How did you end in this hell place was a thing you could never understand completly.
When did you end up in deep debts? Having to deal with mafia sharks who followed you everywhere.
When this oporunity came, the chance to get out of your debt, you took it without a second thought.
Oh big mistake.
Now here you were, playing for your life.
But even in the darkest place there was something good.
One guard took a liking in you. Giving you extra portions of food. Letting you go to the bathroom anytime you needed.
Jun Ho was enamored by you, the moment he saw you coming out from the first game, covered in sweat and being agitated he knew all his work payed off.
Because yes, he was the one who followed you, stalked you and made you end in debt. Using his contacts in the police, banks and mafia to made you a target for the games.
And it worked. Now he could be close to you, take you forcefully by your arm, pull you close to his body with the excuse of just doing his work.
Of course he also gave you small advantages. Extra food, information, water, free pass to the batrhooom where you usually cried or touched yourself to realse some frustration.
Oh these were his favorite moments, listening to your moans and whimpers. It took all of his self control to not go in there and fuck you just like you needed.
He would return to his room and touch himself, not caring about the cameras.
His hand moved fast over his dick, he tested the tip of his head and moaned thinking it was you. You between his legs taking him deep, with your eyes full of tears but no stoping because you wanted him, you needed him. He came hard, his mind attacking him with images of you with your hand covering your mouth while he fuck you against the wall.
Well fuck. He is hard again.
The next night you wake up with the need to pee. You slowly go to the door wishing its the same guard who gives you free pass everynight. And it is, Jun Ho sees you and does not even let you talk. He soon opens the door to let you in and makes you follow him to the bathroom.
The situation its bizarre, you know it. Most players think you are fucking him but thats not it....
Well it was not till tonight.
Your back is pressed against the wall, the cold surface its a big contrast with his heat, his lips are on yours, the kiss is savage. Jun Ho does not let any part of your mouth without being explored, he then kisses your neck, making sure to bite you and mark you.
He has seen how others look at you.
But you are his.
He feels your knee touching his dick, he moans your name and you dont care how the knows it.
You use one hand to touch him above his clothes making him groan, he sees the desesperation in your eyes and the need.
He cant wait.
He knows he is big, he knows you are not fully wet, but this cant be done slow, once he has his dick out he pulls your pants and underwear down making you strip out of them so he can take your underwear for his personal use later.
Without a problem he pulls you up making you go down taking his hard dick. It hurts a lot he can tell by your face and by how much pressure you are putting in his shoulders.
"Shh, shh it will pass, you are taking me so well"
He starts to move without a warning, you can feel all of his dick going deep inside, your walls being forcefully put apart, you beg him to slow down but he does not listen, soon he has you screaming at him with how much force and how fast he is going. You can feel his pre cum inside of you mixing with your own juices and god it does feel good.
Jun Ho kisses you, telling you how good you feel, how he wants you to be pregnat with his kids and see you outside the games. How he wants to take you back to the other players and fuck you in all fours in front of them to show them to who you belong to.
You are not sure what makes you lose yourself but your walls hug his dick and Jun Ho thinks he is in heaven. His moves become erratic, he feels is orgasm aproaching and when he sees you being in the same state as him he cant stop.
He ends cumming inside, you havent feel so full in a long time and you love it. You love the feeling of his cum inside, how parts of it go outside from your pussy and down your legs.
"Fuck, you did so well, love"

“Is this okay, Daddy?” You spoke in a pouty voice once you tied his hands to the headboard. Tom could only respond with a grunt a small twirl from his head on the pillow. You grinned and move backwards to straddle his clothed hips.
He’s only wearing a dress pants that each seconds underneath them grows a tent. You clicked you tongue before you lean forward to place a kiss on his cheek, before going down to his neck. Teasing, biting, and tongue twirling, Tom loves it when you do that. He’s got a thing for neck kisses, same as you.
“Urgh.. Baby..” Tom grunted when he felt your hips made a movement, front and back, slowly rubbing your clothed pussy against his bulge. You hummed, before you pushed yourself off from his chest and placed your hands on top of him, proceeding your movements.
With your eyes closed, your bottom lip drew in between your teeth, you’re taking your sweet time dry humping against his bulge that seemed to never stopped growing and gets harder by each seconds if that’s possible.
“Mmh.. Daddy, it feels so good going like this..” You moaned, and boy Tom wished that he could watch the whole thing. He loves having you on top of him but having you in control? It’s save to say that this is your premiere.
Your sex life and his is always full of experiment, tonight you softly asked him if you could take a turn in choosing what should you both try in bed, and you chose that you wanted him tied to the bed, blindfolded. At first, he refused, but somehow you got him into doing it anyway. And boy, do you like this one or not? You love it. Being in control gave you some kind of confidence, especially seeing your beloved being hopeless underneath you.
“Baby.. Please..” Tom desperately sighed, his hands gripping the ties. You raised your eyebrows with a smirk, a new idea pops up in your mind. Digging your knees to the cushion, pushing you off from his lap, you rip off the thin fabric of your lace red panties before climbing on top to his face. Tom sensed this but decides not to say a word as he’d like to hear what you wanted to say,
“Open up, daddy..” With a smirk on your face you watched the way he unclenched his jaw and pushed his mouth open, his wet tongue sticking out as that is your cue to set your wet cunt to meet his warm tongue.
“Oh, daddy..” You moaned, throwing your head back, mouth hangs open. Tom gave your clit the attention that she needs, lapping you up like a dog drinking its water. You grind your hips to give more friction to yourself. “Mmhh.. That’s it, just like that Daddy.. Oh! You’re such a good boy, daddy..” You grinned.
His mouth is a godsend. The way his tongue even tease your hole, licking and sucking your cunt. You couldn’t hold yourself much longer, and Tom sensed this from the way your thighs vibrates at a time. You suddenly push yourself off from his face with a moan,
“Ah! Not now Daddy, I wanna cum on your cock.” You grunted, hurrying yourself back to his legs as you roughly pull his pants down. His cock sprung free, slapping his abdomen before he stood tall like a mighty soldier. Tom groaned in relief, his chest heaves as you watched in awe.
Eyes set on the tall and thick prize.
You lick your lips before you grab his cock as your warm mouth wrapped around just the tip. You hummed, your tongue grazed against the slit, wiping off the pre-cum. Soon, you’re bobbing your head up and down his shaft earning a deep moan of relief from him.
“Ahh… Yes, baby.. Mm.. You’re doing great..” Tom moaned, his hands gripping the ties hard. He wished they were gripping your hair. He lifted his hips softly, just to do a soft thrusts here and there, in each thrust he would let out hums which made you wetter.
There’s just something about listening to men moans and hums to pleasure.
You could tell he’s getting close from the way the soft thrusts turns into almost fucking your mouth, you gave one last bob before popping him out of your mouth. Tom grunted, his thighs shook a little bit.
“Baby..”
“I get to cum first daddy. I’m gonna use this cock as my toy.” You whispered in his ear whilst guiding his cock against your entrance before pushing the tip towards your hole.
Tom couldn’t watch you bounce on top of his cock, Tom couldn’t grope and play with your bouncing breasts from each lifts from your hips. He could only feel your tight cunt that is sucking in his cock—pussy so tight it feels like his cock was being sucked into a vacuum machine. He could only listen to your pretty and whiney moans. Oh, did you say the dirtiest words ever?
“Oooh… Daddy your cock feels so good..”
“Mmhh.. I love fucking your cock Daddy..”
“Yeah.. Yeah.. Yeah.. Daddy..”
Tom bites his bottom lips so hard it drew out blood. You kissed his lips, rough. His tongue fighting with yours, your hips never stop slamming your pussy to his cock up and down.
“Mmhh.. Yeah Daddy, I’m gonna cum.. I’m gonna cum..” You chanted and chanted in his ear before you released yourself off on his cock. Hips still moving, slowly riding your orgasm out.
“Daddy, that felt so good.. But you should totally cum too.” You whispered and smirk in his ear before you tear off the blindfold from him.
Tom adjusted his vision as it became clearer, he saw your tits wiggling due to the movement that you caused from your arms trying to rip off the ties on his hands. His cock never leaving your warm pussy, and once his hands are finally off from the headboard, he gripped your hips and roughly slammed you down to his cock resulting a loud gasp coming out from lips.
“It’s Daddy’s turn now, and Daddy’s gonna fill this cunt up with his warm seeds.”

hello everyone :) I'm Corvid/Icarus/Shark, pronouns they/them!! Tone tags appreciated!!! Artist and writer, working on fics :D I don't have one main fandom I have FOUR do you like plastic ninja and turtle ninja and Minecraft block men because boy I do (Ninjago, ROTTMNT (I don't really know any other version I'm sorry guys), Life Series, Hermitcraft) I also really like Dreamzzz but I've just started that series so I have less feelings about it /lh Do YOU like silly little aus about Ninjago and Rise because I have many if you're interested I have a list I'll put them under the read more with their name, tags, and a short description :) ITS LONG IM SORRY LMAO Also yes there is shipping in some of these, not really in any of the Rise aus but in the Ninjago aus there's some, most of the time it doesn't really affect most of the story but I'll mention if it does
RISE OF THE TMNT
Initium Novum (#inau) Told from the perspective of an OC (lost turtle sibling called Masaccio (Acie)), takes place during the show and has a lot of other OCs in it if that's not your jam
What Do You Do When You Fall Into Heaven? (#fihau) Told from multiple perspectives, takes place during/after the movie and is a hurt/comfort. The same cast as Initium Novum, with some additions :) I really wanted to write the future guys man they all show up at some point
Who's That Hamato? (#wthau) Kind of an au of Initium Novum, it's what if Acie was also taken in by Splinter. Explores a different facet of them, explores how their relationships would be different in a different situation.
We Have Got To Stop Meeting New People Like This (#snpau) Another Initium Novum/WDYDWYFIH au but this one's Ninjago :) Similar to House of the Rising Sun (Shells) in that the Merge caused their world to join the Merged Realms, they all explore this new world and Acie gets to go nuts.
Boys of Summer (#bosau) Non-OC au, it's another separated au throw the confetti throw the sparkles- Leo focused, he's still with Splinter but Draxum is there as well and has been redeemed, the others found their own ways out of the lab and ended up in different places.
Rise from the Dead (#rftdau) Non-OC au, puts a ghostly spin on the story. The turtles are all ghosts that only April can see. There's no yokai and no mystics, but multiple yokai characters are still in the story, just as humans.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Critters (#tmncau) Sort of Minecraft au but not really, I just really really love the fanon Minecraft hybrids so I made the turtles into them :). They're mutants still but they've got distinctly Minecraft hybrid traits I've put sooo much thought into the traits for all the different hybrids it's so fun
Shell From Another Realm (#sfarau) A Rise/Ninjago crossover au, takes place post-Rise movie and post-Crystalized pre-Dragon's Rising. The turtles, April, and Casey end up in the world of Ninjago and try to find their way home while also trying to figure out this new world.
House of the Rising Sun (Shells) (#hotrsau) Another Rise/Ninjago crossover au, completely separate from the previous one in that this takes place during Dragon's Rising instead. When the Merge caused all the Realms to collide, Earth was one of them, and everyone ended up scattered across the Merged Realms. The Hamatos decide to settle in the Crossroads and meet some young faces.
NINJAGO
Some Assembly Required (#sarau) Completely rewrites the entire thing, based on the question "what if the bite from the Devourer didn't turn Garmadon evil and instead made him sick?" Garmadon is good and raising his children, the kids aren't really as in tune with their elemental powers, and I made a bunch of lore for it around the dragons and the other elemental masters please ask me about it please please /lh (has a couple ocs but not very many) (pretty shippy, a lot of poly relationships)
Web of Destiny (#wodau) Spiderman au, all six main ninja are a group of heroes, with Pixal as a vigilante. Other characters from the series feature as villains. The Dragons Rising cast also features.
The Dragon's Samurai (#tdsau) Crystalized ending rewrite, Pixal focused. Asking "what if their golden powers went haywire after they sent them to Lloyd, causing them to lose themselves? Also what if Nya got a golden form I'm so sad she didn't get one" Basically they get taken over by their powers and Pixal has to go talk some sense into them I lOVE PIXAL SO MUCH DO YOU UNDERST
Abnormal Reaction (#arau) DO YOU GUYS LIKE THE BIZARROS BECAUSE I DO this is entirely me wanting to have a Bizarro au they don't die after getting dusted they just regroup somewhere else and decide to go do their own thing after Garmadon gets defeated
A Different Vision of the Future (#advotfau) I'm lowkey embarrassed about this one lmAO it's a Genshin au,,,,, I probably won't write a fic for it like I will with the others but I wanted to draw it and explore the concept I don't even play Genshin anymore I'm crying
Ready Your Triforce, It's About To Have More Sides (#rytau) Do you guys like Breath of the Wild :) I like Breath of the Wild :) BotW/Ninjago crossover au besties they all end up in different points in time and get to interact with different pEOPLE lots of me messing around with dynamics
staring up at the sky (and hoping to see your face) (#suatsau) Veeeeery self indulgent self discovery au. Everyone but Lloyd is this almost godlike ruler of different concepts and they give him the chance to leave everything to come join them, and he has to make that decision.
Ninjas & Normies (#nanau) They're all just normal college students who like to play D&D, they each get a chance to run a campaign once they're taught how to play. Each campaign is based off a plot point or season from the show.
Departed and Service (#dasau) BASED ON Five Nights at Freddys NOT ACTUALLY A FNAF AU I don't know NEARLY enough about the fnaf lore to make an actual au with it but they're all animatronic characters from a very popular kid's TV show and Morro and Pixal are employees at their party place :) A bunch of side characters show up in this (Dragon's Rising cast also appears)
SPINJITZOON! (#spinau) It's a Splatoon au they're all having fun Ronin is basically Grizz he messes with their weapons and makes them more powerful (Dragon's Rising cast appears)
Pokemon Spin and Pokemon Whip (#pspwau) Pokemon au!!! There's two different parts to this, the first one starring Kai Nya and Lloyd, and the second starring Arin Sora Wyldfyre and Euphrasia! They all go on their adventures and in the second part Kai Nya and Lloyd see themselves in these kids and want to help them go farther
Adventures of the Dragon (#aotdau) Another D&D au but this one is them just living in a D&D fantasy style world :) silly things ensue this one's more just art than fully written story
Shapes and Colors (#sacau) Minecraft au! They're a group of friends who play on a server together and some of them are streamers and youtubers who record these sessions and put it out there for their fans, some of them do lore while some of them have no idea what's going on any of the time. Other elemental masters and Dragons Rising characters appear. (shippy, but mostly with their little characters that they made for the lore)
Lights, Camera, Action! (#lcaau) Silly actor au! Not much else to it
Song of the Sirens (#sotsau) Mermaid au, some of them are pirates and others are mermaids. Just some fun dynamics with some human/nonhuman shipping :)
Mobs of a Feather Flock Together (#moafftau) Another,, another Minecraft au this one is like Adventures of the Dragon in that they live in this world and also they're all different Minecraft hybrids I got really really into Minecraft hybrids man I just really like to draw them,,,, Dragons Rising cast is included
Ninjagoing Going Gone (#gggau) Sort of Scooby Doo-esque mystery au, kind of a blend between movieverse and showverse. Starring Arin, Sora, Wyldfyre, and Euphrasia, they're looking for the old heroes they used to hear about as kids who completely disappeared years ago. They find Lloyd and force him convince him to help them, even though he's not so sure he can.

Total Drama 9/11 2
This episode occurs in an alternate universe where Sierra was placed as a villain, and thus Alejandro was placed on the Heroes. But without Scott to bump into him, Alejandro is still in the robot. This episode takes the space of Moon Madness because I don't like it.
Heroes:
Zoey
Mike
Duncan
Cameron
Alejandro/Robot
Villains:
Gwen
Heather
Courtney
Sierra
Scott
"Alright campers, it's 9/11, and you know what that means!" Chris announces.
"What DOES it mean, Chris? Do you want us to crash planes into buildings for your stupid challenge, or something?" Heather asks, flailing her arms.
Chris stares blankly. 'Uhm, yes? Was that not clear?"
Heather stands, stunned.
"Today's episode is a homage to Season 2's 'Master of Disaster' challenge! Except this time, instead of natural disasters, they're manmade. And you're the man making them!" Chris continues. "In your teams, you will need to decide who will pilot the planes into those two towers!" Chris gestures to two cardboard cutouts emerging in Lake Wawanakwa, with an uncanny resemblance to the World Trade Centre towers that once stood mighty in a time long past.
"Easy. I'll do it." Duncan volunteers for the Heroes.
Zoey hesitates a bit, before cautiously putting her hand on Duncan's shoulder, which alarms him until he realizes who is approaching him.
"Are you sure the Robot shouldn't do it? I mean, it's not got a conscience... It's better it than you," Zoey says, with a tiny of worry.
Behind her, the faceless robot emits some sense of sadness. It's an indescribable feeling, like the sense you're being followed.
"Fat chance! I'm not being upstaged by scrap metal. Besides, its wheels couldn't accelerate on the pedals." Duncan bites back. "Besides, wouldn't want you doing it. You still need to work things out with Mike, and that means he's also out." He puts his hand on her hand that rests on his shoulder, and removed it with a smile.
"Yeah." Zoey replies. "Mike."
---
Zoey: Look, I still love Mike, but I feel like I've lost him the past few days. I feel like he's a completely different person. And Cam can't figure it out... What's a girl to do.
---
On the Villains team, there is surprisingly not as many volunteers. That is until you remember that any volunteer is volunteering to die.
"I can't do it! I'm going to be studying pre-law after summer! I've got a whole career ahead of me," Courtney hisses.
"Makes a difference from your whole shtick being a CIT, doesn't it! And why should it be me?" Heather bites.
Scott stands sheepishly, with conflicted emotions regarding both women.
"Did I say it needed to be you? Why not Gwen?" Courtney responds. "I mean, she's so self-destructive, you may as well do some good and destroy something for the good of all of us."
Gwen swallows and stands firm.
"No, I'm not doing it." Gwen confirms.
"And why not?" Heather asks.
"Because Sierra is doing it." Gwen replies.
"HAVE YOU LOST YOUR MIND?! Because I've not. What I mean is she's more of an asset of you, she knows the game, all you know is how to be a goth, sooo..." Heather says, feeling heated.
"Heh, thanks Heath..." Sierra shrugs.
"True, but you're forgetting one thing. She's exploded at point blank range of a plane once before. She did it, she survived it, we know for sure she won't die." Gwen responds. "And Sierra, this can bring your Total Drama experience full circle! This is how you can redeem yourself. You lost your chance of a million dollars and left Cody against the evil Alejandro and Heather all alone. But if you do this? Cody will for sure forgive you! It's the least you could do for him. I mean, if you didn't blow up the plane, he wouldn't have been ate by a shark, he might've even won the season!"
---
Gwen: Okay, that was evil. But it feels so good.
Sierra looks at the ground, then looks up. "Fine, I'll do it."
Sierra straps herself into the plane. Heather approaches with a sad luck.
"You don't need to do this."
"I know, but I'll survive. Chris is too cheap to buy jet fuel that'll melt steel beams."
Heather laughs. "See you on landing."
Duncan sits proudly in the plane, as Zoey approaches him.
"If Sierra can survive, so can you." Zoey reassures Duncan.
Duncan looks panicked. "It's not dying that scares me. It's losing you."
Zoey stares in shock. She pauses. "No. I need to think of Mike," she says, as she looks over towards Mal, who she is still unaware of. He is staring at the Villains team. "Even if he doesn't care about me..."
Duncan sits silently. "This is why I stepped up."
Mal, oblivious to Zoey and Duncan's conversation, notices it's Sierra of all people getting into the fighter jet.
---
Mal: Look, I don't do emotions. But I feel a kinship with Sierra. I feel like I can guide her through the darkness. She's capable of pure evil and I know it's not being nurtured on the villains team. This is why I need her in the merge. This is why I need her to stay on the ground.
---
Mal approaches Sierra's vehicle, trying to impersonate Mike. "Hey Sierra! Hope you have a great flight. Stay safe!"
Sierra raises her eyebrows. "Uh, yeah. I have everyone's records. I know you're not Mike."
"Uh, what are you on about? It's me!"
"Sure thing, Malvin."
"Don't call me that."
Sierra shrugs. "Okay, Mal. What do you want?'
"You have great potential to be a villain. You know everything about everyone and you're not embracing it! Join me in an alliance. Don't risk your life for your pathetic team. They're fake villains." Mal responds.
Sierra looks him up and down. "Yeah, no."
Mal facepalms, and begrudgingly gives her a mixtape.
"What's this?" Sierra asks.
"I wanted to give you this at merge, but there's a possibility you'll die today. So, here's some songs that make me think of you." Mal responds.
"You barely know me."
"But I understand you."
Sierra feels her chest flutter for a fleeting moment, and puts it in the cassette player of the plane.
"It better have Heathers on it." Sierra says, as she closes the window.
"What the fuck is a Heathers," Mal deflects.
"Ready... Set... Go!" Chris shouts. Sierra and Duncan race off at top speeds. Everyone realizes they could've sent their peers to their deaths. Chris is loving every second of this fucked up situation.
"It's neck and neck, who will win?! The first to hit a tower WINS!" Chris commentates.
Duncan's face is one that is hard to read. Anger, regret, sadness.
Sierra forgets she's actually competing, this is just second nature to her. However, she is curious about the mixtape.
She presses play.
"Can't we be Seventeen?
Is that so hard to do?
If you could let me in
I could be good with you."
Sierra tears up, and sings along.
"People hurt us, or they vanish
And you're right, that really blows
But we let go,
Take a deep breath
and go buy some summer clothes.
We'll go camping, play some poker
And we'll eat some chili fries
Maybe prom night
Maybe dancing,"
And with all her remaining energy, she sings the final otes perfectly, and accelerates at top speed towards the tower, overtaking Duncan:
"don't stop looking in my eyes, YOOOUUURRRRRR EEEEEYYYYYYEEEE-"
Sierra's plane hits the gap between the fake towers.
Boom.
The explosion is uneventful.
"I lined it with THAT much gunpowder for such an abysmal showing?"
"YOU DID WHAT?!" Screamed Courtney.
"Yeah, we couldn't use actual buildings so we just used gunpowder to replicate the explosion." Chris shrugs.
Cameron looks through his binoculars. "Uh guys, I can't see her. I think she was incinerated."
"Yeah, her headset's cut out. She's a goner." Chris says apathetically.
Mal looks on, upset, both fists clenched.
Despite the towers being smithereens, Duncan accelerates on, straight through the cloud of black smoke and Sierra's ashes.
"Uhm, Duncan, you can turn back. The challenge is done. You lost." Chris says through his mic.
"BEAT IT GRANDPA! This is over when I say it's over." And with that, Duncan flew off into the distance.
Chris listened in to his headset for an hour, until eventually he hears a large crashing sound before radio silence. "I guess that's Duncan out."
Zoey bursts out crying hysterically. "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!" She collapsed to the ground, shaking, and painting the dead grass of Wawanakwa black from her runny eyeliner.
"Mike, aren't you gonna help her? ... Mike?" Cameron asks, unable to find Mal.
"Hey, Chris. The helicopter's missing." Chef prods Chris.
"Meh, we'll just scrap in the robot and use the funds and remaining budget for a new one." Chris responds.
"But that's not it, there was also this not-"
Suddenly, there's loud static from Chris' headset.
"This is Radio 7, broadcasting on all channels. A helicopter has hit the One World Trade Center, I repeat a helicopter has hit the One World Trade Center on the anniversary of 9/11."
"What was it?" Gwen asks.
"Oh, just 9/11 2." Chris reads the note. "I have no fucking idea what this means."
The note, written in red ink, says, "Our Love is God."
Epilogue:
Mal died. He flew the helicopter into the One World Trade Center. Everyone else is so confused why "Mike" would have done this. But not Sierra.
Sierra would've understood Mal's actions.
Total Drama All-Stars was cancelled not long after this. Camp Wawanakwa was used for therapy and relaxation by past Total Drama characters affected by the loss of Sierra, with many cast members staying in the hotel and Plays Des Losers.
In a room at the end of the corridor, a red-headed girl cries.
A red-headed boy knocks on the door.
"... Zoey. You need to get out." Scott enters.
"Why should I? Everyone I love dies." Zoey replies.
"Well, do you love me?" Scott asks.
Zoey bites her lip. "No."
"Well then, I can stay. I won't die, and you don't need to be alone." Scott sits next to her bed, which she is sat upon.
"Why do you care?" Zoey bites.
Scott looks to the floor, plucking the carpet. "Because I've lost everything once before. And it felt awful. And I think I could try and help you from going to the dark places I went."
"You're talking about the trauma chair, aren't you?" Zoey asks.
"Honestly? Yeah."
"See, everyone around me gets hurt."
"and yet I'm here."
Zoey looks at him for a moment. His profile illuminated by the corridor lighting. She forgot what he looked like, or people in general. It's been weeks since she's seen anyone.
"You really do care," Zoey gasps, and leans in for a kiss.
Scott is flabbergasted, but holds her closely and returns the kiss.
"I've always been so scared to tell you how I feel," Scott replies. "But I know things are very intense. So I'm gonna give you space."
"You're a bad boy just like Duncan. And you forgave me and look past all my flaws just like Mike. If I date you, it's like I'm dating Mike and Duncan!"
Scott's face dropped.
"You know where to find us, Zoey." With that, Scott stands up, leaves the room, closes it, and cries.
Zoey stares into the darkness. But it's okay, at least the person she hurt this time lived to tell the tale again.
But there's worse games to play.
I love the heatherra scraps. But of course it's malerra. You can't talk about 9/11 without talking about malerra. Anon, this was beautiful. From the malerra and doey into the drama and the sadness. I cried. I cried when Sierra died. And Mal's mixtape for her. My god. And then the scoey ending...

Uncommon OC Questions: (By @cassandrapentayaaaaas)
I know this is kinda long! but I wanted to share these anyway. It gives yall more info about Dev!
What’s the maximum amount of time your character can sit still with nothing to do?
Twenty minutes max. He’s gotta be doing something
How easy is it for your character to laugh?
Pretty easy. Dumb jokes, good jokes, teasing someone else, funny stories, just funny situations or images can make him laugh
How do they put themselves to bed at night (reading, singing, thinking?):
Overworking himself to the bone/point of exhaustion
How easy is it to earn their trust?
Pretty hard honestly
He’s not one to trust easily, after being hurt too many times by other people. He’s not shut off like Shane or others, just keeps people at a distance
He’ll smile and still act kindly towards you but it’s more a courtesy thing to keep his reputation in tact
How easy is it to earn their mistrust?
So easy yet so hard
If someone does something that goes against his trust. He’ll be hurt for a few days, then give them a second chance
Then a third
And a fourth
He keeps getting hurt, but he keeps forgiving them and keeping them in his life. The distance he puts them at just keeps getting longer but he never outright drops anyone
Do they consider laws flexible, or immovable?
Immovable
This idiot lives by the rules to the point of being stressed when others don’t
The only ‘law’ he’ll go against is fighting people in public if they piss him off enough
“What are you going to do? Call the cops? There are no cops in Pelican town” he says before swinging at Morris
What triggers nostalgia for them, most often? Do they enjoy that feeling?
The only thing that makes him think of the past is loneliness or hearing parents yelling at their kids
So he never enjoys feeling nostalgic for times pre moving to the farm
Sometimes he’ll catch himself thinking about his first month at the farm, and how far he’s come. That feeling is welcome. But anything earlier is not
What were they told to stop/start doing most often as a child
To sit still or be quiet
Which he failed at
He joined sports and theater to get all of that energy and noise out of his system before going home because of it
Do they swear? Do they remember their first swear word?
He swears every now and then.
Mainly when angry or stressed
His first was probably ‘Bitch’ due to being called it a lot in middle school
What lie do they most frequently remember telling? Does it haunt them?
His main lie is “I’m okay” or “I don’t mind doing this thing for you”
Dev has a hard time letting people in or telling them the truth when it comes to his feelings.
He’ll say yes to basically any task, even if he really doesn’t want to do that
How do they cope with confusion (seek clarification, pretend they understand, etc)?
Ask the person to repeat it a second time
And then hope that he retained the information and pretend that he knows what he’s doing
Normally he listens and understands pretty well, but on the days that he doesn’t he’ll hear ‘Beach’ and go there, then instantly forget why he’s there
How do they deal with an itch found in a place they can’t quite reach?
Will scratch his back on a tree like a bear
Also prone to biting his hand to ‘scratch’ an itch
What color do they think they look best in? Do they actually look best in that color?
Brown, that’s what he wears most of
He looks pretty good in brown but he looks really good in blue and green, they bring out the color in his eyes, However due to farm work being messy he doesn’t own a lot of color
His closet is very muted (Greys, beiges, and browns)
What animal do they fear most?
Sharks or Angler fish
Really any big fish
Dev hates fish and anything in the ocean
Small fish are just gross but big fish are terrifying
How do they speak? Is what they say usually thought of on the spot, or do they rehearse it in their mind first?
Bit of both
Dev has heavily rehearsed moments if he’s trying to not say anything dumb and stay on the person's good side
And then there's he’s yelling in rage at some idiot (Lewis and Morris get the brunt of this) and he’s being very blunt and honest because it’s the first thing that comes out of his mind
What makes their stomach turn?
The smell of Fish
Cooked or not
He can’t stand it
Are they easily embarrassed?
Pretty average
Get embarrassed talking about certain things, but also has moments of being the one embarrassing others (normally without meaning to)
What embarrasses them?
Hearing about his friends sexual acts (second hand or accidentally hearing…things…as it’s happening)
Or just having to watch his friends be stupid in public (Second hand embarrassment is real strong with him)
What is their favorite number?
32
No idea why
If they were asked to explain the difference between romantic and platonic or familial love, how would they do so?
Romantic and Platonic is a weird gray line to him, he has no idea how to tell the difference
Romantic is wanting to hold the person when they’re sad
Platonic is wanting to sit in their company when they’re sad
He has no idea how to describe familial love, growing up with the parents he did he doesn’t really know what the feels like.
He’d probably say that it’s the feeling of wanting to protect someone no matter what
Why do they get up in the morning?
Because he has a farm and a shit ton of animals that depend on it.
Some mornings he’ll see the chickens first just to make him smile
He wishes that he could sleep in most days but that’s hard to do when so many animals depend on you to feed them in the morning
How does jealousy manifest itself in them (they become possessive, they become aloof, etc)?
He isn’t really the jealous type
He made peace with the fact that Shane might choose someone else over him
If he feels himself getting jealous he’ll go kill some monsters in the mines to get it out of his system, then make Shane his favorite food as an apology to himself for feeling jealous in the first place
How does envy manifest itself in them (they take what they want, they become resentful, etc)?
He’s got a pretty good handle on his emotions. (other then rage)
But sometimes he’ll get annoyed at how easy money or certain skills come to others
Is sex something that they’re comfortable speaking about? To whom?
That is a convo between him and Shane only
Hates talking about it in the open, he gets far too embarrassed by it even though he’s a whole ass adult
What are their thoughts on marriage?
Always wanted to get married and have a big ceremony for it
He thinks marriage is beautiful and even is the type to accidentally ask his partner to marry him a bit before both of them are ready, pass it off as a joke, and then stress about the fact that he just said that out loud
What is their preferred mode of transportation?
Horse or his beat up pick up truck
The bus is okay, but he prefers being the one in control and not having a deadline to be back at the bus stop
What causes them to feel dread?
Crops not growing how they should
Or having to speak to Lewis, Clint, or Morris
Would they prefer a lie over an unpleasant truth?
He’ll speak the truth since that’s the right thing to do, but sugar coat it like crazy and try to upset the other person as little as possible
Do they usually live up to their own ideals?
No
His expectations for himself are way too high so they’re unreachable.
Who do they most regret meeting?
Morris and Demtrius
Both of them make his blood boil
Who are they the most glad to have met?
Shane for sure
As well as Keyblade and Fern, his roommates
Do they have a go-to story in conversation? Or a joke?
Not really
In a group conversation, he’ll just sit and watch everyone talk
Despite how he his, he isn’t much of a talker but he loves people watching
Could they be considered lazy?
Lmao no, it’s harder to get him to rest then it is to get him to do anything
How hard is it for them to shake a sense of guilt?
Incredibly difficult
Dev will think about his mistakes for days
Thinking of how he could have handled a situation better, even though whatever happened wasn’t his fault
How do they treat the things their friends come to them excited about? Are they supportive?
Tries to match their excitement to keep them smiling
He may not understand anything of what they’re saying but if they’re happy, so is he
Do they actively seek romance, or do they wait for it to fall into their lap?
Dev is very much a romantic, but never wants to push or be overbearing so he crushes hard but it takes a lot of self convincing to do anything about it
Do they have a system for remembering names, long lists of numbers, things that need to go in a certain order (like anagrams, putting things to melodies, etc)?
Saying it outloud three times
Thankfully Pelican town is super small and it’s not a lot of names to remember, but he still has to do that otherwise he’ll forget
That or saying their name while also saying the most noticeable thing about them
(EX: Harvey Mustache, Fern Sunglasses, Emily Blue Hair, etc etc) It sounds stupid at first but it’s very helpful when meeting new people
What memory do they revisit the most often?
Confessing his feelings to Shane most likely
Even after they’ve been together for a while, the way that Shane’s face looked will be engraved in his brain forever
How easy is it for them to ignore flaws in other people?
Regretfully very easy.
There are some people that he can’t look past, but everyone else gets forgiven really easy
How sensitive are they to their own flaws?
Pretty sensitive
If someone points out a thing he did wrong, he’ll smile, nod and fix it (if possible)
But continue to think about it for at least a week
How do they feel about children?
He loves kids, and wants some of his own some day
Since his normal demeanor is upbeat and happy, kids end up getting along with him too
Vincent likes to sit on his shoulders to be tall, and Jas likes to swing from his arm
How badly do they want to reach their end goal?
He thought he had an end goal, but it just turned into smaller goals
Fix this, fix that, marry shane, start a family, etc etc
The goals are never ending, but they’re not very large
If someone asked them to explain their sexuality, how would they do so?
Gay man despite looking like a cishet man from texas

Baseless Ferengi headcanons no one asked for and that get increasingly queer-navel-gazing and self indulgent because the horrible space goblins have consumed my brain:
- Mobile ears, because if hearing is so well developed and important to them they should be able to aim those big stupid radar dishes. Also because then they can emote with them and that's cute. THE AESTHETIC IS PARAMOUNT.
- Since they canonically sharpen their teeth with chew sticks and sharpeners, their teeth must grow continuously. So I submit: subcultures that let certain teeth grow out as a fashion/political statement. Ferengi punks and anarchists with 5" tusks. Ferengi with all their teeth filed flat (mom and dad HATE it).
- Corollary to the above, most of their teeth are crooked. At the least, they don't share our fetish for straight teeth. What if their teeth are deciduous, and there's no point in trying to force them into perfect alignment, since they'll just fall out and get replaced? So like, sharks but their teeth can also grow longer with no limit. WHAT HAST EVOLUTION WROUGHT ON FERENGINAR :V
- Parents nagging their kids to sharpen their teeth "or they'll grow up into your brain and you'll die :)"
- Personal space? Don't know her.
Okay I need a cut because there's too many now. WHOLE SOCIETY OF GAY HOMOPHOBIC UNCLES AND AUNTS GO I HAVE A PROBLEM
- I can't remember who on here put forth the idea of them having retractable claws but Yes. :3
- Pushing back against the worst canon episode a bit but: relative ear size being the only obvious sexually dimorphic trait, and even that having enough of a gray area that the only way to be 100% sure you're talking to a male or female Ferengi is if you do a blood test. Unless they're intersex! *shrug emoji*
- This is why they're so fanatical about gender conformity and their Victorian "separate spheres" attitude to men and women's roles. Capitalist patriarchy is fragile! And as artificial to Ferengi as it ever was to Humans! (self-indulgenceeeee about gender shiiiiit)
- You know how with domesticated rabbits, the rabbit getting groomed and paid attention to is the boss? Yeah. Go ahead and paint your bestie's nails, just don't be surprised if she cops a little bit of an attitude with you from then on.
- Their fight/flight/freeze/fawn instincts skew heavily toward the last three, and what a lot of other species read as annoying sucking up is the Ferengi in question feeling anxious and unsafe. Especially if they don't feel integrated into the group. Even being at the bottom of the pecking order is better than not being in the flock at all.
- If they DO opt for fight, it's ugly and typically their last resort. Bites or scratches will get infected without intervention-- microbes that their immune system can handle could cause big trouble for aliens. You might wanna check for full or partial teeth that break off and get lodged in the wound, too.
- Too many of these are tooth related but I don't care. :B More teeth stuff: you know what else has teeth that grow constantly? Puffer fish. Likewise, Ferengi can chew up mollusk shells as easy as potato chips, and they need the minerals for their teeth. (Imagine grandpa Sisko offering Nog a crayfish for the first time and watching as he just...pops the whole damn thing in his mouth and crunches away...)
- Their staple foods seem to be grubs and other arthropods, high in protein and fat. I've unilaterally decided their cuisine also involves a lot of edible fungi, ferns, plant shoots and seeds. Gotta get those vitamins. Overall flavor profile leaning toward umami, vegetal, and fresh herbs, and pretty mild (or "delicate" if you wanna be snooty about it, which a Ferengi probably would let's be real).
- Not much sugary food. I'm basing this solely on Quark's aversion to root beer as "cloying". Which could definitely just be his personal preference, but most of the people I hear hating on root beer cite the actual sassafras/sarsaparilla flavor (saying it tastes like medicine) not the sweetness. Nog might be the weirdo outlier for being able to enjoy it.
- Their home planet isn't bright and sunny, so their eyes are better at discerning shades of gray in low light conditions, with relatively weak color vision. Which could explain why they dress Like That.
- Conversely, human music has a reputation for stinking on ice because a lot of it is juuuuust lightly dissonant or out of tune because we can't pick up flaws that small. Ferengi can, and it drives them up the *wall*.
- Music? So many different kinds. Traditionally, maybe lots of percussion and winds, and water as a common component of many instruments to alter pitch or tone. Polyphony out the ass. Some of the modern stuff is an impenetrable wall of sound if you're not a species with a lot of brain real estate devoted to processing sounds. Pick out one melody to follow at a time.
- Yes, back to teeth again I'm sorry. It's a sickness. At some point in their history, pre-chewing food was just something you did for your baby or great grandma as a matter of necessity. Possibly your baby gets an important boost to their immune system and gut biome from your spit. At some point takes on a more formal intimacy aspect and gradually drifted from something all adults and older kids do to something only women do. Your husband and older kids have perfectly functional teeth, but you love them, right? =_= (Think old memes about husbands being useless in the kitchen if little wifey isn't there to cook, but even more ridiculous. Ishka was right about everything but especially this. Thank you for making your family chew their own food, Ishka. Not all heroes wear capes. Or anything!)
- How did they get started on the whole men: clothed vs women: unclothed nonsense? My equally stupid idea: men just get cold easier. Those huge ears dissipate a ton of body heat. Cue Ferengi cliches like "jeez, we could be standing on the surface of the sun and my husband would put on another layer." At some point, again, this got codified and pushed to ridiculous extremes in the name of controlling women and keeping everyone in their assigned box, to the point that women just have to shiver if they really are too cold and men have to pass out from heat stroke if the alternative is going shirtless, because That Would Be Inappropriate.
- Marriages default to five years, but they're also the only avenue for women to have their own household or any stability. Plus their religion places no emphasis on purity save for pure adherence to the free market and the RoA. So, curveball to the rest of their patriarchal bullshit: female virginity isn't a concern in the least. Bring it up and they'll rightly side-eye you.
- Family law is absolutely bonkers and lawyers that specialize in it make BANK. I feel like custody would default to the father usually but oh wait, the maternal grandfather has a legal stake in this, too, and your next father-in-law is asking HOW many kids are you dragging into my daughter's house, etc etc. Growing up with a full sibling is way rarer than growing up with half or stepsiblings, since it usually takes both men and women two or three tries to find someone they vibe with. (Not love, unless you're super cringe.)
- A misogynistic society is a homophobic society. Imo those flavors of shittiness just come in pairs. Homosexual behaviors are fine within certain parameters (aka "always have sex with the boss") but not on your own terms. To add spice, bisexuality is their most common mode (because I'm bi and these are my hcs for my fics I'm not writing, so there), but capitalism demands fresh grist for the mill so you better get het-married and pop out some kids you lowly peons. You have a choice so make the proper one. :)
- Corollary to the above, that doesn't keep all kinds of illicit "we're just friends with quid-pro-quo benefits for realsies" affairs of every stripe and every gender from going on everywhere. Many Ferengi have a lightbulb moment somewhere in early adulthood when they figure out their dad's business partner or the "auntie" who visited their mom every month had a little more going on.
- Plus there's way more gender non-conformity and varying degrees of trans-ing than the powers that be have a handle on. Pel isn't unique, even if most would have to somehow make it out into space to be able to thrive.
Damn a lot of these are just my personal bugbears plus THE GILDED AGE BUT WITH HAIRLESS SPACE RODENTS ain't they
- Women can't earn profit, okay. But lending or "lending" things to each other isn't commerce, riiiiiiight? To be assigned female is to master navigating a vast, dizzying barter/gift economy. Smart boys and men leverage this, too, and there are splinter sects that view this as the purest expression of the Great Material Continuum.
- Of course plenty of women make profit anyway, and just do their bast to dodge the FCA. The tough thing about insisting on using latinum as currency is that cash can be so hard to track, you know?
- Because of the RoA, guys are discouraged from doing favors or giving gifts without setting clear expectation of getting some return on investment. This can twist into an expression of friendship (and of course women do it too), and the ledger will keep cycling between debit and credit among friends for decades. A common mistake aliens make is to tell them recompense isn't needed without explaining why, or return their favor or present with something that zeroes out the debt. The Ferengi will assume you want to break off the friendship. (I cribbed this from dim memories of an African studies course I took in 2007 and whose textbook I know I still have but I can't frigging find it...)
- Flirting, they do a lot of it for a lot of reasons. Roddenberry made it clear that they're just straight up pretty horny, but there's no reason it can't pull double duty for building alliances with other people, smoothing over feuds or disagreements, or cementing friendships. Ferengi who are ace and/or sex-repulsed are possibly viewed similar to the way we'd view someone who's "not a hugger/not big on touching" and if they flirt just don't get offended if it doesn't go any further; aro Ferengi don't garner much comment aside from an occasional "wow how badass, never falling in love with anyone."
- where to even start on making sense of the Blessed Exchequer??? Like seriously, what is this literal prosperity gospel insanity, I need to force myself to re-read Rand and like, some Milton Friedman for this shit. Help.
- fuck I'm probably going to actually do that, RIP me...

Starker and bondage?
Tumblr media
Tony plans a fun night with ropes for them, except with an unexpected twist.
"Well? Are you just gonna stay there all day, baby?”
Tony’s drawl made Peter look up from the brown ropes he was holding in his hands. The Dom was smirking at him, knowing how affected Peter was by what he was expected to do, knowing and relishing the fact that Peter had basically been dropkicked into subspace by the command.
When Peter didn’t move, he rolled his eyes. “I guess you are, then.” Tony shifted his expression into an unimpressed one, giving Peter a look that went straight to his cock. “You’re doing an awfully poor impression of someone who wants to come by the end of tonight. Get over here and tie Daddy up like he’s just told you to.”
“Um,” Peter said intelligently, flinching when the vibrating plug in his ass started up a steady hum, then shook his head to clear his thoughts. Get it together, Peter. “Yes, Daddy.”
He moved forward, starting to undo the ropes from how they were neatly knotted up. When he had an ample amount in his hand, he looked at Tony for further instructions.
Tony eyed the mess in his hands critically like he’d already fucked up, then jerked his chin to indicate that Peter was to come closer. Peter dutifully shuffled forward on his knees until Tony stopped him with a hand. “Double the rope,” he ordered.
Peter moved to obey, but before he could overlap the rope into two, his chin was taken in hand with a near punishing grip, and Tony pulled him into a hard, wet kiss. Peter went limp, letting the Dom take over, sucking and biting until he pulled back, eyeing Peter appraisingly then smirking at the ruined state he was already in.
“Good boy.” Tony grinned. “Now you can get to it.”
With shaky hands, Peter obeyed every one of Tony’s commands. Tie the knot off here, right under my collarbone. Pull it through the grip here. Push through the loop twice. Make a hook.
When they reached the halfway point, Peter’s hands busy with the double knot he’d been ordered to work on, Tony took his hard cock in hand, making Peter keen at the friction. His hips had already been twitching forward slightly as he worked like he wanted to rub off on Tony—god, how fucking filthy was that; he was like a bitch in heat at this point—and the newly added touch was toomuchtoogoodohfuck—
He bit his lip and closed his eyes, tilting his head back ever so slightly when Tony’s hand began to stroke up and down, languidly, lazily, in one fluid motion.
“Are you slacking off?”
Tony’s dangerous tone made his eyes snap back open and he gasped, “No, Sir!” but it was too late.
Tony’s eyes flashed and he slapped his cock, making it bounce and drip pre-come on the floor. Peter choked, breathing out a shaky, “Fuck,” doubling over. The smack hadn’t been hard, but Peter was sensitive and Tony knew that, had used it to his advantage.
“Pay attention to what you’re doing or we’ll have to start over, sweetheart.”
“Yes, Daddy,” Peter barely managed to get out. The vibration in his ass grew stronger and a low, throaty whine escaped him. Quivering, he clumsily finished up his double knot, then waited to be given his next command.
Tony, however, seemed more than content to take his time. He hummed, licking his lips as he eyed Peter like he was a piece of candy despite the fact that he was the one who was tied up. His hand formed a loose ‘o’ shape as he took Peter’s hard dick in his hand again. He teased at his slit with his thumb, smearing pre-come all over the head, until Peter was a sweaty, trembling mess, unable to suppress the moans and pleas coming out of his mouth.
“Oh, fuck, please, Daddy. Ohhh, shit, I—”
“Shhhh. Shhh. Clean up my hand, darling. You made a mess everywhere.” Tony stopped right as he reached the brink of orgasm, making hot, desperate, needy tears leak out of his eyes.
Making a small, hungry noise, Peter practically threw himself at Tony’s hand, licking and taking each one of his fingers into his mouth, lapping in between his fingers, lathering every inch of skin with his tongue.
Eventually, Tony stopped him, eyeing his leaking cock appreciatively, then smiled sweetly at Peter, who was significantly less composed than he was. “Finish me off, sweetheart.”
By the end of it, Tony was sufficiently criss-crossed with intricate layers of rope, though significantly less cleaner and sharper than when he’d do it on Peter. Still, considering it was his first time, Peter thought it was pretty good.
The only thing that wasn’t good was the fact that he could probably come just from the plug in his ass if Tony didn’t get him off right fucking now, and he wasn’t looking to earn himself a punishment.
And of course, Tony knew exactly what predicament Peter was in—hell, he’d practically set him up for failure from the start, had known how needy Peter would be by the end of it.
He grinned, shark-like, and it was mean, just the way Peter liked it. “Get me out of these bonds. Now it’s your turn, baby.”

Fanfiction Scavenger Hunt
The results of my Easter themed fanfiction scavenger hunt (otherwise known as a list of some Descendants fics I love and adore with a small sprinkle of fics I wrote myself, complete with convenient little excerpts to get ya hooked). ;)
(Note: Half the list is under a cut since the excerpts made this a lengthy post.)
1. Chocolate: Illuminate a world that'll try to bring you down by @fuck-you-i-am-spiderman
It isn’t clear how much time has passed, how long Carlos has been sitting there or how he managed to stop crying. Had he fallen asleep? Maybe. When he finally opens his eyes it’s to the sound of rustling, Carlos slowly looks up to see Mal sprawled on the grass in front of him, wafting a bag of chocolate candies in front of his face,
“Thought that’d get you to look.” Mal laughs in victory, flashing him a smug smile.
2. Stuffed animals: Playlist Saga: Harry by @moorsgrimhilde
“Are ye sure ye dinnae need any help with that? Seems too much fer yer wee arms,” Harry giggled in delight and made room for his friend to walk inside his room.
“Maybe don’t be an ass when I’m doing something nice for you?” Mal grumbled but there was no actual bite to her words.
Turns out that buying something bigger than her not only ruins the surprise but also is currently causing her a great deal of embarrassment as she struggles to pull the real sized white shark plushie she decided Harry needed in his life.
3. Basket(s): Good Days by @hoodpane
Mal is hardly five when she learns to renounce her natural instinct. A goblin in the square drops his basket of apples and stares dejectedly at the tumbling fruit, spilling across the dirty island concrete, and the greedy eyes of a dozen people turn to stare. Some approach to snatch the rare bit of food up before it can be taken from them- the way everything else has been- but others hesitate. Mal knows why. Her mother.
4. Painting: Mirror, Mirror by @callous-and-misunderstood
Because Mal is nothing like Evie. Mal is angry and stubborn and bold. She wears clothes for comfort and mobility. She laughs loudly, with her mouth open, teeth bared. And even though her hand is steady with a can of spray paint, her eyeliner always comes out crooked. And she doesn't redo it. She leaves it, flawed. Mal isn’t perfect. And Evie loves her because that's what scares Evie the most.
After Snow White, it was not enough to just be fairest. Evie had to be perfect.
5. Decorating: A Christmas to Remember by @telli1206
“Jay, I don’t know where you get your ideas...but I love this!” Lonnie croons.
She steals a glance back at Jane, smiling at the girl’s huge, awestruck eyes that are grazing over the gorgeousness of the snowy forest around them. She grins happily at the breathtaking view, blushing instantly when she catches Lonnie watching her.
“Jane’s so wide-eyed over this forest. I think you really scored me some brownie points with this one. And decorating trees is her favorite thing to do at Christmas!”
6. Nest(ing): Jaylos ABO Drabble by @bunny-lou
“What the fuck did I-?” Jay turns as he scans the room. “Dude. No way.”
Carlos perks up at the sound of Jay’s voice in his direction. His heat starts next week and he’s been cleaning their room obsessively all day. Pre-nesting is what the books call it, but he’s got his nest all made up already. Blankets and pillows and clothing from Jay and Mal and Evie and even a few things from Jane and Ben. His nest looks very nice and Carlos is very proud of it.
But Jay is looking not very proud. “Have you had it this whole time?”
7. Hunt(ing): Your Baby Ain’t Sweet Like Mine by yours truly
Honestly, Jay should be so lucky if it were Carlos’ impulse to bite the mailman, or hunt a squirrel, or swallow his steak before he could even heat up the pan, but no—no, it was never anything like that.
Carlos wanted chocolate, and he didn’t much care for Jay’s allegedly “dramatic” monologues about how dangerous it was and how he shouldn’t risk it, because—allegedly—Carlos “wasn’t some idiot.”
Worse than that, actually, he was an evil genius.
8. Flowers: Get in losers, we're going road-tripping by @fuck-you-i-am-spiderman
“So um-” Carlos coughs bringing their attention back, “the other night Eves and I were looking up some activities for the trip, and we found out that there are some really rare flowers you can only find in this forest.” He wrings his hands together, fidgeting with his fingers as he speaks.
“I figured you could sketch them Mal,” he bites his lip, stuttering a little under the intense green gaze, “I-I know you’ve been struggling for inspiration, and I-”
Mal holds up her hand, giving him what she hopes is a reassuring smile, “that’s a great idea Carlos, thanks.”
9. Hide/ing: Autophobia by @bunny-lou
Okay, fine, so Evie offers friendship and affection and attention, things Carlos never thought he would want in his life because he had never experienced them, but neither had Evie. They were both isolated their whole lives and Carlos clings to Evie as much as she does to him. He’s just better at hiding it.
Carlos is becoming quite good at hiding just about everything.
So there’s no way that Evie figured out…
He gulps.
10. Springtime: The Wedding Date by @telli1206
Evie lets the laughter die down again before she speaks, her tone a little more serious. “You know I owe you big for doing this, right?” Jay looks at her, surprised, and shakes his head vigorously. “You’re really saving me here.”
“You owe me? For what? A week of fun, no school, and loads of free food? With the wedding bash of the year to top it all off? I should be thanking you , Eves. This is totally going to beat crashing in my cramped apartment our entire Spring break.”
11. Childhood: Rats des Villes by yours truly
Carlos blinked, looking around, letting his eyes adjust to the darkness. He was definitely in the closet. He could see the thick, looming shapes of his mother’s furs, all fluffed and—moving?
No, no. That was a fear that died in childhood.
These weren’t animals anymore. These were just… skins.
12. Backyard: christmases when you were mine by @unapologeticallyjaylos
As they sat, Jay tried to pull himself together enough to make a plan. He was good at plans; not as good as Mal, maybe, but his instincts made up for whatever else he lacked in organization. He and Gil could pack up the tent, he supposed, although that would definitely slow them down. But they’d already probably lost most of their shit, and Ben had been really generous with the travel supplies. They couldn’t just leave this thing in Evie’s backyard; where would they sleep once they got back on the road?
13. Bunnies: She Painted Fire Across the Skyline by yours truly
“M’not hungry,” said Carlos, straining to reach a dust bunny beneath the night table as he held the rest of the dirt he’d gathered in one cupped hand. Mal made an exasperated noise as he began to slide off the bed, too dazed to react to the fact that his head was about to split open like a coconut.
14. Garden: “Jaylos + Gardening” (Drabble) by @telli1206
So Evie keeps asking him to do some of the more simple gardening, like pulling the weeds and replacing the mulch, and as soon as Jay realizes that Carlos is in the garden, he throws on his crocs and runs out to help him.
Help him make a mess, that is.
15. Eggs: Dragon Anatomy 101 (I’m Going To Make This Weird) by yours truly
There was a beat of silence, and then, Carlos simply gestured to his chemistry textbook, replying, “Nah, nothing, it’s just—” His lips twitched into a smirk, seeing Jay’s shoulders start to relax. “—Jay’s been wondering if your mom lays eggs, I guess.”

After All - Chapter 3/5
Tumblr media
Cover art by @faith2nyc  Read on AO3
The hustle and bustle of the aquarium is magnified in the underwater tunnel as locals and tourists alike take in the scenery. But as Steve watches Isabel stare at the glass panels above them with fascination thick on her face and an exclamation of  wow! slipping from her lips every now and then, he notes that the ruckus is not nearly enough to drown out his daughter’s infectious excitement. She’d been intrigued the second they walked into the first exhibit and saw a school of colorful fish swim by, all but demanding to be let out of her stroller, and ever since, getting her to walk in stride with him and Natasha instead of an entire full step ahead has been a lost cause.
As Isabel stops by one of the windows to admire an idling turtle, he steals a glance at Natasha to see a smile on her face as she watches Isabel wave at her newfound friend. To say that he was surprised when she offered him a beer last night would be an understatement. While they’ve certainly warmed up to each other in the last few days, Isabel's always been there to serve as a buffer between them, making sure that their conversations never progress longer than the time it takes for her to knock something over or cry for attention. Which is why, when Natasha had been so candid and open about her recent struggles at work with him last night, he was downright stunned. Still, the way they had smoothly transitioned into talking about life and their newfound perspective on it was reminiscent of the times they’d meet up after work to shoot the breeze at Dalton’s. Regardless of what he was going through then, he always left their self-designated booth those nights feeling better, and last night was no different. It’s something he has dearly missed.
It was that camaraderie that made him act on the impulse of asking her to tag along today. And though he’d all but goaded her into saying yes, he was still a bit nervous on his way to her flat this morning. It had been ages since the three of them had gone out together, and most of those instances had been to Christine’s office for Isabel’s checkups. But thus far, he’s glad that their rapport picked up right where it left last night, slipping effortlessly into conversation, catching each other up on mundane things like what their friends back at The Daily are up to and how Natasha’s yet to find a Thai restaurant that compares to their favorite one in the East Village. Further, while he’s certainly had fun discovering new aspects of Isabel’s personality these last few days, he has to admit that it’s nice having someone who shares his amusement to her reactions.
“Did you know that she loved fish this much?” he asks, keeping his eyes on Isabel as she begins to move once again.
“I had an inkling,” Natasha says, pushing the empty stroller. “You know those illustrations of sea creatures you made for her? I had them bound into a book before we moved so they wouldn’t get destroyed, and added it to the rotation when she started showing interest in picture books.” She nods towards Isabel, whose head keeps moving from side to side as she decides which exhibit to focus on next. She chuckles. “But I didn’t think she’d be beside herself like this.”
The corners of his mouth twitch into a smile. “She likes those?”
“They’re her favorite,” Natasha says, nodding in confirmation when he turns to look at her, surprised. “Of course, I try to mix it up every now and then, so her knowledge isn’t just limited to sea animals” – she pauses as they both laugh – “but given a choice? She’d pick that book in a heartbeat, every single time.”
“When we were at the Gardens the other day, the first urn she picked out on the fountain was the dolphin,” he says, slipping his hands into his pockets and no longer trying to contain his smile.
“Well, I did have the dolphin placed on the cover,” she says.
He looks at her, raising an eyebrow at the smile she seems to be biting back. “Because… dolphins are your favorite?”
“Not particularly,” she says. “But I do distinctly remember catching you doodling it during a section meeting.” She smirks at the sheepish expression that makes it onto his face. “Consider it a pre-emptive strike for when there’s a question about who she got her short attention span from.”
“She’s barely two,” he says emphatically, “of course her attention span is short!” When Natasha only shrugs, he scoffs in disbelief. “And excuse me, you’re the one who pretends to take notes on your iPad when really you’re playing Scrabble with Darcy.”
She gasps at his retort, but it’s quickly replaced by a chuckle. “Only when Sitwell’s talking!”
“That’s still an indictment of your attention span,” he counters, causing her to raise an eyebrow in challenge. “I’m just saying-”
“Dada!”
Isabel’s distressed voice interrupts him, but before he and Natasha can search for her, Isabel already has her arms around his leg and her face in the material of his jeans. “Izzie?” he says, scooping her into his arms just as Natasha comes around to them. “What’s wrong?”
“Are you hurt?” Natasha asks, checking Isabel’s arms and legs.
Isabel shakes her head, pointing towards the window to the right. “Shark!”
He and Natasha look over, and sure enough, a large tiger shark looms by the panel, its teeth bared. “Oh, fig,” he says, making sure to keep his amusement out of his tone even as he and Natasha trade yet another fascinated look. “You don’t have to be afraid. We’re inside, it can’t get to you.”
“No,” Isabel says, “home!”
The way Isabel’s arms tighten around his neck causes him to freeze, and he tries to rack his brain for a solution to calm her down. But then Natasha reaches over, patting Isabel’s hair gently. “But fig,” she chimes in, “we haven’t seen the penguins like in Happy Feet, yet.”
Isabel lifts her head from his shoulder, looking to him and then to Natasha. “Pen-gins?”
“Yeah!” Natasha says with a level of excitement he’s only ever heard her use when speaking to their daughter. “How ‘bout it, huh? Can you let Daddy put you down so we can go visit the penguins?”
Isabel smiles, nodding her head. “Okay.”
“Nice save,” he tells Natasha as he takes the stroller from her and she takes Isabel’s hand, leading them towards the hall labeled Polar Adventure.
“You pick up a thing or two after a while,” Natasha says, winking. “You’ll see.”
While he’s gone to see the penguins at Central Park before, he has to admit that the Penguin Point experience really is something special. From the simulated North Pole ambiance, complete with manufactured ice shelves and snowflakes, to the plexiglass bubble that allows visitors to come practically nose-to-beak with the Gentoos, it’s no wonder that Isabel’s been propelled over the moon. Her freight over the shark long forgotten as she and Natasha sit on the ledge of the enclosure to see the penguins wobble by. To the side, their guide dutifully informs them about the speed at which these flightless birds can swim, though he can’t say he’s paying much attention. Ever since he had seen the way Natasha had expertly diverted Isabel’s worries, he can’t seem to peel his eyes away from them, observing their interactions carefully and smiling at the unquestionable love and affection between them.
There’s never been a doubt in his mind about what a great mother Natasha is. He’s seen it firsthand, witnessed how easily she had tackled motherhood from the moment Isabel was born like it was something she was always meant to do. In many ways, he knows that she’s attuned to their daughter in a manner only she can be, instead it’s not something he feels a shred of envy over. He couldn’t be happier or more thankful that she happens to be the mother of his child, and from where he stands, that sentiment is only fortified when he sees Natasha point at the penguins jumping into the water, and Isabel, who’s sitting in her lap, claps her hands in elation.
The sight brings a warmth to his chest, and as he begins to make his way over to them, Natasha looks up, grinning softly, and he smiles back without so much as a second thought as she alerts Isabel of his presence. Isabel turns towards him, her eyes alight. “Having fun?” he asks, bending down.
“Pen-gins, Dada!” Isabel all but shrieks, pointing to the enclosure behind them.
“I’ve never seen her this excited,” Natasha whispers over Isabel’s head as she continues to babble on. “I think she might actually pass out.”
“Good thing I thought to bring the stroller,” he deadpans, chuckling at the way her eyes narrow at him. “Izzie, can we take a picture for grandma?”
Isabel nods, and as he reaches for his phone, Natasha begins to move. “Mama, no!” Isabel says, latching onto Natasha’s arm before she can stand.
“Daddy’s going to take your picture, babe,” Natasha explains.
“You don’t have to move,” he says. “Let’s get a couple shots of the both of you.”
“Are you sure?” she asks, her tone skeptical as she tilts her head to the side. “It’s for your mom...”
“I’m sure she won’t mind,” he says, taking a step back to widen the angle when Natasha goes to sit back with Isabel, pulling her into her lap once more. “Okay, in three, two, one… say cheese!”
“Cheese!” Natasha and Isabel say in unison, the both of them beaming from ear to ear, and he mirrors their expressions as he snaps a few shots of them.
“Why don’t I take some of you two?” Natasha suggests, and with a nod, he switches places with her, handing her his phone as he goes. “Look at momma, Iz! Good girl, now smile!” She moves to the left to shift the angle, and he and Isabel pivot accordingly to get the penguins behind them into the frame. “Okay, now funny face! Perfect!” She giggles from behind the screen. “Sarah’s going to love these.”
He chuckles, accepting his phone back from her to see a picture of Isabel with her tongue out and him cross-eyed. “They’ll be on her fridge in no time.”
“Excuse me?” They look up at the question to see their guide standing before them, a genial smile on his face. “Would you like me to take a photo of the three of you?”
His head whips from their guide to Natasha. “If that’s okay with you?”
“That would be great, actually,” Natasha says, stealing a glance at the nametag on the left side of the man’s vest. “Thank you, Heimdall.” She turns back to him and Isabel, smiling as he moves to make space for her on the ledge. “Let’s make sure she’s looking at the camera. I don’t want to hear it from Nick and Melinda.”
“Nor do I want to hear it from my ma,” he volleys back as she sits down, laughing as she shakes her head.
“Okay,” Heimdall says, holding up the camera before gesturing to them with his free hand. “Move a little closer, yeah?” He and Natasha do as they’re told, scooting closer to one another until their legs are touching, and he shifts Isabel to sit on both of them. “Brilliant! Now everybody lean in… and say penguin!”
“Penguin!” he and Natasha say at the same time Isabel yells cheese, sending them both into a fit of laughter.
When Heimdall gives them a thumbs up, Natasha turns to Isabel, shaking her head fondly. “Such a little rebel.”
“And whom does she take after?” Heimdall asks, only to chuckle when he and Natasha point fingers at one another. “In any case, you lot make a beautiful family.”
He smiles politely as Heimdall passes his phone back. “Thank you.”
“Think she has enough penguin things?” Natasha asks hours later as they sit at a café across the aquarium.
He chuckles over the lip of his coffee mug, setting it down on the table as he looks to the highchair where Isabel is working on her penguin activity book with a penguin scarf around her neck. “Oh, I don’t know,” he says, “maybe ask me again later when she puts on her penguin pajamas.”
“Hey, consider yourself lucky that I was able to negotiate the pajamas in exchange for the stuffed, jumbo penguin,” she says. “We’d probably have to get it its own Oyster card just to get it home.”
“Gift shops or death traps for the wallets of desperate parents?” he muses. “You decide.”
She smirks in agreement. “So…” she trails, propping an elbow on the table to rest her chin on a closed fist. “Christmas Eve. What’re you up to?”
“Not much, really,” he admits. “The hotel I’m staying at said they have something going on in the lounge for a bit, but I’m probably just going to turn in since I promised everyone that I’d wrap their gifts for” – he nods silently towards Isabel – “you know who in time for Christmas morning at yours.”
“They do know she’s coming home with you, right?” she asks. “They could’ve just given it to her there.”
“Believe me, if they listened to me at all, I wouldn’t be so worried about getting sauce on one of the few shirts I have for this trip,” he says, eliciting a laugh from her.
“Point taken,” she says. “But I ask because when I realized Izzie and I weren’t going to make it back for Christmas, I decided to invite some people over to my place for Christmas Eve.” She shrugs. “If you don’t have anything set in stone, you’re welcome to join us.”
“Natasha,” he says, averting his gaze to his hands. “Thank you, that’s very kind of you, but I don’t want to intrude on you and your friends.”
“Hard to be an intruder when you’re being invited,” she counters, sighing when he remains silent. “Steve.” He looks up at her at that, catching her disarming smile. “Look, I know in the past we’ve made a mess of things-”
“Natasha,” he repeats, shaking his head. “Consider that water over the dam.”
“Okay, yeah,” she says. “But now that we’ve put that out there, maybe we can look forward? I mean, I wish I could say that this is the only time a monkey wrench is going to get thrown into our perfectly planned schedules, but I sincerely doubt it. We’re going to be in each other’s lives, Steve. Might as well get used to it.” She eyes Isabel before looking back at him. “Besides, I think she’d really like having her Dad there.”
He scoffs. “When nine out of ten times her answer is no, I’d say the odds aren’t great.”
“Only one way to find out,” she says, tapping Isabel’s arm. “Izzie, you want Daddy to come to Christmas Eve, right?”
Isabel moves her arm out of Natasha’s reach as she continues to color over a penguin with a purple crayon. “M’busy!”
He and Natasha scoff, and she turns to him with a sheepish expression. “Technically that isn’t a no.”
He rolls his eyes at that before letting out a sigh when Natasha raises a brow in challenge. Immediately, his mind conjures a million different reasons to refuse. Spending a day together is one thing, and while he had been the first one to color outside the lines of their custody agreement by asking to spend Christmas with them in the first place, something about this invitation feels different. Meeting the new people in Natasha’s life, when these relationships have no bearing on how well the two of them function as co-parents, seems like a weightier, riskier choice. But then his mother’s words come to mind: like it or not, you and Natasha are forever bonded by the beautiful baby girl you two brought into this world. That makes you family, and families spend Christmas together.
When it comes down to it, with their family being as unorthodox as it is, it was always going to be more complicated to navigate than the average unit. But if Natasha, one of the most pragmatic people he knows and who he trusts to make difficult decisions, is willing to extend an olive branch, who is he to turn it down.
“Okay,” he says, smiling at the way Natasha’s eyes light up when she gets her way. “But then you’re coming cookie decorating with us in Soho tomorrow.”
“Do we get to take the cookies home?” she asks, to which he nods. “Fine, but since you’re keeping me from laundry, we’re dropping by Selfridges after this.”
He smirks. “Deal.”

Christmas carols play softly in the background in Hela’s Cookie Boutique, but Natasha’s only half listening, too distracted by watching Steve and Isabel decorate sugar cookies with the exact same focused expression on their faces. Isabel turns to Steve, bringing a finger up to his face and giggling when he licks the red icing off, and as she catches the exchange, she smiles. Seeing Steve and Isabel interact up close now that their daughter is more engaging has been an experience she didn’t think she’d find so endearing. Of course, she knew Isabel adored him and that the feeling was absolutely and unabashedly mutual, but to see that affection unfold before her very eyes has made her heart unexpectedly expand in her chest.
Perhaps adding to her giddiness is the fact that this sight is also quite comical. With the class geared toward families, miniature workstations had been set up for the children, and as soon as Isabel had seen them, talking her into sitting elsewhere became downright impossible. Despite the smaller than usual seats, though, she notes that she fits just fine. The same could not be said, however, for Steve right next to her. She lets her gaze fall to him, taking her bottom lip between her teeth to keep from smiling. Hunched in his seat, Steve sticks out like a sore thumb, his broad frame looking even more immense as they’re surrounded by other children. Though she had offered to move stations, he’d refused – too willingly beholden to Isabel’s whims to care about his own comfort.
“I should be mad at you for unleashing our daughter in what is essentially a sugar factory,” she says, prompting Steve to turn to her as she snaps a picture of Isabel. “But I have to admit, she does look darn cute in a baker’s hat!”
He chuckles. “Doesn’t the little shoulder shimmy she does along to the music just kill you?”
“So much so I almost forget how hard it’s going to be to give her a bath later,” she says a little too sweetly, eyeing the sticky mess caked onto their daughter’s arms as Isabel puts more icing than her cookie could possibly hold and finding herself infinitely thankful for the aprons they were provided with.
“Tell you what,” he says. “I’ll give her a bath tonight if you promise that my mother will never see those pictures.”
“Not that I would ever let Sarah know that her son is a traitor who took her granddaughter to another bakery for cookie decorating,” she says, putting her phone away. “But since you offered, feel free to take over bath duty anytime you want.”
He narrows his eyes at her, shaking his head when she does not even bother to hide her smile. “That’s fine,” he says, nodding towards the cookie she’s working on. “When she starts to yell at me, I’ll just show her a picture of your lumpy cookie to distract her.”
“We’re not all aiming to make art out of cookies, Michelangelo,” she teases, making him roll his eyes when she points to his immaculately decorated Santa cookie. “Plus, it’s a lot harder to smooth out this icing than it looks!”
“That’s why you never go for the snowflake. There’s not enough surface area,” he says, reaching over for a fresh cookie, this time shaped like a stocking, before scooping out some blue icing with his spatula. “Here, look. All you have to do is lay the icing down and glide the spatula back and forth like so. It’s all in the wrist.”
“Like this?” she asks, trying to mimic his actions, only to glare at him when he fails miserably at holding back his chuckle when the icing still does not lay smoothly on her cookie. “Excuse me for not being raised in a bakery like some people, okay?”
“I’m sorry,” he says through a wide smile. “Grab a new cookie and some icing and I’ll show you.” She does as instructed, barely hiding her surprise when he crouches down behind her seat, his arms all but wrapping around her as he puts a hand over the one she has clutching the spatula. “Just lay the icing” – he begins to guide her hand, first adding some pressure to flatten the blob of icing before gently moving their hands down the cookie – “and glide.” By the time the spatula reaches the edge of the Christmas tree, there’s not a single peak on the icing, and he turns to her, smirking. “Now was that so hard?”
“Guess not,” she says, craning her neck to look at him. “Thanks.”
He grins. “No problem.”
With their proximity, she feels his words just as much as she hears them, but the thought is fleeting, fading as quickly as it had come when she finds herself caught in his smile and the way his eyes look impossibly brighter in this moment. How long they stay staring at each other, she does not know – seconds, maybe a minute. It’s when they hear a squeal from across the table that he looks away, and when she follows his line of sight, her eyes widen when she sees that Isabel’s gotten hold of a piping bag.
“Izzie, no!” Steve says as they both rush out of their seats.
In spite of Steve’s warning, Isabel squeezes down, and she watches in horror as icing bursts out of the bag and onto Isabel’s face. She cringes as Isabel turns to look at her, icing flowing from her chin and down to her neck. “Uh oh.”
With a shake of her head, she laughs. “Uh oh is right, Little Miss.” She steps forward to reach for the baby bag, sighing in relief when she sees it already in Steve’s grip as he hands her a bunch of wet wipes. “Thank you,” she says, before looking at Isabel. “Say, thank you, Daddy.”
“Thank you, Dada?” Isabel says, smiling through the mess on her face as they all burst into laughter.
“Okay, new plan,” Steve says after they work in tandem to get as much icing off Isabel as they can without soap and water. He points to the tray of bare cookies before turning to her. “You lay down the base icing, I will smooth it out, and Miss Sticky over there can be on sprinkles duty.”
She laughs. “You do know she’s just going to throw too many sprinkles on it, right?”
“Ah, but that’s the beauty of giving her already iced cookies,” he says, wiggling his eyebrows. “There’s only so many sprinkles that can stick before the rest just falls off.”
When his expression turns smug, she can only roll her eyes.

The sun’s only begun to sink low into the horizon, casting a halo of warm light across the city, when a chilly breeze blows by, prompting Steve to adjust his scarf to rest more snuggly around his neck. While stopping at a park seems like a ridiculous idea in late December, the decision was strategic. As the saying goes, hell hath no fury like a toddler hyped on sugar, and he and Natasha weren’t about to tempt fate by not providing Isabel with an opportunity to expend all the energy provided by an afternoon spent consuming ludicrous amounts of icing.   While Isabel explores the surroundings on the patch of grass before them, he and Natasha sit on the nearby bench, a pile of rocks and weeds that their daughter has discovered and given to them for safe keeping only growing by the minute between them. He looks at Natasha, who’s busy admiring the scenery, to see the box of their leftover cookies resting on her lap, and instantly, the sight brings a smile to his face. Growing up in his mother’s bakery, the smell of butter and sugar in the air always had a way of evoking good feelings in him – a clear sign that wonderful things, usually in the form of a sweet treat, were to come. Today, though, as the three of them laughed and decorated cookies, he finds that those good feelings are akin to glee.    The sound of Isabel’s laughter ringing melodiously in the air catches their attention, and when they turn, they can only chuckle when they see her begin to follow a hapless duck a few feet away. He shakes his head. “Why do I feel like we should be helping that duck?”   “Because you know what your daughter is like when she’s only running on sugar and no afternoon nap,” Natasha says matter-of-factly, shooting him a knowing look. “Also, that duck’s never gonna see her again anyway. We, on the other hand, have to take her home and deal with the inevitable crash from her sugar high.” She crosses her arms over her chest. “Believe me, the duck can take one for the team right now.”   “She was a bit of a menace the other night when I let her have a cupcake after dinner,” he says, nodding in concession. “But, hell, if she isn’t so easy to love.”   “Confusing, isn’t it?” she asks, to which he hums in agreement. “One minute, you want to pull your hair out because she’s acting like you’re torturing her when really you’re just trying to put her shoes on-”   “But then the next she’s hugging you and telling you she loves you?” he finishes with a smirk.   “Exactly!” she says, throwing her head back in laughter. “But like you said, she’s just the sweetest thing ever. Really intuitive, too. You’d think at her age, she wouldn’t understand when you’re having a bad day, but then just when you’re feeling really down, you get a random hug from her…” She sighs, looking off to where Isabel is. “And suddenly everything doesn’t seem so bad.”   He follows Natasha’s line of sight, smiling when he sees that Isabel’s turned her attention to some flowers, before turning back to her. “We made a pretty good kid, didn’t we?”   Her green eyes are brimming with pride as she looks at him. “Yeah,” she says, “we did.”   He does not respond with words. Instead, he just holds her gaze as they share a smile, because truly, what else is there to say. If there’s anything these last few days have proven, it’s that when it comes down to it, Isabel is a reminder that despite everything that’s gone on between them in the last few years, all the hurt that they’ve unintentionally caused one another and the distance they’ve placed between them – physically or otherwise – they’ve always made a great team. And though the thought comes unbidden in his mind, he finds himself wondering how different things could have been if he had worked up the courage to tell her how he felt back then. But more importantly, for the first time in so long, he allows himself to question whether or not he was wrong to hold back.    Before he can give the thought any more consideration, though, Isabel makes their way to them, climbing into Natasha’s lap. “Hey, you,” Natasha says, looking away from him to wrap her arms around Isabel and kiss the top of her head. “Tired?”   Isabel shakes her head, resting her cheek against Natasha’s chest. “No.”   “If you say so,” Natasha says, chuckling under her breath.   “Do you want to grab dinner?” he asks. “I saw a Thai restaurant across the street. We could see if their Pad Thai compares to the one in the Village.”   “I would love to, but despite what this one says, she’s probably going to pass out soon,” Natasha says, and as if to prove her point, Isabel’s eyelids begin to flutter. “But how about you just come over to mine?” she then adds, her smile almost shy. “I don’t have Pad Thai, but I can whip us up some pasta.”   “You cook now?” he says, his brows all but shooting into his hairline.   The glare she sends his way is sharp, but it lasts only a second as she begins to laugh. “I’m not sure I appreciate the disbelief on your face.”   “No, I believe you…” he trails, grinning when she raises a brow at him. “I just remember having to put out a bacon-related fire in your apartment once upon a time.”   “You accidentally leave the burner on while you go to answer the door one time and some people never let you forget it,” she says, rolling her eyes before she joins him in snickering. When their laughter tapers, she tilts her head to the side. “So, what do you say?”   “I say to see is to believe,” he says, dissolving into laughter once more when she picks up one of the stones in the pile between them and chucks it at him. “I’m kidding! I’m kidding! I’d be honored to taste your cooking… and not have to put it out afterwards.”    She scoffs, but he can only really beam at the expression of mock hurt she makes. “You know what, Rogers.”     With Isabel slumbering peacefully in her car seat, their cab ride back to Natasha’s flat is steeped in comfortable silence. London after dark is breathtaking, but even as the stunning view passes him by, he finds that he can only focus on how felicitous this – the three of them coming back from a day well spent – all feels. He steals a glance at Natasha on the other side, her face lit only by the streetlights, but even so, the little smile on her lips as she looks out her window brings a smile to his own.    As if sensing his stare, she turns, her smile only widening when she catches him looking, and he can’t help but wonder if today has felt as good for her as it has for him. His lips part to ask the question, but before he can, the cab rattles as the driver runs over a bump. Like a reflex, he reaches out to make sure Isabel stays in place, his hand colliding with Natasha’s as she, too, does the same. They both nod at the cabbie’s subsequent apology, and the rest of the way, he does not bother to utter a word about how their hands remain atop of one another’s, nor does he ask questions when their fingers somehow wind up intertwined – but, and perhaps more saliently, neither does she.
When they arrive back at Natasha’s flat, he lifts Isabel to him, paying the driver as Natasha collects the car seat and Isabel’s bag and they walk up the stairs to her front door. It’s only when they’ve made their way inside her foyer and she’s taking her keys out of the lock that he realizes her lights were already on when they entered.   “Were you expecting someone?” he asks, turning to her.   “Not that I remember,” she says, mirroring his concerned expression as she takes in her already lit foyer. As if on cue, they hear the sound of her cupboard being pushed shut, and hurriedly, she begins to make her way towards the sound.   “Natasha, wait!” he says, his voice thick with worry as he follows her with lengthened strides. “There might be a-”   “What are you doing here?” he hears Natasha ask as she enters her kitchen. Confused, he follows her, stopping by the doorway when he sees her arms around a man, his hair dark as night and his frame towering over hers. “I haven’t seen you in days!”   “Had to pull another double shift,” the man says, his voice smooth as silk. “Luckily, my colleague was nice enough to relieve me a couple hours early, so I stopped by the supermarket and did some food shopping.”   “You’re a lifesaver,” Natasha says, and he catches himself looking towards her kitchen island where an array of fruits and vegetables are sitting along with a six-pack of Stella and a bottle of Beluga – her favorite vodka.  “Oh, Loki, this is Steve.”   At the sound of his name, he looks up just as Natasha and the man – Loki, he reminds himself – turns to him. Loki smiles, moving around the island to extend a hand to him. “Pleasure to meet you, Steve.”   “Likewise,” he says, shifting Isabel to free his other hand before shaking Loki’s. “I’m sorry, I-” His words are cut off when Isabel stirs, letting out a little whine. “Shh, it’s okay, sweetheart. We’re back home.” Isabel lifts her head off his shoulder, her forehead wrinkling as she grimaces, and quickly, he rubs her back soothingly. She turns in his arms, and when her eyes land on Loki, it’s almost on instinct that he holds her closer to him. “It’s okay, fig. It’s just momma’s-”   “Yo-ki?” Isabel says, her eyes lighting up with recognition. Before he knows it, she’s squirming in his arms, signaling to be let down. He obliges, staring dumbfoundedly as Loki bends down and Isabel runs into his open arms. “Yo-ki!”   “Hello, love,” Loki says, laughing and picking Isabel up as he stands. “I missed you! Did you have a marvelous time today?”   “Indeed she did,” Natasha says, and his head whips towards her to see her walk towards Isabel and Loki to tap Isabel’s nose. “I was actually about to make some-”   “Actually, Natasha,” he interrupts, his eyes going from Loki, to Isabel, and then to her. And though he does not remember reaching for it, he holds up his phone. “Something just came up with the gallery. I’m going to have to pass on dinner.”   “Oh, okay…” she says, blinking in surprise. “Something major?”   “No, um… just a misunderstanding,” he says before shaking his head. “You have that thing tomorrow at three, right? I’ll be back before then to pick up Izzie.”   “Right, yeah…” she looks at Isabel, lifting her out of Loki’s arms to place her down. “Say bye to Daddy, Iz.”   As Isabel walks towards him, he bends down to give her a hug. “Bye, fig. I’ll see you tomorrow, okay?”   “Dada, no!” Isabel says, stepping away from him. “Stay.”     “But it’s almost your bedtime, sweetheart,” he says, rubbing his hands up and down her arms consolingly. “Daddy will be back tomorrow, okay? I promise.”   Isabel’s bottom lip begins to quiver, but before the waterworks can begin, Natasha bends down next to them. “Izzie, baby, why don’t you show Loki the cookies you decorated, huh?”     “My goodness, you decorated some cookies?” he hears Loki say, and he’s relieved when Isabel turns towards Loki, a smile forming on her face as she nods.   The second Isabel begins to walk towards Loki, he gets up, turning away from the kitchen and making his way towards the front door. It’s only when he has one hand already on the knob that he hears Natasha call out to him, and he turns back to see her standing a few feet away, her eyes wide as she stares at him.   “Steve…” she says, her eyebrows furrowing. “Is everything okay?”   “Yeah,” he says, lifting a shoulder in a shrug. “You have nothing to worry about.” He nods curtly. “I’ll be back for Izzie tomorrow.”
He does not wait for her reply as he twists the knob and walks out, shutting the door behind him before all but running down the stairs. His footfalls are heavy on the concrete, but he does not dare look back as he makes his way down the block, ferociously trying to ignore the sinking feeling in his gut and the ache slowly but surely burning through his chest.

You weren’t sure how you were able to do it, but you finally had enough money for a down payment on a home. You scrimped and saved for years as best you could, you paid off the majority of your student loans, you built up your credit, and now you felt ready for this very adult step.
Your parents weren’t sure why you weren’t content with just renting. “What if you meet someone?” They’d ask you. “Then they could just move in with me, or we’d find another place. It’s an investment!” You’d reply. They had this vision in their head that you’re supposed to buy a home with a partner. It was the twenty-first century, you didn’t need anyone to help you...or so you thought.
The pre-approval process at the bank was lengthy, but thorough. They’d need to see your W2′s from two years prior, they needed to know how long you’ve been at your current job, and basically just how much money you had altogether. The mortgage specialist at the bank was very kind.
“So, you’re doing this all on your own?”
“I am.” You smile.
“Have you got real estate agent yet?”
“No.” You shrug. “You don’t really need when you’re the one buying do you? I can just call whoever’s showing the house and work with them.”
“Maybe in small towns, but in larger areas like this you’ll want a realtor, trust me. It doesn’t cost you anything either way. They can top shop, help you negotiate, all those kinds of things.”
“They also like to show you houses out of your price range.” You scoff.
“Not the honest ones. I get it, at the end of the day, they’re out there to make a quick buck, and the more the house is, the larger the cut they get. But I know a guy, he actually helped my son buy his first home. He was absolutely wonderful, and he’s a shark.” She goes through the many business cards on her desk. “Ah! Here it is, Harry Styles, he works for Greenfield Real Estate.”
You take the card from her and scan it over.
“Don’t they sell, like, really nice homes? They work with people looking for mansions.”
“Just give him a call, and tell him I sent you. You won’t regret it, trust me. Your pre-approval is only good for ninety days, so you’ll want to contact him soon.”
//
Your head was swimming, but you knew she had a point. Half the houses you favorited on realtor.com or zillow were sold already. It was a seller’s market for sure. Maybe you would need someone to help you negotiate...but did it have to be a man? Couldn’t you find a female realtor? You spent years becoming the strong, independent woman you came to be, and now it felt like you’d be surrendering to some stereotype.
However, after perusing on the Greenfield website, you see a picture of Harry. You bite your bottom lip, swallow some pride, and dial his number.
“Greenfield Real Estate, this is Harry.” You weren’t expecting the British accent, or the deep voice and drawl that came with it. “Hello?”
“Um, hi! Yeah, Doris at Hills Bank gave me your card...I’m a first time home buyer.” You want to smack yourself for how stupid you sound.
“Oh, I love Doris! I’ve worked with her a bunch. I actually helped her son buy his first home last year.”
“That’s what she told me.”
“Right, so, picking a realtor is sort of like dating, you wanna make sure you pick the right one. Why don’t we meet up for coffee somewhere locally so we can get to know each other a bit.”
Pushy, he was already wanting to meet you. Probably to have you sign your life away to be his client.
“Sure, we could do that.”
“Are you local? There’s a place on Bleaker Street that has great coffee.”
“Is it Monte Alto?”
“Yeah! That’s the one. When are you free?”
“I could meet you Friday during lunch my break.”
“Sounds great, I’m assuming noon?”
“Correct.”
“By the way, you didn’t tell me your name.”
“It’s Y/N.”
“Alright, Y/N, I’ll see you Friday at noon at Monte Alto.”
You take a huge breath after you hang up.
//
Friday rolled around, and you weren’t able to step out of the office until nearly 11:50. It would take a little more than ten minutes to get there, and you hated being late. You were happy you had at least looked up what Harry looked like so you’d be able to spot him once you were there.
Once you’re there, you see a man sitting on one of the cushioned chairs, looking out the window. It had to be him.
“Harry?”
He looks over at you and smiles. He stands up to shake your hand.
“Y/N?”
“Yes, hi, sorry I’m late, I’ve had meeting after meeting this morning. Fridays aren’t usually this busy.”
“No worries at all. Tell me, what’s your order?”
“Oh, I can get it myself. I’m gonna grab a bagel too.”
“Good idea, I’ll do the same. Now, what’ll you have?”
“Really...I can-”
“I know you can, but I invited you here, it would be rude to have you pay. Do this with all my perspective clients.”
“Well, don’t I feel special.” You say sarcastically. He chuckles softly as you both get in line.
You both order your drinks and food, and wait awkwardly for your names to be called, then you sit back down.
“Thank you.”
“You’re more than welcome. So, tell me, what’s your dream home?”
“Oh god, um, nice big kitchen, I love to cook when I actually have time. A room for entertaining. I’m usually the one to host friends. Two stories, a garage, three bedrooms would be ideal, but I’ll settle for two-”
“No settling.” He smirks. “Go on.”
“Um...well, so, three bedrooms, ideally I’d like a master with an en suite, but who doesn’t?” You watch as he makes notes on a little pad of paper. “I’d like a yard, but it doesn’t need to be huge. Bonus points if there’s a deck or patio, maybe even a pool, but I can live without those things.”
“And you’re buying this just for yourself, correct? No husbands or boyfriends I need to know about?”
“You know, I could have a girlfriend.”
“Shit, I’m sorry you’re right, um-”
“Relax, I’m teasing.” You chuckle. “But to answer your question, I am doing this alone. I feel like I’m ready for a house, so I want one.”
“Thought I put my foot in my mouth for a second there. I need to learn to just say partner.” He picks up his drink to take a sip, and that’s when you notice he has perfectly manicured nails. Interesting. “So it seems like you know how to be realistic about what you want, and you also have a dream list. What about projects, do they scare you?”
“I’m good with painting or even having to put new flooring in, but I’d like to stay away from any major reno.”
“Gotcha.” He makes another note. “And what price range are we working with here?”
“Let me just make a note on my phone, I’d rather not say out loud in case someone tries to rob me.”
He smiles and nods. He squints at your screen and makes a note.
“Great, good for you. What do you do for work?”
“I’m a physician, I work at a doctor’s office not too far from here. I’ve been there for two years, and I love what I do.”
“That’s great. So, Doris talked with you about balancing a mortgage and paying down your student loans?”
“They’re mostly paid for, actually. I got a lot of scholarships for my undergrad, and during med school I was awarded a pretty decent grant.”
“Perfect.” He scribbles some more notes and then puts his pad and pen down. “What do you want to know about me?”
“How long have you been a realtor for?”
“Six years, been with Greenfield since I started.”
“What made you get into it?”
“Love seeing people happy.”
“What about when someone buys below the asking price?”
“Doesn’t happen with me, not when I’m selling anyways. However, when I’m helping someone buy a home, well, let’s just say I’m pretty good at negotiating.” He smirks. “You’d be in good hands with me, but if you wanna shop around some more I’ll understand.”
“Do you work with first time buyers a lot?”
“Sometimes, it depends. I know a lot of them like to work with me. They’re usually young, I’m young. Makes for a more relatable experience.”
“Okay.” You look outside and think for a moment. “I think I’d like to work with you.”
He smiles big at you.
“Are there any homes you’ve had in mind that you’d like to start looking at? I can definitely see what open houses are out there too. People tend to make offers fast, but don’t let that scare you. The home has to feel right, if you want it, I’ll make sure you get it.”
“There were a few I’ve seen on realtor...” You take your phone out to show him. “I’d like to not have a super long commute either if I can help it.”
“Are you looking to grow into this home or is it more of a starter space for you?” You give him a funny look. “I just mean, like, would you be open to a condo or something like that.”
“Only if it was detached and didn’t have a high HOA.”
He nods and looks at some of the other homes you had favorited.
“So what I’m gonna do is go back to my office and run a few searched. Then I’ll text you a link to the home I find, and you can tell me which ones you like. Don’t be afraid to tell me you hate them either. Then if there’s a couple you wanna see, we’ll set up a time that works for you, and then I’ll contact the other realtor, sound good?”
“Sounds great.”
You shake hands again before leaving. As you make your way back to the office, you feel relieved. You had someone you could ask questions to, and someone basically on your side. Harry was nice, a salesman at heart, but nice.
//
Saturday morning you get a text from Harry.
Harry Styles - Hi Y/N, it was great meeting you yesterday. Here are some places I think you might like. Let me know what you think!
You liked how formal he was. You tap the link he sent you. The first couple were duds, but there were a few on here that actually peaked your interest.
You - Could we three of the home? The bottom three on the list.
Harry Styles - Sure! When would work for you?
You - I don’t work on Mondays, so that would be easiest. Timing doesn’t matter.
Harry Styles - I’ll contact the realtors and see what we can put together.
You - Thanks so much!
You felt really excited. You wondered if maybe you should invite your parents to come look at the houses with you, but maybe you would save that for a second look through once you actually find something. A house can look much different in pictures than it does in person.
//
Monday morning, around 9:30, you meet Harry at the first location. His car was parked in the driveway. He gets out when he sees you pull in. He had two coffees in hand.
“Morning.” He says to you. “Got you a coffee, I remembered your order.”
“Oh! Um, thanks.” You take it from him.
“I’ve already gone in and unlocked the doors and turned the lights on. The other realtor isn’t here, which is perfectly fine. Take your time, feel free to walk around outside before heading in too.”
You smile and nod. The front was beautifully landscaped, and there was a gate leading to the backyard. He follows you out that way. You listen as he explains when the home was built and why the people were selling it. There a nice deck that had been recently put on, no pool though, but there was room for one. You go up the stairs of the deck and go in through the sliding glass door.
“Kitchen was recently renovated within the last five years. All appliances come with the place.”
“It’s beautiful.” You run your fingers over the nice granite counter tops.
As you scope out the rest of the house, you’re not as impressed as you were with it when you first walked in. The bedrooms were small, and barely had any storage. The basement wasn’t in the best condition either.
“Definitely a no, but a good first experience nonetheless.”
Harry looks down at his watch as he nods.
“Wanna follow me to the next place then?”
“Sure.”
Same thing happened at house number two and three. You just weren’t wowed. You sigh heavily as you lean against your car.
“Don’t get discouraged, Y/N. It’s better to know what you don’t like. We can keep looking. When I go into the office tomorrow I can run another search. Maybe we can look at some condos.”
“That might be good. Maybe somewhere with people my age? It would be cool to be in a little community.”
“Definitely.”
“Thanks...I hope I haven’t been a pain with the things I don’t like.”
“Not at all. This is a really big purchase, you should get what you want.”
//
It took three more weeks of meeting up with Harry on various days to find a place you liked. On a Saturday evening, he brought you over to a condo that was detached, had a garage, a community gym and pool. It had three bedrooms, and two and a half baths. One being an en suite for the master bedroom. The kitchen was gorgeous and flowed into a dining/living area. You were thrilled.
“Harry...” You look at him. “It’s perfect.”
“Really, you like it?”
“I love it!” You squeal and hug him without thinking. “Sorry.” You blush.
“It’s fine, it’s exciting.”
“I’d like to put an offer in. The price is rate and the HOA is reasonable. It’s not too far from work. I’d be able to entertain, the backyard is fenced in. There was even security at the gate! This is my home, I can feel it.”
“Fantastic. The paperwork can take some time. Would you wanna fill everything out over dinner?”
“Um...sure...”
“Plus, it gives you a chance to see what places nearby are like. We passed some nice restaurants on the way here.”
You follow him to a nice pizza place a couple of miles away. He bring a large packet of paper and a couple of pens in with him.
“On the way here I called the other realtor to let him know an offer was coming their way.”
“Thanks.”
You both get seated and are given some water. He takes the papers out and explains what you would need to sign, and what your offer would mean. Harry said you could definitely low ball the sellers, so you asked for about $15K less than the asking price.
“They probably won’t accept, but most people don’t on the first offer. This just gives us a good starting point.”
“And you think the six grand in closing costs is good?”
“Yeah, totally reasonable. That’ll be about half of it. Sometimes, you can get more money off after the home inspection. Once a price is settled, you’ll want to schedule that right away. I have some names of some great home inspectors.”
“Would you be there for that?”
“I would. I’m there for all of it. The other realtor will be there too.”
“Okay good. I’d feel better with you there.”
As you begin to sign the documents, a waiter comes over.
“Good evening folks, can I start you off with anything to drink?”
“I’d love a glass of rose please.” You say.
“Just a Corona for me, thanks.”
The waiter nods and leaves you be.
“Did you want to just split a pizza?” Harry asks looking down at the menu.
“Sure, what do you like? I usually just get green peppers and mushrooms.”
“Works for me. Would you mind this cauliflower crust?”
“Not at all! I prefer that, actually.”
‘Perfect.” He smiles.
When the waiter comes back, Harry orders your pizza. He watches as you finish up all the paperwork. He checks over everything to make sure you signed everything.
“I’ll get this all scanned and sent over tomorrow.”
“Do you ever take a day off?”
“Yes and no. The realtor world is funny. Sometimes I’m in the office all day and then I wont hear from a client until 8PM. I’m not helping someone buy, I’m helping someone sell. I’m always busy.”
“Sorry to take up your Saturday night...”
“No, don’t be. I’d just be home working.” He shrugs and takes a sip of his beer. “It’s your Saturday night I’m more worried about.”
“Oh please.” You laugh. “My friends know I’ve been busy with this, they understand. Besides when I showed them who you were...” You stop yourself from finishing the sentence.
“No, please, go on.” He smirks.
“They just, they saw your picture on the Greenfield website, that’s all.” You blush.
The waiter comes over with the pizza, and thankfully it breaks a bit of the tension. You each take a slice and dig in.
“This is delicious.” You say.
“Yeah, never been here before, I’ll definitely have to come back.” He takes another sip of his beer. “Once that condo is yours, I fully expect an invite to your house warming, by the way. I like to know my clients are good to go.”
“I definitely won’t be a stranger.”
When you and Harry are done, he walks you out to your car. He gives you a small hug goodbye as well. You felt like you just had a date, but there was no way you did.
//
After going back and forth twice, your offer was accepted. You set up a home inspection with one of the names Harry had given you. He meets you at the house when it’s time, and you’re able to meet the other realtor. A woman, who was a little too delighted to see Harry. You felt jealous when they hugged. However, he stayed close to you and took notes while the inspector was talking.
You made sure to ask a lot of questions. There were no major things that alarmed you. All of the information was just a lot to take in, and you were feeling slightly overwhelmed. You should have brought your parents, or another friend. Was Harry a friend at this point? As the inspector was putting together a full report for you, and getting your email, the other realtor was talking to Harry.
“So, I thought you were only in the selling game right now.” She smirks at him.
“Once in a while I take on a buyer.” He shrugs. “It’s good commission.”
“Yeah, thanks, can’t wait to split it with you.” She rolls her eyes. “But I do love when our paths cross.”
“Mhm.” He looks over at you and then back to the realtor. “The previous owners took great care of this place.”
“Yeah, they did. The only reason they moved is because they’re daughter had a baby and they wanted to be closer to her.”
“Ah, classic.”
“Are you doing anything later?”
“Um…well…Y/N is probably going to have questions and stuff, so I’ll probably be busy with her for a bit.”
“Okay, but, like, tonight, are you free? We could grab a drink.”
“I…”
“Harry?” You say, walking over to them. “Everything’s all set. He said I should have the radon and water tests by next week.”
“Perfect. You’ll be able to make a final decision and add anything to an addendum then.”
“It was nice to meet you.” You shake the woman’s hand.
“Same to you. Look forward to hearing from you soon.”
“Y/N, I took a lot of notes, is there anything you want to go over?”
“Yeah, that would be great.”
“See ya Margaret, we’ll be in touch.” He shakes her hand and leaves her standing there, shocked.
Harry walks with you outside, and you agree on a bar to meet up at. You both grab drinks and Harry goes over his notes with you. He gives you the name of a good plumber since you mentioned you’d want to update a few fixtures.
“What about a painter? Know of anyone that can help with that?”
“You don’t need to waste your money on a professional. Painting’s not that hard.” He chuckles.
“Well, I am not very skilled when it comes to that kind of stuff. Plus, I won’t really have the time to do it myself, and I’d wanna get it done before I move.”
“You could get all done in a couple of weekends no problem, you just need some friends that know how to paint.” He puts a toothpick in his mouth and fiddles with it. “I know how to paint.”
“You do?”
“Sure.” He shrugs. “Sometimes sellers need to fix up their houses quickly. I’ve come to the rescue on more than one occasion.”
“That’s nice of you.”
“I don’t make any money if I don’t. No one wants to be an ugly house.” He takes a sip of his drink. “I guess what I’m saying is, I could help you paint. You’re about to have a mortgage payment on your hands.”
“Pending the inspection report.” You smirk.
“Right.” He smiles.
“Did you offer up the same service for Doris’ son?”
“No.” He says smugly. “He already knew how to paint.”
“That other woman before, what was her name? Margaret?”
“Yeah, what about her?”
“I heard her ask you out…”
“She didn’t, she wasn’t…uh…” He scratches the back of his neck. “Sometimes we go for drinks if we end of working on the same house. Nothing more than that really.”
“So, you’re not, like, seeing her.”
“God, no. That would be a major conflict of interest.”
“Do you always go out for drinks with your clients?”
“Sometimes…I know some people have clients over to their home to do paperwork, but I didn’t think you’d feel super comfortable coming over to some guy’s house you barely know.”
“How considerate of you.” You giggle.
“Did it bother you that she asked me out tonight?”
You nearly choke on your drink.
“What? No, why, uh, why would it have bothered me?”
“Because…if someone had done the same to you in front of me I would have been bothered, but to be fair, I’m a pretty jealous guy.” He finishes his drink and orders another one.
“How many times does this happen?”
“What?”
“You hitting on your clients.”
“Is that what I’m doing?” He fake gasps. “And no, I don’t usually do this. I’m a little embarrassed, actually. Not very professional of me to have a crush on your client.” Your eyes widen and your jaw drops slightly. “Sorry, I hope I’m not making you uncomfortable.”
“No! I…I’m just a little surprised that you’re into me, is all.”
“Why? You’ve got a great career, you’re super independent, and you’re really funny.”
“How do you not already have a girlfriend?”
“I’m really busy, like, all the time. I’m able to take vacations here and there, but you see how much I work. Any time I date it doesn’t last because people don’t understand the job. You’re a doctor, you get it. You must be busy going to classes trying to stay up to date on everything.”
“I am, I’m definitely busy a lot…but I make time for friends.”
“So do I. My friends don’t get offended if I have to cancel or reschedule, or they at least don’t take it personally.”
“I get what you’re saying…dating is hard when you have a demanding job.”
“Exactly.”
“So…are you going to ask me out?”
“Can’t, not until this is all done at least. Conflict of interest.”
“Oh.”
“But when I do, are you saying you’ll say yes?”
“I guess we’ll find out when you ask, won’t we?”
//
Harry helped you go over the inspection report once you got it. You asked for some money towards getting the furnace serviced, and the previous owners thought it was a reasonable request. You were able to close a couple of weeks later. Typically the realtor comes to the bank with the buyer on the big day.
“Harry!” Doris squeals as she hugs him. “Great to see you.”
“Same to you.”
“Love when we get to see each other like this.”
“Same here, how’s your son?”
“Oh, he’s great. Y/N, have a seat. We have lots of things to sign.”
You sign what you need to. Doris gives you a gift bag with some wine glasses. Harry hands over a bottle of champagne to you as well. It was very exciting. You were officially a home owner.
“Thank you so much.” You shake Doris’ hand before leaving the bank.
Harry grabs your wrist once you’re both outside.
“Congratulations.”
“Thanks, I literally couldn’t have done it without you.” You give him a quick hug. “My parents are gonna meet me there soon so they can check it out. I think they wanna take me out to eat to celebrate.”
“That’s great.” He clears his throat. “What, uh, what are you doing tomorrow?”
“Continuing to pack.” You laugh. “But, um, I could make myself available in the evening.” You smile.
“I’m having a little pool party tomorrow. Bunch of my friends are coming over, I’d love to have you over too, if you felt comfortable.”
“That sounds amazing! Can I bring anything?”
“Just your beautiful self.”
//
Your parents were very impressed with your new purchase. You did well. Saturday morning you continued your packing adventure, trying to make sure you properly labeled your boxes. You needed to make sure none of your medical journals got lost.
Even though Harry had offered over and over to teach you how to paint, your parents offered to pay for a painting crew for you, just to make things go faster. Once that was done you’d be able to move. You search your dresser for a suitable bathing suit. You weren’t sure how much skin to actually show.
“Ah ha!” You find your green, strapless one-piece that had a cute cut out in the upper part of the stomach. You’re also able to find a cute cover up dress to throw on over it.
In the latter part of the afternoon, you drive over to Harry’s. You were impressed by the neighborhood he was able to live in. All of the houses were huge. When you pull up to his house you wonder what he needed such a big house for. Maybe he entertained a lot too, just like you did.
You – just pulled up!
Harry Styles - come right around back!
You walk around to where you can hear music playing and people laughing. There were plenty of people already in Harry’s large in-ground pool.
“Y/N!” Harry waves over to you.
Damn, he has a lot of tattoos. You think to yourself.
“Hi, Harry!”
He comes over to you and kisses you on the cheek without really thinking.
“Glad you could make it. Make yourself comfortable. Plenty of food, plenty of pool.” He chuckles.
Harry’s friends were really nice and welcoming, you didn’t feel too out of place. His eyes couldn’t help but scan over your body the second you took your coverup off. Turns out Harry was a master on the grill. He made sure to pay attention to while still being a good host to his friends. It was a fun party. As the night dwindled you wanted to make some sort of move.
“You know, I’ve seen your entire backyard, but I’ve yet to be given a your of your home.”
“You’d like that?”
“It’s only fair, you’ve seen mine.” You wink at him.
He leads you inside.
“Well, you’ve seen the kitchen, obviously.”
He takes you through the first floor and then leads you upstairs. He explains that he has all the extra rooms so his family has their own space for when they come to visit.
“And this is my room, but you don’t have to-“
“No, let’s see it.” You smile.
He smiles back and opens the door. Your jaw drops when you see how much space there is. There were two closets, both filled with nice clothes.
“Come check out the bathroom. I had some work done to it last year.”
“Why do you have a double vanity?”
“For guests.” He blushes. “My last girlfriend actually, she liked having her own sink. Apparently I have too many products and they can get in the way.” He clears his throat. “Anyways, I had everything redone last year. I know a great bathroom guy if you ever wanna update anything.”
“You have a guy for everything.” You giggle. “And you do have a lot of products, two sinks makes sense.” You walk out and back into the bedroom. “So…”
“So…”
“What date number would you consider this to be?”
“Legally, the first…not legally…” He grins. “Think I’ve lost track.” He steps closer to you. “My friends liked you.”
“I liked them.” You wrap your arms around his neck. “And I like you.”
“I like you too.” His hands move to your hips. “And I really like this bathing suit. Haven’t been able to take my eyes off you all day.”
You both smile and continue to make eye contact. Harry looks down at your lips and leans in. He presses his lips to yours, and you find yourself grasping at him to pull him closer. You couldn’t remember the last time you were intimate with someone, but it had definitely been too long. You were ravenous. You open your mouth him and he groans into you. You both shuffle back to the bed and fall on top of it.
“If this feels too fast, just let me know.” He breathes as you move to straddle him.
“Harry, I want you.” You cup his cheek and he moves to kiss your palm. “But, if it feels too fast for you, we can cool it.”
“I want you too, I just wanted to make sure you didn’t feel pressured or anything.”
“I don’t, but thank you.”
You lean down to kiss him again. His hands move to the back of your bathing suit.
“Gotta get this off you.” He grunts.
You get off him to stand up.
“I’ll show you mine if you show me yours.”
“Seems to be our little theme.” He smirks.
Harry stands up and takes his trunks off. Your eyes grow wide when you look down at his hard cock. He steps towards you and helps you out of your swim suit.
“I have a fun idea.” He says as he kisses down your neck. “We’ve been in the sun all day, let’s go hop in the shower.”
You smile at him and nod. He leads you into the bathroom and gets the water in the shower going. He yanks you inside and gets you under the warm water. He backs you up to the wall and press you against it. His hands roam your body as his lips find yours again.
“I’ve thought about this so many times.” He says.
“You have?”
“Mhm, there were so many times in the houses I showed you that I just wanted to take you right then and there.”
He nips at your jaw as his hands knead your breasts. You wrap your arms back around his neck. You feel his hard cock press against your hip and it makes you whimper. One of his hands slides down your stomach. He looks at you to make sure it’s alright and you nod yes.
Your head rolls back against the tile as his fingers slips between your legs. His thumb works your clit while he works two of his fingers inside you.
“Oh my god.” You gasp and grind your hips toward his hand. You reach for his length and start to pump him.
You both were panting. You have to let go of him to clutch onto his shoulders as you release around his fingers.
“Please.” You moan. “Fuck me. I have an IUD.”
Harry kisses you and hooks one of his arms under one of your legs so he can push in at a better angle. You bite down on his bottom lip, causing him to groan loudly.
“You’re so fucking sexy.” He says into your ear as he thrusts in and out of you.
“You feel so good, Harry, fuck.”
He pulls out of you, turns you around, and presses back inside. His chest was flush with your back. You claw at the tile as he rocks in and out of you. One of his hands snakes around to rub your clit and the other works one of your breasts.
You feel a flood of things wash over you, but mostly it was another incredible orgasm. You could get used to this.
“Shit, I’m gonna come. Where do you want it?” He grunts.
“Inside me.”
“Jesus.” He groans and releases inside you. You moan out at the warm feeling.
//
“This is the softest robe in the world.”
“Glad you like it. You can wear it anytime.”
You both were cuddled up in his bed, munching on some fruit while watching TV.
“Do you have parties like this often?”
“Only when I’ve finally told a tougher home.”
“You were working with someone while working with me? How did you find the time?”
“Babe, I was working with like six other people.” He smirks.
“Doris was right, you are a shark.” You laugh.
“Gotta be able to afford this place, right?” He tucks some hair behind your ear. “You’ll stay tonight? I’m a cuddler.”
“Of course.” You giggle. “I’ll have to have you over for my next game night, you can meet all of my friends.”
“Like I said, I fully expect to be invited to your house warming.”
“That too.”
“But I’d be happy to meet your friends. Are they doctors too?”
“A couple of them are, yeah. We met in med school. Wouldn’t have made it through without them.”
You two stay up for hours, legs tangled in each other, telling each lots of things about one another. It was easy to talk to Harry, it had been since you met. He felt the same about you too. You both knew it wouldn’t be so easy to just get together. Harry’s schedule was unpredictable, and your days were long and tiring. But, neither of you really cared because you both felt like you found your person.
Harry loved game nights with your friends. He was a tad competitive, but it just made for more laughs. You both liked having your separate spaces, but you enjoyed when he could actually spend the night, or when you could spend the night at his place. Neither of you took it personally when the other was too busy or too tired either. Once you felt truly settled, you wrote Doris a thank you note for setting you up with the best realtor and the love of your life.

For the prompt thing: kaiba + yuugi + professionalism!
this was fun!! thanks to @dxmichelle for the retail stories. kaiba as a retail worker is like me when I was a retail worker because when i worked at a barnes and noble, i spent a LOT of time perfectly squaring the books. anyway all the kaibacorp adventure park castmembers get some fat fucking pay raise/benefit boosts after this
***
This was all Jounouchi’s fucking fault and Seto was never agreeing to any stupid fucking bets again. When did he become a good duelist, instead of just a lucky one? And he knew it, too, announcing his plans to win the Domino City Invitational with the kind of brash, easy confidence that was a front for nothing, a Roman wall around nothing, with nothing he needed to defend on the other side. As hard to read as a coloring book. Asshole.
“The gods have struck men down for less hubris than this,” Seto snapped, over a game of poker at Yuugi’s weekly game night. Mokuba had badgered him into attending after their return from the yearly strategic planning retreat with the board. You need to be around normal people! No more sharks in people suits!
“So what? You don’t believe in higher powers, Rich Boy.”
“In my experience, a god and a higher power are two separate things."
“Oh, okay, Neeshee. Maybe you don’t believe in me, but you do believe in games,” Jounouchi said.
“Devastating insight,” Seto said. “And it’s Nietzsche.”
“Bless you. Don't be rude and sneeze into a tissue next time. Let’s make a bet. When I win the Invitational, you… pick up all my shifts at the Kame Game Shop for a week. I take home all the paychecks, but you do all the work. You know, bog-standard capitalism.”
Seto rolled his eyes. “When you lose, you give the jet a good wash and wax. Then you throw your deck and your Duel Disk into the river, and never duel again.”
“Deal. And I tell you what, Kaiba. One day we’re gonna meet across the field, and you’re going to lose, but it won’t even bother you, because you had just so much fun,” Jounouchi said, extending his hand across the table, with a savage grin.
“Don’t fucking threaten me,” Seto said, shaking his hand.
Asshole! Jounouchi stomped the competition with an ease Seto hadn’t seen since he was fourteen and unceremoniously sacking Inspector Haga at the Pan Pacific Final.
At least Yuugi gave him his own nametag, instead of making him wear Jounouchi’s: a plastic, turtle-shaped badge with a white space for his name. There was a line below it that said MY FAVORITE GAME IS... chess, Seto wrote in moodily, with the marker. Then he affixed it to his dark-green apron, neatly and precisely, just over his heart.
Yuugi nudged the curtain into the stock room aside, wearing a matching apron and smiling like he was trying very hard not to laugh.
“Ready to clock in - oh, no. This is the Kame Game Shop,” he said, reaching up to fix Seto’s name tag, tweaking it to sit slightly at an angle. “Perfect right angles are for squares.”
“A KaibaCorp Adventure Park castmember wouldn’t be caught dead with their nametag this sloppy,” Seto snapped.
“It’s not sloppy. It’s jaunty and playful,” Yuugi corrected. “Now, let’s review. You’re an engineering prodigy, so I’m sure you can handle the register. What do we do when a customer walks in?”
Seto sighed, hands bracing on his hips as his eyes rolled towards the ceiling. That asshole picked up five full days of double shifts.
“Welcome them when they walk in,” he said, as Yuugi nodded along. “Ask if they need any help. If they’re just browsing, leave them alone. Provide recommendations if they ask.”
“And?” Yuugi prompted, raising his eyebrows.
“Wrap and bag their purchases and thank them for wasting my fucking time.”
Yuugi reached up, pressing the tips of his index fingers into Seto’s cheeks. “No! Smile!”
Seto bared his teeth.
“Can’t believe people call you a bad sport,” Yuugi said. “Maybe just smize instead. Go! Clock in! Upsell your own Duel Disk!”
Seto let out a final dramatic huff, took the clipboard off its hook on the wall, and added his billion-dollar contract signature to the timesheet, below several rows of Jounouchi’s scrawl.
***
After four hours, Seto took his lunch break, an all-too-brief thirty minutes in the alley behind the Game Shop, leaning back with one foot propped against the wall, answering emails on his phone with all the speed and fury his thumbs could muster. It was high summer. Vines spilled over the wall on the other side of the alleyway, limp and vibrating with heat. Even the shade under the wall was warm.
The side door opened. He turned his head, preparing a choice little bon mot for Yuugi, and paused, his breath hitching in his chest with a wild regret, birdlike, startled suddenly out of hiding.
He stared at Sugoroku, privately cursing Jounouchi for the nth time for making the fucking bet, winning the fucking Invitational, and putting him here in this fucking alleyway, staring at Sugoroku. It was too late to go back inside. Sugoroku stared back, hoary-haired, stooped under the weight of his years. Even wizened, with skin like old, pale leather, the family resemblances were clear: the same big, warm eyes, the same bright smile, no less weakened for age.
He shuffled out the door, dragging a small garbage bag of recycling beside him.
“Open that up and drop this in, will you please? My back’s not what it used to be.”
“Yes,” Seto said, rapidly stooping to take the bag. Should he add sir? Yes, sir? He hadn’t said 'sir' to anyone in ten years. What was he supposed to say? Sorry. I was not myself. I was myself, but the worst version. It was the beta release of me and we have removed the bugs (the murder bugs) in advance of stable release. All remaining bugs are acceptable. We have added accurate legal and medical disclaimers to all our SolidVision and Virtual World products about how the sensory intensity of KaibaCorp proprietary holographic technology may exacerbate existing heart conditions. I am taking good care of her and I love her and she loves me. Who? Her. The dragon.
He dropped the bag into the recycling bin several steps away and turned around to face Sugoroku, summoning his resolve with an inhale, exhale, firm and deep.
“How’s your first day?” Sugoroku said.
“My company isn’t going down in flames without me,” Seto said. “Color me surprised.”
“How’s your first day here?”
“Enthralling. The adrenaline high of consumer retail is really just something else - ”
“Speak up, I can’t hear you over all that racket you’re making,” Sugoroku said. Seto paused, bewildered, mouth half-open - and shut it, color flaring across his face.
“Uh - fine,” he muttered. “It’s fine. I helped an eight-year-old pick out a board game.”
“Oh?”
“Yes. She came in with all the allowance she’d saved up and she wanted something she could play with her sister. I sold her on mancala."
"That's a classic. Not a board game, but a classic. And hard to sell to children."
Seto scoffed. "I hate the crap they pass off as board games these days, with all the… fiddly, little plastic pieces and the arcane rules. Children get drawn in by the colors, but they don't have patience for the rules, so it ends up forgotten at the bottom of a bookshelf somewhere with half the pieces sucked up in the vacuum cleaner. Mancala is simple. You can play it with a patch of dirt and a handful of gravel. But if you want to win, you need to play with skill and wit. It's timeless. It’s elegant."
"Well, you've sold me. I haven’t played mancala in years. Shall we play tomorrow? During your lunch break?"
Seto said nothing, resisting the urge to bite his lip, a bad habit and a sign of nervousness.
“Yuugi speaks very highly of you, you know,” Sugoroku said. “I’d love to know why.”
He chuckled and shuffled back inside, leaving Seto fuming with an odd, stomach-clenching embarrassment.
He checked his phone. Three more minutes left of his lunch break, and his feet were aching. He should’ve worn different shoes, not the Chelsea boots. Tomorrow. Mancala? Damn Jounouchi to hell. Better shoes.
***
“Excuse me,” the woman said. “Do you have Legendary Heroes II?”
Seto abandoned his task of aligning board game boxes at perfect right angles. Fuck jaunty and playful.
“No. That’s not out until December,” he said. The production issues on Legendary Heroes II were a fucking nightmare, and the thought of making his game developers crunch - making them miserable, overworked, and more likely to quit and get snapped up by Schroeder Corp - gave him hives. So he’d pushed release back to December, allowing the small hit to his stock under the rationale that the holiday retail season would make up for it. But she didn’t need to know that.
“But - it’s my son’s birthday next Saturday, and Legendary Heroes is his favorite game,” she said, hands clenching loosely by her stomach, a gesture of pleading.
“I’m delighted to hear it. It does not change the fact that the game literally does not exist,” Seto said.
“Can you just check in the back? He’s been asking about this for months now,” she said, and Seto clicked his teeth, face slipping into a snarl - from the corner of his eye, he saw Yuugi, watching him.
Smile, he mouthed, and pressed his fingers into his own cheeks, putting on a manic, plastic grin.
“Of course. I’ll be right back,” Seto said, smiling, and stormed away. As expected, he did not find Legendary Heroes II in the stock room. He dawdled, checking his email, firing off a few replies, advising Mokuba on the right way to handle the zesty temperament of their general counsel - this’ll be fun, Mokuba said, I get to run KaibaCorp without you, like, dying or something - WHAT? - and stashed his phone back into his apron pocket.
“My apologies,” he said, returning to the woman. “We don’t have it in stock. If you’d like to pre-order it, it’ll be available just in time for Christmas. Just log on to the KaibaCorp website and enter the Kame Game Shop as your pick-up location. If you’re still looking for a birthday gift, I strongly suggest the new Duel Disk. The design is much better for children than the old one - lighter and more streamlined, with less intense haptics. If he already has a Duel Disk, he can bring that in for a trade-in.”
“Oh, perfect!” she said. “We'll do that. Thank you. You’ve been so helpful.”
“You’re welcome. Have a fantastic day,” Seto said, still smiling. He watched her leave and returned to his board game boxes, feeling hideously, fabulously smug. A customer walked in, carrying a bare Duel Disk under his arm, and Seto shot him a cheerful welcome. The man ignored him, heading straight to Yuugi at the counter.
***
Yuugi swallowed, squared his shoulders, and lifted his chin.
"I'm sorry. We cannot accept a Duel Disk return without a box or a receipt," he said. Clearly stolen.
"But I bought it here two weeks ago. And the stupid piece of shit is defective," the man said. "I want my money back!"
Loud enough that Seto, re-stocking towards the front of the store, turned towards them, with open curiosity.
"What's the nature of the defect?" Yuugi said.
"It just doesn't fucking work. I don't know what else to tell you," the guy said. "Are you gonna do the return or not?!"
His least favorite type of customer: smashing reason apart with the baseball bat of belligerence. Yuugi steeled himself for the inevitable slew of insults.
"Sir. I can't do the return without a receipt - "
A hand came down on his shoulder, pulling him with polite insistence out of the way. Seto, with a canny, feline smile, the kind that foretold bloodshed on the dueling field.
"Oh no, Yuugi," he said. "Let me handle this."

idk you yet: come hang out
reggie peters x oc
Tumblr media
you’re working so damn hard, you forgot what you like
November
The problem with Reggie not telling the boys he had date plans was that, though they were on a brief touring break, Luke wanted them to stay busy. Every time he sat down to text William, Luke popped up with, “Hey, you ready to work on stuff for our next album.”
Normally he loved the work ethic. It was easy to get into Luke’s excitement and to write with him. Luke was incredibly creative and loved immediate feedback from his band members while also respecting their suggestions.
But when he just wanted a break to head back to San Jose to see William, it just didn’t seem like it would happen. The best possible outcome would be that he gets so much stuff done at the beginning of the month that Reggie would have more time for their tentatively scheduled date.
Wanna facetime?
Reggie smiled at the text and looked around their shared apartment. He knew Luke and Alex were home, in their room, and he was pretty sure Bobby was out, so it seemed unlikely that they’d actually want to work on anything without him.
Sure
Walking over to his room, Reggie collapsed onto his bed, smiling brightly as he answered the call. A tired looking William filled his screen and an ache in his chest that he didn’t realize was there was soothed.
“Hey, Reg.”
“Hey, Will, what’s up?”
William hummed, “Nothing much. About to nap before our game tonight, but I missed you.”
“Aw,” Reggie teased, “I’m more important than sleep.”
“Absolutely,” William told him earnestly.
It shocked Reggie into silence a few seconds before he managed to stutter out, “Well, I just hope it doesn’t throw your game off today.”
“You’re watching right?”
Squinting at his phone, Reggie slowly answered, “Yeah. I haven’t missed one yet.”
“I know, I just wanted to make sure. Hockey isn’t exactly your first choice to watch.”
His voice sounded a little timid, and Reggie bit his lip, “I mean I won’t watch any other teams, but I love watching you play.”
“That’s good to know,” William laughed, “can’t have the boy I like being a Kings fan.”
Reggie played dumb, “The Kings?”
“Oh hush, I know you know who they are.”
“I do, I was just trying to make you feel better.”
William laughed again, head tossed back, “Well you succeeded. My ego is sufficiently inflated.”
“Good. Hopefully you carry that on the ice tonight.”
“Always do.”
His eyes were starting to flutter a bit and Reggie smiled at the almost adorable sight. William flinched and shook himself awake with a loud yawn, so Reggie told him, “I’ll let you get some sleep. Talk to you tonight?”
“Yeah, definitely. Counting down the days until you get here.”
“I can’t wait either.”
William hung up a few seconds later, and Reggie got off his bed. Maybe, he thought to himself, he should start planning a date. Sure, William knew more about San Jose, but he didn’t want William to do all the heavy lifting. Reggie was terrified he’d eventually get tired of being the only one putting in effort.
So, he grabbed one of his many notebooks from his bookshelf and his laptop to start googling date spots in San Jose. Reggie scrolled and checked reviews, taking notes on his favorite places for future dates if not the first.
Truthfully, he had no clue if William wanted to do something simple for the first date or do something fun. They talked a lot and had gotten to know each other pretty well already, which was usually the first date activity, so they could probably afford to actually do something if they wanted to.
Biting his lip, he stared at the page. Maybe there were too many options, it looked a bit all over the place. Flipping the page, he started grouping the ideas into activities, formal, and casual. It made him feel a bit better, more organized and easier to pitch to William.
By the time he finished, it was almost game time, so Reggie put on the Sharks pride shirt he’d bought at William’s recommendation and wandered back out to the kitchen. Grabbing some leftovers to heat up, Reggie flipped on the TV and turned to the channel that normally played Sharks games.
Pre-game commentary started, and he sat on the couch to wait for the microwave to finish up. They were talking about some players that Reggie slightly recognized from William’s stories, and he pulled up the roster on his phone just as his food finished reheating.
Moving back over to the couch, Reggie pulled his feet up underneath him and scrolled through the roster while he waited for dinner to cool. He started matching names to faces, smiling when he heard them talking about William and his three game scoring streak.
“The Sharks got a good one in Harris. I know people talked about his devaluation after coming out, how it could cause problems in the locker room, but we haven’t seen much of that on the ice.”
Reggie grimaced at his words. William hadn’t really gone into depth about how his teammates treated him off the ice, and he wasn’t exactly sure how to bring it up in case it was a sensitive topic. He sighed as they moved on to talk about Joe Thornton, another name he recognized because Wiliam said that the older player had taken him under his wing his first year in the league.
“He’s the best,” he remembered William gushing, “let me stay at his house whenever I needed and really taught me how to survive. Being on the West Coast makes travel during the season brutal. Especially when you get to like January and February.”
Reggie heard the unspoken too, the older player had never given him any grief for his sexuality. He couldn’t even imagine how hard it had been for William to come out. Easier than hiding he guessed since William had done it in the first place. Reggie wasn’t sure even he was brave enough to do something like that in that toxic environment.
While he was lost in thought the game started, and he was startled out of his head when Luke threw the door to his room open. He looked at Reggie suspiciously, “You’re watching hockey again?”
“Yep,” Reggie answered, popping the p.
“Can I watch?”
Reggie was a bit surprised. Only Bobby had shown an ounce of interest, occasionally joining Reggie in watching despite being a Kings fan himself. After a few beats, Reggie answered, “Sure.”
“Sweet! My dad used to take me to hockey games when he wanted me to be an athlete. I couldn’t skate for shit though.”
Reggie snorted, he’d seen Luke’s coordination, so he could believe it. He elbowed Luke who dropped down on the couch next to him, “If they didn’t give gays a weakness, we’d be too powerful.”
Luke laughed loudly, “You’re so right.”
The two boys lapsed into silence as the game picked back up, broken every so often by Reggie making noises in reaction to what was going on in the game. He could feel Luke looking at him in amusement every so often, and when first intermission started, he prepared himself, “What’s up Luke?”
“I need, like, so many explanations.”
Reggie sat up and turned to face him, “Okay, yeah, ask away. I don’t know everything but I know a good bit.”
Luke hummed, “Maybe I should start with the obvious, um, who’s playing?”
“It’s the San Jose Sharks and the Arizona Coyotes.” “Okay,” Luke nodded, holding up two fingers, “who is better?”
“Sharks by far,” Reggie answered confidently.
Luke asked more questions, mostly about penalties and positions, and Reggie, much to his surprise, had an answer to every question. By the end, Luke looked much more relaxed and he leaned back further into the couch, “You really know your shit,” he commended.
“It’s a new interest,” Reggie admitted.
Bobby walked out of his room just as the second period started and stared at the two boys on the couch incredulously. Before Reggie could ask how long he’d been home, Bobby spoke, “I’ve been trying to get you boys to watch sports with me for years. What the hell is going on?”
“We’re multifaceted,” Reggie spoke, chin tilted up, lips quirked up into a teasing smile.
Bobby snorted and shook his head, “Sure you are.” Sitting down on the other side of Reggie on the couch, he stretched out, “Who are we going for?”
Reggie motioned toward his shirt and Bobby gagged, “But the Kings, bro.”
“Choke,” Reggie deadpanned, and then more teasingly continued, “but you’re straight, I don’t expect you to understand.”
Bobby laughed, throwing his head back against the couch, used to the teasing. He turned his head to look at Reggie, “Fair enough, I suppose I can’t prove you wrong.”
“Never wrong, not once.”
Luke snorted, “I’m sure.”
But instead of responding, Reggie focused back on the TV stubbornly. He didn’t want to miss in case William scored a goal. Reggie would say in case he did something impressive, but in Reggie’s humble opinion, everything William did on the ice was impressive.
“So who’s your favorite player?” Bobby asked, eyes still trained on the TV as the Sharks got a breakaway, three on one.
Reggie leaned forward, hands over his mouth in anticipation, and when William received the drop pass and took a shot, it flew past the goalie, straight in the back of the net. Jumping up, Reggie let out a loud yelp of excitement and immediately went for his phone to send William an excited text for his first goal of the season.
“Harris, huh?” Luke asked and Reggie startled, having temporarily forgotten he wasn’t alone in the room.
Reggie clicked his tongue, “Yep. He’s really good.”
“You know, his story is actually pretty cool,” Bobby leaned forward, elbows on his knees, “how he came out and stuff.”
Nodding eagerly, Reggie grabbed his shoulder and shook him a little, “Yes, that’s why I like him!” He paused and then added, “Well, one of the reasons.”
“Wait, what?” Luke asked, looking back and forth between the two of them, eyebrows furrowed in confusion.
“Google it,” Bobby and Reggie said in unison, fist bumping at Luke’s wounded look.
Reggie took pity on him first, sitting back in between them before slinging an arm around Luke’s shoulder to pull him into his side, “Seriously though, look into it.”
The rest of the game was fairly relaxed. Luke got into it once he started figuring things out, halfway through the second period, and Bobby very reluctantly cheered for the Sharks with them. When Reggie smirked at him, he shrugged, “If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.”
“Damn right.”
-
William was laying in bed, Luna burrowed comfortably into his side, when his phone started ringing. Shutting his eyes, he sighed, exhausted, and picked it up after a few seconds. When he saw who it was, his mood immediately flipped, and he answered Reggie’s FaceTime request without hesitation.
“Nice goal,” Reggie told him in lieu of a proper greeting.
William beamed, rubbing his eyes a few times before sitting up all the way to answer, “Thanks, Reg.”
The other boy hummed before making a noise and pulling the phone away from his face, “Look, the shirt you recommended came in!”
Squinting, William looked at it, the black shirt with a rainbow Sharks logo, and for some reason, unbeknownst to him, his eyes started to burn. He cleared his throat a few times before speaking softly, “I love it.”
“Me too,” Reggie smiled, cheeks reddening a bit. William wanted nothing more than to pinch them, he liked when Reggie blushed because it made him look softer.
Unable to stop himself, William blurted, “When are you coming?”
“Next week, remember?” Reggie gently reminded him, settling back against his pillow.
William pouted and Luna finally got curious enough to pop her head into view. Not acknowledging it, he told Reggie, “Can’t you come early?”
Reggie sighed, rubbing at his eyes, looking more tired than William had ever seen him, except for maybe the first time they met, “I’d love to, but Luke has been in a writing frenzy. We have daily writing sessions and I’m sure he wants to start rehearsing soon. We’re going to start recording some before we go back on tour.”
“When do you go back on tour?” William was pretty sure he’d never mentioned it, not that he remembered at least.
Reggie hummed, clicking away from FaceTime to check his calendar, and when he came back, answered, “Mid-January. We did a lot of the East Coast and West Coast and a good bit of the Midwest so we still have to hit the South and the middle of the country.”
“How far South?” William asked, curious as to what their reach actually was.
Shrugging, Reggie tapped at his bottom lip in thought, “I think probably New Orleans.”
“New Orleans sounds fun,” William offered.
“Mhmm,” Reggie hummed. He was staring at William, and William felt his head tip to the side and his eyes start to get heavier. Reggie laughed softly, “Tired?”
“Little bit,” William confirmed, yawning.
“Get some sleep.”
William nodded, “Good idea. You too.”
“I will,” Reggie promised, crossing his heart with a faux serious look on his face.
“Good,” William answered, grinning tiredly before they said their goodbyes and hung up for the night. Luna let out a huff and laid back down next to him, and William wrapped his arms around her, trying desperately to squash the sudden loneliness resting heavy on his chest.
“Soon,” he whispered.
-
Reggie left early on a Tuesday morning and caught a flight from LAX to the airport in San Jose. William texted him before he left, promising to pick him up after practice, and by the time Reggie landed, he was practically vibrating with both nerves and excitement.
I’m outside in the pickup lane!
Reggie sped up, a bounce in his step, and walked along the line of cars, looking for William. He was toward the back, looking down at his phone, and Reggie knocked on the window, shivering at the gust of wind that hit him.
William jumped at first, startled by his sudden appearance, before he unlocked the door for Reggie to climb in with his carry on. Reggie bit his lip, toning down the wide smile that was threatening to stretch ear to ear, “Hi.”
“Hi,” William responded, just as quietly. His cheeks were tinged red and his smile was more shy than Reggie’s, but he loved it just the same.
Reggie’s fingers itched to reach up and brush the curl of hair hanging down in his eyes out of the way, but he held back, unsure if he was allowed to. He couldn’t be sure, but it looked like William’s fingers twitched too.
“Ready?”
Taking a deep breath, Reggie nodded, “Absolutely.”
-
William knew he probably should’ve focused fully on the road, but he couldn’t stop himself from glancing over at Reggie frequently. Just seeing him, knowing that he was real and there was so comforting, and part of William was already dreading Reggie having to leave the next day.
Reggie was staring out the window, forehead leaning against it, and William wanted to touch. He wanted to hold his hand or touch his cheek or something, just to reassure himself that he was real.
“Are you hungry?” he asked instead.
Reggie hummed, “A little. I could start with a coffee.”
“Me too,” William admitted, changing lanes to head toward his favorite local shop a few miles from his apartment. When he parked, William looked over at Reggie, more uncertain than before, and asked, “I go to this shop pretty frequently, it’s really lowkey and no one will bother us.”
Reaching across the console, Reggie squeezed his shoulder, “I trust you.”
William was nervous, and he wasn’t exactly sure why, but as they walked down the sidewalk, hands occasionally brushing between them, he felt his heart pounding harder and harder with every touch. When they got to the door, William held it open, and Reggie stepped into the mostly empty shop.
A barista William recognized called out a greeting, and Reggie stepped aside to let him lead the way to the counter. The menu was relatively basic aside from a side list of specialty drinks which was what William usually picked from.
“Their special drinks are really good, I’ve tried most of them,” William muttered, shifting closer to Reggie so he could hear better.
“I might try the s’mores one,” Reggie answered, voice equally muted, “the toasted marshmallow sounds fun.”
“It is,” William told him excitedly.
He ordered his drink and stepped aside to let Reggie order his. Something flickered into the barista’s eye, William wasn’t sure exactly if it was recognition, but she didn’t say anything either way. Reggie picked the table, a two-seater tucked away in the corner, and sat down facing the door.
“So,” he started when William sat across from him, “I did some research on date places in San Jose.”
A slightly hysterical laugh bubbled up in his throat, but William shoved it back down and croaked out, “What?”
“Yeah, I picked out a ton of restaurants that look really good and offer a lot of options for any dietary restrictions you might have. And then for activities I have them grouped into casual and formal and you can pick.”
William stared at him, slack jawed, stare only broken when the barista set their drinks down in between them with a soft, “Enjoy.”
A blush was rising on Reggie’s cheeks, “I would love some feedback.”
Shaking his head, William laughed, “Yeah, that’s all fantastic, but I’ve lived here for years and have never gotten to bring someone on a date, I’ve got so many ideas of my own.”
Reggie sighed, “I don’t want you to do all the heavy lifting, I want to make this equal.”
William furrowed his eyebrows, setting down the latte he’d just taken a sip of, “I invited you here, I didn’t really expect you to worry too much about this part.”
“Well,” Reggie laughed, “guess I did all this for nothing, huh?”
“Next time,” William spoke confidently, picking his drink back up.
Reggie’s eyebrows shot up, “Already assuming there’s going to be a second date before we even have the first one, huh? That’s very bold.”
He shrugged and told him honestly, “I think the first date is going to go great, and if it doesn’t, then we’ll just have to have a do-over. Second date either way.”
“Ah, an intellectual,” Reggie responded, “your reasoning skills are off the charts.”
“Well, I did go to college.”
Reggie held his hands up, “You’ve got me there.”
“My college education is short-lived, but it does exist,” William joked.
“Okay then, Mr. College Education, do you already have a plan?”
William held up his car keys and jingled them in his direction, “I sure do.”
Reggie stared at him for a few seconds and then shook his head, “Fine, I’ll let you have your little mysteries.”
“Thank you,” William said, reaching across the table to brush his fingers across the back of Reggie’s hand. He watched as Reggie’s pinky jumped, bumping his thumb, and he chewed on the inside of his cheek, trying not to show just how fond he was of this boy he’d just met.
-
They spent the entire day on the couch watching movies. Luna was ecstatic to have people around all day, running around and barking until William managed to calm her down. After an hour or so, she fell asleep on the floor at their feet. Mid-afternoon, William broke out some snacks and Reggie laughed because they were vaguely healthy in a way he assumed was required for athletes but definitely not for musicians.
It was calm, relaxing even, something Reggie hadn’t experienced in so long, maybe ever. His parents did nothing but fight growing up, and then he moved in with three other boys his age. Neither environment was very conducive for peace and quiet. But in William’s apartment, he felt himself nodding off a few times, feeling warm and safe.
“Reg,” William whispered, shaking his shoulder a bit later, and he jumped, not realizing he’d actually fallen asleep.
He rubbed his eyes and croaked out, “What time’s it?”
“About an hour and a half until our reservation.”
“Kay,” he muttered, prying himself off of the absurdly comfortable couch to go to the guest bedroom where his bag was. William had offered to share his bed, but Reggie decided that staying the night was maybe too fast already, so he declined. Thankfully, William didn’t seem to mind.
William moved further down the hall and into his room, Luna padding after him, and Reggie was snapped out of his trance when he heard the click of his door shutting. Shaking himself, Reggie pulled some of his clothes options out of his bag. None of the boys knew exactly where he was going, but the day before he left, they all sat on his bed and gave their strong opinions on his choices.
Eventually, after a few minutes of staring, he decided to mix their picks. William told him it wasn’t fancy and that he needed to dress warm, so Reggie picked the jeans Alex liked, the sweater Luke chose, and Bobby’s shoe pick.
“Hair,” he muttered under his breath, moving toward the ensuite after he was dressed. Reggie had been alive for over 20 years and he’d been dressing himself for over half of them, but he couldn’t help but wish his bandmates were there to help. It was as if they heard his wish, Alex FaceTimed him, Luke hanging over his shoulder with a bright smile on his face.
“Reggie,” Luke cheered when it connected fully, “show us the fit.”
He snorted and flipped the camera so they could see. Alex nodded, seemingly happy with his work, “Looking hot, Reginald. Is this a date?”
Clearing his throat, Reggie’s ears went hot and he shrugged, “Maybe.”
“Well if it is, leave your hair ungelled. It always looks super soft, and you look hot with that strand of hair falling on your forehead.”
Luke nodded enthusiastically, “True!”
“Thanks boys,” Reggie responded distractedly and set the phone down so he could use both hands on his hair. It was silent in the bathroom beyond the noises his friends occasionally made when they moved around or gave him instructions.
“So,” Luke started when Reggie sat on the bed, completely dressed and ready, “where are you?”
“I’m in California,” Reggie tried to deflect.
Alex made a hurt noise in his throat, “Why won’t you tell us?”
Reggie sighed and admitted, “It’s so new. It’s not really a secret, but part of me wants to keep it close until it’s real.”
“I’d say it’s pretty fucking real if you’re flying somewhere for a date.”
Tilting his head back against the wall, Reggie laughed, “I suppose that’s true.”
“When did you meet?” Luke asked, leaning in close to the camera as if trying to get in Reggie’s personal space through the camera.
“Last month on tour.” “A fan?” Alex asked, shocked. All of the boys had discussed the pros and cons of dating fans, and Reggie was stuck at a hard no when they finished the conversation.
Thinking back, he snorted, “Not really. He didn’t know who I was at first, but now he’s a fan.”
“Well,” Luke broke in, “Reg, you show that boy a good time. Don’t forget, you’re a catch and he’s lucky to have you tonight!”
“What Luke said,” Alex added, “and don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.”
Reggie rolled his eyes, responding sarcastically, “Thanks, Mom and Dad.” And just as he hung up there was a light knock at the door. He took a shaky breath and walked over, smoothing his sweater down, and when he opened the door, William’s fist was hovering in the air like he was about to knock again.
His mouth went dry looking at William, “Wow, um, you look great,” Reggie managed.
William’s face lit up and he glanced down at himself, “You think? Not as good as you, that’s for sure!”
Reggie struggled for a response, and William put him out of his misery, bumping Reggie’s hand with his and tilting his head toward the front door. Following William out of the building and into the parking garage, Reggie wanted to ask what he had planned, but he hadn’t managed to get it out of him all afternoon, so he stayed quiet.
“You want to pick the music?” William asked, holding out the aux cord and Reggie nodded, taking it eagerly. William nodded, “I want to hear what a music expert listens to.”
“Expert,” Reggie tested the word out on his tongue, “I guess technically out of the two of us, but I don’t know if I’d consider myself an expert.”
“I bet you have some fantastic playlists,” William countered, glancing over as he pulled to a stop at the first red light.
“Well,” Reggie paused because he did actually take a lot of pride in his playlists, “yeah, I think so at least.”
“There you go, own your awesomeness, Reg.”
When William said ‘reservations’ earlier, Reggie assumed it was at a restaurant for dinner, and he was incredibly confused when they pulled into an empty parking lot and William parked right near the door.
“What are we doing?”
“Tonight, since we’re in my city, I figured we could do something specific to me. Since we’re kind of still getting to know each other, you know?”
“Okay,” Reggie answered, unsure where he was going, “I like that idea.”
William sounded relieved, “Good. This is the rink my team usually practices in and I have the keys.”
“Skating?” Reggie asked, immediately nervous.
“Yep,” William chirped, pulling the door open for Reggie before reaching over to flip the lights on. It was cold inside and the lights came on slowly, one at a time across the rink. William grabbed his elbow gently, startling him, and tugged him off to the side.
“I don’t have skates,” Reggie finally spoke, realizing that one huge flaw in the plan may get him out of absolutely humiliating himself.
William waved his words away, “They do public skating nights here sometimes so they have spare pairs for rentals. Eventually we’ll have to get you your own pair.”
That sounded promising, on one hand, William was planning on keeping him around, on the other hand, he’d have to not accidentally crack his head open on the ice to fulfill his plans. But instead of protesting, Reggie was a good sport and told him his shoe size because William seemed really excited, and he didn’t want to spoil it.
“Be right back,” William told him, “I’m going to grab you a pair and get mine and put some music on. We can lace the skates up on the bench.”
“I’ll be right here,” Reggie responded weakly, stomach churning with nerves.
William wasn’t gone long before he was linking his arm with Reggie’s, pulling him again toward the closest bench. Reggie sat down, in a daze, moving slowly as William quickly tied his skates. Turning to Reggie, he saw that he had skates on but they were untied and he laughed, “Never done this before?”
“Hard no.”
“I got you,” William promised, dropping down to one knee in front of him. Reggie’s leg tingled when William brushed against it while he tied the laces. After the left one, he looked up at Reggie, “All good? Not too tight or too loose, right?”
“All good,” Reggie told him, reaching down instinctively just to check.
Before he knew it, the second one was finished too and William was standing in front of him, holding a hand out to help him up. He stepped onto the ice first, Reggie following close behind him, hovering just at the edge.
“I’m assuming you’ve never skated before.”
“You’d assume correctly.”
“Well,” William started, skating backwards a bit to give him space, “the good news is, you have the best teacher on the West Coast at your service.”
“He thinks highly of himself,” Reggie joked, taking a step out onto the ice, wobbling a bit. William kept his distance, close enough that he could get to Reggie fast, but far enough that he had room to get comfortable.
“Not to brag, but I am a professional.”
Reggie snorted and took another step, and then another and another. On his fifth step, he got too confident and almost landed right on his ass, but William swept in, catching him by the armpits, a few inches from the ice.
“Holy shit,” Reggie breathed, eyes wide.
William’s voice sounded like he was holding back laughter, “You good?”
Clearing his throat, Reggie collected himself and stepped away, “I’m good.”
William hovered around him closer after that, always within reach and coached Reggie every so often in a soft tone. It felt like years had passed, but Reggie eventually got comfortable enough to not be wobbling every few steps, and William moved up next to him for the next slow lap.
“Having fun?” he asked.
And Reggie found he actually was, he recognized the playlist and with William’s steady warmth next to him, keeping him safe, he didn’t hate it. After a few seconds with no answer, William bumped Reggie’s hand with the back of his to prompt a response. Reggie snapped out of it, “Yeah, this isn’t as hard as I thought it’d be.”
William’s lips twitched, “Sure, Reg. Whatever you say.”
They finished the lap, William still teasing him, and Reggie elbowed him in the side. William flinched like he’d actually landed a solid hit and pouted. Rolling his eyes, Reggie motioned toward him, “You’re being dramatic.”
“Never,” William responded, reaching up to grab Reggie’s hand, and when he linked their fingers together, any comeback Reggie had flew out of his brain. William didn’t say anything else either, content to skate laps with him, hands swinging between them.
Every so often one of them had a question or something to say, but for the most part it was just the music and the sound of skate blades on ice making noise. Reggie kind of understood why William liked it, it was almost hypnotizing, and he was startled when William tugged on his hand, pulling him back toward the bench.
Reggie gave him a questioning look and William smiled softly, pleased, “Playlist ended. I figure we could go get food now too.”
While Reggie was relieved to be back on solid ground again, he missed the comfortable weight of William’s hand in his. His hand felt cold, and he was trying really hard not to pout. Reggie managed to get the skates off by himself and handed them over to William to put away.
“Be back in a sec,” William told him breathlessly, cheeks bright red whether from cold or something else, Reggie wasn’t sure, and before he could respond, William was gone.
-
William put the skates back and paused a second to breathe. He was in really good shape, but it felt like he hadn’t been able to catch his breath all night. Shutting his eyes, he smiled thinking back at Reggie’s nervous but determined face as he stepped out of William’s arms after almost falling to skate a few steps on his own.
“Fuck,” he muttered under his breath, “please relax,” he whispered, unsure if he was talking to his brain or his pounding heart. Reggie was looking down at his phone when William met him back out, and he gave William an assessing look. Not entirely sure what he was looking for, William slowly offered his hand back to the other boy, and a smile grew on his face as he took the offered hand.
“What’s for dinner?” Reggie asked, finger stroking over William’s knuckles subconsciously.
William waited to answer until they were both in the car, and he cranked it up, flipping the heat up to high for them. Reggie bumped his knee, and he answered, “I was thinking we could go to a taco truck I like. They have some tables outside, but we can take them home if it’s too cold.”
“Taco truck,” Reggie mused.
Cutting off the rest of his sentence, William rushed out, “We can go to a restaurant too though, I just thought since we’re both sort of public figures we might have less of a spotlight at a food truck.”
When William finished rambling his explanation, he met Reggie’s eyes nervously, and Reggie just smiled, “Sounds like a great pick.”
“Oh,” he said, not expecting it to be that easy.
“Oh,” Reggie echoed.
William blushed and muttered, “Shut up,” before pulling out of the parking lot.
There were a few people ordering from the truck when they got there, but there was empty seating and someone had plugged in portable heaters for people who wanted to eat there. William waited for Reggie to order before he put his in and led him over to one of the empty tables to sit.
Reggie looked around curiously and yawned, clapping a hand over his mouth and flushing with embarrassment when he caught himself. Laughing, William teased, “Am I boring you?”
“Actually, yes,” Reggie teased back.
“Oh, that’s a shame, I actually thought this was going pretty well.”
Reggie’s face softened and he reached across the table to poke William’s hand, “It is.”
One of the workers called his name with the food before William could respond, so he just shut his mouth and stood up to go get them. When he got back, the moment was gone, and they both focused on eating. The tacos were good as always, and within 30 minutes they were back in the car, heading back to William’s apartment.
“Movie?” he asked Reggie when they got back inside.
“Yeah, sounds good.”
William frowned, “Wait, I have to walk Luna first, you good to stay?”
“I should probably take a shower,” Reggie smiled wryly referencing the sweat he broke while struggling to skate.
“Okay,” William nodded, “I’ll be back soon. Make yourself at home.”
“Thanks, Will.”
Before he could think twice, William grabbed Reggie’s sleeve and pulled him back, pressing a light kiss to his forehead.
-
Reggie barely remembered getting to bed after the movie, but he definitely hated the next morning when his alarm started going off early. He hit snooze and was almost back asleep when William was knocking on the door gently, “You awake?”
“Yeah,” Reggie croaked, voice cracking from disuse.
“Okay,” William answered, “I’ll make some coffee while you get ready and I can drop you off before practice.”
Reggie was touched. He knew how tired William was all the time, and selfishly, he was glad William offered because he wanted to spend as much time as possible with him since he had no clue when he’d be able to see William in person again.
He got dressed and packed and remade the guest bed before he joined William in the kitchen. There were two mugs on the counter, one made up and one black for Reggie to fix how he liked. William watched through squinted eyes, chin resting on his palm, and told Reggie, “Gonna try and remember so next time I can have it ready.”
Reggie’s eyes burned and he took a sip of his fixed drink. Glancing over at William’s mug, he asked, “What about you?”
“Splash of almond milk and a lot of sugar.”
Tapping his temple, Reggie promised, “I’ll remember that.”
They finished their coffee like that, crowded together in the kitchen, William’s forehead resting on Reggie’s shoulder between sips. Halfway through his cup, Reggie linked his fingers through William’s again, both of their hands warm from holding the mugs. He was going to miss that more than he thought. Fuck, leaving was going to hurt. In fact, he wasn’t sure anything could hurt worse.
But he was wrong. When William pulled him into a tight hug outside the airport, he brushed his lips ever so slightly across Reggie’s forehead again, just like the night before. Walking away from that, fighting to not turn around lest he be tempted to skip his flight and never leave, that hurt more.
