also the subtle racism in that consignment post implying that BTS is such a big contributor to SK economy that them enlisting would somehow have an impact on the whole country's finances like. okay sure lmfao
Yeah.... yeah.... that's what I mean. All armies are religiously like this, viewing their boys (always boys because of the infantilisation and feminisation of adult Korean men by armies, simultaneously emasculating and absolving them from accountability as babies who don't know better - OP of that post also wrote a very telling "list of problematic things BTS have done" post where the running theme was a pathetically stammering "b-but they apologised!" on the 20th incident of racism or something) as exceptional cases to the rest of the Korean heathens in their backwards home country. Our boys speak up about politics in their songs, so they're basically radical leftists, unlike anybody else in the evil backward country they're from. Also, their stupid home country (filled with losers who don't appreciate them enough) 's economy depends on their existence for a pulse, and they have the audacity to treat my boys like this...!?!??!? Nuke 'em all!!!
... It feels distinctly like when western fans talk about saving their boys from conscription it is coming massively from a place of white saviorism - even if they correctly cite information or make accurate critiques of the ROK military, they only start caring about Korean history and politics when it pertains to their boys, and will stop giving a damn the second it stops impacting them. Bad vibes all around.

South Korea Inaugurates Yoon Suk-yeol as President
South Korea Inaugurates Yoon Suk-yeol as President
SEOUL — Yoon Suk-yeol, the new president of South Korea, was sworn into office in Seoul on Tuesday, using his inaugural speech to make promises to heal political and economic divides at home, to fight for international norms and to offer an ambitious package of economic incentives to North Korea. Mr. Yoon is taking office at a time when conflict in Ukraine and democratic backsliding around the…

Hi auntie, can you explain something? People keep saying they think bts will all enlist together. I have a sad time thinking about the group being partial for many years but isn't it impossible business that they all enlist at once? There is too much money opportunity. Sorry to be crude but jungkook is too valuable to lose 2 years now when he could enlist at 30 when the group is probably not together. It's hard for fans to see them all split but the maknaes all are too popular, and the company makes financial decisions. Thank you
Hi sweetie! I did not want to answer this, especially not today, but new info is important. I have a sad time thinking about it, too. But Seokjin is required to enlist - and his paperwork was due two weeks ago. So even though you sent this ask a couple of months ago I've been holding it until I could address it properly.
Tumblr media
I THINK - I don't know for sure - that if Jin enlists, some of or all of the others may go ahead and do it too. Here's why. 1 - If they all go in together, it is very likely that their service will get shortened. Like, it's supposed to be 20 months. Some people get out in less time if their absence causes issues for their work OR if they have enough money and influence to get it shortened. BTS is a perfect candidate for a shortened term. The way Kevin From Itaewon explained this to me is that some kids of government officials get out in just over a year. Because the Korean government is not immune to favoritism, and if there is enough money involved for campaigns, etc., well. It's not unlike the US, that way. And who has more money and influence in Korea than BTS?
Tumblr media
Kev told me that he knows one guy who, several years ago, got out in EIGHT MONTHS. The new President, Yoon Sukyeol, is very, very conservative. Like he's right of Trump levels of conservative. And everyone would be watching BTS so it would not be good press to let them out too early, but a token member or two enlisting might be enough to exempt the group if their absence causes enough uproar in Korea. 2. With the already-announced hiatus, we know that the comeback will be incredible, will make huge bank, the tour would sell out of course, and they could have a genuine return instead of years and years of rolling enlistments and less-than-OT7 content. If they wait until Jungkook is thirty, Jin will be 35 years old - not ancient but dang how long do we want the man to wait to have his own life? Same for Yoongi, he's the same age nearly.
Tumblr media
3. As of yesterday there is some new info which says there will be a video statement from the members re: enlistment within the next ten business days. Probably it will be released next week. Much like yesterday, the members will tell us what we need to know. I don't think I like it, if that info is true, but I have no reason to disbelieve it as it has now hit K-media in the last 12 hours.
Tumblr media
My information before yesterday was that decisions had been made but would not be released much before actual enlistment. So Seokjin and maybe Yoongi might actually be going in ahead of schedule. Hobi and Namjoon would have another full year to get that exemption. None of them would make it to a new President - in Korea they serve a single five year term with no re-election - but they could make it to new legislation, possibly. Unfortunately, the exemption bill is dead in the water and the new legislative term doesn't even start until September.
Tumblr media
One thing I hadnt really thought of is that some of the members might WANT to honor their country by completing their service. They've never said, specifically. We want them exempted of course, but none of them need more money. The company wants more profits, but they can't go around the government.
And the government has interests both ways. I guess we'll hear - or not - sometime in the next week.

what's the state of women's right in Korea rn, how has yoon sukyeol affected things
Honestly not sure since I'm not living there anymore. But I know for sure kormoids elected a underqualified MRA(Yoon) for president purely out of their misogyny and now everyone's suffering the consequences. 😑 Also after short waves of feminist renaissance there is a great backlash against it. The movement is suffering BUT persistent still!!!!! There are tons of women who had a taste of radical feminism in Korea and they aren't going back. Well some did, but not a significant number I believe.

In lieu of Yoon Sukyeol entering the Blue House yesterday (May 10, 2022), here's a reminder of his main campaign promises:
You may have already heard that he promised to slash funding for the single mothers' and child rearing welfare program.
He also promised to abolish minimum wage, and humane working hours (this would mean that companies could put employees through 100+ hour workweeks without getting sued).
Yoon also looks to privatize South Korean national healthcare. This idea has been popular with wealthy conservatives for a long time as it's a way to amass money (like in America).
He has also threatened to put anyone who spoke against him in prison if he were to come into office.
And here's just some of the Many things he's pulled even before entering office:
Projected to raise college admissions and attendance fees, essentially backstabbing the 20-something's men who cast a ballot for him. (Like I don't feel bad for them bc this is the bed they chose to make, but you need to see that he's not even helping his own supporters.)
In April, he tried to make (now former) President Moon Jaein clear out the Ministry of Defense's HQ up in the north bc his religious cult advisors said he shouldn't enter the Blue House (equivalent of the US White House). Once again, this was when he literally wasn't even in office yet. To do this would mean that all security measures installed around the Blue House would have to have been uprooted, costing TRILLIONS of won. Of course Moon refused, to which Yoon proposed that he would "commute from [his] home every day," but this would mean completely shutting down all traffic and blocking internet connection for 2+ hours every morning during his commute.
He also spilled the locations of the presidential bunkers as in he literally pointed them out on TV broadcast, pointing on a map like, "One here... and here."
Yoon also revealed that there's an armored car to transport the president and his closest advisors in case of extreme emergencies. (He had proposed that he held meetings in the car, after his "plan" to move presidential HQ to the north was rejected.) The existence of this car was a closely guarded government secret that no one was supposed to know; Yoon has committed treason, and the only reason he's not in jail right now is because the conservative media is shielding him.
