if you are a little bit like me, you spend your hours doubting your worth, making pointers in your head, of the things, your habits, your words and your actions, that make you unlovable. you doubt yourself so much that you think atleast ten times before talking to a friend or a stranger and still end up saying the "wrong" thing. and you regret every word that comes out of your mouth. "no, this is dumb, what did i do, I shouldn't be allowed to talk to anyone, I'm so dumb." you replay every word of the conversation you have. and cry. and disappear.

if you relate to this, i am so sorry. i know it's difficult to say nice things to ourselves. having faith and believing in "you deserve people who are good to you. you deserve happiness." is hard work for us.

here are some reminders for you. i want you to read these words and I want you to trust me when I say:

you are enough. your existence is not a mistake. no, you didn't say the wrong thing. it's okay. your friends don't hate you. they don't look down upon you. the hateful and mean words that you have to hear from the people around you, are never true. please try not to let their words get the best of you. you are not unworthy of love because people make you feel unwelcomed. you are allowed to make mistakes. your mistakes don't define you. you're not your thoughts. no one hates you. you don't have to give an explanation to anyone. there's nothing you need to prove. you are adorable. just as you are. you deserve care and attention. love and affection don't need to be earned. what you think matters. you matter. the unkind words thrown your way aren't true. you are not a burden. don't be scared of loosing people. it's okay to be imperfect and making mistakes is natural. it happens with everyone. it's not your fault. it's okay to mess up or be wrong sometimes. what's important is what you learn. rest. they won't abandon you. you don't deserve the harshness you're met with on a daily basis. you are not weak. being in touch with your feelings and emotions doesn't make you "too sensitive" and weak. it's okay. you can cry. let it out. you didn't give birth to the hate growing within other people. you haven't disappointed anyone. your choices, your interests and the quirks that make you "you" are amazing. really. I love you. you're beautiful. you'll find love. your existence isn't embarrassing or annoying. your presence is appreciated here. i want to hear your jokes. especially the lame ones. you don't ruin everyone's mood. you shouldn't doubt your own value if people make you feel left out. I'm sorry. you can say no if you don't want to do something. the world won't fall apart. they won't dislike you. don't be bothered about the people who dislike you. and I'm sorry that some people find it really difficult to accept a no. I'm super proud of you for trying. always. i want to hear your stories. I want to hear the details of your day. i want to hear you. i want to see the light in your eyes when you talk about the things that you love. you still have time to develop new skills. pick up your old hobbies. try new things. you are talented. you are not boring. you are loved. you are loved. you are loved. you are not alone. you belong here. This week on You Are What You Love, Sequoia Simone joined me to talk about how A Very Potter Musical started the domino effect of what her life turned out to be today. We talked a ton about how growing up watching YouTube content shaped us -- and how it helped us become creators in own right. 

If you’ve listened to the episode, you know that we also talked about the unique way online creators have of being personal to their viewers, and that some of our experiences meeting those creators were, in fact, perfect. I talked a little bit about meeting Philip DeFranco, and how kind he was to me. I dug up the photos I referenced, and looking at them again just reminded me where I was at the time. 

The live event I mentioned was in 2013, which was pretty far in to my gap year between high school and college. Almost all my friends were living all over the country, and I’d lost the idea of consistency and honestly, community. Phil’s show was a constant for me at that time -- I’d been watching his videos all throughout high school and middle school, and when I was suddenly mostly by myself, I had a daily friendly, energetic face on my screen. 

And having that kind moment from Phil in person has stuck with me. It helped me when I needed it, and it sparked an urge to give that same kind of help with my own content.  To be a creator means that you are, ultimately, giving people a break from reality, and hopefully a kind face. You don’t know what’s going on with the person on the other side of the screen, but if you make something good enough, you might give someone a break, and a minute to breathe.

I've been meaning to ask for a while, how did you come up with your tagging system? You seem to have a lot of fitting quotes for a lot of categories and I'm just curious how you came up with that

i've always tagged extensively (and maybe a little obsessively), but using quotes as categories was not really an original idea. i saw other people doing it first, and it seemed like a fun and very pretty way to tag for themes.

it had also pained me for years that a lot of beautiful, poignant ideas would get lost in my "words" or "favorite words" tag (there are literally hundreds of pages of "words" on my old blog, and already over a hundred on this one). i wanted to be able to find the things that really struck me and stuck with me, and i wanted to be able to group ideas together so i could return to them, read through them, and chew on them sometimes. so i started tagging for "love and death" and "love like religion" and "monstrous women," but even those weren't precise enough. so i started using quotes that got at specific things. lines of poetry, pieces of prose, song lyrics that struck any chord that just kept singing inside me (a couple of them are actually my own writing).

also, i have this tendency of reading things and going, "oh, this is reminds me of this other thing!!" so i enjoy drawing those connections and quietly sharing them for anyone who enjoys reading them.

an added bonus is i can use a quote to refer to Something Important To Me that i don't want to mention publicly. also!! i can use them for my friends, and every time i tag something that reminds me of someone, i get to tell them i love them!! (see: "a heart that beats. a voice that speaks the truth" and "i know i have found a friend forevermore" and "love you to the moon and to saturn")

i've lost track of all the ones i use at this point (i have several dozen listed on a doc, but not everything is on there), but i'll list a few of my favorites in the tags of this post! unfortunately, there won't be a whole lot here, since i remade my blog just a little over a year ago. there are a ton on the old account. maybe i'll do something similar for the old one, if anyone is interested in that. it'd be pretty convenient for me, anyway.
