Blade Runner 2029 #1
Titan

I finished The Buried Dagger and it has left me with Thoughts on Loken. Mostly that I should have read this one a lot earlier.
Spoilers and thoughts below the cut

😔
Tumblr media
Malcador tries to give him a new name as one of the founders of the Grey Knights, but he rejects it. In front of the Emperor, no less. Boy has balls of steel.
Tumblr media
Now this is INTERESTING. Malcador has earlier said this to another Knight, Yotun:
Tumblr media
There's a lot in this chapter about how Malcador has travelled all the possible futures:
Tumblr media
And then he says that to Loken. 'Horus will destroy you.' It's not a threat to try and make him change his mind. It's a fact.
I think we've been told already what will happen to our boy.
Tumblr media
'Cerberus will not save you', though. Malcador, what did you mean by that?

A-Hunting We Will Go
Tumblr media
"The Cottage at the Foot of the Mountain" by John Bauer
****
1. ENTERING THE FOREST
Erik's hands gripped the rifle. His eyes trembled upon the high mountain peak, which rose up before him like a jagged, black tooth. To get there, he'd need to cross the pine forest.
God help him. There was no other way.
It was Erik's fault that the Yotun had come. His fault that Farfar was gone. That made vengeance his responsibility. Maybe it was his fate.
His face hardened at the thought. It had all started just like this — him with a gun in his hands, legs moving through the tall grass, as his eyes scanned the fields and fell upon something at the tree line.
The wild hare had come out of nowhere and lifted its head into the sun, as though announcing its presence. Right away, Erik saw that it was larger than any hare had ever seen. And it had a strange coat — not nut brown like the rest, but a rusty yellow that glistened like bronze in the heavy sun.
The thought of shooting it never crossed Erik's mind. His only thought was to catch it. For Farfar. A gift for the old man.
But just as he spotted it, the hare disappeared inside the tree line. Knowing full well that he shouldn't risk going into the forest so late in the day, Erik followed after it, forgetting all of Farfar's warnings. Moving quickly, he entered the black pines.
But before he knew it, he was lost. It was as though he had sleepwalked into the forest. Unsure of how much time had even passed, Erik came to his senses, startled to find himself in a patch of trees that he did not recognize. And the strange, golden hare was nowhere to be found.
He might have panicked then, only he happened to find himself at the edge of a clearing, and in the center he saw the stones.
"A shrine!" he thought. They were all over this area. Stone monuments left by the Old People. Maybe this was one of their's.
Only — no. These weren't the sleek pillars that the Old People had built long ago. These were hulking boulders, large and misshapen, huddled together in the center of the glade. As Erik approached, he found the boulders carved with hideous faces. And the large mushrooms that clung to them on all sides gave off a rank odor.
Only then did Farfar's warnings came back to him.
2. LORE
"They are evil things," the old man said, "and they give off a foul stench."
A fire blazed in the hearth. Snow had begun to drop from the sky outside. Erik was only ten years old, listening to Farfar explain things.
"Even the young ones are big and dangerous. But don't be fooled by their size! The Yotun can move as silent as shadows if they want to. And they're faster than the wind itself."
Farfar paused, staring into the fire. His eyes glistened under the brim of his old hat, which he always wore, even indoors. Next to him, and next to the crackling fireplace, Erik felt very far from the snow and darkness gathering outside. He felt warm and safe.
"By day, the Yotun become solid stone." Farfar's voice lowered to a gravelly whisper. "So they wait for sundown, when they are free to move around."
Erik was listening closely, his eyes wide. "Why do they turn to stone, Farfar?" he asked.
"A curse," the old man whispered. "An ancient curse placed upon all the Yotun by the great Elves that used to live here before us." He took a sip from his mug of hot tea and sighed thoughtfully. "But the Elves are gone now. Only the Yotun remain, cursed forever to turn to stone in the sun."
"Why have I never seen them then?" Erik asked.
"While stone, they sleep. Up there." The old man pointed out the window, but the snow was falling heavily now, obscuring the view of the mountain. "Up there in their caves, on the mountain peak."
Erik's brow furrowed in confusion. "But then..."
He remained silent for a moment, thinking. The old man read his thoughts.
"But then, you're wondering why people don't go up there during the day, and kill the Yotun while they sleep. Is that right?" Erik nodded and the old man sighed, "Ah, it's not so easy, boy."
"Why not?"
"Well. For one, the Yotun hide deep in the caves, where it's dark — too dark for you and me to see anything. You might be able to find them by their stench, true enough. But even if you did, it takes a special weapon to kill a Yotun."
Suddenly, the old man turned towards the window, stiffening, as though something had caught his eye. Erik looked too, but he could see nothing, only the white snowflakes falling in the darkness. There was a long silence.
After a long moment, Erik asked, "What sort of weapon, Farfar?"
The old man blinked. He looked at Erik as though he weren't there. Then his old eyes settled once more on the fire and he leaned back comfortably in his chair.
"A wise weapon."
This was too much for Erik, who had never heard of such a thing.
"But what is that, Farfar?"
"A weapon that has been used to defend against one of the Yotun. That weapon, and no other, could be used to kill one."
"Why?" asked Erik puzzled.
The old man reached for a poker and stoked the fire. Embers flew from hearth into the air around them. Renewed, the flames cast a heavy glow that moved across the old man's face.
"The Yotun are a curse. And any instrument used to protect against a curse — well, that makes it like magic, doesn't it! So the weapon becomes charmed. It becomes wise."
"Like magic," Erik repeated.
"Like magic."
The old man reached over then to throw another log on the fire. When he leaned back in his chair, his eyes were closed, and Erik knew he would soon be asleep.
His eyes settled once more on the window. The white flakes outside swirled in wild patterns, shaping the darkness, making the black night move like a series of silhouettes that twitched and flickered on the glass. Soon, his eyes began to close as well, and in that moment, he thought how very glad he was to be inside by the fire — and by Farfar – and nowhere near the darkness, or the mountain beyond.
3. DARKNESS FALLS
But that was years back, when he was a child. Now, he was nearly a man, standing in a sunlit clearing somewhere in the pine forest, staring at boulders carved with twisted faces. And he knew then and there that these were not real boulders at all. They were Yotun, the cavern dwellers, the night stalkers.
It suddenly struck him that he was entirely alone. And the light was growing thin. Dusk was coming. Slowly, Erik backed out of the clearing until he reached the trees. Then he turned and fled.
He dashed wildly through the trees, tripping over roots and brush, as he went. He felt like a prey animal. His eyes searched desperately for the edge of the forest. Once or twice, he became aware of something running alongside him, which looked from the corner of his eye like a large hare. But when he turned, there was nothing there.
Somehow, Erik found himself stumbling out of the pines and into the open. He paused, breathless and terrified. The last rays of sunset were just touching the sky. Darkness gathered quickly around him. Then a crash echoed from somewhere deep in the forest, and his fear quickened him. It sent him running once more and he went bounding over the long fields as the dusk deepened.
At a distance, he could see the farm. A beam of light near the front porch was scanning the surrounding darkness. It was a flashlight! Farfar was looking for him.
As he moved through the night, Erik heard something padding alongside him. This time he saw the hare. Its strange coat glistened unnaturally, looking more silver than gold in the darkness.
Soon, he was nearing the farm, where a voice behind the beam of light called out, "Erik! Boy! Are you there?"
"Farfar!"
The flashlight's beam turned sharply in his direction. There was no sound other than Erik's own feet hitting the grass. The hare had suddenly disappeared. Yet he knew he was not alone in those fields. Somehow, he could detect the soundless pursuit of something enormous behind him, gaining on him.
"Cover your ears, boy!" he heard the old man cry.
A moment later, a shot rang out and Erik went temporarily deaf. He was rushing past Farfar, who had dropped the flashlight and was aiming a shotgun into the fields behind him, preparing to fire another round. But Erik accidentally kicked the flashlight into the grass somewhere, leaving Farfar in near-total darkness.
As reached the front door, Erik turned back. What he saw made his stomach sink like a stone.
It all happened quickly. Farfar fired a shot. The blast of light lit up the thick darkness. In the flash, a massive figure reached out its arm. Farfar let out a choked scream. Then the darkness swallowed the old man up, and the night fell silent.
For a long while, Erik stood in the doorway, too scared to move, trembling. His eyes waited for Farfar to walk back out of the darkness towards the house. But he never did. And after several minutes, the boy began to weep.
At dawn, he finally gained the courage to leave the house and confirm what he already knew. The only sign of Farfar that he found was a trail of his bootprints in the dirt, leading nowhere, and his old wrinkled hat lying in the fields.
4. A-HUNTING WE WILL GO
That had been several days ago. Erik had found no time to mourn. He had been thinking, and preparing, steeling himself for what he knew he must do.
It was his fault the Yotun had come. It was his fault that Farfar was gone. It was up to him to set things right. To avenge the old man.
Erik's hands gripped the gun — his weapon. The one Farfar had used in defense of a Yotun. It had power now. It was wise.
The sun overhead bore heavily on Erik. He pulled the brim of Farfar's wrinkled hat over his eyes. Then he marched into the dark pine forest.
It was time for a hunt.

So a bogle is this according to Wikipedia
A bogle, boggle, or bogill is a Northumbrian[1] and Scots term for a ghost or folkloric being,[2] used for a variety of related folkloric creatures including Shellycoats,[3] Barghests,[3] Brags,[3] the Hedley Kow[1][4] and even giants such as those associated with Cobb's Causeway[4] (also known as "ettins", "yetuns" or "yotuns" in Northumberland and "Etenes", "Yttins" or "Ytenes" in the South and South West).[4][5] They are reputed to live for the simple purpose of perplexing mankind, rather than seriously harming or serving them.
Curious indeed.

A Team That Needs to Hit the Reset Button
Tumblr media
Whenever I take a look at the tables in World Cup qualifying, it is always normal for me to view the rosters of many national teams.
Lately I am paying a lot of attention to the qualifying campaign in South America, and I immediately noticed that Peru is bottom of the table with two points.
Through six matches played, the Peruvians have drawn two matches and lost four.
Tumblr media
Online bookmaker Bet365 has the latest wagers and currently Peru has 9/2 odds to finish in the top six of CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying.
Those draws came at home against Venezuela while the other was a scoreless draw away from home against Paraguay.
Before going any further, we need to remember that Peru broke its long World Cup drought when it qualified to Russia after defeating New Zealand 2-0 in the inter-confederation playoffs.
Four years later, Peru tried to qualify the hard way again but was unable to beat Australia on penalties and thus missed out on Qatar.
But now Peru is looking bad because the team is riddled and hampered by old age.
Tumblr media
Aldo Corzo, thirty-four years old, started at left back in Peru’s previous qualifier and although Yoshimar Yotun scored the only goal of the match, he is thirty-three years old.
When looking at the roster, it is easy to spot a lot of the players who are in their mid-thirties.
And even though Peru’s starting lineup had a nice blend of experience and some youngsters, it is also important to note that Paolo Guerrero made an appearance off the bench late in the second half.
But of course, we cannot ignore that Paolo Guerrero is forty years old. Yes, forty years old.
When I think of teams that continue to call up older players that are way past their prime, I think of national teams such as Estonia or India.
Tumblr media
In the case of Peru, this should not be happening.
I know that Paolo Guerrero is Peru’s all-time leading goal scorer, but there has got to be other talented younger strikers who can bring plenty of speed and excitement to the pitch.
It is obvious that reshuffling the lineup isn’t going to guarantee Peru qualifying to the 2026 World Cup.
But now is the time to hit the reset button and begin preparing for the future.

Paraguay: Silva; Rojas, Gomez, Balbuena, Arzamendia; Sanchez, Ortiz, Cubas; Almiron, A Romero, Enciso

Harry Bryant was the captain of the Los Angeles Police Department Blade Runner Unit who assigned ex-Blade Runner Rick Deckard to return to his job and retire six escaped Nexus-6 replicants.
The LAPD had a standard system of operations as it aimed to protect the city, and sometimes the world, from both domestic and galactic threats. Officers patrolled and surveilled the entire city constantly every day to ensure city rules and regulations were followed and the citizens were secure. Officers use personalized spinners to hover around the city grounds in search of potential threats or strange activities.
The LAPD notably housed and hired Blade Runners to retire defected or returning replicants from Off-world colonies. Blade Runners that worked for the LAPD operated differently than LAPD detectives or officers, working on an as-needed basis. When the LAPD received word of a defected replicant, their hired Blade Runners were called in to track down the replicants and retire them as ordered.
The LAPD operated out of at least two buildings over the course of the 21st century. Around 2019, the LAPD headquarters building was a skyscraper with a circular edifice. The roof had a heptagonal layout with multiple retractible landing pads for spinners. In 2029, this structure was attacked by a group of replicant revolutionaries led by Yotun. This attack left the building engulfed in flames.
By 2032, the LAPD had moved to a different building with a rectangular design that culminated in a monolithic, inverted pyramid of featureless concrete. One face of the building was painted with "LAPD" in enormous, multi-story high letters. As with the LAPD's old headquarters, this newer building also had retractible spinner landing pads on the roof. This building remained in use as of 2049.
