Miguel O'Hara: What's his deal
Ok so ever since the theatre realease of Across the Spiderverse back on May 31st (yes in France we get our new releases on Wednesday, this is why the early videos on YT had French subtitles btw in case you were wondering), I have been deep in it. Like. DEEP. The main offender for that being Miguel O'Hara, who immediately started living rent free in my head and he is clearly not leaving any time soon. Anyway, this is completely out of topic for my blog but I do what I want so let me rant about the aforementioned Depressed and Overworked DILF because we love men with problems in this house.
WATCH OUT FOR THE SPOILERS (and unhinged ramblings that totally sidetrack).
Ever since the release of ATSV, a lot of videos have been available on YT to dissect everything, and of course I have been having an intense focus on character analysis, because that movie is absolutely brilliant at establishing character arcs and presenting new Spiderverse characters in one of the most efficient, thrilling and engaging way I've ever had the pleasure to witness. We've been blessed with Gwen's heartwrenching character arc (and she deserves none of the hate she's been receiving, but don't get me started on that), Hobie more like Homie in the span of 5 minutes on screen... And Miguel, who blesses us with his ego, anger issues and massive trauma while also dropping bits of a gentler side - but only bits of it. And I have been extremely normal about Miguel, since he absolutely doesn't tick all of the boxes of the Tickle My Fancy list.
I have been ranting about him in many YT comment sections for more than 2 months now (hi Purple Kisseokjin and Schnee lol), but with the digital release of the movie, I finally remembered I have a Tumblr blog where I can yell about Miguel all I want, so here we are now. Now where do I start...
First Part: Miguel's character design
I've overall been highly impressed by the various art styles given to the Spiderverse cast, and how it reflects who they are and where they come from. Miguel in particular hits many soft spots for me for a good reason: his association with architecture and industrial designs, which are topics I'm interested in (especially architecture). As such, I will begin this study by analysing both the character and environmental designs for Miguel and Nueva York, and how the depiction of Nueva York 2099 reflects the state of the narration as well as how Miles and Miguel feel and think - following the same logic as what we get to see with the use of watercolours on Earth-65B, during Gwen's sequences, to express emotional states. A mandatory tangent will be made in regard to Miguel's themes as well, because they fall in line with my arguments for the character and background designs.
There are some main points to take into account when it comes to anything related to Miguel's design: straight lines everywhere, light rough sketch lines, gouache tones. Where do we find these elements? In architecture design. Older ones made in a traditional way usually have gouache for the colours (although ink and watercolour are also present), and the light sketch lines and straight lines are present to study the perspective, as shown in the example below:
Tumblr media
Feels familiar? Well, will you look at that:
Tumblr media
One of the reasons why I am giggling everytime he appears on screen is because of these delightful sketch lines. Looook, it has the same style as architecture concept art! Even better, from the mouth of one of the character designers, Kris Anka: NO CURVES!
Tumblr media
Even his face has sharp angles (he truly has the most powerful cheekbone game), look at the sketch lines:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And you know what else has a lot of straight lines and sharp angles? Nueva York.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Look at this. Look at this. It's even in the title card when Miles arrives at the Spider Society.
Allow me to make a slight detour to explain what we are looking at while looking at the architecture of Nueva York 2099. What we are seeing here is a blend of brutalism and eco-brutalism. Brutalism is characterised by its materials, steel and concrete, as well as its intent: in a post-WW2 world, architecture is seen with more pragmatism and values function first. Eco-brutalism is a branch deriving from Brutalism, and aiming to reintegrate nature in the concrete jungle in order to create an harmony - albeit a fully man-made one.
The concept artists took (eco-)brutalism and ran away with it for a massive Solarpunk vibe, which makes the whole setting very interesting considering that in the comics, Nueva York is also very much a futuristic dystopia. Yet, using (eco-)brutalism to have us experience the place for the first time along with Miles is a great way to give a sense of awe by way of what we envision as the future to be now:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The interesting bit about it is how (eco-)brutalism and the adjacent solarpunk aesthetic are associated with a rather hopeful future, one where humanity manages to harmonise its modern way of life with a new development of nature. It feels like a haven mixing the relaxing greens of nature with the sharp lines of brutalism architecture, and that's how Nueva York feels on first sight. Similarly, Miguel O'Hara's first appearance leaves quite the memorable impression: tall, with broad shoulders and everything about him being sharp (it's even exagerated in the comics part), even his web.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Fun fact time: ball pens have initially been designed for architecture and industrial drawings, they are fantastic tools to draw neat lines and create a nice variety of shading as well based on how you push on the pen and how you hatch/cross-hatch to modulate the intensity of the shading. You know who and what could be drawn solely with a couple of ball pens? Check the answer below.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He also shines at the Guggenheim by showing how competent he is, with a certain benevolence on top of it: he initially rejects Jessica Drew's suggestion of adding Gwen to the lineup (yes Miguel, you don't want her because she's buddy buddy with Miles), yet saves her from being shot by her own father and ends up getting her on board as she finds herself with nowhere to go. It certainly leaves a similarly good first impression as the bright and harmonious first sight we get of Nueva York.
However, the environmental and character designs both give us a deeper look into Nueva York and Miguel, and it's certainly not as pristine as it seems. Just as Miles is about to discover the truth of the Spider Society, he enters a darker lab and Hobie keeps warning him, until they reach the area where Miguel is pretty much playing Big Brother by watching them through some of his screens:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'd argue that the darker space is a callback to the comics, in which Miguel becomes sensitive to light after his genetic mutation, But it is the very opposite of what we've been shown when introduced to the Spider Society: soft whites and greens are traded for deep blues and the stark orange of multiple screens as well as the tone on Miguel's own costume - the bright orange light of the screens is even reflected on him. This is not a pleasant place, and everytime we see it (the Go Home Machine area has a similar style, albeit more organic in the creepiest way, as displayed above on the 4th screenshot), we witness Miguel having outbursts of anger as well. There is also something that feels disconnected from humanity in the sense that it's colder and more methodical in the design, either with all the sharp angles and stark contrasts, or the alien design of the Go Home Machine.
It's an impression that can also be found once we discover the underbelly of Nueva York, while Miles is being chased:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here, we also have dark tones with stark neon lights that create the impression of a colder, less caring place, that points to the dystopic nature of the place. The impression is created with great efficiency not only by intense contrasts, but also by using the classic codes for a dystopic society: the solarpunk tones can be found in other stories such as the video game Mirror's Edge (classic case of solarpunk hiding a dystopia), and of course the darker cyberpunk aspects are a staple of the Dystopic Futuristic Society, that goes as far back as the first Bladerunner movie at least, and that can also be found in movies, series and games such as the Ghost in the Shell movies/series and the Cyberpunk TTRPG/video game (which pretty much gave its name to the genre) - I'd even argue we could go further back in time for the references with classics such as Aldous Huxley's Brave New World. It matches with the atmosphere of the Spiderman 2099 as well, which is set exactly in that type of darker, cyberpunk dystopia.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I argue that there's something coldly methodical in Miguel's design and, by extension, Nueva York 2099's design as well. And it is delightfully balanced through an initial positive introduction of both, before being broken down for a darker turn later on during the movie, as it matches Miles' own amazement-turned-disappointment throughout the sequences in Nueva York when his initial desire to belong somewhere is brutally turned on its head by the very persons who could have given him that sense of belonging he was seeking.
Interestingly, even the soundscape for Miguel, "Spiderman 2099" and "Lab 2099", expresses the underlying coldness of Nueva York 2099 and Miguel's own scientific, methodical approach to problems. As explained by Youtuber Azcona in his Miguel O'Hara Suite playlist:
"I'd argue that it has the same tonal resonance that the Prowler theme in the first movie had, though is less villainous and dreadful as that theme. Miguel's theme is a five note synth line that sounds akin to an alarm or siren. It's blaringly loud, but is also used for more calm dialogue scenes in an effective way. The words that come to mind when describing the musical soundscape of Miguel O'Hara is "methodical", because no matter how loud or abrasive his theme gets it has an underlying feeling of coldness and efficiency. This is further shown through a repetitive synth ostinato that plods and chugs during a lot of his scenes/scenes involving the multiverse at large. It's reminiscent of Blade Runner in tone and it's mechanical nature, and I think it suits someone as jaded and distant as Miguel. Not only is his theme alarming and efficient, but also efficient in it's cold, electronic soundscape and melodies."
And this very methodical, cold tone is itself used during the infamous Train Chase and Miguel's on-screen mental breakdown... But more on that in the next part!

Tumblr media
I AM HERE (also thanks youuuuu)
AHEM okay, let me think for a sec....
Line of action. You might have heard of it, but the best way I can describe it is- well in the name! It's great for helping with poses n'stuff, the best way I can describe it is using some pictures below
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
See how all the characters seem to follow in the shape of the line? That's basically what the line of action is! It's sort step one before you get into the blocking and details of sketching. It helps add fluidity. Of course this isn't to say you have to use the line of action all the time, but it's really handy when trying to draw something and you don't know where to start!
You also can use the line of action for limbs! Not everything is a straight line when building a skeleton/base. I wish I would've known this earlier, because almost allll of my how to draw books would have everything be perfectly straight, and while some poses and stuff require it, yes, it tends to make poses rather stiff.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
SKETCH LIGHTLY! This is mostly for traditional, but I find sketching lightly makes it easier to erase, as well as making the final drawing clearer. Also, sketch loosely! The random strands and sketches can help add some extra details and ideas as you work on the fianl peice, if you want.
I might get swarmed for this take, but I really don't think you need that deep of an understanding of anatomy. Now, you should still study and reference it, but I don't think you need to be able to name every bone or muscle in the body if you dont want to. Just have a basic understanding of it! It's good to know what areas can twist and bend, and knowing what's attached to what, and how it affects the pose. One thing that helps is 3D rigging videos. Here's one that explains it perfectly in a matter of seconds, and introduces so.ething called "skeleton hierarchy" or just hierarchy
Get out of your comfort zone!! It's scary yes, and 9 times out of 10, it's not gonna look good at a first attempt! BUT YOU GOTTA DO IT MAN ITS THE ONLY WAY TO IMPROVE!!
Thats all I've got!! I'm really tired because I got back from a family trip, but if you have anymore specific questions feel free to ask!

Not really a question but Idk where else to put this-
Idk because I’m shy and don’t wanna put this in the discord. But like, genuinely I love your art style so much. The way you draw poses, weapons, expressions, it’s amazing! Honestly I have half the mind to do a study on how you draw, and maybe learn something along the way.
Oh shit I just thought of a question I can ask you- got any art tips? I’m an artist myself, but also a minor, so I don’t have the most experience, also being self taught and all. I just find characters so hard to draw at times, how do you do it man (not gender specific) ??? How are you so good at art - teach me yo ways
UEUEUEUEUEU THANK YOUUUU--It means a lot you saying that. I often get a bit insecure of my art but hearing people they like it washes that away. So I'm very grateful for everyone on that.
I'm always learning and finding new ways to improve, to level up what I have so I'm very happy to see that effort paying off <3
Tumblr media
As for art tips I'm really bad at giving those--I can only share with you the ones that worked for me, or the ones I discovered whilst making art. Also there's no worries in being new to art, or being self taught. I'm 80% self taught as well, only having real art classes when I got into high school [Finding art schools is hard here in the Philippines due to it being a subject that isn't focused too much] so I understand the struggle of wanting to improve but don't know how. So here are some tips I learned and created for myself that have worked and helped me
Tumblr media
• Don't focus too much on the sketch. The sketch is only the FIRST phase so there's no need to focus on details, just keep drawing and see where it leads • If you get frustrated at your work, take a break. Don't push yourself, that will only make it worse and will lead you to lose motivation to do art [learnt this the hard way] • NEVER compare your art to others, same with your progress or skill level. Art isn't a contest, never was, never will be. You can compare to get information to share tips but If you think you need to take a step back then do so. • If you think you're not making any progress then look back at your old art and compare that to your most recent one to see the improvement. Show yourself some proof that YES you did improve and your still improving. Give yourself a pat on the back! • You gonna get sick of hearing this; USE REFERENCEEEEEEE using reference is so so so so so so important I kid you not--it is vital when it comes to improvement. Whether it your own ref using selfies or even just a photo of your hand, or using pinterest to find a variety of poses, using reference is always helpful in guiding you to certain areas your not well versed in • If your someone who wants to improve lineart number one key is patience. I know, I know--it's frustrating and tedious but patience is required if you want to make it work. Patience AND exercises, specifically ones where you have to practice certain line movements, muscle memory, and constant experimentations on the pressure sensitivity of your tablet. If you are a traditional artist that same can be said with handling a real pen with additional practices of self control over the pen and hand movements. • When practicing a certain area like let's say expressions [my beloveddd] don't be afraid to break boundaries, when I say this I mean go beyond the normal bounds oh how expression usually are irl. Exaggerate them to make the character feel more alive, to really emphasize what they're feeling towards the audience • For drawing characters the best I can tell you is to make them 'pop' not just in colour but in design and personality. Breathe life into them and give them aspects that stand out, from crazy hair styles to quirky habits or even just small details like adding certain details to their clothing to help recognize that this is part of the characters personality.
There's no definite way of explaining how a person is so good at art [not one I'm aware of at least] All I can say is I got to where I am through sheer will, constantly fighting myself to not listen to any negative comments, practicing confidence in my work [still working on this one to this day], and never letting go of what I'm passionate about. Art is a part of me just a much as I'm a part of it. It helped me get through a lot and continues to do so, my love for it will never faded <3
ANYWAYS! Apologies for the long ass respond--I wasn't expecting to write this much BUT I do hope this helps!

Molluck Anatomy Practicing
Tumblr media
Man, it happened again... I just had to draw before going to sleep but yeah, finished after sleeping. I should try to do more sketchy sketches but it just happens that I just gotta do details and stuff... I still cannot really stand my line art, so I gotta kinda hide it under shading and stuff...
I'm not good at anatomy but I'm doing my best to learn it, though it's trickier here since Molluck ain't easy to draw... He got so long arms that I kinda had to make him have an odd pose to have at least one hand visible... My original sketch just didn't have big enough hands, so after fixes, I just had to accept this situation. I feel like I'm still not drawing his body proportions right... Also, just some weeks ago I realized that I have drawn his hands incorrectly multiple times, his fingers I mean... It just feels like I keep learning new things about him...
But well, this one feels like the best one so far. I guess that at least after getting that proper (poseable) 3D Molluck model done I start to understand how his anatomy, proportions and such work... I just see that there's something wrong with the anatomy and pose here but well, I just need to practice more. Though, it's kinda difficult to pose his legs since well, they are pretty dead, atrophic from not being used... I wonder if he is even able to move them, even a bit, or do they just hang around... But his odd little legs are somehow endearing, at least for me. Also yeah, I don't know why but Molluck looks somehow confused here... Like he had just woken up.
Oh, and this did remind me of one older traditional sketch similar to this I have never shown:
Tumblr media
You can see him having incorrect hands here but it's just the amount of joints in his fingers. I might like the style better here but his body has more problems here.
Oh, and I just feel like adding that sometimes I just think about that how there seems to be less 'Molluck thirst' than it used to be like 3-2 years ago. Well, I can get it but mine hasn't faded away, at all, just getting 'worse'... Man, after two months it's been 3 years of Molluck for me. It just feels like I finally have found the right one for me. Getting into the Emperor (BG3) just strengthened this feeling since I just saw how strong my feelings for Molluck are, preventing me from really having other characters around me. Though, the Emperor only started to interest me because his appearance reminded me of Molluck (and I love octopuses) but he is still my favourite character in that game and I love him but only as a friend. (I even bought the whole game because of him... But it was worth it and I'm currently doing my 5th playthrough...)
I do understand if someone thinks that I'm 'crazy' or something since yes, I do am crazy about Molluck! Also, I'm used to be seen as 'odd', like my whole life, so yeah, it's just what I am. It's just that Molluck is so 'me', like I have said many times; he felt like me as a Gluk and that's what got me into him. I remember feeling nothing toward him when I saw him for the first time, both in AO and SoulStorm. I'm just kinda immune to appearance stuff... Someone can look pleasant but eh, it evokes no desire in me. I don't even wanna call someone beautiful before knowing the person. Stereotypically 'hot' people look even ugly to me... Well, I often see that I have different opinions than the others but I don't even find Molluck ugly, even he is kinda meant to be ugly, at least to humans, since the SoulStorm art book calls him ugly and says that he is even uglier now, but he is said to be attractive by Glukkon standards, so... Well, I seem to be attractive by 'human standards', so a good match, eh? I have said this earlier but I have just heard from multiple people that I'm (very) handsome... I don't even know what to do with my appearance, it's just for identifying me, what else it needs to be... I mean, I'm not even interested in looking attractive, just pleasant enough for myself.
I don't know what has made the others thirsty for Molluck but, like I said, my reason was that I saw myself in him and only after that his appearance catched my attention. But even it was so, man, he do is such a beautiful Gluk! And well, even if there do are some difficulties due to his body since it limits him, there are ways to deal with it and I'm glad to help him out; he can give big hugs and kisses! I still honestly don't know about these terms, like what he is to me, thought many terms can exist at the same time but the main one I mean... I prefer friend-like love but it's more than that still... Romantic love is something like seeing the other as ideal, not about true love, just being in love, if I have understood correctly (I have seriously needed to read multiple definitions for it and I'm still not sure...). I see that Molluck isn't perfect and I don't want him to be perfect either but he is perfect one for me still. I'm basically trying to say that I don't really feel like using this 'fictional other' term like many self-shippers seem to use since it doesn't describe mine well enough. Well, whatever, I just love this Gluk so much!

Note
I've been feeling discouraged about my art recently. Could you possibly give me some tips?
Ok I wanna preface this by saying I am by no means a professional or even "good" artist, BUT I shall try!
These are all tips by a digital artist so I can't help much when it comes to other forms
This got long so under the cut, 20 ART TIPS TIME LETS GOOO
1.Try to draw most days, or at least once a week. The more often the better BUT I don't mean like hardcore, a complex drawing every single day (recipe for burnout right there). I mean like even just 30 seconds of SOMETHING. You can draw shapes, maybe fill a page with circles. There are programs u can find online that give you like a min to sketch something and challenge yourself in a really short time frame. Guess what?? When you draw often you're building those neural pathways (I think) and the more you do it the easier it'll get
2. Don't obsess over making stuff look perfect on the first draft... or at all. I recommend making a "draft" layer or 2... or 3 over the initial sketch. The more you go over it and change stuff, the better it'll be. Also, If you spend hours on it and still hate it?? Who cares! You put in the work and now you have an idea out on paper that you can go over some time in the future and improve if you chose to.
3. DON'T DELETE STUFF!!! Unless it's literally just mindless scribbles, save everything you draw. Like I said, you can go over it again and improve it someday. You can also look back at it in like a year and compare your art to see where you've improved! I deleted all my old art from beyond like a year ago and regret it so much. Don't berate yourself for the stuff you need to work on, be proud of what improvements you've still made
USE REFERENCES!!!!!!! Please just do it, I know it's annoying but I promise it helps so so much
4. Invest drawing tablet, preferably one with buttons that you can map to undo, sketch, fill and such. This will make drawing sooooo much easier (and faster). My quality of art has improved just from drawing the same thing and redoing it like 20 times at a time, and it takes way less time when I can just click a button to do that. It might seem daunting at first but it quickly becomes instinctual. This is the one I got and I'm quite happy with it! It's got good sensitivity, a pen you don't have to replace batteries for or even recharge, and it's mid-range so not wayy too expensive. However, if you're just starting out, I'd recommend this (I got the corded version but I assume it's about the same) since it's small, cheap and you can focus on just learning basics like improving lines n such.
5. Use a bigger canvas size. I started out with 1000x1000, and that's still fine for smaller stuff and doodles, for better quality I recommend bigger sizes. If it's too small it'll look all weird and pixel-y
6. THERE ARE LITERALLY SO MANY FORMS OF ART, maybe the one you're trying just isn't something you vibe with! There's mosaics, digital, traditional (and all the many sub-categories of that), sculpture, photography, etc. All are equally valid and you will improve in your craft if you choose something that 1. you enjoy, 2. are consistent with it!
7. SEGEMENT OUT THE LIMBS drawing DCA stuff for over a year has helped me improve on anatomy sooo much literally just because it forced me to think of each part of a limb in terms of segments, shapes- for instance, instead of an upper arm, I think of a tube which connects to a circle that allows it to rotate and another tube... followed by a weird shape for a hand that connects 5 smaller tubes, whiCH ARE THEN SEPERATED IN TO 3 TUBES EACH. Yes it sounds confusing but breaking it down like that instead of just trying to figure things out helped an absolute shitton
8. Have some kinda hobby that makes you draw frequently. For instance I have a discord sona I draw a new pfp for every month or so. It's a simple design and since the pfp won't show many flaws I can pump out lots of art for it in a small timeframe and I find it relaxing. I've actually improved a shitton just drawing pfps This is one of my first pfps from maybe 2 yrs ago compared with one of my most recent ones
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(yes I'm a bit of a furry deal with it) It's cute, there's nothing wrong at all with it! However, you can see how things have changed.
See how the lines are a lot more even, less jagged? The proportions of the shoulders are much wider, the ears aren't just popping out of the hair, the shading makes a bit more sense and isn't just thrown around at random. There's also a broader range of color, with a few bright highlights to catch the eye, colored shading I think as well. The former is just like 3 simple colors. These are all things I learned from drawing pfps consistently.
9. CONSISTENCY IS KEY!! And FUN, if you have fun drawing it'll be a lot easier to do frequently
10. Whether it's drawing pfps, blorbos or landscapes, find something that brings you joy and it'll be MUCH easier to stick to. Draw, draw a lot, do not worry about "good" art and "bad" art cause there's literally no such thing. Compare what you draw now with what you do in like a year or two from now and I promise, if you're consistent, use references and are patient, you WILL amaze yourself with how much you improve.
11. Challenge yourself! Join secret santas (assuming you know you can complete it within the allotted timeframe), draw your friends' sona/ocs (if they're cool with it), do palette challenges, do monthly stuff like drawtober or whatever it's called (BUT I don't recommend doing something every single day for a month cause again, gonna cause mega burnout)
12. Draw when the inspiration comes, it will move your hand. These days I make much better quality art that I'm proud of when I just let inspiration flow through me instead of begrudgingly making myself draw. You shouldn't be forcing yourself!! If you are, you probably are burned out by either drawing too much, feeling a lack of confidence or some other stuff going on irl. Inspiration comes naturally, and when it doesn't it's prolly your mind trying to communicate that something's up. If resting a week or two doesn't help, take a deeper look at your life and see if the artblock is a symptom of something else (for me it's most often depression).
13. At the same time, sometimes you just need to start. Kinda on the previous point of lacking confidence, often we scare ourselves out of even trying. It might feel insurmountable. Nah, try. If all you can do is a wobbly, vague sketch?? You got the idea out!! Start drawing fuckin eyeballs or something, just start. Sometimes the hardest part is just facing a blank canvas and putting a couple lines on it
14. Not all brushes are equal. Some just make drawing easier- at least for me. I dunno the science behind it but when I use my sketch brush (it's got a similar look to pencil) rather than my lineart brush it makes drawings just... look better. Also using thicker lines in general helps. Why?? NO CLUE, maybe thinner ones just show flaws easier or intersect better or something.
15. Music or some other distraction can help, idk why. Some days I like to have a movie/show/podcast going in the background for a mild distraction that keeps me slightly stimulated on other stuff even as I draw- maybe it increases brain activity or??? No idea. Sometimes just listening to music. Sometimes I need total silence. Do what works for you! Give lots of different stuff a try, you may love drawing while listening to a podcast in the background
16. Take breaks!! The pomodoro method works with art as well. Every 25 mins or so, take a 5 min break. Get up, stretch, get some water, maybe watch a yt vid. Call ur friend and tell them you love and cherish them. Then get back to it and you will feel oh so refreshed. After maybe 3 rounds take a 15 min or longer break and then repeat if you still feel like it
17. SLEEP IS INCREDIBLY FUCKING IMPORTANT you will see a deep decline in the quality of your art when you're tired, plus you just feel like shit and art is about feeling good and expressing yourself. Sleep is important, even tho yes I stay up too late drawing most nights, I do my absolute best to get at least 7 hours of sleep every night, as should you!!
18. DO NOT BE SCARED OF STICK FIGURES AND MESSY SKETCHES, they're actually the best way to start bc 1. it's a quick way to get an idea out before you forget it 2. the finished piece will actually look a lot more fluid since you weren't spending all that time obsessing over making the first draft look perfect- which often just makes it look stiff. You can do a whole lot with stick figures. Focus on that good ol' line of action.
19. Random but when drawing the face, I like to first make a circle and then like a "mask" over it for the actual face. For me it just makes sense. Then two lines, one up/down and one left, right, it'll make it easier to align the eyes and ears. In general, the ears usually go where the "mask" begins and just below the left/right line
Tumblr media
20. Finally surround yourself with people who encourage you. I grew up in an environment where people would gawk at stuff my sibling drew and ignore me bc they were ~naturally talented~ and it made me not want to draw at all.
Well guess what?? Now that I spend time with people who encourage me and genuinely care about my interest in art I've improved a lot bc I have the motivation, the joy of showing ppl who care about me new pieces. If people in your life aren't encouraging you, or gods forbid insulting your art (excluding constructive criticism that you've explicitly asked for) then TOSS EM OVERBOARD THE BOAT OF LIFE and find people who will treat you with the love and respect you deserve
P.S
This isn't a tip, just a recommendation: Chicory, a colorful tale. It's a game where u play as a cute lil dog who gets a magical paintbrush that lets you color the world. The only issue? You have no ~talent~. My gods, this game struck a cord with me.
Feeling like you don't have any talents that come naturally to you. Being overlooked even when you try your best. Feeling like a complete joke when you try to pick up the brush (or in this case stylus) because there are so many "real" artists and you're not one of them.
Also the things people say and how they can affect you even when not intentional. Damn. It's just a beautiful game. It's made by the same people who made Wandersong, another absolute banger game with a character who is seen as a joke and I cannot recommend them enough.
bonus tip bc why the fuck not: OVERLAYS!!!!!!! In clip paint studio you have all these layer options, I can never memorize what they all do so I just make like an ombre color layer over my base colors and try all of them to see what looks cool

Art of Mage: The Ascension
Tumblr media
Recently, a big event happened: I started playing MtA again, and I was forced to read. To be honest, I still find it difficult to read long and complex texts in English, but it's great practice. It's not the first time I've opened the rule book, but now I somehow paid special attention to the arts. And they are very cool there! This is the book I want to talk about. And this is an old book, after which, I think, a lot has changed in the world of illustration. But I'm just curious how it was. Was this book successful? What do you think about it?
Many people worked on this edition
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At first, I wanted to find the specific author of each picture, but despite the existence of such a list, it turned out to be a difficult task. So today I will only comment on the art, not the artists. I am not a professional because my art has never been used for such books, but I want to share my impressions and thoughts.
Tumblr media
There were a lot of such cards there and they are also quite cool, and the main thing is that they look in their place and really look like real tarot cards in design and vibe. Although this is not the art that interests me the most, I couldn't help but mention them here.
Tumblr media
Really cool. It seems to be something from traditional materials, similar to watercolor, maybe with the addition of something else. If you look closely, you can see the remains of a pencil. Look at the head. Is everything drawn anatomically correct? No. But does it create the right mood? Yes!
Tumblr media
Art by Mark Jackson if I'm not mistaken. Kinda reminds me of Sandman from the comics, don't you think? I wonder if this kind of black and white line art is still used in modern books? Must check.
Tumblr media
This art... I was a little surprised to see it in the book. I worked in the game industry and was used to the fact that everything should be casually polished (thanks to gamejams for allowing me to deviate from this rule). Right here... a dynamic plot, but work with the clarity of the picture, color, volume, lighting... on some details it is simply not there. It seems that at some point it was not the main thing to be an illustrator. I wonder what was important? And what remains? Because I would really like to be involved in something like this book.
Tumblr media
I would be happy to see how it is done. I have thoughts that maybe photos were used, but most were definitely drawn and I just want to know how
Tumblr media
It has its own style. A lot of work on small details requires patience, not everyone can draw so many small details and not get lost in them. I love when people do not lose the courage to draw in a unique style
Tumblr media
as in the previous picture, traditional materials seem to have been used here: pencils, felt-tip pens, maybe watercolors? What do you think of when you see this? I think "small artists". So many talented artists with small audiences on Twitter or Tumblr can do the same. Although not. Not "the same", because no one will do "the same" in creativity. At the same level - yes. The same - no. It's obvious that a lot of the artist's personality and experience has been put into this, and that makes this picture unique
Tumblr media
oh i love it, it's not even a color drawing, but it looks so good on the page! But I don't really understand what bothers me about this girl's breasts, I wish I could see what it looks like from the front
Tumblr media
We have already seen this author. Look at the hair. I.. really don't know what to say. Not exactly what I expected.
Tumblr media
interesting art, interesting creature. Many would call it a sketch, but I think it is precisely here that more work on the details is not needed
Tumblr media
I don't know the author, but I definitely recognize the style - I saw something like that in the changelings rulebook
Tumblr media
Oh, I like it. It takes a special skill to draw like that, and I don't have it. Very dynamic. And the form shown is interesting
Tumblr media
Soap. Nothing extra, nice details on the background, clear silhouette. Good.
Tumblr media
I love this kind of comic book style. It is exactly as it should be in this style, I don't know what else to say, except that there is a good work with textures
Tumblr media
how interestingly and harmoniously different styles are combined in this book
Tumblr media
I like it, I would read something like comic book in that style, very nice to look at
Tumblr media
I can't say about the plot, but the details, volume, and shadows are very well drawn. I wonder if it was done in pencil? I am fascinated by people who can draw with pencils and have a similar result
Tumblr media
very calm great vibe
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this is already something closer to the game art I know, not casual, but a step towards polishing, + looks like digital
Tumblr media
one more step :) If you don't pay attention to the face, something like this can now be drawn in hidden objects games. Very nice drawing, by the way, I like the dynamics.
I think that will be enough, at least for today. I don't know who would be interested in such a review with personal opinions. But here's what fascinated me and made me think: so many artists with such different styles in one book. Unbelievable. It would be very interesting to be a part of something like that. Now I want to review new books from this point of view. I used to look at them as a reader, but now...
I wonder if there will be new books of this kind? What are the requirements? What is needed?
Only one trend worries me. Some time ago I had a conversation with the author of this book It was an interesting but a little sad conversation. The author says that, at best, he will receive not so much for this book. He says that he cannot pay the artists as well, because then he will have nothing left. It's a shame, but the only solution he found was to use the AI. I wanted to read the text of the book, because Umbra is a very interesting topic. I even had the opportunity to read it for free as a free copy provided by the author. I did not read it. One of the comments says that the art there is well-suited, although it was created by AI. I do not know. I don't want to see it even for free. I think it brings Banality into the world, destroys the dreams of small artists to be part of something great. I can understand a small author of a small book that won't make much money. It's just sad. I can only hope that the trend does not spread to the whole world. It will really be the time of Winter. And no more magic in this technocratic world.

The Everyman
Ok, so awhile ago I made a post that was like "What if I made a long rant post on Vinnie Everyman" and that's essentially what this is. Some notes first, I'm sick so unlike the Asher Family post the art for this post is traditional sketches because I've tried hard to do digital, full drawings and it just is not happening no matter how hard I try. This post is also VERY loosely drafted, so it may be a bit ramble-y. One last warning, this will be talking about the canon events of EMH. If you don't want spoilers, are fictionkin/a system/an IRL, or are simply triggered by some of the events/topics discussed and shown in EverymanHYBRID, please be careful reading this post.
Now from there, I can get started!
Tumblr media
Vinnie Everyman feels like a character that is either looked over or deliberately excluded when talking about EverymanHYBRID. Whether it is fandom culture just wanting to mash their favorite characters faces together or it's simply many viewers do not find Vinnie as interesting next to Jeffrey and Alex and their family troubles, Evan struggling with possession, or Steph's long-term struggles as expressed in the tumblr blog CANYOUSEETHEWORDS. Which, both are valid in all honesty. It is fine to not like a character. What this blog post seeks to refute is a claim that seems to consistently circulate around the EMH fandom - that Vinnie is a snake and backstabber.
Which, is partially true, which will be elaborated on a little later. However, Vinnie has all the makings to be a tragic character just like Evan and Jeff, but is often swept under the rug and treated as cruel simply because he did what he thought he needed to survive.
Tumblr media
Vinnie Everyman is viewed best when you take him as you do many protagonists, especially in Slenderverse: A representation and vessel for the viewer. His actions make the most sense when the audience puts themself in his shoes.
Obviously, at surface level, Vinnie is a bad person. He conspires with a demon, leads his friends to death, and seemingly feels no remorse until it is far too little too late. So yes, Vinnie is, by all definitions, a snake. But one must put context into his actions.
Looking back on the series, it should be kept in mind Vinnie is entirely led astray by HABIT. While it is not directly said but rather implied multiple times, one time I would like to note is almost all of the video "Lexi", but especially the part where HABIT highlights Vinnie is the guardian, however that is simply not the case, as seen by what he wrote for the role of guardian.
"THE GUARDIAN SHALL LOSE HIS HEART AND THEN HIS BLOOD AND FIGHT TO LOSE ALL HE LOVES"
"THE GUARDIAN SHALL DEFY A GOD ONLY TO BE DEALT A FATAL BLOW"
These lines paint the Guardian as a martyr like figure who is dealt repeated emotional blows, only to be killed. However, these lines almost wholly fit Jeff plenty more than they do Vinnie. His "heart" can be easily put as Jessa, and his "blood" as Alex, since they are blood relatives. Jeff during the series consistently pushed the viewers to search for answers while he also searched himself, which would be his fight.
However, the role Vinnie better fits, the Voyeur, is cruel in description and a lot more true to Vinnies intentions.
"THE VOYEUR SHALL WATCH FROM AN EMOTIONAL DISTANCE, INSISTING UPON MAINTAINING THEIR STRENGTH."
"THE VOYEUR SHALL REMAIN IDLE TO ALL WHO SEE, HOWEVER BUSY HE MAY BE BENEATH"
"THE VOYEUR SHALL SWALLOW JUSTICE’S SWORD"
HABIT, by telling Vinnie he is the guardian, is not only making Vinnie a trustworthy figure in the viewers eyes but making Vinnie feel like he is the victim. By saying he lost his love and his blood (which could be his found family, or his friends, or simply the amnesia that made him forget his family) he no longer is not a victim. On top of that, he's now framed as a martyr in the situation.
Tumblr media
To circle back, Vinnie is not only manipulated consistently throughout the series, he's also someone the viewer sees themself through.
With the knowledge Vinnie was intensely manipulated by HABIT in many ways, it is understandable to follow his whims. While he almost certainly is not a trustworthy figure from the start, he certainly is a threatening one. The possibility HABIT threatened Vinnie into submission is certainly high, and honestly, given the situation, many people would throw friends under the bus to literally save their life.
As easy as it is to go "Not me!", and the scenario is certainly not a realistic one, what Vinnie goes through is understandable if one thinks of EMH as more allegorical.
Putting HABIT in the position of just an awful person, and Evan as an idealized version of said awful person (an interpretation of EMH I personally subscribe to), the situation is a lot more easy to digest.
Its easy to follow trustable people, and even, in the case of EMH canon, people who hold a position of power, even if the person effected knows its wrong. Given the circumstance Vinnie is manipulated and threatened, its easy to fall into the trap and dig a hole too deep.
Tumblr media
(geddin loser, im reliving horrific trauma)
All in all, Vinnie as a character when analyzed is interesting and well rounded. While he intensely stabbed his friends in the back, the way it was framed for him, the other option was to fall to whatever may have been threatened.
Sorry if I rambled plenty or if none of this made sense, as mentioned earlier I am intensely ill and in between school and such I did not and likely won't have the free time to make this post, so I decided to post this while I can. Thank you for reading this far at all, I appreciate it! :-)

Here is the rough draft for Time's full normal attire. Some headcanon notes for the design -Time hates ties. With a passion. Its a daily torture that he wears them, but he feels the difference when he is fully put together in expensive name brand suits. Please listen more. He doesn't know if it pisses him off or makes him want to mock them. (and the dream of (y/n) helping him take off the tie at the end of a hard day might be what keeps him going) -The scarf: Its a gift from Wars for one of his birthdays. At the end of the day they are brothers and despite loving the same person I feel like losing each other would be the second worst pain to feel, after losing (y/n), due to how they understand each other. Especially for Time since he waited the longest to finally finally finally have someone who understood him. How tortured he was not knowing if any of his brothers would come, if he would find (y/n). He will be found wearing presents from the others, as he doesn't really buy things for himself.
-The markings. I just never felt right when sketching if Time did not have his signature markings (same with Twilight). I feel like he would at some point dawned the mask. Surviving, especially as a kid is hard in our world. So I see many dire opportunities to need it.
-EARS. Yes I know the ears are human ears. The guys would use magic to hide it. It would be too odd for a group of gentleman to all have pointy ears and be down right fucking terrifying. Also when finally meeting (y/n) it might make her hesitant of them. (not due to anything malicious, girl just watches/reads way too many supernatural shows/movies/books to know something sus was up.) And also the whole, not draw attention to themselves thing. Ask me anything about the design, let me know if you don't like anything. Or even just questions on the art. Like I said in a comment, I'm transitioning from physical materials to digital so I understand if anything looks weird. I even have a blurb in my head of Lilah's(my y/n's) reaction to Time's meeting if anyone is interested in me writing that. I have to go ahead and apologize, my line work will never be straight and perfect. I had an accident so I have some nerve damage in my drawing hand. So just a heads up. Oh! And you can call me, Lyric!! *goes to hide and cry from embaressment.*
@yandere-linked-universe *Excited Noises* LOOK!
Holy shit. I can see his muscles inside those sleeves
You drew this?? Really??!???
And I thought your last drawing was incredible! (And it was!)
The details, the lines, the colors. (That SUIT)
His hair is a in small ponytail!! (The things that face does to me...)
Excellent color choice for him. The scarf is absolutely a perfect touch to his style.
I'm genuinely envious that you managed to draw his hand and arms so well. And LOOK at the way his body is proportioned! And his face. (His expression!)
How he's standing makes me drool. The red of the scarf just delightfully contrasting his blue inner shirt!
I agree with your Headcanons so hard!! (I honestly can't see him without his markings).
Ears? Perfect, I honestly would see them using magic to hide their ears.
Plus I honestly see Time only accepting gifts from the chain, (and (y/n)).
Time not using ties because he wants (y/n) to tie it for him? Oooh, that's gonna be something each of those boys would want. But Time? Peeeerfect!
What are his shoes? I would say boots. Steel toe Boots that can be disguised as dress shoes!
Does he hold rings? Maybe Legend gives them a magic ring for protection?
I know if she gives them a gift, if they can wear it, it's a permanent accessory for them.
You have writing? Please share! I genuinely enjoy other people's work! The world is waiting for your creativity!
Thank you so much for this surprise! I'm actually excited to see more of your incredible work!
Please accept this not as good as your magnificent work traditional sketch of a plushie Sky as a humble bribe tribute!

Can't say no to him can't you?

Old Art
Hi, all! To celebrate my 1-year anniversary of this blog, I decided it’d be fun to show some of my first, never-before-seen drawings of Double Trouble. All of these are traditional, as I hadn’t gone digital yet. Some are also unfinished, and many were sketches at work that weren’t really meant to be “good,” just something to entertain me when I didn’t have any tasks to do.
I’m going to poke fun at some of them, as I’ve improved a lot since drawing them, but I'm not trying to encourage artists to be overly-critical of their past works. Recognizing your mistakes and flaws in your old work only shows how far you’ve come, and I just want to have a good giggle about how silly some of my old sketches look.
Art under the cut because this list goes on for awhile
Here’s the first drawing of DT I remember doing:
Tumblr media
I used a reference for this one, hence why it looks better than some of my later entries in this post. Unfortunately, it suffers from Long Head Syndrome, a mistake I still often make with traditional art because at the angle I’m seeing it while I’m drawing, it looks perfectly fine. But then you hold it at eye-level, and uh...
Also, what the heck kinda hairline did I give them? It’s like it meets at a point, but not in the middle of their head.
Next up, these two:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Will the Long Head Syndrome ever cease??? As you can tell, I liked the sketch I did at work, so I traced it onto watercolor paper, made a couple changes, and painted it. This one’s not too bad, though it does look like their eyebrows missed the memo as to what angle their head was at.
This next one may be the worst:
Tumblr media
Like...WTF is that? What is that hair poof? Why is one eye so much smaller than the other? What’s going on with that mouth? This is why references are important, kids.
With this next one, I got bored and wanted to color DT in with Sharpies:
Tumblr media
So bright! My eyes! The hair poof is too small, but at least it’s not wiggly like the last one. Also, here’s a magnifying glass to help you see those tiiiny eyebrows.
Here’s another I did with fine line markers that I keep on my wall like a sticker:
Tumblr media
I messed up on the smile, so I made it a frown. Now their eyebrows are too big, and so is that one ear. (Also, my walls aren’t that bright in real life, they just showed up that way on camera.)
Next up is--
Tumblr media
Oh.
Tumblr media
WHAT IS THAT
And next we have one of my favorites!
Tumblr media
The little menace themselves, cute-ified. (We don’t talk about hairlines, no, no, no~)
And here we have one I turned into a digital drawing, but you may notice...
Tumblr media
the ears are too fucking small. DT went from rulers on the side of their head to kid-sized ice cream cones. A real downgrade.
This one’s an unfinished (and will never be finished) drawing:
Tumblr media
What even ARE those hands. Ok, yes, they were guides for drawing in fingers later, but...ew.
Here’s the first full-body, colored drawing of DT I ever did.
Tumblr media
I had drawn them meeting a character from the book I’m writing, hence the speech bubble, but cropped that character out because spoilers! Anyway, this drawing was done with several references and looks much better than some of the others on this list. The main issue is that they’re standing at an angle. Why are they slanted??? Why can’t I draw a straight line??? *sees ace pride flag* Oh yeah, that’s why.
And lastly, here’s the first time I used the DT doll base from @sheblah :
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since this was before I had my iPad, I had to trace the doll base to use it, though I decided to draw the face myself. Oh, asymmetrical eyes, how I loathe thee.
Well, that’s all of the old traditional drawings of DT I have! As you can see, I’ve come a long way since then, but it’s always fun to look back and see where you’ve come from. I hope you enjoyed these silly doodles!

I want to preface this by saying that I really enjoy and look up to the work that you do. Do you have any advice for improving digital drawing skills? How you do anatomy, how you found and chose your tools and workflow, that sort of thing.
Hey thanks that means a lot, and I appreciate the questions!! I have a feeling this’ll end up being a long-winded explanation, so strap in.
To begin with I tried a lot of different programs, but I ended up on procreate because it just feels the most natural to me! I draw on an ipad with an apple pencil, pretty standard stuff there.
As for the specific tools I use in procreate I actually just use the default round brush under paintbrushes for pretty much everything. Aside from a few more technical brushes for effects and patterns and whatnot, but all those are default brushes too!
When I first started digital art a couple years ago I really had no experience with it whatsoever. I had done traditional art throughout my whole life up until that point, but digital was a whole new beast. A lot of my skills with traditional work definitely carried over, especially once I started to get more comfortable working in digital.
The main thing I can tell you, and which I’m sure you’ve heard countless times already is practice practice practice! You don’t have to slave away practicing eight hours a day and devoting your life to it, but make sure you’re drawing smart! Any drawing is good drawing, but if you really want to improve try and make your practice a bit more focused. Pick one specific thing you struggle with at a time and work on them individually. Drawing from reference is always a good place to start.
As for my workflow, it’s honestly pretty horrible, but it works for me, so that’s all that matters tbh. You just gotta mess around with different things until you figure out what feels most comfortable and natural to your process.
Typically I’ll start from a reference, then once I’ve got enought of the figure down I’ll start to make adjustments with the liquify tool and clean up lines. I personally don’t use any sort of gesture or skeleton when I sketch, I just go straight into the lines and adjust as I go, then clean them up to a point I’m happy with. I also use a ton of layers so I can move around parts easier.
After this I start painting in my flat colors on a layer below the lineart, pretty standard stuff there! Typically when I choose colors I try and keep them all in the same family or tones, so you’ll see all my vampires have very cool tones and a lot of purple. Even the black and white colors have some cool tints in them.
Once my flats are finished I move on to the shadows. I start with the biggest section of color first, usually the skin, and make a clipping layer above it. I set the clip layer to overlay, then depending on the skin tone I use a very dark blue or dark red color for the shadows. This also often takes a bit of adjusting transparency and other values, but I’ve eventually gotten a feel for it.
When actually painting in the shadows I start pretty basic just to block out shapes and get an idea of where I want the light source to be. Then I go back in finer detail. Once I finish with a pass of shadow, depending on how it looks I’ll duplicate the layer, adjust transparency, then use gaussian blur to soften the edges while keeping the original shapes in tact. I also use the smudge tool occasionally for finer adjustments as well.
I do a similar process for each block of color until it’s to my liking. Sometimes, especially on the skin tone, I’ll go back and add another overlay layer above the shadows to do some countershading, which just makes things look a bit more three dimensional.
Once all the shading is finished I go back on the skin very gently with a soft, red airbrush to give it a bit of warmth and life, especially around the face. After this I use a white noise brush on another overlay layer to add some subtle highlights and skin texture. For shiny things like hair I make yet another overlay layer, and use a random brush pack I found online that has some nice water effects.
Once all the rendering and other effects are complete I then go back to my lineart layer, make a duplicate, then color it in red with a clipping mask. I take this new red lineart and bring it all the way down to above where the skin tone layer is. This has a very subtle effect, but it makes all the difference imo. After that I go back to the lineart layer once again and make a clipping layer above it, then gently use a red airbrush around where the light hits brightest. I do the same with a dark blue airbrush on the parts with the most shadow. This gives the lineart a bit of variation in color!
Lastly I just sorta wing the background most of the time so I can’t give you much assistance there haha.
Again, apologies for the super long explanation that probably makes zero sense, but I hope you’re able to at least glean some amount of knowledge from my process!!

HAHAHAHA Every Turk Family has one of those names and unironically mine does too 🫡 Tell your mother thank you she is a very lovely lady
I know all of the artists you listed below because my dad blasts them on the radio everytime we go out... I call it old people music but hey I never said it was bad, they're awesome and I might have memorised some of the artist's songs from how much I listen to them... Barış Manço is a classic without a doubt! Fun fact my parents were able to go to his concert and got a signed picture with him I will always envy how lucky they were 😭 I love how women in the industry made the most iconic songs I hear them often in weddings too! Or clubs, even though I only went to one once I'm not very fond of them...
My questions were do you have any tips or inspiration with how you draw! I love your art and artstyle and it's honestly what I've been trying to achieve for a while, I can't believe I'm learning how to draw men because of a silly lawyer show it's a disease...
(We are just having a conversation at this point) (I feel like those people who speak out loud in public) (I hope you and anyone who's reading this is having a good day :) be kind to yourself and others everyone)
OH MY GOD i envy them too😭😭 also omg that sounds like heaven to me. the other day i went out partying and i felt sooo out of place because i only knew like 3 songs. omg it was so so bad.
hmmm tips and inspiration…. my number 1 tip would definitely be to look at a lot of other artists you like and analyze what exactly you like. and then try to emulate that in your own work. i try to look for inspiration everywhere - artists online, traditional artists, old masters, 3d artists, even theatre and poetry, etc. - doesnt mean that i am equally inspired by them all (because all these things at once sound so scary and big but they really arent!) but rather, i try to be open for anything and that helps me find inspiration :)
ill try to explain my thoughts more under the cut because this got long:
for me for example, so far i only posted some art i made that was lined (which, i would say makes up maybe half of the art i draw - i mostly sketch and recently have been building up the courage to paint more) and one of my inspirations is meltow. i think if you go over and check out their art youll definitely see it lol. but also i love the clean look some comics have and my friends tell me my art looks like it belongs in a comic which, i guess yeah :) when it comes to colors and composition i LOVE this artists works. i still have a lot to learn and just looking at their works inspires me so much!!!
i will say i have ALWAYS struggled with lineart. its probably the worst thing in the world to me because it never feels right!!! i like lining on paper with harsh inks and stiff ink nibs that allow for like. very little variety in line weight, but i havent done that in over 3 years (i hope i can get back to that). but yes, something about lineart makes me feel so icky when i use any brush that reacts to the pressure you put on your tablet LOL i just hate it. ugh. i havent been able to work it out.
it was only in 2020 i think that i decided to try it out with a thick brush with some texture and no pen pressure. that probably was the first time i got actual lineart that (at the time) i liked done. and then later on, discovering that other artists are able to achieve beautiful drawings with similar brushes AND that lining with a very simple brush can feel so satisfying helped me evolve a lot! until 2022, i actually wasnt able to give my art the kind of finished look that i wanted. so what people consider my style is really just born out of my limits and working with them. that obviously doesnt mean that i dont try to challenge myself as much as i can. i do and i think everyone should! thats what makes art so fun
if theres any good advice i can give to a beginner itd probaaaaably be. okay this is difficult and i feel like im not really qualified for this. as a hobbyist much less so because a lot of the knowledge and skills i acquired was through an intuitive process (i could never stick with habits such as regular studies or warmups or whatever is meant to be good for you) which definitely isnt the most “productive” way but i mean it doesnt have to be. its just a hobby! you dont have to perfect art. but yes, i would definitely say dont stop drawing. youll always be your harshest critic and at the beginning, and especially if you begin at an older age because youve been training your eye your whole life but your drawing skills for only a relatively short time you will notice a lot of mistakes. and youll think you wont achieve the image you have in your head. and maybe you wont (because youll always strive for more and youll never really be satisfied as an artist bla bla) for a while. but you have to keep drawing! try out different strategies, find out how other artists draw, watch speedpaints, try out different papers and pencils, try everything that makes it more fun and keep going! it will all pay off!!
in my eyes theres also no point in saying “i should wait till im better to draw this idea i have” because if inspiration strikes you you should use that. even though i still sometimes catch myself thinking like that. you can always redraw things later on!! if theres anything that will keep you drawing you should use that! like getting into shows and games that make me want to draw helps a ton LOL people are not joking when they say getting obsessed with one character is the quickest way to improve. i 100% agree!!! if you saw my first nachos you wouldnt even recognize him. not kidding wow this got long. thank you for the questions though!! i hope some of my rambling can help you. feel free to talk to me whenever!

BRASS AT MEZZROW’S
JEREMY PELT with Rick Germanson and Clovis Nicholas, 6 FEBRUARY 2024, 9 pm set
MICAH THOMAS/KALIA VANDEVER, 7 FEBRUARY 2024, 10:30 pm
Mezzrow’s continues the tradition of piano bars like Bradley’s which I got to in the late 1970s. Mezzrow’s by now has drummers whereas Bradley’s offered piano/bass duos. But horns do show up occasionally as they did this week when JEREMY PELT continued his periodic drummerless gigs in the style of his Art of Intimacy recordings and MICAH THOMAS workshopped some tunes with trombonist KALIA VANDEVER. Both more than interesting enough to pique my curiosity, but, alas, slightly flawed.
JEREMY PELT was reliably elegant and tasteful navigating standards with old buddy Rick Germanson and the very fine Clovis Nicholas in from France to play bass. The tune selection was strong and enough off the beaten track—Henry Mancini, Horace Silver, a ballad likely associated with Engelbert Humperdinck and not Ed Sheeran, Nat Adderley, and Dizzy Gillespie. In overly voluble stage patter, Pelt confessed that he spent the afternoon as part of Rod Stewart’s band taping for Jimmy Fallon’s tonight show and that cocktails were served. So he talked too much and, frankly, played too much. What he played was just fine, but he lacked focus and discipline. But he was still wonderful witness the Woody’N’You closer which included Carlos Abade sitting in. Two trumpets in such a small ensemble is tricky anyway, but Abade just doesn’t have the tone or ideas to stick with Pelt subject to a PUI citation. Playing Nat Adderly and Dizzy back to back though was a meaningful tribute to the legacy of his instrument. The Two Different Worlds ballad was my favorite, probably because it was the ballad. Germanson was strong but probably too indulgent of his old pal, but Nicholas was delightful underneath everything though he had only one solo.
I spent the day listening to MICAH THOMAS’s well regarded recent album Reveal and couldn’t quite see the enthusiasm. Yes, he’s a very fine player who pushes the boundaries, but I don’t hear his music soar. I’ve heard him with altoist Immanuel Wilkins who is also edgy. This gig was a tamer version of a similar late night set with the very free tenor player Doh Alma who, with Thomas, went way out there on extended excursions. What was different though was that this was a workshop of compostions, some quite partial, with titles like Random Swing Tune, February 2024 Sketch #3, and Untitled from both him and trombonist KALIA VANDEVER. Her instrument can certainly play terse and experimental lines, but there is a mellowness that takes the edge off what an avant-garde saxophonist might do. To be sure, Rosewell Rudd and Grachan Moncur III among others played free music on trombone, but the instrument has an undeniably richness. They played seven tunes, so they kept the focus on the compositions which were terse and fidgety, not mere exercises but more atmospheric than tuneful and generally rather somber. I won’t parse the relationship to New Music but jazz really only broke out on a tune for bassist Kanoa Meldenhall who was in the audience and the last chorus of the tune that resolved into I’ll Be Seeing You. The closer had a nice figure shared between Thomas’s right hand and the horn and it was brighter than the others.
All that said, these shows met my expectations, both to stretch my ears and to be a little different than usual.

After advertising this to the void for three days, I just decided to fill in the characters I like/find interesting, and reinforce them with a random yautja because I happen to love those hunting fuckers.
The problems start when some of them are more detailed than the others :’) And I had to redraw my favourite prince, because in the first version he looked like Moira. Not entirely happy with him but, y’know, eh.

Note
I don't know if you already did this before but- what about the slashers reaction to a S/O that works as a tatoo artist?
I have not done this before, but this also reminded me I do need to update my masterlist so thank you. It’s the holiday weekend so we’ll see how well I can write…

Tattoo Artist S/O
Michael Myers
He would 100% let you tattoo him. Michael has probably always wanted a tattoo and just never had the means to get one. It’s hard to walk into a shop when you’re a wanted murderer after all. Plus, he most likely doesn’t trust other people enough to let them tattoo him. So feel special, cause it means he trusts you enough to take off his shirt and let you repeatedly poke him with a needle.
Michael respects tattooing as an art form. It takes a lot of dedication and precision to permanently place an image upon a persons skin.
He also just thinks it’s neat. Especially if you’ve done some of your own tattoos. He likes the way they look on your skin.
Probably has a weak spot for any red tattoos you have. We all know Michael loves the color red, especially on you.
Bo Sinclair
Again, would let you tattoo him but only after he trusts you enough. He can’t have you suddenly going rouge and trying to harm him with a tattoo gun. And lets be honest with ourselves here, Bo has trust issues so it’s going to take awhile.
He’s very indecisive about what he would want though. Luckily you know him well enough to come up with a few rough sketches of different ideas and placements just… pinky promise it will look good.
Also loves the tattoos on your own skin. Especially the more intricate ones with a lot of detail. He thinks that tattoos are hot in general.
Would try and get you to tattoo his name on yourself.
Vincent Sinclair
Vincent is glad that his S/O is also into art. He thinks you’re really good at what you do and loves to admire your work. I also believe that Vincent has a bit of a superiority complex… so h would be glad you’re into different art forms than he is because he doesn’t feel like he can be outdone by you.
With that being said, he occasionally will give you tips on things like placement and critique the details you add to any pieces.
Still, you’re great at what you do and Vincent knows it. So, he would be happy to let you give him a tattoo. After seeing his twin knives I believe he would go for something snake or Greek mythology themed.
Thomas Hewitt
Thomas would want you to incorporate some of his scars into tattoos to make him feel better about them. Don’t worry about hurting him, this man has an insane pain tolerance and he won’t even flinch no matter how long the piece takes.
Also likes watching you come up with concepts. You always add so many little details to even the rough sketches. He really appreciates the time, effort, and attention you put towards what you do.
Even though his very traditional family is against tattoos, Thomas loves them. At night, he enjoys tracing the ones on your own skin. He probably has each and every one memorized down to the smallest detail at this point.
Brahms Heelshire
Our uppity little English boy would not want a tattoo. His parents were very high class and snobby people so they most likely raised Brahms to think tattoos were for hooligans. In all honesty, Brahms may not even know what a tattoo is…
Once he sees the ones that you have though, he’s less against them. His eyes hungrily take in the way the black ink decorates your delicate skin, and he’s hooked. Brahms absolutely loves to look at them.
Also loves to watch as you draw ideas for new pieces. You just look so cute when you’re focused and he’s mesmerized by your sketches.
Billy Loomis
This man + patchwork tattoos= the hottest thing in the history of ever
Would be more than happy to let you tattoo him…you are doing it for free right?
Billy thinks that tattoos are cool and they definitely add onto his intimidating look. If you compliment them it definitely gives his ego a boost as well. You won’t be able to save yourself from this narcissist after he catches you eyeing the ink on his skin.
Also thinks that the tattoos on your own skin are very sexy. Please show him each and every one of them. Yes even if you have to take your clothes off, that’s the best part y/n.
Stu Macher
Stu is more than happy to let you use him as a human canvas as long as you promise to make him look cool. He trusts you enough to not mess up after he’s seen some of the amazing work that you’ve done.
Doesn’t really care what kind of tattoo you put on him. He’ll give you all the creative liberty, occasionally throwing in a suggestion that he would think’d be cool.
Likes the tattoos you have on yourself as well. Stu would be the one to think giving yourself a tattoo is insanely cool! He would never be able to concentrate on little details if he was stabbing himself with a needle.
Would let you give him a very stupid, simple tattoo. Like the really dumb line art ones. Also 100% down for matching tattoos. Even better! Matching stupid tattoos!
Asa Emory
You cannot convince me this man doesn’t have a butterfly tattoo like the one harry styles has. He most certainly does, end of story.
He wouldn’t let you give him a tattoo in a very visible place. As a professor he has to keep up his neat and organized appearance. Coming off as professional is very important to Asa.
He’s fine with your tattoos though. He appreciates your attention to detail in each of the intricate tattoos on your skin. Asa even enjoys watching you draw your ideas on paper.
Jesse Cromeans
He loves tattoos and is more than down to let you give him one. Please do, he’ll even pay you if you want, he doesn’t care.
If you give yourself a skull tattoo Jesse takes it as a confession of your undying love for him. After all, you’ve pretty much marked yourself as his possession anyways.
Needless to say he also loves seeing the ink you have on your own skin. Tattoos are a big turn on for him.

tattoo artist sukuna
Tumblr media
I am way overdo to get my sleeve finished and I’m already itching to get a full back piece, so this is right up my alley. Gender neutral reader, and if you’d like to see the tattoo style i reference please go to @/novchild.jpg on instagram :)
It was a spur of the moment decision that led you to drive downtown with your friends at nearly midnight, drunk off each other's energy and eager to do something reckless. Speeding down the motorway, you scrolled through Instagram in search of a tattoo artist.
“Are you guys sure about this?” Your nerves had finally caught up to you as the car was parked in front of the studio you all chose. It was a typical brick and mortar building with a large skull painted on the only window to the outside world. There were a few bald men smoking cigarettes right outside the door, scrawling ink covering their exposed hands and faces.
“Yeah, c’mon!” No one waited for you, everyone climbing out of the car in excitement. Slowly, you got out of the car as well, head down as you walked past the men and into the shop.
Loud, blaring metal music met your ears, jarring you upright and tense. There wasn’t anyone you could see at the front desk, the only workers were huddled in a back corner leaning over something and laughing.
“Which one should I get?” Your attention was drawn away from the men in the corner and to the art hanging on the wall, all different flash sheets from various artists. Some were more gory, clearly drawing inspiration from horror movies while other pieces were bright and colorful, like bubblegum pop come to life.
“Hey.” A gruff voice cut through the loud music, and a man was now leaning against the front desk, spiky black hair in a ponytail with a bored look on his face and several piercings in both ears. He was clearly sizing you up, the black bar going across his nose moving as he did.
Unprepared to speak to him, you were happy when someone else stepped in and started chatting about prices. The man at the counter had on a hoodie with the sleeves rolled up, exposing one full arm and hand that was completely blacked out.
“Choso, any customers?” Another shouted, a man wide in stature with long hair. He sauntered up to the counter, tight black t-shirt showing off the traditional Japanese work covering every inch of skin.
“Getou, can’t you see?” Choso rolled his eyes and gestured to your little group.
“I can’t make conversation?” Pulling a face at Choso, Getou leaned his elbows on the counter and flashed a wide grin at all of you. “So, who’s the first to get some ink?” His narrowed eyes looked over your bare skin and you could see the wheels turning in his head.
“I am! I want that one!” One of your friends pointed at the wall, making Getou hum and nod.
“That’s Gojo’s work, he loves to draw the cute shit. I’ll call him over.” As a white haired man walked over at Geto’s call, one by one your friends made their decisions and were paired with artists.
“What did you choose, (Y/N)?” A friend asked, seeing you still stuck staring at the wall.
“I don’t know!” Throwing your head back, you were beginning to regret even tagging along. There were simply too many options and the task of picking something was daunting.
“Having a hard time choosing?” A flash of white crosses your vision and soon Gojo is leaning down into your field of vision, piercing blue eyes staring at you curiously.
“U-uh yeah.” Stumbling back from how close his face is, you realize how tall he is when he stands up straight, hands shoved into his pockets.
“Me and another guy just got done making a new flash sheet, lemme show you.” It takes him only a couple seconds to go back to his station and come back with a piece of thick paper with drawings on it.
Taking the paper, the drawings were unexpectedly cute. A lot of them looked like rough sketches or crayon drawings, simple in concept but intricate in detail.
“I’ll take this one.” Pointing at a mid-sized crayon drawing, your mouth ticked up in a smile as Gojo took the paper from you with sparkling eyes.
“That one is so cute, good choice! One sec!” Tossing the paper down, he dashes away shouting nonsensical words towards the back of the shop where they’d all been huddled up. “Sukuna! Someones here for ya!”
Rising straight up from a chair with a loud groan, a shirtless pink haired man glared sharply at Gojo. Even from a distance you can see the sharp black lines tattooed across his face and down his body, circles on each shoulder, dashed lines across his chest down his stomach and around his wrists as well.
“Geez you can really yell, you know that?” Running a hand through his hair roughly, Sukuna stands up, flexing his muscles and unknowingly giving the whole shop a show of his chiseled physique.
“There’s a client here to get a piece we made together earlier.” Shoving the paper in his face, Gojo points to the piece you selected. Sukuna mumbles a few words and sets his eyes on you, walking over with a swagger that makes you nervous.
“Alright, where do you want it?” Leaning close to you, Sukuna quirks a brow.
“I don’t know.” You sigh softly, looking down at your arms and legs. “I don’t-”
“Your arm, right here.” Grabbing onto your arm, Sukuna turns it outward to expose the flesh of your inner arm. “It would look good right here, about the size of my palm.”
“O-oh okay.” Nodding quickly, your face is burning when he lets go. His touch still lingered on your skin, the edge of his black painted fingernails digging in briefly as they squeezed you.
“I’ll be ready in ten minutes, go sign the paperwork.” Sukuna speaks with his back to you, already walking to the station he had been sleeping at and setting up. Rushing to fill in the proper papers, you wait nervously at the front of the shop for your turn.
The rest of your friends are already getting started, the whir of the tattoo machines adding to the ambience of the shop. With a wave Sukuna calls you over to his corner, still shirtless with a pair of gloves on.
“Hold out your arm.” Grabbing you once again, Sukuna angles your arm in front of a mirror by the table. Rubbing ointment on your skin, he sticks the stencil on and rubs firmly, making you squirm from the tickle of his hand getting close to your armpit.
“What do you think?” Stepping to the side, he looks at you in the mirror. “Little to the left? Right?”
“No, it’s perfect.” The longer you look at it, the longer you love it. Giving you a pat on the shoulder, Sukuna led you to the table, having you lay down and stick your arm out.
“This your first one, I can tell.” He said, adjusting your body how he seemed fit and rubbing more ointment on you.
“It’s that obvious?”
“Oh yeah, only a first timer would get something like this from me.” A cocky grin spread across his face and he gestured to the wall behind your head, covered in realistic black and white portraits. “This is normally my speciality.”
“You drew yourself?” Pointing up at one of the pictures that looked exactly like him minus the face tattoos, you chuckled.
“Nah, that’s my twin.” Your brows rose in surprise and you looked between Sukuna and the picture.
“Does he have-?” You waved over your face and body.
“He’s too scared to get a tattoo, says he’ll get ink poisoning and die.” Sukuna laughed, pouring out the various colored ink into little cups. “Won’t even let me do a tiny dot on him!”
“Safe to say you two are pretty different then.” You found yourself laughing a little as well, eased at Sukunas laid back nature.
“Mhmm, he’s busy going on the straight and narrow while I’m here ‘ruining my body’ as our grandpa likes to say.” Flashing quick air quotes, Sukuna revs up the machine and fiddles with the buttons. “Alright, you ready for this? Won’t have virgin skin anymore after this.”
“Yes!” Clenching and unclenching your fist, you pushed a deep breath through your mouth.
“If you start to cry, I won’t stop. And if you pass out, I’ll just wake you up.” That was his final warning before he leaned forward, using one large gloved hand to spread the skin of your arm taut.
The first prick of the needle against your skin made you jolt, sucking in a sharp breath and making your eyes fly open. Sukuna snorted, wiped your arm with a towel and kept going. Honing in on the marks and exposed pipes in the ceiling, you tried not to twitch from the needle anymore.
“You’re doing pretty well.” Sukuna mumbled, briefly sitting up and dipping in for more ink.
“Really?” Taking a look at the tattoo, you were surprised to see only one line had been done. It felt like at least three were placed into you.
“Yeah, don’t screw it up.” Sticking his tongue out at you, Sukuna went back to work. Transfixed on watching him, you saw the lines go into your skin, overflowing with ink and being wiped away repeatedly. You were also watching the way Sukuna’s arms flexed, the muscles in his body all on display right in front of you.
“Tell me about yourself while you stare at me.” Sukuna said, not looking up from your arm. Immediately, your head whipped away from him and a deep burn ran over your face. Sukuna laughed at your embarrassment, patting your arm with the paper towel a few times.
“Sorry.”
“It’s okay, you’re not the first one to do it.” That didn’t make it any better. Slapping a hand over your face, you let out an unintelligible noise from the back of your throat.
“Just great.”
“It’s okay to say you have a crush on me, a lot of people that come to the shop do.”
“Sukuna!” Laughing through the shame, you glanced over at him.
“Hey, it’s the truth.” He shrugged nonchalantly.
“Well can you blame them when you’re built like that?” Feeling emboldened by the late night hour, you took a rather obvious look at Sukuna’s body. With only a pair of sweatpants on, you could see nearly all the tattoos he had.
“Aw thanks doll, I work out.” Sukuna shot a wink at you, briefly flexing both arms and making you blush again. “But enough about me, what about you? What made you come here so late at night?”
“My friends and I wanted to do something spontaneous.” Returning your gaze to the ceiling, the ache from the tattoo gun was beginning to settle into your skin. “And what better way to be spontaneous than to get a tattoo?”
“Ha, I hear that.”
“Why’d you get the ones on your face and stuff?”
“Thought they’d make me look cool, and I was right.” Giggling at his honesty, you quickly nodded in agreement.
“The ones on your face, did they hurt really bad?”
“The ones near my eyes yeah, those hurt the most. But thankfully Choso has a steady hand, so it didn’t last too long.”
Absentmindedly, you ran your fingers over your own face, drawing along the edge of your jaw and eye socket. There was no way you could get your face tattooed as heavily as Sukuna had, if at all ever. You had only just now gotten used to the pain of the needle on your arm and you were still twitching every so often.
“How’re you holding up so far?” Sukuna whispers close to your ear ten quiet minutes later. He’s completely focused on tattooing you yet his face is close enough that if you leaned up a little, you could graze his hair with your nose.
“Fine.” You whisper back, suddenly feeling awkward with the low tone of his voice.
“That’s good doll, real good.” His voice dropped even lower, overcompensating for the song ending over the stereo speakers. Trying not to stare at his serious expression, you look over at the other stations. Gojo is chatting up your friend excitedly, and there’s a number of colorful inks laid out before him. Choso and Geto are hard at work as well, with Choso pointedly not speaking, and a blonde man you’d noticed drinking a large mug of black coffee earlier with his button up sleeve rolled up to reveal two dragons on his forearms.
Just as the pain in your arm was starting to truly burn, the tattoo was over. Sukuna washed it down gently, patting your arm and humming to the song playing. Sitting up with a short grunt, he flicked his head to the mirror.
“Go ahead and take a look.”
Sliding slowly off the table, you held your arm out awkwardly and stood in front of the mirror. Your arm was slightly swollen and stinging, shoulder stiff from being in the same position for so long, but a smile spread on your cheeks.
“I love it.” It looked exactly like the picture: a crayon style drawing of a brown haired girl in a giant green frog, a big pout on her lips while the frog sat on a lily pad.
“Lemme snap a couple quick photos before I wrap you up.” Already with his phone out, Sukuna was quick at taking pictures, posing you like when he’d put the stencil on. “I’ll run down the aftercare stuff with you, also give you a card in case you forget any of it.”
You didn’t hear a thing he said about aftercare. Standing nearly chest to chest with Sukuna while he rubbed ointment on your skin and wrapped your tattoo up, the way his arms nearly wrapped around you to put the cover on, the gentle touch of his fingers pressing medical tape to your skin, even the way he was breathing softly and looking at you - it all had you distracted.
“Alright, you’re all done.” Sukuna patted your arm, breaking you from your trance.
“Thank you so much!” Looking down at your tightly bandaged arm, you could feel the intense heat radiating out of it. You quickly snapped your own picture of the bandage as Sukuna dug around in a drawer.
“And since I could tell you were zoning the fuck out just now, I wrote my number down on the aftercare sheet, so text me if you have any questions.” Holding the paper out to you, Sukuna had indeed scribbled his phone number on the paper in thick black marker.
“Can I really just text you?” Taking the paper hesitantly, you fiddled with it in your hands.
“Of course! I want your tattoo to heal well!” Sukuna nodded, throwing his arms out dramatically. Waiting for you to gather your stuff, he walked you to the front of the shop. “Text me anytime doll, I stay up late.” He whispered right before you got to the front counter, making your jaw drop and ears burn.
“(Y/N), you really got a girl in a frog?” A friend laughed, a bandage wrapped around their thigh.
“It’s cute!” You defended it, holding your arm close to your body.
“The cutest fucking one.” Sukuna added on, slapping the counter and pointing at everyone.
“Aren’t you cold without a shirt on?” Choso mumbled, typing away on his phone in the corner.
“No ‘cause I’m not anemic like you are.”
“It’s still cold outside.”
“Doesn’t mean it’s cold in here!” The two of them quickly devolved into petty squabble, giving each other light hearted shoves in the shoulder while Geto collected the money from everyone.
“Bye, thank you so much!” You all called out as you left, waving goodbye and shrugging your jackets back on.
“I’ll be waiting for that text, doll!” Sukuna shouted right as you stepped out, blowing you a kiss when you whipped your head over your shoulder in shock.
“Text? Were you flirting with him?” A slew of curious looks were thrown your way, making your shock even worse.
“N-no!” You stuttered and immediately grimaced at it, face getting warmer as you climbed into the car. “We were just talking while he tattooed me, he just wants to make sure it heals right.”
“Mhmm, whatever you say. Let’s go to the drive through now, Geto told me to eat something after getting tattooed!”
“Hey check Sukuna’s Instagram story, he already posted your tattoo (Y/N)!”
“Really?” Rushing to pull out your phone, it was indeed true. Sukuna had posted one of the pictures he took of your arm, a few silly frog gifs surrounding it, with the caption ‘painted a pretty doll with a pretty frog, hope they come back for more xx’.
“You two were definitely flirting!” Shouts resounded in the car, everyone giggling wildly at the caption. Giggling along with them, you quickly typed a message to Sukuna.
(Y/N): hey Sukuna this is (Y/N). Thanks again for the frog! And the picture you posted on your story looks really good :)
(Sukuna): no problem doll
(Sukuna): next time you want a tattoo, text me and i’ll draw up whatever you want
“Sukuna said he wanted to tattoo me again!” You announced to your friends, all of them oohing and crowding around your phone. “What should I say?”
“I’ll do it!” Someone snatched your phone before you could say anything, rapidly shooting off a message and tossing the device back to you.
(Y/N): are you free tomorrow?
“He’s not gonna-” Right as you were beginning to shake your head and type another message, he replied.
(Sukuna): for you? of course
