
I finally take notice of the new sounds. Wings! Hundreds of them! I reach out my hand and six tiny legs land on my glove. So I can feel through these. With a kiss, I send out my butterfly to find a champion.
As the butterfly leaves my little sanctuary, all the strong emotions in paris flood into my head and I mentally separate those with the drive that I can transform.
First I sense curiosity and adventure with an unhelthilly low amount of fear, Alya. maybe some other time. I need someone protective, the monster has a hostage now. Freedom, chaos, and protectiveness! This is just what I need. Wait. They already have a miraculous. The black cat i presume. Finally! Another protector, but also guilt and panic. I urge the butterfly to land on the item clutched in his hand and the mind link is formed.
“Ivan Bruel, you strive to protect your love who is taken by the amok.”
“YES! Yes…. but who are you? Are you in my head? Are you like Paeon?!” Ivan responds quickly.
“I am Lady Papillon, we are connected through my power. I am not with Paeon however; I can gift you with the power to save Mylené and Paris, should you accept.”
“You’re not with Paeon?”
“No,” I reassure him, “I cannot lie with this bond, neither can he, but unlike Paeon I do not twist my words.”
“Alright, My Lady, I accept.”
Lavender bubbles cover Ivan leaving behind an eight-foot tall knight made entirely of metal. He wilds a six foot war hammer that sends out a shock wave when hit against his shield.“What would you like to call yourself?’” I ask.
“Call me Iron Heart.” Ivan smirks.
“Allright, Iron Heart, they are headed to the stadium, there should be a hero waiting for you there. They will be dressed like a cat.” Iron Heart nodds and takes off at a sprint.
Looking through Iron Heart’s eyes, I notice a boy pole vaulting across the rooftops toward the stadium. He wears a colored suit, I assume it is black, with clip-on cat ears and a belt tail that moves of it’s own accord.
“Iron Heart! Your hero is over there!”
“HERO!! What do you call yourself?!”
“Who’s asking?” he looks defensive.
“I am Iron Heart, champion of Lady Papillon the hero of the butterfly miraculous. She gave me power to protect my love from the amok.”
“Is Lady Papillon the partner my friend told me about?” the cat asks.
“She says ‘she is’” The feline looks at Iron Heart suspiciously.
“Chat Noir.” Was the simple response before he took of in the direction of the amok.
Looking ahead through my champion’s eyes, it was clear that the amok was causing as much damage as possible while searching for its prey, (also known as Kim).  Despite its erratic search pattern, the monster seemed to be moving steadily in the direction of the stadium; most likely due to Kim’s love of sports and dares. Apon arriving at the stadium, the amok, not finding its prey, sent a shockwave into the air in rage. I could feel it, even all the way from my greenhouse.
“Ironheart.” Lady Papillion stated, noticing the amok kept one of his fists closed the entire chase, “The amok must be in his right fist! You must tell Chat Noir!” When she heard Ironheart relay her message, she started brainstorming how to destroy the amok without harming Myléne. Looking around the stadium, Lady Papillion took notice of a few items: a rack of soccerballs, the goal, and a bunch of plastic tiles on the sidelines. She focused on forming a plan. A-ha! “Ironheart, notify chat noir to be ready to cataclysm the amok. You must start throwing the plastic tiles and soccerballs to distract it; then when you throw the goalpost it will be caught off-guard and catch it so Chat Noir can cataclysm the amok and you can catch Myléne.”
Her plan worked perfectly. “Ironheart, let Chat Noir know that after he recharges I will speak with him at the Eiffel Tower.” She said.
“Of course My Lady!” Ironheart stated with a playful bow before relaying her message to Chat Noir who agreed to meet her in twenty minutes.

Chapter 20: my tears ricochet
“Is everything okay, Marinette?” Tikki poked her head out of Marinette’s shirt collar.
The subway station was quiet save for a few other waiting passengers, too absorbed in their phones to notice the girl talking to her small magical friend. Marinette took a deep breath and nodded.
“Yeah,” she said, “I just can’t believe it’s finally over.”
“Don’t you think it’s wrong to seek revenge? What if Lila gets akumatized again because Ladybug exposed her?” Tikki asked with a worried frown.
“Normally, I’d say yes, but it’s about time someone set the record straight,” Marinette said as the subway car pulled up. “Look, I won’t talk about it ever again as Ladybug or Marinette. It’s over now. We’ll just stay on the lookout for the next few days.”
Tikki sank back into Marinette’s shirt without another word, though her frown persisted. Taking a seat on the train, Marinette leaned her head back with a sigh. It had been nearly a month since Marinette changed schools, and she’d done her best to put the past behind her. From the moment she left, she didn’t want anything to do with Lila, but it was too late to take back the interview now. The truth was finally out there, and it was unlikely that Lila would be able to lie her way out of this one. Everyone was free.
When the train arrived at her stop, Marinette followed the crowd of people and pushed the whole ordeal from her mind. What was done was done, and Lila had no power over her anymore. Marinette had often wondered what this day would feel like. Truthfully, it wasn’t as relieving as she thought it would be. Maybe removing herself from the situation lessened the impact, but Marinette felt nothing but apathy. A small part of her was glad to be done with it, but the majority of her just didn’t care about Lila anymore. She’d made new friends, and she was in the process of making one more.
Gabrielle averted her gaze when Marinette entered the café, just like she always did. Marinette had programmed Gabrielle’s work schedule into her calendar, and she’d been making it a point to stop by when she could. Although Gabrielle tried to hide it, Marinette could tell that she was happy to see her.
“Does this count as harassment?” Gabrielle asked, setting Marinette’s usual order on the table.
“Only if you want me to stop,” Marinette said.
Gabrielle rolled her eyes and smiled. “You’re such a dork. No wonder I used to pick on you.”
“That’s not a no,” Marinette said pointedly.
“You’re so annoying,” Gabrielle sighed, stalking back to the counter.
Marinette bit back a smile, retrieving her sketchbook from her bag while Gabrielle tended to other customers. The café was cozy and secluded enough that Marinette could work freely while also keeping an eye on Gabrielle. Her deadline was only a few days away, and she’d already taken time out to help Adrien.
Adrien…
He went behind her back to stop Lila. She’d been so touched in the moment, that she agreed to help without really thinking. But he’d gone against everything he believed in for her. Not Ladybug, not Chloe, not even his best friend. For Marinette. How could she resist? The moment Adrien said he needed Ladybug, she couldn’t help herself. It was selfish, but if he called, she’d always come running. And as it turned out, Adrien was quietly doing the same for her all along. It was kind of romantic in a way.
But what did that make them? Were they dating? Neither one of them had confessed their true feelings, but it was obvious they both really cared for one another. Adrien wouldn’t have teamed up with Chloe if he didn’t feel something for Marinette. Being mean wasn’t in Adrien’s nature—it was one of the many things she loved about him. He had to be in love with her now. There was no other explanation.
Marinette pressed her lips together, tracing hearts along the edges of her sketch. She would tell Adrien how she felt after her presentation with Clara. No chickening out this time. Just her honest feelings and hopefully Adrien’s soft lips and silky golden hair, the intoxicating scent of his cologne, and those strong arms wrapping around her-
“What’s that for?” Gabrielle snapped Marinette from her trance, replacing the cold cup Marinette had long forgotten about with a fresh one.
“Oh, uh, just some designs I’ve been playing with,” Marinette said. “Actually, will you tell me what you think?”
Gabrielle quirked a brow, spinning the sketchbook around to get a better look while Marinette sipped her coffee. She’d narrowed it down to three sketches, and Gabrielle studied them thoughtfully.
“I think the skirt on this one could puff out more, and I think this one would look better if you made it slouch off the shoulder,” Gabrielle said, “but that’s just my opinion.”
“No, that’s really helpful. Thank you.” Marinette smiled.
Gabrielle shifted her weight and mumbled, “Your designs are really good.”
Marinette beamed, but before she could reply, a loud boom shook the café, knocking over cabinets and cups. Gabrielle and Marinette rushed outside to find the source as several passing people ran away from the scene.
“Lila,” Marinette murmured under her breath.
“What?” Gabrielle turned to her.
“I said it must be an akuma,” she said quickly. “We should probably evacuate.”
“As if my boss will let me leave. This place could burn down, and he’d still expect me to show up and sweep the ashes.” Gabrielle rolled her eyes. “You go.”
Another crash rattled the street, shattering the windows of every parked car along the block. Marinette shielded her face from the debris, Gabrielle taking a defensive stance in front of her. Locking eyes with the villain, Marinette’s blood ran cold.
Lila hadn’t been the one to get akumatized, but the girl staring back at her was all too familiar. Her suit was red and black with spots resembling Ladybug’s on the bodice. Long red hair was tied back into a ponytail, once hazel eyes now scarlet. Her ex-best friend looked at her with utter disdain.
“You…” Her eyes narrowed.
“Alya?” Marinette gasped.
“You two know each other?” Gabrielle quirked a brow.
“She and I used to be…” Marinette lowered her gaze.
“Used to be what, Marinette? Bffs?” The akuma snarled. “Or maybe you’d like to forget that!”
With a swipe of her phone, a purple beam shot toward them. Gabrielle tackled Marinette to the ground, avoiding the blast by an inch. Gabrielle’s manager came out to see what the fuss was about, and the beam engulfed him. He blinked a few times, looking around at the café in confusion.
“Where am I? Better yet, who am I?” he groaned.
Gabrielle pushed Marinette away, eyes wide. “Run!”
“What about yo-”
“Just go!” Gabrielle shouted.
“Oh, she’s not going anywhere.” The akuma swiped her phone screen again, pointing it up to the sky. Storm clouds materialized, and large chunks of hail rained down. “I’m not your bff anymore, Marinette. My name is Ladyblogger, and I can use any power I want! I’m going to expose the truth to everyone once and for all!”
Gabrielle grabbed the coffee pot from her manager and hurled it at Ladyblogger. She took Marinette’s hand, and the two raced up the street.
“This way!” Gabrielle ducked into an alley. She lead Marinette through a private courtyard, down another side street, and across to another alley before stopping. “Take this street, and you should be able to make it home from there.”
“Where will you go?” Marinette asked.
“I should get back to the café. I doubt my manager’s amnesia will last long. You should get somewhere safe.” She shoved Marinette on, heading back in the direction they came.
“Gabrielle?” Marinette called, and she turned over her shoulder. “Thanks. You saved me.”
“Yeah, yeah, don’t mention it.” Gabrielle rolled her eyes. “Now go!”
Marinette bit back a smile as she raced up the alley. Her suit materialized before she made it to the other end, and she tossed her yoyo into the rooftops. Any warmth she’d felt from Gabrielle’s selflessness faded the moment Ladybug touched down on the scene. Chat Noir arrived at the same time she did.
“Looks like the ‘heroes’ decided to show up,” Ladyblogger said with air quotes. “Or should I even call you that anymore? The only people you seem to protect these days are ones with egos the size of monuments!”
“Alya, listen to me! Lila is manipulating you,” Ladybug said.
“You’re one to talk about manipulation. How’s your bff Chloe these days? Or is it actually Marinette?” Ladyblogger shot another beam from her phone, but Chat Noir and Ladybug dodged. The attack hit Gabrielle’s manager again, snapping out of his confusion only to be transformed into a Ladyblogger look alike.
“Wow, for a journalist, you seem to have a hard time swallowing the truth,” Chat Noir said.
Ladyblogger swiped blasts from her screen, and Ladybug and Chat Noir dodged between them, charging in to strike. Chat Noir’s staff phased through Ladyblogger, and he stumbled several paces before regaining his balance. She smirked at him, lifting her finger from the screen and regaining tangibility just in time for Ladybug to land a hit.
The two grappled, dodging each other’s swipes and jabs. Ladyblogger phased in and out of tangibility, striking Ladybug with purposeful blows. When Ladybug finally landed a hit, Ladyblogger simply smiled. Her aura glowed, and she took Ladybug’s wrist, tossing her effortlessly into her partner across the street.
They rolled across the pavement, limbs tangling around each other. Chat Noir immediately helped her to her feet, dusting himself off. “Okay, is it just me, or are her powers super random?”
“I don’t think they are,” Ladybug said. “She’s using abilities we’ve fought before. I think she’s using powers from old akumas.”
“Not just akumas.” Ladyblogger corrected, tapping her screen. “Cataclysm!”
She charged at them, fist glowing with black energy. Ladybug and Chat Noir jumped out of the way, and Ladyblogger swiped the streetlamp, reducing it to a pile of ash.
“Okay, so you can copy our powers too,” Chat Noir said.
Ladybug’s eyes narrowed on Ladyblogger’s screen, an inverted version of her blog theme with icons for each power available to her. “Her blog!” she gasped. “She can use powers of anyone—hero or villain—that she’s reported about on her blog!”
“You always were a smart one,” Ladyblogger said. “So, how come you can’t see through all of the lies people keep feeding you?”
“She’s not the one that needs to open her eyes.” Chat Noir shot back.
Ladyblogger summoned another Cataclysm, punching the ground and sending a shockwave rippling up the street. Ladybug and Chat Noir jumped up to the roof to avoid it.
“Got a plan?” Chat Noir asked.
“Lucky Charm!” Ladybug summoned, and a deck of playing cards materialized.
“Up for a riveting game of poker? We can wager our Miraculouses for her akuma,” Chat smarmed.
“No…” Ladybug studied the logo on the box. “I have to go. Maybe you can annoy her to death with your jokes before I get back.”
“Purrhaps she’ll be a better sport than you.” Chat Noir winked. “Just don’t keep me waiting too long. Even this cat will run out of jokes eventually.”
Ladybug flicked his bell before racing off. Ladyblogger could mimic the power of anyone so long as she’d written about them on her blog, so Ladybug needed a power she hadn’t seen before.
“Master!” Marinette burst through the door. “Chat Noir and I are fighting an akuma, and I need to borrow a Miraculous.”
Master Fu set aside his book. “Then let’s not waste any time.”
He retrieved the Miracle Box from its hiding place and presented it to her. Marinette surveyed her options carefully. The mouse could work, but she wasn’t sure it was the one they needed. Then there was the monkey, but that could confuse things even more. She needed something stealthy. Something like…
“Do you have someone in mind?” Master Fu asked as she grabbed the tiger gauntlet.
“I think I just might.”
♪♫♪ Bad Blood ♪♫♪
Ladybug found Gabrielle sweeping broken glass outside the café. The street was quiet and long since evacuated. Chat Noir and Ladyblogger relocated to the Trocadero, but Gabrielle stayed behind, waiting for everything to go back to normal. She quirked a brow when Ladybug approached.
“I’m going to assume since I’m still here sweeping glass that you haven’t defeated the akuma?” she asked.
“Not yet.” Ladybug admitted. “I need a little help. Think you’re up for it?”
“Why do you need my help? Don’t you have a passel of super-freaks on speed dial?” Gabrielle grunted, returning to her sweeping.
“I do, but… how would you like to be one of them?” Ladybug offered, and Gabrielle froze.
“For real?” she asked, eyes glinting with intrigue that extinguished just as quickly as it lit. “Why me?”
“Didn’t you watch my interview earlier?” Ladybug cocked a hip. “I’m always looking for new partners, and I saw how you helped your friend earlier.”
“We’re not really friends,” Gabrielle said, but when Ladybug gave her a disbelieving smirk, she sighed. “Okay, fine. She’s annoying, but whatever, I guess she’s my friend. I just don’t see how that has anything to do with me becoming a superhero. You obviously don’t know me very well, but let’s just say I’m not exactly the hero type.”
“Don’t you want to be?” Ladybug asked, and when Gabrielle averted her gaze, she added, “Look, I didn’t think I was superhero material at first either, but being Ladybug helped me realize I’m more capable than I think. You have an opportunity to do something good. Isn’t that what you want?”
Gabrielle lowered her gaze, tapping her nails against the wooden handle. Pressing her lips together, she squared her shoulders and let the broom fall to the ground.
“Gabrielle Burton, this is the Miraculous of the Tiger, which grants you the power of invisibility. You will use it to fight for the greater good.” Ladybug recited, presenting her with a small box. “Once the battle is over, you will return it to me. Can I trust you?”
“Yeah, I guess.” Gabrielle rolled her eyes and took the box, barely flinching when Roarr manifested.
“Hello there! My name is Roarr, and I’m a-”
“We don’t have time for that. My job doesn’t pay me enough to fight supervillains, so let’s just get this over with.” Gabrielle cut him off. “Now, how does this thing work?”
Ladybug flashed him an apologetic grin, and he flicked his tail. “To transform, all you have to do is say ‘Roarr, transform me,’” he said without any fanfare.
“Cool.” Gabrielle slipped on the gauntlet. “Roarr, transform me!”
Gabrielle caught on quick, following behind Ladybug without need for explanation. If Marinette had learned anything about Gabrielle, it was that she was straightforward and to the point. It shouldn’t have come as a surprise that she was guarded around Ladybug. Marinette was still breaking through some of those walls herself, but she truly believed that Gabrielle could be a good hero if she tried.
When they arrived at the Trocadero, Gabrielle cracked her whip before Ladyblogger could ready another attack. Seeing Ladybug with a new ally must have struck a nerve because Ladyblogger let out a frustrated growl. Chat Noir rushed in but slammed into an invisible wall. Ladyblogger tugged an invisible cell door shut with a smile, but Gabrielle didn’t leave her much time to gloat.
“Who’s the new pet?” Ladyblogger called. She and Gabrielle sparred while Ladybug checked on Chat Noir.
“Obviously, someone she trusts more than you.” Gabrielle retorted. They locked hands, glaring each other down.
“It seems that Ladybug is employing a lot of mean girls, these days. Falling on hard times?” Ladyblogger grunted, hiking a leg to knee Gabrielle in the gut. “You must really be scraping the bottom of the barrel. Looks like your little tigress needs some more training.”
Ladyblogger struck again, but Gabrielle caught her wrist, redirecting her down the stairs. As Ladyblogger stumbled to the bottom, Gabrielle cocked a hip.
“Tigress, I kind of like that. I think I’ll keep it,” she said.
Ladyblogger scrambled to her feet as Ladybug and Chat Noir flanked Tigress. Her attention turned to the news station helicopter hovering over the Trocadero to catch all of the action.
“Let’s see if the rookie is really up to snuff,” Ladyblogger said, tapping her screen again. “Venom!”
“No!” Ladybug shouted.
Ladyblogger jumped, clearing the distance to the helicopter easily. With a light tap, the pilot froze in place, and Ladyblogger hopped out the other side as the plane spiraled into a tailspin.
“Chat Noir, Tigress, get everyone out!” Ladybug ordered.
Her partners sprang into action while Ladybug hooked her yoyo around the streetlamps. Tigress took care of Nadja while Chat Noir carried the pilot and cameraman. They got out just as the helicopter landed in Ladybug’s net. Her feet skidded against the concrete, bearing the weight of the aircraft as she gently lowered it to the ground.
“Hey, Bugheads! Ladyblogger here, and do I have the scoop for you!” A large camera broadcast their efforts to every screen in Paris, and Ladyblogger watched in amusement. “Always playing the hero, but only for those she deems worthy of saving. Hasn’t anyone ever wondered if the girl under the mask is really as nice as we all think?”
“Thanks, Ladybug,” Nadja said as Tigress set her down.
“Get somewhere safe,” Ladybug ordered.
The pilot groaned and rubbed his head, free from Venom’s sting. Ladybug eyed him with a pensive frown as the reporting crew scrambled to safety.
“Any ideas?” Chat Noir asked.
“Forming one,” Ladybug replied. “It looks like she can only use one power at a time, so when she switches to a new one, the effects of the old one wear off—like closing an app on a phone.”
“Okay, so what does that mean for us?” Tigress crossed her arms over her chest.
“It means we have to keep her moving,” Ladybug said, palming her yoyo. “Lucky charm!”
A catcher’s mitt landed in her hands, and Chat Noir quirked a brow.
“Great, so we can invite her to play catch,” he said.
Ladybug glanced around singling in on Tigress, Chat Noir’s staff, and her glove. A smile broke over her lips. “That’s exactly what we’re going to do, but we’re going to do it my way. Chat Noir, you and I are going to keep Ladyblogger busy while Tigress sneaks in.”
Chat Noir nodded without a second thought, but Tigress shot Ladybug a skeptical look. “Are you sure this is gonna work?”
“This isn’t even her most convoluted plan.” Chat Noir shrugged.
“And now the superheroine has summoned her last resort. I think it’s time everyone learned the truth about Paris’s savior. Coming up next, we’re going to take her Miraculous and find out what kind of person is hiding behind the mask! Stay connected, Bugheads.” Ladyblogger ended her broadcast and swiped to a new power. “Let’s see which one of us has more luck, Ladybug. Lucky Charm!”
Ladyblogger caught the rocket launcher with a sinister laugh, taking aim at the band of heroes. When she pulled the trigger, they dispersed, splitting up in three different directions.
“Camouflage!” Tigress whispered.
Ladybug and Chat Noir wasted no time drawing Ladyblogger’s attention, dodging past missiles as they closed in. They took turns taking jabs and kicks, and with closer proximity, Ladyblogger abandoned her weapon in favor of a different power. Light beams shot from her screen with each swipe of her fingers, transforming streetlamps and benches into hard black lumps.
“Coal? But I’ve been so good this year!” Chat Noir taunted.
“I used to think you two were so great, but now I see you for who you really are! You’re not heroes, you’re just two little kids playing dress-up for attention,” Ladyblogger said.
“You know what? You’re right,” Ladybug said. “Just keep all of your attention on us.”
“It shouldn’t be hard. I am pretty good-looking.” Chat Noir flexed his biceps.
Ladyblogger’s eyes narrowed, but before she could make her next move, her arms pinned to her sides. An invisible force wrestled her to the ground, kicking her phone from her grasp in a direct pitch to Chat Noir.
Tigress materialized on top of her, pulling her whip tight. “Looks like Hawkmoth should have trained you a little more,” she said.
“Batter up!” Chat Noir called, swinging his baton.
Ladybug caught the phone in her mitt easily and stomped it under her foot, releasing the black butterfly from inside.
“No more evil-doing for you, little akuma. Looks like she struck out.”
Tigress stood up as Ladybug’s magic healed the city. When Alya came to, Ladybug crouched beside her, presenting her repaired phone.
“I know you’re hurt and confused, but I promise that everything I said earlier is true,” Ladybug said. “You’re a smart girl, Alya. The truth is right in front of you if you look for it.”
Alya searched her expression, lips pressing into a firm line. “Why should I believe you?”
“Seriously? After everything Ladybug has done for this city, you’re going to blow her off just like that? Some journalist you are,” Tigress grunted, flipping her braid over one shoulder.
“Tigress-”
Alya’s jaw clenched. She snatched her phone from Ladybug’s grasp and stood up. “So these are the kind of people you replace real heroes with? I thought one drama queen was a coincidence, but I’m starting to think you just have a type,” she said. “You’re right. I am smart—smart enough to see when someone isn’t who they say they are. So from now on, I’m no longer your fan, Ladybug, and I’m going to expose the truth to everyone!”
Tigress averted her gaze as Alya stormed off. “Sorry, I shouldn’t have said that.”
“It’s okay,” Ladybug said. Her heart sank watching Alya walk away from her for the second time. “She already made up her mind.”
♪♫♪ Far From Heaven ♪♫♪
“You okay, Al?”
Alya peeked at her boyfriend over the pillow she was hugging to her face, tears streaking her cheeks. Nino sat on the bed beside her, pulling her into his arms. Alya nestled into his neck and allowed his warmth to thaw the cold ache in her chest.
“I saw your blog post. Are you really done with Ladybug?” Nino asked.
Alya flicked her gaze to her phone resting on the bed, her latest post on the Ladyblog displayed on the screen. She might have gone too far with it, but she didn’t care. Ladybug wasn’t who Alya thought, and the world needed to know that their beloved heroine wasn’t so loving.
“After everything I’ve done for her, all the time I spent proving to her how trustworthy I was, and she just replaced me without even saying anything. Then she’s out there being best buddies with Chloe?” Alya’s voice cracked. “How could she do that?”
Nino pursed his lips, and Alya leaned her cheek against his chest, breathing him in. She didn’t blame him for not having an answer because neither did she. In only a few weeks, her entire world had been flipped on its head. Losing Marinette had hurt enough, but now she couldn’t even believe in the people she revered most. Were all superheroes just pretending to be nice? Or did they all have a Chloe Bourgeois behind the scenes pulling the strings? And what was Marinette’s role in all of this? Was all of it really her fault? Alya didn’t know what to believe now.
“Maybe you should take some time away from your blog. I think it might be good to put some distance between you for a while.” Nino suggested, kissing her temple. “At least while you’re hurting, I don’t think it’s healthy for you to be around all that. Take some time to clear your head.”
“Yeah, I guess you’re right…” Alya picked up her phone, thumb lingering over the home button, but she couldn’t bring herself to press it.
Nino was right. Her obsession with heroes wasn’t healthy. How many times had she put herself in danger capturing footage for her blog, and for what? Ladybug clearly didn’t care, so why should Alya? A break wasn’t what she needed. If she came back, it would just be more of the same. What Alya truly needed was to walk away. To shut the door and never look back. Maybe then she could find something worth believing in.
“Al?”
Alya bit her lip, thoughts racing. Before she could change her mind, she hit delete, erasing months of hard work in an instant. Countless late nights, dangerous battles collecting footage, all of her hopes and dreams and theories gone at the touch of a button. Ladybug didn’t trust her anymore, and now the feeling was mutual.

“Adrien I can't go down for breakfast,” Marinette hides under the blankets.
“Yes you can,” Adrien gives up tugging on the blankets and jumps on top of her.
“But Damian-” Marinette groans partly at his weight on top of her.
“Has no idea your Ladybug and moreover doesn't know your soulmate is Robin, and it doesn't mean you can’t like him so get up and come to breakfast,”
“Stop being reasonable and helpful,” Marinette pushes him off, getting up herself.
“I’ll try my best, now come on let's go,” Marinette sulks as she follows him downstairs, basically having to be pushed into the dining room.
“Is something wrong Marinette?” Dick asks, by now Marinette has labeled him the only one in the family not in denial that feelings exist.
“She’s just tired,” Adrien says for her when she can’t bring herself to answer, still sulking as she takes a seat, “Say I was looking around, why is there an entire circus set up in the gym?”
“Oh, I used to be an acrobat,” That interesting little revelation is cut short by an all too familiar feeling.
“Really? That's so-”
“Hey, Adrien I just remembered the thing we had to do today,”
“The thing?” Marinette gives him a sharp look and his face lights up with realization, “Oh right! The thing, can’t go forgetting the thing, bye!”
 ---
 “Sooo that was suspicious,” Dick muses as the two practically sprint out of the room.
“Put your masks on, we’re following them,” Bruce orders, they haven’t yet forgotten she’s the daughter of an assassin.
They head down the cave to gear up, following the tracking device on Marinette’s bike. However, when they reach it the bike is unattended and the two aren’t anywhere in sight. They hear a commotion nearby moving to check it out.
“It’s another Akuma attack,” Dick reports Ladybug and Chat Noir already on the scene.
“Oh my god,” Tim gasps, “Marinette's Hawkmoth!”
“Hawkmoths a man,” Red Hood deadpans, they would just ignore it if Tim’s sleep-deprived revelations weren’t right more often than not.
“Fine then she’s Mayura,” Tim waves them off, “Adrien’s hawkmoth,”
“What are you talking about?” Robin snaps, watching the battle below, anyone the Akuma hit’s disappearing.
“They leave and then there's an Akuma attack, they showed up just as Ladybug and Chat Noir did to stop Hawkmoth,” Tim rambles, “It’s all highly suspicious,”
“I’ve looked through the files, neither have been akumatized,” Batman adds, evidence stacking, “And their class was an Akuma hot spot,”
“Oh my god,” Dicks realization mirrors Tim’s, “Marinette's hawkmoth,”
“Again, Marinette would be Mayura,” Tim corrects.
“We need to tell Ladybug about this,” Robin decides dropping down onto the street.
“Hey, Robin here to help? Could you go around their left it’s a blind spot and we need to grab- are you listening?” Ladybug turns to him, simultaneously deflecting a blast lucky charm in one hand.
“Ladybug there's something I need to tell you,” Robin hesitates Marinette truly didn’t seem like the type but Ladybug has been fighting Hawkmoth for years if there's even a slight chance Marinette is Hawkmoth Ladybug has to know.
“If this is about yesterday now’s not really the time,” Ladybug says with a cold fed up tone that honestly takes Damian off guard, “It didn’t mean anything,”
“It’s no- what do you mean didn’t mean anything,” Robin gets sidetracked from his point, dodging a blast getting further from Ladybug.
“Soul mates they aren’t romantic or even involved so it doesn't mean anything,” She dodges another blast, Chat Noir getting thrown around somewhere, “I really need you to go around their left,”
“But they are real,” Damian clings to that fact and stays by her side. “And you are my soul mate,”
“Well yes but-”
“Ladybug!” Chat calls, tangled up in washing lines with the Akuma advancing.
“In a minute!” She shouts, fully turning towards Robin now.
“Ok I’ll just hang out then,” Chat swings gently in the wind.
“Really the only way a soul mate affects you is if they die,” Damian's stomach churns, “And still even when that happens the effects are minimal if there is little connection, so we should probably just leave each other alone,”
Robin is frozen as Ladybug moves too late to save Chat from the blast, when the light is gone he has disappeared.
“What are you- I’m not going to just ignore this!” He snaps, Ladybug comes back glaring at him.
“Well I am, I have worked too long and too hard trying to beat Hawkmoth to risk it all for someone I don’t even know wearing a mask,” Ladybug is glowering at him, glowing red eyes brutally honest and true, “I’ve put everything else in my life aside to defeat Hawkmoth, don't think I have a problem putting you aside too,”
“You can’t just- I know who Hawkmoth is!” Robin shouts as she goes to leave, sure she won't come back to him if she leaves.
“What?!” It’s then the rest of his family come to join them, Nightwing pulling Ladybug out of the way of another blast, “Who?!”
“Marinette Dupain-cheng,”
“WHAT?!”
“Again Marinette would be-” Tim doesn't get to finish as they all get hit by a blast.
Light envelopes them all, there is no pain which is either a good sign or a very bad sign. When Robin opens his eyes they are all standing in a stark white container of sorts. Chat Noir is there giving him a wave as they all regain their bearings.
“Why? Why would you think Marinette is Hawkmoth?” Ladybug asks, Chat Noir bursts out laughing for some reason.
“Actually we think she’s Mayura,” Tim supplies, “Adrien Agreste is Hawkmoth,”
“What?!” Chat Noir stands up, enough room for them all to face each other.
“Marinette isn’t Hawkmoth,” Ladybug pinches the bridge of her nose still holding a lucky charm going to waste.
“She’s- I give up,” Tim throws his hands up turning towards the wall in search of a way to get out.
“How do you know!?” Damian snaps, anger and betrayal still clawing at his insides.
“I just do!” Ladybug yells back volume increasing, Chat Noir tries to get her attention but no one is getting through to either of them.
“You trust her more than me?” Damian isn’t sure why he says it, just that he’s angry enough he doesn't care.
“Uh yeah, substantially more,” Ladybug crosses her arms a smug smile on her face, Robin bristles ready to change that.
“She ran away to Gotham as Hawkmoth arrived, she’s never been akumatized even after her class was specifically targeted! Shes the daughter of an infamous assassin!” Robins practically screaming at this point, everyone giving them as much space as possible, “How can she not be Hawkmoth!”
“She’s just not!” Ladybugs earrings beep, Chat now desperately trying to get her attention.
“If she’s not Hawkmoth that means-” Damian cuts himself off reframing all the evidence, conversations rushing back to him all at once, “Marinette?”
“No,” The earring beeps for the last time, transformation falling to reveal Marinette, “Wow great timing Tikki,”
“I’m sorry,” A little red bug thing lands in Marinette's open hands, the lucky charm is gone now.
“Don't be, more importantly,” Marinette turns to Damian glaring something fierce, “How do you know who I am?”
“You’re… Ladybug?” Robin says quietly still trying to process… everything.
“Does that mean Chat Noir’s Adrien?” Dick interrupts.
Damian's still playing catch up. Marinette's Ladybug and Ladybug is Marinette. Ladybug who protects Gotham. Marinette who left her family to be Ladybug. Ladybug who he had been talking to every night. Marinette who he spent every day with.
“How do you know that!?” Chat Noir, no, Adrien shouts.
“That's strictly-” Ladybug always seemed so strong with the mask Robin figured she was someone amazing outside of it. And he was right. Marinette was kind and smart, gave her all to a pet store branch Damian would have otherwise made someone else's responsibility. She left her family, never telling anyone she was Ladybug. It would have been so hard. And now she had been forced to reveal her identity to them, it wasn't fair she deserved… “ROBIN!”
Damian snapped back to reality, in one hand he had his domino mask and his face was bare. On one side was his father looking furious and the other side was…. Marinettte.
“Damian?” Marinette asks, they stare at each other until Marinette lets out a small giggle, Damian huffs in amusement too.
“Why would you ever-”
“Mr Wayne?” Marinette cuts off Batman's rant, her revelation not really helping things.
“You have compromised everyone’s identity,” Batman growls from his look Damian realizes he really messed up.
“She revealed hers,” He tries to defend, "And many heroes already know,"
“You can’t-”
“How about we save this until after we escape?” Marinette cuts in transforming back to Ladybug, so clearly the same person now just with different eyes and hair, “Adrien?”
Chat Noir uses his cataclysm to escape the container, it breaking their little piece of reality and sending them back in a flash of light. He has to run off before his transformation falls leaving the rest to the tense bat fam to help Ladybug out. It was easy to defeat the Akuma from there. Although they may have been stalling somewhat. No one particularly wanting to face Batman's wrath. Hawkmoth was preferable.

Neighbors in a Mask
This is my Secret Santa gift for @theatreandcomicfreak - I hope you like it! I had the help of a wonderful Beta who made this infinitely better😂. Merry Christmas! @maribat-secret-santa-2020 -  I’m also posting it on ao3 😁
“Ok - ok, you can do this! This is just a friendly introduction, what could go wrong? New town, new place, new start.” A wet nose nudged her hand in agreement with her little self-pep talk, and she smiled at her furry companion. Marinette squared her shoulders and knocked on the apartment marked ‘655’, the mantra ‘new town, new place, new start’ ran on repeat in the back of her mind. She fidgeted listening for signs of life on the other end of the door.
She jumped when the door suddenly and silently opened to reveal a man her age - half-dressed, extremely attractive, and wearing the least welcoming glower she’d ever seen.
“Yes?” He raised an eyebrow and crossed his arms.
“I… uh… next door… chest moved in… shirtless - I mean!” She sputtered, face resembling a tomato and she barely managed to grab the plate of macaroons she’d lost her hold on while  she flailed. Holy hell, I haven’t sputtered  this much since…
That thought sobered her right up, and she shook her head to clear the nervous clutter. She took a big breath and started again.
“Sorry - I just moved in next door,” she jerked a thumb to her left, indicating the other condo in the pair. “I wanted to bring these over and introduce myself - I’m Marinette Dupain-Cheng, and this is my dog Squishy.” She gestured to the cream-colored Pit Bull, and he glanced down for a half a moment. “I just moved here from Paris! I’m a fashion designer and novice gardener-”
“Look, I have a lot of work to do,” He cut her off with an exasperated sigh. “I am not interested in whatever you are selling - whether it is a product, business deal, or yourself.” Her jaw dropped. “I do not socialize beyond what is forced upon me by my family - so you have wasted your time. Good day.” He nodded stiffly at her and shut the door.
What the fu…
She stared at the same spot on the forest green door until Squishy whined and nudged her hand. She looked  to see the dog leaning on her leg and slowly wagging her tail.
“Squish… did you hear him say what I think he said?” She asked, looking at the door. She received  another nudge, this time from her purse on her other side.
She peered down to see Tikki’s blue orbs looking at her  with  concern. Marinette  smiled in reassurance.
“I’m fine Tik -  just rebooting.” A small giggle sounded from the bag, and Mari’s smile grew. She gave the door one last look and huffed.
“Oh well,” She shrugged. “Might as well head home.”
She stepped off his stoop and strolled over to her own, her deep red door already decorated with a spring wreath - little ladybugs hidden throughout. She shut the door behind her and caught  the plate  for a  second time when  a black blur zipped right in front of her face.
“Hey Bug, I overheard your  little exchange… want me to phase over and cataclysm his TV or something?”
“Plagg! What have I said about startling me? You’re gonna give me a heart attack!” He ignored her, floating in lazy circles near her ear. She continued to grumble about the cat as she continued to the kitchen - Tikki flying out of Mari’s purse to join her other half.
“No cataclysms!” The Luck God scolded him, crossing her paws. “We can’t risk anyone becoming  suspicious of where the guardian is - anyone who knows  the temple returned will be on the hunt!”
“Please,” Plagg scoffed. “I can pop  in and out without him noticing and not leave a trace - it’d probably at least annoy the hell out of Mr-stick-up-his-”
“As much as I’d like to get him back for his rude  comment - seriously, where does he get off?!” Marinette interrupted with a sigh and a small smile. “Tikki’s right, and it wouldn’t be very guardian or Ladybug-like of me besides.”
“Fine - but the offer still stands.” The little floating cat huffed, flying over to where Squishy cuddled  in her bed by the window, watching her owner for signs of needing her.
It was odd how well the dog and cat god got along - Plagg refused to acknowledge he was fond of the Pit Bull, but they were found more often than not sleeping curled  together on Mari’s bed at night, and Marinette suspected he snuck  her treats.
“As long as we don’t see each other much beyond going in or out of our places - it shouldn’t be a problem.” She shrugged, popping a cookie from the plate in her mouth and handing one to Tikki who happily accepted. “With how ‘busy’ he alluded to being - it shouldn’t be hard.”
*******************************************************************************
Turns out -  easier said than done.
She saw him the next day in line at a coffee shop accompanied by  a man a few years older than him who looked as if  death had warmed over. Mr. Grouchy made eye contact with her and scowled before turning away with a tsk.
She rolled her eyes and focused back on the barista. “Hello,” she smiled as much as she could manage at the buttcrack of dawn. “It’s a longshot, but do you happen to have any ‘Black Insomnia’ or ‘High Voltage’?” The blonde behind the counter paled.
“Not another one.” She whispered, her eyes darting over to the man being tugged along by her neighbor.
Marinette tilted her head in question, and the barista seemed to shake it off.
“We are well stocked with Black Insomnia, what size will it  be and how would you like it made?” She asked, her customer service smile  strained.
“The largest you have - as black as you can make it.” She smiled back and took her receipt, walking over to a booth, overhearing her call out for a “Suicidal Wayne” just as another worker called out for the same drink.
The older boy, the one who looked in desperate need of a good night's sleep, leaned on Mr. Pissy as if he was the only thing keeping him upright - but at the mention of the order, his eyes snapped over to her. He gave her a small wave, and she returned it with a quirked brow. He looked close to  moving  over, but Sir Scowls-a-lot stopped him with a hand on his arm. He spoke in a low voice, and the tired man’s face melted into a mix of disappointment and exasperation. The man shot her an annoyed look and turned back to the front.
She wanted  to go over and demand to know what he could  possibly say   having met her once for five minutes, but the barista called out three names - hers, ‘Tim’,  and ‘Damian’. She walked  up before the two could move and grabbed her cup, thanking the woman, before brushing past ‘Tim and Damian’ on her way out. She was in a rush - there was a show coming up next week and she had fittings all day, she didn’t have time to deal with her asshat of a neighbor and his friend with good taste in coffee.
*******************************************************************************************
As the days passed, they continued bumping into each other. Their dynamic well-past talking, favoring annoyed glares and eye rolls. He wanted to scare her off (the Wayne lawyer way or Robin way - he hadn’t decided yet), but his father and brothers refused - insisting she hadn’t done anything deserving of any kind of action.
Yet. His mind supplied.
There was something off about her - the sixth sense he’d acquired through his life was never wrong, and she set it  off like fireworks whenever she was near. He couldn’t get a read on her intentions, but he wasn’t one to wait for the other shoe to drop - he planned to keep his eye on her.
*******************************************************************************************
He saw her again on patrol a week and a half after she first knocked on his door.
He was in costume uniform tailing a group of five men who  had recently left a warehouse that  belonged to  the Penguin. Red Hood stationed  across the street following parallel to him.
The men turned the corner on Hood’s side, and Robin signaled he would wait until they were out of earshot before grappling over. Hood nodded and continued trailing them.
Robin waited for a beat, then shot his hook out to grab the highest ledge available.
“Shit.” Hood’s voice through his comm made his hand jerk and his grappling hook missed the mark. He released his own curse and reshot as soon as the cable  fully retracted.
“Report, Hood.” He snapped, flipping at the arc of his swing and sailing over the first building.
“They’re targeting a girl - she looks  your age, tiny, at least partially Asian,” Hood grunted lowly.
Damian groaned.
“Acquaintance of yours, Demon Spawn?” Red Hood teased.
“No names in the field, Hood.” He hissed. “And it’s  my new neighbor - she keeps popping up like a bad penny.”
“The one you said tried  to butter you up with cookies, and drinks the same motor oil as Replacement?” Hood asked. Robin landed beside him, leaning over the ledge to watch the girl’s progress as she leisurely strolled down the street with several shopping bags.
“<Tt>, idiot,” Robin muttered under his breath. “That’s her.” He glanced at Hood who nodded.
“You know - I still say you might have misjudged the situation - Timmy said she didn’t seem the cozy-ing up type and seemed  kinda openly pissed at you.” Red Hood mused.
“No. Names. In. The. Field. Hood.” Robin grit out, tired of this conversation - he’d had  versions of it with his family ever since the coffee shop incident.
Everyone insisted the  Dupain-Cheng girl was trying to be nice - but he looked through her records, and found  an unprecedented amount of bullying accusations against her in high school, and she’d quit her job at ‘Agreste’ with no warning - but that was oddly heavily-guarded information. He had been locked out of many of even the simplest social media accounts and public records - especially anything to do with the Agreste brand founder. A  familiar itch on the back of his neck told  him he was onto something big - and his suspiciously friendly neighbor was connected.
Hood took a breath as if to continue the conversation when Robin put a hand up and signaled downward.
They both looked to see the tiny girl turn sharply across the road and into a dead-end alleyway. She’s even stupider than I assumed , Robin mentally groaned as he and Red Hood scrambled to follow.
They dropped to street-level and ran over to the alley, prepared to find the young woman in need of saving, only to see three men passed out near the entrance.  A dented trash lid resting nearby.  The small girl, who looked like Red Hood could lift her with one hand, flipped  a fourth over her shoulder with ease.
“Holy Mother-” Hood gaped at the scene and  sidestepped  the flying body - it landed behind him on top of the others.
Robin didn’t flinch as the man sailed past and ruffled his cape. His eyes were fixed on the girl as she high-kicked the last man under the jaw - knocking him out immediately. He couldn’t stop the words ‘almalak almuharib[1]’ from slipping past his lips in an awed gasp. He’d never seen anything so beautiful in all his life.
He shook himself, scowling at the foolish thoughts that rose unbidden. Perhaps she is a shaman or spell caster. That is it - this must be a  spell. He reasoned to himself.
He watched, still unable to move, as the girl dusted off her clothes and reached into her bag.
“Are you two gonna help, or do you plan to stand there with your mouths open like a couple of fish.” She asked as she turned around with a handful of zip ties, eyebrow quirked.
“You have  one hell of a kick, kid.” Red Hood broke the silence, moving forward to grab a few of the proffered zip ties (even though he had plenty of his own).
“It was nothing.” She brushed off the complement with a wave of her hand and a light rose dusting on her cheeks.
Red Hood scoffed, “Whatever kid, that was the most badass take-down I’ve seen in a while - and I know Wonder Woman.” He extended his fist for a bump.
Her smile fell  from her face as if she’d been slapped - her eyes fixated on the proffered fist and starting to water.
“Uh…” Red Hood lowered  his arm, “I ain’t trying to hit you kid… you guys have fist bumps in Europe, right?” He laughed nervously and scratched the back of his neck.
“I… It’s nothing - you just... reminded me of a friend.” She whispered, taking in a shuddering breath and turning  sharply to secure the last guy she knocked unconscious.
Robin shared a look with his brother (an odd thing to do through a helmet, but they knew each other well enough for  it to work) and shrugged, before taking out his own zip ties and turning to the pile of three large men.
As they finished  with the other four, Marinette walked past them with her bags and a quick “I’ll leave them to you, then” - and left the alleyway, disappearing from sight.
“That… was weird, right?” Hood said, staring after her. “Shouldn’t we make her stick around to give a statement?”
Robin shook his head slowly. “I think… it would be best to let her go... this time. We have both seen that look before.” In the mirror every time we lost a teammate in battle, he glared   where he’d last seen her retreating figure, and puzzled  over the new information.
“Wait, wait, wait, I agree she can fight  and all, but are you really saying that the little pipsqueak...” He choked out in surprise, Damian could tell his eyes were bugging under his mask.
“I’m not sure, but she’s certainly no average civilian.” He cut his brother off with a shake of his head. “I suggest we keep an eye on her.”
“Hey, if you two have finished your little intrusion into the poor girl’s life and traumas, the police are  a minute out.” Barbra, or rather, Oracle’s voice sounded from their earpieces.
Damian took one last look at where she’d disappeared to before turning away with narrowed eyes and a “<Tt>”.
*******************************************************************************************
Marinette withdrew following  the encounter in the alley - barely acknowledging her surly neighbor, Squishy refused to leave her side, and Plagg and Tikki often needed to call her name several times before she’d respond… The  Kwamii were worried.
“Tik… we only just pulled  her out of the slump she was in back in Paris after…” Plagg’s normally light and expressive face fell, his tail, ears, and whiskers drooping.
“I know… It’s never easy to lose one.” She whispered with a pained wince, past memories flashing in front of her eyes. She floated over to her other half and pulled him into her, petting the back of his head as stuttering purrs overtook  his shaking.
“If she continues to relive it, we’ll lose her too - remember  Keket.” Tikki shuddered at the reminder of the young girl.
“No… we can’t let that happen again,” Plagg growled, the memories of the long lost kitten painful even all these years later. They couldn’t let that happen to Marinette. Tikki nodded firmly into his shoulder.
*******************************************************************************************
Marinette stretched out under a large oak tree in the city gardens, her sketchbook open on her lap and Squishy laid  over her legs - keeping guard. She stared at the blank page with unfocused eyes, memories swimming  in her head out of order and distorted.
“*Sniff* Mommy... Daddy…” A small voice sobbed, pulling her from her musings. She closed her book and set it aside. Squishy took that as a signal to get up and look around, her ears swiveling alertly.
“Where is it coming from, Squish?” She reached  to rest her hand on the dog’s back, Marinette stood  and looked  around intently.
Her dog gave a soft *wuff* and tugged on the leash. Marinette turned and allowed the Pit Bull to direct her. As they neared the bushes the sound came  from, Marinette stopped  short at the sight of a familiar well-kept head of dark hair and moved her and Squishy to peek around them to the bench beyond.
From her position, she saw  her prickly neighbor crouching next to a boy of about five or six whose cries turned into soft giggles as a Great Dane licked at his face, tail wagging wildly.
“Alright Titus, let the boy breathe.” The man grunted, tugging lightly on the large dog’s collar. “Now, have you calmed enough to tell me your name?” He asked in a surprisingly gentle voice, turning his attention to the boy. The kid nodded, sniffing and reaching out to pat the dog - who happily leaned in.
“E-Ethan… My name’s Ethan Sorensen, Mr. Wayne.” He said shyly.
“Ah, you recognize me?” The younger boy nodded, still stroking the dog.
The Wayne Heir returned the nodd. “Good - at least you didn’t talk  to  a complete stranger. You should be more careful though, the world - and this city especially - are dangerous places for someone  young and inexperienced.” He scolded with a frown.
The boy shrunk in, and Titus nudged further into the boy, whining slightly. The temperamental man sighed and hesitantly put a hand on the boy’s shoulder.
“I do not mean to be harsh - I am merely  glad I found you first.” He gave the boy a strained smile and it received a laugh from the kid. His eye twitched in annoyance.
“<Tt>,” He groused, pulling back and taking out his phone. He tapped a few times before placing the phone against his ear. “Gordon, I have a boy named Ethan Sorensen alone in the Southeast end of Robinson Park, have there been any missing child reports?” He nodded at whatever response he received. “Good, let your father know we will wait  for them on a bench... Yes, of course I plan to remain with him! He is no older than six!... Yes, yes, I will stay behind to issue a statement to the officer… Goodbye Gordon.” He hung up the phone and returned it to his pocket before turning back to the boy.
“Your parents are on their way, would you like to play fetch with Titus until they arrive?” He received a shy nodd in return and handed over a yellow batman-themed ball which was enthusiastically chased  once thrown.
Marinette watched a few more throws before retreating to the tree where she had left her bag and packed up.
“So he can be sweet,” she mused to Tikki under her breath.
The Kwamii poked her head out of Mari’s pocket and giggled. “Though he didn’t seem super comfortable with the situation, he went out of his way to be kind to the boy. He stepped  up when needed.”
“Yeah, I guess our grumpy-goose next door can act like a human - now and then.” Marinette laughed, turning toward the park’s exit, a light flutter in her chest  after watching her awkward frenemy do something kind.
*******************************************************************************************
That night, Marinette seriously considered  donning her mask for the first time in over a year.
She couldn’t explain why, but watching Damian’s secretly sweet nature peek through had  lifted her spirits. She felt more like her old self than she had in a long time.
The dark and handsome man was obviously out of his comfort zone in interacting with the boy, but his desire to help another person outweighed his own discomfort. Mari’s guardian senses could see the effort it took to overcome the deep-seated parasitic darkness that latched onto his being. .
Her bones buzzed with an energy that had been absent for  a year. She didn't call for a transformation though - her Guardian duties came first, and she needed to understand the city as a healer before she could take on an active protector role.
Using the recovered energy, she took back up a project she'd been working on - knitting hats, gloves, and scarves with needles Wayzz helped her infuse with a warming charm. She planned to give them away at the shelter she volunteered at on weekends when the weather turned in a few months.
She had four sets of mittens done and adjusted the needles to start on a fifth when a loud crash sounded from the other end of the wall. She jumped up and grabbed the retractable baton she stored in her crafting room, sliding into a crouching position. Tikki and Plagg flew over from the cushion they were lounging on to hover next to her.
They waited in suspense  - listening for clues as to what was going on beyond the wall.
After a few moments, a pained groan sounded along with another, smaller crash.
Was it… her surly Wayne neighbor?
She shared a glance with Tikki and Plagg, and the three nodded. Plagg phased through the wall, and Tikki flew to Mari’s shoulder. An anxious minute later, Plagg returned, stifling laughter with his paws.
“Oh yeah - he’s gonna need some help,” He snorted. “And what is it with you attracting all the weirdos?” He cackled, flying over to the mini-fridge she kept stocked with Kwamii food and phasing through.
“You’ll want to bring the first aid kit,” he continued, exiting the fridge with a small wheel of cheese and taking a large bite before continuing. “Probably keep the baton with you in case there’s trouble - the kid may not be much help  watching your back.”
That snapped her to attention, and she rushed off to her bathroom to grab the enormous first aid kit she collected over  years of hero work. She pulled on a coat - Tikki slipping into a pocket - and shoved her feet into her deep red combat boots, quickly tying them before rushing out her front door and over to the stoop she’d glared  at in passing for weeks.
Marinette  took a deep breath to calm herself before testing the door - which was of course locked. She huffed and pulled out the lock-pick set she stored in the inner lining of her boots. She unlocked  the door after two frustrating minutes - it seemed her neighbor wasn’t satisfied with the standard locks that came with the condos and installed his own.
Once inside, she closed the door behind her and re-locked it  - noticing a blinking red light on a small black box along the side of the door.
Probably a silent alarm, she mused, No matter - I’m here to help and have no intention of harming… Oh geez, I don’t even know his name - what will the police think when they arrive  here?! What names did the barista say  at the coffee house? - Tim and… Damian? Gah! It doesn’t matter - he still needs help! She shook herself and continued along the hallway with the first aid kit in her left hand and the baton in her right - raised and ready for trouble.
“Um… Hello?” She called out, deciding it was better to alert any robbers than to scare her injured neighbor. “It’s Marinette Dupain-Cheng - your neighbor next door? I heard a crash and someone in pain, so I let myself in…” Having cleared the first floor, she turned to the stairs at the back of the house past the kitchen. “Mr. Wayne?”
A pained grunt sounded from the top of the stairs and she tensed further, not foolish enough to rush  ahead after the warning Plagg gave  - even if it wasn’t bad enough to insist on coming himself.
“Is that you, Mr. Wayne?” She called, narrowing her eyes as she reached the top of the stairs.
“I...in here...” A deep male voice coughed from the last room to her right, and she heard a low growling as she entered the room.
“I’m going to turn on the light.” She called a moment before she did.
Muttered cursing sounded at the light and drew her eyes to the floor under the window where the young Wayne lay on his side, clutching a gash over his chest, and surrounded by glass. The  man was dressed in a ripped Robin uniform she’d become familiar with due to all the merch that littered the city.
“Oh…” Marinette  whispered, Plagg’s comment on attracting weirdos now making sense. She heaved a deep sigh.
“His name is Titus, right?” The dog twitched at his name, and his master nodded stiffly. “Will he  let me take a look at your injuries?” She retracted the baton and set it on the ground slowly with the kit, keeping her movements slow, and returning to a standing position with her palms empty and up.
“Titus, hda[2].” The dog slowly relaxed his tense position and looked back at the boy on the ground behind him. “Rahab[3].” The man said,  nodding toward her, wincing as it pulled at one of his many injuries.
Though she didn’t understand the language of the commands, their meanings were obvious - she sank to the floor again and turned to her side, slowly offering her hand for the great black beast to sniff. He cautiously approached her and watched her body language intently as he snuffled at her hand - leaving a cool trail behind, which would have made her giggle in  another situation.
Finally deciding to trust her , he licked her cheek and released a whine - tugging her jacket sleeve over to his injured master. She reached back to grab her kit and allowed the dog to pull her forward.
“Where are you hurt most severely?” She asked, kneeling beside him, ignoring the few pricks of glass in her legs as she did so.
“The gash on my chest is the only one that needs looked at immediately... the others are superficial.” He wheezed lightly, his voice strained.
“Was your head or spine injured to your knowledge?” At the slight shake of his head, she carefully slid her arms under him and gently lifted him into a princess carry. He let out an indignant and surprised manly squeak and she tried to hide her smile.
“Your partners, do you want me to contact them?” She asked, entering the connected bathroom and flipping the switch with her shoulder.
“My communicator and tracker are busted - though if you came through the front door, they were alerted and will send someone to check when  I do not respond.”
She nodded and set him into the tub as gently as she could, shooing Titus away from sticking his head in as close as he could get it to the man. She set her kit on the floor and pulled out a pair of scissors. He snorted at the sight.
“Those will not even make a scratch in -” She grinned at his stunned silence as she nearly glided through the material, snagging  a few times on previously patched parts.
“...” He stared at the scissors as she shifted to cut the sleeves. “This is the highest grade kevlar… how in the…” He turned to meet her laughing eyes and quirked an eyebrow.
“I have my secrets,” She gestured to the suit she was tearing into. “And you have your’s.” He pinned her with a look, but she raised her own brow as if to ask ‘you don’t actually expect me to tell you, do you?’
He scoffed and turned to the wall.
She laughed and moved the last of the material out of the way - turning back to her kit to gather her supplies.
“I don’t suppose you’d let me give you any Lidocaine?” He gave her a ‘what do you think?’ look. “That’s what I thought - want something to bite on?”
“I’ll be fine.” He grumbled, turning away again.
“Alright tough guy, I’m gonna just dive in - if you need a break or want to change your mind, let me know.” He nodded, and she threaded the hooked needle, glancing at him once more before starting in.
She was amazed at how little he reacted - a few face twitches at most - and she made sure to get through it as quickly as possible. After tying it off, she cleaned around the wound and taped gauze over it, and nodded to herself in satisfaction.
She turned  to grab more alcohol swabs, only to find the injured hero unsteadily climbing  to his feet.
“Just what do you think you’re doing?” She asked, exasperated.
“The rest is livable - I will be fine. Thank you for-”
“Thank me when I’m done patching you up, you stubborn fool.” She rolled her eyes, pushing him back down.
“How are you so strong?!” He huffed. “I don’t know of many civilians who could lift a grown man without an issue…” He left the statement trailing like a question, and she laughed.
“I grew up in a bakery - I’ve been lifting bags of flour my whole life.” She shrugged, taping up his finished arm and moving onto another gash.
“Sure…” He scoffed, not believing for a second that was all there was to it. She shrugged in response.
They sat in silence until she finished , tapping on the last square of gauze.
“Alright,” She helped him to his feet  and over to his bed. “Is there anything else you need?”
He shook his head, giving a soft ‘Thank you’ - reaching out to catch her hand as she began walking over to retrieve  the baton she’d left by his door.
“Truly - I… I would have been in trouble if you had not found me when you did. The others are in the middle of a fight and my beacon was broken before I could activate it… there might  still be  time before they worry.”
“Happy to help.” She smiled, patting his arm. He nodded, breaking eye contact again and patting Titus who jumped on the bed  to snuggle  the man.
“By the way…” She started. “What is your name? I know your last name is Wayne - that’s what the boy at the park said anyway, and I think it’s either ‘Damian’ or ‘Tim’ - because those were the names the barista gave at the coffee shop…”
“Wait,” He stopped her. “You… don’t know who I am?”
“Um… should I? The way the boy said it made it sound  as if you’re well known here - but I’m only familiar with Parisian celebrities.”
“Oh, then… I believe I may owe you an apology.” He scratched the back of his head, still avoiding eye contact.
“Yes, yes you do - but what are you referring to?” She started with a irked look, and he had the decency to look abashed.
“When you first came to my door… I thought it another instance of someone trying to get in my good graces because I’m a Wayne. My father and brothers have warned me against social climbers, and I find it best to avoid encouraging them by making my disinterest known right away.” He still refused to meet her eyes and she reached out to touch his shoulder.
She waited until he met her eyes before speaking. “I appreciate and accept your apology, and  I understand. ” He raised a disbelieving brow.
“No,” she chuckled, “Really. Back in Paris, I had a few friends who suffered from  the same problem - an Olympic fencer, a model, a rock singer…” She shrugged. “I get it… but I’d also like to start again if you’re up for it?”
He stared at her for a moment, taking in her sincerity, before he slowly nodded and extended his hand.
“Hello… I am Damian Wayne.” She grinned and grasped his hand.
“Marinette Dupain-Cheng.”
*******************************************************************************************
Dick burst into the apartment moments after Marinette returned to her own home - leaving her phone number behind with strict instructions to call if he needed anything. He explained what  happened - causing Dick check for a concussion when he openly admitted to misjudging her - and was taken to the cave.
Alfred was impressed with Marinette’s stitch job, and only needed to re-bandage the wounds he’d checked. His father had interrogated him for several hours when he found out a near-stranger  knew at least Robin’s identity. He was talked down from all-out kidnapping the girl for answers only because Damian insisted on it - and he rarely stood up for his family, let alone strangers. So, they decided to keep a close eye on her when she went out (Damian living directly next door kept them from over-bugging the outside of her home).
They discovered she worked  in a small boutique in the Fashion District, and volunteered  at a shelter. When she wasn’t at either of those places or running errands, she wandered the city for places to sit and sketch. They had the sneaking suspicion she knew of their presence , but hadn’t caught her looking directly at them yet.
They were all  wary of her but eventually  eased up on their suspicions the more they were around the little - but strangely strong - ball of sunshine.
*******************************************************************************************
A few nights later, Damian awoke to the sounds of muffled cries. He instinctively jolted out of bed and reached for the sword next to his nightstand. Listening, he found the sounds came from Marinette’s apartment. He popped open the door to his balcony located  on the same wall as hers.
Leaping over - narrowly avoiding knocking over one of the many pots strewn on  every surface - he slunk over to her door and peeked inside, expecting  a struggle and looking for the best opening to intervene.
What he saw was his small neighbor (friend?) curled  on her bed, tangled in her blankets, with tears streaming down her face. She thrashed, a whimper loud enough for him to hear through the glass slipping through her lips.
He sighed and set his shoulders - he’d seen enough night terrors from his brothers, the Titans, and even members of his grandfather’s League to know he wouldn’t leave her to suffer, but not looking forward to explaining how he entered .
Working on  the simple lock, he slid the door open silently, and closed it behind him, leaning his sword against it where she wouldn’t notice it unless she paid attention. .
A whine halted his approach, and he paused, noticing the butter-colored Pit Bull at the foot of the bed - having obviously knocked off in her mistress’ movement - and reached a hand out. The dog sniffed hesitantly, her tail stuck firmly between her legs, and her ears flat against her head in worry.
“It’s alright, girl, I am here to help.” He soothed, rubbing at her ears until her tail uncurled and began to half-heartedly wag.
“NON!... CHAT!” The girl on the bed sobbed, her arms flailing as if reaching for something.
He was at her side in an instant, grabbing her arms and readying himself in case she fought him.
“Mari!” He called, shaking her none too gently, “Mari! It is a dream! You need to wake up!”
It took several tries, but soon her eyes shot open.
She sat up, latching onto the first thing she found, and as he still held  her wrists, (and her dog was on the floor) he found his arms full of a sobbing Marinette. She gasped, muttering in French  how sorry she was, how she should have been stronger, how it was her fault…
He held her, as his brothers did for him for months after he came back from the pits and awoke from his own nightmares. He started to rock back and forth - smoothing her hair, and she cuddled in closer, her cries pittering out.
The city’s ambience filled the room - interspersed with the slight creaking of the bed at Damian’s continued rocking motion.
“Do you wish to talk about it?” He asked after what felt like both a moment and an eternity.
She hesitated, before starting in a small, frail voice.
He learned  what  transpired in France with the villain the League had been forbidden from interfering with. She told him of  the emotional trauma - having to police your own emotions, watching loved ones be used, watching them die horribly, only to have them come back with no memory of the fact.
And then - she told him about Ladybug.
She didn’t swear him to secrecy or threaten him if he told anyone - it spilled out with everything else.
She had been alone.
As a civilian, she was isolated, and as a hero - she had no one to lean on, especially once  entrusted with the Guardian title. She had only her Kwamii (whatever that was - she made it seem like some  all-powerful sprite) who knew her identity, and she couldn’t properly vent for fear of becoming ‘akumatized’.
She told him about the final battle. How it turned out to be the father of a friend who terrorized  everyone, how her partner had nearly fallen apart in grief - as it was his father - and how her partner, her friend, had died saving her from his father’s blade. The blow caused his own power, a "cataclysm" to defensively implode, destroying everything in the vicinity - even the bearer of the ring. Marinette's saving grace was her own power, the ultimate balance to destruction, which shielded her from the blast.
She sobbed into his shoulder after the tale was done until she eventually fell into a deep sleep.
He set her back into the bed gently and covered her with the blankets. Moving to the chair in the corner he  slumped down,  head in his hands,  absorbing  the emotion and information her story had left him with.
A wet nose nudged his arm, and he looked down to see her dog slowly wagging her tail and giving him sad puppy-eyes. He gave her a small smile.
“It’ll be alright…” He shifted to search for a tag to find  her name - not remembering it from Marinette’s initial introduction.
“It’s Squishy.” A small, high voice called. He jerked his head up to watch a red fairy-bug…thing float down to rest on the dog’s head. “Mari found her rooting through some trash in an alley a week after the final battle - they’ve been inseparable  ever since.”
They eyed each other for a moment before he broke the silence.
“...Tikki… right?” That was the name from Marinette’s story. She nodded, her big sky-blue eyes analyzing  his soul.
“I am Tikki, Kwamii  of Creation and good luck. Thank you for helping my chosen tonight - Plagg and I couldn’t wake her.” She drooped. “This one was particularly bad.” He nodded, and another sprite floated over, this one pitch black with a tail, small pointed ears, and ancient, acid green eyes.
“I’m Plagg - Kwamii of Destruction and bad luck - and I won’t hesitate to cataclysm you into oblivion if you hurt my Bug with the info she trusted you with tonight - or at all, for that matter.” It should have been impossible, with all of his experience, to be frightened of such a tiny being, but Damian found himself shuddering at the fierce protectiveness all the same.
“Understood.” Damian nodded.
“Good.” And just like that, the eyes were half-lidded and looked bored. “Do you have any fancy cheese at your place? The Bug cut me off from the good stuff after I tangled  her  expensive yarn or whatever.” He rolled his eyes and crossed his ‘arms’.
“Plagg! Can you not think of your stomach for once?!” The red sprite cried, exasperated.
“I spent the whole night watching Spots and trying to wake her when the dream started, then I threatened the birdboy - that’s a long time!” He pouted, and Damian huffed in amusement at how much the tiny cat reminded him of Todd’s bottomless pit of a stomach.
“There’s blue cheese and brie in the fridge.” He pointed down and to the side where his kitchen lay, and was shocked as the cat passed directly through the wall without a word.
“Sorry about him ,” Tikki said with a fond sigh. “He’s worried about Mari, and pretending he doesn't care is how he copes.” She took on a serious look and pinned him with it.
“I know you’re  a hero and used to keeping secrets, but the miraculous are the most powerful artifacts in the world. We existed  before the dawn of man, and we will far out-live your kind.” He stared at her, the ancient power from the cat now pulsed  from her, telling him she wasn’t to be trifled with.
“Mari is all alone in this, and we planned  to convince her to seek help from your “league of heroes” soon, so this is not entirely  inconvenient - but she trusted you. She is  gifted with excellent instincts - both as a Ladybug and a Guardian - I don’t oppose her choice, but I warn you - should you cause any harm to befall her, you will answer to me.” Damian shuddered for the second time that night - the second time in years - and nodded solemnly.
“I understand.” She searched his eyes for another minute before her own softened.
“I see  you do. You’ve  endured your own trials.” He looked at the lump on the bed to avoid her stare. “I think you will be good for each other.” She mused, rising from Squishy’s head and floating over to the wall connecting his home to Marinettes’.
“I’m going to make sure Plagg hasn’t eaten everything you own.” She giggled, and phased through the wall.
He released a shuddering breath and slumped down from his stiff position - reaching over to pet Squishy’s head as she leaned in and began to thump her tail against the floor. He smiled softly at the sight and sunk further back into the chair with a deep sigh.
He leaned back, staring at the ceiling, trying to sort through how to help the neighbor he’d assumed was after his money and name. He winced at his previous misconceptions. He  needed more practice at  learning to accurately read people - perhaps he could convince Cass to coach him in nonverbal cues.
He shook his head, helping Marinette build  a support system was top priority. He’d always bemoaned his family getting in his way - but at least he’d never been left alone. From her story, it seemed like she’d run  the entire Paris operation on her own the four years Hawkmoth had been at large.
The first step was to involve  his Father and siblings  - they’d know how to execute a plan  - but he felt it had to come  at her own pace. From what she said, she’d had no choice but to play catch-up during her entire battle - since she was twelve.
He continued to chase his thoughts  in a dizzying dance until he eventually succumbed to sleep, not noticing when the kwamii crept back and snuggled in alongside Marinette.
*******************************************************************************************
Three months later - a tiny girl in a dark red and black ensemble was spotted running on rooftops alongside Robin, Red Hood, and Nightwing, her light, bell-like laughter ringing out into the Gotham night.
The local media pages blew up - the people of Gotham fell  in love with their ‘Ladybird’ and her sweet nature which  opposed the stoic and gruff bats. It was interesting for them to see her banter and fight alongside the other members of the team -  especially Robin, who became  her shadow, rarely leaving her side.
She had several blogs dedicated to her feats and theories about the miraculously healed injuries and repaired battle sites. It didn’t take long for people  from France to find the numerous articles, and start the rumor she was once their ‘Ladybug’, but there was no solid evidence. The two looked and acted completely differently.
Ladybird was free-spirited and light of heart, whereas Ladybug was serious and professional. Many speculated the  Ladybug miraculous  traded hands, but, as there was no supernatural Cat seen, it  remained an unlikely theory.
Unfortunately for the bloggers, it was hard to snag  a good look at the bats, as they thrived in the darkness. Others  commented on Robin’s costume change, but Ladybird’s appearance  took the spotlight.
If they had caught a closer look, they would have found Robin’s red and yellow colors gone , and the forest green was replaced with a more muted-toxic tone. Thankfully, his hood hid the most significant changes as he now sported two small velvet ears that reacted to sound and emotion, and his usual katakana now had a pitch-black blade with green detailing on the hilt.
In completely unrelated news,  the youngest son of Gotham’s resident billionaire was  in the news frequently as he’d taken to hanging around a petite Asian-French girl who was rumored to be a famous designer from France. She was photographed numerous times on outings with Damian and both their dogs - who got  along even better than  their owners.
Due to her kind nature and enchanting  smile, she quickly gained the  nickname  ‘Sunshine of Gotham’ and the tag trended frequently  on Twitter.
During an interview with a fashion magazine, she was asked if she’d ever leave the city of crime, and the answer she’d given was proudly displayed in the Gotham Gazette the next day.
“The people of Gotham have heart and spunk which  can’t be matched - I was welcomed here after a difficult time in France, and I don’t see myself growing tired of being challenged and cared for in the way only Gotham can.”

Something with Wind and Wild finding out Wild’s actually related to Wind? (It’s a personal hc of mine that they’re related due to vah medoh being named after Medli and the fact that there are rito in the first place + rito’s village theme being a variant of the dragon roost island theme)
Thank you for the prompt anon! That’s a fun headcanon and I did my best with it! I hope you enjoy!
I said in an announcement I’m putting shorter requests/drabbles in its own story and place in my masterlist to make things a bit more organized. Here’s the Ao3 link to that.
Related
“When will we learn to stop trying to figure out the timeline.” Warriors deadpanned to Sky as he watched the others fight.
“Do we ever learn?” Sky replied, laughing at the sight before him. He supposed there were benefits to being the forger of the Master Sword. His place in the timeline was relatively solid.
“No, no, no. We all know there are different timelines, there has to be.” Hyrule waved his hands.
“Yes, and you and Legend are in the same one, we know that at least.” Four nodded.
“Why does it matter?” Wild whispered to Twilight.
“It doesn’t.” Twilight said simply.
“That’s funny coming from you! Legend pointed. “You have blood relation to prove your place in the timeline!”
“It’s Time’s fault for breaking the timeline in the first place.” Four accused.
“Hey! Blame the sages, not me.” Time spoke up, holding his hands up in defense.
“Do you know where you are in the timeline?” Twilight asked Wild curiously while the others fought around their campfire.
“It’s been 10,000 years since the last hero in my Hyrule.” Wild shrugged. “So, I mean, does it even matter in my timeline?”
“I’ve never been big on blood meaning everything, the people in Ordon are my family even though I was found in the woods. But if you’re curious, we may be able to figure it out.” Twilight assured. Wild never knew how he and the others somehow always knew what to say to him.
The truth was, Wild wasn’t sure that he wanted to know the answer. The group had helped him understand that the events of 100 years ago was out of his control, even if he had a hard time believing it sometimes. But he wasn’t stupid, he saw the forlorn gazes the others cast towards the ruins of his Hyrule. Castletown was a ghost of itself, even if Zelda had plans to begin rebuilding, it wouldn’t be the bustling city the other Links knew for a long time, perhaps with the small population of his Hyrule it never would be.
But he loved his Hyrule. He knew every inch of the land yet it still managed to surprise him. The land nurtured him, and he nurtured the land. He ensured monsters didn’t destroy nature, and nature forgave him for letting wildfires. He killed animals for food and ensured he used every part. The others could make fun of him all they wanted, but it was a mutual bond he longed for when he was far from it. To see the others look at it with such sad gazes after a long journey… he understood, but it hurt.
“Meh.” Wild answered. “If we happen to figure it out, then we figure it out.” Wild ignored the suspicious look Twi sent him. Wolf boy was too perceptive for his own good.
“Well Wild and I are obviously in similar timelines!” Wind, with ever impeccable timing, proclaimed.
“Don’t sound so sure.” Warriors challenged. “Don’t forget that almost your entire world is water.” Warriors said, as if Wind could forget that. As if Wind could forget that his entire kingdom of Hyrule flooded, the kingdom Time worked so hard to protect.
“Yeah, no shit!” Wind cursed to let out some steam. “But water dries, I’ve seen entire places in other Hyrules that used to be covered in water.”
“Those are lakes and rivers, not entire oceans.” Legend spoke up.
“Yeah but Wild has said before that the last hero came 10,000 years before him! Who knows what has happened since my time! And before the hero who knows how long it’s been since I was there!” Wind puffed out his chest.
“What makes you so sure it’s you anyway?” Hyrule asked.
“Easy! Our Koroks are practically identical! I mean evolution takes time right?” Wind asked with arms wide. “And Vah Medoh, that divine beast Wild told us about, sounds like Medli from the Rito in my world. And you guys don’t even have Rito! Maybe they originated in my Hyrule and continued on in Wild’s Hyrule! The music they play and their instruments are really similar!” As Wind kept listing off points, Wild didn’t know what to think. Wind? His predecessor? Perhaps even his blood? How was he supposed to react?
“And what does Wild think of this theory?” Sky raised an eyebrow. Despite his teasing tone, Wild knew Sky was making sure he wasn’t left out of this conversation, and it wasn't for the first time Wild was extremely grateful for Sky.
“Yeah Wild! What do you think?” Wind was practically vibrating with excitement and nerves. What did Wild think? He didn’t have any better theories, and besides, Wind made a lot of valid points. Wild bit his lip.
“W-well.” Shit, Wild could feel the words bubbling in his throat again. It’s been so long though! “I mean, I- well.” Wild tried to repeat what he had been thinking about, how Wind made great points and how the boy had obviously thought long and hard about this. Instead, with a frustrated huff, he raised his hands to sign, as usual he appreciated that no one interrupted him. ‘Sounds good to me.’ Wild signed simply, hoping his message came across well enough.
“Yes! I’m a grandfather!” Wind cried cheerfully, much to the shock of the other Links.
“We never agreed you were blood related-” Four tried to argue, only to be shushed by Wind.
“Shut it, sonny!” Wind pointed with a glare he most likely thought was threatening.
“You have to at least put a thousand ‘greats’ in front of that grandfather title.” Warriors lectured with an amused smirk.
“No one has time for that! I’m near the end of my life and you want me to waste time on that?” Wind shot back, as if they were the ones being ludicrous.
“Wind, you’re 14-”
“I’m old!” Wind cried out. “I’m decrepit! My joints ache! My knees pop every time I bend down!” Wind rambled.
“Looks like you’re being replaced.” Legend whispered to Time, who simply glared back. He did not sound like that!
Hyrule glanced towards Wild, slightly afraid this conversation would make him upset. Finding out where you were in the timeline was… odd. It was nice to know where you stood but the answer wasn’t always happy, or it wasn’t always what you wanted. Hyrule relaxed upon seeing Wild smiling and laughing at Wind’s antics with the rest of them, only getting louder as Wind continued on. Wait, didn’t this mean Wild was a part of Time’s line? And so Twilight’s as well? Oh well, better not go there tonight.
~
“Hey Wind?” Wild questioned turning in his bed roll to face the younger boy. The others had mostly turned in, and Wind had settled next to Wild’s bed roll, causing Wild’s chest to light up with an odd warmth.
“Yeah Wild?” Wind ceased his joking tone at Wild’s serious one.
“Are you… upset? That it's me who's your potential predecessor?” Wild asked hesitantly.
“Wild we’ve talked about this-”
“No, no, not that.” Wild really did not want to get into his, what Four called, ‘self esteem issues’. “But… I’ve seen the way you all look at my ruins. Aren’t you, you know, sad, that that’s what Hyrule turned into?” There was an awkward silence and Wild as glad Sky was probably far enough away for his watch he couldn’t hear them.
“Do you remember when we first got to my Hyrule, I mean the first time with you there?” Wind asked, and Wild didn’t see how this related but let the boy continue. “And you were stunned by how much water there was. I mean the look on your face.” Wind joked, but it was stiff and dry. “I was self conscious too. Especially with the Hero of Time there, I loved visiting my home but having Time there always made me nervous. I mean I was already suspecting that he was perhaps part of my timeline. What if he found out his Hyrule, the one he worked so hard to save, was flooded during my quest?”
“That wasn’t your fault-”
“I know.” Wind interrupted Wild, with a small smile that this time seemed genuine. “Still at the time, the way you were all were still talking about how much water there was, how irritating it was to go around on boats all the time, how odd it was that there were so few land masses. It scared me, I thought they all hated what their land had become.” Wild’s eyes widened in surprise. He never even knew…
“But Time knew something was wrong, of course he did. I couldn’t tell him yet, I had to be sure. I didn’t want him to know until I knew for sure, as excited as I was to meet the Hero of Time, I was so scared what he would think of me, of my Hyrule.” Wind’s voice trailed off into a whisper, and wrestled his arm out of his bed roll and placed it on Wind’s shoulder. That’s what he was supposed to do, right? He relaxed when Wind smiled and nodded in thanks.
“What he said, it stuck with me. I told him how I felt, how the others seemed to hate my Hyrule. You know what he said?” Wild knew it was a rhetorical question, still he shook his head. “He said ‘It’s not bad, it’s different.’ I know it's simple, but he’s right. We’re just not used to each other’s Hyrules, that includes you Wild. We’re not used to ruins, or Guardians, or insane lightning storms. But the giant mushrooms you have are amazing.” They weren’t really mushrooms, but it still caused Wild to smile. “And those super tall islands you showed us! And your Rito have an amazing village. You know how I see it?” Wind waited for Wild to tilt his head against his bed roll. “I think our Hyrules just prove that no matter what, we’ll endure. There’s been cataclysms, great floods, calamity, but no matter what, Hyrule finds a way. That’s pretty great, don’t you think?” Huh, Wild had never thought about it in that grand of a way. He knew that the people of Hyrule, all of them, Hylian or no, were strong. But Wind put it into perspective. Wild wondered if Wind knew how good he was. Just… good. A good kid, a good hero, a good person, a good brother. Just genuinely good. Wild didn’t know how to say that, especially without sounding patronizing, so he settled for something else.
“You’re right Wind, thank you.” Wind knew the words were simple, but the emotion behind them got Wild’s point across perfectly. Wind smiled brightly.
“That’s Grandpa Wind to you.” Wild had to muffle his laughter in his bed roll.
~~~
This turned out a lot more fluffy/little angsty I hope that’s alright anon! Thank you for reading all, I hope you enjoyed!
Felinette Month Day 27
In between
Alya stared, blank-faced at the pair in front of her.
Marinette and Adrien had always had chemistry, but this was unbearable. They were just standing at the doorway of the classroom, each one offering to let the other go in first.
“You go ahead.”
“No, you, I insist.”
“Please, just-“
“Excuse me.” Felix walked in between the two without a second thought or a third word. He headed to his desk and sat down, flipping open a book and reading diligently.
Felix Culpa. The destroyer of her OTP. He was terrible, almost always introducing himself at the worst moment, never seeming to purposely do anything, but it always ruined whatever was happening between the other two.
Marinette seemed to hate him just as much, always tracking him with her eyes whenever he entered the room. Adrien was his usual oblivious self, giving Felix a grin whenever he saw him. He seemed to be making more of an effort to connect with Felix, since he and Marinette started their awkwardness. Weird.
Still, Alya was certain something had changed since last week. Marinette and Adrien had somehow become closer and more awkward simultaneously, but she expected that the two would be dating within the week.
Speaking of, the two walked in together, whispering and shooting furtive glances at the back of the room, where Felix sat. Clearly they had noticed his tendency to ruin their moments.
They slid into the front desk, Marinette shooting Alya an apologetic glance that she waved off with a knowing smile. If the lovebirds wanted to spend more time with each other, who was she to stop them?
Felix was avoiding her. She just knew it.
Ever since Team Builder, she and her two partners had been out of it. She and Adrien were getting to know each other anew, but Felix seemed insistent on never looking at them directly again.
Team Builder was the coach of a failing baseball team. She wanted the all teams to be honest with each other and share deep secrets to become a closer team. Her first target was her baseball team.
Her second was the group of three heroes.
After working through the trust-building obstacle course with ease, they reached the truth telling stage.
Some of the questions weren’t so bad, even things they’d talked about before.
“What is your greatest fear?”
“Who on the team do you trust most?”
“What is your greatest pet peeve?”
Easy answers, with little opportunity to hurt anyone, even the question about trust. Both of the boys said they trusted her most, and she begrudgingly revealed that she trusted Chat Noir more. Apidae faux pouted for a moment, but admitted that he expected that would be the case.
It was around “who is your crush?” that things started going downhill.
Chat Noir opened his mouth, probably to proclaim his “undying adoration” for her yet again, but choked.
“What’s wrong?” She had teased. “Cat got your tongue?”
“My L- M- Mi. Kagami Tsurugi.” The words sounded normal, albeit strangled, but his face showed that he did not intend for them to come out.
Apidae was next. He stepped forward, breathed in deep, and said without a waver in his tone.
“Marinette Dupain-Cheng.”
She didn’t say a word. She couldn’t. What could she say?
On her turn, she walked up, ready to spill her guts on her crush on Adrien, but the words wouldn’t come out.
“A- Adri- Apidae.” No. That wasn’t it. What was happening? Was this how Chat Noir felt?
Apidae coughed as the doors opened to the next level. Neither of them looked at each other as Chat Noir bounded ahead of them to what looked like the final stage.
“Welcome! You have proven yourselves to be a secure and trusting team. With this final push you will become the perfect team!”
Apidae snorted. “What? No, let me guess. You’re going to take our miraculouses and force us to reveal our identities to each other, so our final walls are down.”
“You’re close!” She waved her hand and chains appeared on their wrists. “I’m not giving Hawkmoth anything until he proves he can be a team player with his blue belle. But I’m also not giving you the chance to fight me until you prove yourselves. So here’s your final question; what is your true identity?”
Chat Noir grunted, shifting against the chains. “I’m not saying a- Adrien Agreste.”
“Chat! You’re Adrien? All this tim- Marinette Dupain-Cheng.”
Apidae made a startled sound. “We don’t have time for this. We need to stop her. Now.”
“How aren’t you saying it?” Ladybug glanced at him as Chat- Adrien used his cataclysm to destroy their chains.
“I’m not using the initial sound in my name.” He said simply, though it was clear that he was struggling with his words.
It was a difficult fight, with Apidae unable to communicate to the best of his ability, Chat and Marinette awkward and embarrassed, and Team Builders ability to manipulate their environment.
Apidae tried to use his venom, but it was blocked, and they were left with less than five minutes before she would be fighting alone.
And soon she was. Chat Noir detransformed to reveal Adrien, who, while athletic, did not have miraculous armor to protect him from the blow. He was knocked prone against a wall, and stayed crumpled there.
A minute later, Apidae detransformed too, revealing the crush she didn’t even know she had until then to be Felix Culpa. Felix still stood, weaving around every attack, using one of the still-intact chains to hold her.
“Ladybug. Lucky Charm. Now.” He struggled for hold her, only barely containing Team Builder.
“Right. Lucky Charm!” She threw her yo-yo and was met with a baseball bat. She knew what had to be done. She gave Felix a look and he nodded.
Team Builder broke free of his hold and knocked him aside, not hard enough to knock him unconscious.
Marinette distracted her by asking about her batting form as he got back up and crept behind her.
Like a well-oiled machine, she tossed the baseball bat to him as he leapt up, he caught it and swung it into Team Builder’s head, just barely fracturing her helmet. A fracture was all that was needed for the akuma to crawl out and get purified.
She tossed her miraculous cure, and waved for Felix and Adrien to scramble away as she knelt by the dazed coach.
“Are you alright, ma’am?”
“Yes, I think so, but I can’t remember anything.” She looked up at her with horrified eyes. “Was I akumatized?”
“I’m afraid so, but you didn’t do much harm.” Her miraculous beeped and she waved a goodbye before swinging away, catching Felix’s eye as she left.
They hadn’t talked since then. She and Adrien had taken every opportunity to talk to him and he made every excuse not to.
“Enough is enough.” She hissed at Adrien, during quiet reading time. “We need to talk to him now.”
“So you two can talk about your crush?” He teased with a grin.
“Not just that!” She felt her ears turning red.
“But mostly that.” He gave her a kind look. “Just let me handle it. You go stand by your locker after class.”
“Okay.” The rest of the class was spent on trivial topics, jokes, and planning fo make it easier to slip away during akuma fights.
She left to go to her locker after class, Adrien shooting her a wink as he walked purposefully towards Felix.
A few minutes later and she was at her locker, in the crowded room, staring at the doors waiting for Felix (and Adrien too, of course).
Suddenly, the doors slammed open to reveal Adrien, carrying a struggling Felix over his shoulder.
“Adrien, I swear to-“
“Yeah, yeah. We need to have a conversation, and you have to deal with it.” He commented with an east smile.
He set Felix down in front of her, restraining him in a hug.
“I do want to talk, but in front of so many people?” She glanced at Adrien, then the room.
It was deserted. In the few minutes she had been distracted, Alya has shuttled everyone out of the room, shooting her a wink and a thumbs up before exiting herself.
“Never mind then.”
“Sir please.” A squeak came from Felix’s bag. “I’d like to see Tikki and Plagg. Just for a moment?” An adorable yellow head gave him puppy-dog eyes.
“Fine.” She squealed and flew out, hugging his cheek and dive bombing Adrien’s bag. “But I want it clear that I’m doing this for Pollen.”
“Noted.” Adrien cautiously released Felix.
“So, what needs to be said? I feel that there’s nothing to be resolved.”
“I beg to differ.” Marinette took a step forwards, fully aware of how close her face was to his. “I think we have quite a lot to talk about. Like your crush on me.”
“You mean our mutual crush on each other.” His eyes bore into hers and she stepped back, rubbing her neck.
“Y-yeah. So...”
Adrien waved his hand. “I’m gonna step out and let you two handle this.”
Once he was gone, Marinette sat down, putting her head in her hands.
“I have a crush on you. You had a crush on me.” She murmured. “What else for you want me to say?”
“Well, ‘yes’ would be a nice start.” His feet shifted.
“Huh?” She peered up at him. His face was absolutely crimson.
He coughed a pulled out a crumbled sheet of paper. “Marinette Dupain-Cheng,” he glanced at her, “when I first saw you, I thought you were immature, and preppy.
Then I actually had a conversation with you and I was proven exactly right.”
She made a little sound of dissent.
“But accompanying your immaturity and preppiness, was a deep compassion, and an impeccable fashion sense. I fell for you and kept falling with every day I spent in your presence. So, Marinette Dupain-Cheng, will you go on a date with me?”
She stared at him.
“This is why I made the request that you say yes.” He whispered.
“Oh!” She straightened. “Right.”
“So...”
“Of course.” She beamed and lunged for him, hugging him as tight as she could.
“Finally!” Adrien shouted from the hallway.
“Finally.” Felix whispered into her hair.
The Five Minute Adventures of Snake Noir: Ch 5 - Unwanted Revelations
Chapter 1: I Want It To Be You
Chapter 2: Best Friends
Chapter 3: Best Laid Plans
Chapter 4: A Thank You
Chapter 5: Unwanted Revelations
“You okay, dude?” Nino asked. They were sitting on his bed, watching an anime, but Adrien had no idea what was happening in the current episode.
Adrien’s head shot up from where his cheek had been pressed into his propped up knee.
“Yeah, of course,” Adrien said. “Why wouldn’t I be?”
Nino frowned, and paused the show. “You’ve just been quiet tonight.
“I’m just tired,” Adrien said, which was mostly true. “The photo shoot this morning went seven ways to hell after it was disrupted by that akuma.”
“That akuma sucked!” Nino said.
Adrien nodded in agreement. It had taken Ladybug, Chat Noir, and five temp heroes (Carapace included) hours to deal with. “And once it was cleared up, father insisted the shoot continue even though we had already lost our lighting. Then afterwards he lectured me for an hour about not being professional enough because none of the shots came out to his satisfaction.”
Adrien trailed off, noticing that Nino had his lips pressed tightly closed.
“It’s not that big of a deal,” Adrien said.
Which had been the wrong thing to say. Adrien knew it as soon as the words left his mouth.
“Not that big a deal?!” Nino repeated. “Dude, he runs you ragged, doesn’t let you have any fun, puts you in situations where it is literally impossible to succeed, and then he yells at you when you fail.”
“He doesn’t yell,” Adrien defended.
“I don’t know why you defend him!”
Adrien shrugged. “He’s my father.”
“Is he? Seems more like he’s your boss.”
Adrien sagged on the floor, and Nino wilted a second later.
“I’m sorry, dude. I don’t mean to make you feel worse. He just… makes me so angry!”
Adrien smiled then. “It feels good to have you on my side.”
“How would you feel about me borrowing the Snake?” Nino asked, casually.
Read on Ao3
Adrien started, sitting up straight. “What?!”
“I mean, I just want to punch him in the face. Just once, dude, I swear. But I’d prefer not to get thrown in jail with my future career destroyed because your old man is vengeful.”
Adrien burst out laughing. “I’d pay to see it actually.”
Nino smiled and bumped his shoulder into Adrien’s. Adrien’s laughter died down, but his smile remained.
But Nino looked solemn. Adrien frowned and leaned forward. “Are you okay?”
Nino smiled. “Yeah, I was just thinking. Have you ever thought about using the Snake to confront your father?”
“No,” Adrien admitted. “I am trying not to use it for selfish reasons.”
Nino rolled his eyes.
“What would I even say to him?” Adrien cleared his throat. “Hello Father! I bend over backwards to meet your expectations, but they’re impossible to reach. I want you to show me the same respect you expect me to show you.” Adrien shook his head. “What would be the point? He won’t remember, so nothing will change.”
Nino stared at a Jagged Stone poster across the room. “I just… wonder sometimes if he even knows how much he’s hurt you. Confronting him might tell you that.”
Adrien was silent for a long time.
“Dri?”
Adrien looked up at Nino’s concerned gaze, and then turned away again. “I just…” Adrien said. “What if the answer is he does know? And… doesn’t care?”
Nino wrapped him in a hug at that moment, and Adrien let his cheek fall onto Nino’s shoulder.
It had been easy to visit Nino and Marinette with the Snake Miraculous. Adrien knew that they cared about him. In fact, he had known they had cared about him on both sides of his mask. If anything, he had underestimated how much affection and love they held for him. So he hadn’t been afraid of anything that might come out in a conversation with them that they couldn’t remember. He knew he’d still hold them in the highest regard.
But with his father, if he learned something he didn’t like - that his father didn’t care about him, rather than was just abrasive and uncomfortable with feelings and affection - Adrien didn’t know if he would be able to keep up the song and dance routine required to keep his father happy. Adrien wanted to keep what little freedoms he had managed to squirrel away. He couldn’t stand it if they were taken away. He was terrified he wouldn’t survive it.
On some days, he knew he was too close to not almost wanting to survive it.
It was too easy to throw himself in front of an akuma’s blast, too easy to picture his own bubbling cataclysm floating towards his chest without concern.
But things had gotten better, were continuing to get better. Thanks to Nino mostly, and to Ladybug, too.
“Have you ever used the snake with anyone besides me?” Nino asked, interrupting Adrien’s thoughts.
Adrien didn’t want to mention Marinette. He knew Marinette wouldn’t have minded, and Nino would have listened without judgement. But it felt weird to tell Nino something about Marinette that she herself didn’t remember.
“Ladybug picked me to use the snake against Desperada,” he confided instead.
“You’re Viperion, too?!”
Adrien winced. “No, I was Aspik, but… it didn’t go well, and I eventually gave it up, and she selected someone else to be the snake. That person is Viperion.”
Nino looked at him suspiciously. “How long did you stay in the loop before you gave up?”
Adrien rubbed the back of his neck. “Umm… like three months?”
Nino bolted to his feet. “Months?! Dude! You need to stop torturing yourself!”
“I just… wanted to impress her as myself. She’s already said no to Chat Noir. I was hoping… that being Adrien was a…”
“Second chance?” Nino filled in sarcastically.
Adrien grinned. “Exactly! But… she needed a temp hero in the first place because the two of us weren’t enough. So… I had to give it back, and tell her to find someone else. I feared that Adrien was only a disappointment to her.”
“You tried for months! What more could she ask of you than that?” Nino pursed his lips. “Like how many loops is that?”
“25,912.”
Nino’s eyes widened, and he just stared at him until Adrien had to look away.
“Didn’t you lose count?”
Adrien shook his head. “The snake doesn’t let you forget the number. You know every time what loop you’re on.”
Nino was really solemn after that. “I think that power is the scariest of them all,” he said quietly.
“Scarier than the power of destruction?” Adrien teased, trying to lighten the mood again.
“Yes,” Nino said seriously, not taking the hint.
Adrien sighed. “What was the hardest akuma for you as Carapace?”
“As Carapace?! I was fighting Anansi as Nino while you were caught in some spider web! That was terrifying.”
“You were a natural with the baton,” Adrien said.
Nino ducked his head down - trying to hide a blush.
“I was really threatened by it at the time,” Adrien admitted.
Nino’s gaze snapped back up. “Threatened?! By me?”
“I… It felt like Ladybug was trying to replace me.”
Nino shook his head. “She was trying to save you, dude!”
“It kinda feels like she’s trying to replace me now, too.”
Nino frowned. “What do you mean?”
“She told someone else her identity. And yeah, she explained why she couldn’t tell me so it’s easier to accept now. But Nino, I’ve been sidelined so many times recently. Rena Rouge removed me from the battlefield when Style Queen attacked. I was so far away that by the time I got back…” he trailed off, his brain spiraling rapidly.
“Dude?”
“Rena Rouge told me not to interfere with SentiBubbler, too.”
“I’m sure she didn’t mean to push you aside like that. Alya loves you both as heroes. You should hear her fangirl about working with both of you.”
But Adrien wasn’t hearing Nino anymore. Rena Rouge knew a lot - more than any of the other temp heroes. She had made plans with Ladybug before Ladybug had even shown up.
Rena Rouge was the one that knew Ladybug’s identity.
But Rena Rouge was Alya.
Ladybug had said she told her best friend in her civilian life.
That meant…
Adrien couldn’t breathe.
“Adrien? What’s wrong?” Nino asked, urgently.
But Adrien couldn’t answer. All he felt was horror and dread writhing sickenly in his gut. This was knowledge he wasn’t supposed to know.
He was the one person that wasn’t supposed to know.
But it fit and he couldn’t unknow it. Marinette had… she had burst into tears upon learning his identity just like Ladybug. She had ranted and railed in anger that Ladybug hadn’t realized how hurt her partner had been by her actions. She hadn’t been angry with Ladybug - she had been angry with herself. And then, she had erased her own memory when he had hesitated because they weren’t supposed to know.
He was going to throw up.
“Dude! Talk to me!” Nino begged, tapping either one of Adrien’s cheeks.
Adrien turned toward his friend, but his eyes looked past him, remaining unfocused.
“Plagg! Sass! Help!” Nino called.
The kwamis flew into his line of sight, and conversed together briefly. Adrien heard none of it.
His body was trembling - shaking so hard it was amazing he hadn’t fallen off the edge of Nino’s bed. Though that might have had to do with the hand clamped painfully onto his shoulder bracing him from tipping over. Hot tears fell from his cheeks and his chest burned. He clawed for air that refused to come.
“Kid,” Plagg called. “Slow down. You’re okay. Nothing’s happened yet.”
“I-I’m n-n-not supposed t-t-to know,” Adrien managed to get out between the body quakes. He had always wanted to know. And Marinette, she was amazing! She always had been. He wanted to be ecstatic at the revelation. “I don’t w-w-w-want to destroy the world.”
Ladybug had said the moon was in pieces.
“And if you get akumatized right now over it, it will be a self fulfilling prophecy!” Plagg snapped. “Now breathe properly already!”
“Dude!” Nino chastised. “That’s not how you calm someone down during a panic attack.”
“I’d like to see you do better,” Plagg challenged.
But Nino was already ignoring the kwami. “Dri, breathe in with me.” And then he slowly and dramatically breathed in.
Adrien tried to follow suit. Really, he did. He took in a slow deep breath, but then his throat would lodge close again, and he’d start gasping again. His chest spasmed painfully.
“Can you reset the last five minutes?” Nino asked Sass.
The kwami shook his head. “It’s very dangerous for me to use my power without a holder to limit them. It's not worth the cost,” Sass informed. “He already knew everything needed to put it together. He just hadn’t thought about it. We can reset… maybe… without destroying the timeline completely, but he’ll just figure it out again probably within a few days. Plagg and I knew it was only a matter of time.”
“Some warning would have been nice!” Adrien shrieked, his anger cutting through the shaking, but only for a second.
“Look kid, we don’t know that this is the end of the world. And honestly, it probably isn’t!”
Adrien’s green eyes locked onto the floating kwami. “What do you mean?”
Plagg turned to Sass. “You explain it.”
“My power works differently than Fluff’sss, but from my understanding, the end of the world probably had very little to do with you knowing each other's identities. It was more like that it was an event that was easy to change to prevent a certain series of events. It wasn’t necessarily that you couldn’t know one another. Just that you couldn't know that day.”
“Why didn’t you say any of this before?” Adrien gasped out. He was still struggling to keep his breathing slow.
Sass shrugged. “Because we don’t know for certain what happened, and anything short of a guarantee wouldn’t have been enough for Ladybug.”
“Look!” Plagg interjected. “If things truly go to absolute hell and back, Fluff’s holder will most likely show up to fix things again, and since she’s not already here, we’re likely fine.”
The tension in Adrien’s chest broke, and the rest of his body slumped. Luckily, Nino was there to catch him. Adrien clung to his shoulder even as he tried to face the kwamis. As always, Nino was a rock. If he was phased at all, Nino wasn’t showing it.
Adrien was dripping with sweat, his blond hair was plastered to the sides of his face. He could breathe now, and breathe heavily he did, still leaning heavily on Nino.
“So, what do we do?” Adrien asked.
Plagg shrugged. “Use the snake to tell Ladybug you figured her out. Then come up with a plan together. She’s a crafty one. She’ll have ideas.”
Sass nodded. “Most likely, she will know more than she’s told you, Chat Noir. She may have a better idea of what needs to be avoided.”
Adrien nodded. “Okay, okay. We can do this.” He turned to Nino. “Help me stand?”
Nino held out his arms, and Adrien hauled himself to his feet with Nino’s support.
“I’m sorry to cut our illicit slumber party short,” Adrien said.
Nino shook his head. “No worries, dude. Fate of the world stuff obviously should come first. But… umm… are you going to be okay running over rooftops? No offense, but… you look like shit.”
“Plagg, claws out,” Adrien called. As the transformation washed over him, Adrien could stand up straight, breathe easier. He sighed in relief. “With the transformation, I’m okay.”
“Can you let me know when you get somewhere safe and outside a time loop, dude?”
Adrien smiled. “Yeah, sure.” Adrien pulled his baton from his back. “And Nino?”
“Yeah?”
“Thank you for being here. Thank you for not asking questions.”
Nino smiled. “Of course, dude. Anytime.”
…
Marinette wasn’t on her balcony, but her light was on. He couldn’t handle waiting so he sent Sass through the window. She was up on the roof less than a minute later.
“Chaton? What’s wrong?”
He transformed with the snake and activated second chance immediately, and then fell heavily onto the only chair on her balcony.
“You shouldn’t have let me keep the snake,” he began without preamble.
“What are you talking about?” she demanded, but her eyes were wide.
“We don’t have time for you to try to misdirect me. It’s too late, m’lady.”
She wilted. “How? Did you try to figure it out?”
He shook his head. “No. I just…” His fingers tried to tear through his hair, only to find the suit draped over his skull. “You told me to tell someone. So I did. I told my best friend. Only he turned out to be a temp hero. He slipped. He thought I knew who he was when Chat Noir showed up in his room. It’s not his fault.”
“Breathe, kitty.”
He took in a shuddering breath, but he was still shaky. The panic was starting to grip him again, and he was trying to keep it from exploding, but he knew he was slowly losing the battle.
She crouched down in front of him and held his hands.
And he barreled forward in the story. “Then because I knew his identity, I later realized who Rena Rouge was. And I know that you never told me that she was the one that you revealed your identity to, but… she just… knows too much. And I know who Alya’s best friend is. I swear I never meant to figure it out!”
And he couldn’t breathe. “I can’t… m’lady, please. I’m so scared.” He broke off as the sobs overtook him again.
She held him, stroked his head and neck with calming hands, and whispered nonsensical soothing sounds into his ears. He leaned into her comfort, into her warmth, fighting to collect himself. He needed to get enough out so she could tell him what to do. How to fix this. Because he didn’t want to be akumatized and he didn't want the world to end. Especially not by his hand.
“Tell me what to do,” he sobbed.
“Who’s your best friend?” she asked.
“Nino.”
He felt her sharp intake of breath.
“Please don’t start crying,” he begged. “You always cry when I tell you.”
“It’s too late, Adrien,” she whispered. And when he looked up her eyes were already filled with tears.
“Please tell me you have an idea,” he begged.
She took up his hands and squeezed them tight as she kneeled in front of him again. “You’re not going to like it.”
He snorted through his tears. “That’s a given.”
“You’re going to go back and you’re going to pretend you don’t know.”
He sucked in another breath and he closed his eyes against her words. “How do you expect me to do that?”
“You’re clearly a very good actor,” she said gently.
And he crumpled in on himself at her words. His head fell into their joined hands as his body shook in an emotional earthquake.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered, continuing to stroke his head. “I wish it was different. I wish I wasn’t placing this burden solely on you. That I wasn’t asking you to put on mask after mask. You shouldn’t have to.”
“I just… why, do you need me to pretend? How does that help us?”
“Nothing can change between Ladybug and Chat Noir.”
He felt himself nod though he wasn’t sure if he could ever pull that off. He felt like his whole world had been thrown out of orbit.
“And nothing can change between Adrien and his very good friend, Marinette. You understand?”
And suddenly, he did.
“We can’t date,” he concluded.
She nodded. “We can’t date. Knowing who you are… it’s clear to me that it wasn’t the reveal that was the problem. It was that our reveal led to us dating.”
“Wh-What? What does that have to do with anything?” He asked.
“We can’t date. You have to pretend like you don’t know. Can you do that for me, kitty? Can you wait until Hawkmoth has been defeated?”
“I uh… wait?”
“I love you,” she confessed.
And he stared at her in shock. She loved him?
“And you love me. But our love… it destroys the world.”
Her words hit him like a never ending monsoon. He felt thrown about, twisted up, and torn into pieces all at once.
“What?” he hissed.
“That’s what Chat Blanc told me. I didn’t know you were Adrien. Adrien was the person who learned my identity that day, but it was Chat Noir who knew. And Chat Blanc… he said it was our love.”
He shook his head even as he cried. “No, no, Mari, I refuse to believe it.”
“I still have nightmares of the place. Of you alone, and half insane.” Her hands cradled either side of his face.
He kissed the palm of one of her hands.
“Mari, please,” he begged. “Don’t make me pretend with you.”
She kissed him. Hard. He felt dizzy.
She pulled away and smiled. “Figure I owe you a kiss that you will remember.”
Then the world blurred around him. God damn her! This was how she knew how the snake worked in the first place, knew how to activate it when she had him distracted. She was the fucking guardian.
He was standing again. He collapsed into the chair again and just continued to cry.
“Chaton? What the hell happened? Why are you always crying on the other side of one of your loops? How awful am I to you?”
His arms snaked around her midriff, and he pulled her against him. And just sobbed into her stomach.
“You’re not awful, Mari. You’re amazing.”
And he loved her.
Her fingers ran over his head and cat ears, causing them to flick back and forth.
He spent the whole loop crying, and the next one after that. But he recovered faster than he did with Nino that first night with the snake. It only took four loops before he got ahold of himself. Maybe he was  getting better at coping with world-ending fear and grief. Or maybe it’s because his lady is just a little bit more soothing to him, as awesome as his best friend was.
Now, he just felt numb.
And exhausted.
“How many loops have you been through?” she asked softly.
“Five”
“What can I do?” she asked.
“M’lady, you’re already doing it.”
She stiffened at the endearment. He holds her to him harder. “I know have to pretend that nothing has changed. I have to wear a mask around you all the time. Every moment of every day as Chat Noir and every day as Adrien, and I know that I’ll get really good at it. It’s something I’ve done a million times before. But let me have an extra loop or two okay?”
He can feel her shaking as suddenly she’s crying too.
“I just… I’m scared,” he confessed. “I don’t know how long we’ll have to do this. I don’t know if I’ll remember how to take the walls down when it’s over. Will I even know who I am?” He squeezed her tighter. “And… I don’t know if you’ll wait for me without knowing,” he whispered.
She was caressing the sides of his face in gentle soothing strokes. Tears streamed from her eyes.
“You’re so amazing!” she told him. “So resilient, and so much stronger than me.”
He barked a broken laugh that held no humor. “You’re wrong. I’m so broken. I’ve been so tempted so many times to just break the loop and let you remember.”
“But you haven’t.”
“You’re usually the one that resets it once everything comes out.”
She kneels down at eye level with him. “You’re my strength, Chaton. My ability to reset the loop is to keep you safe. And no one else. I love you so much.”
“I love you, too, m’lady.”
She moved forward to kiss him and he pulled back. She frowned.
“Please don’t,” he begged.
“Why not?”
“Because there’s already too many kisses that we can’t remember. I want us both to remember them.”
“Chaton, if you feel that way strongly, I can respect it. But if you’re afraid of forgetting what it feels like to be yourself, I want you to feel it, to remember it every single day. You should always know what it means to not have to wear masks. What it means to be loved.”
“Every single day?” he repeated.
She nodded firmly. “Every single day.”
“What about not abusing the miraculous?”
“Abuse it,” she said. “I don’t care. You’re more important.”
He was speechless.
So when she leaned in again, he let his eyes fall closed. Let her press her lips gently against his own. His whole body melted into the contact like butter. He kissed her like it was the first time and like it was the last time, because in a way… it was.
They stayed together - sharing their life’s breath, letting their mouths and tongues dance together in sync the way Ladybug and Chat Noir always were. They didn’t stop. Eventually, the world blurred, and he realized she had reset the time loop herself again.
But this time he was smiling when he found himself standing on her balcony once again peering into her concerned blue eyes.
This time he felt lighter and freer. She loved him. And he loved her.
And they would be together someday.
He had to believe that.
