interesting. very interesting that soohyun told gaon she liked him ONLY when he was anguished aka when he "cried."
5 times he cried, 5 times she told him she liked him, 5 times she got rejected.
i think she thought saying those words would comfort gaon when in actuality it didn't thus the rejections. Which also makes me think she never truly LIKED him romantically. I think she romanticized her own sympathy for him & in turn made a projection of gaon in her head.

Soo-hyun, concerned: "Why are you limping,?"
Gaon, sweating: "I-uh, fell off my bike?"

Do you have any controversial opinions about The Devil Judge?
this is a tough question tbh because as a whole, the tdj fandom is pretty...level-headed. we all have our disagreements about things, but it's not so much controversy as it is we know our opinions differ on certain topics. that itself is one of my favorite things about being a part of this fandom. you rarely see discourse, and when you do, it's quickly shut down because we're just not here for that kind of drama
but i suppose i do have some opinions that a good portion of the fandom might not agree with? idk if you would even consider it that lol. anywho,
soohyun isn't default a bad person. she's actually really fucking human. i don't much care for her as a character, but all the manipulating she did to gaon was very human. she genuinely believed that what she was doing was the right thing, and because she didn't understand yohan, she saw him as the enemy. but the next part is where i think a lot of people might disagree with me: her most human moment in the entire show was when she used stopping talking to gaon altogether as an ultimatum to get him to leave yohan's side. you don't have to like or dislike her to acknowledge that she's a very realistic character
yohan sees a lot of isaac in gaon. i feel like people are afraid of accepting this because they think it implies yohan was also in love with isaac, which...it doesn't work that way. gaon and isaac are both very compassionate people with a very heated opinion on what is right and what is wrong. they both detest seeing others suffer. they both saw something in yohan that others can't. it is perfectly acceptable for him to fall in love with gaon because he shares traits that yohan happened to love about his brother too. it doesn't have to mean gahan is incestuous. the facts that yohan saw traits in gaon that he knew from isaac and that yohan is in love with gaon can and should exist in the same space and it's not gross to acknowledge this because love isn't just exclusive to romance and you can love two very similar people in two very different ways
the mentality that sunah is simply attracted to shiny things and that's why she was attracted to yohan irks me. i see this in tags every so often and it's probably one of the things i disagree with the most? she was genuinely in love with yohan. she saw bits of herself in him, like his manipulative nature and his vengeful tactics. she fell for him but she was also very, very jealous of him. using gaon to destroy him didn't work even when she thought it did, because there's never going to be a time when gaon is truly, wholeheartedly going to walk away from yohan, and she would never know what it feels like to not be lonely. if anything, she grew to acknowledge that all the shiny things she'd collected by the end of the show didn't compare to having actual love and affection, which yohan was never going to give her. she was also just very bitter that yohan did get his happy ending and she didn't
the female characters dying in the show weren't killed off because the writers hate women. don't get me started on this one. soohyun died because she meddled too much, minister cha died because she saw no other escape from the corner yohan and his team had backed her into. sunah died of her own volition because she wasn't going to lose to yohan even when she was facing the end. they were all very strong women and the show spared no expense making sure we knew that
gahan is canon. it's not fanon, it's not just queer-coded. it's canon. just because they didn't kiss doesn't mean they weren't in love. physical intimacy isn't the only indicator of romantic love
i agreed with every single one of yohan's decisions in the live courtroom. would have loved to see bamboo spear fried right there. gaon probably did save yohan in a way by stopping him, but i still would not have been mad if the execution had been finished
i see a lot of posts going on about how much yohan adores elijah and i 100000 percent agree but i have yet to see a post mention how yohan also continues to raise elijah for isaac. it's a given, but as dedicated he is to his niece, he's also got that same loyalty toward his brother
yohan is manipulative. he knowingly uses gaon, just like sunah and soohyun did. only difference is he did it for all the right reasons and wound up caring for gaon in the process.
i really can't think of anything else, and tbh most of these aren't all that controversial. i absolutely love being a part of this fandom and i'm not going anywhere because of how everyone just seems to be way more rational here than in the other fandoms i've been a part of

very unrequested take, but I think they are cute together.
also, when it's time for So Yoon's origin story, they cut to K's reaction - him biting his lip.

At A Distance Spring Is Green (2021) // Weak Hero (2022)
I actually hate to put Spring is Green next to Weak Hero bc Weak Hero makes everything look like trash in comparison but I love these clips together bc I think they show 1.) Park Ji Hoon's growth as an actor and 2.) how they accomplish similar goals in directly opposite ways. They both flip the switch on their characters, revealing new sides to them with just a change of expression.
Yeo Joon, who wears his smile and geniality like a shield, and let's it drop in a moment of frustration with Soohyun, who refuses to be moved by it. Yoon Sieun, who is experiencing love and friendship for the first time -- both giving it and receiving it. And who is caught off guard by the way Suho sees right through him, maybe even through to something Sieun hadn't been able to fully recognize in himself. In both moments, they are revealing a truer side of themselves to people who see right through the shields and perceptions they give off.
And in both, the audience sees a new side of the characters for the first time. One of which is chilling, and a little alienating -- maybe we don't know Yeo Joon at all. Maybe he's not quite as innocent or pathetic as we thought. Suddenly, we're seeing there's a real tangible darkness under the skin of him. The other, is equal parts heart-breaking and heart-warming. Under Sieun's aloofness and cold demeanor there's a sweet boy who loves his friends deeply and sincerely. He is also learning, for the first time, that he's a good person.
They're like equal and opposite reactions, and that makes them fun for me to pair together. Dropping a fake smile and gaining a real one.

i did another thing. posted the first chapter to my mulan/tdj au called 'Solidarity in a New Dawn' which is over on ao3! there's a snippet of the opening under the cut if you're interested. ao3 is the same here: stars_after_dark
SNIPPET:
He mixes the porridge and the soup at the same time, also checking on the tea in the small teapot over the smaller fire. The porridge is ready, but the chicken isn’t tender enough in the soup. All the same, he picks up the teapot with its cups and the entire pot of porridge.
“Dad,” Gaon says as he watches his father stumble into his room. “I could’ve gotten it myself, you didn’t need to trouble yourself.”
His father tuts and takes the empty bowl from the floor. He scoops in a heap of porridge, then pours a hefty cup of tea. “Your mother is out buying some more herbs and presents for Soohyun.”
Gaon sighs. “What time is it?”
“Time for you to have your porridge, that’s what time it is.”
His father helps him sit up against the headboard and spoons out some porridge for him. His hands shake as he takes the spoon so he eats it quickly, nervous about spilling it. It’s tedious, especially with having to wait for a moment at which no porridge will fall from his tremors, but his father sits with him patiently and talks while pouring their many cups of tea.
“How are you feeling today?” Gaon asks. “You’re very lively.”
“I feel like I could wrestle three bulls at the same time! You see, if you eat all of your porridge and drink your tea as you should do, you’ll be fine.” His dad downs the rest of his tea. “This sickness in my heart is too scared of the power of ginger and turmeric.”
“But Dad, you know I can’t stand the taste of turmeric, and it stains my teeth.”
He tuts again and pours Gaon’s third cup. “Three in the morning, three in the evening, that’s what the doctor said.” Gaon’s starting to resent her a little more with every sip. “Turmeric doesn’t taste of anything, you're too fussy.”
“It tastes like dirt.” A cup is shoved in his face. “Drink.”
He chuckles and sips the tea, now warm.
His dad shifts to lean against the wardrobe. “How are you feeling, my son?”
Gaon shrugs. “Better than yesterday. Still a bit weak, but I think I’ll be able to go out properly for spring this year.”
His dad smiles and rubs his arm. “I wish we knew,” he says quietly, “I wish we knew why.”
Gaon chuckles and takes his dad’s hand in his. “I don’t think we’ll get an answer even if we ask every year. Things like this happen.” He breathes in and looks out of the window. “The cherry blossoms will start to bloom soon.”
Gaon’s father watches him gaze beyond their window and slowly stands up. He tries to hide the pain in his chest as he takes in a deeper breath. “Come,” he says, grasping Gaon’s arm, “there’s over an hour before Soohyun’s assessment. She’ll be getting ready now.”
The both of them walk slowly to the bathroom where Gaon freshens up. When he goes back to their open kitchen, his mother is frantically storing herbs in ceramic pots and putting sets of jewellery on the table.
“Quick, choose one,” she says, gesturing vaguely at the table.
Gaon runs his fingers over a purple ribbon for hair tying. Next to it is a different ribbon in a jade colour. He takes the purple in his hand. It would match Soohyun well. From the selection of necklaces and bracelets, a necklace of indigo pearls with swirls of vibrant violet swirls catches his attention immediately. Between every three pearls is a pink star which glitters in the sunlight. It’s the most artistic and elaborate between the rest of them, and an instant match for Soohyun.
His mother laughs. “I said one .” She packs the rest away in a fabric bag. “You have a good eye for these things. Are you ready? We’ll have to go now if you still want to see her as she’s getting ready.”
Gaon nods and goes for his thick cloak. It’s padded with miscellaneous things, from collected lint off of his clothes to the dead hair that falls from his and his mum’s scalp when they brush through it. It’s the thickest, heaviest cloak of the three there (and the most expensive too). Gaon sighs just thinking about how heavy it rests on his shoulders.
He turns to his father who’s sitting at the kitchen table. “Will you be alright on your own?” he asks.
His dad nods and waves a dismissive hand. “Go, go. I’ll be fine. Give Soohyun my best wishes.”
With a smile, Gaon pockets the gifts, links with his mother’s arm and they leave the house, waving his father goodbye.
^this is just a snippet of a longer, 7000 word chapter lmao
