#ONEPIECE1049
Woo. Okay. Lots of different reactions to this chapter, but let's just dive in-
Chapter title: The world you wish for
First off, might be interesting to mention that on the cover page we see Yonji and Niji inside Mont d'Or s books, but someone lit them on fire so they're able to escape now... who could it? Perhaps Ichiji, I mean he does have the fire powers doesn't he? Oh well-
So in this chapter, we kind of get a glimpse on Kaido's past!! Some information we got:
At ten years old, Kaido was considered to be the strongest soldier of the Vodka Kingdom [Note how Kaido is from the Vodka Kingdom, and he's always drinking? Oda thinks he's so funny]
Also, this might have already been stated but I never caught on but 44 years ago, he was 15 years old which makes him 59 now!
Tumblr media
3. He was given to the Navy at 13 years old as collateral, or "Celestial Tribute" to ensure that the Vodka Kingdom could have a place at the Reverie.
4. He got his first bounty at 13 years old with 70 Million Berries
Tumblr media
5. We previously got some information about his captures, and apparently he gets captured by the Navy so he could get some food and then escapes. This man is completely unhinged, he got captured 18 times by the Navy simply to get food.
6. Approached by Whitebeard when he was 15 years old (who was part of Rocks' pirate crew at the time) and told that Rocks is interested in him - he really was such a big name already at 15 that he got noticed and recruited by the most powerful pirate crew.
7. Then we get to God's Valley and of course get no extra information except-
Tumblr media
STOP. SLEEPING. ON. GARP'S. NAME.
This is not new information per se, but I just want to reiterate it because everyone is always sleeping on Garp's name! Sure he teamed up with Rogers to do it but this was the strongest pirate crew at the time. Rocks. Whitebeard. Big Mom. Kaido.
8. There's some weird old lady in his past that seems to spur a lot of things on for him...
Tumblr media
Might be his mother? She looks sort of familiar, a little Yamato-esque I'm not going to lie, and they look similar. I wonder if we'll find out who she is because she seems relevant. I mean, this is what she tells Kaido-
[Edit: I completely forgot about this lady but thanks to @danwhobrowses i was reminded: "the old lady is Kurozumi Higurashi, the old lady who pushed Orochi to plot against the Kozuki and gave him his DF, she had Bon Clay's DF before Kaido killed her for posing as Momo and distracting Oden"
If you study history, humans have always resorted to brutality to solve the world's problems. But then again, humans are just like any other animal. "Survival of the fittest" is our true nature.
Seems to shape much of Kaido's own views because he goes around to later tell his crew:
Let's show all those "peace-loving nobles" the hell-ish reality of war!! One's worth can only truly be gauged in battle!! Where everyone is equal and anarchy reigns free.
Kaido is just obsessed with fights, and proving your worth in battle. It's shown a lot in his past too, he was the strongest soldier in his kingdom by the age of 10, sold to the navy by the age of 13 because of his strength and ever since has never been defeated. He is obsessed with the idea of looking for someone who can defeat him - because he thinks whoever defeats him will be Joy Boy.
Remember I mentioned some chapters ago that Kaido believes that he is Joy Boy? Well, clearly that's not the case. When he said "So you couldn't be Joy Boy either?" to Luffy he wasn't referring to himself, but to everyone to go up against him and fail to defeat him.
Tumblr media
He's been waiting patiently for that man to appear. 20 years ago he found out that Oden was waiting for Joy Boy in Wano and believed he would appear, so he resided himself in Wano to wait for Joy Boy. Another interesting question: King was waiting for Joy Boy? For what reason?
Anyways!! So back to the present!!
So Luffy is punching Kaido right, and Kaido asks
What kind of world do you want to make?
Tumblr media
A world where my friends can eat as much as they want-
Tumblr media
That's my kind of world!!!
And Kaido falling down after this, and after he expresses the fact that whoever defeats him will be Joy Boy - King saying "I don't think he'll ever appear"
And the lanterns coming up:
Please vanquish the scary dragon.
Restore the Kozuki clan.
Tumblr media
Here's my thing now. This dragon is clearly not Kaido, it's Momo (after saving Onigashima and Onigashima landing safely!) Luffy is falling. Where's Kaido? It seems like he's done (seeing the lanterns and the emotional impact) but is he really?
My reaction to this is: I'm okay with it either way. If he' defeated or not. And I understand that some people wanted more from Kaido, and more from his flashback - but the hate? Saying Wano is trash if this is it? That's all agenda talk. Shut up, this was a great chapter. Luffy did so much.
Break next week, this is gonna be a tough two weeks.

So, I have mixed feelings over this. I mean if anyone deserves a break it's Oda but 1 month without One Piece is gonna be so painful XD
Does this mean Wano will end in the next 3 chapters? (since the break starts on the 26th/27th until the 25th July) Feels like there's so much we've yet to cover; Zoro's heritage, Poneglyphs, Kaido and Big Mom, the WG on the outside, shit is still happening!
And then the fact that they say 'final saga'
I mean I know the final saga can still be like 2-10 years of stuff (Yonko saga started in 2015 so we've had it for 7 years, a final saga could easily go bigger) depending on how many arcs are left, but still the feeling is jarring. One Piece is entering its final saga, think about that!
I don't think I've ever mentally prepared for it to end, I don't think I even could.

Fishman Island Is Now Luffy's
Since Big Mom is defeated and Luffy is now an emperor does that mean Fishman Island is now officially his? before Luffy said he would eventually take it from her, but now that she is gone he has the best claim. 1) He is a yonko 2) The King and general population have agreed 3) He has already defended it against a threat and 4) his flag is already there. Since Luffy is now a yonko he has enough influence to claim territory so his claim should be valid and I want to see him claim Alabasta and the other islands he has friends on.

After Wano it's safe to say Monkey D Luffy is now one of the most powerful characters in all of One Piece but a lot of people really don't know where to pinpoint his strength exactly either he's the strongest dude in the One piece verse or exceptionally strong due to his victory against Kaido.

It just irks me when in the OP fandom people start speculating who’s going to be the new Strawhat, when there’s still so much focus needed on the other ones. Like, we don’t have time for a new member when the other ones (other than the monster trio) aren’t given enough time and focus.
This wouldn’t be such a big problem if there wasn’t the big debate on who is more “useless” pre time-skip or post time-skip. Or “the Strawhats are a yonko crew, and they should all have haki by now.”
Adding on to that, the recency bias doesn’t help the whole matter either. The same ones who push for a new Strawhat member also criticize the Strawhats as a whole because of the non-monster trio members having not unlocked any haki, or because some can’t 1v1 an adversary. Usopp has haki but those naysayers say it “doesn’t count”.
It’s all nonsense, of course, but admittedly it gets to me.
Tumblr media
So, why do we need one more Strawhat?

I wonder what Enel is up to in space....
Like seriously. What has he been up to? We're in the final saga of the manga and we haven't seen hide or hair of electric slim shady in years.
My guess if that he found a civilization that worshiped him as a god and where there's no rubber boys to challenge him
He is content.
And maybe he decided to come back to earth, saw that that silly rubber kid that served his own ass to him all those years ago is now being called 'the fifth yonko of the seas' and went 'nope'

The Soul Eater defense screenshot does make an interesting point I never considered: One Piece is kind of the definition of "Journey over destination", and it's kinda detrimental to reader enjoyment to engage with it as a narrative arc rather than a means to explore a universe and its inhabitants.
honestly i completely disagree - as you can tell im in the middle of my ace attorney 5 liveblog so id like to address this quickly so i can go back to playing 😭😭😭 nonetheless imo one piece's structure actually lends itself incredibly well to self-contained narrative arcs that are strung together in overarching sagas which follow some thread because of the fact that the conflict is largely contained to the singular island our characters are frolicking around on. if that makes any sense at all. like take the punk hazard -> dressrosa -> zou -> wci -> wano saga - all of these islands had unique plots with particular themes and ideas that oda wanted to explore, but form a coherent narrative arc with luffy's progression towards becoming pirate king by dethroning a yonko and taking their poneglyphs (which was explicitly set up in punk hazard with the heart/straw hat alliance). also.... one piece is hugely narratively driven. like as far as shonen goes you're not gonna find a series much more narratively driven than one piece imo - obviously the universe and its inhabitants are inextricably tied to the themes and overarching messages and ideas of the story, but to imply that op is not is... a bit . weird. to me 😭😭😭

One Piece posting
So I've recently catched up with the One Piece manga (as of now, chapter 1100) and have some things to say. (unmarked spoilers for OP below)
I have read One Piece since 2015, and my modus operandi always is to wait a bunch and read a significant block of chapters, ideally a years worth. Factoring that in, I can finally say the Wano arc really tested my patience.
Wano is the longest arc in the series! And i'm not talking the saga (that started ten years ago) Im talking the get-in-the-island get-out-the-island part! Luffy got in Wano in early July, 2018 - and left mid August, 2022, that's four years! And the final showdown in Kaidou's base, the climax of two years of preparations, politics, backstory - took two whole years to boot. It was kinda sad, getting my fresh one piece dose and it's 50 chapters of the same of last year! I glad that is over!
--
Luffy is a zoan-user now, and I saw a good comment stated by a very vanilla wish-fulfillment-protagonist in a isekai one piece fic: Zoan users are - as stated on the manga by various sources - shaped by the animal of the devil-fruit they eat. Carnivorous zoans are more agressive, and so on - this is heightened when the user awakens, sometimes with the user losing their personality and becoming a single minded beast, as was the case with the mino-animals in Impel Down. The point here is: Would a devil-fruitless Luffy be all that friendly and freedom fight-y, had he not eaten the fruit of the Laugh-and-Freedom-Fight-GOD? Was he always like this, or did the Nika inside him ate the person and left the shonen protag? I (like the fic MC that made the coment) don't think one piece is this kind of story - and when we find out what is luffys True Dream (that being Pirate King is only a stepping stone to) is, it will probably be something very Nika like, even if the dream is older than the God-Possession.
--
We got Bartolomew Kuma's story and ho boy, is it a kick-in-the-feelings. Oda loves mistreating us, it's sadness porn all the time, but we are masochists and keep coming back for more. The World Nobles are like a whole nation of Jeoffrey Baratheons, really gives me the desire to cross the screen and strangle them one by one.
--
Oda takes his sweet time introducing loads and loads of new characters and going out on tangents, but I gotta give it to him: I fully believe that when one piece ends, there will be little to none loose strings - the man will lay everything on paper, from the backstory of the world to that of significant major players. In this stretch after Wano, we already got a lot of Revolutionary backstory covered, and also the God Valley - a central point in Garp and Rocks pirates lore.
In the same vein, I like how Oda gives us a progressively more clear view of the past: Legends become events you see in person, and legendary figures become humane. When One Piece started, Gold Roger was this paragon, unattainable pinnacle of a pirate, a very much tell don't show kinda deal. Now we know how he fought, what he liked, how he behaved - And it's nothing 'out of this world' - we even know his bounty and how it compares with those alive today, and it's a value that it's high, but not absurd. A slightly more expensive yonko, but yonkos are - today - beatable antagonists.
--
Speaking of Bounties, my bet for highest bounty is this: Monkey D. Dragon - 10 Billion Beri, give or take a few hundred million. It rounds off nicely in a universe where World Gvt level threats (yonko) that aren't trying to destroy the government are valued 5 Billion 'and change'.
--
The moment Nico Robin discovered that the books of Ohara were saved and the research her friends and family died to protect melted my heart - this was the reading-sprint kick in the feelings i was not expecting, but took with tears in my eyes and a smile in my face.
Tumblr media
Yeah, this feeling.
