wow, this is SO 2016 of me. i just found an "artemis crock from young justice in tokyo ghoul" au in my drafts

“If going to college is that dangerous, you might as well be an investigator,” her dad “hints”. Whenever her father hints at something, it’s more like he hits her over the head with a hammer. 

“I want to be a translator,” Artemis says again. She wants to learn how to talk to people, not how to kill ghouls. He spent enough of her early life trying to force her into that role before she became sentient enough to say no and her mother was paralyzed in the line of duty and decided that maybe, just maybe, she didn’t want both of her daughters putting themselves in danger too. 

“Mom, every time I’ve tried to eat the food tastes like it’s rotting in my mouth,” Artemis says. She’s so hungry but she can’t eat anything. 

“Artemis, look in the mirror,” her mother says, and her eyes are wide as moons. 

The whites of one of her eyes has turned black as coal and the iris glows bright red- like a- like a

“Ghoul,” her mother whispers. 

“Shit,” Artemis says. This can’t be happening. She can’t be a ghoul. She closes her glowing red eye and holds it that way for a moment. This has to be a stress hallucination or something. She opens it back up, sure that it will have returned to it’s normal white and grey. It hasn’t. 

“Artemis,” she says, “that boy- the one they switched your organs for, he was a ghoul wasn’t he?” 

“He was,” Artemis whispers. She didn’t know why the report that was passed onto her family didn’t include any mention of the boy being a ghoul and trying to eat her, but she decided that it was probably safer to just leave it be. 

“Artemis, please come sit down,” she says, “I have some things that I want to tell you.” Artemis lets her mom lead her over to the kitchen table and sits there, dejected. Her mother makes her coffee. She shoves a filter in the pot and then fills the holder to the brim. The house reeks of coffee by the time that she’s done and the liquid is as black as the outside of her eye. 

“Drink,” her mother orders, placing the steaming liquid in front of Artemis. She takes a sip and it’s the first thing that hasn’t tasted like rotting garbage in weeks. She takes another sip. And another. And another. It tastes so good that she could cry. 

“Ghouls can only drink coffee,” her mother says. 

“Oh,” Artemis says. 

“Not all ghouls are evil,” her mother promises her. 

“We have options. Your father and sister won’t buy it if you don’t eat, and I don’t think that you’ll be able to learn to pretend to eat quickly enough to avoid notice.” 

“I know a place you can go,” her mother promises. 

Paula Nguyen Crock was one of the most feared Ghoul Investigators before she was forcibly retired. 

“I killed or arrested the dangerous ghouls, but I overlooked the peaceful ones.” 

“Most ghoul investigators want them all dead, don’t they?” Artemis asks. She’s heard her father talk about ghouls like some kind of vermin to be exterminated for fun. 

“I’m looking for Giovanni Zatara," Artemis says. 

“Paula Nguyen,” Artemis says. If this cafe truly is full of ghouls, even speaking the name Crock will be a death sentence. 

“Dad,” the girl calls out, “there’s someone here to see you.” 

“I’m a ghoul,” Artemis says. 

“You look just like Paula,” Giovanni says, “there’s no way.” Artemis focuses on the feeling that she had when her eye glowed red. Giovanni’s eyes widen, and she thinks that means that she succeeded. 

“Someone made me into one,” Artemis says. 

“Why don’t you think that would be good?” 

“Well, um,” she doesn’t want to tell this man that she’d prefer not to commit to a cover where she’s his niece because his daughter’s kind of cute and she doesn’t want to family-zone herself. 

“Artemis Brookes,” she says.
