Terrible Fic Ideas #32: Game of Thrones, but make it Horatio Alger
My favorite part of GoT is the worldbuilding - just the massive scale of peoples, backgrounds, and cultures that exist and are encountered by the various POV characters. There are two massive continents worth of places to explore... and most of the time characters stay in a relatively small part of it.
Which got me thinking: what if Jon Snow pulled something out of Horatio Alger or one of Heinlein's youth novels? Which is to say: what if Jon packed his things, went on a wild adventure across Essos, and returned with riches and dragons?
Aka: The Aemon the Adventurous Fic
Just imagine it:
The Greyjoy Rebellion lasts on for longer than in canon. The Iron Islanders are better prepared in all respects and the fighting drags on for almost three years.
Lady Stark doesn't set out to use her husband's prolonged absence to isolate her husband's bastard - consciously at least - but that's what ends up happening. She's wrapped up in her own young children and honestly doesn't think that a baseborn child needs or should have access to the same level of education or training his trueborn siblings do.
Forbidden from joining Robb's lessons, Jon spends a lot of time training with the rank-and-file soldiers and the rest of it in Winterfell's library. One of his earliest discovery's there is an account of the nine great voyages of Corlys Velaryon. This, combined with the ongoing war with the Iron Islands, convinces Jon of the might of sea power.
In 291, after two years of war and two years of being essentially ignored by the inhabitants of Winterfell, Jon decides to just leave. He's eight years old, but Corlys was six the first time he sailed the Narrow Sea, and he can surely find a position as a ship's boy in White Harbor.
And that's exactly what he does. It shouldn't be so easy for a child to cross half the North on his own, but Jon manages it. (He cuts and dyes his hair to look less obviously like a Stark, in case anyone is looking, and calls himself Aemon after the Dragonknight.) And since ship's captains are used to unwanted sons trying to make a life for themselves at sea, Jon finds a job on The Septon's Daughter two days after he arrives.
Despite the blasphemy, the captain of The Septon's Daughter, Jasper Stone, is a lowborn man of the Vale who is an honest, pious follower of The Seven. He treats his crew well, and trades up and down the Narrow Sea, taking longer voyages to Ibben or Volantis every couple of years to trade for exotics. Jon learns a lot under him and comes to see Captain Jasper as a father figure.
In 294 they sail to Ibben. Jon's exploring the port when a conflict with Jasper's trading rival in the port forces The Septon's Daughter to leave without him. Jon ends up wintering in Ibben, learning the local customs and fighting style, and gaining a lot of goods he can resell at high markup in Pentos. Luckily, Jasper and The Septon's Daughter come back for him the next spring after wintering in Ifeqevron, and Jon rejoins his ersatz family.
Jon is able to make a tidy profit off his Ibbenese goods. So does Jasper with the woods he brings back from Ifeqevron. Together they decide to use it to expand their trading fleet. Just 12, Jon is made XO of one of these, Northern Lights.
In 297 they decide to sail south. Skipping past Slaver's Bay, they visit Qarth, Asabahd, Yin, Leng Yi, Jinqi, Asshai, Turrani, Zabhad, and Vahar before returning the Free Cities three years later. Several ships worth of exotic goods make them all very rich - especially Jon, who is by now captain of Northern Lights and second in command of the trading fleet.
But Jon, 17, has been plagued by Dragon Dreams since he first sailed past Valyria. After their return to Volantis, Jon takes the smallest ship in their fleet, Seasmoke, to Valyria on his own.
This should be a disaster, but somehow Jon manages to reach the ruined city. He enters a temple whose tunnels lead him straight into the heart of the volcano the city was built in the shadow of... and there Jon finds dragon eggs. Acting on instinct, he takes three - one pitch black, one pure white, and one ocean blue - marks them with his own blood, and builds a fire for them to rest in. He intends to do the same with a fourth - silver speckled gold - but ends up falling asleep with it before sticking it in the fire.
When he wakes up, the gold egg hatches into a full-grown woman, whom is eventually called Alyssa Belaerys.
What follows is an info dump (there are four kinds of magic in the world, fire and ice magic are opposed; Valyrian seers saw the coming of the Long Night and thought to prevent it by strengthening fire magic, but overdid it and destroyed their civilization instead. Without dragons, balance is lost. To restore balance, dragons must return. Dragonlords are descended from dragons who took human form like Alyssa, &c).
In the midst of all of this, the three other eggs hatch into actual dragons - called the Valyrian for Darkness, Snow, and Sea respectively.
Jon, Alyssa, and the dragons return to Volantis. Jasper is thrilled to see his adoptive son again, but less thrilled with his seemingly nonsensical plan to strengthen fire magic by strengthening dragons by becoming ruler of the Seven Kingdoms. Or: reconquer Westeros, save the world.
And so... Jon conquers Westeros.
Westeros is in shambles - long story short, Robert declared Cersei's children bastards and has been fighting a long war against the Lannisters over his choice to summarily execute his wife, her brother, and their children; Stannis died in the Greyjoy rebellion, so there's no strong admiral to counter the Ironborns' renewed raiding; the Vale has is own succession problems; &c - and Jon has lots of money, a loyal fleet, dragons, and a fierce Dragonborn bride in Alyssa.
They start with the Stepstones, take the Stormlands easily since most of their fighters are in the west with the Baratheons, and just... conquer one kingdom after another.
The truth - that Aemon Snow (as he's been going by all these years) is really Jon Snow, is really Rhaegar's second son - doesn't come out until it's time to replay Torren's submission of the North. It's a bit of a surprise, as Ned thought his nephew was dead after all these years, but ends well enough - though Jon is somewhat surprised to learn it took Lady Stark three months to notice he was missing.
Bonuses include: 1) Jon replaying the Field of Fire with the Lannisters and Baratheons; 2) lots of detail and expansion of the culture, history, and religion of every place Jon visits; 3) Captain Jasper really being the best adoptive father a boy could hope for, and 4) Jon going down in history as The Sea Dragon and Aemon the Adventurous and kicking off a new era of sea exploration for Westeros, including the discovery that sailing far enough west will bring you to the east.
...and that is far, far more than I thought I had. As always, feel free to adopt this bun, just link back if you do anything with it.
Other Jon Snow Headcanons: Aegon the Unyielding | Aemon the Adventurous | Baelor the Brave | Lady Arryn | Lady Baratheon | Lady Lannister | Lady Stark | Prince Consort | Prince of Summerhall | Queen Mother

just wanted to let you know that i will be patentinly waiting for you to elaborate on the yi city crew backpacking trip.
okay, so, half of me is like “you should sit on this so you can write a fic of this idea” but also a) me writing headcanons doesn’t preclude me writing a fic later and b) who the fuck knows when or if I would end up writing said fic.
so anyway, I am picturing, like. things have been stressful, and weird, and maybe the songxuexiao triad is figuring out how things are going to work but it’s all very tense and awkward still, song lan and xiao xingchen are kind of anxious around each other because of mutual uncertainty about where their relationship stands, xue yang and song lan are just short of loathing, xue yang is tense so he’s snapping at xiao xingchen too.
a-qing is frustrated and annoyed and also stressed because this is all happening in her vicinity and frankly she just thinks xiao xingchen should cut his losses and these other two idiots aren’t worth his time but, well, nobody’s listening to her, apparently. she would like! her weird family to get their shit together and stop being so goddamn weird so she doesn’t have to worry about getting axe murdered in her sleep when xue yang snaps.
(xue yang is like ‘I would not axe murder you, a-qing. I would not use an axe.’)
so anyway, a stressed out and anxious xiao xingchen desperate for everyone to get along and also in need of a break has the incredibly bright idea that actually what everyone here needs is a change of scenery, and to get some wide open space! and together time in a different setting! it’ll be restorative, you guys, we’re going backpacking in the wilderness.
song lan has probably gone camping before. he probably even has gone backpacking before, on short trips, with xiao xingchen, and while he’s enjoyed it he’s not at all sure about this idea.
neither a-qing nor xue yang has gone backpacking ever in their lives. neither of them is terribly hyped about this idea. a-qing agrees, sort of aggressively, because it seems like it’ll make xiao xingchen happy and hey! maybe it’ll be fun! xue yang agrees mostly to spite song lan and because he’s not letting everyone else go without him, that sounds even worse than this backpacking idea. and how hard can it be? it’s just camping. whatever.
there are a few problems here, before anything even happens:
only two people in this four person party have any real idea of what they are doing.
the majority of the dynamics in this party are either strained or negative.
odds are the planning is at least a little rushed because even though xiao xingchen knows better he is a little bit desperate to address his personal problems and has decided that this backpacking trip is the way to do that.
xue yang’s sense of caution is minimal and his impulsiveness is sky-high.
the bickering! the arguing over the right way to do things! it starts raining on, like, day two but xiao xingchen insists it is going to stop and they shouldn’t turn back (it does not stop). a-qing falls in a river (not, like, a deep one, but she is now soaking wet and very mad about it)! xue yang almost falls off a cliff because he’s being a posturing idiot about not being scared! one of the tents springs a leak!
song lan doesn’t adjust well to interruptions in routine or things going not as planned. xue yang is testy in general at the best of times and cat-grumpy about being wet all the time. a-qing is trying to be positive for the sake of xiao xingchen’s stress levels but this mostly means snapping at the other two because she’s not actually having a great time either.
the whole thing is just a clusterfuck and meanwhile poor xiao xingchen is barely holding it together and feeling like this is somehow his fault because it was his idea in the first place but also wants to tear his hair out because he’s getting more and more frustrated with everything going wrong. in his head he keeps going this is going to be a good story later, we will bond over everything being laughably terrible this will be a good! story! later!
I feel like if this were me writing an actual fic of it there would ultimately be some kind of genuine disaster where someone gets hurt or they’re temporarily stranded or something and it’s all very there was only one bed of them except forced conflict resolution instead of anything sexy.

saw your tags under this post and now i can't stop thinking! gay little a-qing and her gay daozhang!! like nothing makes me more emotional than little gays bonding with older gays about being gay it's jajdnwndjaks
yessss I love my whole yi city crew to be a queer disaster family! (gay daozhang, bi disaster from the ditch in the road and their little lesbian sister xD and the (gray)ace homewrecker(affectionate)! the whole squad!)
and yes the idea of gay little a-qing bonding with her gay daozhang-gege is so delightful! and I'm so happy you agree :D:D:D they are blind gay and lesbian solidarity! (I also love the idea of xxc helping a-qing figure herself out, because she has never liked boys like that, never found the idea of having a husband very appealing and knew she’s not like the society expects her to be but she felt so alone and different and unfitting. and then comes the tall gay gege and he’s like “ahhhh so you’re like my shifu” and maybe tells her about baoshan and lan yi and he’s a shitty storyteller but the content of the story is interesting enough that a-qing listens like enchanted. but she’s probably sad about the unhappy ending hgfjshdgjf nevertheless she’s absolutely delighted to hear about a disaster lesbian power couple and doesn’t feel so alone anymore)

1, 11, 21 for salty asks!!
1.
I don’t get where Xicheng came from. I get where the various versions of 3zun and Yi City Crew came from. I get where Chengxian came from. It doesn’t mean I like them, but I can see where people are coming from with those. Lan Xichen and Jiang Cheng both never interact, and are fundamentally at odds in many ways in their personalities. In addition, no fanfic with that pairing has convinced me it would be fun to read. It holds no appeal for me.
11.
I am a huge fan of Su She the hot disaster. XD I love him showing up, failing miserably at everything and actively making everyone around him roll their eyes. I love his petty stupid grudge and I love that Wei Wuxian just calls him out every time for being an idiot. He is such a hot disaster.
21.
Crack ships are so much fun!! While I haven’t written it yet, I have a die hard feeling for LXC/WQ that someday I will realize. Just give me good reasons why two characters might get along and I’ll give it a shot!

Taiwan train crash: Lorry boss offers 'deep remorse'
A construction site manager whose lorry slid on to a railway track and led to Taiwan's worst train disaster in decades has expressed "deep regret".
Lee Yi-hsiang, 49, said he was "deeply remorseful" and wanted to give his "most sincere apologies".
His flatbed lorry was parked on an embankment but slipped down it, causing the train to derail on Friday near the city of Hualien.
At least 50 people were killed and more than 200 injured in the crash.
Mr Lee was part of a team who regularly inspected Taiwan's mountainous eastern train line for landslides and other risks. He was also thought to be the flatbed's operator.
He was questioned over the weekend by prosecutors and released on bail, but on Sunday he was taken back into custody because he was deemed a flight risk and had a previous conviction, Taiwanese media reported.
Reading a statement to news crews outside his house, Mr Lee said he would co-operate with crash investigators, and "take the responsibility I should take". He was then taken away by police.

When it’s snow in Seoul, it’s melodramatic
What months does it snow in South Korea?
Incheon Airport to City by AREX
Harga tiketnya 9,500 Won | Rp. 114,000.

There are 2 classes of train: The All Stop Train that stops at every station and The Express Train that runs non-stop between Incheon Airport and Seoul Station. Picture courtesy by visitseoul.net
Harganya 5,000 Won | Rp. 60,000. Waktu tempuhnya 60 menit, ga beda jauh sama Express train. Worth it untuk berhemat. Bayarnya cukup pake T-Money, tinggal tap tap aja. Info lengkap tentang kartu transportasi ini bisa kamu baca di blog saya sebelumnya: Valentine’s Day in Seoul. Sekecup sepi dalam segelas soju

3. Cheonggyecheon Stream
Tumblr media
These day, Cheonggyecheon is famous for a dating spot. It’s relaxing to walk along a beautiful stream, take a break and peacefully people-watching
Tumblr media
Cheonggyecheon Stream used to exist merely as an overpass neglected in 1970 until it was restored in 2005, becoming a beautiful area. The result that makes Seoul a better city
Cheonggyecheon Stream
Recreational area constructed around a revived stream with walkways, bridges & greenery

4. Gwanghwamun Square
Tumblr media
The imposing statue of admiral Yi sun-sin, famed for his victories against the Japanese navy during the war in Joseon dinasty, a national hero of Korea
Dia memimpin banyak kemenangan melawan Jepang selama perang Imjin (1545-1598). Konon, dia tak pernah terkalahkan di laut. Ga tau kalo di udara.

His name is HAECHI. He’s a mythical beast, part lion, part dragon. His legend is as guardian of the old palace in a cute way. Imaginary creature as the symbolic icon of the city

7. Yeouido Hangang Park
Tumblr media

Tumblr media
There’s a lot of people walking, cycling, and jogging in this park. A best place to chill
Tumblr media
It’s such a peaceful sight to see Hangang river
8. Walking Randomly around Seoul
Tumblr media
As a typical Indonesia who has never got a chance to feel snow, the thought of winter strikes excitement. I enjoy waking up to chilling breezes since i’ve lived in a tropical climate
Seoul merupakan surga bagi pejalan kaki. Trotoarnya lebar dan nyaman. Gak dipenuhi tukang jualan maupun parkir motor.

The Farmer’s Dance is one of the oldest dance forms in Korea. It was traditionally performed during planting and harvesting season. Amazing dance to watch!
Don’t miss it!

Secret deals blamed for China testing blunders - Virus spread undetected
WUHAN, China, Dec 3, (AP): Secrecy and cronyism at China's top disease control agency led to widespread test shortages and flaws that hampered the early response to the coronavirus outbreak, an Associated Press investigation has found.
File Photo Feb. 5, 2020, photo, a medical worker in a protective suit walks by patients who diagnosed with the coronaviruses settle at a temporary hospital which transformed from an exhibition center in Wuhan in central China's Hubei province. Ten more people were sickened with a new virus aboard one of two quarantined cruise ships with some 5,400 passengers and crew aboard, health officials in Japan said Thursday, as China reported 73 more deaths and announced that the first group of patients were expected to start taking a new antiviral drug. (Chinatopix via AP)
China's Center for Disease Control and Prevention gave test kit designs and distribution exclusively rights to three then obscure Shanghai companies with which officials had personal ties, according to the investigation. It was based on interviews with more than 40 doctors, CDC employees, health experts, and industry insiders, as well as hundreds of internal documents, contracts, messages and emails.
The Shanghai companies - GeneoDx Biotech, Huirui Biotechnology, and BioGerm Medical Technology - paid the China CDC for the information and the distribution rights, according to two sources with knowledge of the transaction who asked to remain anonymous to avoid retribution.
The price: One million RMB ($ 146,600) each, the sources said. It's unclear whether the money went to specific individuals. In the meantime, the CDC and its parent agency, the National Health Commission, tried to prevent other scientists and organizations from testing for the virus with their own homemade kits.
They took control of patient samples and made testing requirements to confirm coronavirus cases much more complicated. The flawed testing system - at a time when the virus could have been slowed - stopped scientists and officials from seeing how fast it was spreading.
Chinese authorities failed to report a single new case between Jan. 5 and 17, even as hundreds were infected in Wuhan, the city where the virus was first detected. The apparent lull in cases meant officials were slow to take early actions such as warning the public or barring large gatherings. It also caused critical shortages of testing kits, barring access to care for many who were infected.
Mistakes The testing problems, along with other mistakes and delays, allowed the virus to rip through Wuhan undetected and spread across the world, in a pandemic that has now sickened and killed many.
China was hardly the only country to grapple with testing. In in the US, the CDC declined to use a WHO design and insisted on developing its own kits, which turned out to be faulty and led to even longer delays than in China. Still, the hiccups in China were especially consequential because it was the first country to detect the virus. “Because you have only three companies providing testing kits, it kept the capacity of testing very limited,” said Yanzhong Huang, a senior fellow for global health at the Council on Foreign Relations.
"It was a major problem that led to the rapid increase in cases and deaths." China's foreign ministry and China's top medical agency, the National Health Commission, did not respond to requests for comment. But interviews and documents suggest that a culture of backdoor connections quietly flourished in a top-down, underfunded public health system. Though none of the first three diagnostics companies tapped to make test kits were well-known in the industry, there were extensive ties between the companies and top China CDC researchers.
The founder of BioGerm, Zhao Baihui, was the former chief technician of the Shanghai CDC's microbiology lab. Emails and financial records obtained by the AP show that Zhao first started BioGerm's predecessor through an intermediary in 2012, while she was still at the Shanghai CDC. In the next five years, she sold thousands of dollars' worth of test kits to her own workplace through the intermediary.
After quitting the CDC in 2017, Zhao went on to spearhead lucrative contracts with Shanghai officials. Zhao did not respond to requests for comment from the AP. Another of the three companies, GeneoDx, enjoyed special access because it is a subsidiary of the state-run firm SinoPharm, which is managed directly by China's cabinet. In October 2019, GeneoDx co-organized an internal CDC training conference on emerging respiratory diseases in Shanghai.
Tan Wenjie, the CDC official who ran the training, was later put in charge of developing test kits. GeneoDx did not respond to requests for comment or interviews. The National Health Commission did not respond to a request for a comment or an interview with Tan.
The last company, Huirui, is a longtime partner with Tan, the CDC official in charge of test kits. In an interview, CEO Li Hui said the CDC routinely contracted his company to make emergency testing chemicals. He denied any personal relationship with Tan or any payments to the CDC. “We've been working with the CDC to respond to emerging new diseases for about ten years, not just for a day or two, it's normal,” Li said. It's unclear whether the agreements between the China CDC and the three test kit companies violated Chinese law.
They raise questions around potential violations of bribery laws, along with rules against abuse of authority, self-dealing and confl icts of interest, said James Zimmerman, a Beijing based corporate attorney and former chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce in China. But other experts caution that the state may have designated the three companies to make test kits under special laws on the procurement of emergency goods during natural disasters. “Things will be different in the middle of a crisis,” said Lesli Ligorner, a Beijing-based attorney specializing in anti-corruption law. "I wouldn't be so quick to rush to judgement." The first step in making test kits is to get samples of the virus and decode its genetic sequence. This leads to test designs, essentially a recipe for the tests.
Outbreaks In past outbreaks, the China CDC sent test designs and testing compounds to laboratories across the country just days after the pathogen. But this time, they held back the genome and test designs. Instead, they finalized “technology transfer” agreements to give the test designs to the Shanghai companies, according to three people familiar with the matter. The selection process was kept secret.
At the same time, central CDC authorities stymied others from testing. Provincial CDC staff were told that instead of testing and reporting cases themselves, they had to send patient samples to designated labs in Beijing for full sequencing, a complicated and time-consuming procedure. As a result, for weeks, local CDC staff were unable to confirm new cases. After a Jan. 14 internal teleconference to order secret preparations for a pandemic, China's health authorities relaxed the requirements to confirm cases and started distributing the CDC-sanctioned test kits.
A day after the first test kits finally arrived in Wuhan on Jan. 16, the case count began to rise again. But the test kits from GeneoDx and Huirui had quality issues, turning out inconclusive results or false negatives. And technicians were hesitant to use test kits that would later prove more accurate from more established companies, because the CDC did not endorse them.
As a result, in the early days, getting a COVID test was so difficult that Wuhan residents compared it to winning the lottery. Among the victims was Peng Yi, a 39-year-old schoolteacher who started coughing on Jan. 23. When he went to the hospital, he waited for eight hours, only to be turned away for a lack of test kits. Then, when he finally got tested on Jan. 30, it turned out negative, even as the virus ravaged his lungs. His second test, on Feb. 4, turned out positive. It was too late. Weeks later, Peng passed away. “There were very, very few tests, basically none… .if you couldn't prove you were positive, you couldn't get admitted to a hospital,” his mother, Zhong Hanneng, said in a tearful interview in October. "The doctor said there was nothing that could be done."
